Huestis King of the Block on the Farm as Stanford Rolls Past USC 80-59

By Matthew Harrington

At the time of the year when teams are piecing together the final bullet points of their March Madness resumes, the Stanford Cardinal did exactly what it needed to do Thursday night; It won. The 80-59 victory over visiting University of Southern California at Maples Pavilion didn’t captivate audiences like North Carolina’s stunner over Duke earlier in the evening, but Stanford still managed to finish just good enough to come out ahead against the Trojans (10-16, 1-12), firmly entrenched in the Pac-12 standings cellar, to continue to roll towards an at-large bid in the big dance.

The Cardinal shooting touch appeared to be more or a flail Thursday, as Stanford (17-8, 8-5 Pac-12) finished 28 of 69 from the floor, including a lackluster 2 of 19 from beyond the three-point line. Stanford turned that negative into a positive however, besting USC in the rebound battle 45-40. Stanford’s tenacious forward Josh Huestis led the boards barrage, picking up almost half (7) of the Cardinal’s 18 offensive rebounds. USC finished with 10 off their own glass. The Cardinal owned the turnover battle, forcing 18 Trojan errors to 7 of its own.

For Huestis, the night proved a memorable one as the senior stalwart notched a double-double with 11 points and while setting a new career-best in rebounds with 18. With his denial of a Strahinja Gavrilovic lay up two minutes into play the Great Falls, Mont. native moved past Tim Young as the Cardinal all-time blocks leader. Huestis finished the night with three rejections for a career total of 169, two more than Young.

Along with Huestis, three of Stanford’s other four starters hit double-digits in scoring, with guards Anthony Brown (13) and Chasson Randle (18) joining forward Dwight Powell (14) on the list of scorers with ten-plus points. USC guard Pe’Shon Howard led the Trojans with 13 points, while Julian Jacobs chipped in 11. The Trojans were without junior guard Byron Wesley, team leader in scoring (17.6) and rebounds (6.9) due to a violation of team rules.

The Cardinal suffered an early scare when USC’s Strahinja Gavrilovic fouled Powell hard in the head at the 5:36 mark of the first. Powell would leave the game but ultimately returned with about seven minutes left in the half sporting a headband wrapped around some stitches and a new number. Powell’s traditional 33 jersey, now blood-soaked, was shed in favor of one with a 32 stitched on back.

The preeminent fear after Powell’s injury was a continuation of dismal first-half shooting display as the Cardinal only hit 10 of 35 field goals in the first 20 minutes. They managed to hold a 32-23 at the half on the strength of their ability to force turnovers, nab offensive rebounds and a six-point outburst from Powell’s injury sub, Robbie Lemons.

The Cardinal finished the final 20 minutes with a much better shooting performance by outscoring the visitors 48-36, including a stretch where the Trojans were limited to one basket and three free throws made. With Stanford leading 51-42 7 minutes in to the half, the Cardinal went on a dominant 21-8 run till Roschon Prince hit a lay up with 4:17 left in regulation. Stanford coasted from there on out for the 80-59 win to sweep the season series against their Southern California rivals.

Next on the schedule is the University of California Los Angeles for a Saturday tilt at Maples, game number two of the remaining four games at home. The Cardinal also have two road games sandwiched between Saturday’s contest and a return home March 5th against Colorado, the final two-game home stretch of the campaign.

Stanford Remains Unbeaten at Home

Stanford (24-2,13-1) returned to action just two days after one of their most impressive performances of the season, defeating the Arizona State Sun Devils 61-35.  On Sunday, the sixth ranked Cardinal played host to the struggling Arizona Wildcats (5-20, 1-13).  Stanford defeated Arizona 74-48.

Arizona was coming into the contest with just five wins on the season, with a record of 5-19.  Only one of those wins has come in Pac-12 play.  The Wildcats started the game strong as they got the first bucket of the afternoon.  They would be able to keep up with the Cardinal for the first 5:30 of the game.  The game was tied at 11-11 before the Cardinal would take over.  Stanford would go on a ten minute 24-4 run before Arizona would hit their next field goal.  Arizona was only able to mustard up another field goal and two free throws to end the half.  Stanford was on top at the half by the score of 48-19.

Stanford would cruise to victory in the second half.  Arizona outscored the Cardinal in the second half 29-26.  However, Stanford played their reserves for most of the second half.  Chiney Ogwumike, who plays as much time as possible, only saw 22 minutes in the win, being her season low on minutes played this season.  The starter who saw the most minutes played was Amber Orrange, and she capped out at 24 minutes.

Bonnie Samuelson led the Cardinal in scoring with 17 points, 15 of which came from beyond the arc.  Ogwumike finished with 15 points.  Lili Thompson and Orrange both had nine points in the game.  Orrange also had an astonishing nine assists.

Only six Wildcats played for Arizona.  Candice Warthen, Kama Griffitts and Keyahndra Cannon all played 40 minutes.  LaBrittney Jones led the team in scoring with 11 points.  She was the only Wildcat to get into double digits in scoring.

The Cardinal will finish off the road portion of their schedule next weekend as they travel to Los Angeles to take on USC on Friday and UCLA on Sunday.

Morris Phillips and Michael Duca on the NCAA: Bears bring two game win streak against LA schools this week

by Morris Phillips and Michael Duca

BERKELEY–When Cal had to play Washington State at Pullman last Wednesday for a four point 80-76 win over the Cougars it was not an easy win. They had to fly and drive through some tough weather to get to Washington State and take the long bus ride from the Spokane airport to get there. Richard Solomon in that game had 12 points and nine rebouds to help lead the Golden Bears to the win.

Cal has such a balanced team that it’s hard to point to any one guy, but if you did its the Bears Justin Cobbs he’s a senior he’s moving up the all time scoring list at Cal. Solomon has been a barometer when they beat number one Arizona at Cal when they pulled off the big upset. Cobbs was 6-6 and four nights after that against Stanford he goes 0-6 and they lose. So here’s somebody that is a barometer of winning and losing.

The game against Washington State Cobbs had a fine game, the Bears hurt the Cougars in Pullman with the inside production Cobbs and David Kravish had big games. The Bears went onto Seattle and deomoed the Washington Huskies 72-59 and the Bears who were not playing consistent basketball when they lost games to teams like Arizona State and Stanford and turned it around and won both games in Washington is consistent basketball.

The wins comes on the heels of the four loses in five games and luckily the team has done enough so their in the picture. The Bears are in the hunt for a post season bid, an NCAA bid, if they continue to play well they’ve got six games left and they’ve been anything but consistent but if they can win down the stretch four out of six they should have an NCAA bid waiting for them.

From the coaching aspect Cal head coach Mike Montgomery has got his team to respond and if anything a kid would criticize that he’s serious all the time but that’s his job. Montgomery is a guy whose suppose to provide leadership and the team spirit at half time when he speaks to the players at half time. He expects the guys to come out and respond.

They follow the scouting reports which are always detailed and most of the time it works out and in this particular case the trip to Washington was sparked by the end of half runs. 19-2 against Washington on Saturday and then 14-2 against Washington State on Wednesday.

Right before half time the Bears were able to make up some deficits and take some leads to the half so if it’s before half time or after half time coach Montgomery gets his players to respond. Right now the Bears have to keep winning and if they want a post season bid they’ve got to keep winning. Cal has enough marquee wins so UCLA steps right out and facing them this Wednesday at Haas and should give Cal a chance to get a marquee win.

Stanford Shuts Down Sun Devils

By: Joe Lami

The Stanford Cardinal (23-2,12-1) returned to Maples Pavilion on Friday night, just five days after their disappointing loss in Seattle, to Washington on Sunday.  The Cardinal made up for it with a dominating performance over the Arizona State Sun Devils (20-5,9-4) with a 61-34 victory.

The Cardinal held the Sun Devils to one of the lowest scoring totals in Pac-12 history, with Arizona escaping that mark by one point.  The Cardinal’s impressive defense started early, as they held Arizona State to without a field goal until eight minutes into the first half.  This gave Stanford 14-3 lead, following a field goal and a free throw. “They had great defensive energy early, we never got into the flow of the game” said ASU head coach Charli Turner Thorne.

The dominance continued as Stanford went into halftime leading the Sun Devils 32-12.  This is the 2nd time in Pac-12 history that Stanford has held an opponent to the least amount of points scored in a first half.  Arizona State shot 17% from the field in the first half, and it didn’t get much better from the charity strike, as they went two of seven from the line.

The second half wasn’t much better for the Sun Devils, as they continued to struggle shooting 30% from the field for a total game percentage of 24%.  The Sun Devils also finished the game shooting 8% from beyond the arc, as they only hit one shot in the 12 shots attempted.  It was an overall great defensive performance for the Cardinal, especially coming off of only their second loss of the season.  “We haven’t been this excited to play defense in a long time, and I’m excited that we are again” said star Chiney Ogwumike.

The Stanford defense kept the Sun Devil players from getting into double digits, as both Promise Amukamara and Sophie Brunner led Arizona State in scoring with nine points.  The leading scorer for the Sun Devils in the first meeting between these two top 15 opponents, Quinn Dornstauder, was held to only six points.

The offense was no slouch either for the Cardinal, as they had an impressive game on that side of the ball as well.  Stanford finished the game shooting 54% from the field.  Ogwumike led all scorers with 20 points in only 27 minutes of playing time, as she sat on the bench for the final 13 minutes of the game.  The player of the year candidate also finished with 13 rebounds, all of which came in the first half.  Amber Orrange had another amazing performance, as she finished the game with 14 points, five steals, three rebounds and three assists. “Amber took it upon herself to be the engine of the train” praised head coach, Tara VanDerveer, on Orrange’s performance.

The minutes were passed around equally for one of the first times this season, as 14 different players got into the game.  Out of those 14 players that saw time, ten of them got onto the scoring sheet.

With Friday’s game being one of the best performances of the season, there was still some criticism that came out of it.  One of which was the fact that Stanford had 17 turnovers.  “We have to play better, we have to take care of the ball better” commented VanDerveer.  Another problem that has been reoccurring all season is that Stanford has been giving up way too many offensive rebounds.  That trend would continue on Friday, as Arizona State had 12 offensive boards.   Of the 12 offensive rebounds, Arizona State was able to have eight second-chance points off of them.

Both teams struggled from beyond the arc, Arizona State more so than Stanford.  The Sun Devils shots one of 12 from three.   Stanford finished scoreless, but only had four attempts.  The three-pointer was not in the game plan mentioned VanDerveer after the game.

Stanford bounced back great, as they up their record to 23-2, 12-1.  Thus almost clinching the Pac-12 regular season title.  As long as they don’t fall off of the wagon, they will get the title.  Stanford looks to make it once step closer towards the regular season title, as they host the Wildcats of Arizona.

Morris Phillips and Michael Duca on Cal Bears: Agu death has prefound effect on team, students, and faculty

by Morris Phillips and Michael Duca

BERKELEY–Ted Agu 21, Cal defensive lineman’s story personally is not a sad story, his life at Cal started as a walk on, he was well respected by his by teammates, he worked very hard to get where he was, he caught the eye of his coaches former head coach Jeff Tedford and current head coach Sonny Dykes. He was a major factor in the Cal football program, he was found to have the sickle cell trait which can manifest itself in numerous ways.

Mr.Agu never had any previous symptoms before this came out this week, what were finding out is that the sickle cell trait which obviously effects the African American athletes is really a major factor in some of the deaths that happens to NCAA athletes. It’s one of the major causes of scholarship athletes in the NCAA. It’s a sad story but hopefully people will find out about this desease but more important about Mr.Agu and what a positive spirit he was.

As for African Americans it’s always been known that the issue of sickle cell trait is out there for many and as years have gone by it’s kind of taken a back seat. Now according to statistics the sickle cell trait comes up frequently when tyring to account for the best of athletes. Everybody needs to open their eyes and find out a little bit more and we plan to find out a little bit more about this we hope we can do something in the future can be done that can prevent that.

The shock of this has devastated the entire Cal campus on Monday, no one saw this coming and Mr.Agu himself didn’t know he had the sickle cell trait, he was speaking when he was felled on Friday at the workout, they got him back to the facility and that’s when he fainted and these workouts are supervised by the medical staff. They were there and we still lost them and it’s unfortunate and it really is and we hope we can learn something from his death.

Now looking forward to the football program and the loss of Mr.Agu for next fall, the program will try to rebound from football players who had some of the worst test exams in the nation, the team suffering loses last season and the worst case now with the death of Mr.Agu. The recruiting class that was just signed Dykes would have hoped it would have been in the top three.

The Cal class is probably not in the top half of the Pac 12, there won’t be that immediate help coming and it would appear it will be later rather than sooner. You can’t judge what happened to Cal last year versus a whole lot of circumstances and probably outside of Dykes control but you have to say one thing their sure testing him on his resolve and his ability as a coach in this tough situation.

The Ted Agu situation doesn’t add to the negativity surrounding the program and Dykes can get things turned around and people will love him. This didn’t happen in the first year but we give coach Dykes a pass.

Washington Upsets Number Three Ranked Stanford

By: Joe Lami

Washington did on Sunday what no Pac-12 team has been able to do since 2009, and that is defeat Stanford on home court, thus ending Stanford’s 62-game Pac-12 road winning streak.  The Huskies defeated the Cardinal 87-82, in what is one of the biggest upsets of the season.  Washington coming into the game had a record of 12-10 and 6-5 overall, but the Huskies were able to get by the third-ranked Cardinal.

Stanford was boasting a record of 22-1, with 21 wins coming consecutively.  The last loss that Stanford had was November 11, as they fell on the road to the number one team in the country in Connecticut.

The first half had a lot to do with Stanford’s loss, as they went into the half trailing 41-34.  It was a poor start for the Cardinal, only scoring six points in the first five minutes of the game, giving Washington a 14-6 lead.  Stanford would be able to regain the lead at the 11:48 mark of the first half, 20-19, on a three-pointer drained by Bonnie Samuelson.  However, Mercedes Wetmore answered with a three of her own to give the Huskies the 22-19 lead.  Washington would be able to hold on to the lead for the rest of the first half.

Chiney Ogwumike would get the first bucket of the second half.  Stanford would push to tie the game in the first five minutes of the half and they were able to pull within two, 48-46, with 15:07 remaining in the game.  Stanford would not be able to buy a basket for the next four minutes, allowing the Huskies to go on a 10-0 run to break open the game.  Stanford would try and catch Washington, but the lead was too much for the Cardinal, giving Washington their second win against a ranked opponent on the season.

Washington had an outstanding five players get into double figures, all of them being starters.  Kelsey Plum led the way with 23 points.  Wetmore contributed 18, Aminah Williams had the only Washington double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds.  Jazmine Davis scored 14, and Talia Walton finished out the starters with 13.  Only three points came off of the Husky bench, and it came from the hands of Chantel Osahor.

Ogwumike led the Cardinal in the loss with 23 points, she also brought down 14 rebounds.  Mikaela Ruef had a career performance, as she gained career highs in both points with 16 and rebounds with 22. Samuelson came off of the bench to add 14, she went 4 of 11 from beyond the arc.  Lili Thompson scored 13 points in the loss as well.

Stanford had an awful day shooting with 35% from the field, where as Washington was absolutely astonishing, shooting 47% from the field. Stanford also outrebounded the Huskies 57-38.

The loss breaks the 21-game winning streak of the Cardinal, pushing their record to 22-2.  The loss also means an almost sure drop in the rankings, as they recently moved up to being ranked third in the country.  Stanford will try and bounce back this Friday, as they host the 11th ranked Sun Devils.

Michelle Richardson on the NCAA: Fan gets pushed around not such a Smart move

Tori Eichberger/AP

by Michelle Richardson

Oklahoma State 61 (16-7) vs.Texas Tech (12-11) 65: I have to be honest with you the whole Marcus Smart of Oklahoma State is a bad situation all together. The critics are now trying to compare this pushing incident with a fan from last Saturday’s game with the Malice in the Palace incident which is really unfair and it didn’t warrant that.

This is the thing this is an older gentleman sitting behind the basket with a bunch of other fans and I get that fans will trash talk the players sometimes, but we don’t really know what really transended down there. Smart is saying he was called the N word by the fan. For Snmart this is not the first time he’s been called the N word and just because somebody has been called the N word before and walked away doesn’t always mean your always going to walk away.

There is going to be that moment in time that somebody is going to say the N word and that fan who alledgedly said that when the game was very tight, was very heated and very physical, that fan used that term. So again there’s a time for people to walk away and there is going to be that 10th time it’s that one time when people are not going to want to hear it.

Iowa State 84 (18-4) vs. TCU (9-13) 69: Your going to have to look at it like this the Big Ten is just one of those conferences that you can’t go to sleep on it. You can’t go to sleep on those conferences. Michigan is struggling. They were the top five just two weeks ago and they’re steadily coming down when they get into the heart of their schedule.

Michigan is going to be doing their home and home and Michigan is having a tough go at it but this is the thing I would rather have them have a tough go at it now then when their in March Madness when their really going to be fighting for seeding in the tournament. It’s just very hard.

Was Iowa State winning a big surprise? No, the Big Ten has a lot of talent, you have Michigan, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Indiana, just to name a few on any given day in college basketball one of those teams can beat the other. So if you go from top to bottom the Big Ten is not a horrible conference.

Wichita State (25-0) 82 vs.North Iowa (11-13)73: Wichita State has the confidence but really what it is for W State’s success is they have the anger. The anger is that their 25-0 and their only ranked number four in the country. Their angry and Wichita State is not getting the respect due to a team with that record.

I don’t understand how their 25-0 and Arizona is the number two team and Arizona is the number two team in the country. Arizona has lost and yet they play in the Pac 12 but Wichita State is still undefeated. So I don’t understand that and their playing angry and they want their respect.

They don’t feel like their getting the kind of respect that is due to them, they’re game against Northern Iowa and they haven’t gone to the tournament more than a few times by now. Don’t think that Nor Iowa is a chump team they came in and played hard too, they got some tremendous scoring production from their starting five.

Stanford Tops Washington State

By Joe Lami

Friday night marked yet another win for the Cardinal (22-1,11-0) as they got past the Washington State Cougars (12-11,6-5) 77-69.  Stanford was held to just 28 first half points, but came out of the half strong putting up 49, and that would be just enough for them to gain their 21st consecutive win.  Stanford has never lost to Washington State, and that trend continues as well with an overall record of 56-0.

Chiney Ogwumike had a career game, leading all scorers with 36 points, tying her previous career high.  She also brought down 17 rebounds.  Two other Cardinal scorers also found double digits as, Juniors Taylor Greenfield and Amber Orrange added 11 respectively.  Greenfield also just landed one rebound shy of recording a double double. Freshman, Karlie Samuelson continues to impress, as she added nine.

Washington State saw strong performances from their stars as well, Lia Galderia led the Cougars with 21 points.  Other starters, Tia Presley finished with 20 points and Sage Romberg had 12.  The Cardinal held the Cougars just seven bench points, making a huge difference.

Stanford also dominated the boards once again, as they out-rebounded the Cougars 46-30.  Not a single Washington State player got into, double digit rebounds.  The only downside in the Cardinal’s performance was that once again is that they turned the ball over way too much, finishing with 14 turnovers.

Stanford hopes to continue their dominance over the Pac-12, as they travel across the state of Washington to take on the Huskies on Sunday.

Michelle Richardson on the NCAA Cal’s upset over Arizona adds to the best in college ball

by Michelle Richardson

Cal 60 Arizona 58: This game was a shocker to me of all teams that took Arizona down it was a Cal Berkeley team that did that and yes I still can’t believe it Cal took them down. Yes it was on Haas Pavilion but you really didn’t expect that this game was really tight. It was a tight game all the way through. The first half basically The Bears held Arizona to 29 points in the second half.

The Bears just ended up beating Arizona by a bucket, Arizona was looking beyond Cal and at Cal the fans went crazy. Usually the Bearcats challenge teams but it just wasn’t enough as the Bearcats top scorers Kaleb Tarczewski 18, T.J. McConnell 13, and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson with 10. For Cal’s top three scorers Justin Cobbs 19, David Kravish 14, Richard Solomon with 12.

That jumper that Cobbs hit with 0.9 seconds to win that game is going to go down as one of those “oh my God where were you at” moments for Cal fans. It’s going to be one of those moments, the problem with Arizona was they really didn’t get a lot of help. There were a few people doing the scoring and litterally that was mostly Tarczewski and McConnell. Those were the only two players that scored for the Bearcats and they were looking for Eric Gordon but he was held to just eight points.

Syracuse 91 Duke 89: You knew this game was going to be spectacular welcome to the ACC Syracuse (21-0) and Duke and these two teams are not new to facing each other but their new to the ACC. They came in as championship like teams they’ve been to the Final Four before and I really like the way these teams let the ACC know that their in it to win it.

Right now Syracuse is the top dog in the ACC, number two Syracuse who will be polled at number one on Monday is just on a roll they’re playing so well and what can you say about them with top scorers like T.J.Fair with 28 points on Sunday, Jerami Grant 24 points, and Trevor Cooney and Tyler Ennis both finishing with 14.

Everybody was in this game from the beginning, even guys who were on the bench but that last second shot that forced the game into overtime that’s when that gets your heart going. That last second shot from Grant to take it into overtime, “it’ll make you say, are you kidding me, this can’t be happening.” That’s the thing that makes the college game so great when things like that happen.

Cincinnati (21-2, 10-0) 50 U South Florida (11-1) 45: It was a five point differential for the Bearcats in the win against the Bulls on Saturday. In this game USF gave Cincy a scare, the Bulls gave the Bearcats a run for their money but Cincinnati topped it off with a five point win. Top scorers for the winning Bearcats 18 for Sean Kilpatrick, Justin Jackson 15, and Ge’Lawn Guyn with eight points.

It was kind of an even game but what made it close there were quite a few turnovers on both sides, and the Bearcats were able to hold on and make the AAC. The next four games of the Bearcats schedule is Connecitcut, SMU, Houston, and UCF. Saturday Feb 22 Cincinnati will face Louisville

South Florida is one of the top dogs in the conference and you kind of have to wait for this kind of excitment that’s waiting to happen and it’s going to happen and can’t wait to see it happen and can’t wait to get into the tournaments I’m going to lose my mind.

Stanford Sweeps Battle of the Bay Series

By: Joe Lami

The Stanford Cardinal (21-1, 10-0) took the one-hour bus ride across the bay on Sunday to take on their arch rival in Cal (14-7, 6-4).  Stanford was looking for the win to complete the sweep after they defeated the Bears on Thursday at Maples Pavilion by the final score of 70-64.  They got just that, defeating the Bears on Sunday by the final score of 79-64.

California came into this game with some confidence, even though they lost the game at Stanford on Thursday, as they were able to comeback from a 30-point deficit to only lose by five.  Their confidence showed early, as they jumped on Stanford first.  Brittany Boyd, the Bears leading scorer from Thursday, was the first to score, as she hit an early three to give the Bears the lead.  It wouldn’t take much longer for Stanford to answer, as Freshman Lili Thompson hit a three of her own.  The game was tied at three just 1:30 into the game.

The game would go back and forth for the next eight minutes until Stanford took the 13-12 lead with the help of a Chiney Ogwumike layup.  There would be no more lead changes after that, as Stanford was able to hold the lead the rest of the game.  Stanford would extend their lead to ten going into the half, as they led the Bears 35-25.

Coming out of halftime, the teams would continue to trade baskets.  Stanford did end up winning the second half 44-39, with the help of free throws.  Stanford ended the game shooting 24 of 30 from the foul line.

Ogwumike led all scorers with 29; she also added eight rebounds, four assists and two blocks, for what was one of her most impressive all-around performances of the year.  Karlie Samuelson continues to shine off of the bench, as the Freshman scored 16 points.  Amber Orrange was the only other Cardinal to get into double figures, as she added 13.  Mikaela Ruef had another outstanding performance contributing in everyway.  The red-shirt senior had 11 rebounds, nine points, five assists and a block.

Boyd once again led the Bears, as she finished the game with 20 points.  Other starter, Mikayla Lyles, had 16 points.  Reshanda Gray was held scoreless on Thursday and only added seven on Sunday.

California did one thing really well, as they held the Cardinal to only three offensive rebounds.  Stanford ended up winning the rebound battle 33-30.

The Bears continue to slump in Pac-12 play, as their handed their seventh loss of the season and the fourth in the last six games.  Cal’s record drops to 14-7, and they take on the Huskies of Washington in Seattle on Friday.

Stanford continues their amazing run, as they gain their 21st win of the season and the 20th straight.  The number four team in the country takes on the Washington State Cougars next.
