#1 The San Francisco Giants pitcher Logan Webb had himself an outing on Thursday night here at Oracle Park in San Francisco retiring 19 straight batters. He has his pitches and movement working for him in the Giants 5-0 shutout of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

#2 Webb had five strikeouts and had 13 Diamondbacks grounders and gave up just two hits he had the Diamondbacks off balance.

#3 Webb said the game success was indicative of the team that they are. Webb said that the Giants will grind out at bats and battle to the end. Which they did on Thursday with five runs that were scored with authority.

#4 Troy talk about centerfielder Jung Hoo Lee he’s on a ten game hitting streak, he went two for four on Thursday and nearly legged out an infield ground ball that was flipped by the pitcher to first base to just get him in time.

#5 For Friday night’s docket at Oracle Park starting pitcher for the Diamondbacks Jordan Montgomery (0-0) for San Francisco Blake Snell who has been struggling (0-2 ERA 12.86) first pitch at 7:15pm PDT.

#1 Daniel, you covered the NHL Arizona Coyotes for years and they’re final game was on Wednesday night in a 5-2 in at Mullet Arena in Tempe which was the final and last game for the Coyotes as they will now move to Salt Lake City. It was a heartbreaking scene how foretelling is this when the Oakland A’s finally play their final game at Oakland Coliseum later this season?

#2 Daniel, You take a look at the fans in Arizona they didn’t have plans to do anything as this deal was floated by the NHL and the owner of the Utah Jazz Ryan Smith wasted no time and took the opportunity to purchase and move the Coyotes with little hesitation.

#3 Daniel, in the Coyotes move they did it a week’s time or less with very little warning. Giving Coyotes fans no time to protest, no time for a reverse boycott, and after the game they basically backed up the truck and called it a day. The feeling for the Coyotes fans that their team was relocating was something of a shock and a lot of heartbreak.

#4 The NHL team in Salt Lake City will be called Utah and no nickname has been discussed yet. They’re last team they had was a minor league AHL team called the Golden Eagles. The Eagles name in the AHL is now the Colorado Eagles. This won’t be a problem for the A’s as the A’s will be known as the A’s in Sacramento and Las Vegas.

#5 The shock value is the thing that everybody is talking about in Arizona that this could happen so fast that a team can relocate that quickly with almost little notice. For the Oakland A’s fans, employees, front office, media and even the players there is a percentage of them will not be going to Sacramento with the A’s when they make the trip north. But as opposed to the Coyotes staff and employees the A’s personnel and contractors have this season to get ready for the layoff and move to Sacramento by season’s end.

#1 Jeremiah, the New Orleans Pelicans will be without their leading star player Zion Williamson who suffered a left ham string injury and is expected to be out for the next two weeks.

#2 The Kings who face the Pelicans tonight in New Orleans for the Play In game had two of their key players out last Tuesday against the Golden State Warriors, Kevin Huerter and Malik Monk. Monk said he was impressed by his replace Keon Ellis last Tuesday.

#3 The Pelicans lost Williamson on Tuesday in their play in game against the Los Angeles Lakers losing 110-106 in New Orleans. With Williamson out of the line up how much of leg up does that give the Kings.

#4 Hureter out for the season and Monk out the Kings will be looking for Murray, DeAaron Fox, Harrison Barnes, and Domantas Sabonis to shore up the offense against a potent Pelicans team.

Webb retires 19 straight hitters in Giants shutout over Diamondbacks 5-0 at Oracle Park

SAN FRANCISCO–Returning from an exhausting six day, six game visit to Florida’s two coasts, in which they went a combined 3-3 against the Miami Marlins and Tampa Bay Rays, the San Francisco Giants (9-11) returned to their home on McCovey Cove to face the landlocked Arizona Diamondbacks (9-11) this evening.

Looking at the pitching matchups, it looked like a chance for the home team to finally start playing at a level that the mid-spring training acquisitions of Matt Chapman and Blake Snell seemed to predict. Snell still was rounding himself into shape, but the Giants were sending Logan Webb, the runner up to Snell in last year’s Cy Young voting, against Arizona’s sophomore right hander Ryne Nelson, and his unprepossessing record of 1-2,5.27 complimenting his rookie numbers of 7-8, 5.53.

But a quick glance at the Diamondback’s media notes yields an unsettling bullet point in its summary of Nelson’s ’23 season: “On June 25 @ Giants, tossed a career-high-tying 7.0 innings. . .retired 15 consecutive batters after a first-inning walk to J.D. Davis and was 1 strikeout short of tying his career high of 7 set in his Major League debut.”

Webb, following his one run, six hit win over the Rays five days ago in St. Petersburg, was in fine fettle tonight, retiring 19 Arizonans in a row between two first inning singles and a one out walk in the seventh. In total, he labored seven frames and allowed only those two hits and that walk.

No other Diamondback reached base safely He logged five strikeouts and threw 102 pitches, 66 of them strikes. He earned the win in San Francisco’s thrilling 5-0 triumph in a game that was closer than its final score would indicate. Webb’s performance improved his record to 2-1, 2.93.

Nelson didn’t get a chance to strut his stuff tonight. Mike Yastrzemski lined the Diamondback’s starter’s 27th offering back to the box, where it caroomed off Nelson’s pitching elbow, which suffered a contusion. The injured hurler retrieved the pellet and threw it to first to end the second inning. He didn’t come out for the third in what was at that point a scoreless tie and so wasn’t involved in the decision

Patrick Bailey greeted Logan Allen, Nelson’s replacement, with a double to left. The Giants escaped The Curse of the Leadoff Double when, one out later Lee got his second straight single on a ball hit just past short and into left center field that was scored as another infield hit. LaMonte Wade, Jr’s sacrifice fly to center put San Francisco ahead, 1-0.

That was all the scoring that the orange and black could muster against Allen in his valiant 4-2/3 innings of emergency relief, over which he allowed three hits and a walk before giving way to Bryce Jarvis with two down in the home seventh.

Tyler Rogers pitched a scoreless top of the eighth, helped by a sensational diving catch by Yastrzemski of Gabriel Moreno’s leadoff dying quail to right.

Jarvis had a rough time in the home half of the eighth. Ex Diamondback Ahmed started things with a leadoff double. Lee reached first on an error by second baseman Ketel Marte. Wade walked to load the bases. Soler forced Ahmed out at home on a grounder to short. Manager Torey Lovullo yanked Jarvis and called on Kyle Nelson to stop the Giants’ rally.

He didn’t. Wilmer Flores pinch hit for Conforto and slammed a double to left, which brought in Lee and Wade. Lee’s tally was unearned. Arizona decided to grant Matt Chapman an intentional walk, making the bases FOG, full of Giants, Estrada flew out to right.

Then Yastrzemski came through with a sharp single to right to plate Soler and Austin Slater, pinch running for Flores, and put San Francisco definitively ahead, 5-0. Bailey’s strikeout ended the inning. All the runs but Slater’s were charged to Jarvis.

Ryan Walker needed only 13 pitches to strike out the three Diamondbacks he faced in the t0p of the ninth to nail down the victory. Jung Hoo Lee’s two singles extended his hitting streak to 10 games.

Arizona’s Jordan Montgomery will make his first appearance of the season Friday, evening at 7:15. Blake Snell (0-1, 12.86) we’ll see if he’s gotten into shape when he takes the mound for the Giants.

Sharks Lose Last Game of Season 5-1 to Flames

The San Jose Sharks lost their final game of the season 5-1 to the Calgary Flames on Thursday. Adam Klapka, Blake Coleman, Oliver Kylington, Kevin Rooney and Mackenzie Weegar scored for the Flames. Dustin Wolf made 16 saves in the win. Fabian Zetterlund scored the lone Sharks goal. Devin Cooley made 18 saves for the Sharks before being pulled. Georgi Romanov made 14 saves in relief. The Sharks finished the season with a record of 19-55-9.

Mikael Granlund finished the season on a 13 game point streak. The game was also noteworthy for being the first to see two Bay Area born goaltenders start in an NHL game. After the game, Devin Cooley said, of playing against Wolf:

“I don’t know him personally, but I’ve been following him for a while, obviously, in the American League. He’s had a great career so far and it’s really awesome to see how far youth hockey has come in Northern California and in the Bay Area. It was really cool to be able to play against him tonight and I hope we continue to see more guys from the Bay Area make the NHL.”

Fabian Zetterlund played his 82nd game of the season, the only Shark to do so this season. Of this accomplishment, Zetterlund said: “I mean, obviously that’s nice, you know, I feel fresh every game. I try to stay in shape, ready to go every night. That was my goal before the season and, yeah, I made it.”

Sharks Head Coach David Quinn said, of the season’s final games:

“We’ve made a lot of changes, there’s a lot of new faces here. It’s tough to learn on the go, in a short period of time, what’s expected of you. You know, it’s just hard. But we’re not the only team that’s gone through it. As I’ve said repeatedly, we’re in a situation where we kind of understood that this was going to be a difficult year but we will be better for it moving forward.”

All of the Flames goals came in the first two periods, not unlike the Sharks loss on Monday. Adam Klapka scored his first NHL goal at 12:13 of the first period. His wrist shot through traffic gave Calgary the lead.

Blake Coleman made it 2-0, redirecting a shot from Connor Zary. The goal came at 14:40, just as a Flames power play expired. Assists went to Zary and Rasmus Andersson.

The Sharks were outshot 16-5 in the first period. Early in the second period, Givani Smith and Adam Klapka squared off for a fight. Klapka lost his balance in the fight and both retired to the penalty box.

Oliver Kylington made it 3-0 about a minute after the fight. Andrew Mangiapane acted as a screen for Kylington’s shot from above the faceoff circle. An assist went to Andrei Kuzmenko.

Kevin Rooney made it 4-0 at 5:59. His shot from the slot went through several Sharks defenders and into the far side of the net. Assists went to Martin Pospisil and Matt Coronato.

MacKenzie Weegar scored the Flames’ fifth goal of the night at 6:56, for a total of three goals scored in 3:03 of play. It was another shot through traffic that went by Cooley on the glove side. Assists went to Daniil Miromanov and Blake Coleman.

The Sharks pulled Cooley after that goal and put Georgi Romanov in net. Romanov stopped all the shots he faced for the remained of the game. The Sharks were outshot 13-6 in the second period and 8-6 in the third.

Fabian Zetterlund scored a power play goal in the final ten seconds of the game. He scored his 24th goal of the season with a wrist shot from the faceoff circle. Assists went to Mikael Granlund and Collin Graf.

#1 San Francisco Giants pitcher rookie Keaton Winn went six innings and gave up just a run, gave up four hits and struck four batters and it stood up as the Giants wound up defeating the Miami Marlins at Loan Depot Park 3-1 on a Wednesday matinee.

#2 The Giants got hitting help from Thairo Estrada who got two hits and ended up scoring the go ahead run in the top of the seventh inning. Estrada can be clutch at times and he was the key player on Wednesday.

#3 Estrada has some speed too he had to race home when Nick Ahmed hit into a double play against Marlins pitcher DeClan Cronin.

#4 Winn who picked up his first win at 1-3 said that it was nice to get the monkey off his back and wasn’t trying to think of it and the win just came.

#5 The Giants return back to San Francisco tonight here at Oracle Park as they open a four game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Diamondbacks are just ahead of the fourth Giants in third place and like the Giants are playing .500 ball winning five of their last ten games. Starter for Arizona Ryne Nelson (1-2 ERA 5.27) and for San Francisco Logan Webb (1-0 ERA 3.80) first pitch under the lights at Oracle Park 6:45pm PDT.

Oakland A’s outfielder found himself demoted in the minor leagues after the first week of the season even though he was hitting above .400. Here he’s wearing a Last Dive Bar wrist band who are promoting that A’s owner John Fisher should sell the team. The Last Dive Bar has indicated that the A’s were offended by Ruiz wearing the wristband and that was the real reason he was demoted. On the Oakland A’s podcast with Jerry F:

#1 Jerry, when the Oakland A’s demoted outfielder Esteury Ruiz to triple A affiliate Las Vegas. At the time of the demotion Ruiz was hitting over .400 and last season led the A’s and American League in stolen bases. So the demotion had people scratching their head.

#2 Without complaining Ruiz took the demotion and in one of his at bats slugged a ball that hit the back of the bleachers at Las Vegas ball park. Ruiz cannot be denied and his production strong was promoted back to the big club Wednesday.

#3 The Last Dive Bar an A’s fan club who had been involved in the Summer of Sell, boycotts and reverse boycotts drives with the Oakland 68s had Last Dive Bar wristbands with their name on it and Ruiz and teammate Brent Rooker had been photographed with the wristbands on. Hence Rooker has not played much this season and is on the 10 day IL and has been hitting and Ruiz was sent down shortly after the photos were made public.

#4 All is forgiven now as Ruiz who the A’s brass can’t deny is back in the show and was in the line up yesterday slugged a two run home run which was key in the A’s win over the visiting St Louis Cardinals at the Coliseum.

#5 The A’s open a three game series to open their road trip on Friday night in Cleveland. For the A’s Joe Boyle (1-2 ERA 6.23) he’ll be opposed by the Cleveland Guardians Tristen McKenzie (1-2 ERA 6.23) first pitch 4:10pm PDT.

Look who’s back: Ruiz returns belts homer A’s beat Cardinals 6-3

OAKLAND–The A’s beat the visiting St. Louis Cardinals 6-3 on getaway day. The A’s sent Paul Blackburn to the hill Wednesday afternoon. Blackburn had not allowed a run in 19 and 1/3rd innings to start the season. Blackburn added three more innings to his record, holding the Cardinals scoreless for the first three innings.

The Cardinals plated three runs in the fourth to snap his streak. The A’s rallied in the fifth to regain the lead. The A’s bullpen did not allow a hit or a walk after taking over for Blackburn with two out in the sixth. The A’s won the game 6-3.

The A’s drew first blood in the bottom of the third. The Cardinals’ starter, lefty Steven Matz, walked rookie Max Schuemann to start the inning. A’s centerfielder, Esteury Ruiz, lined a shot over the left field wall to give the A’s an early 2-0 lead. It was Ruiz’s second big fly of the young season.

The Cardinal offense ignited in the top of the fourth, setting the stage for an exciting comeback. Lars Nootbaar led the charge with a single, followed by a single from Nolan Arenado, sending Nootbar to third. Cardinals’ DH Willson Contreras doubled, driving in Nootbar, and Arenado stopped at third. Blackburn struck out Nolan Gorman for the first out. Catcher Ivan Herrera added a single to drive in Arenado and Contreras to the excitement. The Cardinals surged ahead, leading 3-2 midway through the third inning.

The A’s demonstrated their resilience and strategic play in the bottom of the fifth, reclaiming the lead. Singles by Tyler Nevin and Zack Gelof set the stage, putting men on first and second with no outs. A’s catcher Shea Langeliers showcased his strategic thinking with a ground-rule double to drive in Nevin. Gelof would have scored, but the ball got stuck under the wall in center field.

Gelof had to go back to third. Abraham Toro’s ground out allowed Gelof to score, and Langeliers scored on a sacrifice fly, solidifying the A’s lead at 5-3 in favor of Oakland.

The A’s added another run in the bottom of the sixth. With two out, Ruiz reached on a fielder’s choice and stole second. A’s right fielder Tyler Nevin singled to drive in Ruiz with the sixth run of the game. The A’s led 6-3 after six.

The A’s bullpen did not allow a hit after starter Paul Blackburn exited in the sixth inning. The A’s win 6-3.

“The job our bullpen did again today [is] a reflection of the season so far,” said Manager Mark Kotsay. “Overall, [it] was a really solid day for our pitching staff.”

Game notes: With the win, the A’s are 8-11. The A’s are 7-4 after a 1-7 start. The Cardinals fall to 9-10.

Paul Blackburn was the winning pitcher. He is now 2-0 for the year. His line was five and 2/3rds innings, allowing three runs and six hits. Cardinals starter Steven Matz was the losing pitcher. His record is 1-1.

“It was kinda one of those days where [I] didn’t really have anything, I felt like,” said Blackburn. “[However], I kept the boys in it, the offense came through, and we were able to get a win. Anytime you get a win, it’s a good outing.”

“Overall, he managed the game as Paul does,” said Kotsay. “Ultimately, he gave us a chance to win, like he’s done all season. He grinded it in that last inning to get through it.”

The Line score for Oakland was six runs, ten hits, and no errors. The Line score for St. Louis was three runs, six hits, and no errors.

Oakland’s hitting stars were Ruiz, Nevin, and Langeliers. Ruiz blasted a 412-foot home run in the third to give the A’s a 2-0 lead. Nevin had a double and two singles. Langeliers’ double helped the A’s score three runs in the fifth.

The A’s used four relievers: T.J. McFarland, Austin Adams, Lucas Erceg, and Mason Miller. Miller earned his fourth save of the season.

The time of the game was two hours and 30 minutes, and 9,551 fans watched the Green and Gold pick up their eighth win.

“We’re playing great baseball right now,” said Blackburn. “The energy has been I think at [an] all-time high right now for us. It’s not just coming from guys [playing every day]. It’s coming guys that are on the bench…..it’s coming from everyone. It’s definitely a group effort right now, and it shows. The come-from-behind wins that we’ve had this year, it gives us a lot of confidence moving forward. [When] we do get down, it’s not like we don’t have a chance. We’re fighting out every at-bat, we’ve thrown the ball well, we[‘ve] hit the ball well and [we’ve played] good defense. We’re playing some really good baseball right now.” 

“I haven’t been here too long, but [there] doesn’t seem to be any egos,” said Nevin. 

The A’s are off on Thursday as they are on their way to play the Cleveland Guardians in Cleveland for three games starting Friday night. Joe Boyle (1-2, 5.68) will pitch for Oakland. Triston, McKemzie (1-2, 6.23) will be on the mound for Cleveland. The game will start at 4:10 pm.
