San Jose State looks to rebound with win over New Mexico Wednesday

San Jose State men’s basketball will wrap up their two-game road trip with a trip to Albuquerque, N.M. as they look to rebound with a win over the New Mexico Lobos Wednesday night. Tipoff set for 6:00 pm PT on the Mountain West Network. Justin Allegri has the Spartans play-by-play call on TuneIn.

In case you missed it, you can check out Spartans head coach Jean Prioleau’s first mic-d up segment of the season.

Back to the upcoming game, San Jose State (3-19, 0-0 Mountain West) will face off against New Mexico (10-13, 4-7 Mountain West) in a conference matchup. SJSU had lost 13 in a row with their most recent loss occurring at Boise State in a 105-57 rout on Saturday. Meanwhile, UNM–like SJSU–suffered a blowout of their own 91-62 at the hands of No. 7 Nevada on Saturday.

The Spartans recently shared a fun fact about sophomore guard Noah Baumann. Baumann extended his three-point field goals made record to 20 games on Saturday. He’s only one shy of tying the record of 21 consecutive made, which was set by former guard Robert Owens during the 2009-10 season. Owens was part of the Spartans roster in 2009-10 and watched his college basketball team wrap up the season with a 14-17, 6-10 Western Athletic Conference record, but ultimately lost to New Mexico State 90-69 at the Lawlor Events Center in Reno, Nev. in the quarterfinals of the 2010 WAC Men’s Basketball Tournament. SJSU was coached by fifth-year head coach George Nessman. Nessman currently serves as an Athletic Director at Justin-Siena High School in Napa, Calif.

At the moment, SJSU is most definitely honored to host a Coaching for Literacy Fight for Literary Game to support the nationwide #Fight4Literary movement. Why’s that? Literacy among children is very crucial. Did you know that 69 percent of fourth graders in California are not reading at the grade-level? Probably not. Well, now you know!

Thornton’s Historic Night Leads Sharks to 7-2 Win

By: Joe Lami and Marko Ukalovic

VANCOUVER, BC–Jumbo Joe Thornton made history on Monday night passing Gordie Howe for ninth all-time in assists notching the 1,050th of his career in Vancouver as part of San Jose’s 7-2 blowout of the Vancouver Canucks.

The record-breaking pass came at 17:30 of the second period, as Thornton led a 2-on-1 breakaway finding Kevin Labanc, who slapped it past rookie goaltender Mike DiPietro making it 6-1. On the play, Jumbo Joe also tied Teemu Selanne for 15th in all-time points in the same game he moved into 15th all-time in games played with 1,540.

“There’s no words to describe being in a dressing room with a guy that’s ahead of Gordie Howe now. It’s pretty crazy, he’s a special player” said Logan Couture.

“When you pass Gordie Howe on any list, I don’t care what list it is, that’s the story of the night. It’s an unbelievable accomplishment, unbelievable career and that’s something that should be celebrated, and our whole group is excited to be here to witness it” added Peter DeBoer.

The pair of Thornton and Labanc has been incredible of late as the two have connected for three of Labanc’s four goals in the last two games.

With the win, the Sharks have swept Western Canada and have extended their win streak to six games jumping into first place in the Pacific Division.

The Sharks dominance of Western Canada continued early, as they quickly went up 3-0 on Vancouver before the Canucks could even get a shot on net halfway through the first period.

Timo Meier welcomed DiPietro to the NHL by scoring on the first shot he would see for his 20th goal of the season. Meier became the fifth Shark to hit 20 goals this season, making San Jose the only team in the NHL to have five 20-goal scorers. In just their 57th game of the year, it’s the fastest San Jose has reached the mark in franchise history.

“Tonight, we knew they were in a tough spot starting [DiPietro] and we wanted to jump on him early. We scored on the first couple of shifts and were in control all night” mentioned Couture.

The Sharks continued their dominance with Evander Kane and Melker Karlsson finding the back of the net before the halfway mark. Kane’s 25th of the season came on a fluttering puck from the right point off the backhand that hit Ben Hutton before going in. Karlsson tipped a Brent Burns wrist shot at 8:48 to make it 3-0.

Vancouver finally got their legs going late in the first and registered their first shot at the 12:24 mark. They made it 3-1 right before the final buzzer thanks to a fantastic play by rookie sensation Elias Pettersson who gained the zone and threw a no-look pass to the top of the right circle finding Bo Horvat for an easy one-timer goal with six seconds remaining in the period. Horvat slapped his 20th of the season to the top right corner of the net.

The Sharks didn’t let the late first period goal come back to bite them as they completely dominated the rest of the way. With no backup available for Vancouver, they continued to pound the puck past the 19-year old with Kane scoring his second, Tomas Hertl, Labanc, and Joe Pavelski all jumping in on the scoring.

Vancouver jumped on the board once again in the third to make it 6-2, as Derek Pulliot slotted his third goal of the season thanks to a beautiful pass from Zack MacEwen, recording his first point in his first NHL game.

Pavelski netted his 30th of the season on a deflection play late in the third to make it 7-2. It’s the fifth time in his career Pavelski has hit 30 goals, as the captain continues his career pace.

Most impressively, the Sharks saw all four lines get on the scoring sheet as they dominated five-on-five. Their powerplay was the one weak spot going 0-for-3 and only generating three shots.

Martin Jones was steady in net for the Sharks stopping 25 of the 27 shots sent his way. He continues to lead all goaltenders since the start of December with a record of 18-5-1 and has allowed two goals or less in ten of his last 15 starts.

San Jose returns home as one of the hottest teams scoring at least five goals in the last three games, including four of the previous six. They host the Washington Capitals on Thursday to kick off a three-game homestand.

AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am: Mickelson finished off comeback win

Phil Mickelson wanted more than anything on Sunday night to finish the last two holes of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Fifteen hours later, he was able to claim that crown.

Mickelson and Paul Casey, whom he had tracked down the day before to take a three-shot lead when he simply ran out of daylight, played the final two holes of the tournament Monday morning, with the big left-hander holding off the Englishman to win this event for the fifth time of his career.

“This is a special place here at Pebble Beach,” the 48-year-old Mickelson said. “It’s special to win, and I have so many incredible memories and recollections over the years, and to play some of my best golf on a Sunday and be able to catch a good player in Paul Casey, it means a lot to me.” It was Mickelson’s first win on the PGA Tour in nearly a year, when he beat Justin Thomas in a playoff to take the WGC-Mexico Championship last March, and it was the 44th overall victory of his career.

All was not lost for Casey, however. He and his pro-am partner, Don Colleran (—–), won the team competition, the first time they have won that in their careers.

“It’s been a treat this week,” Casey said. “I got an up-front close look at Phil shooting a great round of golf and winning this golf event.

“I’m happy with the way I played. I’m very happy we won the team competition. It’s been a very good week.”

Stanford returns home to host USC Wednesday night

The Stanford Cardinal held onto a three-game winning streak with wins over Oregon State, Cal and Colorado, and Oscar da Silva averaged 17.0 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. But the Cardinal (12-11, 5-6 Pac-12) dug themselves in a hole and never recovered as the Oregon Ducks (15-9, 6-5 Pac-12) on Sunday evening as they were routed by 20-plus points in a 69-46 loss at the Matthew Knight Arena.

While the Matthew Knight Arena may not have been as loud as the Autzen Stadium, the Ducks men’s basketball team draws a decent amount of fans, too. After all, Oregon is a pretty prominent university, despite what the East Coast media guys and gals might say. The Ducks currently rank fifth in the Pac-12 standings.

In case you missed it, Stanford was held to 46 points for the second time this season, making 15-of-55 field goal attempts (27 percent) for their second-worst shooting night of the season. Oregon, however, hit 44 percent from the field (26-of-59) and held a 41-37 rebounding edge. The Ducks cruised to a 69-46 loss. Payton Pritchard led the Ducks with 20 points. Louis Kings scored 16 points and Victor Bailey came off the bench to score 11 points. When it came down to defense, Kenny Wooten matched his career high with seven blocks.

The Ducks won four of their last five games, while the Cardinal suffered a tough loss. Of course, Stanford can rebound and defeat the rival USC Trojans (13-11, 6-5 Pac-12), but that’s going to take some work, as USC is three steps ahead in the Pac-12 standings. Stanford can’t afford to go through another shooting slump in the early moments of the first half as they recently wrapped their second-worst, first-half shooting performance of the 2019 season with only 27.3 percent from the field.

The Cardinal left the Beaver State with a split of the Oregon-based schools, but until good news comes along, they remain without the services of Daejon Davis, who suffered a head-to-head injury last Thursday against Oregon State. The Cardinal now turn their attention to their upcoming homestand as they’ll play five of their next seven games at home, which can benefit them if home court advantage helps them in their favor. The Cardinal just have to get to take on USC Wednesday evening at 8:00 pm PT on ESPNU.

Notes: The Cardinal wished the best to Washington Wizards point guard and Stanford alum Chasson Randle, who was given the nod after Czech point guard and shooting guard Tomas Satoransky was out Monday due to a personal matter. Randle, a Rockland, Ill. native, attended Rock Island High School and Stanford University. Randle went undrafted in the 2015 NBA Draft and played in the states as well as abroad until re-signing with the Wizards on Dec. 18, 2018.

AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am: Champion will have to wait another day

By Jeremy Harness

In a tournament that has featured some delays and a play suspension in the last three days,

The tee times were delayed three hours on Sunday, and when the course finally opened up for the players for the final round, the skies were clear and the course looked as beautiful as ever.

However, that did not change the fact that it was downright cold at Pebble Beach. The morning temperatures hovered around the high 30’s, which is considered to be unusual for this area, even in this time of year.

Paul Casey started the final round with the lead, but Phil Mickelson caught him at the ninth hole at 15-under with a birdie, and then overtook him on the back nine. While Casey could not get anything going and had to settle for pars, Mickelson birdied the 10th, 13th and 14th to take a three-shot lead.

He then parred the 15th and 16th holes, and then at around 5:50pm PST, a discussion was has as to stopping play, as the sun had set five minutes prior.

By all accounts, Mickelson was doing everything in his power to keep going and try to finish the round. However, Casey was much more hesitant and ultimately decided to call it quits until Monday morning. At that point, three horns blasted, signaling the suspension of play.

“Well, I get exactly where Paul’s coming from,” Mickelson said. “It’s dark, and we’re going to have a good chance tomorrow to come out on fresh greens and have them mown. They got pretty rough this afternoon, so I totally get it.

“But I have pretty good vision, I can see fine, and I’m playing well, so I wanted to continue, and that’s all there is to it. In all honesty, it’s probably a good thing because now we’ll play the last couple holes in pure conditions, and it will be helpful for us both.” Mickelson and Casey will resume play at 8:00am PST Monday morning, and admission to the course will be free – with no ticket required – and 17 Mile Drive, which usually requires some sort of a pass, will be open to the public on Monday.

Scott Stallings made a huge charge on Sunday, with a mix of great putting and a brilliant short game, to shoot a six-under round of 66. He was five-under on the front side with no bogeys, including three birdies in a row on holes six through eight.

He dropped a shot at the 12th, but he quickly rebounded with a birdie at the 13th, and then he closed things out with a well-played 18th that resulted in his draining a three-footer for a birdie.

Ducks shut down struggling Cardinal 69-46

Leading from wire-to-wire, Oregon cruised to a 69-46 Pac-12 men’s basketball victory over visiting Stanford Sunday in Eugene, Ore., as the Ducks have won four of their last five games.

Payton Pritchard’s 20 points led the Ducks (15-9 overall, 6-5 Pac-12), along with 16 points from Louis King and Victor Bailey’s 11 points off the bench. Defensively, Kenny Wooten matched his career high with seven blocks. King also had seven rebounds.

Bryce Wills, a freshman who is the Pac-12’s youngest player, paced the Cardinal (12-11, 5-6) with 13 points. KZ Okpala was held to 10 points – nearly eight below his average. Josh Sharma scored eight points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

In an overall miserable night for the Cardinal, Stanford was held to 46 points for the second time this season, making 15 of 55 field goal attempts (27 percent), its second-worst shooting night of the season.

Meanwhile, Oregon hit 44 percent from the field (26 of 59) and held a 41-37 rebounding edge.

The Cardinal opened the game by missing 21 of their first 22 shots – five of them blocked by Wooten – and Oregon led 16-2 13 minutes into the game. Oregon led 30-20 at halftime.

The Cardinal were without the services of point guard Daejon Davis, who sat out Sunday’s game after suffering a head-to-head injury on Thursday against Oregon State. A Stanford official would only comment that Davis was unavailable due to an unspecified injury.

Stanford returns home on Wednesday night to host Southern California. Tipoff set for 8:00 pm PT.

Warriors win another thriller as they come back to defeat the Heat 120-118

by Jerry Feitelberg

Oakland- It appeared to be deja vu all over as the Warriors, as they did in Phoenix Friday night, got off to a slow start and trailed the visiting Heat until late in the third quarter. The Warriors could do nothing right in the early going, and the Heat did everything right as the visitors raced out to an early 34-24 lead after twelve minutes of play. The Heat have two players on their roster that have killed the W’s in the past. They are the big center Hassan Whiteside and guard Dion Waiters. It seems these two mark the calendar as to when they will be playing Golden State and salivate knowing they do well against the World Champions.  The Warriors outscored the Heat 30-25 n the second quarter and finished the half trailing 59-54.

The Warriors made the necessary adjustments at halftime and scorched the Heat 36-23 in the third quarter. The W’s led 90-82 and the Big Three of Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson, and Steph Curry led the team in scoring. The W’s started the fourth quarter with an 8-point lead but any team in the NBA can easily make up that deficit, and that is what the Heat did. The Warriors had a slim one-point lead 115-114, but the W’s turned the ball over twice in a row. Josh Richardson and Dwayne Wade had back-to-back steals, and that gave the Heat the lead 118-115. Kevin Durant connected on a three to tie the game. Durant recorded 11 straight points down the stretch for the Warriors. He missed a three-pointer that would have put the W’s in the lead. However, DeMarcus Cousins was able to snag the rebound. Cousins was fouled on the play, and he was able to make both free throws with just 5.4 seconds left to play. The Heat tried but failed to score, and the Warriors won the game.

Game Notes and Stats- The Warriors are now 15-1 in their 16 games and improved to 40-15 for the year. Miami drops to 25-29. Kevin Durant led the W’s with 39 points, 6 boards, and 4 assists. Draymond Green put 5 points on the board, but he corraled 7 rebounds and dished out 14 assists. Klay Thompson had 29, and he connected on six 3s. Curry added 25, and he made five 3s. The Warrior bench added just 15 points. Cousins had 7 points but his two free throws late in the fourth quarter won it for the Warriors. “I was really happy that he was out there at the end of the game,” coach Steve Kerr said of Cousins, playing his 10th game for Golden State. “It’s good experiences for him because he hasn’t been out there much since he’s come back to close games.”

Josh Richardson led the Heat Heat with 37. He made eight three-pointers. Dion Water had 24, and he made six three. Justisce Winslow had 24 including 4 threes, Hassan Whiteside finished the night with a double-double. He had 13 points and 14 rebounds. Dwayne Wade, who may have made his last visit to Oracle Arena as a player, ended the night with 10 points. The Warriors gave a nice tribute to Wade as they showed highlights of his career on the big screen and the fans gave him a nice round of applause.

Andre Iguodala was not able to play Sunday night as he tweaked hi left hamstring Friday night against the Suns in Phoenix. The Warriors resume play Tuesday night against the Utah Jazz at Oracle Arena. Game time is at 7:30 pm.
