STANFORD, Calif. — The Stanford Cardinal (11-5, 3-2 ACC) beat the Virginia Cavaliers (8-8, 1-4 ACC) 88-65, and swept the two conference schools from the state known as the “Mother of Presidents” over a three-day period inside Maples Pavilion.

Stanford got off to a TREEmendous start to the game. They hit two three pointers before their Atlantic Coast visitors knew what happened. Freshman forward Donavin Young and junior guard Oziyah Sellers both confidently stroked consecutive Threes immediately after tip off.

Virginia was not cavalier in their attempt to compete with the Cardinal. They performed a 6-0 run and led by as much as three points. There were eight lead changes and two ties during the first 20 minutes of gameplay.

However, the Cardinal responded with another 6-0 run and led as many as 10 points by intermission, and kept the lead for good. That was the halftime margin, due to a runnin 3-pointer at the buzzer by senior guard Jaylen Blakes.

At the half, Stanford maintained a double-digit advantage, 40-30. Maxime Raynaud led both teams with 10 points and 5 rebounds, while junior guard Isaac McKneely paced the Cavs with 9 points.

The Cardinal partially duplicated the beginning of the game, as they did the second Stanza. Sellers opened the final half two with a three to put them up by 13 points. They did not hit two in a row, as they did in the first, but held on to a significant lead throughout the second 20-minute block.

Stanford increased that 13-point lead to as high as 23, but the Cavaliers continued to battle back. They actually got the deficit as low as nine points momentarily, by way of a 7-0 run. Stanford trumped that with a 10-0 run of their own.

After the Cardinal withstood their guest’s best punches, they cruised through the last minutes of the contest to a 23-point victory, 88-65. Stanford is undefeated at home in ACC play, and 3-0 in the Bay Area, including the conference opener at Berkeley against Cal.

Raynaud led all players with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Sellers contributed 15 points, while Blakes added 10 points to the Cardinal’s cause.

McKneely topped Virgina with 22 points and Jacob Cofie tallied 11 points and 5 rebounds.

The Cardinal will next be in action Wednesday, January 11, as they travel to North Carolina to take on Wake Forest at 6:30 ET on ESPNEWS. Virginia heads back to Charlottesville to host SMU on the same date at 9:00 PM ET on the ACC Network.

Cal Women To Be Pushed By Florida State, Nation’s Leading Scorer, Ta’Niya Latson

By Morris Phillips

BERKELEY, CA–Brooke Wyckoff’s Seminoles have never been to Berkeley. This season, they’ve yet to face a ranked opponent and No. 24 Cal is up next. And they’re coming off a frustrating loss at Stanford in which they scored 84 points, and lost in regulation.

When you’re 13-3 with big goals, you crawl back to the hotel, recharge, and spend little time waxing poetically about your beautiful January weekend in Northern California.

“What it takes is a standard of excellence on both ends of the floor,” Wyckoff said immediately, in reflecting on the trip so far, including a loss at Stanford that was simply not what she wants from her experienced, talented team.

The host Cardinal came in a mess, and left blessed. Losers of five of their last six, Stanford pushed the pace, and made shots. They also dominated the glass, and never trailed after 9-8 early in the first period. Wyckoff demanded her team assess themselves, individually and collectively, and take responsibility for their performance in the 89-84 loss.

“We need better defense, no uncontested threes,” she said. “We scored 84 points, which is less than what we normally score, but enough to win a basketball game.”

Ta’Niya Latson, the nation’s leading scorer at 27.7 ppg, put up 24 but wasn’t on her game. Two games ago, she scored 40, and she’s exceeded 24 on ten other occasions. But against Stanford, she needed 22 shots to reach that 24, and defensively, she got caught on a couple of instances outside of reach of Stanford shooters.

Latson’s response to a subpar game could be Cal’s biggest concern. The junior guard is rarely out of pocket and produces big numbers effortlessly and seemingly from muscle memory. Cal will dial up several different defenses, but Latson’s unlikely to be phased.

“It’s the natural growth as a player, from day one she’s seen every type of coverage thrown at her,” Wyckoff said of Latson. “She’s more comfortable now than ever.”

Latson’s body maturity after a couple of seasons in a university-style gym is noticeable. At 5’8″, she’s exceptionally smooth, and now, with the increased muscle, far less likely to be impeded in the paint, even by defenders that are five or six inches taller.

Cal will counter with their uncanny shooting prowess that ranks them 12th nationally in made threes per game at 10.1. They shoot 46 percent from the floor, which ranks 37th. At Haas Pavilion, the Golden Bears are 10-0 and their crowds are building as their 15-2 won-loss record gains notice.

Wyckoff, a year removed from a cancer diagnosis, and an intense regime with chemotherapy, is again enjoying the process, and the intense competition within the ACC that coaches crave.

“You’re preparing for opponents, you’re playing games,” Wyckoff said, in comparing her coaching career to a form of therapy.

“(Having that distraction) was a huge blessing. And an amazing staff supported me through it,” she said about last season before declaring that her chemo treatments have ended for now.

Sharks Fall 2-1 to Utah, Close Not Good Enough

The San Jose Sharks fell 2-1 to the Utah Hockey Club on Friday. Nick Schaltz and Barrett Hayton scored for Utah and Karel Vejmelka made 18 saves for the win. Fabian Zetterlund scored for the Sharks and Alexandar Georgiev made 23 saves in the loss.

Although the game was close, it was disappointing for the Sharks. “It wasn’t good enough tonight. Puck play was awful. It just wasn’t enough,” said Sharks Head Coach Ryan Warsofsky. Mikael Granlund said: “We weren’t really good with the puck. Didn’t really get anything going on offensively all night so… they defended well but we got to be better with the puck, we got to win some battles and sustain some o-zone time.”

Perhaps the only bright spot was that Sharks goalie Georgiev played well. Granlund said, of the goaltender: “He was great tonight. He gave us a chance to win this game and we were in it. So, too bad we couldn’t get it done.”

The first goal of the game came just 58 seconds in. Mikael Granlund took a shot from the face off circle. Vejmelka stopped that but Fabian Zetterlund jumped on the rebound and put it in the net. Assists went to Granlund and Cody Ceci.

Utah outshot the Sharks 10-8 in the first period. The Sharks took the only penalty of the period.

Nick Schmaltz tied the game at 5:57 of the second period. He skated with the puck most of the way around the Sharks’ zone before taking his shot from inside the faceoff circle. Assists went to Clayton Keller and Nick DeSimone.

The Sharks only had three shots on goal in the second period while Utah had six. Utah took the single penalty called in the second period. The Sharks got their first shot of the third period at the nine minute mark, by which time Utah had two shots.

At 3:22 of the third period, Keller put the puck in the net but the goal was called back after Warsofsky challenged it for goaltender interference. Schmaltz skated into the blue paint and bumped Georgiev from behind.

Barrett Hayton scored the tie-breaking game winner with just 32 seconds left in regulation. He took a snap shot while skating across the top of the faceoff circle. Assists went to Nick Bjugstad and Olli Maatta.

With just five seconds left in the game, William Eklund took a high stick to the face and earned the Sharks a four minute power play. That was the only penalty called in the third. By the end of the period, The Sharks had eight shots on goal and Utah had nine.

The Sharks next play on Saturday at 7:00 PM PT in San Jose against the visiting Minnesota Wild.

Poturalski’s two goals pace the Barracuda in 5-2 win over Condors

San Jose Barracuda center Andrew Poturalski (#22) celebrates his second goal against the Bakersfield Condors with teammate Justin Bailey (#90) during the Barracuda’s 4-2 win at Tech CU Arena on Friday JAN 10, 2024. (San Jose Barracuda)

by Marko Ukalovic

SAN JOSE — Andrew Poturalski continued his stellar offensive season for Team Teal.

The San Jose Barracuda captain scored two goals during a three-goal second period as the ‘Cuda defeated the Bakersfield Condors 5-2 on Friday evening at Tech CU Arna.

San Jose has won two games in a row and three of its last four games as they went 2-1 during their three-game homestand. Bakersfield has lost two games in a row and three of its past five.

Bakersfield (13-13-3-1-30 points) drew first blood 36 seconds into the game as they pressured San Jose inside its own zone from the opening faceoff. Ronnie Attard found Phil Kemp along the right boards. The Condors defenseman beat ‘Cuda goalie Georgi Romanov a seeing eyed wrist shot up high over the glove for his fifth goal of the season.

San Jose (20-11-0-2-42 points) answered back with an even strength goal less than three minutes later. Tristen Robins centered a pass from behind Bakerfield’s net out to Justin Bailey who fanned partially on his shot. The puck deflected off of Connor Carrick’s stick out to Robins who buried a wrist shot past Condor’s goalie Collin Delia for his fifth goal of the season at the 3:25 mark. Poturalski picked up the secondary assist on the play.

San Jose’s number one-line struck again as Poturalski gave the Barracuda its first lead of the game with his first goal of the contest early in the second period. Thomas Bordeleau made a cross ice to pass over to Bailey inside the Condor’s zone. Bailey made a touch pass over to Poturalski and the veteran forward tapped home the puck into an empty net for his 14th goal of the season at the 2:17 mark. It was the first time San Jose had a lead against Bakersfield this season.

Then Poturalski took advantage of a fortunate bounce while the Barracuda were on the power play with the team’s third unanswered goal. A backhanded clearing attempt by the Condors pinballed off of three players into the middle of the ice where Poturalski was all alone and beat Delia top shelf with a wrist shot for his second of the game and team leading 15th goal of the season at the 6:07 mark.

Poturalski also scored his team leading seventh power play goal as he was involved in the ‘Cuda’s first three goals.

San Jose scored its third goal of the middle frame with under six minutes remaining. Jake Furlong intercepted a pass from the point inside his own zone. Furlong fluttered a home run pass up the ice that sprung Donovan Houle on a breakaway. Houle skated in and beat Delia with a wrist shot top shelf to the right corner of the net for his eighth goal of the season at the 14:36 mark.

Houle has scored in back-to-back games and have three goals in his last four games.

Bakersfield cut San Jose’s lead in half with a four-on-four goal late in the period. Cam Dineen skated around the ‘Cuda defense before he centered a pass from behind the net over to Noah Philp who beat Romanov with a one-timer for his ninth goal of the season at the 18:09 mark.

The third period featured an abundance of physicality and chippy-ness with extra-curricular activities that occurred after the whistle between both teams. Jacob Perreault was given a five-minute major for spearing with an automatic ejection from the game from the game at the 14:42 mark.

Houle completed the scoring with his second goal of the goal, a power play goal, when he scored an empty netter when the Condors pulled Delia for an extra attacker at the 15:43 mark. Robins and Ethan Cardwell picked up helpers on the play. It was Cardwell’s 19th assist on the season.

Romanov (9-5-1) stopped 23 of the 25 shots he faced to earn his ninth win of the season and has won a season best three games in a row. Delia (3-6-2) made 40 saves on 44 shots in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES: San Jose finished 2-for-3 on the power play. Bakersfield went 0-for-2.

The Three Stars of the Game: 1) Poturalski (2G, A) 2) Houle (2G, 0A) 3) Bailey (0G, 2A).

Poturalski and goalie Yaroslav Askarov were selected to the 2025 AHL All-Star game which will be held on Monday February 3rd at Acrisure Arena in Palm Desert, Calif. It will be Poturalski’s third all-star game and Askarov’s first.

Bailey played in his 400th AHL game of his career.

San Jose is 1-2 against Bakersfield in the season series.

UP NEXT: San Jose and Bakersfield conclude their home-and-home series on Saturday 1/11 at 7:00pm at Mechanics Bank Arena.

Kings Pull Major UpSet Over Celtics 114-97 – Winning Their Sixth Game in a Row

Boston Celtics Jaylen Brown (7) drives on the Sacramento Kings Keegan Murray (11) in first half action at TD Garden in Boston on Fri Jan 10, 2025 (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

In one memorable game, the Sacramento Kings (19-19) pulled off a crazy upset over the Boston Celtics (27-11) and they did it without De’Aaron Fox by the score of 114-97. DeMar DeRozan had the high for the Kings with 24 points and Domantas Sabonis had 23 points and 28 rebounds , a career high (that is not a misprint) in his most amazing double double of the year. Mllak Monk finished with 22 points and Keegan Murray had a sensational game with 19 points. They now extend their win streak to six in a row.

Game recap: Sacramento got a great start in the opening 12 minutes of play leading after one quarter 34-27. The Celtics got a bit of a slow start but made up for it winning the second quarter 28-19 and leading at the half 55-53 in a very close first half.

The third quarter was as close as it could be and this game was looking as if it would go down to the wire. Sacramento edged Boston in the third 23-21 and this game was all tied up going into the fourth quarter 76-76. The Kings were keeping up with the Celtics shot for shot and it would all come down to the final 12 minutes.

It all fell apart in the fourth quarter for Boston. The Kings dominated the glass, the paint and finished the game with 18 shots from downtown. They shot 43% from the field to the Celtics 40%. They had 12 turnovers to Bostons 15.

They out-rebounded Boston 56 to 43 and shots from beyond the arc were impressive 38% to Boston’s 26%. The Kings dominated at every turn against a full strength Boston playing a flawless fourth quarter outscoring the Celtics 38-21 for a final of 114-97 in a major upset winning their sixth game in a row.

The Kings came in as underdogs and came out victorious. Sabonis had an amazing game finishing with 23 points and a career high 28 rebounds. This was his 33rd double double this season. Coming into this game the NBA’s previous high for rebounds this season was 23 by Victor Wembanyama and Sabonis shattered that.

DeRozan had the game high with 24 points and nine assists. Monk finished with 22 points and eight assists. Murray really stepped up in this game adding 19 points.

The high for the Celtics was Jaylen Brown with 28 points. Jayson Tatum was quiet in this game with 15 but had 12 rebounds. He struggled with protecting the ball committing eight turnovers. In a game that was tied at 76 after three quarters, it was Sacramento not the Celtics that took command going on a 24-9 run to open the fourth quarter.

The Kings had yet another strong game outscoring Boston 48-40 in the paint and also had a sizeable rebound edge. Sacramento had outhustled the Celtics all night and really turned it all around in the fourth quarter doing it all without Fox who missed his third game with injury.

Game notes: Friday night the Kings traveled to Boston for a matchup with the Celtics. This was the Kings biggest challenge taking on the number two Celtics in the Eastern Conference and pulling it off with a lopsided fourth quarter outscoring the Celtics 38-21.

The Kings now on a six game win streak Friday night and the sixth win was monumental. Fox was not on the floor still struggling with a right glute contusion while the Celtics were almost at full strength. They have not beaten the Celtics in three years and with the win the Kings extend their win streak to six.

The Sacramento Kings take a lot of confidence into Chicago where they will take on the Bulls Sunday looking for win number seven. Tipoff for that game is scheduled for 12:30 PM. There is hope that De’Aaron Fox can play on Sunday. He was questionable for Friday night’s game and with a few more days of rest perhaps he will be able to take the floor.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: A’s 2025 – Sacramento Twice as Hispanic as Oakland

A’s 2025: Sacramento Twice as Hispanic as Oakland

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

Recent data shows Sacramento’s Hispanic population grew by 22 percent during the past two years. Approximately 378,000 Hispanics live in Sacramento; one of four in the State’s Capital are Hispanics. The area surrounding Sacramento is also rich in Hispanic culture.

In Stockton (just 48 miles from Sacramento), 43.13% of the total population is Hispanic, or about 150,000 people. Between these two historic cities, there are over 528,000 Hispanics.

A recent Census showed that Oakland lists 141,623 Hispanics. Hispanics are over-represented in the Sacramento, California area’s farming, fishing, and forestry industries; Stanislaus County, in particular, has a family farm that grows traditional Mexican food staples.

California leads the way, followed by Texas and Florida, with the largest Hispanic populations in the United States. These states have a significant impact on the nation’s demographics. As of July 1, 2023, the Hispanic population in the United States was 65.3 million, 19.5%.

This makes Hispanics the most significant racial or ethnic minority in the country. México is the only country in the world with more Spanish-speaking people than the United States of America.

According to Forbes, the Hispanic media market in the United States is large and growing, with a high rate of digital video penetration. Hispanics are the largest minority group in the US, and their buying power is in the trillions of dollars.

This past season, 2025 (the last one for the A’s at Oakland), a young bilingual family was given a tour of the Press Box at the Coliseum. One of the people visiting our A’s Spanish Broadcast booth noticed a decal on the door that read KIQI 1010AM San Francisco/ KATD 990AM Sacramento and said something to the fact, “You guys are ready for Sacramento, I see.”

Not really; these Multicultural Radio stations have been the Spanish radio station(s)for the Oakland A’s for years; they did not make this decal because they announced they were moving to Sacramento. I thought this was a good story since the KATD signal in Sacramento is intense and covers the Sacramento Valley and beyond, while the KIQI signal is based in San Francisco and covers the Bay Area.

In this social media world of Sports, Spanish is heard not only on AM/FM radio but anywhere on the internet; most network shows on television are also available via SAP.

SAP on television stands for “Secondary Audio Programming,” which refers to an additional audio track that can be broadcast alongside the primary audio, often used for alternative language options. Many professional sports teams in MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL, and other leagues take advantage of the SAP Channel, offering Spanish-speaking fans a way to listen in Spanish while they watch the game live.

Many Hispanics are proficient in both English and Spanish. However, Hispanics in the US often prefer to listen to shows in Spanish because it connects them deeply to their culture and heritage, providing a sense of identity and allowing them to engage with content that accurately reflects their lived experiences, including language nuances and cultural references that might be lost in translation to English, for many, Spanish is a way to stay connected to their family origin and traditions, even if they are fluent in English as well.

An Oakland A’s baseball player of the past, non-Hispanic, told me that when they were on the road and when the game was at night, he loved to listen to the Spanish-speaking soap operas in the mornings at the hotel room; he told me he learned some Spanish by doing that.

This past October 12, 2024, yours truly and Carlos Ramírez of COMCAST called the game on Los Tiburones Night in San José via the SAP NBCSCA plus @SharksAudioNet in Spanish. I have participated in this one-game production for the San José Sharks for six years, always on Hispanic Night with the Sharks.

This production has always been professional. The Sharks have shown leadership on this special night. I have received great responses from people who follow the Sharks. Some wanted the schedule for more games in Spanish. And yes, Goal still Gooooooool en Español.
