Stanford Cardinal podcast with Daniel Dullum: Shaw says a victory against BYU would be a great send off for seniors

On the Cardinal podcast with Daniel:

#1 The Stanford Cardinal going into Saturday night’s game against the BYU Cougars very likely will be a handful. The Cardinal 1-8 in conference games in the Pac 12 this season. They won’t be able to improve on that record anymore as they lost their last conference game in the Big Game last Saturday at Cal.

#2 The Cardinal are 3-8 and are last in the Pac 12. The Cardinal just looking at their overall record and that last loss at Cal had to be one of the most deflating experiences they’ve had all season.

#3 Daniel in the Big Game it had to be one of Stanford head coach David Shaw’s biggest disappointments leading 17-6 after three quarters to lost 27-20 after two fumbles and Cal capitalizing on those mistakes for scores?

#4 Coach Shaw did say that while it was disappointing not coming up with a victory against the Bears he hopes the team will refocus it’s efforts on this last game at BYU and get a win so he could send his seniors off with a victory.

#5 Daniel for Stanford quarterback Tanner McKee a rough season his line from the Cal game 29-45, 271 yards, he threw a touchdown and one interception. He needed more completions and he just wasn’t able to hit all the receivers he wanted to.

Daniel did the Stanford football podcasts throughout the 2022 season and will return next Friday with Women’s and Men’s basketball podcasts right here at http://www.sportsradioservice.com

Stanford Tops Florida State 70-60

Stanford Tops Florida State 70-60

By Barbara Mason

Friday afternoon the Stanford Cardinal (3-3) dereated the Florida State Seminoles (1-6) at the ESPN EVENTS Invitational in Orlando 70-60. This was a quick turnaround for both teams.

The Cardinal lost a close one with multiple opportunities to close this game out but too many mistakes and turnovers decided the game in favor of Ole Miss 72-68 on Thursday. Florida State has been struggling all season being blown out from the start of the game against the Siena Saints 80-63 also on Thursday.

The Cardinal defeated the Seminoles by ten points. The Seminoles were looking to beat a Pac-12 team after a horrendous start this season but the couldn’t capitalize on the Cardinal.

Florida State had a nice start in this game leading 8-0 after four minutes of play. Stanford made up the deficit and for the remainder of the first half it was a see-saw game with lead changes throughout. In the final minute of the first half the Seminoles took the largest lead since the opening minutes of the game 27-21.

The second half was close until the ten-minute mark. Stanford turned this game around and threatened to blow Florida State out of the building. With 6:18 left in the game the Cardinal led 60-47. Stanford was dominating the glass but still had those turnovers which were leveled with numerous offensive rebounds.

The Cardinal had a 16-2 run going with six minutes left in the game. Stanford struggled from downtown going 3 of 24 but had success in the paint and they kept Florida playing from behind in the final 12 minutes of play. FSU had 15 turnovers and looked nothing like a team that wanted this win. The Cardinal will play a third game on Saturday at the Invitational.

This was a great win for Stanford and it was the play on the glass that won this game. They were awful from downtown going 3 of 26 but it was the offensive rebounds and shots in the paint that kept them in the game ultimately winning.

Brandon Angels had a huge game finishing with 22 points. Harrison Ingram and Michael Jones each had ten points. Ingram and James Keefe both had eight rebounds.

The Seminoles Caleb Mills had the high with 16 points followed by Cam’ron Fletcher who finished with 12 points. So the quandary continues for Florida State. Right now the team is a mess; still looking for answers.

Stanford will now go into their third game of this invitational taking on the winner of the Nebraska Memphis matchup this evening. The Cardinal’s third game will be on Sun Nov 27th at 8:00 AM.

Stanford Falls In Quarterfinals to Ole Miss 71-68

By Barbara Mason

On Thanksgiving Day the Stanford Cardinal (2-3) took on Ole Miss (5-0) in the ESPN EVENTS Invitational. The SEC is a power house, recruiting at a high level and being the deepest in all of college basketball.

Ole Miss got a fast start and never let-up throughout the first half. They never trailed in the first 20 minutes. Stanford had several opportunities mid-way through the half when the two teams were tied at 16. The Cardinal could not get on top of Mississippi turnovers playing a part in the 29-22 deficit at the half. Harrison had the high for Stanford with seven points. The Cardinal had six turnovers so far in the game. Stanford does struggle with turnovers having an average of 16 per game.

Ole Miss’s Matthew Murrell, one of the best three point shooters in the country was strangely silent in the first half without a single field goal. His teammates picked up the slack with Amaree Abram one of them hitting 12 points, a career high, in the opening half.

Ole Miss extended their lead as the second half wore on. They led by double digit for most of the second half. Stanford was having a lot of difficulty stringing stops together and Mississippi was imposing their will on the Cardinal offensively.

Mid-way through the second half the Stanford offense started to put something together. They cut the double digit deficit to four points in a 7-0 Cardinal run. This game turned in favor of Stanford. With 38 ticks left on the clock the Cardinal trailed by two points 65-63. Again Abram answered with a three-pointer giving the Rebels a 68-63 lead. The final was 71-68.

Stanford got close in this one but just could not take advantage of the many opportunities they had throughout the game. Harrison Ingram finished with a season high 24 points. Spencer Jones had 10 points.

With the Rebels Matthew Murrell completely off his game there could have been doubt as to how this game would end had it not been for the excellent play of Amaree Abram with 26 points. Jaemyn Brakefield had 17 points and Jayveous McKinnis finished with 15 points. There was just too much fire power from the Rebels and Stanford played from behind the entire game.

The winner of this game will advance to the semifinals to take on the Siena Saints (3-2). Siena got past Florida State in an upset earlier today 80-63. Stanford faces Florida State for their second game in the ESPN Events Invitational at 10:30 AM on Friday morning.

Stanford Cardinal football podcast with Michael Roberson: Fumbles at game’s end costs Cardinal the Axe; Cal makes a comeback in 27-20 win in Berkeley

Cal Bears football play by play announcer Joe Starkey called his last Big Game against the Stanford Cardinal Sat Nov 19, 2022 at Cal Memorial Stadium in Berkeley. Starkey called the famous 1982 “The Band on is on the field” game and Cal came back in miracle win in the fourth quarter Saturday (photo from ESPN)

On the Stanford Cardinal podcast with Michael:

#1 The Stanford Cardinal led for a majority of this game on Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Berkeley but just could hold onto it towards the end especially the football as the Bears Jackson Sirmon took advantage of a fumble and returned it for a 37 yard touchdown for a Cal 27-20 win at the Big Game.

#2 The Sirmon touchdown came after Stanford fumbled two balls away after leading through three quarters 17-6. Cal started chipping away at the Stanford defense with Jack Plummer throwing to Monroe Young for a one yard touchdown to close the gap 17-12 at 11:18 left in the game.

#3 Jackson Simon scored at the goal line for Cal on a fumble recovery with 9:54 left in the game and a Jadyn Ott threw for a two point conversion got Cal in front 20-17.

#4 Three plays in the next offensive series for the Bears Ott capitalized again carrying for a one yard score to put Cal on top for good with a ten point lead 27-17 with 0:58 left. Stanford Joshua Karty hit a 61 yard field goal for the Cardinal’s last score in a 27-20 final.

#5 The Cardinal host the BYU Cougars (6-5) and crushed the Utah Tech Trailblazers (4-7) 52-26. The Cardinal can’t fold against a team like the Cougars next Saturday and finishing on the road they will have to have defense to stop the high scoring Cougars.

Stanford Cardinal game wrap: Stanford collapses to Cal in thriller 27-20

For Stanford Cardinal head coach David Shaw just one more brick in the wall as as he looks on during first half action at Memorial Stadium in Berkeley against the Cal Bears Sat Nov 19, 2022. It would be Stanford’s fourth straight loss. (AP News photo)

Stanford Falls to California In a Thriller 27-20

By Barbara Mason

Saturday afternoon under sunny skies the Stanford Cardinal (3-7) took on the California Bears (3-7) in the 125th Big Game at Memorial Stadium. The game was sold out and 10,000 lucky fans received a replica Axe as they entered. This is a game that fans look forward to each and every year.

Cal won the toss and deferred. The Cardinal went on offense and a terrific drive ensued. Stanford drove downfield and inside of the opening three minutes scored the first touchdown of the game. Mitch Leigber ran for one yard giving Stanford the early 7-0 lead.

Tanner McKee was 6 of 6 in the first quarter for 67 yards. Cal’s Dario Longhetto kicked two field goals in the quarter; one at 10:00 a 52 yard kick, and a second with 33 seconds left in the quarter. The Cardinal kicker Joshua Karty sent a 42 yd field goal through the uprights at 3:47 for a 10-6 score as the clock ran out on the first quarter. It was a great start for both teams in some unexpectedly solid offense.

With 2:21 left in the half the Cardinal cut short a terrific Cal drive intercepting a Jack Plummer pass in the end zone for a touchback. Stanford took over on downs but was unable to move the ball. The Bears took over on downs. With 47 seconds left in the half Stanford got the ball back and the Cardinal had one last shot in the first half.

The score remained 10-6 in favor of Stanford at the half. Cal had squandered away two scoring opportunities, one of them going on a fourth and one and a second with the interception in the end zone. The Cardinal defense was instrumental in this game keeping the Stanford lead intact.

Stanford would extend their lead in the third quarter. Tanner McKee, who was having a banner day, hit Elijah Higgins for nine yards and a touchdown giving Stanford a 17-6 lead at 8:31.

When Stanford looked to be in full control of the game, the Cal Bears flipped the script. At 11:18 Jack Plummer found Monroe Young for one yard and a touchdown.

The two-point conversion failed but the Bears had pulled to within striking distance 17-12. At 9:54 Stanford fumbled and Jackson Sirmon recovered the ball rushing for a touchdown and Cal’s first lead of the game. The two point conversion was good and the Bears led 20-17. There was 9:26 left in the game which is an eternity.

The Bears were back in field goal range when disaster struck and Plummer threw his second pick of the game at 6:42. California was giving Stanford every opportunity to take back the lead but there were no takers for the Cardinal. Tanner McKee had his first interception of the game at 2:15 and it could not have come at a worse time for the Cardinal.

With 0:58 left on the game clock the Bears found the end zone and a 27-17 lead. Stanford’s kicker Karty attempted a 61 yard field goal which was good and his longest kick this season but it was too little too late for the Cardinal.

As the clock wore down the ceremonial stare-down gathered in the end zone with the California Bears retaining the ax for another year.

This was a drastic turn of events for Stanford after leading for most of the game. Quarterback Tanner McKee was 29 of 45 for 271 yards and the one interception that changed the course of the game. The Cardinal had 129 rushing yards but the one turnover late in the game was the deciding factor. They also had three fumbles one that was recovered by Cal. This was a hotly contested game and it was the California Bears who prevailed.

STANFORD–The Stanford Cardinal (1-2) were under attack the entire 40 minutes by the visiting #19 San Diego State Aztecs (3-0) and captured Maples Pavilion, 74-62.

“We knew coming in it would be a battle,” said Stanford Head Coach Jerod Haase. “We would have to play our A-Game to be able to get there. I don’t think we played our A-Game, but I also think they deserve a lot of credit for playing really well.”

The Aztecs didint care that the Cardinal was just returning from the Midwest tangling with a team from the Power 5 Big Ten.

Stanford never led in the first half, and trailed by as much as 17 points during the initial 30 minutes of play. 41-30 SDSU.

The Aztecs converted six threes, contributing to their double-digit advantage over the Cardinal.

The home team managed to get their deficit to single-digits (6) a few times in the second stanza, but the Aztecs were on the defensive to be victorious.

San Diego State pushed the lead to 12 points by the sound of the final buzzer. 74-62 SDSU.

The Cardinal was led by senior forward Spencer Jones with 15 points, six rebounds and three blocks, while sophomore teammate Harrison Ingram also chipped in 11 points and four rebounds.

Spencer expressed his feelings on his all around game, “I’ve always felt my defense has been getting better and better every year; this year is no different. I try to lead my team defensively and offensively. I give my best effort on each end. I’ll do whatever I can to make this team win.”

The Aztecs had three players in double figures: Senior forward Jaedon LeDee dropped 14 points and four rebounds; junior guard Lamont Butler committed 11 points and six assists; Oakland native and San Leandro High star, Keshad Johnson put 11 points on the scoreboard.
