Stanford Cardinal basketball podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: It doesn’t get easier for the Cardinal they face OSU on Thursday

AP file photo: The Stanford Cardinal forward Reid Travis pictured here during warm ups in LA against USC Trojans Jan 5th. Travis had to leave last Saturday’s game against the Washington Huskies due to a recurring shoulder injury

The Cardinal who rebounded over the weekend they really handled Washington State by wide margin at Maple Pavilion last Thursday. Reid Travis was expected to play and he did play and scored 17 points which is his season average. The Cardinal got that game over the Cougars it was the Cardinal’s first win in the Pac 12 and their ninth win overall.

Then they played Washington on Saturday and this is a game that Stanford was expected to win. They had a 21 point lead but Travis injured his shoulder again and was out after playing for 12 minutes and the Huskies made  comeback in the second half of that game and made it close and the Cardinal’s Mike Humphrey picked up the slack with a team leading 18 points.

The Cardinal watched as their defense broke down after holding a 21 point lead and let one get away on Saturday to their guest the Washington Huskies. If it wasn’t for Michael Humphrey coming to the rescue with his 18 points there would be no tenth win for the Cardinal to the relief of Cardinal head coach Jerod Haase. Humphrey led Stanford in scoring with 18 points and he closed the gap on the Huskies with eight points in the closing three and half minutes of Saturday’s game to help Stanford get the win 76-69.

Stanford Cardinal Saturday game wrap: Cardinal holds on to win second straight 76-69; Humphrey leads comeback with 18

Just when it looked like it would be a struggle for the Stanford basketball team to win a single game in the Pac-12, it has suddenly found itself on a winning streak.

Two days after blowing out Washington State, Stanford used a brilliant first half and was able to hold on in the second half and stave off a feisty Washington team, 76-69, to win its second consecutive game inside of Maples Pavilion Saturday night. Stanford head coach Jerod Haase pointed out that Reid Travis playing only 12 minutes it set the tone of a struggling night in which the Cardinal who had a 21 point lead disappeared, “We were very poor offensively,” Haase said. He pointed out that his team didn’t have a single assist in the second half. “I think if we had scored some, that would have continued to energize our defense,” he said. “But it was really a total collapse. … There were times we didn’t get back in transition. Our overall energy dipped.”

Michael Humphrey, a junior forward who has stepped into his leading role quite nicely this season, led the Cardinal with 18 points while making seven of his 11 shots from the field. He also pulled down 10 rebounds and blocked three shots in the process. “I always need to play with that pissed-off edge,” Humphrey said. “I don’t know if I got hit or something like that. It’s finding something that motivates you.”

Marcus Allen, a senior guard whose career has been a bit of a disappointment thus far, chipped in with 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Meanwhile, Robert Cartwright and Dorian Pickens each had 13 points apiece. Cartwright, however, struggled to shoot the ball on Saturday, making only five of his 14 shots, but he did hand out four assists.

Even better news is that Reid Travis is back in the fold after being injured recently. He made his return against Washington State on Thursday, and he played only 12 minutes on Saturday, scoring four points on 2-of-4 shooting to go along with three rebounds.

For Washington, Markelle Fultz led all scorers with 34 points on 12-of-23 shooting to go along with seven rebounds and three assists. David Crisp added 10 points for the Huskies, but no other player reached double figures.

The Cardinal are now 2-4 in Pac-12 play and currently sit in the ninth spot in the conference, ahead of Washington, Colorado and Oregon State, who they play on Thursday in Corvallis, Ore.

Following that contest, Stanford will then travel to Oregon to face the high-flying Ducks, who are currently 5-0 in conference play and 16-2 overall, on Saturday before heading to Berkeley to take on Cal (13-5, 4-2 Pac-12).

Matt is joined by Stanford Cardinal (9-8) reporters Jerry Feitelberg and Jeremy Harness on Thursday’s podcast. The injury to Stanford’s Reid Travis was a huge hit for the Cardinal as he missed out on two games both games at UCLA and USC. The Cardinal were on a four game losing streak until Travis returned against the Washington State Cougars (9-7) and helped out with 17 points Thursday night.

The Cardinal got lots of offensive help in the 30 point win over the Cougars 84-54 from Robert Cartwright who led the way with 21 points and Dorian Pickens with 18 points. The Cardinal had as much as a 25 point lead on the Cougars by half time and WSU looked like they wanted to toss in the towel and call for the mercy rule at that point.

Stanford Cardinal Thursday game wrap: Stanford snaps four game Pac 12 loss streak in 30 pt victory over WSU 84-54

PALO ALTO–The Cardinal (9-8, 1-4) return to Maples Pavilion after a disappointing four game losing streak to start conference play. Sitting squarely at 8-8 entering play, they look to get back in the win column and remain above five hundred as the host of the Washington State Cougars who drop to 9-7.

In the first half. Stanford jumped out early with efficiency on offense and smothering defense. The Cardinal scored seven unanswered points before the Cougars scored a single basket. Point guard Robert Cartwright emerged from the tunnel on giving Stanford a dominating spark as he shot 7-8 from the floor, including four long balls. The team defense for Stanford was more than satisfactory. They had four steals and scored 13 points off of turnovers. The half ended with The Cardinal on top 48-23.

As the late, great Pat Summit once said: You can’t win a game in the first half, but you can lose one. That was the case in this matchup as the 25 point half time deficit was too much for Washington State. They fell in the end by 30 points after being out rebounded by 18 and shooting 32% from the floor. It was mind over matter for the Cardinal Robert Cartwright leading the team in scoring for the second consecutive game getting 21 points over WSU  “Our defense held them to very few points early in the game,” Cartwright said. “We wanted to protect our home court better than we did last time.

The Cardinal Dorian Pickens helped out with some offense scoring 18 points and Reid Travis returned for the first time since missing two games scoring 17 points. Stanford avoided a five game losing streak which would have been their fifth straight something the Cardinal have not done since 1993. Cardinal head coach Jerod Haase was pleasantly surprised by the high score gap but not by the positive progress of the Cardinal “I was surprised by the score,” Haase said “But I’m not surprised we’re making progress. We played well. I’m cautiously optimistic.”

Stanford walked away with their first conference win in five games, and progress to 9-8 in the standings.

Cal Bears basketball podcast with Michael Duca: Golden Bears back home will try to top Washington tonight

In the game against the USC Trojans the Cal Bears Ivan Rabb got the game winner in the form of two free throws  and blocked what would have been the game winning shot that would have won it for USC on January 8th. The play designed by Cal head coach Cuonzo Martin was to allow Rabb to get with USC shooter Jordan McLaughlin who got the inbounds pass and was able to get a hand on the ball and block the shot that helped result in the Bears win 74-73.

It was curious to see if Cal could put it all together on the road and this trip to LA was their first true road game of the season. The Bears were playing in hostile environments that belonged to the opponents they were not neutral environments. They did do a decent job at UCLA in a ten point 81-71 loss last week Thursday. They were down by 24 and turned that into a game.

Cal opens two home games this week with the Washington Huskies later tonight at 6:00PM and then on Saturday host the Washington State Cougars for a 1:00PM tip all at Haas Pavilion.

Stanford’s Michael Humphrey left it all on the floor on Sunday night against the UCLA Bruins as the Cardinal who were defeated saw Humphrey get a double- double, 21 points, 14 boards and he played his heart out and fouled out late in the game. The Cardinal fell behind at UCLA at half time they were down 18 points 48-30.

The Cardinal were out played by UCLA by 21 in the second half they were out manned their star forward Reid Travis was out with an injury. Travis re-injured his shoulder in practice and the Cardinal do not have a date when Travis will be ready to return. So the Cardinal have their work cut out for them to make up for his absence.

The Cardinal play host to Washington State on Thursday night at Maples pavilion.

Despite an outstanding effort by Michael Humphrey and a furious second-half comeback, Stanford fell to No. 4/5 UCLA 89-75 in a Sunday night men’s basketball game at Pauley Pavilion.

Humphrey seems to have the Bruins’ number. Last year, he had 24 points and nine rebounds in a Stanford win over UCLA. On Sunday, Humphrey bagged a career- and game-high 27 points, hitting 12 of 22 from the field.

An announced crowd of 13,659 also saw Humphrey pull down 14 rebounds for his sixth career double-double.

Robert Cartwright added 18 points and a career-high nine assists for the Cardinal, and Dorian Pickens scored 12 points – his fifth straight game of scoring in double figures.

After trailing 48-30 at halftime, the Cardinal (8-8 overall, 0-4 Pac-12) outscored UCLA 45-41 over the next 20 minutes. Stanford pulled to within 61-50 at 13:12 of the second half, The Bruins (16-1 overall, 3-1 Pac-12) outscored Stanford 28-25 from that point on.

Lonzo Ball led UCLA with 21 points, eight assists, six rebounds, two blocks and three steals. Bryce Alford scored 17 points, followed by 15 points apiece for Isaac Hamilton and TJ Leaf.

Stanford shot 38 percent (28 of 74) from the field overall, but hit 14 of 18 free throws, The Cardinal also forced UCLA into 16 turnovers. The Bruins, meanwhile, hit 50 percent from the floor (31 of 62), including 55 percent (11 of 20) on 3-pointers.

Leaf, who had six assists, grabbed 10 boards as UCLA held a 43-40 rebounding edge.

The Cardinal will try to snap their four-game skid on Thursday, when they host Washington State at Maples Pavilion.

Stanford Cardinal basketball podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: After their recent struggles Cardinal have their hands full going into USC

gostanford.com photo: The Stanford Cardinal prepare for the Southland Challenge at USC Thursday and UCLA on Sunday

The Stanford Cardinal started off the season 4-0 and now their 8-6 and that means their struggling when they got into Pac 12 play. The Cardinal have lost to four good schools Kansas, they got run off the court by SMU, they lost a close game to a very mediocre team ASU by just a few points. Then there’s the big school Arizona who came in with a 13-2 record.

The Wildcats just blew the Cardinal off the court beating them by 39 points and it wasn’t even a contest. Stanford plays at home where they’re suppose to have a home court advantage and it didn’t help. The Cardinal on offense Reid Travis scored 21 points against the ASU and was down to 17 against ASU. The player that had a career high of 35 points in the game was Marcus Sheffield.
