San Jose State win 6th straight against Air Force 75-64

SAN JOSE- Coming into today, San Jose State is coming off of a 71-68 loss against the San Diego State Aztecs. Previous to today’s matchup, San Jose State has won the last 5 games between these two teams.

After the first half, San Jose State went into the locker room up 37-25. Key components were making nearly all their three’s, only missing two, going 7-10. Team highs were Latrell Davis in points (12), and Robert Vaihola in rebounds (4), and assists (3). Both defense and offense put on a show with the Spartans blocking 6 shots and making 70% of their threes.

The only aspects that Air Force dominated in during the first half was free throws and 2nd chance points. Air Force made 75% of their FT’s compared to San Jose State’s 25% and had thirteen 2ndChPts compared to San Jose State’s zero. The 13 2ndChPts went hand in hand with Air Force being in the paint outscoring the Spartans 12-8.

San Jose ended with a strong second half, they went from 25% to 58% from the free throw line. “I think we got our most engaged and quickest guys defensively. It was good for us” said HC Tim Miles. Robert Vaihola put up 8 rebounds, a career-high. After being smashed in the paint, San Jose State came back and tied the Air Force 26-26 in the paint.

Latrell Davis only missed one shot in the whole game going 7-8. “I’m working with the coaches, working with management, just getting shots up before and after practice” said Latrell Davis.

The Spartans will be back in action on Tuesday February 4th traveling to take on the Fresno State Bulldogs. This will be the first matchup between these two teams this season. HC Tim Miles is winless against Fresno, adding three Fresno transfers this season. “I think we owe it to them to go out and give it our best and we owe it to our rivalry.”

#1 Brandon Montour scored two of four of the Seattle Kraken second period goals and the Kraken picked up a convincing victory over the San Jose Sharks 6-2 at Climate Pledge Arena on Thursday night.

#2 For the Sharks Carl Grundstrom and Tyler Toffoli each scored and they were all the scoring that the Sharks would get all evening.

#3 The loss for the Sharks is their sixth in their last seven games. When you look at the loses piling up how much pressure how much work and how many drills during morning skates will head coach Ryan Warsofsky have to push to get the club in the win column.

#4 There was no doubt that when the Sharks dropped the puck against the Kraken they came into a buzz saw as the Kraken have now won 12 out of their last 13 games with at least four goals per game.

#5 The Sharks will try it all over again on Tuesday night against the Montreal Canadiens. The Habs have struggled they have lost four in a row and have not won in six of their last ten games. This could be the Sharks best chance to get back in the win column. The Sharks have lost eight of their last ten games.

Utah HC Surrenders 2-0 Third Period Lead As Columbus Comes From Behind For 3-2 Overtime Victory

SALT LAKE CITY–Utah goes 5-6-3 for January and closes out month on four game losing streak with overtime loss to the Blue Jackets.

The Utah Hockey Club welcomed the Columbus Blue Jackets to Delta Center on Friday night for the first of their two matchups this season.

Utah spent much of the opening frame putting maximum pressure on goaltender Danil Tarasov to no avail as he turned away all 13 shots. For his part, Karel Vejmelka stopped all 9 attempts from the Blue Jackets.

The second period began with Utah having just under a minute remaining of a power play resulting from Kent Johnson tripping Michael Carcone near the end of the first. Forward Nick Schmaltz was able to convert it 41 seconds into the period for his 11th goal of the season, assisted by Barrett Hayton and Clayton Keller. Vejmelka turned away another 6 shots during the frame, while Tarasov stopped 9 of 10.

A half minute into the third, Alexander Kerfoot put Utah up 2-0 with his 7th goal of the season, assisted by John Marino and Clayton Keller. Unfortunately for Utah, two goals is never a sufficient third period lead and Columbus would find the back of the net with goals by Kirill Marchenko and Kent Johnson to square things up and send the contest to overtime.

Barely a minute into the overtime period, Utah fans felt that sinking feeling once again as Zach Werenski completed the Blue Jackets comeback victory with his 17th of the season, assisted by Cole Sillinger, to send everyone scrambling to the exits.

Captain Clayton Keller was asked in the locker room about the pattern of third period letdowns. “I don’t know. I get some different bounces there on the one and kind of let them back in the game. 60 minutes, they’re going to have a push. I thought they pushed hard in the third and they made it harder on us. It’s frustrating, for sure. I think we’ve talked about it, we’ve had the right mindset. Just got to keep going, learn from it, having confidence, believe you can make the play in the third. So I think that’s next up. … [We]had a discussion just about our third period, and our mindset, and how we have to play for a full 60. I think it has been better, our attitude on the bench, just our third period in general. I think we’re definitely making strides and it’s hard to win in this league, and it’s hard to do it every night and that’s something we’re still figuring out.”

When asked if the team believes it can still make the playoffs, Keller responded, “Yeah, for sure. There’s never any doubt in this room. There’s a lot of games left in the season. We’ve gotten hot this year before and it takes a game or two and your confidence is at an all time high…you squeeze out some wins that maybe you shouldn’t. We just got to stay confident and keep going. Like I said, there’s a lot of games left and that’s when we have to play our best, is these last games.”

Head coach André Tourigny spoke about his team’s opportunities during the game. “I think it was 15 grade-A chances and 11 B. We had the puck a whole lot. There were really unfortunate stakes in the third period there, out of three scoring chances they scored twice. So it’s the second time in two games, a little bit of the same story. We played much better in the third, we had seven scoring chances against three. It’s tough to swallow.”

Next up on the homestand is a Sunday tilt against the St. Louis Blues at 5:00pm.

Utah HC Naming Notes: Immediately following Wednesday night’s first round of fan voting for the new team name, the Utah Hockey Club announced that it was withdrawing the proposed “Utah Wasatch” option and replacing it with Utah Outlaws. The team posted the announcement to their social media on Thursday: “Hey Utah hockey fans! We listened to your feedback and dug into all the Qualtrics data from last night’s survey. For the team name, it’s clear Outlaws should be in the mix instead of Wasatch, so we’re swapping it out. Surveys will continue at the arena Friday, Sunday and Tuesday for you to vote for the options Utah Mammoth, Utah Hockey Club and Utah Outlaws. Excited to see the votes roll in.”

At the arena, fans at the voting areas are required to hand over their mobile phones before receiving a tablet device to cast their votes in order to ensure that no one captures images from the voting. The opening display provides a brief background of each name and then fans are asked their initial preference. They are then shown the logo options and indicate their preference. The logos are then shown on various merchandise items, and the fans are asked on a scale of 1-10 if they would be inclined to purchase the merch. At the conclusion, having now seen all of the options, they are asked again which name with logo they prefer, after which they return the tablet device and retrieve their personal phones. Utah HC will know the outcome following next Tuesday night’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers, but the club is not expected to make any announcements in the near future.

Barracuda slay Silver Knights in 6-2 beatdown victory

SAN JOSE — Luca Cagnoni scored a power play goal in the third period to break a third period deadlock as the San Jose Barracuda defeated the Henderson Silver Knights 6-2 on Friday evening at Tech CU Arena.

San Jose has won three out of their last four games. Henderson has lost two games in a row after winning five of its past six games.

Cagnoni’s game winning goal was set up by Collin Graf just past the halfway mark of the third period. Graf sent the puck back up to the point. Cagnoni made a move around a Silver Knights defender and skated down the left wing before burying a wrist shot top shelf to the far corner for his 11th of the season at the 10:43 mark.

San Jose Sharks goaltender Vitek Vanecek made his first ever start in a ‘Cuda uniform as the Sharks sent home down for a conditioning assignment. Vaneck is recovering from a fractured cheekbone, an injury he sustained back on December 17th, 2024, when a puck sailed on to the bench striking him in the face.

San Jose (23-13-2-2-50 points) drew first blood early in the first period. Danil Gushchin had a shot attempt blocked in front of the crease. Filip Bystedt picked up the puck and made a backhand pass out to the right wing over to Gushchin who beat Silver Knights goalie Akira Schmid with a one-timer to the short side for his ninth goal of the season at the 2:56 mark.

Gushchin has scored in back-to-back games as Bystedt recorded his 13th assist of the season.

Henderson (14-27-2-0-30 points) scored the equalizer just past the halfway point of the opening frame thanks to a turnover by San Jose inside the Silver Knights zone. Jake Furlong was pickpocketed by Mason Morelli at the blueline. Morelli raced down the left wing on an odd man rush. The Silver Knight forward beat Vanecek to the glove side with a wrist shot for an unassisted goal, his eighth of the season at the 10:46 mark

The Silver Knights gained it first and only lead of the game after a faceoff win inside the ‘Cuda zone. Kai Uchacz won a battle behind the net and fed the puck back up to the point over to Jake Bischoff. The Silver Knight defenseman used a screen in front of the crease by Gage Quinney to beat Vanecek with a wrist shot for his third goal of the season at the 12:20 mark.

Barracuda defenseman Luca Cagnoni was injured in the first period when a puck hit him just under the visor. Cagnoni was able to walk off on his own power back to the locker room. He returned to the bench with 2:38 remaining in the opening 20 minutes.

San Jose tied it up early in the second period with an even strength goal. Shakir Mukhamadullin found Tristen Robins up ice in the neutral zone. Robins beat two Silver Knights defenders up the middle before depositing a backhander past Schmid for his sixth goal of the season at the 3:44 mark.

Robins, who has 10 points in his last 11 games, snapped a six-game goal-less draught.

Mukhamadullin, who was hurt temporarily injured when Morelli boarded him into the end boards that drew the penalty that led to Cagnoni’s ensuing goal, set up an insurance goal for the Barracuda under two minutes later. Mukhamadullin’s shot from the point was redirected by Anthony Vincent for his seventh goal of the season at the 12:01 mark. Vincent has also scored in back-to-back games.

San Jose put the game away with two goals in the final two minutes of the contest. Graf walked in on a breakaway for an empty net goal, his eighth of the season, at the 18:15 mark. Then Lucas Carlsson completed the scoring when he finished off a pass from Pavol Regenda for his eighth goal of the season with 1:07 remaining in the contest.

Vanecek (1-0-0) picked up his first win in a Barracuda uniform by stopping 22 of the 24 shots he faced. Schmid (6-15-1) made 34 saves on 39 shots in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES: San Jose finished 1-for-3 on the power play. Henderson went 0-for-2.

MILESTONES: Barracuda forward Scott Sabourin played in his 500th AHL game. His family dropped the ceremonial first puck before the game. San Jose defenseman Ethan Frisch played in his 100th AHL game.

NBA G League Action: Kings sweep two game set over Bulls in 117-110 win

STOCKTON–The Stockton Kings looked to finish January off on a high note, as they took on the Windy City Bulls Friday night, after defeating the Grand Rapids Gold on Thursday. The Kings would ultimately win against a resilient Bulls team, with a final score of 117-107

The Bulls and Kings went back-and-forth in the first quarter, with the Kings narrowly exiting the quarter with a lead, 28-26. The second quarter was when Stockton really started pulling away though, outscoring their opposition 28-15 and extending the lead to 15 points heading into halftime.

Jon Elmore had a tremendous start to the night, going 5-6 from beyond the arc early on. He has struggled shooting from distance lately, however he seems to be finding his form once again.

Boogie Ellis was also firing on all cylinders, hitting multiple deep three pointers in the third quarter.

The Bulls had a strong run late in the third, after trailing by more than 20 points at one point, they brought it back within 11 but the Kings quickly swung momentum back in their favor with a few forced turnovers and defensive stops. Just a couple of minutes later, the Kings’ lead would be back up to 23 points. The Bulls would get three back before the end of the frame, but Stockton would head into the fourth with an 89-69 lead.

The Bulls had another great run to start the fourth, bringing the Kings’ lead back down to 12 just three minutes into the quarter. With five minutes remaining, the Bulls brought the game within single digits, trailing just 99-92. It went from seeming like a clear cut win for the Kings, to anyone’s ballgame in just a few moments.

The Kings responded by quickly getting the lead back to double-digits but the Bulls never let off the gas either. With 37 seconds remaining, it was a seven point game once again. The Bulls kept fighting but ultimately Elmore would dribble out the clock, and the Kings won 117-107, sweeping the back-to-back two game series. Elmore led the team in scoring with 21 points, while Ellis finished his night with 20 of his own.

Adama Sanogo had a great night for the Bulls despite the loss, finishing with 27 points and 14 rebounds on the night.

The Kings continued their great season with a hard fought victory over Windy City, and now they’ll head on the road for quite a while with their next outing in Mexico City.

Sacramento Kings podcast with Jeremiah Salmonson: Kings face first place Thunder Saturday at OKC

#1 Tyrese Maxey led the way for the Philadelphia 76ers with 30 points as the Sixers defeated the Sacramento Kings 117-104. It was the Sixers fourth straight win and it was the Kings third loss in four games.

#2 Maxey has scored at least 25 points or more in 12 straight games and on Wednesday had eight assists.

#3 The Sixers Kelly Oubre Jr had 15 points, Eric Gordon 14 points, Ricky Council IV had 13 points. The 76ers ended a seven game skid.

#4 The Kings Malik Monk in the first half scored 16 of his first 21 points and Domantas Sabonis scored his second consecutive triple double and eighth triple double of the season.

#5 The Kings head to Oklahoma City to face the Thunder on Sat Feb 1. The Thunder are first place in the NBA Western Conference at 37-9, winning seven of their last ten games and have a 20-3 record. There is little doubt the Thunder will be a handful for the Kings how do you see this match up?

#1 Winnipeg Jets Parker Ford who grew up rooting for the Boston Bruins as a kid scored in his NHL debut against the Bruins as well as the Jets scoring a total of four straight goals in the third period in a four goal 6-2 win over the Bruins.

#2  Minnesota Wild goaltender 40 year Mark Andre Fleury stopped 19 shots and recorded his 76th NHL shutout for the Wild’s third straight win 4-0 over the Montreal Canadiens. Fleury picked up his first shutout since March 14th. This could very well be Fleury’s last game in Montreal as he is retiring after this season. Fleury who grew up a Canadiens fan lived in Sorel, Quebec just an hour from Montreal.

#3 The Washington Capitals Alexander Ovechkin scored his career 876th goal and needs 19 to surpass former Los Angeles Kings NHL goal leader Wayne Gretzky who has 894 career goals. Despite the Ovechkin goal the Caps lost to the Ottawa Senators 5-4 at Canadian Tire Center in Ottawa on Thursday.

#4 Tampa Bay Lightning goaltender Andre Vasilevskiy stopped 28 shots in the Lightning’s 3-0 shutout over the Los Angeles Kings at the Amalie Arena in Tampa Bay. For Vasilevskiy this was his third shutout for the season and his 37th career shutout. The Lightning got two goals from Brandon Hagel and a goal from Anthony Cirelli.

#5 Mikko Rantanen scored his first goal since joining the Carolina Hurricanes in their 3-2 win over the Chicago Blackhawks at Lenovo Center on Thursday night. Rantanen who came over to Carolina from the Colorado Avalanche that involved a three trade deal that included the Blackhawks forwards Martin Necas and Jack Drury and a 2025 second round NHL draft pick.

NBA G League Action: Kings come away with 111-106 win to split with Grand Rapids

STOCKTON–The Stockton Kings hosted the Grand Rapids Gold for the second straight game on Thursday night, as they looked to get revenge for a disappointing loss on Tuesday. Revenge is what they got with a 111-106 win to split the two game set at Adventist Health Arena.

The Gold got out to an early lead, much like they did on Tuesday night. However, the Kings took control of the game in the second and third quarters, allowing themselves to head into the final frame with a lead. Ultimately, the Kings would hold onto their lead and walk away with a 111-106 victory, and as a result, they were returning to their winning ways. The Kings have been dominant at home, and Thursday night’s victory improved their home record to 8-2, while their overall record improved to 12-3

The Kings’ top standout was, unsurprisingly, Colby Jones, who went 13-17 from the field and scored a total of 34 points. Their two representatives in the upcoming G League Up Next Game, Isaac Jones and Skal Labissiere also had strong performances. Jones had a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds while Labissiere was very efficient going 7-10 from the field and finishing with 14 points.

The Kings had four players finish in double-digits for points, the lone starter to not achieve the feat was Isaiah Crawford who finished just short, with nine points on the night.

Trey Alexander led the Gold in scoring, ending the night going 12-19 which resulted in him recording 31 points in the losing effort. Meanwhile, Spencer Jones finished with 26 points and just narrowly missed out on a double-double of his own, finishing with nine rebounds on the night.

The main difference between Thursday night’s outing and Tuesday’s was that the Kings’ shot selection was a lot better and as a result their efficiency was much higher. It is worth noting that Dexter Dennis didn’t play after a collision below the basket on Tuesday, however, he was on the roster just listed as inactive.

The Kings won’t get much time to rest, as they’ll be back in action Friday night as they host the Windy City Bulls. As the Kings look to extend their lead in the Western Conference and pull away from the second-place Austin Spurs, they’ll need another strong performance against an Eastern Conference opponent tomorrow night. The Bulls are currently 15th in the east, but as the Kings’ performance on Tuesday showed, anybody can win on any given night in the G League.

Tar Heels Leave Cal Women Stuck, Win 65-52 at Haas

BERKELEY, CA–North Carolina’s ACC-leading defense, as advertised, gave the Cal Bears fits on Thursday night.

The Tar Heels forced Cal into catch-up mode from the start and kept the hosts out of step until the conclusion of the third quarter, which ended with the Bears trailing by just two points. But the fourth quarter saw the visitors’ pressure intensify, holding Cal to just seven points the rest of the way in a disappointing 65-52 loss.

The Bears squandered an opportunity to move closer to the top 16 teams nationally, who hold aspirations of hosting the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament. Cal remains entrenched in the post-season picture, but their opportunities to move up in the rankings could be limited to their upcoming road trip to Louisville and Notre Dame.

In the absence of a win, the highlight of the evening for Cal was leading scorer Ioanna Krimili’s 400th career 3-pointer. The 6th year guard moved into a select group of 16 women that have achieved the feat.

Krimili led Cal with 20 points, and Michelle Onyiah added 14 despite being limited to 18 minutes of playing time due to foul trouble and cramping. Marta Suarez and Lulu Twidale suffered rough nights shooting with a combined 5 of 23 accuracy.

UNC’s Alyssa Ustby, in her 132nd start, was again the key to the visitor’s defensive effort, limiting Suarez and Twidale individually while helping the Heels control the glass with a 38-28 edge.

“Their defensive pressure, their intensity gave us some trouble,” coach Charmin Smith said. “They kind of bullied us off our lines in trying to set screens, let alone use screens.”

Cal played without Natalia Ackerman and Giselle Maul which limited their bench production, and made the fourth quarter especially rough as fatigue and missed shots allowed UNC to increase their lead to as many as 14 points. The Bears lost at Haas Pavilion for the first time this season after rattling off 11 consecutive wins.

Cal’s weekend at home concludes with a contest against the Pitt Panthers, who have won just one of their nine conference games and are in danger of being one of the three teams that don’t qualify for the ACC Tournament. That game is scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m.

Kraken Sink Sharks 6-2, Montour Scores Twice

The San Jose Sharks fell 6-2 to the Seattle Kraken on Thursday. Chandler Stephenson, Oliver Bjorkstrand, Brandon Montour (2 goals), Jaden Schwartz, and Eeli Tolvane scored for Seattle. Joey Daccord made 26 saves for the win. Carl Grundstrom and Tyler Toffoli scored for San Jose. Yaroslav Askarov made seven saves on 11 shots before being replaced by Alexandar Georgiev, who made 20 saves in the loss.

The Kraken took an early lead at 3:55 of the first period. Chandler Stephenson got a break away courtesy of a series of good passes to get the puck out of Seattle’s zone. By the time the puck got to Stephenson, he was almost at the Sharks blue line and there was no one between him and Askarov. The shot went by Askarov on the glove side. Assists went to Oliver Bjorkstrand and Eeli Tolvanen.

Carl Grundstrom tied the game at 17:55. Grundstrom skated to the net from the right side, passing back and forth with Will Smith, before taking the shot. Assists went to Smith and Mikael Granlund.

The Sharks outshot the Kraken 11-8 in the first period. There were no penalties called in the first.

Oliver Bjorkstrand made it 2-1 at 2:03 of the second period. Bjorkstrand scored from just outside the blue paint off a pass from Chandler Stephenson. Assists went to Stephenson and Vince Dunn.

Brandon Montour scored the third Seattle goal less than a minute later. S Wright stole the puck from the Sharks and passed it over to Montour, who was just skating into the zone. Montour took the shot from high in the slot and beat Azkarov on the glove side.

Jaden Schwartz made it 4-1 at 5:58. Jamie Oleksiak’s pass found Schwartz breaking away at the Sharks’ blue line. No one got in front of him as he skated in and shot at the puck past Askarov.

The Sharks pulled Askarov after that one and put Georgiev in net.

Brandon Montour scored his second of the night on a power play at 7:52. Montour caught a cross-ice pass from Jared McCann before shooting from the hash marks into the far side of the net. Assists went to McCann and Chandler Stephenson.

In the second period, several calls gave the Kraken two power plays and the Sharks one. The Kraken outshot the Sharks 17-9 in the second.

Tyler Toffoli got one back for the Sharks at 8:06 of the third period. Macklin Celebrini got a pass through to Toffoli in the center of the ice. Toffoli got a wrist shot through traffic in front of the net for his 18th of the season. Assists went to Celebrini and Henry Thrun.

Eeli Tolvanen made it 6-2 at 12:18. The Kraken took the puck from the Sharks on a zone entry and went to the other way. Tolvanen used Cody Ceci as a screen for his shot, Ceci being the only Shark to catch him as he skated into the zone. Joshua Mahura got an assist on the goal.

The Sharks next play on Tuesday back in San Jose against the visiting Montreal Canadiens at 7:30 PM PT.
