That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Giants no longer after former Dodger Yaseil Puig; At Giants Fan Fest Pence says he loves being back

San Francisco Giants outfielder Hunter Pence is welcomed back by his teammates Alex Dickerson and Buster Posey at Giants Fan Fest on Saturday at Oracle Park in San Francisco (sfchronicle.com photo)

On That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary:

#1 The San Francisco Giants were one of the teams that were expressing interest in acquiring former Los Angeles Dodger Yaseil Puig but no more. Puig commands a seven year worth $42 million deal. The Giants have said they are no longer interested in obtaining Puig. Was it his unpopularity with his teammates with past teams the issue or the cost of his contract demands?

#2 It was a big deal at Giants fan fest when Hunter Pence sat on stage with an untucked Giants jersey on and was happy to be back in San Francisco again

#3 Pence signed for a one year deal worth $3 million is Hunter’s value mostly in the clubhouse or what he can bring to the plate he did get some big flies when he did play in Texas last season

#4 In a San Francisco Chronicle poll of 500 voters in Oakland 62% of them said the current site should be at the Coliseum for the A’s, 29% of those polled wanted to see the A’s move to Jack London Square. Most of those polled said the Coliseum site is more practical because of it’s land space, parking, freeway access and BART.

#5 MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred has made it clear that if the Oakland A’s do not get a new stadium built at Howard Terminal in downtown Oakland MLB will seek to move the A’s out of Oakland and move them to Las Vegas.

The Kings run out of gas in the fourth quarter and lose in Milwaukee 123-111

by Charlie O. Mallonee

The Kings entered the game on Monday night in Milwaukee with high hopes. The Bucks superstar – Giannis Antetokounmpo – was ruled out the game because he wanted to be with his new-born son (who we all expect to be the number one overall draft selection in 2038). Without “the freak” on the floor, the Kings knew they had at least a fighting chance versus the powerful Bucks.

The Kings (21-32) fell behind early, and it looked like it might be a walkover game for Milwaukee (46-7) even without Giannis. At the end of the first quarter, the Bucks held 38-24 lead.

Sacramento rebounded in the second quarter. The Kings outscored the Bucks 34-19 in the second period behind the 13 point barrage by Harrison Barnes. Barnes went 4-for-4 from the floor with all three of his 3-point attempts finding their mark. He also converted both of his free throw attempts. The Kings went to the locker room at halftime with a 58-57 lead.

The two teams went into an epic battle in the third quarter and went toe to toe. The Kings outscored the Bucks 32-31 in the quarter and held a 90-88 advantage at the end of 36 minutes.

The Bucks started the final quarter with a 13-0 run and never looked back. Milwaukee went on to outscore the Kings 35-21 in the fourth quarter as they fell 12 points short when the final buzzer sounded.

Top scorers

  • Khris Middleton and Eric Bledsoe were the leading scorers in the game scoring 28 points each
  • Harrison Barnes was the Kings top scorer with 23 points

The Glass Cleaners

  • Bucks All-Star Khris Middleton made it a double-double game by pulling down 11 rebounds
  • De’Aaron Fox and Nemanja Bjelica grabbed eight rebounds each for the Kings

Dropping Dimes

  • De’Aaron Fox was the game’s assist leader with 11 which gave him a double-double game
  • Khris Middleton and Eric Bledsoe dropped eight dimes each for the Bucks

Up next

The Kings will be back in action on Wednesday night in Dallas.

The Bucks will travel to Indianapolis to play the Pacers on Wednesday night.

Heat snap three-game losing streak down Warriors 113-101

photo from sfgate.com: The Miami Heat’s Duncan Robinson (55) takes a jump shot over the Golden State Warriors Marquese Chriss (32) in the first half of Monday night’s game at Chase Center in San Francisco

By Jerry Feitelberg

San Francisco- The Golden State Warriors gave a warm welcome to their former teammate, Andre Iguodala, Monday night at the Chase Center. Andre spent six years with the Warriors. The team went to the playoffs six times and won three NBA titles during his time with the team.

The Warriors showed a retrospective before the start of the game. Klay Thompson had the honor of talking with Andre before the start of the game. Iguodala, in his second game with the Heat, tried to keep his return to the Bay Area in perspective. “I haven’t had a chance to let it be something that is overwhelming,” Iguodala said. “I just see it as another game on the schedule. It’s more important for the team, so it’s actually helping me, if not allowing me, to not let it seem like a different type of situation.” Iguodala was greeted with a rousing ovation from the crowd when he checked into the game in the first quarter.

However, there was still a game to play. The Heat, coached by Eric Spoelstra, who is in his 12th year in Miami, had lost three in a row. The team was buoyed by the return of Jimmy Butler. Butler missed the last two games with a right shoulder strain.

The only time the Warriors led in the game was when Marquese Chriss made the first basket of the game. It was all Miami from that point on. The Heat led by ten 20-10 about two-thirds of the way in the first quarter. The Warriors were ice cold from the field. The W’s went on a 10-4 run to finish the quarter trailing 24-20. Draymond Green connected on a three. Jordan Poole also made a three. Jeremy Pargo made the next two baskets to tie the game at 20. Miami scored the last four points in the period.

The Heat overpowered the Warriors in the second period. They increased the lead to twenty-one 57-36. The Warriors could not do anything at either end of the court. Miami finished the first half leading 62-43. Jordan Poole led the Warriors with 12. The Heat’s Jae Crowder, who came to Miami from the Memphis Grizzlies, led his club with 16. Jimmy Butler had 13.

It looked as if it was going to be a blowout for the Heat. However, the Warriors, led by Damion Lee and Andrew Wiggins, got the offense going in the third quarter. After Miami scored the first two points of the quarter, the Warriors turned the tables as they went on a 13-0 run. The Warriors cut the Miami lead to four after an Eric Paschall three to trail 79-75. Iguodala returned to the court and that allowed Miami to increase the lead to eight 83-75.

The Heat took control of the game early in the fourth quarter. They shut down the Warrior offense and led 100-82. It was a 15-2 run that put the Heat in the driver’s seat. The Warriors could not catch up. Damion Lee played well but the Warriors just were overmatched. The Heat wins 113-101.

Game Notes and Stats- Damion Lee led the W’s with 26 points. Andrew Wiggins had 18, Marquese Chriss 17, Jordan Poole 12, and Eric Paschall 9. The Warriors shot 39% from the floor. They mad 11 threes in 34 attempts. The Heat outrebounded them 45-40. The Warriors committed 17 turnovers.

Jimmy Butler had a double-double with 21 points and 10 boards. Jae Crowder finished with 21. He made four threes. Douglas Robinson had 17. Robinson’s specialty is shooting threes. He connected five times Monday night.

Andre Iguodala scored two points and had 5 rebounds in 17 minutes of action. He was +25 while on the floor.

The Warriors’ Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond  Green are among the finalists for the 2020 men’s Olympic basketball team.

The Warriors travel to Phoenix to meet the Suns Wednesday night. The game will start at 6:00 pm. It will be the last game before the break for the NBA’s All-Star game weekend. The game will be played in Chicago.

Flames Burn Sharks 6-2, Tkachuk Dives and Dazzles

photo from sfgate.com: Calgary Flames’ Mark Jankowski, top right, celebrates after scoring a goal against San Jose Sharks goalie Aaron Dell, bottom left, during the second period of an NHL hockey game, Monday, Feb. 10, 2020, in San Jose, Calif

By Matthew Harrington

SAN JOSE–The Calgary Flames fourth line and power play were lethal Monday night at the SAP Center, with the Flames topping the host San Jose Sharks 6-2. Matthew Tkachuk scored a highlight reel goal, each member of Calgary’s fourth line scored and the Flames converted on three of six power play opportunities. Erik Karlsson and Brent Burns scored for San Jose. Aaron Dell made 31 saves, but the Sharks were outshot 37-36 in the loss.

Calgary had a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes thanks to Milan Lucic’s sixth goal on the man advantage and goals from fourth liners Tobias Rieder and Zac Rinaldo. Karlsson scored his 6th goal of the year with 7:13 left in the period to cut the lead and Brent Burns scored a power play goal on their lone opportunity 4:51 into the second. Calgary’s third bottom liner scored halfway through the second on a backhanded for a 4-2 Flames lead.

Matthew Tkachuk arguably took a dive early in the third period, then scored a goal that will surely be the talk of the league tomorrow morning. Much like his OT winner in Nashville earlier in the year or Tomas Hertl’s fourth goal against the Rangers years ago, Tkachuk pulled the puck between his legs and fired top shelf for a 5-2 lead. Mikael Backlund added a goal just six minutes away from the end of regulation for the 6-2 final.

The Sharks’ league-leading penalty kill was put to the test, sending a man to the box six times. Lucic, Tkachuk and Backlund all scored for a 50% PK conversion night for the Sharks. San Jose will have a while to think about this contest, they won’t play again until Friday against Winnipeg in the Great White North.

Cal Bears podcast with Morris Phillips: Utes completely shutdown Golden Bears offense from start to finish 60-45

photo from newsday.com: Utah forward Timmy Allen (1) celebrates after scoring against California during the second half of an NCAA college basketball game Saturday, Feb. 8, 2020, in Salt Lake City

On the Cal Bears podcast with Morris:

#1 Morris the Bears (10-13) tallied their lowest point total for 2019-20 with a 60-45 loss in Utah (14-9) and Bears head coach Mark Fox tried to explain how to fix the offense that looked like they recovered in games against Stanford (16-7), OSU (14-9) and Oregon (18-6).

#2 When you look at the miniscule number of only 45 points scored was it a matter of Utah’s ability to shut down all of Cal’s offensive efforts and playbook or Cal just went right back to the former offense they were before the Stanford game?

#3 The Utes Timmy Allen who led Utah with 21 points said after Saturday night’s game that he was stress free, that he could almost do whatever he wanted on offense does that speak to Cal’s lack of stopping Utah’s offense or Allen really was that good to do whatever he wanted with the basketball

#4 The Bears Matt Bradley had only 13 points on Saturday night he at times was well covered and couldn’t take the kind of shots he normally takes

#5 The Bears go back to the drawing board this time they go back to Berkeley and face the Arizona schools first this Thursday against Arizona (16-7) and then against Arizona State (15-8) on Saturday can they get back that old mojo they had before they went to Utah?

AT&T PEBBLE BEACH PRO-AM: Resilient Taylor pulls through to take title

sfgate.com photo: Phil Mickelson (left) and Nick Taylor (right) confer during the third tee of the final round at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am on Sunday

By Jeremy Harness

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Despite leading throughout, Nick Taylor had a few things working against him on Sunday.

A prevailing wind that particularly showed its teeth in the afternoon, not to mention a defending champion with virtually all of the crowd support and a history of catching guys from behind to win major titles.

Taylor endured the cold, hard Sunday afternoon winds and battled through a tough stretch on the back nine to pull away with a wire-to-wire victory at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, the second win of his PGA Tour career and the first since his rookie year of 2014-15.

“It was an incredible week,” said Taylor, who became the first Canadian to win this event. “I felt like I read the greens so well this week. I don’t think it’s going to sink in for at least another few days. To win, at such an iconic place, is amazing.”

He and Phil Mickelson, who has won this event five times, including last year, went toe-to-toe for the first six holes and struggled through the first five holes of the back side as the increasing winds came into play. However, it was Taylor who persevered by making clutch birdies at the 15th and 17th holes to seal the win.

Mickelson began the day one stroke behind Taylor, but he soon tied things up at the par-5 second hole, when he hit a brilliant shot out of a greenside bunker and rolled in the ensuing two-footer for birdie.

That lead didn’t last long, however. Two holes later, Taylor made a 13-footer for birdie to re-claim the advantage.

He then got on a roll, making an 11-footer for birdie at the par-3 fifth, moments after Mickelson stuck his tee shot four feet from the hole, a putt that he would make. Mickelson kept the heat on Taylor at the par-5 sixth, making it to the green in two shots before two-putting for birdie.

Taylor, however, again one-upped Mickelson. He parked his second shot into a greenside bunker but then holed out for an eagle to increase his lead to two. He found the bunker again at the par-3 seventh, but the ensuing sand shot wasn’t nearly as good, leaving him with a 13-footer.

As he had done all week, Taylor was able to find the hole to save par and keep his lead intact.

Both guys had their issues at the par-4 eighth, as Taylor could not get up and down from the sand and wound up with a bogey. Meanwhile, Mickelson’s short game let him down at the par-4 eighth, as after going over the green with his approach, his chip shot rolled past the green before being able to chip it on.

He then missed the ensuing bogey putt and, therefore, surrendered another stroke to Taylor. He played the next four holes at one-over, and he just could not get back on track.

The wind really picked up in the afternoon as the last groups hit the back nine, and the gusts, which were measured at up to 34 mph, had a significant effect on the scores. Even Taylor, who had been unflappable through the first three rounds, started to leak oil. He played holes 11 through 14 at four-over – including a double at the 14th – to give a sputtering Mickelson a lifeline.

Mickelson, however, was not able to generate any momentum after a birdie at the 10th. He dropped shots at the 12th, 14th and 16th holes, and when Taylor chipped in for birdie at the 15th, the tournament essentially belonged to Taylor.

“It was extremely difficult because you have the wind that kept swirling in and then down, and you had the greens that were very firm,” Mickelson said. “It was a hard day, (but) Nick played better than I did.

“He holed a couple of great shots, and he just really played some great golf.”

Kevin Streelman, who won the Pro-Am portion of this event along with All-Pro wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, also put himself in contention for the individual title, shooting a four-under round of 68 and finished in second place and leap-frogging Jason Day in the process.

Beginning the day in a tie for fourth, Streelman eagled the uphill par-5 sixth, and after dropping a shot at the eighth, he began his assault on the back nine. He was one of the few players unaffected by the heavy wind, recording four birdies against only one bogey on the final nine holes.

“We just ham-and-egged it perfectly, to be honest,” Streelman said of his partnership with Fitzgerald, who has spent his entire career with the Arizona Cardinals. “He made some nice birdies, a few pars. I kind of had to carry him at the end there, (but) he kind of had to pick up a few holes.

“I just love this guy. He’s a great man, and we had a lot of fun out there.”

Day, who began his final round three shots back and in third place, could not get fully on track on Sunday. He got off to a nice start, rolling in a birdie at the second hole, but he soon hit the skids, dropping a shot at the fourth as well as the fifth.

After a birdie at the sixth, he bogeyed the 11th and suffered a damaging double bogey at the par-3 12th. To sum up how his day was going, he threw his hands up in relief after a birdie at the par-5 14th. He birdied again at the 15th, but he stumbled again with back-to-back bogeys and he finished in fourth, eight shots behind, after a three-over round of 75.

“The way the greens were, it can make you look like a pretty big fool out there sometimes,” Day said. “I had four three-putts on the back side, so obviously, it was disappointing the way that I putted because I actually hit it pretty decent.

“Overall, I’m happy about the week, but also I wish I would have given it more of a chance.”

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary podcast: Pete Rose How do you like me now?

washingtonpost.com file photo circa 1989: Former Cincinnati Reds manager Pete Rose is questioned over betting on baseball in the Reds dugout before a game in 1989 at Riverfront Stadium

Pete Rose: How do You Like me Now?

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

Amaury Pi-González

Amid the controversy over the sign-stealing scandal, which followed the steroids-era,it is fair to say that Peter Edward Rose, also known as “Charlie Hustle”, Pete Rose, who played in Major League Baseball from 1963 to 1986, might be “looking good” today. Rose hit 4,256 hits more than any other player. He gambled but only on his own team winning as a manager. Ty Cobb ended second in hits with 4,191 and nobody alive today is close to 4,000 hits.

The question today: Is it time to let Pete Rose into Cooperstown? I believe so. I know baseball ultimate sin is gambling, and there are lots of degenerate gamblers all over, many go to Las Vegas to bet on baseball games, but nobody has 4,256 hits. Charlie Hustle was always on base, played for 24 Years (10 of those years 200 plus hits) 3,562 Games,15,890 Plate Appearances,14,053 at Bats. Only one season he struck out over 100 times. Total strike outs for Rose in those 24 seasons:1,143. This strike out category is very similar to Ted Williams and Joe Dimaggio, two of the greatest pure hitters in history. I will render my verdict at the end, the way I see it as if I was a juror.

Twenty-nine years have gone-by since 1991 when the Baseball Hall of Fame formally voted to ban those “permanently ineligible” list from induction. Those players were previously excluded by informal agreement among voters. Pete Rose admitted in 2004 that he bet on baseball and on the Reds. The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum and Major League Baseball are two different entities. However (as of today) the Hall of Fame states that no one on Major League Baseball’s ineligible list can be inducted into Cooperstown. So this means Pete Rose is out.

Hypocrisy? MLB has changed their attitude toward gambling. On November 27,2018 they announced that MGM had become its “official gaming partner”. I know people that bet on different legal sites in the US, the Fantasy Draft attracts a lot of sports betting fans, they have fantasy players on their list and is very popular, specially with the younger crowd of fans. And isn’t that what MLB wants? To bring young people back to baseball?

If it sounds confusing, mixed signals. It is. At the end is baseball that will have to deal with this, with the changes in the culture we live in. I do not have the answer. That is for the “moral philosophers” out there that examine the nature of ethics and foundation of good and back character in our society. Not to mention we are now in the robotic era and social media.

One last question, before my verdict. What stops somebody that stole signs from betting on those games they knew they had the edge?

My verdict: Put Pete Rose in the Hall of Fame, as a player and put an asterisk on his plaque as a manager. And stop fooling yourselves.

Hasta la Vista!
