Former San Jose State offensive coordinator named to College Football Hall of Fame

Dennis Erickson’s last stop as an assistant football coach was at San Jose State for the 1979 through 1981 seasons before a long, successful career as a head coach. Even though it’s just the first week of the New Year, Erickson will be planning a December 10th visit in New York City for an induction into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Erickson and Joe Taylor, who won 70.6% of his games and four national championships at historically black colleges, are the two head coaches joining 13 players to be named to the 2019 College Football Hall of Fame class.

During his three seasons at SJSU, Erickson oversaw one of the most potent offenses in college football with Jack Elway as the Spartans head coach. SJSU had a winning season in each of his three years and was the 1981 Pacific Coast Athletic Association champion.

With Ed Luther at quarterback in 1979, SJSU was second nationally in passing offense and seventh in total offense. The next two seasons with Steve Clarkson at quarterback, SJSU was 10th in passing offense. The 1981 team included future NFL players: halfback Gerald Willhite, wide receivers Stacey Bailey, Mervyn Fernandez and Tim Kearse, and tight end Tracy Franz, was sixth in Division I-A in scoring offense.

Erickson came to SJSU after assistant coaching positions at Idaho and Fresno State. His first college head coaching position was at Idaho from 1982-85 followed by stops at Wyoming in 1986, Washington State from 1987-88, Miami (Fla.) from 1989-94, Oregon State from 1999-2002, back to Idaho in 2006 and Arizona State from 2007-11. Erickson’s teams were declared national champions for the 1989 and 1991 seasons and won six conference titles. He was a two-time national Coach of the Year and compiled a head coaching record of 179-96-1.

Erickson also was a head coach in the NFL for the Seattle Seahawks (1995-98) and the San Francisco 49ers (2003-04). He was the only one of six FBS coaches on the ballot named to the 2019 College Football Hall of Fame class. Taylor was the coach selected from the Divisional ballot covering NCAA Divisions I-AA (now Football championship Subdivision — FCS), II, III and NAIA.

Coaches are eligible for consideration after 10 seasons as a head coach and achieving a winning percentage of .600 or higher for a career of 100 or more games.

Former SJSU head coaches John Ralston (1993-96) and Fielding Yost (1900) and halfback Willie Heston from the 1898 through 1900 Spartan teams are enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame based in Atlanta, Ga.

Bridges was a second-team All-Mountain West selection as a senior. One of four team captains, he was credited with a single-season personal best 70 tackles, tops among SJSU defensive linemen, and 8.5 tackles for loss. His 70 tackles were tops among Mountain West defensive linemen.

Bridges is listed as No. 47 on the National team roster.

Roberts was in on 47 stops and was third on the team with 8.0 tackles for loss. The Spartans’ three-year starter forced two fumbles, recovered a third fumble, had a quarterback sack and was credited with a Spartan safety in the Colorado State game.

Roberts is listed as #90 on the National team 68-player roster. With Bridges, they are two of the seven Mountain West players in the game.

Last year, cornerback Jermaine Kelly was the first SJSU player to play in the game. He would become a seventh round choice of the Houston Texans in the 2018 NFL Draft.

What Would a Win Mean?
The Spartans are looking for their first win over a ranked team since 1999 when they defeated No. 19 Alabama 60-59 in overtime. A win would also be the fourth of the season, tying last season’s overall total.

Sharpest Shooter in the West (or Anywhere Else, Really)
Sophomore Noah Baumann ranks third in the nation in 3-point FG percentage. He is touting a 55.4% clip on 31-of-56 shooting. He is also averaging 2.4 3’s per game, which ranks in the top 10 in the Mountain West. He has hit at least 1 3-point bucket in 11 straight games.

Steady Steadman
JUCO transfer Michael Steadman has made a big impact this season on and off the court. The 6’10″ forward is averaging a team-high 13.8 points per game and ranks fourth in the MW with 9.2 rebounds per game. He also ranks 40th nationally in rebounds per game and 37th in defensive rebounds per game. He has six double-doubles on the season, ranking third in the conference and 23rd nationally and has scored in double figures in 12 of 13 games, including 11 straight.

Staff Shakeup
Head coach Jean Prioleau made some changes to his staff in the offseason as he brought in former NC State All-American Julius Hodge as an assistant coach and promoted director of operations Ryan Cooper to assistant coach.

Oh My, Oumar!
Senior center Oumar Barry is playing his best basketball as a Spartan as of late. Against Bethune-Cookman, he finished with a then-career-high 13 points and seven rebounds. He followed that up with his most dominating performance at SJSU as he recorded his first career double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds, his first-career game with double digit rebounds. Barry also blocked two shots and was 7 of 10 at the free throw line to help the Spartans to a victory.

Barry followed up with another double-double against Stanford (15 points, 10 rebounds). After playing 38 career games without recording a double-double, he now has two in the last four games.

Barry’s then scored a career-high 18 points before fouling out with 4:36 to play at Cal and led the team with 11 points at Saint Mary’s. In his last five games, he is averaging 14.2 points per game.

Series History With Nevada
Nevada holds a 59-50 advantage in the series and has won nine of the last 10 games. SJSU’s last win was on February 18, 2014 in a 66-64 win in Reno, Nev. Prior to that, SJSU’s last win was on January 10, 2008.

The Wolf Pack welcomes the Spartans to Reno with a 14-1 record and a No. 10 national ranking in the AP rankings. After reaching as high as No. 6 in the poll after winning 14 straight games, Nevada suffered their first loss to New Mexico 85-58. Despite the loss, the Wolf Pack still sits atop the MW standings and is 7-0 at home on the season.

Nevada leads the MW in scoring offense at 80.4 points per game. They also lead the conference in turnover margin with +2.9, which does not bode well for the Spartans, who rank last in the category at -3.9. The outstanding trio of forward Jordan Caroline and twins Caleb and Cody Martin are among the best players in the MW. Caroline is just below averaging a double-double at 18.3 points and 9.8 rebounds per game.

Cal Bears basketball podcast with Michael and Morris: Cal needs to figure out UCLA and USC

photo by bruinnation.com: The UCLA Bruins Moses Brown throws down as Cal Bears defender Justice Sueing could just watch during Saturday night’s game at Pauley Pavilion

On the Cal Bears basketball podcast with Morris and Michael:

We thought we’d have some good news to talk about regarding the down Pac-12 conference with two of the more down teams in that conference USC and UCLA. One of them, the UCLA Bruins, started to turn it around before Cal got to town. UCLA fired head coach Steve Alford, and all of sudden, the Bruins have become unstoppable.

UCLA turned it around immediately. They came off those four losses. UCLA lost to Liberty in a 30 point blowout loss. There was Ohio State they played Stanford and they all beat up on Cal. The Bears got 92 points against Stanford and the Bruins. No matter what they did in this last game, they just couldn’t get past UCLA.

Southern California earned its fourth consecutive men’s basketball win Sunday, knocking off Stanford 77-66 at Galen Center in Los Angeles.

Nick Rakocevic led the Trojans (9-6 overall, 2-0 Pac-12) with 23 points, with Bennie Boatwright adding 22. USC won its first two conference games of the season for the first time since 2010.

Rakocevic also grabbed 10 rebounds, giving him his seventh double-double of the season. Rakocevic and Boatwright combined for 45 points, 17 rebounds, three assists, three blocks, two steals and only two turnovers.

The Cardinal (7-7, 0-2), meanwhile, have lost three of their last four contests.

Cormac Ryan led Stanford with 18 points — all on 3-pointers he hit in the second half. Daejon Davis and KZ Okpala contributed 14 and 12 points, respectively, for the Cardinal.

The Trojans jumped to a 13-point run to open the game and led until Okpala drained a 3-pointer with 12:45 remaining, giving Stanford a 49-46 lead. Southern Cal later pulled away with an 11-0 run, taking a 68-55 lead with 2:22 to play.

It was a heck of a basketball game on Saturday night: the Warriors squeaked by the Kings 127-123

gsw 1-6 final

By Charlie O. Mallonee

Sacramento — The sellout crowd of 17583 fans at the Golden 1 Center on Saturday was treated to a real example of an NBA game in this new era as they saw the Golden State Warriors hold off the upstart Sacramento Kings 127-123. Not only was it an exciting contest, but it was also an NBA record-setting game.

The game featured 18 lead changes and was tied 11 times. The Warriors largest lead was 16 and that came in the first period. The Kings biggest lead of the game was nine points.

The constant end-to-end action had the crowd in a literal frenzy from the opening tipoff to the final buzzer.

The teams “made it rain” to set an NBA record

Curry scored a game-high 42 points Photo: @warriors

The teams combined to hit 41 3-point field goals in the game which set a new record for the NBA. The Warriors put in 21-of-47 (44.7%) their attempts from behind the 3-point line. The Kings converted 20-of-36 (55.6%) their shots from long distance in the game.

123 of the 250 total points scored in the game came off 3-point field goals. That is a true representation of where today’s NBA is headed now and in the foreseeable future.

Steph Curry led the 3-point scoring barrage sinking 10-of-20 attempts. The Kings’ Buddy Hield (yes, the guy from Oklahoma who would never be able to hit the 3-pointer in the Association according to scouts) converted 8-of-13 attempts from long range. The big surprise may have been Sacramento’s Justin Jackson who went 5-for-7 from behind the arc.

The fans were in seventh heaven.

The teams played evenly except in one area

gsw 1-6 pic 2

The battle in the paint was dramatic on Saturday night. The Warriors scored 40 points down low while the Kings put up 38 points in the paint.

2nd Chance Points – which can determine the outcome of a game – was a dead-even tie. Golden State scored 14 2nd Chance Points and the Kings 14 of their own. GSW grabbed 12 offensive rebounds, while SAC pulled down 14 rebounds on offense.

The “runaway” Kings dominated the fastbreak points category in this game. Sacramento scored 32 points via the fast break while the Warriors recorded only 15 points via the break. There is no doubt that the Kings love to run.

Top Performers

Kings (19-20)

  • Buddy Hield was the Kings’ leading scorer with 32 points. He also added four assists and five rebounds.

  • Justin Jackson came off the bench to put 28 points. Jackson shot 10-for-14 overall for the game. He also grabbed five defensive rebounds.

  • Bogdan Bogdanovic scored 17 points, dished out seven assists and added six rebounds. He also added three steals.
  • Willie Cauley-Stein recorded another double-double putting up 14 points and hauling in 13 rebounds. WCS keeps hitting that double-double goal.

Warriors (26-14)

  • Steph Curry was the game’s high scorer with 42 points. Curry went 14-for-25 from the field (10-for-20 from 3-point land).
  • Kevin Durant scored 29 points and dished out nine assists.
  • Klay Thompson added 20 points in the contest.
  • That was a total of 91 points from the Warriors big three.

Coach Joerger’s Postgame Analysis

Coach Dave Joerger felt like his team played one its better games of the season.

Joerger loved Buddy Hield’s play and he explained why

Joerger had some great things to say about Justin Jackson
