By Amaury Pi-González

SAN FRANCISCO–On Sunday, the 18th of September, Fiesta Gigantes at Oracle Park, home of the Giants, was not stopped by the rain storm that invaded the Bay Area.

Prior to the game the José Uribe Sportsmanship Award is awarded to Wilmer Flores a San Francisco Giant Hispanic player who best exemplifies the character and Sportsmanship, of the late José Uribe, a former San Francisco Giant shortstop from the Dominican Republic who was a member of the 1989 National League Champion, San Francisco Giants who went on to play the Oakland Athletics during the Loma Prieta-Earthquake stricken World Series.

Wilmer Flores was all smiles as he received the José Uribe Award inside the Giants dugout prior to facing the LA Dodgers during the last game of the year against the all-time rivals.

Wilmer is the most versatile player for the Giants this season and recently agreed to a two-year $13 million contract extension, including a mutual option for the 2015 season. He was gracious and humble as he accepted the José Uribe Award. The museum thanks Bertha Fajardo her staff and all invoked in making this possible.

The Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum Hall of Fame was founded in San Francisco in 1998, is committede to preserving the history and profound influence that Hispanic players have had on America’s favorite pastime.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: So What About the Angels Now?

Los Angeles Angels owner Arte Moreno is selling the franchise he’s owned since 2003 but the question remains who will buy the club? (Orange County Register file photo)

So What About the Angels Now?

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

2022 was the year the Los Angeles Angels were expecting to be in the race. Mike Trout the best and most consistent player in baseball is already on his 13 season but he has only played three games in the postseason.

This week Trout fell just shy of tying the record of eight consecutive games with a home run held by Dale Long (1956), Don Mattingly (’87) and Ken Griffey Jr. (’93). Angels began this season with the reigning MVP in 2021 the incredible Shohei Ohtani.

The Angels began the season with the best two baseball players in the world, yet they are going to finish closer to the cellar than to first place. Arturo (Arte) Moreno is currently exploring selling the club. He has owned the Angels since 2003 when he purchased the franchise for $180 million.

Moreno, of Hispanic roots made his fortune with his company Outdoor Systems, the largest outdoor advertiser in North America, the billboards you see on the roads and other places.

Moreno owns around 250,000 properties in the US, Canada and México. His frustration is understandable, while he has spend lots of money to build a contender. Days after he bought the club in 2003 from the Disney Co.

Moreno signed super-star Vladimir Guerrero, who is now in the Hall of Fame, to the biggest contract ever, that of Mike Trout whom Moreno signed in 2019 for $426.5 million, the largest contract in professional sports history.

In May of this year, Anaheim City Council members cancelled the Angel Stadium land sale following an FBI corruption probe into ex-Mayor Harry Sidhu, who resigned right away after the cancellation. A serious FBI investigation is not what owner Arturo Moreno was hoping for as the City of Anaheim void their Angel Stadium agreement.

Who will buy the Angels, if Mr.Moreno agrees to sell? Successful owners that already are in sports, like Mark Cuban or Joe Lacob, among others are the front runners. The LA Times Bill Shaikin asked Mr. Joe Lacob if he was interested in buying the Angels. “Can’t answer this question that fast. We look at good opportunities.”

We know that Mr.Lacob wanted to buy the Oakland A’s, but to buy something you need somebody on the other side that wants to sell, and the current A’s owner is not interested in selling. The last question most are asking (whomever buys the Angels) do they keep Shohei Ohtani and how much do they pay him, considering Mike Trout got close to a half-billion dollar contract.

The last time somebody did what Ohtani is currently doing, it was back in 1933, The Bambino. As of today the LA Angels are averaging 30,679 per game while the other team 25 miles north on Interstate 5, the LA Dodgers 47,936, which is número uno in baseball.

Note- The Los Angeles Dodgers became the first team to clinch a playoff spot on Monday. They won their ninth National League West Division tittle in the last 10 years, meanwhile the LA Angels are in limbo.

#3 The A’s were able to get some help from Ramon Laureano who hit two home runs after replacing rightfielder Chad Pinder.

Jaime Jarrín in the Home Stretch of his Career

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

Amaury Pi-González

Jaime Jarrin has been the Spanish Voice for the Los Angeles Dodgers for over six decades. He told me about this current 2022 season: “mi carrera como cronista radial terminará definitivamente cuando realize mi última transmición, ojalá sea en la Serie Mundial y terminar mi ciclo como empezé con los Dodgers ganando la Serie Mundial en 1959 contra los White Sox” Trans: “my career as a radio sportscaster will definitely come to an end when I broadcast the World Series and end my cycle which started when I began with the Dodgers winning the 1959 World Series over the White Sox”.

Did you ever envision such a lengthy and successful career when you first began? “nunca ni en sueño crei que recibiría tantas bendiciones en mi carrera, vine a este país a ampliar mis horizontes esperando únicamente ubicarme y seguir trabajando como todos los inmigrantes que llegan a este incomparable y generoso país”. Trans- “never even in a dream I believe I would received so many blessings in my career, I came to this country to broaden my horizons, only with the hope of settling down like all the immigrants that come to this incomparable and generous country”.

Jaime’s career began prior to his arrival to the United States. “mi carrera en radio comenzó en 1951 cuando a los 16 años de edad obtuve mi primer trabajo frente a un micrófono como periodista radial en la emisora HCJB La Voz de los Andes en mi nativa Quito, Ecuador. Trans- “my radio career began in 1951 at 16 years of age when I got my first job in front of a microphone as a radio journalist on HCJB La Voz de los Andes in my native, Quito, Ecuador”

I think I will miss the game that I am in-love with, but most of all I will miss the journalist and colleagues, most of all my brother and adviser Vin Scully. The local and national media in English as well as in Spanish, they have been very generous, especially during this year of my farewell; my eternal gratitude”.

What does Jaime Jarrín plans to do after his retirement? “seguiré afiliado a los Dodgers como un embajador por lo menos por dos años, pero mi carrera radial termina en este 2022”. Trans- “for at least the next two years I will continue my affiliation with the Dodgers as an ambassador, but my broadcast career ends this 2022”.

I have known Jaime Jarrín since the mid-1970’s. I have always had the utmost respect and admiration for Jaime. It is truly a pleasure to have known him for a lifetime, especially that World Series in 1977 (that is 45 years, for those scoring at home).

As recent as the late 1990’s I shared the booth broadcasting with Jaime for the Spanish radio networks in the US and Latinamerica. A consummate professional and truly a gentleman. I wish him the very best.

I have told Jaime many times, he was the luckiest man that I have known in broadcasting, why? He was fortunate enough to have spent his whole career with the LA Dodgers, a team that has always appreciated the value and importance of the Hispanic market.

Not now, when in LA Spanish is spoken as frequently as English and the Latinos are the largest minority in the country, with ‘at least’ 65 million people, but from the very beginning in the 1950’s, when it was not “politically correct” to speak Spanish.

The Dodgers are very close to clinching their divisional title. As of today they have a 94-42 record, best in the major leagues. Starting this Friday when the Dodgers open a weekend series in San Diego against the Padres, Jaime Jarrín will be calling all the games (like he always does) home and away on radio KTNQ 1020AM Los Angeles. MLB Baseball Hall of Fame announcer, Jaime Jarrín is now in the home stretch of his career.

Felicidades Jaime.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: Time to check the pulse of Giants fans

Time to Check the Pulse of Giants fans

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

Last year at the beginning of September it seemed we had 5 million Giants fans in the Bay Area. The Giants overachieved with 107 wins in 2021 season, it was a ‘once in a lifetime’ type of season where just about every Giants player had their best season of their careers, veterans like catcher Buster Posey on his last season was the only Giants starter in the All Star Game in San Diego, also Brandon Crawford and Kevin Gaussman were selected to the ASG.

The 2021 season is now the record for the franchise with 107 wins beating their previous best of 103 wins in the 1993 season. That tends to happen in the always unpredictable game of baseball. September 2021 there were Giants fans all the time on Facebook, Twitter, all over the place, but not this year.

The obvious place to check is Oracle Park, where this season the Giants are #13 in attendance among the 30 teams, with an average of 30,609 per game. The great success of the previous season translated to thousands of tickets sold in advance for this year, a normal occurrence for teams in baseball.

Giants have an excellent marketing department and they do promote the team and their stars as good as anybody, plus winning three World Series still in the memory of their fans, and those they recruited during those glory seasons.

Some baseball philosopher once said “winning is the best deodorant”. A lifelong Giants fan and friend of mine in his 70’s told me about the Giants this season; “I didn’t expected them to win 100 games again, but I also expected more from this team” and continued “It confirmed my suspicion that last season was like finding water in the desert, a…fluke”.

The last time the San Francisco Giants had a super star (prior to the Buster Posey era) was Barry Lamar Bonds, but since then, the team has lacked that type of excitement for the local fans. We have all heard the rumors that they might go after Aaron Judge, who is on a pace to break the American League home-run record of 61 by Yankee Roger Maris during the 1961 season.

Aaron Judge hails from Linden, a very small town in the San Joaquin Valley between 1 to 2 hours away from San Francisco. The Yankees and Judge avoided arbitration with a 19 million deal for the 2022 season this past June.

A real Giant by size 6 foot 7 and about 275 pounds said about the agreement that it did not create any momentum toward a long-term extension, when he said “No. We got this one done. I was happy about that,” he told MLB.

Judge left the door open for the possibility of playing for another team, but if he breaks the Roger Maris AL home run record it will be tough for the Yankees to let him go. He is looking for at least a $300 million multi-year contract.

Aaron Judge should be the MVP of the American League this year, but in baseball one man doesn’t make a whole team. The Giants have some big time personnel decisions to make this winter and for the 2023 baseball season.

Even if they open the checkbook and sign Judge. As of today Fangraphs gives the Giants a 0.01% odds of making the postseason. In other words and like Don Meredith used to sing during the NFL national broadcast with Howard Cosell; Turn Out The Lights…The Party’s Over!

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: Tony LaRussa out indefinately as White Sox manager; Sox say LaRussa to see heart specialist

Chicago White Sox manager Tony LaRussa comes out of the dugout during the top of the second inning at Camden Yards in Baltimore against the Baltimore Orioles on Thu Aug 25, 2022 (AP News photo)

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

Chicago White Sox Hall of Fame manager Tony LaRussa is out indefinitely with heart related medical issues. A series of tests are underway at this time. Tony’s Bench coach Miguel Cairo, will continue to fill in for Tony. LaRussa will be seeing a heart specialist in Phoenix according to the White Sox as announced on Wednesday. LaRussa is scheduled to see doctors at the Mayo Clinic.

LaRussa is one of 22 managers in the baseball Hall of Fame. As of today No.2 in total wins in history for a Hall of Fame manager with 2,846 wins, only Connie Mack (Philadelphia A’S) is ahead of Tony. Mack won an incredible 3,731 games. LaRussa’s Chicago White Sox continue to under-perform. Picked to win the AL Central by most ‘going away’.

As of today the White Sox are resting in third place with a record of 63-66, six games behind the division leading Cleveland Guardians and 7 1/2 games behind for a wild card berth in the American League. According to FanGraphs the Chicago White Sox today have a dismal 2.4% odds of advancing as a wild card team.

In 33 years as a manager, Tony La Russa guided his teams to three World Series titles, six league championships, and 13 division titles. Tony and Sparky Anderson are the only two managers in history to have won World Series titles in both leagues, Tony with the A’s and Cardinals, Sparky with Cincinnati and Detroit. Tony’s first World Series title came here in the Bay Area as manager of the Oakland A’s during the 1989 World Series, as the A’s swept the San Francisco Giants in four games, during the Loma Prieta earthquake.

San Diego Padres Manny Machado (right) points at pitcher Nick Martinez after the Padres picked up a win against the Kansas City Royals at Kaufman Stadium in Kansas City on Sat Aug 27, 2022 (AP News photo)

On That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast:

#1 Amaury, Juan Soto and the San Diego Padres are in San Francisco. Soto entered Monday night’s game hitting .254 with 24 home runs and 52 RBIs. The Pads are really looking for some big things from the slugger.

#2 Manny Machado is staying way ahead of the pack with his hitting slugging .304 with 24 home runs and 81 RBIs. Machado hits behind Soto so pitchers will be careful what to throw these guys.

#3 The story on the Giants Brandon Belt is a big question mark. Belt has had knee problems and most recently his left knee. He’s had to have his knee drain multiple times and his career is in question.

#4 Turning to pro football Sun Sep 11 the San Francisco 49ers are in Chicago to face the Bears. 49ers head coach will be looking for a winning effort from quarterback Trey Lance. How ready is Lance in this first game.

#5 Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr is preparing for their game on Sun Sep 11 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. Carr who did not play in any of the pre season games says he’s ready. Carr had worked in one on one sessions with opposing teams each week which is considered better than facing pre season action.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: Chasing No.61 — You Be The Judge

New York Yankees’ Aaron Judge, right, launches his 50th home run of the season as Los Angeles Angels catcher Matt Thaiss, center, and home plate umpire Quinn Wolcott watch in the top of the eighth inning at the Big A in Anaheim on Mon Aug 28, 2022 (AP News photo)

Chasing No.61 — You Be The Judge

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

On October 1, 1961 New York Yankee outfielder Roger Maris hit his home run No.61 of the season breaking the (at that time) major league record for most home runs in one season of 60 established by Babe Ruth in 1927. Today Yankee center fielder Aaron Judge is challenging Roger Maris record as well as making a bid to become the Most Valuable Player in the American League.

Roger Maris still holds the home run record for one season in the American League and another Yankee, Aaron Judge today, 95 years later is on a pace to break that record with his first-place team.

The major league record is that of Barry Bonds of 73 home runs in 2001. However because Bonds played during the much maligned ‘steroids era’, a period of time when a number of players were believed to have used performance-enhancing drugs, resulting in increased offensive numbers, Barry Bonds record is kind of hollow, compared to the historic 61 of Roger Maris.

Bonds was not alone during that era, there are other “regular suspects” like Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, José Canseco, Rafael Palmeiro whose records are also considered suspicious and therefore have lessen their impact. As a result these players with Hall of Fame statistics so far have fallen short of induction.

Beginning this Tuesday August 31, the Yankees have 33 games left this season. The Yankee have a very even schedule the rest of the way; 17 games on the road and 16 at Yankee Stadium.

The race for the MVP in the American League will be between two men, NY Yankees Aaron Judge and LA Angels Shohei Ohtani, who won it last year. In 2017 many believe that during his rookie year Aaron Judge was robbed of the MVP as he hit for .284 with 52 home runs and 114 runs batted in.

José Altuve of the Houston Astros won the MVP that season hitting for a .346 average with 24 home runs and 81 runs batted in. By the way that 2017 was also the last of the three batting titles Altuve has won so far.

I believe (and I do not have a vote) the MVP voting will be close this season. I am from the school of thinking that it should go to the player that helps his team win the Division; the Yankees are on the way to do that, while the Angels are finishing in fourth place this season.

The mere fact that Ohtani is a unique two-way player, (the most relevant since Babe Ruth) the Japanese super star, a very good hitter and a very good pitcher is going to seduce many writers to vote for him again. Let’s face it.

The national baseball media has a love affair with the Japanese super star. A relatively new baseball stat WAR, wins against replacement figures big today in the major leagues and applies to these two guys, when it comes to the MVP.

As of today Aaron Judge 50 home runs is on a pace to hit 62 home runs this year and therefore establish the new American League record. Can he do it? You be the Judge!
