The scheduled game between the Stanford Cardinal and the Washington State Cougars had been canceled at Stanford Stadium as announced Friday due to a Covid-19 outbreak. The Cougars did not have the required amount of players available after a number of Cougar players tested positive.

Washington State Athletic Director Paul Chun announced Friday that the Cougars had four players that tested positive and had to be put on Covid-19 protocols and the game had to be canceled according to Chun.

The minimum amount of 53 players could not be met by the Cougars and the Cougars quarterback Jayden de Laura had tested positive and it was just as well that the Cougars packed up their gear and got on the plane for Spokane as their would be no game on Saturday as scheduled at Stanford Stadium.

The Stanford-Washington State game will be recorded as a no contest game and earlier before the Cardinal-Cougar cancelation it was announced that Arizona State and Colorado was also canceled due to Covid-19 snafu issues.

Chun made the announcement also that both universities are sad about the game cancelations, that so much work and practice goes into preparing for a Pac 12 game like this and it’s cancelation is a huge disappointment as stated by Chun, “saddened for not only our student-athletes, coaches and staff, but those within the Stanford program who have worked so hard preparing for this weekend.”

Chun said he was not even sure if Friday’s Apple Cup would be played  but added that Washington State would do everything they can to get a team together by next Friday in preparation for the contest at Pullman that it comes off without a hitch.

Stanford is scheduled to play at Cal on Fri Nov 27th the day after Thanksgiving for the Big Game at Memorial Stadium in Berkeley.

Stanford Cardinal Football podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: Struggling Stanford hosts Washington State in bid for first win of the season

Stanford Cardinal head coach David Shaw runs off the field after a loss to the Oregon Ducks on Sat Nov 7, 2020. The Cardinal prepare for the Washington State Cougars for this Sat Nov 21st at Stanford Stadium (AP file photo)

On the Stanford Cardinal podcast with Jerry F:

#1 The Stanford Cardinal (0-2) played a razor close game last Saturday for their home opener losing 35-32 against the Colorado Buffaloes in spite of the Cardinal scoring 16 points in the fourth quarter they still fell short.

#2 Cardinal quarterback Davis Mills had a quarterback keeper, worked hard throwing for 327 yards in 31 for 56 passes.

#3 The Buffaloes (2-0) running back Jarek Broussard carried for 121 yards that helped give Colorado good field position on offense and running back Sam Noyer who carried for only 36 yards and scored two touchdowns helped the offense.

#4 Likewise for the Cardinal they got their scoring mostly on the ground with running back Austin Jones and Mills who carried in for a touchdown each. Jerry do you see Mills and the Cardinal going to the ground game again against Washington State?

#5 Washington State Cougars (1-1) come to Stanford after a tough loss last Saturday 43-29 to the Oregon Ducks the Cougars did win the week before in their opener against the Oregon State Beavers (0-2) 38-28. Jerry set this game up between Wazzu and Stanford for this Saturday.

Stanford’s home-opener win streak snapped in 35-32 loss to Colorado

By Morris Phillips

STANFORD, CA–Until someone figures out Jarek Broussard and the Colorado run game, the good times could hang around Boulder for a while.

And Stanford? The physical, hard-nosed bunch always hanging around their football facility for the last decade might not be currently enrolled in school.

Stanford survived a rough first half in which they couldn’t finish anything offensively while the visiting Buffs cleaned up with their quick-hitting run game. But somehow quarterback Davis Mills and kicker Jet Toner kept the Cardinal within range, down five, 14-9.

The appearance of competitiveness disappeared quickly to start the third quarter, as Colorado struck for two touchdowns on their way to a 35-32 win at Stanford Stadium.

“Everybody’s buying in,” fifth-year senior quarterback Sam Noyer said. “Guys are having fun out there. It’s good to see that again. I haven’t seen that in a couple years.”

Noyer ran for a pair of touchdowns and threw for two more, including a 34-yard pass play to Jerry Rice’s son, Brenden that put the Buffs up 28-9 just six minutes into the second half.

Mills did his best to rally Stanford, throwing for 327 yards and a touchdown, but the senior misfired on 25 pass attempts and failed to convert 11 of 16 third down opportunities. Mills’ uneven performance was indicative of his lack of practice and game reps due to COVID testing procedures that the Pac-12 admitted this week contained errors and should not have forced the Cardinal to hold out Mills and three others that missed the opener at Oregon.

“He was in isolation essentially from Saturday afternoon until Thursday night,” coach David Shaw said of Mills. “He was able to come in and get one practice and it showed. There’s not much we could have done about it, but to say that it didn’t affect his performance I think would be inaccurate.”

Mills one-yard touchdown pass to Scooter Harrington cut the Colorado lead from as many as 19 to three with 2:45 remaining. But the Buffs salted away the remainder of the clock, allowing Stanford just 10 seconds and the final play of the game which resulted in a fumble.

The Buffs got 121 yards rushing from Broussard, and 177 yards total on 45 carries. That didn’t include a swing pass that turned into a 55-yard touchdown by Dimitry Stanley, one of several big plays where the Stanford defense was caught uncharacteristically napping.

The Stanford run game underperformed, managing just 70 yards on 21 carries, in part due to Mills needing to throw on nearly every down when their deficit grew to three scores. Still Austin Jones paltry production stood out as the sophomore followed up a 100-yard performance at Oregon with nine yards on nine carries.

The Cardinal fell to 0-2 after finishing last season 4-8, by far the worst stretch of results in the last decade under Shaw. Stanford also dropped their home opener for the first time after 12 consecutive wins.

Stanford Cardinal Football podcast with Jerry Feiteltberg: Mills and Weddington being checked if they are Covid 19 free

Stanford quarterback David Mills (15) drops back to look for a receiver during the Big Game last season against the Cal Bears on Nov 23, 2019 at Stanford Stadium (file photo from mercurynews.com)

On the Cardinal podcast with Jerry F:

#1 Jerry how big was it that Stanford’s quarterback David Mills and wide receiver Connor Weddington both missed opening week in Oregon against the Ducks?

#2 The Cardinals’ defensive end Trey LaBounty also was missing from action last Saturday as he also was positive for Covid-19. The Cardinal lost quite handedly 35-14 and missing LaBounty and the defense was a big part of that loss.

#3 As of Tuesday Stanford head coach David Shaw indicated that a fourth unnamed player has also contracted Covid. As of Wednesday the Cardinal who host the Colorado Buffaloes on Saturday have not indicated if the game would be postponed as of yet.

#4 Shaw also said he has no idea of the timeline when the players would be back but at midweek knows that some decisions have to be made soon and the Cardinal are trying to avoid postponing the game on Saturday.

#5 Last week the Cardinal had Jack West starting who threw 154 yards and third stringer Tanner Mckee who threw for 62 yards neither threw for a touchdown in the loss. The Buffaloes got by the UCLA Bruins in a shootout 48-42 in their last game last Saturday the Buffaloes can provide a lot of offense. Jerry set this game up for us.

Oregon scored 28 unanswered points over nearly two quarters Saturday at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Ore., as the Ducks rolled over Stanford 35-14 in the Pac-12 football opener for both schools.

The Cardinal (0-1) were without starting quarterback Davis Mills, who was held out of the lineup after testing positive for COVID-19 and, according to the school, having to adhere to pandemic protocols.

Defensive end Trey LaBounty and wide receiver Connor Wedington were also missing from the Stanford lineup on Saturday due to COVID-19 protocols. Wedington tweeted that he tested negative, but was contact traced.

Jack West filled in for Mills and completed 13 of 19 passes for 154 yards, with no touchdowns or interceptions. Austin Jones led the Cardinal rushers with 100 yards on 20 attempts and both Stanford touchdowns. Nathaniel Peat added 93 rushing yards on six carries.

Michael Wilson caught four of West’s passes for 35 yards, while Brycen Tremayne and Simi Fehoko each caught three passes for Stanford.

Ducks quarterback Tyler Shough completed 17 of 26 passes for 227 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Shough also carried 11 times for 85 rushing yards and a TD.

CJ Verdell was the top rusher for Oregon, finishing with 105 yards on 20 carries and a touchdown. Travis Dye ran six times for 78 yards.

Shough’s top targets were Johnny Johnson III and DJ Johnson. Johnny Johnson caught four passes for 60 yards and DJ Johnson snared five passes for 55 yards and a touchdown.

Stanford scored first on Jones’ 4-yard TD run at 4:13 of the first quarter. From there, it was all Oregon (1-0).

The Ducks tied the game at 7-7 with 1:36 left on Verdell’s 10-yard touchdown run. Oregon surged ahead to stay late in the second quarter, when DJ Johnson caught a 5-yard TD pass from Shough.

Rushing touchdowns in the third quarter by Dye (14 yards) and Shough (9 yards) put the Ducks up 28-7. Jones’ 2-yard scoring run cut Stanford’s deficit to 28-14 at 8:27 of the fourth quarter, but Oregon’s Cyrus Habibi-Liko scored on a 4-yard run, extending the Ducks’ lead to 21 points with 4:12 left.

Stanford returns home next Saturday to host Colorado (1-0). Kickoff is at 12:30 p.m.

Stanford Cardinal Football podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: Stanford’s Mills ready to throw against Oregon defense on Saturday

Stanford Cardinal quarterback David Mills (15) will be dropping back to pass at Oregon University this Saturday against the Oregon Ducks in the season opener of Pac 12 Football for both schools (file photo from Stanford Athletics)

On Cardinal podcast with Jerry F:

#1 The Stanford Cardinal quarterback David Mills will start against the Oregon Ducks in the season opener has had a good career with the Cardinal in three years he’s thrown for 1960 yards, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions.

#2 Mills has done a great job avoiding the getting picked off throwing only five times in three seasons under center for the Cardinal.

#3 The Oregon Ducks head coach Mario Cristobal has not tipped his hand as to who he will have start at quarterback on Saturday against the Cardinal. Cristobal is watching very carefully his two top choices Tyler Shough and Anthony Brown. One thing for sure it’ll keep the Cardinal guessing as they will study film on both players.

#4 Cristobal added that there’s no value in in giving up every detail in what they’re doing. So the selection of who he will start is one of the best kept secrets coming into the season opener at Oregon.

#5 Stanford head coach David Shaw enters his ninth year at the helm and has a winning record of 86-34. Shaw has had a incredible career at Stanford which includes going to the Rose Bowl twice beating Wisconsin in 2012 and losing the following year to the Michigan State Spartans in 2013.
