Sharks silence the Wild 4-0

After being relieved early in the San Jose Sharks’ last game, goalie Martin Jones replied by keeping the Minnesota Wild at bay 4-0 at the Xcel Energy Center Tuesday with his first shutout of the season.

Jones made 26 saves including a crazy stick block against Mikko Koivu in the third.

The Sharks are now amidst a season-high five-game winning streak as they clicked on all cylinders. San Jose is 6-1 in their previous seven games, with an average of three goals each game.

Logan Couture was a game-high +3 (Brent Burns too) with two goals. Couture also had a goal last game, with a total of six points in his last three games. Playing in his ninth game, rookie Lukas Radil had a goal and assist. “Ever shift and every game, pretty excited to be here,” he commented.

The Sharks had their only penalty in the first period, when Timo Meier got into his first fight.

In a span of about half a minute during the second, the 0-0 game quickly swung in favor of San Jose.

Radil took the pass from Radim Simek off the end boards and parallel to the goal line, Radil barely looked as he made a perfectly timed pass to Couture, who went top shelf at 9:49.

Tomas Hertl soon after made a long pass to set up Joe Pavelski’s breakaway goal versus goalie Devan Dubnyk. Hertl had two assists and has nine points in his last six games.  

Five seconds after the last second period penalty expired, which was 51 seconds into the third, Couture tallied again. It started with a pass from Erik Karlsson, described by Couture after as “nasty.” Karlsson made a no-look backwards pass between his legs to Hertl, who then found Couture in front of the defenders, as Couture buried the puck short side.

The Wild hit the post at least twice.

With under five minutes left in the game, Koivu had a clear look at the net, but Jones was able to get his stick out in time for the crucial block.

Up Next: With their 2-0 road trip in the books, the Sharks head back home for four games, starting with the Winnipeg Jets Thursday, Dec. 20 at 7:30 pm.

Sharks Beat Blackhawks 7-3 in Chicago

The San Jose Sharks defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 7-3 Sunday in a much-needed road win at the United Center. After a shaky first few minutes, the Sharks took over with goals from Melker Karlsson, Marcus Sorensen, Evander Kane, Barclay Goodrow, Kevin Labanc, Logan Couture and Tomas Hertl. In all, 13 Sharks earned points in the game, six of them earning more than one. For Chicago, goals came from Alex DeBrincat, Dylan Strome and Brendan Perlini.

Both teams used both of their goalies, with San Jose’s Martin Jones being replaced after giving up three goals on four shots in the first period, and Chicago’s Corey Crawford leaving the game after an injury in the first period. Sharks’ Aaron Dell did not give up a goal on 16 shots, while Blackhawks’ Cam Ward made 30 saves on 35 shots. San Jose’s special teams were perfect with four penalty kills and two goals on two power plays.

After the game, Sharks forward Logan Couture commented on how the team has improved lately:

We’re playing the right way now. There’s less cheating, less chances being taken in bad areas of the ice. Defensively I think we’ve played some very strong hockey, and when we do that, it may be hard to realize but it always leads to offense. You’re always going to score more goals when you’re defending well. It’s just the way this game works, you don’t think it when you’re on the ice, but that’s the way it works.

Sharks head coach Peter DeBoer talked about his fourth line of Melker Karlsson, Barclay Goodrow and Lukas Radil after the game: “Melker consistently gives me the same game. You know, his production maybe isn’t there all the time but I think you know what you’re getting from him every time he puts his uniform on and he’s going to do whatever he can to help you win a game. You know, that fourth line has some chemistry and they’re making a difference in games. That’s the first time we’ve had that in a while so it feels good.”

The Blackhawks scored first and last in a goal-laden first period. In the first four minutes, Chicago scored twice. First, Alex DeBrincat got his 14th of the season at 2:34. The Sharks were on a change as Erik Gustafsson carried the puck into the neutral zone. He made a pass to the Sharks blue line where DeBrincat waited and DeBrincat took the shot from just over that blue line. The puck trickled through Martin Jones. Less than one  minute later, Dylan Strome defelcted a shot from Connor Murphy that came from above the faceoff circle. Assists went to Murphy and Patrick Kane.

The Sharks got one back, courtesy of Melker Karlsson at 9:58. Lukas Radil and Barclay Goodrow caused a turnover in the neutral zone, allowing Brent Burns to take the puck and send it away from the Sharks zone to Radil near the Chicago blue line. Radil made a quick cross-ice pass to Karlsson. Karlsson took the shot from inside the faceoff circle and beat Corey Crawford over the pad. It was Karlsson’s third of the season, with assists to Radil and Burns.

The Sharks tied it up with their next shot less than a minute later. Joe Thornton stole the puck in the neutral zone and gave it back to Justin Braun. Braun moved the puck quickly to Kevin Labanc, who sent it cross-ice to Thornton. Thornton found Marcus Sorensen in front of the net. Sorensen used a backhand to sneak the puck under Crawford fr his sixth of the season. Assists went to Thornton and Labanc.

Chicago retook the lead at 12:54 of the period. Brendan Perlini scored off of an ugly play that started with a breakaway by Dylan Sikura. Sikura got tangled up with Justin Braun and fell on his way to the net, but he continued to drive the puck forward. Meanwhile, Perlini won a race against Marc-Edouard Vlasic and tapped the loose puck around Jones’ skate. Assists went to Sikura and Brent Seabrook.

The Sharks switched goalies at this point, putting Aaron Dell in net.

With 1:30 left in the period, Corey Crawford was bowled over by Dylan Strome after Strome tried to slip between Logan Couture and Evander Kane as they converged on the net. Kane was called for goaltender interference. Strome was called for slashing Couture. Crawford left the game and Cam Ward came in. A tripping penalty 44 seconds later on Timo Meier turned the 4-on-4 into a 4-on-3, which carried over into the second period, but none of the penalties altered the score.

The Sharks tied it back up 4:21 into the second period with a power play goal from Evander Kane. Chicago was short-handed for playing with a broken stick, attributed to David Kampf. Kevin Labanc took a stick to the eye early in the power play. It was not observed by officials but Labanc had to leave for repairs.

With under 30 seconds left in the power play, Brent Burns took a shot from above the faceoff circle. The shot came off of Ward’s pads and went right up the middle to where Kane was waiting to swat it back in. It was Kane’s 10th of the season, with assists to Burns and Erik Karlsson.

Barclay Goodrow gave the Sharks their first lead of the game at 7:36 of the period. After a great shift from the Sharks’ fourth line, Justin Braun took a shot from the blue line that went off of Goodrow who was screening Cam Ward. It was Goodrow’s fifth of the season, with assists to Braun and Melker Karlsson.

Logan Couture stretched the Sharks’ lead out to two with his 11th of the season at 16:16. After a nice keep-in by Joe Pavelski up on the blue line, Evander Kane kept the puck away from two Blackhawks below the goal line before getting the puck up to Brenden Dillon on the blue line. Dillon took the shot and Couture deflected it over Ward’s shoulder. Assists went to Dillon and Kane.

The Sharks scored a second power play goal at 13:03 of the third period, with Chicago’s Patrick Kane in the box for tripping. Tomas Hertl kept the puck in at the corner, then moved it along the blue line to Burns. Burns juggled it a bit, just keeping it on the right side of the line. Burns then moved down the slot, threatening a shot, before passing it to Kevin Labanc. Labanc caught the pass just above the hash marks and beat Ward high on the short side. It was Labanc’s fourth of the season, with assists to Burns and Hertl.

Tomas Hertl got on the board with the Sharks’ seventh of the game at 18:27. The Blackhawks were pushing hard in the last couple of minutes, but Timo Meier broke the puck out and took it down behind the Chicago net. Meier put the puck in front of the net, where it came out to Erik Karlsson for a shot. That one came back out for Meier to shoot, but he broke his stick. It went back below the goal line to Logan Couture, who found Hertl coming in for his shot. Couture got the only assist on that one.

The Sharks next play on Tuesday in Minnesota against the Wild at 5:00 PM PT.

#1 The San Jose Sharks pay homage to the United Center Sunday night and the Chicago Blackhawks. The Hawks have lost nine of their last 10 games, including a game that went thud for them against the Winnipeg Jets on Friday night in a 4-3 overtime loss. What has been the problems for the Hawks?

#2 The Hawks had won three Stanley Cups between 2010-2015, but they’re a different team now and with their losing streak, the Sharks, who have been gaining a full head of steam, could pretty much put this game away on Sunday.

#3 The Blackhawks fired their head coach Joel Quenneville on November 6th. Talk has it that Qunneville and team general manager Stan Bowman did not get along. Since the firing the Hawks have been 6-6-1 under new head coach Jeremy Colliton, but the loses are mounting.

#4 For the San Jose Sharks’ Timo Mieier has had the hot hand and has had multiple goal games and the Sharks are going hot, winning five out of their last six games.

#5 The Sharks’ Martin Jones has been the difference maker during the win streak for San Jose and has been protecting the net and on some nights standing on his head.

It’s Two Times the Timo in Sharks’ 3-2 Win Over Stars

The San Jose Sharks scored three unanswered goals to comeback from a 1-0 deficit before hanging on for 3-2 win over the visiting Dallas Stars Thursday night at the SAP Center. San Jose has now won three games in a row after losing their previous four. Timo Meier scored a pair of goals to continue his torrid stretch and Joe Thornton scored his fifth of the season. Logan Couture had a multi-assist night, his 14th and 15th points in 13 games, and Martin Jones 20 made saves.

Both teams engaged in a defensive standstill after 20 minutes, allowing a combined eight shots on goal with zero goals. Dallas broke through early in the second, with Radek Faksa scoring his fifth goal 3:35 into the middle frame.

After that, it was Timo time. The Swiss sophomore blasted a point shot past Stars goalie Anton Khudobin with 3:40 left in the second. He potted San Jose’s next goal 12:50 into the 3rd, driving hard to the net and redirecting a Logan Couture pass into goal for a 2-1 lead. Meier now has eight points in his last six games.

Joe Thornton scored an easy redirect just over five minutes later for his fifth goal of the season after Radim Simek’s point shot hit a blocker and ricocheted to the future Hall of Famer. Marcus Sorensen also added an assist on the Sharks 3-1 goal. Thornton was a game-time decision after missing practice Wednesday.

Miro Heiskanen scored his seventh of the year, victimizing the Sharks with 7:36 left in regulation on a bad line change, but San Jose would hold with the net empty for Dallas to pick up the win. They next travel to Chicago to face the reeling Blackhawks Sunday at 4:00 pm PST.

#1 Last Monday against New Jersey, the San Jose Sharks were able to take advantage, scoring three goals when Timo Meier scored twice and Radim Simek scored his first goal of the season helped the Sharks get a three-goal win over NJ 5-3.

#2 Joe Pavelski and Tomas Hertl also had two-point nights for the Sharks.

#3 The Sharks had been a little slow on picking up the pace, but were able to open things up against New Jersey with Timo Meier firing up the offense.

#4 Tomas Hertl added a power play goal at 5:38 in the third period and goaltender Martin Jones stopped 22 shots.

#5 Thursday night, the Dallas Stars are at SAP and the Sharks hope to get some of the same support they got on Monday.

Meier’s Pair, Simek’s First Lead Sharks to 5-2 Win Over Devils

The San Jose Sharks continued to stay hot following a coaching staff reorganization, winning their fourth game of the last five against the New Jersey Devils Monday night at the SAP Center. Timo Meier scored twice and Radim Simek scored his first NHL goal to give the Sharks a 5-2 win over the Devils. Joe Pavelski and Tomas Hertl also had two-point nights for the Sharks.

San Jose looked like the weaker team in the early going after New Jersey scored on a fluke goal 12:05 into the period. Drew Stafford threw the puck on net from the goal line, finding daylight between Martin Jones and the post for a 1-0 lead.

San Jose hadn’t generated much offense to that point, not finding a shot on net for the majority of the first 10 minutes. That all changed after a heady play by Timo Meier. Meier stole the puck from a New Jersey skater entering the Sharks zone and went the other way, ultimately beating Keith Kinkaid from the right faceoff dot to tie the game with 4:09 left in the first.

Joe Pavelski scored with just under two minutes left in the period after Brenden Dillon’s point shot ricocheted off Kinkaid. The captain picked up the loose puck and slid it into the back of the net for his team-best 20th goal. Pavelski has now scored 20 goals in a season for the 10th time in his career.

Radim Simek picked up his first NHL goal 7:19 into the middle period, launching a point-shot through traffic for a 3-1 Sharks lead. Lukas Radil, a fellow rookie, picked up his first career assist after scoring his first goal over the weekend.

Andy Greene’s drive-by tip 11:01 into the second pulled the Devils within one goal before Meier’s second created some space. Joonas Donskoi fed Meier streaking up the wing, allowing the Swiss forward to once again show off his laser of a shot. Meier’s wrister beat Kinkaid glove side before bouncing off the back of the net and out with 5:08 left in the period.

Tomas Hertl added a power play goal after picked up a rebound in the slot eight seconds into the man-advantage with 5:38 left in the game to effectively ice the game. Martin Jones made 22 saves to preserve the win.

San Jose welcomes the Dallas Stars to the Shark Tank Thursday night, looking to continue the winning ways. Game time is 7:30 pm PST.

Sharks squeak past Coyotes, win 5-3 in the desert

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Asked about how 28-year-old rookie Lukas Radil came through with the go-ahead goal for San Jose in the third period Saturday against Arizona, Evander Kane responded, “He’s 28?”

Radil’s first career NHL goal provided the go-ahead goal for San Jose Saturday, as the Sharks held off a charge from Arizona and edged the Coyotes 4-3 at the Gila River Arena.

“For him to get his first goal and the way he got his first goal, late in the third period in a tie game, that’s great,” Kane said following the Sharks’ 4-3 win over the Coyotes. “Every time he’s in the lineup, he always brings something positive. He’s a big, strong kid who wins a lot of battles.”

Radil, operating from behind the net, flipped a backhand shot over the left shoulder of Coyotes goaltender Adin Hill and into the top shelf at 14:13  of the third period.

“It was very exciting,” Radil said. “I had a dream to play in the NHL, and the dream came true. I scored a goal; the team wins, so it couldn’t be a better day.

“Our line had a couple of chances, but we won, and that’s what’s more important.”

Sharks coach Peter DeBoer said, “We needed something like that, someone coming off the bench to give us something. We’ve been waiting a while for something like that, so it was nice timing. The guy has worked hard to get here to this level and for him to get his first NHL goal like that, it’s pretty rewarding.”

Seconds later, an apparent Arizona goal was waived off. After a video review, the original call was upheld.

Tomas Hertl popped in an empty-net goal at 19:09 for the Sharks, who outshot Arizona 33-20. Aaron Dell stopped 17 of 20 shots for San Jose, while Adin Hill made 32 saves in a losing effort for Arizona.

Trailing 3-2 after two periods, the Coyotes got the equalizer at 5:45 of the third period when Richard Panik’s shot from the left circle went through Dell’s 5-hole.

“We were a little depleted but the guys gave it their all,” Coyotes Coach Rick Tocchet said. “We had a couple of chances there at 3-3, and they get that goal (by Radil). It was a weird goal. Then, we thought we got it back, but it was inconclusive and then we tried to make a push.”

San Jose opened the scoring at 14:36 of the first period when Joe Pavelski redirected a low slapper from the left point by Brenden Dillon. Pavelski’s 19th goal of the season beat Coyotes goaltender Adin Hill to the stick side.

Less than a minute later, the Sharks made it 2-0 on Logan Couture’s 10th goal. The Coyotes were unable to clear the puck from their own zone, and Couture’s breakaway shot from the slot found Hill’s 5-hole at 15:26.

The Sharks outshot Arizona 14-7 in the first period.

At 5:10 of the second period, San Jose extended its lead to 3-0. Evander Kane broke up a clearing pass, and won the race to the loose puck, beating Hill on the short side just above his right skate for an unassisted tally.

After the Sharks’ Kevin Labanc got the gate for slashing at 6:30 of the second period, Arizona scored 15 seconds into the power play on Nick Schmaltz’s fifth goal of the season. Schmaltz, parked on the right edge of the goal crease, took a centering pass out of the left corner by Clayton Keller and beat Dell on the glove side.

Arizona struck again at 10:43 of the second period when Jakob Chychrun’s shot from the point was redirected by Brad Richardson to the right of Dell. Richardson’s eighth goal of the season pulled the Coyotes to within 3-2.

“We found a way to win,” DeBoer said. “Right now, it seems like the chances we give up wind up in the net. I’m not saying they’re bad goals — it just seems like with the opportunities we give up, the puck is going in our net with teams putting a lot of pressure on us.

“There’s still a lot more good than bad, but there’s still a lot of work left to do.”

SHARK BITES: San Jose C Joe Thornton passed Steve Yzerman for 18th place on the NHL’s all-time games played list (1,515). Thornton is also two assists from tying Marcel Dionne (1,040) for 10th place on the league’s all-time assist list. … Arizona’s Conor Garland made his NHL debut, skating on the Coyotes’ second line with Derek Stepan and Christian Fletcher. … The announced attendance at Gila River Arena was 13,780.

Sharks Fall to Stars 3-2

The San Jose Sharks lost 3-2 to the Dallas Stars at the American Airlines Center on Friday. The game was tied 1-1 going into a three-goal third period, with the Sharks scoring first and last. Stars goals came from Mattias Janmark, Miro Heiskanen and Brett Ritchie. Stars goaltender Ben Bishop made 41 saves for the win. Sharks goals came from Evander Kane and Logan Couture, with goalie Martin Jones making 27 saves in the loss.

After the game, Joe Pavelski talked about how the team is improving despite some of the recent losses:

It’s just about lengthening our stretches of playing good hockey, which we’ve been doing little bit in our games. Still going a good direction. We had good energy I thought, you know, up and down the lineup for most of the night. You know, there’s always momentum swings and I think we’be done a better job lately of handling them.

Evander Kane described a factor in the team’s inconsistency: “I think it’s just spells throughout the course of the season where I think we’re just a little too relaxed and we need to ramp up the intensity a little bit on the ice.

Sharks head coach Peter DeBoer considered it a fairly good road game from the Sharks: “It’s a small margin right now. I don’t think they worked harder than us, I thought we played a pretty good road game. You know, we’re just finding the wrong side of that line right now and we’ve got to get on the right side of it.”

The Sharks scored the only goal in the first period, at 9:22. Brenden Dillon carried the puck out of the Sharks zone and through the neutral zone, then passed it to Joonas Donskoi, who was on his way into the offensive zone with Erik Karlsson and Evander Kane. Donskoi passed to Karlsson in the slot, he sent it left to Kane, and Kane took the shot, catching Bishop as he came across. It was Kane’s eighth goal of the season, with assists to Karlsson and Donskoi.

The Sharks outshot the Stars 13-5 in the first period. They had one penalty to kill in the first, and did so without allowing a shot on goal. That was a hooking penalty against Logan Couture. They killed another penalty right at the start of the second period, a delay of game against Marcus Sorensen for sending the puck out of play. The Sharks power play was unsuccessful.

The Sharks lost a goal to an early whistle at 4:09 of the second. The puck trickled across the line after Sorensen took a shot off the rush, but the whistle blew while the puck was still under Bishop.

The Stars tied the game at 14:05 of the second, when Mattias Janmark got a break during a change. Erik Karlsson had flipped the puck down the ice right as most of the Sharks went to change. Tomas Hertl was not able to get control of the puck one on three. It went back the other way, finding Janmark just off the bench and breaking through the zone. He beat Jones on the blocker side. It was Janmark’s second goal of the season with an assist to Roman Polak.

The shot clock evened out in the second period, with the teams almost tied 15-14 Dallas.

The Sharks had an early power play in the third but did not get a shot on goal. After the power play, the Stars brought a lot of pressure and had the Sharks scrambling on defense. That ended about two minutes later, when Miro Heiskanen gave the Stars the lead with a shot from the boards. Assists went to Tyler Pitlick and Radek Faksa.

The Stars extended their lead less than two minutes later. A zone entry went awry for the Sharks when Heiksanen knocked the puck away from Melker Karlsson and Jason Spezza passed the puck to a fast-moving Devin Shore. Shore took the puck into the zone two on one with Brett Ritchie. Shore made the pass and Ritchie put the puck under Martin Jones as he came across. Assists went to Shore and Spezza.

The Sharks got one back very quickly, at 6:59. Erik Karlsson took a blue line pass from Dillon and took the shot. It went off of Couture’s stick as he battled for position in front of Bishop. It was Couture’s ninth of the season with assists to Karlsson and Dillon.

The Sharks pulled Jones from the net with under two minutes to go but could not tie the game back up.

The Sharks next play on Saturday in Glendale against the Arizona Coyotes at 5:00 PM PT. The Sharks will see the Dallas Stars again next week, on the 13th in San Jose.

On the Sharks podcast with Mary Lisa:

#1 The San Jose Sharks won their second straight game against the Carolina Hurricanes at SAP Center on Wednesday night with a four-goal win.

#2 This was a demonstration of their healthy offense coming back as opposed to some of the four tough loses they had on their last road trip.

#3 The Sharks Joe Thornton and Timo Meier each had three points against the Canes and Radim Simek picked up his first career NHL goal.

#4 The Sharks goaltender Martin Jones stopped 39 out of 40 shots and faced a lot of offense from the Canes, but stood on his head for the win.

#5 Up next, the Sharks are back on the road to face the Dallas Stars on Friday and Arizona on Saturday.
