No. 2 Cardinal women prevail over No, 15 Arizona 73-57

Stanford used a big second quarter surge to pull away from No, 15 Arizona Monday, as the No, 2 Cardinal earned a 73-57 Pac-12 women’s basketball victory at Maples Pavilion.

It was the Cardinal’s 10th consecutive win, as they held the high-scoring Wildcats to their lowest offensive output o the season. Arizona (12-2 overall, 2-1 Pac-12) had been averaging 81.2 points per game and had been winning by an average of 22.3 points.

Haley Jones led the Cardinal (15-1 overall, 3-0 Pac-12) with 18 points, a season-high 16 rebounds and five assists. Francesca Belibi had 14 points and 10 rebounds off the Stanford bench – both season highs, Hannah Jump bagged four 3-pointers on her way to finishing with 13 points.

Cameron Brink finished with 12 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots despite a cold shooting day. Brink was 3-for-15 from the field and missed all of her 3-point attempts.

The Cardinal were 20-for-34 at the free throw line, but had a 53-35 rebounding edge.

Jade Loville led U of A with 12 points. Helena Pueyo and Madison Connor each added 10 polints for the Wildcats, Pueyo also had seven rebounds,

Stanford used a 7-0 run to take a 17-11 lead in the first quarter, then outscored the Wildcats 17-7 in the second quarter to take a 36-22 halftime lead.

The Cardinal visit California this Sunday in Berkeley in their second matchup of the season. Stanford won the first game 90-69 at Maples Pavilion on Dec. 23 in the Pac-12 opener.

On the Stanford Cardinal podcast with Daniel:

#1 MBB the Cardinal (3-6) lost a close contest 68-64 to the Arizona State Sun Devils (10-1) in their last game Sun Dec 4th. The Cardinal got good efforts from Spencer Jones 13 points and Harrison Ingram and Michael Jones both scored 12 points.

#2 The Cardinal face the Green Bay Phoenix (2-8) who are struggling in their own right this Friday night at Maples Pavilion. The Cardinal have won only three games and have the home floor advantage.

#3 Stanford women (10-1) have won four straight games, five of their last six games including a win over the Gonzaga Bulldogs (7-2) in their last game 84-63. The Cardinal are getting offense and defense on both sides of the basketball and it might be safe to say look for this team to be a huge threat when March comes rolling around.

#4 The Cardinal match up against the Tennessee Vols (6-5) who have won four of their last five games. Tip is a 12 noon at Maples Pavilion how do you see this match up on Sunday.

#5 On Monday the Cardinal football team announced a new head coach Troy Taylor who comes from Sacramento State. Taylor help bring three Big Sky titles after taking over the Hornets football program in Dec 2018. Stanford athletic director Bernard Muir said “Troy’s credentials stood out”

The Cal Bears are preparing to host Eastern Washington this Wednesday night at Haas Pavilion and Cal is hoping to get in the win column which Cal has the home floor advantage. Despite the fact that their 0-9 right up there for the worst starts for a power five team.

The Bears have actually played better the last couple of games decently against USC for 31 minutes and went cold missed 13 straight shots and they went into Arizona and it was probably their best performance of the year on the road. To play on the road in the Pac 12 at the McKale Center it wasn’t a win for Cal but it was a competitive game.

Not too many people would have given Cal a fighting chance to challenge the Wildcats but they were giving them a good battle.

On the Cal Bears podcast with Morris:

#1 Morris after a tough loss at Notre Dame last week the Cal Bears redeemed themselves with a rather convincing win over the Arizona at Cal Berkeley last Saturday 49-31.

#2 Basically the mantra was give the ball to Jaydn Ott and when Cal quarterback Jack Plummer did Ott was off to the races carrying for 274 yards and three touchdowns.

#3 On a second play of the first quarter from scrimmage Ott was so reliable he took the ball and ran for 73 yards. Ott also who appeared to have been stopped on another play turned around and took the ball for an 18 yard carry.

#4 Cal head coach Justin Wilcox said of Ott that he’d seen flashes for a long time and has a lot of ability to take it to the house. Morris do you view this game as a break out game for Ott?

#5 On Sat Oct 1st the Bears head to Pullman to take on the Washington State Cougars. The Cougars got edged by the Oregon Ducks 44-41 before that loss the Cougars had won three straight games. This no doubt will be another big test for coach Wilcox and the Bears.

#1 Drew Pyne quarterback of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (1-2) made inroads in his first game under center for the Irish. Pyne threw for 150 yards and two touchdowns in the Notre Dame 24-17 win in South Bend Indiana over the Cal Bears (2-1).

#2 Morris the win was also pretty special for Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman it was his first victory as head coach for Notre Dame.

#3 The Irish came in ranked No.5 to start the season and had to comeback from behind three times to beat the Bears by a touchdown.

#4 Morris, tough finish for the Bears missed a last second shot when Cal quarterback Jack Plummer let one loose in the end zone as the ball bounced several players and receiver Jeremiah Hunter had it in his hands but the ball ended up off his hands and on the end zone grass.

#5 The Arizona Wildcats (2-1) will be playing the Bears next Sat Sep 24th at Cal Memorial. The Wildcats are coming off a 31-28 win against the North Dakota State Bison (2-1). Wildcats quarterback Jayden de Laura threw for 229 yards and one touchdown. Morris how do you see the Wildcats and Bears matching up this coming Saturday?

Pac 12 podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: With USC and UCLA pulling out who will fill their bill in the Pac 12?

On the Pac 12 podcast with Jerry F:

#1 Pac 12 college presidents and chancellors Friday gave the Pac 12 the nod to “explore all expansion options” after UCLA and USC decision to move to the Big Ten.

#2 The Pac 12 presidents said they are committed to upgrading the Pac 12 for the excellence of the students athletes. With UCLA and USC leaving there is no doubt it leaves a huge void.

#3 LA is a huge TV market second in the nation it’s a big task to replace a USC and UCLA and the Pac 12 as of yesterday are not sure where to start looking.

#4 As of Friday’s announcement the Pac 12 colleges are not only scrambling to replace USC and UCLA but Washington and Oregon are also considering joining the Big Ten what impact will that further on the Pac 12 to lose the Huskies and Ducks.

#5 The loss of USC and UCLA not only impacts the football and basketball programs but all the other sports as well and some of the rivalries as well. The Pac 12 has also suffered in it’s TV Network as well in recent years.

Arizona holds off challenge from Cardinal 84-80

Stanford gave top-seed Arizona all it could handle in Thursday’s quarterfinal round of the Pac-12 men’s basketball tournament in Las Vegas. The No. 2-ranked Wildcats held off an inspired Cardinal team to win 84-80.

Christian Koloko topped the U of A scoring with 24 points to go with nine rebounds and four assists, followed by Bennedict Mathurin with 20 points and seven rebounds, as the Wildcats (29-3) struggled with Stanford for the second time this season before prevailing, Azuolas Tubelis added seven rebounds and five assists, and point guard Kerr Kriisa had 10 points and five assists before leaving with an injury in the final minute.

The nine-seed Cardinal opened the tournament with a last-second win over Arizona State on Wednesday and opened Thursday’s game with a barrage of 3-pointers, going 11 for 20 behind the arc while shooting 54 percent against the league’s top defense.

Spencer Jones bagged a game-high 28 points – 13 in the first half – followed by Harrison Ingram with 16. Jones was 12 of 18 overall from the field, including 4 of 7 3-pointers. Ingram and Michael O’Connell (11 points) each had four assists.

Arizona led 49-37 at halftime and outscored the Cardinal 44-43 in the final 20 minutes. The Cardinal were 6 of 8 behind the arc in the first half and never allowed the Wildcats to build a big lead.

Down the stretch, Arizona took an 82-77 lead on a Koloko dunk, but the Cardinal (16-16) responded with a 3-pointer by Ingram, cutting Stanford’s deficit to 82-80 with 13 seconds remaining, The Cardinal fouled Pelle Larsson, who made a pair of free throws with 8.5 seconds to play, accounting for the final score.

The Wildcats will face Colorado in the semifinals, while Stanford awaits a possible postseason invite to a tournament other than the Big Dance.

#1 Anytime you know your going to face the Arizona Wildcats (28-3) you know you have your work cut out for you such was the case in Saturday’s 89-61drilling of the basket by the Wildcats who threw up 62% of their shots from the floor against the Cal Bears (12-19).

#2 The Wildcats didn’t show any ware at all after playing five games in ten days in an almost NBA type schedule the Wildcats have won nine of their last ten games.

#3 But what may have been most impressive was the Cats put up 89 points despite having to deal with Cal’s plodding pace, and a couple of impressive, but short-lived stretches of play by the Bears.

#4 Oumar Ballo, the transfer from No. 1 Gonzaga, led the Cats with 16 points on 7 for 7 shooting from the floor. Ballo was the biggest piece of Arizona’s octet of reserves that combined to shoot 18 of 24 from the floor and 7 for 7 from the foul line.

#5 Next up for Cal the Washington State Cougars (18-13) to open the Pac 12 Tournament who have won five of their last six games and also defeated the Oregon Ducks (18-13) by 20, 94-74 at Washington State on Saturday. This will be game one for Cal at the Pac 12 Tournament on Wednesday.

Fresh off clinching the Pac-12 regular season title, No. 2 Arizona returned home to McKale Center in Tucson and held off inspired Stanford 81-69 in men’s basketball Thursday.

Bennedict Mathurin led the Wildcats with 24 points, followed by Christian Koloko with 21 points and 10 rebounds, as U of A (27-3 overall, 17-2 Pac-12) remained undefeated at home in its first season under Coach Tommy Lloyd. Kerr Kriisa added seven assists and Azuolas Tubelis chipped in with 11 points.

Arizona also clinched its first conference championship in four years.

After defeating No. 16 Southern California on Tuesday in Los Angeles, Arizona came out sluggish against the Cardinal (15-14 overall, 8-11 Pac-12), shooting poorly while Stanford built a nine-point lead in the first half, eventually whittled down to a 39-37 Cardinal lead at halftime. Stanford made more baskets in the first half (12) than they did in their entire loss to California.

But the Wildcats pulled away after the intermission, outscoring the Cardinal 44-30, as Stanford’s late-season tailspin continued with its sixth loss in seven games. Mathurin had a personal 8-0 run against the Cardinal to open the second half that put U of A up 67-58.

Arizona stayed close by making 16 points off 11 Cardinal turnovers. Things didn’t go much better for Stanford in the second half, making 3 of 9 from 3-point range while finishing the game with 17 turnovers.

Spencer Jones led the Cardinal with 22 points, followed by Michael O’Connell with 16 points – all scored in the first half. Maxime Raynaud added 10 points and seven rebounds, and Harrison Ingram led the Cardinal with nine boards.

Stanford made 15 of 28 in the first 20 minutes, including 7 of 10 behind the arc.\

Stanford finishes the regular season in Tempe on Saturday, visiting Arizona State.

On Cal Bears basketball podcast:

#1 Cal Bears (9-10) are on a five game skid and fell behind the eight ball in their last game against the Arizona Wildcats (16-2) last Sunday at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley in a 96-71 loss.

#2 Cal couldn’t get past Arizona all game long and they pulled it off without one of their top scorers Azuolas Tubelis who was out with a upper body injury. The Wildcats got top scoring from Christian Koloko with 19 points.

#3 The Bears Jordan Shepherd led Cal with 21 points the only Cal player to score in double figures.

#4 Michael, talk about Cal head coach Mark Fox he tries to set the offense as all but Shepherd were in single figures what can coach Fox do to spruce things up on the offense?

#5 Cal opens up a two game Southland series starting on Thursday night at Pauley Pavilion against UCLA (14-2). The Bruins are going well as they beat the Wildcats on Tuesday 75-59 in a game that wasn’t even close. The Bruins beat the Bears the last time the two teams met on Jan 8th in an eight point win 60-52.
