#1 Morris the Bears (10-13) tallied their lowest point total for 2019-20 with a 60-45 loss in Utah (14-9) and Bears head coach Mark Fox tried to explain how to fix the offense that looked like they recovered in games against Stanford (16-7), OSU (14-9) and Oregon (18-6).

#2 When you look at the miniscule number of only 45 points scored was it a matter of Utah’s ability to shut down all of Cal’s offensive efforts and playbook or Cal just went right back to the former offense they were before the Stanford game?

#3 The Utes Timmy Allen who led Utah with 21 points said after Saturday night’s game that he was stress free, that he could almost do whatever he wanted on offense does that speak to Cal’s lack of stopping Utah’s offense or Allen really was that good to do whatever he wanted with the basketball

#4 The Bears Matt Bradley had only 13 points on Saturday night he at times was well covered and couldn’t take the kind of shots he normally takes

#5 The Bears go back to the drawing board this time they go back to Berkeley and face the Arizona schools first this Thursday against Arizona (16-7) and then against Arizona State (15-8) on Saturday can they get back that old mojo they had before they went to Utah?

#19 Arizona takes down San Jose State in Tucson

The San Jose State men’s basketball was in the desert to take on the 19-ranked Arizona Wildcats at McKale Center Thursday evening. This was the Spartans and Wildcats first meeting since 1984.

SJSU was welcomed by Arizona, but the warm welcome ended sooner than later. The Spartans’ starting lineup featured Brae Ivey, Seneca Knight, Christian Anigwe, Eduardo Lane and Craig LeCesne. The Spartans won the possession and the tipoff and first half in Tuscon, Ariz. went underway. The Wildcats had an early 5-3 lead at the 15:08 mark during the first media timeout. The Spartans’ Richard Washington knocked down his first 3-pointer to tie the score 8-8 at the 14:09 mark.

Arizona led 17-10 at the second media timeout with 9:54 left. However, SJSU’s Ralph Agee made the most of his minutes early with 4 points and 3 boards.

Arizona built up their lead, 29-16, at the final media timeout of the first half with 3:01 left. The Wildcats kept going at it, taking a 39-17 lead to the locker room at the halftime break.

Things weren’t any better in the second half for the Spartans. The Wildcats led 40-22 at the first media timeout at the 15:52 mark. Then, SJSU scored the first 7 points of the half as they continued to chip away in 40-24 deficit.

The Spartans went on a 9-0 run, but it came to an end on a 3-ball, but LeCesne converted on the ensuing possession at the 13:18 mark. Yet, SJSU was optimistic as they tweeted that they were still in it, despite a 43-28 deficit.

The Wildcats responded with a run of their own. Soon enough, Arizona was in the driver’s seat with a commanding 61-29 lead with 8:12 left to play. The Wildcats won 87-39.

With the loss, SJSU fell to 1-2, while Arizona improved to 3-0.

The Spartans return home to host the Simpson Red Hawks on Sunday, November 17 at 4 pm PT.

SJSU STUNS HOFSTRA IN SEASON OPENER
– SJSU opened the 2019-20 season with a bang, defeating Hofstra on the road, 79-71.

– Hofstra won 27 games last year, SJSU lost 27 games.

– In his Spartan debut, JC transfer and former Wake Forest guard, Richard Washington, posted a team-high 23 points off the bench on 8-of-13 shooting. He scored 12 of his 23 points in the final four minutes, including a stretch of three straight three-pointers to put the game away.

– Senior forward Craig LeCesne had his first career double-double with a career-high 19 points plus 11 rebounds.

– It was SJSU’s first win in a road opener since 2010-11 when the Spartans topped Eastern Washington, 67-60.

– The Spartans snapped a 21-game road losing streak dating back to the 2017-18 campaign.

– SJSU won on the East Coast for the first time since 2001-02, when the Spartans defeated Fairleigh Dickinson at the BCA Tournament hosted by NC State in Raleigh, N.C.

LOTS OF STARTERS 
– The Spartans return seven players who started at least one game a season ago.

– Guard Seneca Knight is the most experienced, as the sophomore started 17 games, including the final 12, of his rookie season.

– Point guard Brea Ivey was just behind Knight, as the former junior college transfer started 16 games last season.

– Forward Craig LeCesne and guard Zach Chappell both started 15 games last year.

– Forward Christian Anigwe, guard Isaiah Nichols and walk-on guard Trey Smith each started one game.

SIX NEW FACES
Spartans head coach Jean Prioleau will have the help of six newcomers on the roster in 2019-20.

– The Spartans have three new junior college transfers in Richard Washington (Tallahassee CC), Eduardo Lane (Marshalltown CC) and Ralph Agee (East LA College). Washington started his collegiate career at Wake Forest, where he played eight games as a freshman before an injury caused him to miss the entire 2017-18 season.

– Another Wake Forest transfer will join the Spartans on the floor this season, as center Samuel Japhet-Mathias will be eligible after a redshirt season last year. The former four-star recruit appeared in 17 games off the bench at Wake Forest as a freshman in 2016-17. He posted six points and four rebounds at No. 17 Xavier.

– Prioleau added two freshmen this season in guard Omari Moore and walk-on center Harminder Dhaliwal.

SJSU TV SCHEDULE
– SJSU will play 10 games on TV this season, including three at home.

– SJSU hosts an ESPN networks game this year for the first time since 2010-11, when either ESPN2 or ESPNU will carry the SJSU tip against Utah State on Dec. 4. SJSU will also be on ESPN2 or ESPNU when visiting Utah State on Feb. 26.

– SJSU will have four non-conference games on TV, all against Pac-12 competition. The Spartans will be on CBS Sports Network when hosting Stanford at the Provident Credit Union Event Center on Dec. 14. SJSU will battle both UCLA and Arizona on Pac-12 Networks and meet Oregon State on FS1 for a neutral site matchup in Las Vegas.

– The Spartans will also have four Mountain West contests on AT&T SportsNet this season — Jan. 15 at UNLV, Jan. 21 at New Mexico, Feb. 8 at Nevada and Feb. 29 vs. UNLV.

#1 The Cardinal (4-4) have now won three of their last four games. Quarterback KJ Costello missed a few games returned in the Oct 26th game against Arizona (4-4) and led them to a 41-31 victory.

#2 Costello threw for 322 yards 31-44 and three touchdowns. Costello looks like he never missed a step.

#3 It was also a big day for running back Cameron Scarlett, who rushed for 102 yards and two touchdowns.

#4 On receiving, Simi Fehoko caught three passes scored two touchdowns for 97 yards. It looks as if Stanford’s offensive house is in order.

#5 The Cardinal are in Colorado (3-6) for this Saturday against the Buffaloes. From how everything looks, this could be a pretty close matchup between both teams.

#1 The Stanford Cardinal (4-4) got a very needed victory over the Arizona Wildcats (4-4) last Saturday 41-31 and they chalked up their third win in four games. Coach David Shaw has to like the direction the club is taking?

#2 The Cardinal have won three of their last four games. The win over the Wildcats is good for the emotion going into the Cardinal’s next game in Colorado.

#3 After missing three weeks, Stanford quarterback KJ Costello was back in the line up and threw 30 for 43 for 312 yards and three touchdowns. Looks like the O-line provided him some time to throw the football.

#4  Cardinal receiver Simi Fehoko had three receptions for 97 yards and two touchdowns. The running game was in full effect for the Cardinal as they accrued over 150 yards on the ground.

#5 The Colorado Buffaloes (3-5) have had some setbacks this year and they are looking for some offense, but it will be on both sides of the ball they’ll be concerned with. On the other hand, the Cardinal come in after that win against Arizona with some confidence as this game is Boulder.

Stanford defeats Arizona 41-31 Costello returns throws for three touchdowns

PALO ALTO–The Stanford Cardinal football program has had an up and down season in 2019. Entering play on Saturday afternoon they were a game under .500. After losing a tough home game to UCLA last week they looked to get back on track against the feisty Arizona Wildcats.

Stanford Quarterback KJ Costello was hoping to right the ship after missing the past three games due to injury. Despite jumping out to an early lead with a potent offense in the first quarter, Arizona couldn’t contain Costello on his return. The Wildcats took a 10 – 7 lead before the Cardinal exploded for 24 points in the second quarter.

Costello had 312 yards and three touchdowns and was in sync with his wideouts all game. Costello found 9 different receivers for positive gain. Simi Fehoko had three receptions for 97 yards and two touchdowns. The running game was in full effect for the Cardinal as the accrued over 150 yards on the ground.

The bell cow, Cameron Scarlett carried the ball 102 yards, averaging 5.4 yards a carry and also had two scored. Arizona was well in this game in the second half despite using two quarterbacks. Arizona put up one of their highest scores of the season but could not recover from two interceptions by quarterback Khalil Tate.

The second half of the game was a defensive battle. The Cardinal were able to hold Arizona to seven points in the half and hand Arizona its third consecutive loss. Stanford has bye next week in which they will gladly use to get healthy before they push for a bowl game in their final four matches.

Final: Stanford def. Arizona 41-31

The Cardinal have a bye on Nov 3rd and travel to Colorado to face the Buffaloes on Sat Nov 9th.

#1 Lots to work on for Stanford Cardinal head coach David Shaw and the Cardinal as they come off last Thursday’s loss to the UCLA Bruins at home 34-16.

#2 Lots to talk about for Shaw and the Cardinal and quarterback David West, who threw against the Bruins as the Cardinal third string quarterback, going 15-32 for 143 yards and no touchdowns. West and the offense will have a huge order in improving the offense in Arizona at Stanford Stadium this Saturday.

#3 A total of 16 Cardinal have made their first career starts which included West, with a great percentage of the players being that young and inexperienced the task of getting each of them ready. Saturday has proved challenging, but the Cardinal have won three games this season proving that once in gear Shaw can get his younger players ready.

#4 The Bruins — in the first quarter — got two touchdowns and spread out the rest of their scoring throughout the game for the 18-point win. Stopping the run early will probably be one of Stanford’s biggest goals this Saturday against Arizona.

#5 The Wildcats are coming to Stanford with a two-game losing streak and got crushed in their last two games by Washington and USC. Are the Wildcats a down team are a mad animal backed in a corner coming in this Saturday?

Stanford football closes out homestand against Arizona Saturday

Coming off a tough loss by the lowly UCLA Bruins, the Stanford Cardinal football team has room for improvement. The Cardinal (3-4, 2-3 Pac-12) will host the Arizona Wildcats (4-3, 2-2 Pac-12) Saturday afternoon at 12:30 pm PT. The game will be broadcasted on the Pac-12 Network.

Here’s what you need to know before Saturday’s game.

FIRST CAREER STARTS
A total of 16 Cardinal have made their first career starts so far: Branson Bragg, Henry Hattis, Stuart Head, Houston Heimuli, Jake Hornibrook, Kyu Blu Kelly, Jonathan McGill, Barrett Miller, Davis Mills, J.J. Parson, Andrew Pryts, Curtis Robinson, Walter Rouse, Foster Sarell, Osiris St. Brown and Jack West.

TRUE FRESHMEN
Including punter Ryan Sanborn, seven true freshmen have started a game for the Cardinal this season, tied with UMass for second-most in the country. The Cardinal has started four true freshmen on the offensive line, most in the country.

TOUCHDOWNS GALORE
Stanford is seventh in the nation with two defensive touchdowns so far this season and has scored three non-offensive touchdowns.

SPECIAL TEAMS
The Cardinal’s special teams units have blocked two kicks this season, tops in the conference and 13th-best in the nation. Obi Eboh blocked an Oregon State field goal in the win against the Beavers, while Spencer Jorgensen blocked a punt that was recovered for a touchdown by Brycen Tremayne against UCLA.

NEW STARTING QUARTERBACK
Jack West got the start at quarterback against UCLA in place of the injured K.J. Costello and Davis Mills, marking Stanford’s third quarterback to start a game this season. The last time Stanford started three quarterbacks in the same season was in 1974 when Guy Benjamin, Mike Cordova and Jerry Waldvogel all started a game.

FIRST CAREER APPEARANCES
15 true freshmen have made their first career appearances so far this season: Branson Bragg, Stephen Herron, Elijah Higgins, Jake Hornibrook, Austin Jones, Brock Jones, Spencer Jorgensen, Kyu Blu Kelly, Zahran Manley, Jonathan McGill, Barrett Miller, Nathaniel Peat, Walter Rouse, Ryan Sanborn and Tristan Sinclair.

ADEBO ADVANTAGE
Through seven games, Paulson Adebo has made 27 tackles with 12 passes defended (10 breakups, two interceptions). Adebo’s 12 passes defended are sixth-most nationally.

Wildcats hand Stanford second straight Pac-12 defeat

Stanford dropped its second game of the Southwest road trip in Tucson on Sunday, as Arizona thumped the Cardinal 70-54 in Pac-12 men’s basketball.

Ira Lee led the Wildcats with 16 points, followed by Chase Jeter with 14. It was Arizona’s 19th straight victory over Stanford. Justin Coleman added 14 points and five assists.

It was Arizona’s second win over the Bay Area teams this week after defeating California on Wednesday, ending a seven-game losing streak.

The Wildcats (16-12, 7-8) jumped to an 11-point lead early and snuffed out two Stanford runs, as the Cardinal have been winless at McKale Center since 2008. Stanford missed seven of its first eight shots in the opening five minutes.

U of A led 31-23 at halftime. The Wildcats hit 7 of 16 3-pointers in the second half, while connecting on 14 of 28 field goals.

Stanford (14-13, 7-8) was led offensively by Daejon Davis with 14 points. Oscar Da Silva added 12 points. Prior to the current road trip, the Cardinal had been on a roll, winning five of their last six games before losing to Arizona State on Wednesday.

For the second straight game, KZ Okpala was out of the Cardinal lineup due to what Coach Jarod Haase called “an upper body injury.”

The Cardinal return home on Thursday to host Washington State.

#1 The Stanford Cardinal (14-12) absolutely got demolished on Wednesday at ASU (18-8). What were some of the fundamental issues on defense to contain the Sun Devils?

#2 The Sun Devils head coach Bobby Hurely after the game was wearing a gangster shirt while addressing reporters and said that it was his gangster shirt and his players played like gangsters and delivered.

#3 On defense, the Cardinal tried everything and KZ Okpala said that he was overwhelmed by the turnovers and shooting that ASU capitalized on.

#4 Head coach of the Cardinal Jerod Haase said considering how hard the defense played it was disappointing with all that passion that Stanford had to take loss like this.

#5 It’s onto Tucson on Sunday and the Wildcats. Can the Cardinal contain the Arizona defense in that game?
