#1 Former San Jose Shark and New York Islanders forward Anthony Duclair suffered a lower body injury was injured during Saturday’s game against the Montreal Canadiens. The Isles ended up defeating the Habs 4-3. Islanders head coach Patrick Roy said of the Duclair injury, “We don’t like to lose players, first of all,” Roy said. “And secondly, I mean, all I care right now is to see him be back 100 percent and feeling good when he’s back. That’s where the focus is.”

#2 Luke Hughes and Brett Pesce made their New Jersey Devils appearances on Thursday night against the Detroit Red Wings. Hughes suffered from left shoulder injury. Hughes said it’s been a long time coming and he was excited to be able to play in his first game. Pesce who signed a six year contract with New Jersey had surgery on his fractured fibula.

#3 Tickets for the Four Nations Face Off that will see NHL games in Canada, Finland, Sweden, and the US Feb 12-20. Tickets for 4 Nations Face Off will go on sale next week. The tournament will feature NHL players who will be representing Canada, Finland, Sweden and the US. It will be seven games over nine days and four games at the Belle Centre in Montreal and three games which includes the championship to be played at TD Garden in Boston.

#4 The St Louis Blues forward Robert Thomas will be out at least six weeks due to a right ankle fracture he incurred Tuesday in a game against the Winnipeg Jets. Thomas had two assists against the Jets but missed the final 11:58 and had an x-ray done that revealed the fracture.

#5 Len, have to ask you how surprised are you that San Jose Sharks remain winless through eight games. The Sharks in their last three games have lost by at least two goals or more. They face off against the Vegas Golden Knights in Vegas this Saturday how difficult will it be for the Sharks to get in win column against the Knights in Vegas?

Duclair Gets 2 Points In His Return Game At The Tank As Tampa Bay Lightning Beat The San Jose Sharks 4-1

San Jose, CA – The San Jose Sharks host the Tampa Bay Lightning in Anthony Duclair’s return to the tank. The Sharks hope to turn it around here at the SAP Center against the Lightning who are 37-25-6 and fourth in the Atlantic Division.

Tampa Bay have won four straight games and have for years been one of the toughest opponents in the NHL. The Sharks lost their sixth game in row after the Lightning came back after the Sharks tied it 1-1 in the first period. Tampa Bay wins it 4-1.

The first period was an exciting surprise for fans watching the game, because it went from day to night at the drop of a hat. The first goal was scored by Tampa Bay in the first five minutes courtesy of Nicholas Paul.

Paul’s 19th was off an unfortunate bounce for San Jose goalie Mackenzie Blackwood, making it 1-0 early in the period. The Sharks tied it up on a breakaway goal from their young star William Eklund, who was assisted by Jacob MacDonald. 1-1 and it was that way until the first intermission. Duclair was awarded a big ovation from the San Jose crowd when he was put on the jumbotron, but had a quiet opening period in his return to SJ. 

Quiet second period for both teams. The only thing that got the crowd on their feet was a fight between Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Conor Sheary that didn’y last even 30 seconds, but was enough to keep the fans energetic. 1-1 still by third intermission.

While on a power play, Brayden Point scored a goal past Blackwood, giving him 39 on the season so far and the Lightning a 2-1 lead early in the third period.

The Lightning weren’t done in the third. Duclair got on the board with a goal that counted for his 20th of the season and recording his 80th assist on the season was Nikita Kucherov as Tampa Bay gained a two goal lead in the final period and the momentum seemed to be nowhere near the Sharks favor.

The nail in the coffin was Point scoring his second goal of the night on a timer assisted by Kucherov (his 81st assist) and Duclair (his second point of the night).

The positive for the Sharks in this game was that Eklund now has 5 points in 5 consecutive home games, but other than that, there was nothing to write home about. Next game for the Sharks will be Saturday against Conor Bedard and the Chicago Blackhawks as the race for the draft lottery continues.

#1 Troy, the New York Islanders just really took it to the San Jose Sharks on Thursday at SAP Center here in San Jose. Scoring four goals in the second period to bury the Sharks 7-2.

#2 In the Sharks last four out of six games they have given up six or more goals and had given up seven goals in three of those.

#3 The Sharks got scoring help from Thomas Bordeleau and Mike Hoffman in their ninth consecutive loss. The Sharks just couldn’t get any offense going in the five goal loss.

#4 The Sharks started Magnus Chrona who save 26 shots but allowed the whopping seven goals another tough outing for Chrona.

#5 The Sharks are trying to rebuild again with their recent trades getting draft picks for Anthony Duclair who was dealt to the Tampa Bay Lightning and Tomas Hertl who was dealt to the Vegas Golden Knights for a 2025 number one draft pick and forward David Edstrom.

Sharks Fall 3-2 in a Shootout with the Stars

The San Jose Sharks fell 3-2 in a shootout to the Dallas Stars on Saturday. Stars goals came from Radek Faksa and Jason Robertson. Matt Duchene and Jamie Benn scored in the shootout. Jake Oettinger made 21 saves for the win.

Sharks goals came from William Eklund and Filip Zadina. Anthony Duclair scored in the shootout. Magnus Chrona made 36 saves in the loss. This is the Sharks’ sixth loss in a row, though they did get a point against the top team in the Central Division.

With Mackenzie Blackwood on IR, Chrona is bound to see a few more starts before the end of the season. His last start for the Sharks was on December 28, when he was pulled after giving up four goals in the first period. Saturday, his performance was better, giving up just two goals on 38 shots. After the game, Sharks forward Luke Kunin said, of the young goaltender:

“He was great tonight. Some huge saves for us, really kept us in that game. I thought we had a pretty good game for the most part but those stretches where we were giving up a lot, he was there to back us up. Great performance by him tonight.”

Of the Sharks game outside the net, Sharks Head Coach David Quinn said: “The faceoffs killed us. I think they won almost 70% of their faceoffs. You’re chasing the game a lot when you’re losing that many faceoffs. But I thought overall we played a good hockey game.” The Stars did win 67.2% of the faceoffs.

The Sharks scored first at 4:39 of the first period. William Eklund and Luke Kunin entered the zone two-on-one and Eklund took a shot that Oettinger kicked back out. Eklund was ready to catch the rebound and scored with a quick wrist shot. Assists went to Kunin and Jan Rutta.

The Stars tied it at 3:08 of the second period. Sam Steel deflected Craig Smith’s shot from the boards. The puck trickled through Chrona but still needed an extra push from Radek Faksa to cross the line.

The Sharks took the lead back with a goal at 17:08 of the second. Filip Zadina spun around in the faceoff circle and took his shot. The puck bounced up over Oettinger and hit the post before a Star swept it out of the net. An official review determined that the puck did cross the line. Luke Kunin got an assist.

Fabian Zetterlund blocked a shot with his ankle in the final minutes of the period. He had to be helped off the ice and back to the dressing room.

The Stars tied it again at 4:08 of the third period with a power play goal just 3 seconds into that power play. Jason Robertson took a shot from the top of the faceoff circle, putting the puck into the side of the net. Assists went to Miro Heiskanen and Jamie Benn.

Early in the third period, Nico Sturm returned to the bench with an injury, possibly an elbow or a stick to the neck.

At the end of regulation, the Stars had outshot the Sharks 36 to 20. Dallas took a penalty about half way through overtime but the Sharks could not take advantage of that. The Sharks had three shots in overtime and the Stars had two.

The shootout went to seven rounds. Matt Duchene and Jamie Benn scored for the Stars. Benn scored the winner while falling to the ice after tripping over Chrona’s stick.

Jake Oettinger stopped shots from Filip Zetterlund, William Eklund, Kyle Granlund, Filip Zadina, Mike Hoffman and Luke Kunin. Anthony Duclair scored for the Sharks. Magnus Chrona stopped shots from Jason Robertson, Roope Hintz, Wyatt Johnston, Logan Stankoven and Joe Pavelski.

The Sharks next play on Sunday at 4:00 PM PT in St. Paul, Minnesota, against the Wild.

Sharks Fall 3-2 in OT, Vlasic Scores Third Game in a Row

The San Jose Sharks were defeated in overtime 3-2 by the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday at the Honda Center in Anaheim. Isac Lundestrom, Troy Terry and Frank Vatrano scored for the Ducks. John Gibson made 26 saves for the win. Anthony Duclair and Marc-Edouard Vlasic scored for the Sharks. Kaapo Kahkonen made 31 saves in the loss.

The Sharks had a lead through most of the game. To lose after that had to be frustrating. After the game, Sharks Captain Logan Couture said “I thought we were the better team for a lot of the game but third period they kind of took over. They had a lot of looks, we looked tired at the end there.”

Sharks Head Coach David Quinn said that the team is playing well now, despite this loss: “The one thing that you feel good about right now is how we’re playing now and our compete and we’re not giving up a lot of goals and just overall playing better hockey.”

Anaheim celebrated as if they had scored at 1:58 of the first period. But the whistle had blown and the puck only went into the net as Kahkonen was pushed in as well.

Less than 20 seconds later, the Ducks did score. Isac Lundestrom slipped behind the defense and scored with a wrist shot at 2:12. Assists went to Mason McTavish and Jakob Silfverberg

Anthony Duclair tied the game with a power play goal at 6:59. Shakir Mukhamadullin took a slap shot from the blue line and Duclair caught the rebound. Assists went to Mukhamadullin and Mike Hoffman. That was Mukhamadullin’s first NHL point in his third game.

Marc-Edouard Vlasic scored from the blue line with a slap shot at 17:57 of the second. Assists went to Kyle Burroughs and William Eklund. The goal extended Vlasic’s goal streak to three games.

With the Ducks net empty, Troy Terry tied the game at 18:59 of the third period. With a scrum in front of the net, Terry found the puck and put it in. Assists went to Leo Carlsson and Adam Henrique.

Frank Vatrano scored the overtime winner 4:07 into overtime. His wrist shot went past Kahkonen’s blocker as the goaltender tried moved across the goal mouth.

The Sharks were out-shot 34-28 by the Ducks. In the face-off circle, they won 45.5% of the draws. Alexander Barabanov was injured half way through the game. After the game, Quinn said that he did not believe the injury was “too serious.”

The Sharks next play on February 14 at 4:30 PM PT in Winnipeg against the Jets.

Sharks Lose to Senators 5-4; Sens Tarasenko gets gamer with 5 seconds left

The San Jose Sharks fell 5-4 to the Ottawa Senators on Saturday. Claude Giroux, Thomas Chabot, Brady Tkachuk, Drake Batherson, and Vladimir Tarasenko scored for the Senators. Joonas Korpisalo made 14 saves for the win. Anthony Duclair, Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Kevin Labanc and Filip Zadina scored for the Sharks. Mackenziie Blackwood made 36 saves in the loss.

The scoring was back and forth through all three periods and then ended with a goal in the last three seconds. After the game, Anthony Duclair talked about the importance of playing every second of the game: “Obviously, it’s tough to go down that way, especially in the last few seconds there but that’s a thing we’ve got to continue improving on is playing the full 60 right to the end there.”

Sharks Head Coach David Quinn said: “I’m just really disappointed because, you know, we did a lot of good things in Montreal and didn’t follow it up tonight.” He went on to describe what was lacking in Saturday’s game:

“I just thought it was our lack of compete, really, throughout the night. I didn’t think we competed anywhere near the level we needed to, regardless of your opponent. I thought our puck play, we really struggled. There just weren’t many areas that we were real efficient in tonight.”

Claude Giroux scored the first goal of the game at 4:12 of the first period. Finding the puck lose in traffic in front of the net, he snapped it over the goalie. Assists went to Brady Tkachuk and Artem Zub.

Thomas Chabot made it 2-0 for the Senators at 9:58 with a slap shot from the faceoff circle. Assists went to Vladimir Tarasenko and Tim Stützle.

Anthony Duclair got the Sharks on the board at 12:35 with a slap shot from high in the slot. Assists went to Alexander Barabanov and Mario Ferraro.

The Sharks and Senators were close in shots for the first period, at 9-8 Sharks. In the second period, however, the Senators out-shot the Sharks 22-4. Nonetheless, the Sharks scored with two of those shots.

Marc-Edouard Vlasic tied the game at 3:53 of the second. Following up a 2-on-1 by Anthony Duclair and Mikael Granlund, he scored his first goal since January 2023. Assists went to Duclair and Granlund.

Kevin Labanc gave the Sharks the lead at 6:20 with a wrist shot off a sneaky backwards pass from Mario Ferraro. Assists went to Ferraro and Mike Hoffman.

Brady Tkachuk tied the game again at 7:11. Drake Batherson made a pass from the slot to Tkachuk as Tkachuk skated into the zone from the bench. Assists went to Batherson and Tim Stützle.

Batherson gave the Senators the lead at 12:59. He scored with a wrist shot off a rebound that came to him at the edge of the faceoff circle. Assists went to Artem Zub and Tim Stützle.

Filip Zadina tied the game again at 16:56 of the third period. He scored with a slap shot off a cross-ice pass from Tomas Hertl. Assists went to Hertl and Mario Ferraro.

Vladimir Tarasenko scored the game-winner. He caught a rebound off off Zub’s shot from the blue line. Assists went to Artem Zub and Tim Stützle.

The Sharks were out-shot 11-5 in the third period for a total shot count of 41-18 Senators. The Sharks won 42.6% of the draws. Their power play had two shots in two opportunities and gave up one short-handed shot. They gave up four shots on two penalty kills and had one short-handed short.

The Sharks next play on Monday at 9:00 AM PT in Buffalo against the Sabres.

Sharks Buried by Avalanche 6-2 in Denver, Studnicka Makes Sharks Debut

The San Jose Sharks were defeated 6-2 by the Colorado Avalanche Sunday. Colorado goals came from Valeri Nichushkin, Mikko Rantanen, Miles Wood, Ryan Johansen, and two from Nathan MacKinnon. Alexander Georgiev made 27 saves for the win. Tomas Hertl scored twice for the Sharks and Mackenzie Blackwood made 23 saves in the loss.

The Sharks’ newest player, Jack Studnicka, made his debut Sunday. Studnicka was acquired Friday from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for defenseman Nick Cicek and a 2024 sixth-round pick. Sunday he had one shot, three hits and won 4 of 16 faceoffs in 12:18 time on the ice.

After the game, he described his performance as “Just okay. I didn’t really have my legs, it’s kind of been a whirlwind. That’s no excuse but it’s been a lot of travel recently. Some ok moments, some good moments, some moments I’ve got to work on.”

Sharks Head Coach David Quinn said, of Studnicka’s first game: “Tough game to be thrown into, you know, I’m sure he’s just glad it’s over with. Didn’t really think he had a lot of pop in his skating tonight which usually he does. So it’s a tough situation to be put into but I thought he was fine.”

Less than three minutes into the game, Sharks defenseman Jacob MacDonald was called for boarding Sam Malinski. Malinski seemed to catch his skate and was off-balance before MacDonald hit him. Malinski was injured and bleeding. He missed a substantial amount of time in the first period, but returned to play before the period ended. MacDonald, however, was given a game misconduct.

During the ensuing five minute penalty, Colorado scored once. The Sharks penalty kill held the Avalanche off for 4:30. In the final seconds, Jonathan Drouin found Valeri Nichushkin next to the net for a tap-in goal. Assists went to Drouin and Nathan MacKinnon.

The Sharks were back on the penalty kill at 10:37, and Colorado scored at 12:15. Mikko Rantanen deflected a shot from MacKinnon, again late in the power play. Assists went to MacKinnon and Devon Toews.

Miles Wood made it 3-0 with a sharp angle shot at 18:20. Assists went to Ross Colton and Jonathan Drouin. Nathan MacKinnon made it 4-0 at 3:44 of the second period with an unassisted goal.

Tomas Hertl scored on the power play to make it 4-1 at 9:01 of the second. Hertl deflected a shot from the blue line by Mikael Granlund. The secondary assist went to Alexander Barabanov.

Ryan Johansen made it 5-1 at 9:01 of the third period. A rebound off of a Caleb Jones shot went right to Johansen with an open net in front of him. Assists went to Jones and Andrew Cogliano.

Hertl scored his second of the night, again on the power play. Right in front of ther net, Hertl gathered up a rebound after William Eklund took a shot. Assists went to Eklund and Granlund.

Nathan MacKinnon scored his second of the night at 15:11, into an empty net. The Sharks pulled their goaltender with five minutes left in the game.

The Sharks did well in shot count for the game, just one behind Colorado’s 29. In the face-off circle, the Sharks struggled again, winning only 38.2% of the draws.

The Sharks started the game missing several veteran players. Apart from the injured players, Anthony Duclair was a healthy scratch. After the game, David Quinn declined to share details about that decision and said only that Duclair would be back.

Sharks next play on Tuesday back in San Jose at 7:30 PM PT against the Los Angeles Kings.

Sharks Fall 1-0 to Coyotes, Two Goals Called Back

The San Jose Sharks were shutout 1-0 by the Arizona Coyotes Friday. Matias Maccelli scored the only goal in the game and Connor Ingram made 21 saves for the shutout win. Kaapo Kahkonen made 23 saves for the Sharks. It was the fifth time this season that the Sharks have been shut out. The Coyotes were coming off of a four game losing streak.

After the game, Sharks forward Anthony Duclair said: “I thought we just needed some more energy. I think we could have had a better start, I think we just played an okay game. That’s what happens. Obviously they were a desperate hockey team on the other side, losing four in a row.”

Sharks Head Coach David Quinn also commented on the team’s lack of energy:

“To manage just to kind of hang around I think it’s another example of our progress. I think a month ago if we had this type of energy we wouldn’t have been in the situation we were in by the end of the game. So, disappointing we lost, our PK was good, we didn’t draw a penalty which was disappointing but, again, you know, we hung around, had a chance to tie it.”

The one goal of the game came at 14:45 of the second period. Nick Bjugstad took a shot into some traffic on the right side of the net. Kahkonen stopped that but sent a rebound out to the right, to Matias Maccelli. Kahkonen could not get across in time to stop that one. Bjugstad and J.J. Moser got the assists.

It looked like the game was tied at 7:40 of the third period. William Eklund put the puck in the net off a rebound from a shot by Luke Kunin. However, the Coyotes challenged the goal. On review, contact between Kunin’s leg and Ingram’s stick was seen as goaltender interference and the goal was called back.

The game seemed to be tied again at 16:01 of the third period, when Mikael Granlund put the puck in the net. It was a beautiful goal, with Granlund skating through several Coyotes before scoring. But the Coyotes challenged again. The review found that Anthony Duclair was offside and the goal was called back.

The Sharks took four penalties and killed them all but they had no power plays. The shot count was close, 24-21 Coyotes. In the face-off circle, the Sharks struggled, winning just 37.5% of the draws. This was due in part to the absence of Nico Sturm, who was placed on injured reserved Friday.

The Sharks next play on Sunday at 5:00 PM PT in Colorado against the Avalanche.

Kraken Sink Sharks 7-1; San Jose drops fifth out of last six games

The San Jose Sharks fell 7-1 to the Seattle Kraken at Climate Pledge Arena on Wednesday. Seattle goals were scored by Brandon Tanev, Oliver Bjorstrand, Adam Larsson, Yanni Gourde, Jared and McCann, with two goals from Eeli Tolvanen. Joey Daccord made 13 saves for the win. Mike Hoffman scored for the Sharks, Kaapo Kahkonen started the game and made 13 saves on 17 shots. Mackenzie Blackwood came in to finish and made 10 saves on 13 shots.

The Sharks had eight defensemen in the lineup, due to unavailable forwards. Kevin Labanc was out due to an injury sustained in Monday’s game. Nico Sturm was away for personal reasons. Still injured are Logan Couture, Oskar Lindblom and Alexander Barabanov. Although the team used eight defensemen, Marc-Edouard Vlasic was a scratch.

After the game, Anthony Duclair was asked if the team’s poor performance was a result of the missing regulars. He said: “Doesn’t matter. Doesn’t matter who’s in the lineup, you gotta compete. You’re in the NHL, you gotta compete and if you don’t compete that’s what’s gonna happen in the first period. It doesn’t matter who’s in the lineup, everybody has to be ready to go and it cost us.”

The first period was the worst for the Sharks. They gave up four goals, and but for an off-side call, it would have been five. The Sharks managed seven shots in the period but allowed seventeen to the Kraken.

“We can’t start a game like that in the NHL, you’re going to get embarrassed. We’ve been embarrassed before this season but nothing like the first period today. That was just unacceptable,” said Duclair. Asked what went wrong for the team, he said: “We just got out-competed, that’s not the xs and os, it’s win battles and losing battles one v one all over the ice and it cost us.”

Sharks Head Coach David Quinn went into more detail:

“Embarrassing. We weren’t ready to play. Two break aways in the first minute and a half. I mean just absolutely freaking embarrassing. We lost every single battle, got beat off walls every time there was a 50/50 puck battle we’re fishing for pucks get on the wrong side of it. One guy would get beat one on one and the other guy would dive in.”

In light of that start, the second period might have been worse. The Kraken only had four shots, but they had a four goal lead. The Sharks, trailing as they were, still had just one shot in the period. The total shot count for the game was 30-14 Kraken. The Sharks even had an unusually bad night in the face-off circle. Though they were missing Nico Sturm, their second best in that department, the rest of the team’s top three were present. Still, the Sharks won just 48% of the draws.

Quinn was asked if Wednesday’s performance was a symptom of the team being fragile this season. Quinn seemed out of patience with that excuse:

“I don’t want to hear about freakin fragile, okay? It’s the National freakin Hockey League and you better show up ready to play every freakin night. I don’t care about fragile, sometimes you don’t have it, I get it, but you want to show up and play with the right freakin intentions and we didn’t do it.”

#1 Calgary Flames forward Elias Lindholm signed a brand new six year contract worth $29.1 million worth $4.85 million per season. Linholm had made it pretty clear that he wanted to stay on with the Flames and got his wish. Linholm had 325 points, 139 goals, and 186 assists in 369 games with Calgary over five years.

#2 The Florida Panthers Matthew Tkachuk said he’s ready for the Panthers camp. Tkachuk suffered a fractured sternum during the first period of game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Las Vegas Knights on June 8th. Tkachuk said he’s feeling fine and is ready to start the pre season. Len, how important is it to have Tkachuk back.

#3 Tomas Tatar signed a one year deal with the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday for undisclosed amount. Tatar formerly played for the New Jersey Devils last season having 48 points, 20 goals, 28 assists, and was a plus 41 in 82 games for New Jersey.

#4 Len, the Edmonton Oilers first line players Evander Kane, Connor McDavid, and Connor Brown looks like they’ll be a strong line going into the season for the Oilers. The Oilers second line Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Leon Draisaitl, and Zack Hyman. They’re identical to the first line how do you see the Oilers strengths going into the season with these players.
