Oakland A’s podcast with Charlie O: Lots of chatter about postseason for A’s; Race tightens in the AL West

On the A’s podcast with Charlie O:

1) A’s fans now are talking about winning the Western Division, not just making the Wild Card Game. Is that a realistic goal for this Oakland team?

2) Last week, you said that August 10th to the 22nd were the 12 most important days of the 2018 season for the A’s. Do you still feel that way? How are they doing so far?

3) The Seattle Mariners have been on the move and are nipping at the A’s heels just 2.5 games back in the standings. On Tuesday night, the M’s got Robinson Cano back after his long suspension. What kind of impact will Cano make on his team?

4) A’s players are making appeals to fans to come out and see them play. Why aren’t the fans filling the seats at the Coliseum?

5) There is a group called the Portland Diamond Project that is drawing up plans for potential downtown ballparks in Portland. Should Bay Area fans be worried about that group?

6) The A’s announced on Tuesday the establishment of the Athletics Hall of Fame. What are thoughts about the concept and the Class of 2018?

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary podcast: A’s now 2 1/2 behind first-place Astros; A’s open nine-game homestand tonight

Oakland A’s podcast with Joey Friedman: A’s on the road for brief three-game series in Anaheim; Oakland coming off 7-1 homestand

On the Oakland A’s podcast with Joey Friedman:

The Oakland A’s went 7-1 on their last homestand against the Toronto Blue Jays, Detroit Tigers, and the Los Angeles Dodgers. It was like the A’s were a knife going through butter as they made it look so easy. The A’s are playing with a lot of confidence and after acquisitions of pitchers Mike Fiers from Detroit, Sean Kelly from Washington, Jeurys Familia from the New York Mets, and picking up Fernando Rodney from Minnesota on Thursday night, the A’s have a real pitching nucleus.

Fiers, who pitched on Wednesday night for five innings plus, didn’t get the win, but was instrumental with 5.1 innings, four hits, one earned run, and eight strikeouts. A’s third baseman Jed Lowrie started working on his leg by doing sprints, treadmill, and lower body workouts.

Tonight, the A’s open a three-game series in Angels Stadium as they’ll start Brett Anderson (2-3, 4.64 ERA) going up against the Angels Felix Pena (1-3, 4.97 ERA).

Oakland A’s podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: Sources–A’s not happy with flagship station The Game; Fiers and his pitching debut for A’s; plus more

On the Oakland A’s podcast with Jerry:

The Oakland A’s front office according to sources say they’re not too happy with their flagship station, The Game 95.7, because the station is dedicating too much time to the San Francisco Giants and less airtime for the A’s. The A’s are the hottest team in baseball. According to the source, are asking what do they have to do to get more airtime on their own flagship station? Do they have to play like the 1927 New York Yankees?

The A’s starter Mike Fiers, making his A’s pitching debut on Wednesday night pitched himself a game with some good off speed pitches, painted the corners, worked a pitch that dropped to the bottom of the strike zone, and kept the Los Angeles Dodgers off balance all night, which is no easy task for five-plus innings.

The A’s, who had a six game win streak going into Tuesday night’s game, but lost 4-2; but still monumental with the winningest record in baseball. The Dodgers are no pushovers as they’re hanging in there with Arizona a half-game back and the footsteps of the Colorado Rockies just two games behind. There’s some competition to be had in the NL West.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Bartolo Colón–Número Uno in Latin America

By: Amaury Pi-Gonzalez

History was made at Arlington, Texas on Tuesday, August 7th as Bartolo Colón from the Dominican Republic and with his Texas Rangers team won his 246th game and became the #1 pitcher in total wins born in Latin America. His Texas Rangers routed the Seattle Mariners 11-4, Colón pitched seven innings. His last out was his 94th pitch of the game as he retired Dee Gordon. The “Big Sexy” gave up four runs and eight hits in seven innings of work.

“It was a long journey, but it finally came and it feels good” Colón said. “I always give thanks to God and to my family and the support that I have from them.”

Colón began his career in 1997 with the Cleveland Indians, and has pitched for a total of 21 years with 10 different teams. He won over 20 games in two occasions. In 2005 with the Angels, he ended with a 21-8 record and a 3.48 ERA, earning the American League Cy Young Award. A master of control, when he began he was a power pitcher with a fastball from 95-100 MPH. He pitched with the Oakland A’s in 2012 and 2013. I remember in A’s Spring Training, he tutored a Cuban-born newcomer, Yoenis Céspedes, to the Major Leagues. They became good friends.

With his 246th win, Colón passed his compatriot Juan “The Dominican Dandy” Marichal and then Nicaragua’s Dennis “El Presidente” Martínez among the top pitchers with most wins born in Latin America. Colón in Spanish means Columbus (like Christopher Columbus) and like the man who discovered the DR in the 1400’s, this Colón is in a class all by himself.

In case you did not know; there are 28 pitchers in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York with less wins than Colón’s 246.

2. The A’s made a flurry of roster moves Tuesday. What do we need to know about those transactions?

3. Oakland has won six straight games and moved into second place in the AL West and Wild Card. Can they sustain their position?

4. It’s an all LA rest of the week. Two with the Dodgers and three in Anaheim. How important are these games?

5). You say August 10-22 may be the most important 12 days of the season for the A’s. Why?

MLB The Show podcast with Matt Harrington: How bad is Posey’s concussion?; Have the Mariners derailed?; Astros edge Dodgers Friday in World Series reunion

On the MLB The Show podcast with Matt:

#1 Talk about taking one for the team on Friday night! San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey took one for the team as the Arizona Diamondbacks Paul Goldschmidt hit a foul tip right into Posey’s mask. It rung Posey’s head so much that he had to be helped to the dugout by the trainer. Posey might be in his closing days as a catcher.

#2 The Seattle Mariners have completely derailed! They lost their fourth straight game and dropped the first two games of this four game series with the Toronto Blue Jays 7-2. The M’s are now 1 1/2 games back of the A’s for the AL Wild Card race.

#3 The Houston Astros and the Los Angeles Dodgers had a 2017 World Series reunion with the Astros taking the first game of the series 2-1 on Friday night. The Astros’ starter Justin Verlander struck out 14 hitters to keep the Dodgers under control.

#4 The Chicago Cubs continued their winning ways with a one-run win over the San Diego Padres 5-4. The Cubs are holding onto first place in the NL Central with a one-game lead over the Milwaukee Brewers. The Cubs’ Javier Baez hit his 23rd home run of the season, tying Baez’ all time best for homers.

#5 The Oakland A’s Ramon Laureano got a walkoff base hit that won it for the A’s in 13 innings as the A’s shutout the Detroit Tigers 1-0. The A’s continued to pour it on being the hottest team in baseball. The A’s are only five games back in the AL West of the Atlanta Braves.

Oakland A’s podcast with Joey Friedman: A’s now tied with M’s in the Wild Card; look to put some pressure on the first-place Astros

On the Oakland A’s podcast with Joey:

The Oakland A’s open a three-game set at the Oakland Coliseum starting Friday night with the Detroit Tigers. These are not your 2012 Tigers who went to the World Series that season. The aging Bengals have Miguel Cabrera out with a torn triceps and Victor Martinez is near the end of his career.

The Tigers’ best hitter is Nick Castellanos, who was on the American League All-Star team, and the most potent hitter on the club. The Tigers’ dealing of former pitchers Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander certainly impacted the Tigers’ rotation and it really hasn’t recovered since then. The Tigers are 47-62 and 13 games out of first place in the AL Central.

The A’s are the hottest team in the Majors, winning 30 of their last 37 games and coming off a sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays. The A’s improved to second place in the wild card race, catching the Seattle Mariners in the AL West. The A’s made up for an 11-game deficit, coming all the way back to catch the M’s.

Tonight, the Tigers will start Blake Hardy (4-3, 3.61 ERA), and for the A’s, Brett Anderson (2-3, 5.51 ERA).
