By Michael Roberson

SACRAMENTO–The Sacramento Kings lost control and home-court advantage of the NBA Western Conference Quarterfinals with a 123-116 loss to the Golden State Warriors.

Sacramento got off to a 6-0 start and seemed in total control, leading by as much as 10 points the first 12 minutes of the game.

The Warriors used the second quarter to flex their muscles and flipped the 10-point deficit to an advantage of six on their behalf, leading by four at recess, 60-56.

De’ Aaron Fox led the Kings with 17 points, five rebounds and five assists, apparently not adversely affected by the broken finger. Two of his teammates also eclipsed double-figures: Center Domantis Sabonis (11) and forward Keegan Murray (10).

The Bay Area Boys had four hoopers over ten points: Forward Klay Thompson (16) , guard Stephen Curry (12), forward Andrew Wiggins (11) and forward Draymond Green (11).

The Kings opened the third quarter on a 5-0 run, temporarily taking the lead back, 61-60, but the Warriors didn’t want to relinquish their margin and earned their largest lead of nine points, 99-90 after 36 minutes.

The Warriors increased the gap to 12 points in the final stanza, and held on to a seven-point victory, 123-116, and captured the Golden1 Castle, while seizing the momentum in the Northern California Series, 3-2.

The Warriors got over their Road Futility Woes at the perfect time, and Kings’ guard De’ Aaron Fox credits their defense for the away win.

Sacramento Head Coach, Mike Brown praises the Warriors great play, but is confident the Kings will bring it in San Francisco Friday Night.

Fox led the Kings with 24 points, 9 assists and 7 assists. Domantas Sabonis contributed 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Malik Monk also tallied 21 points.

The Warriors had four players with at least 20 points. Curry hit 31 points and gave eight assists, Thompson (25), Green (21) and Wiggins (20).

The Kings have to go to Chase Center and wrestle back home court advantage from the defending champs, then regain control of their Kingdom in the California State Capital city on Sunday, April 30, to advance to the second round against either the Los Angeles Lakers or the Memphis Grizzlies.

The series has officially begun, because a road team won on the opposing team’s court. NBA Action is FANTASTIC!

Warriors Beat Kings For the First Road Win of This Series 123-116

By Barbara Mason

Head Coach Steve Kerr was having no part of the statistics that teams that win game five in a series go on to win the series. The Golden State Warriors (44-38) will concentrate on protecting the ball and defensive rebounds as they take on the Sacramento Kings (48-34) in game five of their series at Golden One Center. The Warriors improved their series record to 3-2 with a 123-116 win on Wednesday night in Sacramento.

All eyes were on the injured De’Aaron Fox as he took the court after breaking his left index finger in the fourth quarter of game four. He was sporting a protective splint and the question remained, how will this affect not only his dribbling but his shooting. We got that answer the first quarter of the game.

After the first 12 minutes of play, the Kings led by a slim margin 36-33 after leading by as much as ten during the quarter. Any concerns regarding Fox were laid to rest when he hit three shots from downtown and finished the first quarter with 11 points.

With 3:54 left in the second quarter the Warriors tied up the game at 50 when Klay Thompson hit his third triple of the game. Both Andrew Wiggins and Thompson had four personal fouls. Thompson had the hot hand in the first half with 16 points. The Kings Fox had the high for the team with 17 points. At the half the Warriors led 60-56.

The Warriors turned this game in their favor in the third quarter leading 99-90. It would all come down to the fourth quarter to reveal who would take the series lead back to Chase Friday night.

The Kings fought back and with 1:11 left in the game trailed 117-114. Sacramento could not get over the hump. The Warriors playoff experienced trumped when all was said and done. It was the Warriors by eight 122-114 with 22.4 left in the game and Golden State could smell their first road win of this series.

Stephen Curry finished the game with 31 points. He moved past Magic Johnson for 15th on the all- time playoff scoring list in this game. Thompson had 25 points and Draymond Green was amazing with 21 points. The last time Green scored 20 points in a game was 2019 against the Rockets. Kevon Looney had an amazing 22 rebounds.

Despite playing with a broken finger, Fox finished with 24 points. Domantas Sabonis had 21 points as did Malik Monk off the bench.

Friday night the Warriors will take the series back to Chase Center. They will be looking to close out this series now leading 3-2. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:00 PM.

Giants Win 7-3 secure 5th Win In A Row Against Cardinals at Oracle Park

San Francisco Giants’ Blake Sabol strikes out against the St. Louis Cardinals during the third inning at Oracle Park in San Francisco on Wed Apr 26, 2023 (AP News photo)

By Troy Ewers

SAN FRANCISCO–As the sunset in San Francisco on Wednesday night, it was the Giants against the Cardinals in Oracle Park and Tuesday night’s heroics from Blake Sabol were fresh in fans’ minds as they walked in the ballpark. As the Giants picked up their fifth straight win over the Cards 7-3 on Wednesday night.

The starters were Anthony DeSclafani and Steven Matz and this game started with a bang and Giants fans thought maybe the clock had struck midnight on their luck as Paul Goldschmidt made a big statement with his first two at bats as he had two big solo home runs which put the Cards up 2-0 to early in the night, but the very next inning for San Francisco was where we would see a spark of light as Austin Slater’s RBI single made it 2-1 Cards.

That spark of light was all the Giants needed to get back to how they looked the first two games this series. A home run that same inning from Lamonte Wade Jr. would be the mighty equalizer and the G-Men wouldn’t look back the whole game.

A wild pitch in the fifth would bring in Haniger for the go ahead run, two run home run by Wilmer Flores electrified Oracle Park in the seventh, and finally the Giants would put the nail in the coffin as Conforto and Wade Jr. would secure huge RBIs that sealed the deal in front of 21,748 Oracle fans.

There were some scary moments as a run from the Cardinals in the ninth had the fans holding their breath, but once Camillo Doval saw the mound, SF could exhale as they walked away with a big win. Making it five in a row for SF.

The Giants look to close out the series against St, Louis tomorrow and then it’s off to Mexico City for a two game series against the Padres. Starting pitchers for Thursday afternoon St Louis Miles Mikolas (0-1 ERA 7.46) and for San Francisco Logan Webb (1-4, ERA 4.40) first pitch at Oracle Park in San Francisco 12:45pm PDT.

Oakland Roots Lose To Sacramento Republic FC 1-0 In Third Round Of U.S. Open Cup

By Troy Ewers

On a night where another NorCal battle between the Warriors and Kings is taking place in California’s capital, they have a similar battle between the Oakland Roots and Sacramento Republic FC in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup that ended up in a 1-0 Sacramento Republic FC win. This game started with a complete defensive stalemate of a first half, no shots on goal recorded for either team.

The only major moment of the first half was Roots forward Hacksaw. First half ending at 0-0. The second half was different strategy for Sacramento, where it was clear they had one move, attack the back line of Oakland and shoot the ball, but the only shot on goal was from Nicholas Ross of Sacramento where he scored a deep shot to the center of the goal past Blanchette and that would break the stalemate and would be the only goal of the game.

Sacramento the whole second half was changing out their players and slowing the pace which lessened any chance of a comeback for Oakland. While this was a loss for the Roots, their sites are set on Saturday against Miami for another USL Championship matchup.

This loss may mean Roots are out of U.S. Open Cup, but it should be a wake up call to the Oakland dressing room, that the way they won games so far this season was by attacking early and making the opposing team have to play at Oakland’s pace, which is fast and the passes are deep. Still a long season, but the adjustments need to be made now or it will be a long season for other reasons.

Headline Sports podcast with Jessica Kwong: Did Jets give up too much to get Rogers?; Bucs sign Reynolds to $100.6 M deal; plus more

There is no more passing the football around in the Frozen Tundra for former Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rogers as he signs on with the New York Jets. Rogers had made it clear he was ready for a change of scenery and is relieved to be going to New York (AP News file photo)

On Headline Sports podcast with Jessica:

#1 Jessica, we lead off the program with the New York Jets and their acquisition of quarterback Aaron Rogers. Jets general manager Joe Douglas said that getting Rogers was historic for the franchise but critics are questioning at what price the Jets had to fork up a 2023 second round pick, 2024 conditional second rounder that will increase to a first rounder if Rogers participates in 65% of the regular season. Is it worth it Douglas seems to think so.

#2 The Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Bryan Reynolds got a rich eight year deal worth $106.5 million. The deal for Reynolds is the richest in Pirates history. Before signing Reynolds the Bucs were one of four big league franchises who had not signed a player for $100 million and over. The Kansas City Royals, Oakland A’s and Chicago White Sox remain the only teams who have not signed a $100 million player.

#3 New York Mets star pitcher Justin Verlander is reportedly on target to return May 3rd. Verlander has been injured since spring training and will make a rehab start this coming Friday. Verlander is recovering from a low-grade teres major strain. Verlander said it’s been frustrating but was told that his time will come and he’s just a week away.

#4 Jessica, it seems that Los Angeles Angels Mike Trout memorabilia especially from his rookie year is through the roof his 2009 Red Refractor card sold for $1 million. Turns out a Mike Trout signed little league ball went to auction and sold for $15,600. Trout’s uncle Kevin had the ball for two decades. Trout signed the ball when he was 12 years old. Uncle Kevin says if your kid is in Little League and makes it big in the big leagues get him to sign the ball now.

#5 New York Rangers head coach Gerard Gallant says the Rangers simply didn’t show up during Monday’s game on home ice at Madison Square Garden losing to the New Jersey Devils 3-1 and now tied with New Jersey at 2-2 in the series. Gerard referenced the offense scored only one goal through three period and it was the third and last period when they got on the scoreboard. On defense the Devils scored twice in the third period on Devils goaltender Akira Schmid who faced 23 shots.

The A’s Esteury Ruiz had four stolen bases. Ruiz is the first player under 24 years old to have four stolen bases in a game since Rickey Henderson did it in 1983.

Brandon Drury was the hitting star for the Angels. Drury doubled and homered and had three RBIs. In the first three games of the series, Drury has hit three home runs and knocked in nine.

The A’s will send J P Sears (0-1 ERA 4.98) to the hill to face Shohei Ohtani (3-0 ERA 0.64) on Thursday.

San Francisco Giants podcast with Troy Ewers and Vince Cestone: Sabol adds to offensive punch during Giants win streak; SF starting DeSclafani tonight

San Francisco Giants right hander Anthony DeSclafani shown here delivering in 2022 will get the start for Wed Apr 26, 2023 at Oracle Park against the St Louis Cardinals in game 3 of the four game series. (AP file photo)

On the Giants podcast with Troy Ewers and Vince Cestone:

#1 There was some worry that the Giants might falter, have a rough season, but they split with the New York Mets winning the last two games of that four game series and and winning the first two of this three game series against the St Louis Cardinals it seems the hitting has caught some fire.

#2 Wanted to ask you about catcher Blake Sabol who some had doubts about considering this is his rookie season Sabol had been making great contact of late and hit the game winning two run walk off home run on Tuesday night to defeat the St Louis Cardinals 5-4.

#3 Also Sabol can secure the back up position to Joey Bart if he keeps swinging the bat the way he has, Giants manager Gabe Kapler knows that Sacramento Rivercats catcher Gary Sanchez is chomping at the bit to get back up here too.

#4 Alex Cobb got some run support on Monday night and threw his second complete career shutout in a 4-0 six hit win against the St Louis Cardinals striking out four and walking one batter. Talk about Cobb’s command and keeping runners either in check or off the bases.

#5 Game three of this four game series tonight at Oracle Park in San Francisco. The Cards will be going with Steven Matz (0-3 ERA 6.55) he’ll be opposed by the Giants Anthony DeSclafani (1-1 ERA 2.63). The Cardinals are off to their worst 24 game start in 50 years with a 9-14 record. That goes back to the 1973 St Louis Cardinals.

Giants Sabol belts 2 run walk off HR to edge Cards 5-4 at Oracle Park

San Francisco Giants’ Blake Sabol celebrates after hitting a game-winning, two-run home run against the St. Louis Cardinals during the ninth inning at Oracle Park in San Francisco on Tue Apr 25, 2023 (AP News photo)

By Tony the Tiger Hayes

SAN FRANCISCO- San Francisco Giants (10-13) catcher Blake Sabol belted a two run walk off homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to help defat the St Louis Cardinals 5-4 to give the Giants a 2-0 lead in the three game series at Oracle Park in San Francisco.

Sabol said after the game that was one of the best moments of his life. Sabol said as soon as he hit the ball by the sound he knew and he bat flipped the bat. Sabol said he just remember screaming and rounding the bases and was jumping up and down with his teammates at home plate.

The Giants in the bottom of the ninth inning had a runner at second and the Cardinals had pitcher Ryan Helsley (0-2) in relief who gave up the home run ball to Sabol who hit it over the center field fence. Sabol said he didn’t come up there to hit a home run but to see what Helsley was offering and if he could see some of the ball out of Helsley’s hand.

Giants manager Gabe Kapler said that was a fight for your life situation for Sabol and he was down two strikes and for Sabol to connect on a pitch like that for a two run home run “it was pretty remarkable. Really cool moment, one of the cooler moments I’ve been part of since I’ve been here.” said Kapler.

The Giants were down 4-2 going into the ninth inning, Joc Pederson reached first on a fielding error by the Cards second baseman Tommy Edman. Then Mike Yastrzemski swung for an RBI double cutting the Cardinals lead to one run 4-3. So with Yastrzemski at second Sabol took Helsley to deep center for the two run walk off homer and one run win.

The Cardinals fell to 9-15 marking the Cards worst 24 game start in 50 years which had St Louis manager Oliver Marmol saying that this group has not given up yet, “This group’s not going to cave,” Marmol said. “I don’t care what people think. This will serve us extremely well when we get into September. I’ll tell you that.”

Kapler used an opener and the Giants ended up using eight pitchers, the Giants ended up surrendering three runs in the top of the eighth inning. The Giants sixth pitcher Scott Alexander gave up the three Cardinal runs, pitching 0.1 innings, three hits and three earned runs but the Giants persevered with Sabol’s two run homer to win it.

Starting pitchers for Wednesday night’s 6:45 pm tilt at Oracle Park for the Cardinals Miles Mikolas (0-1 ERA 7.46) for the Giants Logan Webb (1-4 ERA 4.40) for game 3 of the four game series.

Angels bounce back beat A’s 5-3 to even series

Los Angeles Angels’ Mike Trout (27) celebrates in the dugout after scoring off of a triple hit by Brandon Drury during the first inning against the Oakland A’s at the Big A in Anaheim Tue Apr 25, 2023 (AP News photo)

By Jerry Feitelberg

The Los Angeles Angels evened the four-game series at one apiece Tuesday night at Angel Stadium in Anaheim. The A’s sent Mason Miller to the hill to start for the Green and Gold. Miller made his Major League debut last Wednesday in Oakland when he faced the Chicago Cubs.

On Tuesday, Miller had a rough first inning. The Angels scored four times in the inning. Miller threw 39 pitches and didn’t look sharp. However, A’s manager Mark Kotsay let Miller stay in the game. The young hurler pitched well the next three innings and allowed just one hit and no runs.

The A’s, trailing 4-1, scored a run in the fifth and one in the sixth to make it a 4-3 game. Kotsay called on Adam Oller to pitch the sixth inning. Oller pitched two innings Monday night and kept the Angels off the board. Tuesday night was a different story. Oller gave up three hits, and the Angels plated an insurance run. Oller almost got out of the jam, but the A’s could not complete an inning-ending double play. The Angels win 5-3

The A’s drew blood in the first inning for the second night. With one out, first baseman Ryan Noda walked. Angels’ starter Griffin Canning struck out Brent Rooker for the second out. Jace Peterson tripled into the right field corner to drive in Noda with the A’s first run.

The A’s lead 1-0 halfway through the first inning. The A’s starter Mason Miller had a tough inning. The young flamethrower struck out Taylor Ward for the first out. Angels’ superstar Mike Trout hit a 101-mile-an-hour fastball deep into the right-field corner for a double.

Miller retired Shohei Ohtani for the second out. Miller walked Anthony Rendon. Brandon Drury, who had two home runs in Monday’s game, lined a rifle shot to centerfield that got by Esteury Ruiz for a triple. Trout and Rendon scored. Luis Rengifo singled to drive in Drury. Rengifo then stole second and scored on Gio Urshela’s single. The Angels lead 4-1. Miller threw 39 pitches in the inning.

The A’s crept closer in the top of the fifth when leadoff hitter Shea Langeliers blasted a 408-foot home run over the fence in left field. The ball had an exit velocity of 108 mph. The A’s now trail 4-2.

The A’s continued to chip away at the Angels’ lead. In the sixth, Brent Rooker started the rally by hitting a ground-rule double. The Halos’ skipper Phil Nevim made a pitching change. He brought in lefty Aaron Loup to pitch. Loup retired Jace Peterson and Jesus Aguilar.

A’s manager Mark Kotsay had Jordan Diaz pinch hit for Conner Capel. The rookie came through with a double down the left field line to drive in Rooker with the A’s third run. Oakland trails 4-3. The Angels got the run back in the bottom of the frame. Adam Oller was now pitching for the A’s.

With one out, Gio Urshela singled. The next hitter, catcher Matt Thaiss singled, and Urshela stopped at second. Oller got shortstop Zach Neto to hit a ground ball to third. The throw to second erased Thaiss, but the relay to first did not get there on time, and Neto was safe. Taylor Ward singled to drive in Urshela with the Angels’ fifth run. The Halos lead 5-3 after six.

The Angels’ bullpen did not allow the A’s a run in the game’s last three innings. Aaron Loup, Matt Moore, and Carlos Esteves allowed the A’s two hits in the last three innings to secure the win for LA 5-3.

Game Notes: With the loss, the A’s are now 5-19. The Angels improved to 12-12.

The line score for Oakland was three runs, six hits, and no errors. The big hit for the A’s was Shea Langeliers fifth dinger of the season.

The Angels’ line was five runs, ten hits, and no errors.

The line for Mason Miller was four innings pitched, five hits, four runs, six strikeouts, and one walk. Miller took the loss.

The Angels Griffin Canning was the winning pitcher. Canning went five-plus innings. He allowed four hits and three runs. Carlos Esteves earned the save.

Game three of the series will be played Wednesday night in Anaheim. The A’s will be sending Luis Medina to the hill. Medina recalled from the Las Vegas Aviators, is right-handed, and will be making his Major League debut. Lefty Patrick Sandoval will pitch for LA.

The time of the game was two hours and forty-seven minutes. There were 26,971 fans on hand to see the Angels win.
