The face of baseball today is Japanese mega-star Shohei Ohtani, a two-way player with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the most famous two-way player in the history of baseball since Babe Ruth (1914-1935). Still, the first Japanese player to play in the United States in Major League Baseball was Masanori Murakami, who pitched for the San Francisco Giants 1964-1965.

Murakami was the first Asian-born baseball player to come to America and play in the Major Leagues. The Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum Hall of Fame’s President Founder and CEO Gabriel “Tito” Avila, Jr. met in Japan with Masanori Murakami and Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame representatives.

The Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame first opened in 1959 adjacent to Korakuen Stadium in Tokyo. Later, in 1988, the hall of and museum moved to a new site within the Tokyo Dome. Gabriel “Tito” Avila, Jr. represented The Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum Hall of Fame https://hhbmhof.com/ in this goodwill trip to the land of the rising sun.

This 2024 MLB season began on March 20 in South Korea when the Los Angeles Dodgers played a 2-game series against the San Diego Padres. Shohei Ohtani was the “main attraction,” and thousands of fans arrived early to look at the world’s #1 baseball player.

The Hispanic Baseball Museum was founded in San Francisco in 1998. Since its foundation, this museum hall of fame has traveled and exhibited in multiple cities across the United States, at baseball parks, libraries, expositions and community baseball events, from New York to San Francisco and in between.

Mr. Avila Jr envisions the HHBMHOF traveling to Japan, with an exhibit of the great history and richness of Hispanic / Latino baseball. “This was a goodwill trip and I am thrilled specially and meeting such icons as Murakami and other Japanese players and executives representatives in the world of baseball”. The Founder President and CEO of the HHBMHOF also were very impressed as Japanese baseball officials gave him a personal tour of The Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame.

Many Hispanic / Latinos are playing today in the Japanese Baseball Leagues however, the first Hispanic / Latino player to have ever played in Japan was Roberto “Chico” Barbon a Native from Matansas Cuba was an Infielder from the 1954 -1965 for the Hankyu Braves and Kintetsu Buffaloes of the Pacific League, Nippon Professional Baseball. Barbon played 11 seasons.

Latin America and Japan are united by their love of the game of baseball. The Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum hopes to work with Japan for the love of the game that continues to grow in popularity in Asia and all around the world. The Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum and Hall of Fame, has been around for 25 1/2 years and is looking forward to their first permanent location in the San Francisco Bay Area.

#1 Amaury, Alameda County’s sale on half it’s share at the Oakland Coliseum is due to go through on May 14 when the Oakland A’s are scheduled to make the final payment of the property at $85 million. However a lawsuit has been filed in Alameda County court for Sep 24.

#2 The lawsuit filed by Communities for a Better Environment who are a California non profit environmental health group say that team owner John Fisher in the sales agreement ignored the Surplus Land Act which is mandated by state law.

#3 The A’s who purchased half of the Coliseum site back in 2019 in the event that if their new ballpark site at Howard Terminal falls through they could go back to the Coliseum. The A’s later claimed the Coliseum was unfit for baseball but the A’s plan to continue with the purchase.

#4 The A’s are currently in negotiations to sell their half interest to Oakland group the African American Sports and Entertainment Group. AASEG is also negotiating with the City of Oakland to purchase their half of their interest to develop, residential, commercial and sports.

#5 Ruby Acevedo an attorney for the environment group CBE said the county could argue that the SLA is regularly ignored statewide however Acevedo state there is case law that the counties would take demand letters seriously. CBE is asking for the county to engage in housing development for affordable housing. Affordable housing was an issue with Fisher when it was a requirement for his ballpark village at Howard Terminal.

In this topsy-turvy world of the Oakland A’s regarding their relocation, many things have lingered like floating on air, like a basketball going up thrown by Stephen Curry for a 3-point basket. That is Mr. Joe Lacob, the owner of the Golden State Warriors, an NBA franchise evaluated today at over $8 billion. On July 15, 2010, owner Chris Cohan sold the Warriors to Peter Gruber of Mandalay Entertainment and his partner Joe Lacob for a then-record $450 million.

Mr. Lacob has had a standing offer to buy the Oakland A’s for years. Years ago, Lacob had a deal to buy the A’s, then owned by Stephen Schott, for $180 million. However, Bud Selig, then the commissioner, approved the sale to one of his friends and college fraternity brothers, Lew Wolff and John Fisher, in 2005.

Last week, it was announced that the Oakland A’s had hired Galatioto Sports Partners to track an investor (or several) for the $500 million needed to build the A’s proposed new ballpark in Las Vegas. According to sources familiar with the matter but not authorized to speak publicly, that money could be exchanged for share/part ownership.

I believe that if Mr.Lacob bought the A’s, he would keep them in Oakland and find a way to build a new stadium for the team right here in Oaktown. How long can the “standing offer” to buy the A’s be there for the A’s owner(s) to take or decline?

Considering his steady good management, their success, and Joe Lacob’s community involvement with the Warriors here in the Bay Area, I cannot see anybody more qualified to buy the Oakland Athletics at this time and keep them in Oakland than Mr. Joe Lacob. And I believe that still could happen, maybe faster than you think.

And this is why I say to A’s world, “do not forget about Joe Lacob”.

When most baseball fans think about Charlie O. Finley, owner of the Kansas City and then the Oakland A’s, they return to the three consecutive World Series he won for the Swinging A’s in 1972,73,74. By winning three consecutive World Series, Finley’s A’s became only the second team to date that accomplished such a feat. During their dynasties, the New York Yankees were the only other team.

Reggie Jackson, the centerpiece for those winning teams, said of Charlie O. Finley, “He was great for baseball, years ahead of his time,” Reginaldo Martínez Jackson, a Hall of Fame outfielder, played for the A’s from 1967 to 1975. Charlie O.

Finley’s innovations in baseball are legendary, from Charlie O, the mascot Mule of the team, to pioneering the idea of night games in the Postseason play/World Series to many other ideas that baseball adopted, innovations, including all sorts of promotions.

During the Kansas City years, Mr.Finley had one of the most significant music bands in history, The Beatles, who performed in Kansas City as part of one of many Charlie O.Finley promotions. Time Magazine included the Beatles in its list of 100 most influential people in the 20th century.

I interviewed Nancy Finley who tells me that Charlie (her uncle) sent her the 45 LP “I Wanna Hold Your Hand”, while her mother repeatedly played that song in the house. She tells me, “Dad (Carl Finley), the minority owner and General Manager, and Charlie were sitting with the group in a conference room waiting for performance time.

Dad said they were “a group of polite young men.” Spoken like a High School Principal. Charlie O.Finley left his mark in baseball and in American history, truly an innovator who brought the A’s the Gold and Green uniforms, the first team to let the players have facial hair, the Ball Girls, he was strong proponent of Inter league Play, decades before MLB adopted it in 1997.

Also, there is Night Playoff baseball, plus the Designated Hitter and Runner. He suggested the “alert ball,” also called the orange ball, to make it easier for the fans to follow the baseball because white was not that easy to see, and although that was never adopted, it was talked about.

I do not believe Mr.Finley would like any clock ruling in the game, the “free runner” at second base when a game spins into extra-innings, and some other radical changes during the last few years. Undoubtedly, when A’s Charlie O. Finley brought The Beatles, he left his mark on US pop culture forever. He was a visionary a showman and a man for the ages.

Major League Baseball continues flirting with México, playing regular season games down México way. This weekend, the Houston Astros and the Colorado Rockies will play two games in the Mexico City Series at Estadio Alfredo Harp Helú with 20,062 capacity. This will mark the seventh time MLB plays a regular season series in Mexican territory.

It will be the first international game for the Houston Astros since 2019. The Rockies also played in Monterrey during 2019 but in Spring Training. México City’s population is over 9 million, and the metro area population of México City is over 22,000,000 people. If baseball is smart “if” they should consider México City for expansion.

These are the potential cities that have shown interest for an expansion team, some are being considered.

Major League Baseball will expand from 30 to 32 teams in the coming years. The only uncertainties are when the process will formally begin and when the two new franchises to be named will begin play. The last time MLB expanded, ahead of the 1998 season, the Tampa Bay then-Devil Rays and Arizona Diamondbacks each had to pay $130 million to join the club. We feel confident the price has gone way up.

#1 Amaury, lots of talk about the Chicago White Sox problems all around, lack of attendance, team doesn’t have enough hitters and pitching to win games, Sox have won only three games this season, they have won only one road game out 12 so far this season, and are in dead last place in the AL Central.

#2 Amaury, San Francisco Giants pitcher Blake Snell is out with a left strained adductor and on the 15 day IL. Snell was a scratch on Wednesday’s day game at Oracle Park and was replaced by starter Ryan Walker in a bullpen game. Snell has been rocked in his last two starts Apr 14th vs. Tampa Bay giving up six hits and seven runs and Apr 19 against the Arizona Diamondbacks giving up nine hits and five runs.

#2 After getting swept in Cleveland in three games the Oakland A’s came to New York and won the first game of the three game series at Yankee Stadium on Monday on a Zack Gelof ninth inning two run homer. There are just some games that the A’s pull a rabbit out of the hat.

#3 It’s not often you get to see the A’s throw a shutout on the road but A’s starter JP Sears pitched six inning of shut out ball giving up three hits and striking out seven batters. A’s relievers Lucas Erceg and closer Mason Miller also kept the shutout in tact.

#4 Amaury if you had to point to one thing where the A’s improved a little this season and have had some success over the last few weeks what one thing would it be, JP Sears pitching, Zack Gelof’s hitting or the return Esteury Ruiz?

#5 Amaury, the San Francisco Giants are fourth in the NL West with the Dodgers, Padres, and Diamondbacks in front of them in the standings that said the Giants are only two games out of first place.

If you think that under owner John Fisher, this is the first time the A’s planned to move out of Oakland, you are mistaken; in 1970, two years after moving the A’s from Kansas City to Oakland, owner Charlie O Finley talked to Toronto representatives about moving the team to Canada.

A few years later, Finley’s team won three consecutive World Series in Oakland, 1972-73 and 74, a feat only accomplished by only one other franchise in history, the New York Yankees, who are well known for several dynasties on the way to winning an unprecedented 27 World Series today, it seems both sides, the one against the A’s moving out of Oakland and the one in favor of the A’s moving to Las Vegas, are now fighting inside the legal system arena.

Many people would say that this arena usually moves at a much slower pace than the actual game of baseball. Some cases take many years to get to court and then a decision. Schools over Stadiums is not an A’s fanbase group, it’s not made up of Oakland residents, but a political group with grassroots in Nevada that has filed a second legal effort to block Nevada from spending taxpayer funds to build a stadium at the current site of the Tropicana resort on the Las Vegas Strip.

Months ago, the State of Nevada legislature passed the bill, which authorized them to use $380 million in funds towards the A’s new stadium in Las Vegas. Local Oakland fan-based groups have supported Schools Over Stadiums, which they see as an ally in the fight to keep the team in Oakland.

Most recently, the Oakland A’s filed a motion to intervene in this case, aiming to halt Schools Over Stadiums’ efforts. The A’s attorney’s job is to propel the A’s entirely out of Oakland (with a temporary 3-year residence in Sacramento) and to set shop permanently in Las Vegas, Nevada, by 2028. Luckily for everybody, the A’s case has no statute of Limitations. You might say so.

However, for those cynical fans who consider moving the team out of Oakland a “crime.” Here is some ‘Law talk’: The statute of limitations sets a deadline for initiating legal proceedings in a dispute. The length of time allowed varies depending on the severity of the offense and the jurisdiction where it is being disputed. Cases involving severe crimes, like murder, typically have no time limit.

Under international law, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and genocide have no statute of limitations. Two Proponents of statutes of limitations believe they are needed because, with time, substantial evidence may be lost, and witnesses’ memories can grow foggy.

Let’s stretch our collective memories and imagine if today MLB had a Commissioner like Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis, who was elected Baseball’s first Commissioner in 1921.

What would Judge Landis rule on the Athletics relocation? We will never know.

Here is one of Judge Landis’s famous quotes:” Baseball is something more than a game to an American boy; it is his training field for life’s work. Destroy his faith in its squareness and honesty, and you have destroyed something more; you have planted suspicion of all things in his heart”.

The dynasty of NBA titles in 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2022 has ended as we move into a period of uncertainty, huge decisions, and big changes for the team. In the NBA, there is a trend of the ‘no 10th seeded team advancing to the playoffs from the Play-In’.

The Golden State Warriors were eliminated when they lost 118-94 in Sacramento to the Sacramento Kings; the score shocked many. Suddenly, Sacramento has become sort of a villain when it comes to Bay Area sports.

Oakland groups opposing Oakland A’s owner John Fisher from selling the team and moving them to Sacramento (and ultimately to Las Vegas) beginning next year and at least from 2025 to 2027 have pledged they will also travel to Sacramento to continue what they have called “the summer of SELL” some more more radical A’s fans are calling it “The Summer of Hell”. I do not think Mr.Fisher will sell, not yet, but once and if the team moves to Las Vegas, then (about selling) like they say in Vegas “all bets are off”.

Although the Warriors have nothing to do with the world of the A’s, it is interesting that California’s Capital is now focused on major league sports. But, as far as the Golden State Warriors, in the 2024-25 season, they have lost some of that “Shine” they used to enjoy.

But they know nothing will last forever. What is very active and present in Sacramento is Mr.Vivek Ranadivé, owner of the Sacramento Kings and the Sacramento River Cats, and he was a thrilled man last night. As far as the Warriors? Fans should thank them for the Memories, as they might have a different team next season. Some huge decisions must be made in the “not too far” future.

Warriors superstar Stephen Curry had an honest quote after his team’s defeat in Sacramento. “We all got to look at ourselves in the mirror and figure out what we individually can do better. In those deciding moments of a game, better decisions, better discipline to not foul, all the little things that we know impact winning. That’s the only way we’re going to get out of this little funk where you’re playing hard, and you have nothing to show for it.”

Curry is an honest man who, this month said he is thinking of running for President of the United States. This is quite a statement since honesty is not abundant in today’s political world. As the famous quote goes, “We know a politician is lying when his lips are moving.”

I can appreciate the Warrior’s success; I was a witness as a broadcaster in the 1990s for the Warriors, broadcasting all their games in Spanish home and away with the team (by the way, I was the only Spanish broadcaster they ever had).

Although they had inspiring players, like Chirs Mullin and good teams, they never enjoyed such a championship run as the 2000s Warriors. So, congratulations to owners Joe Lacob and Peter Guber for their success; they deserve it. Unlike other owners, I have never heard one Bay Area fan complaining about the Warrior’s current ownership. How could you?

#1 Food and beverage concessionaires at the Oakland Coliseum have been told in a 99 worded company letter they had better keep their opinions about lay offs, the A’s relocation to Sacramento, or any business related issues regarding Aramark to the media or reporters. Aramark also said that “violations of this policy are subject to discipline up to and including termination.”

#2 Aramark who serves food and beverages to nine Major League Stadiums and is a Forbes Fortune 500 holder and is the 50th largest employer in America. Is the issue of the lay offs a huge concern for Aramark and is putting a muzzle on the Coliseum concession employees a prevention from any negative publicity because of the layoffs after this last season in Oakland for the Aramark employees.

#3 Amaury, Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao could face a recall. Currently Oaklanders are trying to put together a petition drive to get a ballot initiative to get Thao recalled. If successful and its long shot could a new mayor try and get together with the Oakland A’s and try and work something out for a stadium if the Las Vegas deal falls through.

#4 Mayor Thao has surmounting complaints from City of Oakland residents who want her removed because of the firing of Oakland Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong, the huge crime that has forced retailers particularly in downtown Oakland and Chinatown to either fold their businesses or move, and the Airport corridor has seen car break ins and crime at their local restaurants including the high profile In and Out Burger and Denny’s close and shutter their businesses. Now with the recent rent offer by the City of Oakland and the Coliseum Joint Authority of $97 million for the A’s to rent the Coliseum was so inflated that it chased off A’s team president David Kaval who the next day chose to have the A’s play their interim years in Sacramento. Many critics said this was poor handling of business from the City of Oakland and the appearance of gouging on the City’s part.

#5 In the event of a new Oakland Mayor takes over for a recalled Thao that new mayor could call the A’s back to the bargaining table if Vegas were to fall apart and offer the A’s a sweetheart deal. Here is the scenario come back to the Coliseum from Sacramento for $3 million a year. Offer to bridge the gap that the City and A’s were apart on for Howard Terminal and that money some $97 million (sound familiar) and the money will be paid back on taxes on ticket sales and concessions and parking.

#6 The current plan to have the A’s in Sacramento if Las Vegas fails won’t work from the marketing and sponsorship aspect. What works for the NBA Sacramento Kings in advertising might not work for the A’s who will see that money get divided in half when they and if they build a 30,000 seat stadium in Sacramento. The A’s would be playing in the 20th TV market while it’s likely they can get the support but owner John Fisher’s TV revenue will also come down from what he’s getting in Oakland at $70 million versus what he would get in Sacramento around $35 million.

#7 If you follow the money whether it’s in Las Vegas or Sacramento the A’s lose. TV money always rules the day even if the A’s were to get good crowds they leaving Oakland will hurt their pockets by walking away from their $70 million TV contract with NBC California. If Oakland changes it’s mayors maybe the A’s could consider changing their minds.

#1 Oakland A’s pitcher JP Sears put the old baseball saying good pitching beats good hitting to use going into the seventh inning with a no hitter against baseball’s World Champs the Texas Rangers. Sears left after surrendering a hit in the seventh.

#2 Sears had everything working for him he didn’t give up a run walked three batters and struck out five innings.
