Tyson’s 23 points not enough; Cal drops first three Pac-12 matches

The Bears began their all-Los Angeles road trip with an 82-74 loss to the USC Trojans, despite a 23-point performance from Jaylon Tyson as they have now dropped their first three Pac-12 games.

The Bears were trying to start fresh after a devastating loss to the Arizona State Sun Devils on Sunday, and they would try to do so against a USC team, who had dropped five of their previous six games coming into tonight.

Cal won the opening tip, and Keyonte Kennedy hit a jumper to put them on the board early. Joshua Morgan then made a jumper for USC, followed by a layup by Isiah Collier to make it 4-2 Trojans. 

USC maintained a small lead throughout the next several minutes, but a jumper by Jaylon Tyson tied it at 8-8, and a layup by Tyson gave the Bears a 10-8 lead. Collier hit a jumper for USC to tie it, and then Jalen Cone hit a three-ball to make it 13-10 Cal.

USC then scored seven unanswered points to take a 17-13 lead, but Cal quickly responded, as Rodney Brown Jr. hit a free throw, and Tyson tied it with a three. DJ Rodman hit a three for the Trojans to give them a 20-17 lead, but Fardaws Aimaq then laid one in, and Tyson hit a jumper to put the Bears back ahead at 21-20 with 7:42 left in the first period.

Bronny James hit a jumper to give USC the lead again, and Jalen Celestine hit a three to give the lead back to the Bears at 24-22. Rodman then hit a three to put USC back ahead, and start a 15-5 run, which would take the Trojans into the half with a 37-29 lead.

USC then hit the ground running in the second period, as Rodman hit a three to start things off. Cone hit a jumper for the Bears, but Kobe Johnson hit a three for the Trojans, and Collier laid one in to open USC’s lead to 45-31.

The Trojans led 61-44 with 12:27 remaining, as they had pretty much put the game away. USC would keep that rather-large lead for the next several minutes, and they were up 73-61 with 5:45 remaining. 

However, the Bears made some noise. Kennedy hit a jumper, and Cone hit a three, as it was now 73-66 with 4:53 remaining. Boogie Ellis then hit a three for USC with 2:37 remaining to make it 76-66, but Celestine hit a jumper, as well as the free throw after he was fouled, and Tyson dunked on. Suddenly it was 76-71 with just two minutes remaining.

Despite the Bears’ valiant efforts, they still ultimately fell short, as the Trojans held on to win it, 82-74.

The Bears fall to 4-10, and are now 0-3 to start Pac-12 play. They will head over to UCLA to play the Bruins Saturday night at 7:00.

Kings defeat Magic 138-135 in double overtime at Golden 1 Center

SACRAMENTO–The Sacramento Kings were back in action on Wednesday night in Sacramento. The Kings were set to play the second night of a back-to-back after playing on Tuesday. The Charlotte Hornets defeated the Kings in the first game of the back-to-back 111-104. The Kings would look to pick up their first win on back-to-back affairs this season. The tip-off was set for 7 PM PST from Golden One Center. The Kings would defeat the Magic on a second night of a back-to-back 138-135.

In the first quarter, the Kings got off to a slow start. Similar to the game against the Hornets, the Kings energy wasn’t present to start the game. Keegan Murray was the exception to this bad start, as he scored ten points in the first quarter. The Magic outscored the Kings in the first quarter 30-27 as they jumped out to the early lead in the game.

In the second quarter, the Kings battled. The Kings got down early in the second but managed to take the lead at the 8:31 mark. The Kings would get a spark from Malik Monk as they pulled ahead. For the rest of the quarter, the Kings continued to push the pace.

The Kings had a big quarter as they outscored the Magic 40-25 to take the lead going into halftime. The Kings would lead the Magic 67-55 at halftime as they looked to bounce back from Tuesday night’s game.

In the third quarter, the Magic came roaring back on the Kings. The Magic outscored the Kings 34-24 in the third quarter to pull within two points of the Kings. The Kings led 91-89 going into the final quarter after a total meltdown in the third.

In the fourth quarter, the Kings were in trouble. The Kings led by 16 at one point in the game and slipped all the way to trailing by three points with 6:17 in the game.

The Kings would need to take much better care of the ball in the final six minutes if they hoped to win the game. The game would go back and fourth but no result after the quarter. Regulation would end tied at 118.

The Kings would end up prevailing in the second overtime quarter by the final of 138-135. The Kings were led by Monk who had 37 points in the game. The Magic received their best performance from Paulo Banchero who scored 43 points.

Up Next: The Kings will stay home to take on the Toronto Raptors on Friday at 7 PM PST.

#1 Jessica, talking about last Saturday’s fiasco in Dallas in the final two minutes of the game that saw Detroit Lions quarterback Jerod Goff throw for a two point conversion that was reversed due to the Lions left tackle Taylor Decker who caught what would have been the game winner was erased because the officials said he didn’t check in. Decker later said in the post game show that he did check in and the Lions lost by a whisker 20-19 after two more conversion attempts after two more penalties were called against the Cowboys the Lions couldn’t convert.

#2 Jessica, As a result of the controversial penalty calls in the last two minutes of the Detroit-Dallas game. The officials working that game last Saturday have been downgraded by the NFL and will not work any of the post season. Most of Brad Allen’s officiating crew who worked the Lions game will not be working the post season.

#3 Carolina Panthers owner David Pepper was fined $300,000 by the NFL for throwing a drink into the stands after Sunday’s 26-0 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Pepper was seated in his private suite when he made the post game toss at Ever Bank Stadium in Jacksonville. Pepper was seated in a private box in the front row when he tossed the drink on a Jaguars fan. The fan got up on the chair to see who threw the drink.

#4 The NFL distributed a video telling NFL players to make it very clear that they have checked in. This is in response to officials saying that the Lions left tackle Taylor Decker did not check in and was called for a penalty and the Lions missed three two point conversion chances following the non check in call for a one point loss. Also players who wear  50-79 or 90-99 must report that they would be eligible to receive a pass.

#5 After the San Francisco 49ers lost to the Baltimore Ravens on Christmas on Monday Night Football and 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy threw for four interceptions Purdy rebounded on New Years eve with a convincing win over the Washington Commanders 27-10. Purdy threw for 22-28 for 230 yards, two touchdown passes and no interceptions. It was quite the turn around for Purdy.

Gushchin and Barracuda power play take down Roadrunners 6-4

SAN JOSE — Danil Gushchin scored his second goal late in the third period on the power play as the San Jose Barracuda defeated the Tucson Roadrunners 6-4 in a wild high scoring game on Wednesday evening at Tech CU Arena.

Cole Cassels set up Gushchin’s heroics with a pass out to Russian forward on the right wing who fired home a one-timer with 2:42 remaining in the third period for his team leading 11th goal of the season to break a 4-4 deadlock.

San Jose has won two of its pasts three games. Tucson had its five-game winning streak snapped.

San Jose (11-14-4-0) drew first blood with an even strength goal early in the first period. Nathan Todd led an odd man rush up the ice. Todd centered a pass over to Kyle Rau whose shot was initially saved by Roadrunners goalie Matthew Villalta, but a trailing Gushchin cleaned up the rebound for first goal of the game, his tenth at the time, at the 4:10 mark.

The Barracuda doubled its lead just past the halfway mark of the opening frame. Leon Gawanke’s wrist shot from the right slot hit off the post and landed in front of the crease. Todd punched the puck in with a backhander for his seventh goal of the season at the 12:18 mark.

“To get a win tonight against those guys (Tucscon) was huge,” said Todd on his team beating the Roadrunners for the first time this season. “We battled hard there. Chrones (Chrona) made some big saves there at the end. We owed them one, so it was nice.”

Tucson (19-9-1-1) cut the ‘Cuda lead in half with a power play goal late in the period. Max Szuber’s shot from the point was redirected past ‘Cuda goalie Magnus Chrona by Austin Poganski for his fourth goal of the season at the 17:44 mark.

San Jose regained its two-goal lead with 48 seconds remaining in the first period. A centering pass from Oskar Lindblom went to Cassels who controlled it first with his skate before depositing the puck into the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season.

However, Tucson answered back on its next shift. A defensive breakdown led to a two-on-one down low for the Roadrunners. Jan Jenik centered a pass over to Josh Doan who was all alone and beat Chrona with a wrist shot for his team leading 13th goal of the season 11 seconds later at the 19:23 mark.

The Roadrunners scored the equalizer with an even strength goal late in the second period. Ben McCartney set up Cameron Crotty at the right point and Crotty blasted a slapshot past Chrona for his first goal of the season at the 18:15 mark.

San Jose regained the lead on the power play to start the third period. Shakir Mukhamadullin’s wrist shot from the point was redirected underneath Villalta by Scott Sabourin for his seventh goal of the season at the 1:00 mark.

Sabourin’s power play goal snapped a four-game power play draught for the ‘Cuda.

Yeah it was huge, it won the game for us (tonight),” said ‘Cuda head coach John McCarthy on their success with the man advantage. “We spent some time (practicing) on it over the week with some different things. Good to see them go in for us tonight. Guys start feeling good about it. Sometimes it’s very streaky, so hopefully we can ride that a little bit.”

Tucson scored the equalizer near the halfway mark of the third period. Victor Soderstrom skated into the ‘Cuda zone and from the left boards beat Chrona with a wrist shot through the five-hole for his seventh goal of the season at the 9:20 mark.

Artem Guryev completed the scoring with an empty net goal, his first of the season with 43 seconds remaining to seal the deal for the ‘Cuda.

Chrona (4-7-2) finished the game stopping 31 of the 35 shots he faced to earn his fourth victory of the season. Villalta made 32 saves on 37 shots in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES: San Jose finished 2-for-4 on the power play. Tucson was 1-for-3.

Cardinal defeat cold-shooting Bruins 59-53

Timely 3-point shooting by Andrej Stojakovic and Kanaan Carlyle in the second half put Stanford ahead, and the Cardinal hung on for a 59-53 Pac-12 men’s basketball win over UCLA Wednesday at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles.

Carlyle made a trey with 14:32 remaining to tie the game at 36-36. Nearly two minutes later, Stojakovic sank a corner 3 to put the Cardinal (7-6 overall, 2-1 Pac-12) ahead 39-36. Carlyle made another 3-pointer at 11:41, giving Stanford a 42-36 lead.

The Bruins (6-8 overall, 1-2 Pac-12) pulled to within three points three times, but got no closer. Spencer Jones sank two free throws with 24 seconds to play, giving the Cardinal their largest lead at 58-47.

Carlyle led Stanford with 17 points, four assists and two steals while making 3 of 5 3-point attempts. Maxime Raynaud grabbed nine rebounds.

Sebastian Mack was UCLA’s top scorer with 14 points, followed by Berke Buyuktuncel with 13 and Adem Bona with 12 points, nine rebounds and three steals. The Bruins led 30-26 at halftime and outrebounded Stanford 36-30.

The Bruins suffered through a horrendous shooting night. After starting the game hitting 8 of 9 from the field, UCLA wound up making 32.8 percent (19 of 58). UCLA had a 17-minute stretch, starting in the first half, where it made only three baskets.

Stanford visits Southern California on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff is at 1 p.m.

A new boxing rule this year, 2024, by the national governing body for amateur/Olympic-style boxing, just codified a rule permitting male participation in the women’s division in its 2024 rule book. The policy is for a biological man who made “changes” and became a woman-transsexual to be able to fight biological women.

Here is the “hook”(to use a boxing term): Male boxers who transition to female are eligible to compete in the female category. These are the conditions. (1) To qualify for the female division, a man must declare his gender identity as female. (2) He must have undergone gender reassignment. (3) Done hormone resting for a minimum of four years after these procedures, and finally, (4) Must have met testosterone limits set by USA Boxing.

Controversial, to say the least, this could revolutionize boxing as we know it. However, not everybody agrees.

Mauricio Sulaiman, President of the WBC, acknowledged that trans athletes, identifying as women, have overwhelming male physical advantages that can overpower and threaten women.“In boxing, a man fighting a woman must never be accepted regardless of gender change,” he said. “There should be no gray area around this, and we want to go into it with transparency and the correct decisions. Woman to man or man to woman transgender change will never be allowed to fight a different gender by birth.”

Biological men who became transsexual are already competing in sports like swimming, whereas trans-athletes as Lia Thomas excel in swimming competitions against biological women; Thomas usually dominates and wins by large margins. But that is swimming, which is not a contact sport, but boxing presents a new dilemma. Because unlike swimming, in boxing, people can get seriously hurt.

The uncharted territory we are in when it comes to this topic it is way above my pay grade, as the saying goes, but it shows that, in this case, the boundaries of humanity are being seriously tested.

Kings lose to Hornets 111-104; Rozier leads Charlotte with 34 pts at Golden 1

SACRAMENTO–The Sacramento Kings were back in action on Tuesday night in Sacramento. The Kings lost a tough one to Charlotte Hornets on Tuesday after returning from a quick road trip. The Kings last played on Sunday in Memphis.

The Kings defeated the Grizzlies to finish the road trip 2-1. On Tuesday, the Hornets came into Golden One Center ready for tip-off at 7 PM PST. The Kings would fall to the Hornets 111-104 in shocking fashion on Tuesday night.

In the first quarter, the Kings played terribly. The Kings offense was off from the jump, and they were really never able to get it going. On the other hand, the Hornets were able to get a bit going towards the end of the quarter as they scored 25 points. The Kings scored 21 points in the quarter.

In the second quarter, the offense came alive a bit, but it still wasn’t up to par. The Kings got their first contributions from De’Aaron Fox in the second quarter, as he scored nine points. The Kings would outscore the Hornets 29-20 in the second quarter to take the lead into the break.

The Kings would lead 50-45 going into halftime. The leading scorer for the Kings was Domantas Sabonis, who had 13 points. Leading scorer for the Hornets in the first half was Terry Rozier, who scored 15 points.

In the third quarter, neither team differentiated themselves much. The Kings and Hornets traded baskets in the third as the Hornets were able to cut the deficit by two points. The Hornets outscored the Kings 30-28. The game would go into the fourth quarter with the Kings leading 78-75.

In the fourth quarter of action, the Kings meltdown materialized in defeat. The Hornets outscored the Kings in the fourth quarter 36-26 to seal the deal and snap their 11 game losing streak. The Kings fans in attendance were stunned in defeat as Las Vegas had the Kings as 15.5 point favorites going into the game.

The Kings could never get a rhythm on the offensive side of the ball all game. The Kings were led in defeat by Fox who scored 30 points in the game. The Hornets snapped their losing streak behind a 34 point performance from Rozier.

Up Next: The Kings will stay home to take on the Orlando Magic on the second night of a back-to-back on Wednesday at 7 PM PST.

Buzzer Beater Finish As San Jose State Loses 75-73 To Wyoming

 The San José State Spartans (7-7, 0-0 Mountain West) battled the Wyoming Cowboys (8-6, 0-0 Mountain West). The Spartans have not played since Dec. 20 when they won 81-78 over Santa Clara. In the victory, the Spartans were led by MJ Amey Jr. and Alvaro Cardenas. Amey Jr. registered 17 points, nine rebounds, five assists, four steals and one block while Cardenas produced a double-double of 14 points and 10 assists. Unlike their win against the Broncos the Spartans were defeated by the Cowboys on Tuesday night by a bucket 75-73.

Game recap: The first half for the Spartans was a high energy and high volume half that ended with them having a hefty lead 47-35. SJSU hit 51% from the field, 50% from the three point line, and 22 rebounds and despite having five turnovers, the Spartans maintained control against Wyoming the whole half.

Cardenas led San Jose State with 12 points, also leading in assists and rebounds by halftime. Wyoming’s biggest flaw was their shooting, only hitting 30% from the field, causing them to try and dig out of a 12 point hole. The Spartans are 5-3 this season when leading at halftime.

San Jose State held the lead the whole half, but the gap was closed by Wyoming as they matched the Spartans on the boards and on the scoreboard. With six minutes left Wyoming tied it up at 66 points a piece.

The remainder of the half was a back and forth where both teams traded baskets and even leads, but the final seconds wound down and Wyoming’s Akuel Kot hit a mid range buzzer beater to win the ballgame for the Cowboys 75-73. 

Now 5-4 when leading at half, but more importantly 7-7 in their overall record, the SJSU Spartans need to string together some wins if they want this season to result in a conference championship or even sniff a chance at it. Being 0-1 after this Wyoming matchup isn’t helpful, but they can bounce back against Boise State back in San Jose at 7:30pm PT on Friday, January 5th.

Warriors hold on to down Magic 121-115; Golden State ends 3 game skid

The Golden State Warriors (16-17) had to work extra hard to beat the Orlando Magic (19-14) Tuesday night at the Chase Center. The Magic, with the best record in the Southeast Division, 19-13, had rebuilt the team via the draft.

The Magic had four players over six feet ten inches tall. Last year’s Rookie of the Year, Paolo Banchero, is a force to be reckoned with. The Warriors assigned Klay Thompson to guard him Tuesday night. It wasn’t easy, but Thompson did the job even though Banchero scored 27 points.

The Warriors had to find a way to stop Moritz and Franz Wagner the young men from Berlin, Germany, were both six-feet ten. The center, Bitadze, measured six feet eleven inches. The Warriors’ tallest players were Kevon Looney and Trayce Jackson-Davis, who were six feet nine inches tall. 

The Warriors had lost three in a row and knew beating the young, tall, and talented Magic squad would be a struggle. The game was a nip-and-tuck affair until late in the fourth quarter. The Magic had an early nine-point lead in. the first quarter.

The Warriors got their game going to finish the first quarter with a two-point advantage, 30-28. The Warrior’s biggest lead in the second quarter was 47-42. The Magic kept coming back. They made a three at the end of the first half to tie the game, 55-55.

Orlando’s big men outrebounded the Warriors 33-25. The Magic had 13 offensive rebounds to help keep them in the game. The Warriors had a rough first half at the free-throw line. The Magic, not a good free-throwing team, made thirteen free throws. The Warriors made seven in 14 threes. 

Stephen Curry and Thompson propelled the Warriors to a six-point lead 87-81 in the third quarter. Curry started to connect from three-point land. Thompson started to make buckets. The one sad note was Gary Payton II appeared to suffer a leg injury. Payton went to the locker room and did not return.

The Magic erased the six-point lead to start the fourth quarter. Thompson, Curry, and Jonathan Kuminga paced the offense for Golden State. Moritz and Franz Wagner made shots to keep the Magic in the game. Curry made a deuce and a trey to give the Warriors the lead, 104-97. Thompson and two buckets by Kunimga had the Warriors leading, 110-101. The Warriors’ defense did the job, and the Warriors were able to win the game 121-115.

Game Notes: With the win, the Warriors snapped a three-game losing streak, and improved to 16-17 for the season. The Magic dropped to 19-14.

All five of the Warrior starters were in double figures. Curry led the team with 36 points and made four threes. Kuminga had 19 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Thompson had 15 points. Thompson made three threes. Chris Paul had 12 points, and he also made three threes. Jackson-Davis, Andrew Wiggins, and Brandin Podzienski each had ten. Wiggins was once again excellent on defense for the Warriors.

Banchero paced the Magic with 27 points, 12 boards, and six assists. Franz Wagner had 25. Bitadze had 13, Moritz Wagner had 12, and Jalen Suggs had ten.

The Warriors cut down on fouls in the second half. The Magic made just six free throws. Turnovers were not an issue for Golden State Tuesday night. The Warriors did a good job, as they committed just 12 turnovers.

The Warriors meet the defending NBA champion Denver Nuggets on Thursday night at the Chase Center. The Warriors will be looking to avenge the loss to the Nuggets on Christmas day in Denver. The game will start at 7 pm.

Losing skid for Sharks extends to nine as they lose close one to Detroit 5-3

SAN JOSE- The Sharks welcomed in an original six rival to SAP Center on Tuesday night for and East vs West matchup.

Heading into this game the Sharks were on an eight-game losing skid with a loss most recently against Colorado.

For the Red Wings Alex Lyon got the start while for the Sharks Kaapo Kahkonen was in between the pipes.

It was a tough start to this one for the Sharks as on the power play Daniel Sprong got his 10th goal of the season from Lucas Raymond and Shayne Gostisbehere.

The Sharks did push back but Lyon stood tall making saves on Anthony Duclair and Henry Thrun.

After a little bit more pushing Mikael Granlund streaked across the slot and ripped one on goal that Lyon saved. Awaiting the rebound was Fabian Zetterlund who wacked the puck home past Lyon tying the game up at one.

There was some extra circulars to kick off the second as both teams got into it. As a result there was some four-on-four action that the Red Wings capitalized on. The recipient of the goal was J.T. Compher who beat Kahkonen with a five-hole shot that he probably would want back.

The Sharks didn’t respond until the dying moments of the second when Mario Ferraro ripped one on goal that Justin Bailey tipped home getting his second goal of the season.

The final frame had plenty of action to talk about as kicking off with a goal from Alexander Barabonov who stepped into the slot and lit the lamp making it 3-2.

A costly penalty by Jan Rutta was converted on by Detroit as David Perron one-timed home his eighth goal of the campaign tying things back up.

With the game down to the wire it looked like things were going to overtime until Perron threw the puck out front and in the right place at the right time was Dylan Larkin. He scored sending a large amount of Detroit fans to their feet and putting the Sharks on the ropes.

San Jose pulled their goalie at 1:03 but they couldn’t tie it as Michael Rasmussen scored to put things away.

With the loss the Sharks record slumps to 9-26-3 while the Red Wings improve to 18-16-4.

The shots at the end of this one favored the Red Wings 31-27.
