Colorado holds off late Cardinal rally, wins 81-71

Stanford’s final Pac-12 men’s basketball road game ended in Boulder, Colo., with an 81-71 defeat at the hands of Colorado Sunday at the CU Events Center.

Colorado (20-9 overall, 11-7 Pac-12) was led by Tristan da Silva with a game-high 27 points on 11 of 18 shooting, including five 3-pointers. KJ Simpson also drained five 3s and finished with 22 points. J’Vonne Hadley scored 15 points for the Buffs, followed by Eddie Lampkin with 10.

DaSilva also grabbed 11 of Colorado’s 38 rebounds, and Simpson collected seven assists.

The Cardinal (12-17 overall, 7-12 Pac-12) received a 26-point effort from Maxime Raynard, who made 10 of 13 field goal attempts including two 3-pointers. The Paris, France, native registered his 11th double-double by pulling down 12 rebounds and equaling his season-best three blocks.

Michael Jones was next for Stanford with 13 points, followed by Kanaan Carlyle with 12 points and Brandon Angel had 10 points.

There were seven lead changes in the first half, with Stanford leading by as many as five points. Raynaud, Angel and Jones led a 12-3 run that put the Cardinal up 24-19. The Buffaloes responded with a 17-3 run, and though Stanford scored seven of the last nine points in the first half, CU led 44-37 at the break.

Raynaud scored 13 of his points in the second half, and Stanford whittled away at the Colorado lead. The Cardinal used a 13-3 run to close the second half, but the Buffaloes held on for the win,

Stanford returns to Maples Pavilion Thursday for its final regular season home game against California. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.

Embarking on its final Pac-12 men’s basketball road trip, Stanford traveled to Salt Lake City and dropped a 90-68 decision to Utah Thursday.

It was the fifth consecutive loss for Stanford.

Cole Bajema hit five 3-pointers en route to a game-high 21 points. Gabe Madsen was next for the Utes with 15 points, and Delvon Smith had 13 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds. The Utes outrebounded Stanford 40-29, and Utah never trailed in the game.

Michael Jones led the Cardinal with 20 points, including three 3-pointers Andrej Stojakovic scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds, and Kanaan Carlyle and Maxime Reynaud added 10 points apiece for Stanford (12-16 overall, 7-11 Pac-12).

Field goal shooting The was a mixed bag for Stanford. The Cardinal made 49.1 percent of its total shots, but only 4-of-15 from 3-point range.

The Utes (17-11 overall, 8-9 Pac-12) opened the game with a 15-4 run, but Stanford recovered to make a 12-7 run to pull within 22-16. Reynaud scored twice during that run and Max Murrell scored his first points after missing nine games due to injury.

Utah led 46-27 at halftime. Though the Cardinal’s shooting improved to 58.6 percent (17 of 29) in the second half, they were unable to cut the Utes lead any less than 14 points. Jones scored 10 of his points in the second half, while the Cardinal tallied 23 of its 41 second-half points in the paint.

Josue Gil-Silva scored his first career points for Stanford in the closing seconds.

Stanford’s next stop is Boulder, Colo, on Sunday, when the Cardinal visit the Colorado Buffaloes for a 6 p.m. contest.

#2 The Stanford women were coming off a tough loss to the Arizona Wildcats 68-61 on Fri Feb 23rd. You knew the Cardinal would be not too happy after that loss and fired up in preparing to face ASU.

#3 The Stanford women face the Oregon State Beavers on Thursday night for a 7:00pm PT tip at Oregon State. Oregon State is third in the Pac 12 at 22-5 and are 15-1 at home. Could this game be just as difficult for Stanford as it was at Arizona?

#4 Michael, times have been tough for the Stanford men they have lost four in row and their most recent loss came against the Oregon State Beavers at Maples Pavilion 85-73 last Saturday night. You covered this game what was the biggest let down for Stanford not getting enough offense or the Beavers just came and was lights out from beginning to end on offense.

#5 The Stanford men try it all over again and hope to snap their four game losing streak Thursday night in Utah against the Utes. Utah are eighth in the Pac 12 at 16-11. The Utes have a good home record at 12-2 do you see the Cardinal having their hands full in this one?

STANFORD, Calif. — Senior Spencer Jones is the team’s #1 three point shooter (306) in school history, as he and his Stanford Cardinal (13-14, 8-9 Pac-12) surprisingly fell to the industrious Oregon State Beavers (11-17, 3-14 Pac-12), 85-73, on a warm Saturday Afternoon on the Farm.

The visitors opened the scoring of the game with a Three on the Stanford bench’s side of the court. That 3-0 lead didn’t last too long, as the Cardinal went on a 9-0 run, to put them up by six. During that stint, Stanford hit three treys. Including two by Spencer Jones, which made him the All-Time leader beyond the Arc. Maxime Raynaud hit the third basket.

Jones passed former Cardinal great Chasson Randle with the 305th triple of his career. He added another (306) before recess, and had 11 points at the half. Raynaud added 19 to the Cardinal tally.

However, after the Stanford offensive run, the Beavers performed their own 13-0 run over a 7 1/2 minute timeframe to lead by seven (18-11). OSU led by as much as nine points, and made several more runs, when Stanford tried to tie the game and/or take the lead.

As the first half ended, the Beavers maintained a 6-point lead, 38-32. They were led in scoring by sophomore guard Jordan Pope (17). OSU also outrebounded the home team 22 to 9, and shot 52% from the field, compared to Stanford’s 41% floor shooting.

After intermission, Oregon State scored an immediate five in a row, taking a double-digit lead. They reached the height of 12 points multiple times, and had a 13-0 run in the second half. Despite those exhornant leads, Stanford continued to fight back.

The Cardinal committed a 14-point run on their behalf, not only tying the contest, but actually taking the lead on a Brandon Angel three, putting his squad up 50-47 (12:30) midway through the half. They would go back and forth over the next several minutes of play. At the tune of two lead changes and 3 ties. The first half was 2:2 for ties and lead changes.

With all the action going on inside Maples, the rebounding disparity (39/22) and missed free throws (8) eventually caught up with Stanford. The Beavers shot 53% overall for the game, while the Cardinal settled for 46%.

The Man of the Hour, Spencer Jones, had a troubling second half. He only added 2 points to his halftime total, and fouled out at the 4:25 mark of the game. He verbalized his disappointment of the loss, and will acknowledge the magnitude of his feat later on in the season.

At the final horn, the Beavers had caused major wood damage on the Palo Alto campus, upsetting the Cardinal by 12 points, 85-73.

Three players for Stanford reached the 10+ points plateau: Raynaud (29) & 8 rebounds, Brandon Angel (15) & 6 rebounds, and the aforementioned Spencer Jones (13).

OSU produced four ballers with double-digit scoring. Jordan Pope (30), Tyler Bilodeau (18), Michael Rataj (22) & 10 rebounds, and Dexter Akanno (11) & 7 rebounds.

The Cardinal will next be in action in Salt Lake City, as they take on the Utah Utes, Thursday, February 29 (Leap Day) at 5:30 PM MST on the Pac-12 Network. Oregon State returns to the Beaver State, but in Eugene to battle their fellow inhabitant Oregon Ducks, Wednesday, February 28 at 8 PM PDT.

STANFORD, Calif. — The Stanford Cardinal (12-14, 7-9 Pac-12) were unable to contain the Oregon Ducks (18-8, 10-5 Pac-12), 78-65, in a late Thursday Night game inside Maples Pavilion.

Stanford senior forward Brandon Angel got the game started off with his team scoring the first points of the game from the charity stripe. He converted the two free throws, and managed to lead his team in scoring at the half (15), although they trailed by eight, 40-32.

Oregon made several runs in the first half, including a 5-0 one after Angel’s FTs, and a 10-0 one that put space between them and the Cardinal. Redshirt Junior guard Jadrian Tracey led all players (16) in scoring at recess.

Despite three lead changes and three ties, the Ducks were able to fly away to nearly a double digit advantage at the midway point of the contest.

Oregon opened the second half on a 5-0 run, putting the feathered visitors up by double-digits (13). That lead was further extended to a high of 17 points (60-43), with nearly 12 1/2 minutes left in the game, and again (74-57) nine minutes later.

Stanford’s noble attempts were combatted several times with daggers by the birds from the Beaver State. The Final margin after 40 minutes of play, was 13 points. 78-65, Oregon Ducks, despite being the underdog by the astute oddsmakers.

Stanford had two hoopers reach 10+ points. Angel dropped 21 points with 6 rebounds, and Spencer Jones had 14 points, in addition to 5 rebounds.

Oregon presented three players with double-figure tallies. Tracey finished with 20 points and 5 rebounds. Jackson Shelstad offered 19 points, 7 assists and 5 rebounds. N’Faly added 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Stanford is next in action, Saturday, February 24, hosting the Oregon State Beavers at 2 PM PDT on P12NET. Oregon crosses the Bay to take on California, on the same date, but at 4 PM PDT also on the Pac-12 Network.

Cougars use big second half to upend Cardinal 72-59

Washington State used a balanced attack and a big second half Saturday, as the Cougars routed Stanford 72-59 in Pac-12 men’s basketball at Beasley Coliseum in Pullman, Wash.

Jaylen Wells and Isaac Jones scored 15 points apiece to lead WSU (20-6 overall, 7-8 Pac-12). Myles Rice was next with 14 points and Andrej Jakimovski finished with 13 points. Oscar Cluff had three steals and pulled down 12 of the Cougars’ 37 rebounds and Rice collected five assists.

Brandon Angel led the Cardinal (12-13 overall, 7-8 Pac-12) with 15 points, hitting 6 of 9 field goal attempts. Kanaan Carlyle and Michael Jones were next with 12 points each. Carlyle dished out five assists, 6 hit two 3-pointers, and Maxime Raynaud grabbed five rebounds.

Stanford trailed 21-11 with 9:56 remaining in the first half, but rallied with a 23-12 run to take a 34-33 lead. Benny Gealer scored in the last seconds of the half giving the Cardinal a 36-35 lead at the break.

The Cardinal enjoyed their biggest lead, 47-42, with 15:32 to play. Washington State reeled off a 21-6 run to assume control of the contest. The Cougars outscored Stanford 37-23 in the second half.

Stanford returns home to Maples Pavilion this Thursday, hosting Oregon at 8 p.m.

Huskies rout Cardinal 85-65 in Pac-12 hoops

Stanford opened its penultimate Pac-12 men’s basketball road trip Thursday with an 85-65 defeat by Washington at Alaska Airlines Arena in Seattle.

Washington (14-11 overall, 6-8 Pac-12) was led by Deion Brooks Jr. with 30 points on 8 of 14 field goal shooting, and Koren Johnson with another 30 points off the bench, including six 3-pointers. Shaver Wheeler was next for the Huskies with 14 points, eight assists and two steals. Braxton Meah had 13 rebounds.

Maxime Raynaud and Brandon Angel were the Cardinal scoring leaders with 19 points each. Raynaud also had a game-high 16 rebounds to go with two steals. Angel was 7 of 7 at the free throw line, and Raynaud’s double-double was his 10th of the season, Andrej Stojakovic added 10 points off the bench.

There were 13 lead changes and seven ties throughout most of the first half. Raynaud scored 11 of the Cardinal’s first 17 points, and scored seven points in a 10-0 Stanford run that put the visitors up 16-8.

The Huskies responded with an 8-point run and hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to take a 40-38 halftime lead.

Washington opened the second half with a 12-0 run, and while the Cardinal (12-12 overall, 7-7 Pac-12) cut their deficit to single digits with 11:14 left on a Stojskovic 3-pointer, the Huskies methodically pulled away.

The Cardinal resume their Northwest road swing on Saturday, when they visit Washington State. Game time is 3 p.m.

STANFORD, Calif. — A school record 19 threes helped propel the Stanford Cardinal (12-11, 7-6 Pac-12) to a 99-68 blowout win over the University of Southern California Trojans (9-15, 3-10 Pac-12) in front of a sold out (7,563) Maples Pavilion crowd.

An electric atmosphere surrounding the Northern/Southern rivalry between the two California conference rivals, was also exacerbated by the son (Bronny) of the NBA All-Time Leading scorer, Lebron James, making his first and only appearance at Stanford. The full house was cheering and booing Bronny James, in the same polarizing scenario his father has been through during his storied career. The jeers were apparently directed at James Sr. vicariously through his son.

James Jr. had an unimpressive 6 points and 3 assists, without his father being in the Palo Alto crowd. However, when the Trojans played Cal last Wednesday, King James was inside Haas Pavilion, to witness his son’s team lose an overtime battle to the Golden Bears.

Cal actually started the game off with a 4-0 lead. Unfortunately for them, that was the last lead they would possess in the game Bronny bounced a dime assist to put the Trojans on the scoreboard first, and later hit a three and got an exciting breakaway dunk, stuntin like his daddy. Other than that, it was all Stanford with the excitement and thrills.

The Cardinal stroked a school record 12 treys in the first half. They also had three players in double-figures after 20 minutes of play. Maxime Raynaud (15), 2 threes, Andrej Stojakovic (14), 4 threes, and Benny Gealer (11), 3 threes. The Trojans had 0 players with 10+ points.

After the early 4-point deficit, Stanford went on a 25-0 run and led by as much as 31 points before recess. USC was scoreless for nearly 7 1/2 minutes and approximately 9 minutes without a made FG. At halftime, the Cardinal led by 29 points, 55-26.

In the second half, the onslaught continued, as the team added seven more 3-pointers to their record tabulations. Their lead reached a margin of 33 points, and they managed to maintain that advantage – minus two points – at the final whistle, 99-68.

During the second 20-minute block two Cardinal players recorded career highs in scoring: Freshman Andrej Stojakovic (20) and sophomore Benny Gealer (14). Maxime Raynaud was almost perfect from the field (10-11) and contributed 25 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists and 2-2 from threeland. Spencer Jones had 15 points on 5 made threes, and Kanaan Carlyle added 10 points, 4 assists and 2 blocks.

The Trojans only had a single soul reach double-digits, and it was not Bronny James. Freshman Isaiah Collier posted 18 points for his USC squad, but that was not nearly enough for the offensive barrage of their NorCal opponent.

After the impressive 31-point beatdown, the Cardinal will next be in action in the Great Northwest, as they will battle the Washington Huskies, Thursday, February 15, at 6 PM PDT on ESPN2. The Trojans will head to the Beehive State on the same date to take on the Utah Utes at 8 PM MST .

Cardinal Mauled by Bruins, 82-74, in the last Conference Matchup of the Rival California Schools; UCLA wins fourth straight game

STANFORD, Calif. — The Stanford Cardinal (11-11, 6-6 Pac-12) could not withstand the sharp claws of the University of California – Los Angeles Bruins (12-11, 7-5 Pac-12), 82-74, in their LAST Pacific – 12 Battle on the Farm.

Although the LA bears took a 3-0 lead to start the game, the Palo Alto squad came back to go ahead momentarily. Both teams traded leads and had multiple ties during the first 20-minute block, Both had 5-point leads , while Stanford had an 8-0 run, UCLA had a 6-0 of their own push.

Despite no player for the Cardinal reaching double-figures in the First 20, senior Brandon Angel provided eight points for the home team. The Bruins leader at the half was freshman Sebastian Mack, with his 12 points, lady ng everyone in the gymnasium.

At intermission, the visitors from Westwood had a 2-point lead. UCLA 35, Stanford 33.

In the second half, the Bruins had an 8-0 run and held leads as high as 8 points. Stanford managed to get a 50-49 lead near the midway point of the second half. However, UCLA was able to stave them off the rest of the game.

Stanford was perfect from the line most of the game, until (1:25) less than two minutes left in the game, when Maxime Raynaud missed the first of his three misses. UCLA, on the other hand, was horrid from the line for the game, until late in the second half. They ended with a respectable 77% from the line at game’s end.

The Cardinal tried to overtake their southern California opposition, with three players tallying double figure scoring. Raynaud had a double-double (20 points & 10 rebounds), Brandon Angel (12) and Spencer Jones (15). Their 15 turnovers did not help, and the bruins 7 more made threes and 9 more FT’s was a huge contributing factor in the team’s downfall.

The Bruins presented five hoopers with 10+ points on the stat sheet. They were led by the aforementioned Mack (21) with 4 made threes. His 6 missed free throws kept him in the low 20’s. The other four: Aden Bona (16), Dylan Andrews (13), Will McClendon (13), and Lazar Stefanovic (10).

After the 40 minutes of regulation time ended, the UCLA Bruins maintained their largest lead (8) for the final score, 82-74.

The Cardinal will next be in action hosting the USC Trojans, Saturday, February 10, at Maples at 7 PM on ESPN2/U. The Bruins cross the Bay to take on California on the same date at 2:30 PM on FOX.
