On the Cal Bears basketball podcast with Michael:

#1 Michael final moments of the game on Thursday night the Arizona Sun Devils (5-8) pulled far enough away in the second half to grab a win 72-68 win away from the Cal Bears (7-11).

#2 After getting crushed Monday night by the Arizona Wildcats 80-67 the Sun Devils were out for some revenge and they had both offense and defense working against Cal in the second half after getting eclipsed by one point by Cal in the first half.

#3 One positive thing that came out of the game was that guard Matt Bradley has found his shot and led Cal with 26 points.

#4 The only other player for Cal who was in double figures was Andre Kelly who finished up with 16 points, how tough has it got to be for Cal head coach Mark Fox to get the rest of the offense to find the basket in a game like this?

#5 Cal’s task doesn’t get any easier they face the Arizona Wildcats (12-4) who just came off a Thursday night loss in Tucson to the Stanford Cardinal (10-5) 73-64 there is very little doubt that the Wildcats will be also taking their frustrations out on the Bears on Saturday afternoon.

Stanford uses late rally to defeat Arizona 73-64

Stanford rallied late to defeat Arizona 73-64 on Thursday in Pac-12 men’s basketball in Tucson, Ariz. The win marked Stanford’s first victory at McKale Center – and the first sweep of the Wildcats – since 2008.

Jaiden Delaire led the Cardinal (10-5 overall, 6-3 Pac-12) with 21 points, hitting 7 of 12 field goals and a 3-pointer. While tying his career high in scoring, Delaire scored 14 points in the second half.

Oscar da Silva was next with 17 points, Michael O’Connell scored 14 points and had four assists, and Spencer Jones added 10 points – including two 3s – and a team-high six rebounds.

Stanford outshot the Wildcats 49 percent to 41 percent, as Arizona saw a three-game win streak snapped while losing at home for the third time this season. The Cardinal outscored Arizona 34-14 in the paint.

Delaire, Jones and da Silva combined for 19 points in a 20-8 Cardinal run late in the game to pull away from Arizona.

Stanford made 7 of 9 of its field goals down the stretch, while the Wildcats were held to 2 of 12.

James Akinjo was the Wildcats’ top scorer with 17 points along with six assists, followed by Terrell Brown Jr. with 13, and Dalen Terry and Bennedict Mathurin with 10 pointd each. Arizona (12-4, 6-4) outrebounded the Cardinal 32-30.

Stanford’s southwest road trip continues Saturday, when the Cardinal visit Arizona State.

Cardinal reschedule games with USC

Stanford men’s basketball’s previously postponed contests with Southern California have been rescheduled for Feb.2 at Maples Pavilion and Feb. 22 in Los Angeles at Galen Center.

According to Stanford Athletics, “the change follows Santa Clara County’s updated Directive for Collegiate and Professional Sports, which allows for the resumption of training and competition involving contact, close proximity and equipment sharing – both indoors and outdoors – on Stanford’s campus.”

The game against USC on Feb. 2 will be Stanford’s first game on its home court this season. It’s been 338 days since its last game at Maples Pavilion on March 1, 2020.

#1 Jerry, the Cardinal (9-5) open tonight with two games in Arizona, tonight against the Wildcats, who are one of the best at 12-3, and on Saturday against the ASU Sun Devils, who are 4-8. Let’s take tonight’s game first. How much pressure will it be on star scorer for Stanford Oscar da Silva tonight?

#2 Stanford has won four of their last six game, including their last game against UCLA, which was by a razor margin 73-72, but an impressive win.

#3 In the game against UCLA, da Silva was once again top scorer with 26 points. He was followed by Jaiden Delaire, who scored 19. That’s saying a lot when you’re dueling with a team defense like the Bruins.

#4 The Wildcats are no match for a lot of teams in their last game. They pounded the Arizona State Sun Devils 80-67. The Wildcats are loaded on offense. Their top scorer on Monday night’s game was Terrell Brown 18 points and Azuolas Tubelis and James Akinjo both finished with 16. The Cardinal could have their hands full tonight in Tucson.

#5 Stanford head coach Jerod Haase could coach another game similar to the one he coached against UCLA. Lots of skill shots, aggressive inside and da Silva taking lots of outside shots.

#1 Jerry Stanford men have to be relieved that they got a game in after the completed the Maui Classic Dec 6th. The Cardinal picked up a big win 82-71 against CSUN on Tuesday night .

#2 The win improves Stanford’s record 3-2 and head coach Jerod Haase likes the offense he was getting on Tuesday and the Cardinal pretty much were in control against CSUN.

#3 The Cardinal’s lead scorer the reliable Oscar da Silva had 32 points and against CSUN he was shooting from all different places on the floor and didn’t miss very much.

#4 Jerry if you recall this was Stanford’s first 30 point scorer since KZ Okpala did it against Cal on Feb 3, 2019.

#1 The Bears who are at the bottom of NCAA basketball team in offense didn’t look like a team that’s struggling as they got a road win in Pullman defeating Washington State 66-57.

#2 Paris Austin, Andre Kelly and Matt Bradley combined for 46 points for Cal that contribution helped accelerate the offense and Austin, Kelly and Bradley had some great opportunities to take some great shots.

#3 The win marks the first time they’ve won on the road this season what do the Bears need to do to win games on the road?

#4 Cal head coach Mark Fox said, “For this team, no one gave them a chance to have much success so any time that they have some I want them to enjoy it and understand how they found that success so they can build on it,”

Arizona continues Pac-12 mastery over Cardinal 69-60

Arizona, behind a 21-point, 11-rebound game from freshman center Zeke Nnaji, held off a second-half surge by Stanford and defeated the Cardinal 69-60 Saturday in Pac-12 men’s basketball at Maples Pavilion.

This was another tough loss for the Cardinal, who have been in a tailspin over the last few weeks, losing seven of their last eight games. It’s also the Wildcats’ 20th consecutive win over Stanford, a streak that goes back to 2008-09.

Josh Green contributed 15 points and six rebounds, and Dylan Smith added 11 points (2 of 7 3-pointers) and six boards for the visiting Wildcats (18-7 overall,8-4 Pac-12), who outrebounded Stanford 39-25 and picked up 10 points off 13 offensive boards.

Arizona, which moved into a three-way tie for first place in the conference, got only five points and two assists from point guard Nico Mannion, who played 24 minutes because of foul trouble. The Wildcats shot 37 percent overall, including 3 of 21 behind the arc. Arizona did hit 26 of 31 at the free throw line.

Bryce Willis led the Cardinal with a game-high 25 points, and Oscar da Silva added 15 points. Both Willis and da Silva grabbed five rebounds for Stanford (16-9 overall,5-7). It was da Silva’s first game back after suffering a head injury against Colorado on Feb. 8.

Arizona led 30-23 at halftime before the Cardinal cut their deficit to 46-42 with 10:28 left in the second half on a Wills layup. The Wildcats built a 59-50 lead with 5:30 to play on a Smith 3-pointer.

The Cardinal travel to Washington on Thursday.

Wildcat Wakeup Call: Lethargic Arizona surges after halftime, beats Cal 68-52

BERKELEY, CA–Cal’s season-long shooting issues didn’t get corrected on Thursday night. Arizona’s shooting struggles created last week at home against the Los Angeles schools did, with a jolt of confidence that surfaced in a timely manner after halftime.

Some issues are chronic, some are fleeting. In a 16-point road victory over Cal, Arizona and sharpshooter Dylan Smith found theirs are fleeting. Smith helped UA break open a one-point game with four, consecutive made 3-pointers–after 18 misses dating back to late January–as the Wildcats surged to a comfortable 68-52 win over host Cal.

Arizona coach Sean Miller considered benching Smith and his balky jump shot against Cal. Ultimately, he penciled the fifth-year senior into the lineup because Miller knew Smith would help Arizona win. Miller’s intuition was spot on.

“It’s just I don’t want Dylan Smith to be the scapegoat because we lost a home game or because he’s shooting poorly,” Miller said. “You don’t start him tonight and all of a sudden that’s the answer.”

The Bears lost their third straight, after a competitive start that saw them trail by seven at the half, and 33-32 with 13:59 remaining, only to see their offense lose steam down the stretch. Cal shot 38 percent for the game, but their starters shot just 32 percent with the majority of the misses in the game’s final 10 minutes.

“We have to keep the score down,” coach Mark Fox explained. “At 32-33, they went on a 7-0 run, and we never threatened after that. When they got into the bonus with 12 minutes to go, it makes it hard for us to run the style of play that gives us the best chance to win.”

The Pac-12’s lowest scoring team, and also the team with the slowest pace, scored exactly 52 points for the fifth time this season. On four of those occasions–including Thursday–the Bears (10-14, 4-7) suffered a double-digit loss.

“We want it to be a low-scoring game,” Matt Bradley said. “For us to win games, we need to play defense. Tonight, our defense wasn’t there, and that’s why we lost.”

Bradley led Cal with 19 points, eight rebounds, but he missed 11 of his 18 shots. Bradley was the only Cal player in double digits, Grant Anticevich and Andre Kelly each added eight points.

The Bears get an opportunity to better energize their Haas Pavilion crowd on Sunday afternoon when Arizona State visits at 3pm.
