Tanner McKee (18) quarterback for the Stanford Cardinal hopes to not look like a deer in the headlights here he is being rushed by a Notre Dame Fighting Irish lineman on Sat Oct 15, 2022. The Cardinal take on the UCLA Bruins tonight in Los Angeles (AP News photo)

On the Stanford Cardinal podcast with Michael:

#1 One of the things they talked about all week was how quick the UCLA Bruins (6-1) line is how much time will Stanford Cardinal (3-4) quarterback Tanner McKee have and will he be forced to keep the ball at times?

#2 The Cardinal have won two games in a row and at one time they had an 11 game win streak against the Bruins.

#3 Head coach David Shaw has coached the Cardinal to five out six wins against ranked UCLA teams.

#4 The Cardinal are coming off wins against Notre Dame and Arizona State both wins were razor close. Against the Fighting Irish 16-14 and against the Sun Devils 15-14. Could they wind up pulling off a squeaker against the Bruins tonight?

#5 In McKee’s last game he threw 33-57 for 320 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions, seeing how UCLA can put the pressure on he’s going to need another 300 yard plus game with three or four touchdowns against the Bruins?

Stanford Kicker, Joshua Karty Hails as the Homecoming Hero with 5 FG’s to Edge Past Arizona State, 15-14

Stanford Cardinal kicker Joshua Karty boots a 44 yard field goal with just five minutes left in the game against the Arizona State Sun Devils at Stanford Stadium on Sat Oct 22, 2022 (AP News photo)

By Michael Roberson

STANFORD, Calf.–  The Stanford Cardinal won their Homecoming game on the mighty foot of junior kicker, Joshua Karty, as his five field goals were enough to extinguish the Arizona Sun Devils, 15-14, by a proverbial toenail.

“Yeah, it doesn’t make any sense, but as an old coaching thing that I heard a long time ago that I say sometimes too, which is like, you win one game, win the second one and make it count. That can’t just be a stand-alone game.

You have to go on and win the next one to prove that it wasn’t a fluke.”  Stanford HC David Shaw on team’s consecutive wins.

Stanford initially took the lead the first five minutes of the game, on a 44-yard field goal by Joshua Karty.  Unfortunately, that didn’t last long, because Sun Devil’s graduate running back, X Valladay scampered for a 15-yard touchdown.  Karty kicked another field goal (36yd) within the last two minutes of the first quarter, 7-6 ASU.

Not satisfied with the one-point advantage after 15 minutes of action, Arizona State scored less than a minute into the second stanza, on a 39-yard bomb pass from junior quarterback, Emory Jones to sophomore wide receiver, Elijhah Badger..! 4-6 ASU.

The remaining 14 minutes of the half had both quarterbacks (Jones & Tanner McKee) exchanging interceptions, and Arizona State’s freshman kicker, Carter Brown missed a field goal with 1:00 on the clock.  The Cardinal avoided being down by double-digits at the half. 14-6 ASU.

Joshua Karty converted his third field goal (44 yards) late in the third and his fourth (36 yards) early in the fourth quarter, to bring Stanford within two points in the final quarter.  14-12 ASU
With the game still in the balance, “Mr. Homecoming ” used his right foot again to put out the Sun Devils’ fire, with a 47-yard game winning boot.

Joshua minimized the magnitude of the big annual game.

“Oh, I try to keep the external dynamics kind of out of my head, like in a game. It was nice that it was homecoming, but for me, when I woke up this morning it was another game to stay locked in as usual.”

“But just glad I could contribute to the team and get a great team win today.”  Added Karty.

Junior quarterback Tanner McKee threw for an impressive 320 yards on a whopping 57 attempts, but didn’t get into the endzone and threw an interception.  He was just happy for the win.

The crucial victory marks the Cardinal’s first Pac 12 win of the season, and third overall.  Stanford (3-4) heads down to the “City of Angels” next, to take on the #9 UCLA Bruins (6-1), Saturday, October 29.

Coach Shaw is ready for the challenge:

“Looking forward for this team to come back and see who’s healthy this week from today, and then put together a good plan, have our guys get ready to go down to Southern California and fight, and looking forward to this week.”

The Stanford Cardinal win their Homecoming contest by a single point (15-14): however, former player, Bryce Love was inspirational in the victory with his presence on the Farm, according to Coach Shaw.  Cardinal Alum, Christian McCaffery being traded to the San Francisco 49ers also gives him comfort and pleasure, with him now now being nearby the campus and football program.

Heart-Breaking Stanford Loss to Oregon State In Final 13 Seconds – 28-27

Heart-Breaking Stanford Loss to Oregon State In Final 13 Seconds – 28-27

By Barbara Mason

The Stanford Cardinal ((1-4) have been struggling losing last week to the Oregon Ducks in a route 45-27. Tonight the Cardinal took on the Oregon State Beavers (4-2). Two teams with their backs against the wall made for some fiery emotional moments in this game.

Oregon State had a nice drive to start the game but came up empty when Atticus Sappington missed a 40-yd field goal failing to take an early lead.

Stanford quarterback Tanner McKee completed seven passes in their first drive in the quarter, one for 31 yards to Benjamin Yurosek. The Cardinal drove down to the Oregon State one -yard-line and Casey Filkins rushed for one yard and the touchdown giving Stanford a 7-0 lead.

Oregon State put together a time consuming drive taking their possession into the second quarter. The Beavers Jack Colletto rushed for one yard and the touchdown. The extra point was good and this game was tied 7-7.

Stanford was looking for a fast start in this game and it all came together in the second quarter. The Cardinal extended their lead to 10-7 when Joshua Party kicked a 47 yard field at 8:44. With the clock winding down in the half, Tanner McKee found Bryson Tremayne for 21 yards and the touchdown. Stanford took a 17-7 lead into the locker room at half-time. The Cardinal were well on their way to breaking their nine game losing streak against conference opponents.

Cardinal quarterback Tanner McKee had a sensational first half completing 14 of 19 passes for 171 yards and one touchdown.

Stanford went three and out to start the third quarter. The Beavers’ first possession of the quarter stalled on the Stanford 27 yard line and they had to settle for a 40-yard field goal. The Beavers now trailed by a touchdown 17-10.

After a slow offensive start in the quarter for the Cardinal, the Stanford defense really stepped up sacking Beaver quarterback Ben Gulbranson for a third time in the game. Stanford took over on downs setting up a 37 yard pass from McKee to Brycen Tremaine for a touchdown extending the Cardinal lead to 24-10.

Stanford would take that lead into the fourth quarter. Oregon State’s Silas Bolden would make the catch of the game, a 21 yard pass from Gulbranson in the end zone to start the quarter. The Beavers two point conversion attempt would fail and at 14:50 the Cardinal had a 24-16 lead.

Oregon State refused to back down and with 5:45 left in the game Damien Martinez romped for 43 yards to the end zone followed by a two-points conversion. The Cardinal were clinging to a 24-22 lead.

Stanford extended their lead in the final minute kicking a 46 yard field goal. When a Cardinal win seemed inevitable Oregon State’s quarterback Gulbranson threw a miracle pass to Tre’Shaun Harrison who scampered for the touchdown and a 28-27 Beaver lead. The Cardinal suffered a heart- breaking loss in a most unlikely comeback by Oregon State.

Stanford had some great numbers despite the loss. McKee finished with 269 yards and two touchdowns. The Beavers just turned out the lights at Stanford Stadium in a crazy finish. It was absolute madness in the final minute of this game.

The Cardinal will face a tough Notre Dame Fighting Irish team next Saturday at Notre Dame with kickoff at 4:30 PM. That game will be televised on NBC.

Stanford Cardinal podcast with Daniel Dullum: Cardinal hope to end two game losing streak this Saturday as OSU comes calling

Oregon Ducks quarterback Bo Nix (10) was hard to catch for the Stanford Cardinal cornerback Kyu Blu Kelly (17) at Autzen Stadium in Eugene on Sat Oct 1, 2022 (AP News photo)

On the Stanford Cardinal football podcast with Daniel:

#1 Daniel, You knew the way the Stanford Cardinal (1-3) were playing it was going to be a rough go for Stanford when they went into the confines at Autzen Stadium in Eugene when the Cardinal got landslided 45-27 by the Oregon Ducks (4-1).

#2 For Stanford quarterback Tanner McKee it was not the afternoon that it was cracked up to be throwing 166 yards, 19-33, and two touchdowns it wasn’t enough to keep up with the Ducks.

#3 Daniel, rough first half for the Cardinal defense as the Ducks opened up the first quarter with ten points and closing out the half in the second quarter with 21 points.

#4 Ducks quarterback Bo Nix went 16-29 for 161 yards for two touchdowns. Nix was able to run the ball and that was one of the factors that kept the Cardinal defense off last Saturday.

#5 The Cardinal host the Oregon State Beavers (3-2) this Sat Oct 8th. The Beavers have lost two straight games after losing three in a row. The Beavers dropped their last game last Saturday getting trounced by the Utah Utes 42-16. How do you see the Beavers and Cardinal match up this Saturday at Stanford Stadium?
