NHL podcast with Len Shapiro:

#1 It had to be special for the New Jersey Devils who faced off with Buffalo Sabres in Prague. New Jersey goaltender Jacob Markstrom stopped 30 shots in the 4-1 win Friday night at the 2024 NHL Global Series Czechia presented by Fastenal. The game drew 16, 913 so the NHL is a hot commodity in Prague as well.

#2 Clayton Keller was named the first captain in Utah Hockey history Oliver Eckman Larsson was the Arizona Coyotes beginning Sep 13, 2018 and later was traded to the Vancouver Canucks on July 23, 2021. Keller was the alternate captain on the Coyotes for the last two seasons, he also led by example leading the Yotes in goals with 33 goals, assists with 43, and 76 points.

#3 While Edmonton Oilers Kris Knoblauch is still trying to decide whose going to work the blue lines with just six days left until the regular season starts. But there is no doubt that the Oilers will be starting Stuart Skinner in goal for this season. Stuart started in 57 games last season. Knoblauch said of Stuart, “You look at how well he’s handled adversity throughout the year. After a bad game, he’s always responded.

#4 Len, Austin Matthews comes into this season as the 26th named captain in Toronto Maple Leafs history. Matthews succeeds last season’s captain John Tavares. Tavares had been team captain for the Leafs since October 2019. Tavares will continue to bring a veteran presence. One of the big reasons for Matthews becoming the captain was given by team president Brenden Shanahan, “Over these past eight seasons, we’ve witnessed first-hand Auston’s trajectory and evolution as a player and a person,”

#5 The San Jose Sharks and NHL’s number one draft pick Macklin Celebrini is still nursing a nagging lower body injury. Celebrini was able to skate for the first time on Friday since his injury during Tuesday’s pre season game against Utah. Sharks head coach Ryan Warosfsky said “He skated on his own today, so I think we’re trending in the right direction. But again, it’s still very early in the process, and we’ll see how he is tomorrow and evaluate.”

#1 The Dallas Stars Tyler Seguin who was out for the last 11 games will return from a lower body injury on tonight against the Arizona Coyotes. Seguin has 21 goals and 46 points. The Stars are 42-19-9 third in the Western Conference.

#2 The Toronto Maple Leafs Austin Matthews has 57 goals in 67 games, Matthews leads the NHL in goal and is on a pace to finish the regular season with 57 goals. Alexander Ovechkin said he hopes that Matthews can finish the season with 70 goals. Can he do it Len?

#3 Len, Maple Leafs goaltender Joseph Woll returns to the ice tonight at the Capital One Center in Washington after suffering a high ankle strain. Woll has been out since for two weeks. Woll last played against the Bruins on Mar 4 and 7 against the Boston Bruins resulting in 4-1 losses.

#4 Winnipeg Jets head coach Rick Bowness will be away for a minor medical procedure and will return behind the bench when his condition improves. Assistant coach Scott Arniel will be acting head coach in Bownness’ absence. Arniel did not disclose what the issue but did say it was serious was but did say that the doctors have a handle on it and Bowness could return towards the end of the Jets current road trip.

#5 The Chicago Blackhawks named Connor Bedard the NHL second star of the week the second time he’s won the the award. Bedard this past week scored seven points tied with the Tampa Bay Lightning’s Nikita Kucherov. Bedard is having himself quite a rookie year.

2024 NHL All Star Game: Team Matthews Defeats Team McDavid 7-4 in Final

Team Matthews prevailed 7-4 in the 2024 NHL All Star Game at Scotiabank in Toronto against Team McDavid on Saturday. Clayton Keller (ARI), Mitch Marner (TOR), Auston Matthews (TOR) (2 goals), Filip Forsberg (NSH), Alex DeBrincat (DET), and Matthew Barzal (NYI) scored for Team Matthews. Jake Oettinger (DAL) and Igor Shesterkin (NYR) shared the net in the win.

Boone Jenner (CBJ), David Pastrnak (BOS), Leon Draisaitl (EDM), and Tomas Hertl (SJS) scored for Team McDavid. Connor Hellebuyck (WPG) and Sergei Bobrovsky (FLA) shared the net in the loss. As they have done since 2016, teams played 3-on-3 for two ten-minute periods. Goaltenders each played one period. Winners of the semi-final games moved on to the final.

Jim Montgomery (BOS) coached Team Matthews, Peter Laviolette (NYR) coached Team McDavid, Rick Bowness (WPG) coached Team MacKinnon and Rick Tocchet (VAN) coached Team Hughes. The teams also had celebrity captains: Justin Bieber for Matthews, Will Arnett for McDavid, Tate McRae for MacKinnon and Michael Bublé for Hughes.

Team McDavid won the first semi-final 4-3 in a shoot-out against Team McKinnon. Boone Jenner (CBJ), David Pastrnak (BOS) and Connor McDavid (EDM) scored for Team McDavid. Connor Hellebuyck (WPG) and Sergei Bobrovsky (FLA) shared the net in the win. Nathan McKinnon (COL) scored twice and Oliver Bjorkstrand (SEA) scored for Team McKinnon. Jeremy Swayman (BOS) and Alexander Georgiev (COL) shared the net in the loss.

Team McDavid was down 3-1 with less than a minute left in the game. They pulled their second period goaltender, Bobrovsky, for a fourth skater. Pastrnak started the comeback with 31.5 seconds left and McDavid tied it 3-3 with 5.4 seconds left.

McDavid and Pastrnak went on to scored in the shoot-out against Jeremy Swayman. Swayman stopped a shot from Leon Draisaitl (EDM). Sergei Bobrovsky stopped shots from Sidney Crosby (PIT) and Nathan MacKinnon.

In the second semi-final, Team Matthews defeated Team Hughes 6-5, also in a shoot-out. Alex DeBrincat (DET) and Filip Forsberg each scored twice and Mitch Marner added a fifth for Team Matthews. Jake Oettinger (DAL) and Igor Shesterkin (NYR) shared the net in the win. Frank Vatrano (ANA) scored twice and Nikita Kutcherov (TBL), Elias Petterson (VAN), and Brady Tkachuk (OTT) scored for Team Hughes. Thatcher Demko (VAN) and Cam Talbot (LAK) shared the net in the loss.

Alex DeBrincat scored the only goal in the shootout, against Thatcher Demko (VAN). Igor Shesterkin (NYR) stopped shots from Kyle Connor (WPG), Nikita Kutcherov (TBL), Elias Petterson (VAN) and J. T. Miller (VAN). Thatcher Demko (VAN) stopped shots from Filip Forsberg, Auston Matthews and William Nylander (TOR).

#1 The Toronto Maple Leafs Austin Matthews scored a hat trick and had a quite a night and also scored his 300th career goal. Matthews got the tying goal and the Leafs later defeated the Montreal Canadiens in Toronto at Scotiabank Arena on Wednesday.

#2 Defenseman Brady Skjei scored a goal and got an assist for the Carolina Hurricanes to come back on the Ottawa Senators at PNC Arena in Carolina on Wednesday for a 5-3 win. The Hurricanes got a goal each from Jordan Staal, Michael Bunting, Teuvo Teravainen, and Jacob Slavin.

#3 The Chicago Blackhawks Connor Bedard scored his first NHL goal in a loss to the Boston Bruins, The Bruins David Pastrnak scored two goals. It was the Bruins 100th season and they won their opener 3-1 at TD Waterhouse Garden in Boston.

#4 The Vegas Golden Knights Brett Howden was suspended for putting a head check to the head of the Seattle Kraken’s Brandon Tenev at T Mobile Center in Las Vegas. Howden rather than go low or below the shoulder for the check hit Tenev helmet to helmet which turned Tenev’s head and the NHL ruled it an illegal check. As a consequence Howden has been suspended for tonight’s game in San Jose and the next game on Sat 14th in Anaheim.

#5 In what many oddsmakers predict the San Jose Sharks will have a worse season this season than last year. The Sharks struggled all last season and that was with the help of former defenseman Erik Karlsson who is now with the Pittsburgh Penguins. This year they have to depend on a handful of veterans, Marc- Edouard Vlasic, Nico Sturm, Logan Couture, Ryan Carpenter, and Thomas Hertl as they open tonight against the Vegas Golden Knights in San Jose.

#1 Connor Bedard is all the rage and the Chicago Blackhawks are excited on seeing what he can do. Bedard is excited about getting in camp and getting on with the NHL pre season and is compared to being the best NHL prospect since Austin Matthews.

#2 The Toronto Maple Leafs extended head coach Sheldon Keefe two more seasons. Keefe will be under contract from 2025-26. Talk about some the things the Leafs like about Keefe to bring him back for two more seasons.

#3 The Vegas Golden Knights Phil Kessel said he is willing to give up his 1,064 consecutive games streak to help the Knights. Kessel is not guaranteed a contract for the 2023-24 season and said he would take a healthy scratch if it would help a team.

#4 Former San Jose Shark Joonas Donskoi announced his retirement at age 31. Donskoi didn’t play a game with the Seattle Kraken last season. Donskoi said that concussions have forced him into retirement. Donskoi played seven NHL seasons for San Jose, Colorado Avalanche and the Kraken.

#5 Former Minnesota North Star Brad Maxwell 66, passed away from lung cancer. Maxwell played 613 games and played in the NHL 1977-1987 the North Stars. Maxwell was an excellent golfer.

#1 Len, the Washington Capitals Alexander Ovechkin set an all time NHL record surpassing Wayne Gretzky for the most 40 goal NHL seasons doing it for the 13th time. The Caps were playing against the Columbus Blue Jackets when Ovechkin’s shot defected off the stick of the CBJ’s Nick Blankenburg at 5:12 in the first period on Tuesday night.

#2 Brian Boyle former NHL player will join NHL Network as a studio analyst, Boyle joins fellow studio analysts Jamison Coyle and Mike Rupp on NHL tonight seen Thursday and Friday. Boyle will work the intermission reports this Saturday with Tony Luftman. Boyle said while he didn’t want stop playing the game he will look forward to talking about the game.

#3 Jared Bednar signed a three year deal with the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday the contract goes into effect next season through 2023-24. Bednar took over for former Avalanche coach Patrick Roy on Aug 25, 2016 and is 281-190-52 in 523 regular-season games.

#4 In an NHL Players Association Poll the Pittsburgh Penguins Syd Crosby was voted the most complete player for the forth year in a row picking up 30.1 percent of the vote. Other NHL players Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers, Andrei Vasilevekskiy of the Tampa Bay Lightning, and the Toronto Maple Leafs Austin Matthews were also winners in the poll.

#5 The San Jose Sharks general manager Mike Grier has announced that forward Jacob Peterson has been recalled from their AHL affiliate the San Jose Barracuda. Peterson came to the Sharks from the Dallas Stars on Mar 3. Peterson has a career 66 games, 12 goals and five assists.

#1 The Vegas Golden Knights Mark Stone is listed as week to week with an upper body injury. Stone left at 10:42 in the first period against the Florida Panthers on Thursday as the Knights won it 4-2. Stone didn’t practice on Friday and will sit out tonight against the Edmonton Oilers.

#2 Len, the anticipated return of Austin Matthews has finally arrived, Matthews whose been out of the Toronto Maple Leafs line up has missed the last two games. Matthews has been out of the line up since last Sunday and is a maybe for Saturday’s game against the Boston Bruins.

#3 Nick Leddy of the St Louis Blues is set to return on Saturday against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Leddy a defenseman has 11 assists in 39 games. Leddy has missed the last four games with an upper body injury. Leddy did not play since last Thursday.

#4 Nathan Bastian of the New Jersey Devils could return Saturday night against the Los Angeles Kings. Bastian a forward was injured against the Washington Capitals on Nov 26th. Bastian has eight points, three goals and five assists.

#5 The Edmonton Oilers Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Dallas Stars Jason Robertson, Tage Thompson Buffalo Sabers, and Alexander Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals are up for being MVP the season isn’t over yet but these are some top candidates.
