Utah Utes 88 (18-11 Overall; 9-9 Pac-12)

The Bears suffered a rare lopsided loss, as they were crushed, 88-59, by the Utah Utes in the penultimate game of the Regular Season.

Cal lost the opener of their season-ending road trip to the Colorado Buffaloes on Wednesday night to guarantee their seventh-straight losing season. However, their hopes for a winning record in Pac-12 play remained alive, as they came into Salt Lake City to take on the Utes.

The Utes struck first, but the Bears kept closely behind in the game’s early minutes. However, Utah seized control of the game early.

Jalen Cone, who led the Bears in scoring tonight with 19 points, hit a three-ball to close Utah’s lead to 23-18 with 9:48 to go in the first half. Just as they had done all season, the Bears fought and kept in the game, but the Utes’ offense proved to be too much, as Utah went into the half up 42-32.

The Bears were once again double double digits going into the second half, which so many times this season meant that they were going to come back.

Jaylon Tyson laid one in to start the second half, followed by a jumper from Branden Carlson of the Utes. Fardaws Aimaq then made a three to make it 44-37, and the Bears were indeed thinking that they were primed for another comeback.

Deivon Smith responded with a layup and a three to extend Utah’s lead to 49-37. The teams traded baskets, and the Utes led, 53-41 with less than 14 minutes to go. Carlson then hit a three to make it 56-41 with 13:06 to go, and from there, the Utes put the game away.

The Bears simply ran out of energy, and the Utes went on to win by a final of 88-59. What also didn’t help, was that Jaylon Tyson, who has carried the Bears for much of the season, was 2-for-11 in field goals, while scoring just seven points.

The Bears fall to 13-17, and 9-10 in conference play, guaranteeing that they won’t have a winning season in Pac-12 play either, which has further dashed Cal’s already-faint March Madness hopes.

Perhaps after a drama-filled bounceback season in which the Bears have had so many big come-from-behind wins, the energy and magic have simply run out.

The Bears will close out the Regular Season Thursday night, when they will head to Palo Alto to take on their archrivals, the Stanford Cardinal.

Sharks Fall 3-2 in a Shootout with the Stars

The San Jose Sharks fell 3-2 in a shootout to the Dallas Stars on Saturday. Stars goals came from Radek Faksa and Jason Robertson. Matt Duchene and Jamie Benn scored in the shootout. Jake Oettinger made 21 saves for the win.

Sharks goals came from William Eklund and Filip Zadina. Anthony Duclair scored in the shootout. Magnus Chrona made 36 saves in the loss. This is the Sharks’ sixth loss in a row, though they did get a point against the top team in the Central Division.

With Mackenzie Blackwood on IR, Chrona is bound to see a few more starts before the end of the season. His last start for the Sharks was on December 28, when he was pulled after giving up four goals in the first period. Saturday, his performance was better, giving up just two goals on 38 shots. After the game, Sharks forward Luke Kunin said, of the young goaltender:

“He was great tonight. Some huge saves for us, really kept us in that game. I thought we had a pretty good game for the most part but those stretches where we were giving up a lot, he was there to back us up. Great performance by him tonight.”

Of the Sharks game outside the net, Sharks Head Coach David Quinn said: “The faceoffs killed us. I think they won almost 70% of their faceoffs. You’re chasing the game a lot when you’re losing that many faceoffs. But I thought overall we played a good hockey game.” The Stars did win 67.2% of the faceoffs.

The Sharks scored first at 4:39 of the first period. William Eklund and Luke Kunin entered the zone two-on-one and Eklund took a shot that Oettinger kicked back out. Eklund was ready to catch the rebound and scored with a quick wrist shot. Assists went to Kunin and Jan Rutta.

The Stars tied it at 3:08 of the second period. Sam Steel deflected Craig Smith’s shot from the boards. The puck trickled through Chrona but still needed an extra push from Radek Faksa to cross the line.

The Sharks took the lead back with a goal at 17:08 of the second. Filip Zadina spun around in the faceoff circle and took his shot. The puck bounced up over Oettinger and hit the post before a Star swept it out of the net. An official review determined that the puck did cross the line. Luke Kunin got an assist.

Fabian Zetterlund blocked a shot with his ankle in the final minutes of the period. He had to be helped off the ice and back to the dressing room.

The Stars tied it again at 4:08 of the third period with a power play goal just 3 seconds into that power play. Jason Robertson took a shot from the top of the faceoff circle, putting the puck into the side of the net. Assists went to Miro Heiskanen and Jamie Benn.

Early in the third period, Nico Sturm returned to the bench with an injury, possibly an elbow or a stick to the neck.

At the end of regulation, the Stars had outshot the Sharks 36 to 20. Dallas took a penalty about half way through overtime but the Sharks could not take advantage of that. The Sharks had three shots in overtime and the Stars had two.

The shootout went to seven rounds. Matt Duchene and Jamie Benn scored for the Stars. Benn scored the winner while falling to the ice after tripping over Chrona’s stick.

Jake Oettinger stopped shots from Filip Zetterlund, William Eklund, Kyle Granlund, Filip Zadina, Mike Hoffman and Luke Kunin. Anthony Duclair scored for the Sharks. Magnus Chrona stopped shots from Jason Robertson, Roope Hintz, Wyatt Johnston, Logan Stankoven and Joe Pavelski.

The Sharks next play on Sunday at 4:00 PM PT in St. Paul, Minnesota, against the Wild.

#1 The San Jose Sharks are on a five game skid. They lost their last game to the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday night 6-4 at SAP Center in San Jose.

#2 Without starting goaltender MacKenzie Blackwood Sharks back up goalie Kaapo Kahkonen was pelted with shots on goals all night long facing 29 and saving 24 in the 6-4 two goal loss to Anaheim.

#3 The Ducks Adam Hentrique had a goal and two assists and Frank Vatrano scored his 27th goal for a team both scored goals to help pace the Ducks.

#4 The Sharks Anthony DuClair scored twice for San Jose, Mike Hoffman and William Ecklund also contributed with a goal each for the Sharks.

#5 The Sharks are in Dallas to open a home at home series which starts Saturday night and picks up on Tuesday night in San Jose. The Stars are no joke one of the toughest teams in the NHL who are in first place in the NHL Central Division at 36-17-9. How much do the Sharks have their hands full starting tonight in Dallas?

Giants agree to $54 million 3 year deal sign third baseman Matt Chapman

The Giants have agreed to a three-year, $54 million contract with free agent third-baseman Matt Chapman, per Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

It’s another signing for the Giants, as well as Giants President of Baseball Operations Farhan Zaidi, who had himself a busy off-season. First came the signing of Korean outfielder, Jung-hoo Lee. Then there was the signing of pitcher Jordan Hicks, and then the signing of Jorge Soler to a three-year deal.

Now, Chapman comes to the Giants, and will be their everyday third-baseman. While Chapman will not provide the Giants with the most efficient bat, he does have power, but most importantly, Chapman, a four-time Gold Glove winner, will provide strong defense at the hot corner.

Chapman will make $20 million this season; $18 million next season; and $16 million in 2026. According to Jeff Passan of ESPN, Chapman will have opt-outs after each of the first years of the deal.

The question is what will happen to JD Davis, whom the Giants acquired from the New York Mets at the Trade Deadline in 2022, and who came into camp expected to be the Giants’ everyday third-baseman.

Davis is off to a fast start this spring, going 4-for-9 with a pair of home runs. Perhaps Davis could be a power bat, who could come off the bench to hit a home run late in the game.

Chapman is the second of the ‘Boras Four’ to be signed. Cody Bellinger was re-signed to a three-year, $80 million deal by the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday. However, starting pitchers, Jordan Montgomery, and 2023 National League Cy Young Award Winner Blake Snell remain on the marker over a week into spring training games.

The Giants could also be in on Snell, who would provide depth to an interesting pitching rotation. Logan Webb enters his third season as the Giants’ ace, and while he heads the rotation, he is joined by Jordan Hicks, who is being converted from a reliever into a starter, as well as young left-handed prospect, Kyle Harrison.

If Hicks and Harrison pan out, the addition of Snell, as well as the potential for Carson Wisenhunt to be called up later this season could suddenly give the Giants one of the strongest rotations in Baseball.

Other Notes:

The Giants beat the Texas Rangers, 11-5, at Scottsdale Stadium to get their first win of the spring. Despite strong offensive performances from the team, the Giants were the lone team without a spring training win coming into today.

Shortstop Brandon Crawford signed with the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday.

Crawford, who had spent all 13 years of his major league career with the Giants, and whose loyalty to the Giants dates back to his childhood in the early 1990s, told Andrew Baggarly, the Giants Beat Writer for The Athletic, that he felt like Zaidi did not want him back, despite his willingness to play multiple positions and be a mentor for prospect, Marco Luciano.

“The bottom line is I was not wanted back by the one person who[se opinion] matters,” Crawford told Baggarly. “So I went with a team that gave me a major-league contract,” implying that the Giants offered him a minor league deal with an invite to Spring Training.

Crawford also said that despite a good clubhouse, the last two years were not fun, and complained about not generally playing more than two games in a row, as well as the lack of communication by Manager Gabe Kapler.

Manager Bob Melvin has brought a new set of rules into the Giants Clubhouse, following the lack of rules and structure from his predecessor, Gabe Kapler.

Those rules include every player, coach and trainer being on the field for the National Anthem to show their opponent that they are ready to play. Melvin is also making his starting position players stay at the ballpark for a period of time after leaving spring training games.

Veterans, including Austin Slater have shown their appreciation of the new rules and structure in the clubhouse, following two years in which a lack of rules and structure led to disappointing seasons.

One last note to add to the end. The Giants also signed shortstop Nick Ahmed to a minor league deal with an invite to Spring Training. Ahmed, who turns 35 years old and has spent the entirety of his 10-year major league career with the Arizona Diamondbacks, seeks to make the team and have a bounceback season with the Giants. He has also expressed his ambition to win the Giants’ every day shortstop job. Ahmed made his debut this afternoon, and went 1-for-3 with a home run.

No Fox? No Problem As Kings Beat First Place Timberwolves In Overtime 124-120

The Sacramento Kings played what was probably one of their best games this year and they did it without De’Aaron Fox. They beat the number one Minnesota Timberwolves 124-120 in an overtime thriller. Malik Monk put on quite a show willing his team to the win with 39 points off the bench.

The Kings won the opening quarter 30-22 and the battle was on with Sacramento looking for a win against the number one team in the Western Conference. The Timberwolves fought back winning the second quarter 37-30 and at the half, the Kings were clinging to a one point lead 60-59. Going forward the clash between these two teams was just beginning and a crazy battle ensued.

Sacramento won the third quarter 31-23 and led in the game 91-82 but this game was hardly a done deal. The fourth quarter was a block-buster as the team traded the lead throughout the entire quarter.

Apparently 48 minutes was not enough to settle this game and when the clock expired at the end of the fourth quarter this game was tied at 115. Five more minutes of play would decide this game.

The overtime was a rough start for the Kings as Domantas Sabonis fouled out with just under four minutes left to play. This would be a huge challenge for Sacramento. This game turned into a crazy physical affair as the two teams battled from the field as well as from the line.

With under 2 1/2 minutes left on the clock this game remained tied 120-120. Monk was having the game of his life with 39 points giving the Kings a 123-120 lead with 52 seconds left in the overtime, less than a minute left in this game.

This game was certainly not one for the faint of heart. The Timberwolves were giving the Kings all sorts of opportunity with turnovers but Sacramento was not cashing in. With 7.4 left on the clock, the Kings were holding onto a 123-120 lead.

Trey Lyles got the biggest rebound of the game with seconds left in play. He was fouled, made one free throw and that was the game 124-120. For the second time this year the Kings came into Minnesota and beat the Timberwolves. Back in November, the Kings also beat the Timberwolves 124-111 on their home court.

This was an amazing win for the Kings closing out the game without Sabonis who fouled out in the overtime and their star player De’Aaron Fox. Talk about a gutsy performance for every Sacramento player on the floor tonight.

The hero in this game was Monk who finished with 39 points. Domantas Sabonis had another double double with 21 points and 15 rebounds. Keegan Murray finished with 17 points and 6 rebounds in this amazing effort.

Sacramento had their hands full trying to contain Rudy Gobert who had 16 rebounds and they did a solid job despite some questionable calls involving Gobert. If there was one down side in this game, it was misses at the line something that needs to be addressed moving forward. They have struggled with this issue all season and they have to correct this. Going forward it could mean all the difference in games.

“I had to get it going at some point. We did it big.,” said Monk after the game. “This was a staple win, this was a team effort. We got 23 games left and we had to come together”, he said. With this performance, Monk certainly made a great case for winning the sixth man award for this season. He was truly amazing.

Game notes: It has been a tough go for the Kings of late getting stomped big time Wednesday night losing to the Denver Nuggets 117-96. They lost to the Heat Monday night and have been dropping in the standings. Friday night they took on the first place Western Conference Timberwolves and got a four point win in Minnesota.

The Kings were really struggling right having to play without De’Aaron Fox is taking it’s toll. He will missed another game Friday night against the Timberwolves with a continued issue, a left knee contusion. The Kings Monk and Sabonis led the way for the win against the Wolves.

The Kings will be off this weekend, earning some desperately needed rest before taking the court after this road trip. Monday they will be back home in Sacramento. They will be facing off against the Chicago Bulls at Golden 1 Center with tipoff scheduled for 7:00 PM.

#1 After the Sacramento Kings defeated the Denver Nuggets in three previous meetings you had to wonder if the Kings would be able to pull it off a fourth time and doing it at Ball Arena in Denver would be a tall order. The Kings got beat by 11 points as the Nuggets prevented losing to them a fourth time.

#2 The Nuggets got scoring help from Jamal Murray who led with 32 points and Nikola Jokic followed up with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

#3 Jokic is rolling he scored his 19th triple double of the season and Murray hit 13 of 15 shots and made five out six 3 pointers.

#4 The Kings did their homework on the Nuggets in the previous three games including their win at Ball Arena on Feb 14th. This fourth game Murray and Jokic kept the Kings off balance all game long.

#5 The Kings turned things around on Friday night at Ball Arena in Denver when they shutdown the Western Conference first place Minnesota Timberwolves 124-120. The Kings Malik Monk led with 39 points and Domantas Sabonis followed up with 21 points. The Kings head back to Golden 1 Arena in Sacramento to host the Chicago Bulls on Mon Mar 4th for a 7:00pm PT tip.

#1 Oakland A’s team president David Kaval said this week that renderings for the A’s Las Vegas ballpark should be ready by Mar 8th and 9th when the A’s play the Milwaukee Brewers at Las Vegas Ballpark.

#2 The two games at the A’s triple A ballpark in Summerlin the opportunity for Kaval to show off the new renderings and answer some daunting questions about when does he think the park will be ready in conjunction with A’s interim plans for 2025-27.

#3 Kaval and the A’s are moving forward with construction plans for the Vegas ballpark but Schools over Stadiums whose in appeal court working on the language for a petition that put an initiative on the Nov 2024 ballot that would stop the public financing for the park.

#4 Daniel out of the 35 acre block at the Tropicana Hotel only nine acres will be devoted to the A’s and the A’s will be limited to the nine acres with a fix roof. Kaval is pushing hard to get the blue prints finalized and says there almost ready.

#5 A’s owner John Fisher is having trouble finding a place for the A’s to play in 2025-27 until the Las Vegas ballpark is ready. Kaval did say that the A’s renderings will be presented at the two Las Vegas pre season games.

If you have never heard of a fan base boycotting their team’s Opening Day, it is because it is not common in Major League Baseball history in Oakland or any other city. But such is the state of affairs on the A’s franchise today. Last Dive Bar and The A’s 68’s have joined forces for a full boycott of Opening Day, March 28 when the A’s host the Cleveland Guardians.

During the 2023 A’s season, there were reverse boycotts, and in the end, the Oakland A’s attendance at the Oakland Coliseum was the lowest among all 30 in major league baseball. Not all of this can be attributed to the boycotts, but A’s hardcore and casual fans have shown disinterest in the team since the team announced their move to Las Vegas.

The relationship between A’s fans and A’s ownership is very similar to part of the Christian marriage vows I, take you to be my favorite team, to have and to hold from this day forward for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer”. Unfortunately, it has resulted in a very nasty divorce, what attorneys call “irreconcilable differences.”

On March 28 at 7:07 PM the Oakland A’s inaugurate their 2024 season when they will play the Cleveland Guardians at the Oakland Coliseum.

Fans plan to boycott the A’s opener by showing up at the Coliseum parking lot but not inside. Instead of going inside the Coliseum to watch the game, fans will show their displeasure with owner John Fisher, who is trying to relocate the team to Las Vegas. The Oakland A’s are offering a BOGO deal for that Opening Night against the Guardians, buy one tixket get another ticket for free.

Warriors Win Eighth Consecutive Road Game Beating Toronto 120-105; Golden State’s Wiggins out with serious personal issues

Despite a slow start, the Golden State Warriors (31-27) won their eighth road game in a row 120-105. They had flight issues flying into Toronto but pulled it all together to beat the Toronto Raptors (23-37). They battled the entire game and came out with the win.

Game recap: Golden State got a very slow start to open this game with some fatigue quite possibly playing into it. They trailed for most of the first quarter but battled back losing the opening quarter 28-31. They had cut the Raptors lead to three and were just getting started. Golden State was able to tie Toronto 33-33 in the second quarter but still trailed at the half 61-64.

The start of the second half was a complete turnaround for the Warriors. They won the third quarter 32-19 and led for the first time at the end of a quarter 93-83.

The Warriors began to set the pace of play dominating the paint and letting Stephen Curry do what he does best and that is knocking down triples.

Jonathan Kuminga was having a stellar game proving that he is now without doubt the number two player on the team. Golden State was one quarter away from winning their eighth road game in a row.

The Warriors continued to dominate in the final quarter with stop after stop. They came into the game on a very quiet note but were finishing the game like gangbusters. The final was 120-105 and they had their eighth win on the road and right now no one is dismissing Golden States hoped for path to the playoffs.

This was an amazing win for the Golden State Warriors especially since they were stuck on the tarmac at JFK Airport in New York waiting to fly into Canada for hours. They really had to pull out all the stops to win this game and they came out with flying colors.

Curry had the high for the Warriors with 25 points and Kuminga was right behind him with 24 points. Moses Moody who started in this game had 17 points and off the bench Chris Paul finished with 13. Klay Thompson also started in this game and shot for 14.

Game notes: The Warriors are on a roll winning their seventh road game in a row Thursday night beating the New York Knicks 110-99. Friday night they took on the 12th place Eastern Conference Raptors and picked up road win number eight. Golden State was without Andrew Wiggins who is out indefinitely once again with a personal matter. The team was also missing Podziemski who was out with right knee soreness. The Warriors had more than enough fire-power to realize number eight.

This win set up the showdown on Sunday when the Warriors take on the first place eastern conference Boston Celtics. This will be a huge challenge for Golden State. Considering the level that they have been playing at this game could very well be a ninth road win in a row for the Warriors. That tipoff is scheduled for 12:30 PM PT televised on ABC TV.

San Jose, CA – Celebrating Black History Month, the San Jose Sharks host their rival the Anaheim Ducks to close out the month of February. Last game on Tuesday the Sharks lost to the New Jersey Devils 7-2. Nico Sturm (1g, 0a) opened the scoring for the Sharks with his fourth goal of the season. The Sharks dropped their fifth straight game losing to Anaheim 6-4 at SAP Center on Thursday night.

He led San Jose in faceoff percentage (64.3%; min. 2 FO). Justin Bailey (1g, 0a) netted his fifth marker on the campaign and now has four points (2g, 2a) in his past five games. Ryan Carpenter (0g, 1a) and Henry Thrun (0g, 1a) were each credited with an assist on Bailey’s goal in the third.

Alexander Barabanov (0g, 1a) was credited with his seventh assist of the year on Sturm’s marker in the first period, giving him double-digit points on the campaign with 10 (3g, 7a).

20 seconds into the first period of the game, Cam Fowler of the Ducks was hit with a puck and bled as he skated off the ice to get stitched up. When the game resumed, the Sharks found their energy early and it was a hot start as Anthony Duclair scored off a slapshot with assists from Fabian Zetterlund and Nikita Okhotiuk, 1-0 Sharks.

Duclair’s 12th goal and Zetterlund’s ninth assist. Zetterlund is having a career year on the offensive end with a career best 15 goals, tying Tomas Hertl for the team lead and Zetterlund now has a career high in points with 24 points after that assist.

Ducks even it up 20 seconds after the Duclair goal thanks to Leo Carlsson poking in the puck, 1-1. A minute after the game tying goal, Alex Killorn of Anaheim earned a tripping call, but that didn’t stop the Ducks from keeping their fire burning.

Short handed goal for Anaheim came from Brett Leason, his eighth of the season, 2-1 Anaheim. The remainder of the period was an exchange of hits and physical play between both teams and when the period ended, Anaheim held the lead 2-1. 

The second period was a collection of penalties and goals. First goal came from Anaheim after Killirn scored on a breakaway that went net to net, 3-1 Ducks. Mike Hoffman scored on what looked like Duclair’s second goal, but it was given to Hoffman for a power play goal after Frank Vatrano earned an interference penalty, 3-2.

The Ducks had another penalty thanks to Mason McTavish’s holding penalty and it resulted in another power play for San Jose and this goal tied it up 3-3. The Ducks responded quickly with a power play goal of their own courtesy of Vatrano, 4-3.

Anaheim got one more goal before the period came to a close and it was another power play goal after a Zetterlund high sticking call. Adam Henrique scored and by intermission it was a 5-3 game, Ducks in the lead. 

The third period was high intensity and very physical. What looked like it was going to be a fight with Eklund and Uhro Vaakananainen were giving penalties that led to a 4 on 4. During the 4 on 4 LaCombe got a tripping call making it 4 on 3 for San Jose and Duclair got his second goal of the game in front of the net assisted by Granlund and Hoffman to make it 5-4. Duclair and Granlund both with three points each. After a Ducks empty netter, the game was officially over 6-4. Anaheim wins.

This game was an impressive game as each goal for Anaheim was scored by a different player. Lundestrom, Henrique, Killorn, Vatrano, Leason, and Carlsson each with a goal in this rivalry game. Next game for the Sharks will hopefully be a different outcome for Coach Quinn as they make a trip to Dallas on March 2nd against the Dallas Stars.
