The Kings also played the Timberwolves on Tuesday night beating the Kings 134-120. On Wednesday, the Kings managed to beat the Timberwolves 128-125. Before we talk about Wednesday’s game, let’s talk about Tuesday night’s game also against the Timberwolves.

Flashback Tuesday: The Kings took on the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday night. That game didn’t go well. Going up against the worst team in the NBA the Kings were blown out 134-120. The story of the game was the defense. The Kings allowed the Timberwolves to score 35 or more points in three if the four quarters. One major takeaway was evident in the loss. That takeaway is that if the Kings ever want to compete for the playoffs they will need to play significantly better defense.

Wednesday game recap: The Sacramento Kings were set to take on the Timberwolves on the second night of a back-to-back at 7 PM PST in Sacramento.

In the first half, it was up and down for the Kings. The first quarter saw the Kings punish the Timberwolves by putting up 44 first-quarter points. The Timberwolves only managed 34 points in the first quarter. Harrison Barnes knocked down three 3-pointers in the first quarter to jumpstart the Kings offense.

In the second quarter, the Kings also outscored the Timberwolves 26-25. The Kings didn’t dominate as they did in the first quarter, but they did hold the lead. The Kings would head into halftime leading 70-59 looking to get the win.

In the second half, the Kings played up and down. The third quarter saw the Kings blow the lead with the Timberwolves scoring 39 points compared to the Kings 25. It would come down to the fourth quarter.

The Kings held the Timberwolves to 27 points in the fourth quarter and managed to score 33 themselves to take the win at home 128-125. Buddy Hield and De’Aaron Fox came up clutch with a 3-pointer and free throws respectively. The Kings were led by De’Aaron Fox with 30 points in the game. Karl Anthony Towns led the Timberwolves with 26 points.

The San Jose Sharks beat the Minnesota Wild 4-2 in San Jose Wednesday. Rudolfs Balcers, Ryan Donato, Nikolai Knyzhov and Evander Kane Scored for the Sharks, while Martin Jones made 26 saves for the win. The Sharks defense generated five points in the game. Kirill Kaprizov and Mats Zuccarello scored for the Wild, and Kaapo Kahkonen made 29 saves in the loss.

After the game, Sharks Head Coach Bob Boughner talked about the Sharks defensive game:

“I liked how aggressive we were in the d-zone, jump in and check. We didn’t give much, you know, we blocked shots. I thought we were really physical tonight, you know, and yeah, we played a lot in the o-zone. That is the blueprint for how we want to play on most nights and every night.”

Sharks Captain Logan Couture talked about what they need to do to carry this success forward:

“We’ve just got to keep playing the way we are. I thought we defended pretty hard and we created a lot of offense. We could have had more than the three we scored, or the fourth with the empty-netter, but a lot of good looks, I think our game’s in a good spot right now.”

In a scoreless first period, the teams each got credit for 10 shots. Evander Kane took three of those shots for the Sharks. Each team had one power play. The Wild had one shot on their power play and the Sharks had two on theirs. The Wild won 60% of the first period face-offs.

The Sharks got the scoring started in the second period, at 4:41. Rudolfs Balcers caught a pass from Tomas Hertl just as he arrived in front of the blue paint. He did not slow down as he stopped the puck on his backhand, then swept it around Kahkonen’s skate. Assists went to Hertl and Brent Burns.

The Sharks made it 2-0 at 9:22 with a power play goal. Brent Burns shot the puck right up the middle. Kahkonen stopped it but left a rebound. Ryan Donato was there to gather it up and tuck it under the goaltender. Assists went to Burns and Mario Ferraro.

That was the only power play for the second period. The Sharks outshot the Wild 14-9. The Sharks improved in the face-of circle, winning 55% of them.
Kirill Kaprizov cut the Sharks lead to 2-1 at 8:23. He carried the puck at speed from below the goal line, past one point to the other before taking the shot, which went past Jones on the far side. Carson Soucy got the assist.

The Sharks’ third goal started when Rudolfs Balcers carried the puck onto the zone. It was knocked off of his stick but Tomas Hertl was right there to get it back and pass it to Erik Karlsson. Karlsson found Nikolai Knyzhov just coming across the blue line, Knyzhov let the traffic settle into place in front of the net before shooting it past Kahkonen’s glove. Assists on Knyzhov’s first NHL goal went to Karlsson and Hertl.

Kaprizov knocked Logan Couture off the puck at 12:18. While Evander Kane was giving Kaprizov a piece of his mind about the hit, Ryan Hartman went after Kane. All the skaters on the ice converged after that but the result was just two minor penalties: cross-checking to Hartman and roughing to Kane.

The Wild made it 3-2 with their net empty and 12.1 seconds left in the game. Kevin Fiala took a shot from the point with three skaters blocking Jones’ view. The puck went off of Mats Zuccarello and in. Assists went to Fiala and Jared Spurgeon.

Evander Kane scored from just outside the Sharks’ blue line, into an empty net with one second left in the game. It was his sixth shot of the night.

The Sharks won the third period face-off battle 9-6. Each team had a power play in the period, with the Sharks taking three shots and the Wild taking two. In overall third period shots, the teams were tied at 9 each.

The Sharks next play on Friday against the Kings in Los Angeles at 7:00 PM PT.

San Francisco Giants podcast with Morris Phillips: Belt getting ready for season after rough off season; Dubon’s got glove; plus more

San Francisco Giants first baseman Brandon Belt has come a long ways since this Sep 22, 2020 photo was taken as he was playing first base against the Colorado Rockies. He had a tough off season but is ready for opening day 2021 (AP News file photo)

#1 Morris lets take a look around camp and see what impresses, starting at first base with Brandon Belt who had bone spur surgery, Mono, and Covid-19 during the off season. Hasn’t seen much action at the plate as he joined spring training in progress.

#2 Giants outfield coach Alyssa Nakken said that Mauricio Dubon’s defensive catch of the Milwaukee Brewers Avisail Garcia’s was a Golden Glove last Thursday. The Giants are looking for some big things from Dubon in the outfield this season.

#3 Austin Slater had homered for three games straight Wednesday through Friday. Slater in 22 at bats is 1.480 OPS. Giants manager Gabe Kapler says Slater will most likely be facing a lot of left handed pitching this season.

#4 The Giants might going to shop for a shortstop, they have two solid shortstops with Brandon Crawford and Dubon but will try to find a shortstop with some defense and experience.

#5 Giants team president Farhan Zaidi said that while the club plans to have the players vaccinated there are no firm plans in place as Zaidi said he’s waiting for word from the league when to proceed.

Headline Sports podcast with Barbara Mason: Beavers doing Pac 12 proud; plus Giants and A’s spring training updates

Oregon State Beavers head coach Wayne Trinkle celebrates the Beaver’s victory over the Loyola Chicago Ramblers on Sat Mar 27, 2021 at Indianapolis (AP News photo)

#1 Barbara, the Oregon State Beavers (21-12) are doing the Pac 12 proud with a huge win on Saturday over Loyola Chicago Ramblers (26-6) 65-58. The Beavers dominated in the first half had a close second half with the Ramblers. The Beavers play the No.2 Houston Cougars (28-3) tonight in another attempt to advance.

#2 Former San Francisco Giant Pablo Sandoval 34, has made it to the Atlanta Braves opening day roster. Sandoval in spring training was undeniable hitting .375, with three doubles, four RBIs, in 15 exhibition games. The surprising thing about it no one expected Sandoval to make it and he was a non roster invitee.

#3 San Francisco Giants third baseman Evan Longoria who had suffered an inflamed heel that prevented him from playing third base was back at the hot corner on Saturday against the Seattle Mariners. Longoria as a designated hitter has left little to the imagination hitting .360, nine hits, four home runs, and ten RBIs.

#4 Turning to the Oakland A’s manager Bob Melvin is trying to decide what order his relievers will be coming into ball games, he’s got Trevor Rosenthal as the closer, left handers Jake Diekman and Adam Kolarek are candidates to pitch in the eighth inning, Yusmeiro Petit, Sergio Romo, JB Wendelken, and Lou Trivino are expected to pitch later innings but Melvin is still thinking it through what situations and what innings.

#5 Barbara look for A’s starter Cole Irvin he might replace Mike Fiers who will start the season on the injured list due to an inflamed hip. Fiers recovery is coming along but look for Cole who pitched six innings of shutout ball on Friday night striking out ten hitters on the Los Angeles Dodgers line up which consisted mainly of starting players.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: The Experience of Broadcasting during a Pandemic

The Experience of Broadcasting during a Pandemic

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

Here are the memories that were created last season while broadcasting in a pandemic. Many folks have asked what was the experience like, so here it is. During an abbreviated 60-game schedule last year, broadcasters did not travel and most called the games from their home parks.

Some had the luck of having equipment installed by their respective teams at their homes. This set-up allowed them the best commute of all, maybe a total of 20-50 steps to their “home park.” Getting to the Oakland Coliseum to do the games for the Athletics on Spanish radio was nothing new.

I drove like I always do when doing a home game. In the past during certain games when the Giants, Yankees, Red Sox and teams that usually sell-out, create an unusual amount of traffic, I would give my driving a rest and take BART, round-trip to broadcast the game. Because no fans were allowed, the commute coming and going was very “light”.

Arriving at the Coliseum about three hours prior to first pitch (like I always do) the whole parking lot was deserted. About 10,000 empty parking spaces and no tailgate parties. There is nothing like arriving at the Coliseum when everyone has their “tailgate cooker” in full progress.

The smells of smoked meat are just phenomenal. The team and MLB modified the way media entered the Coliseum. There were the standard ten questions or so regarding Covid, taking you temp, and then the normal checking of media work bags and the metal detection gates.

As the season progressed, the thing was the Covid-test would be later and of course during this time, the vaccines were in development…and don’t forget to mask up. Taking the elevator to the broadcast level of the Oakland Coliseum, the protocol was not to allow more than two people at the same time.

The operator was wearing a mask, there was a receptacle with hand sanitizer, (inside the elevator), for everyone to use. The Coliseum and the Oakland A’s did an excellent job. There we many places where big bottles of hand sanitizer were available.

As I got to the broadcast level and the door opened, it was an eerie feeling. The whole place was quieter that most hospitals. The broadcast level usually seats other radio reporters and media writers local and visiting. None of that was allowed.

The only people were us, doing the actual Oakland Athletics broadcasts, radio and television, English and Spanish, engineers, a producer or two and that was it. One or two A’s media staff. Maybe 12 people occupying this whole level, which during a well covered game, could seat dozens.

Also a very small crew on the Coliseum scoreboard, PA announcer and technical people area. This is a busy place during the operations of a regular baseball game in normal times. All the announcers had plenty of separation. Most announcers had their own booth. With the exception of the “cardboard fans”, it was 56,000 empty seats per game.

That is a weird experience. It is something I could never get used to. There was no access to the field to see batting practice or going inside dressing room for interviews. This was all conducted via Zoom at a specific time assigned by the A’s media department.

Technology controlled everything. Once the home plate umpire call of Play Ball! I could hear him (and I mean hear him) like he was next to me, in an empty park you can hear stuff you never heard before. Our production used a crowd noise track during all the games, to recreate the sound of fans.

The PA announcer would call the name of each player coming to the plate, like during regular times; the music will play pre-game and during some parts of the games, and very loud. And the game was the game.

MLB has scheduled to open the season on April 1st.The A’s will open at home against the Astros and then the Dodgers. Most teams are expected to allow fans, maybe 25 percent of capacity and the hope is by the All-Star break (mid July) maybe things will be close to normal times. But for broadcasters, the season will begin just like 2020, no traveling, separation, same safety measures, mask and so on, with the good news of some fans in the stands.

That is progress. I have re-created games that were played thousands of miles away of where I was calling the game, including a couple of Caribbean World Series for FOX sports in English. Those games were called from FOX studios in the LA area while the games were taking place in México and Venezuela.

There was no pandemic or national emergency then, but the ‘powers to be’ producers, chose to do those types of productions because they were more cost effective, and in our business you do what is necessary to survive.

Any major league announcers should be able to re-create the game no matter what the conditions or situations are. If they complain, then they should be sent back to the minors. None of my experiences can compare to the 2020 Season. 2020 is one for the records books. 2020 was like broadcasting in the Twilight Zone.

Stay well and stay tuned.

Warriors grind out a 123-111 win over the Timberwolves

By Jerry Feitelberg

SAN FRANCISCO — The Golden State Warriors downed the Minnesota Timberwolves 123-111 Wednesday night at the Chase Center.

The Warriors had their hands full with a young Minnesota team. Their point guard, D’Angelo Russell, and their best player, Karl-Anthony Towns, were not in the lineup. Russell is recovering from a quadriceps injury, and Towns has to sit out due to the NBA protocol for the coronavirus.

Timberwolves head coach Ryan Saunders was ready to play defense Wednesday night. The Warriors, no strangers to playing great defense, had to work hard to finish the first quarter with a meager two-point advantage 23-21. Warriors forward, Kelly Oubre Jr., had to go to the bench as he picked two fouls in the first minute of the game. Warriors head coach Steve Kerr picked Kent Bazemore to replace Oubre. Bazemore responded by scoring seven of the Warriors’ first nine points.

Oubre returned to start the second quarter. He knocked down 16 points to lead the Warriors to a 58-51 lead at the end of the first half. Oubre had the highest-scoring quarter of his career. He was also a force on defense. He had two steals and a blocked shot. The Warriors needed Oubre’s offensive performance as Steph Curry was ice cold in the first half. Curry had two points on 1-for-9 shooting.

Warriors star rookie, James Wiseman, kicked in with 14 points. Wiseman was 3-for-3 shooting 3-pointers. Andrew Wiggins had 8.

Timberwolves rookie phenom, Anthony Edwards, showed the Warriors and the NBA why he was the number one pick in the NBA Draft this year. He finished with 15 points and connected on three 3s.

As they have done so many times over the past six seasons, the Warriors won the third quarter 37-24. As everyone knows, Steph Curry can’t be bottled up all night. Curry started to make buckets. Damion Lee made two 3s, and Andrew Wiggins continued to drive the lanes to help the Warriors break open the game. The Warriors were leading 79-67 when they went on a 13-0 run to lead 90-67. They finished the third quarter with a 20-point advantage 95-75.

The Timberwolves continued to play hard. The Warriors refused to wilt. The Timberwolves cut the lead to 12 points, 112-100. The Warriors responded as they built the lead back to 16 points, 116-100. Steve Kerr pulled Curry off the floor. The Warriors held on to win 121-111.

Game Notes and Stats: With the win, the Warriors are 10-8 for the season. The Timberwolves are 4-13.

James Wiseman had a career-high 25 points to lead the team in scoring. Kelly Oubre had 20 points, nine rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot in 20 minutes of playing time. Andrew Wiggins continued to play well at both ends of the court. Andrew tallied 19 points and three boards. Steph Curry had 16 points, six rebounds, eight assists, and he made four three. Curry has made a three-point in 80 consecutive games. Draymond Green’s line was six points, six rebounds, and eight assists. Kevon Looney recorded ten rebounds in 11 minutes. Damion Lee had a season-high 17 points. Lee knocked down four threes.

The Warriors shot 53% from the floor and held the Timberwolves to 42.5%. The Timberwolves made 14 3s, while the Warriors made 15. The Warriors moved the ball well and recorded 32 assists.

One stat that Steve Kerr would not like is the number of turnovers committed. The Warriors turned the ball over 21 times. That number will get Kerr very grumpy.

Up Next: The Warriors play the Suns in Phoenix on Thursday night. The game will start at 7 pm PT.

San Jose State Spartans game wrap: Gaels Win Sixth In A Row Handily Beating San Jose State 96-61

The St Mary’s Gaels forward Sam Fotu (42) drives on San Jose Spartans center Hugo Clarkin (5) on Fri Dec 11, 2020 at McKeon Pavilion in Moraga (smcgaels.com photo)

By Barbara Mason

Friday night the San Jose Spartans took on the St. Mary’s Gaels at McKeon Pavilion. St. Mary’s came into the game with a 5-1 record while San Jose’s record is 1-0 due to the cancellations they have experienced this year. The Gaels are riding high winning five games in a row. They most recently beat the University of Texas at EL Paso. Their only loss came at the hands of Memphis 73-56.

The San Jose Spartans handled Fresno Pacific by the score of 87-79. A win tonight for the Spartans would mean a second straight victory as well as their first win over the Gaels since 2000.

The Spartans would be looking for another explosive performance by sophomore Omari Moore and Richard Washington who had 38 points against Fresno Pacific. All eyes will be on this power duo. Right now the Spartans are the No. 1 ranked team in the nation in defensive rebounding.

The Spartans will be without 4 players in this game although it has not been announced that any of them have covid. Seneca Knight is one of those players which is a blow for San Jose. The Spartans were looking at a very real challenge in this game.

The Gaels will be highlighting Tommy Kuhse, one of their offensive leaders, who had 24 points in their latest win against UTEP. St. Mary’s will also be counting on Matthias Tass and Alex Ducas to carry their offense. Right now the Gaels are a high-scoring team recording 72 or more points in each of their last four games. Head Coach Randy Bennett is 7-0 against San Jose.

It was a very tough start for the Spartans trailing from the start of the game. It was all St. Mary’s as they took a 57-27 lead into the locker room. Nine different Gaels scored in the first half shooting 68 percent which gave them a 30 point lead.

In the first half the only Spartan that had shot in double digits was Richard Washington with 13 points. It was the dominating Gaels that had two players in double digits: Matthias Tass with 11 and Dan Fotu with 11. The Gaels had a combined 25 points off the bench while the Spartans only had 7.

Midway through the second half the Spartans were trailing 77-42 and they struggled to get anything going against the powerhouse Gaels. The Spartans got some nice play from Washington and Moore with 35 combined points but it was the Gael’s bench with the combined 30 points of Tass and Fotu that did San Jose in. The final score was a shocking 96-61. San Jose will be facing Cal Poly Sunday with tip off at 1:00.
