That’s Amaury’s Podcast, News, & Commentary: Giants excited to get Cueto; Rose accepts his lifetime ban, O’s Showalter asked whose his favorite Star Wars Character at fanfest

On the News and Commentary with Amaury the San Francisco Giants have been busy this past week with the signing of pitcher Jeff Samardjiza from the White Sox and now a big colossal contract with pitcher Johnny Cueto from the Kansas City Royals. The Giants look as if they have their five man rotation set for 2016.

Also Amaury comments about how it was a mistake to continue the lifetime ban of former Cincinnati Red outfielder/manager Pete Rose. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred on Monday said that Rose will continued to be banned from the game. Rose in a statement said he accepted the Commissioner’s decision and will continue his ban from the game.

Star Wars the Force Awakens which opens this Friday was the topic of conversation at the Baltimore Orioles Fanfest with Orioles manager Bucky Showalter. Young kids lined up to take the microphone and ask the O’s skipper questions in a Q & A session. One kid asked who was Showalter’s favorite Star Wars Character and Showalter replied “I don’t do Star Wars” and another kid asked Bucky why he never smiles, the manager never gave an answer and just shrugged his shoulders.

San Francisco Giants report: Cueto to the Giants

By Jeremy Kahn

photo hngn.com newly acquired SF Giant pitcher Johnny Cueto

After signing Jeff Samardzjia to a long term deal, you would think that the San Francisco Giants would be done signing starting pitchers; however General Manager Bobby Evans was not done with starting pitching.

The Giants went out there, and signed Johnny Cueto, who helped lead the Kansas City Royals to their first World Series Championship in 30 years in 2015 after being acquired by the Royals from the Cincinnati Reds in July of 2015.

Cueto’s deal is for six years for $130 million dollars with a opt out clause after two seasons.

In his career, Cueto is 96-70 with a 3.30 ERA over eight years experience with the Reds and the Royals, and was 4-7 with a 4.76 ERA after being acquired by the Royals for their run to the World Series.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: For Pete’s sake let him in, the lifetime ban continues for Pete Rose

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez

photo sportsillustrated.cnn.com of former Cincinnati Red Pete Rose

Pete Rose is 74 years old, won three World Series, was selected to 17 All-Star Games, and finished with 4,256 hits, more than anybody in history. Today Commissioner Fred Manfred upheld the lifetime ban on Pete Rose, who will eventually die and never be inducted in Cooperstown. Does that mean that guys like Barry Bonds , Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Rafeal Palmeiro and Roger Clemens (among others of the steroids era) will also be banned?

I believe in forgiveness, and Rose paid his due to society for a quarter of a century, but obviously Major League Baseball doesn’t believe in forgiveness in a country that is mostly guided by Judeo-Christian principles. According to the New York Times article today, it was reported that Mr. Manfred said Mr. Rose informed him at the September meeting that he continues to bet on baseball, which he can legally do in Las Vegas, where he lives. That disclosure clearly concerned Mr. Manfred, as did what he described as Mr. Rose’s inability, at the meeting, to admit that he not only bet on games as a manager but also as a player. Obviously betting on baseball is the cardinal sin, for the game that is called The National Pastime.

In my book if you bet on the game, while you are a player or a manager, and they banned you for life to ever be in the Hall of Fame, then you should also be banned for life if you took illicit drugs during your playing career. So the argument will be: what is worse, betting on the games while you played and/or managed, or using drugs like steroids while you play? In one case (betting) you can fix the game to your advantage, or in the other case if you took steroids this helped you (as an individual) hitting the ball further than without the substance. Both ways is cheating in the game.

When Mr. Rose was first banned from the game, he insisted he had not bet on baseball, although in accepting the ban he implicitly acknowledged wrongdoing on his part. In his prime Pete Rose made, $1 (one) million per year. Today a rookie’s salary is $500,000 per year. Pete could not pay the attorney’s fees that today’s superstar players can and he could not defend himself from his accusers like today’s very wealthy players. The players accused of using steroids hired some of the best attorneys in the country, and we all know when you have good attorneys, you can always beat City Hall. Best example, O.J Simpson, who killed two people and the walked free, but then his own ego and stupidity landed him in prison where he is today and where he will probably die.

If you witnessed Pete Rose playing days, you have to agree that he is a Hall of Fame player. In my opinion Pete Rose belongs in Cooperstown in the Hall of Fame of Baseball, not the Hall of Saints of Baseball.

That is just my opinion, I hope you agree, but if you do not, I also respect you.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Dodgers and Giants in bidding war to get Zack Grienke

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez
photo credit: inquisitor.com of Dodgers pitcher Zack Grienke
SAN FRANCISCO–Now that the Red Sox signed David Price for 7-years and $217 million, that is $31 million per year, the next big-time pitcher to be signed will probably be  Zack Greinke, who is two years older than Price and the Los Angeles Dodgers(team that Greinke has pitched for and had sensational numbers)and the San Francisco Giants are now involved in a bidding war to sign Greinke.
Grienke probably be getting around $32 to $33 million dollars per year, as a starter who gives you 30-32 appearances that is one of the best jobs in the world. There is always a “surprise”team, but the two western divisional rivals are going for Zack Greinke, the Dodgers are trying to keep him as the best one-two-pitching combos with Clayton Kernshaw (and the Giants trying to put him together with Bumgarner. This could be the difference between the Dodgers winning a third consecutive divisional title, or the Giants keeping the World Series hopes every two years.
This could be a key week for Zack Greinke and his future, will the hated Dodger become a Giant? To get into a bidding war with the Los Angels Dodgers is not a winning proposition most of the time, but nonetheless, the Giants need solid starting pitching behind Bumgarner and guys like Jake Peavy and Mike Leake and even Tim Lincecum are really unpredictable and not getting much younger. Rookie pitcher Chris Heston(12-11   3.95)was a pleasant surprise for the Giants and he will be in their rotation, but he is not a “top of the rotation”type of guy, at least not in 2016, so the San Francisco team. Starting pitcher and an outfielder, (preferably a left fielder)are on the Giants #1Christmas list this month.
Zack Greinke’s deal could be done this week, and it is very possible he will stay in the NY West.

That’s Amaury’s Podcast, News, and Commentary: Bonds closing in on hitting coach position in Miami

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez

photo credit: Bing Images former SF Giant Barry Bonds press conference spring training during his playing days

It’s looking more likely that former San Francisco Giants outfielder Barry Bonds will get a position as a hitting coach of the Miami Marlins. Frank Menechino who is currently the hitting coach in Miami is expected to stay on for the 2016 season and the Marlins will use two batting coaches.

Sources say that the Marlins will monitor how things would work using two batting coaches and see how the players respond to the two coaches. The Marlins who are looking for improvement in hitting up and down the line up and wanting to get some numbers that could lead them to post season is a work in progress.

Bonds whose expertise in hitting would come with some value. Bonds was noted for pointing out what pitch was coming before a pitcher threw it and sometimes can even tell if a hitter was going to connect based on how the pitcher was throwing. He also used to be able to chart where a pitcher was going to throw the ball in certain situations in the count.

Bonds however has a cloud of suspicion hanging over him with his use of steroids and drug enhancements that he claimed he didn’t know he was using during his days in San Francisco. Bonds has been the face of the steroids era and teams balked at picking him up for any kind of job. The Marlins are sensing the time is right and would like to see how the media, the fans, the players, the front offices and MLB officials respond to baseball’s all time home run leader returning to the game since he retired in 2007.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Dodgers sign first minority manager in team history

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez

LOS ANGELES–The Los Angeles Dodgers, the historic franchise that in
1947 that broke the color barrier by signing Jackie Robinson, has
inked their first minority manager.

It is Dave Roberts, in a way a surprise, Roberts was not mentioned as the one that was going to replace Don Mattingly, now the skipper of the Miami Marlins, and many believed Roberts was a long shot for the big profile job.

The Dodgers will introduce Roberts
to the media at a press conference at Dodgers Stadium on
December 1. He has never managed before at any level, his
last job in baseball was as a bench coach for manager Bud
Black in San Diego. Interestingly enough, Don Mattingy the
Dodgers previous manager, is the only one to have won 3
divisional titles in their franchise.

Dave Roberts(43)is the youngest Los Angeles Dodgers
manager since Walter Alston(42)when he was named manager of
the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1954. Roberts becomes the 8th
manager in past 17 years for the boys in blue. Born in
Okinawa, Japan, his father was a former US Marine and his
mother a Japanese-American. Dave Roberts played at UCLA, and
lives in Vista, outside of San Diego.

Dave Roberts is currently the third minority manager in
major league baseball; Fredi Gonzalez, born in Cuba(Atlanta
Braves)and recently appointed manager of the Cincinnati Reds,
Dusty Baker, African-American.

Crawford inks new contract

By Jeremy Kahn

SAN FRANCISCO–The year 2015 will be a year that Bay Area and San Francisco Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford that he will never forget as long as he is playing baseball, or for the rest of his life.

Crawford signed a contract extension with the Giants that will keep him in the Orange and Black until the end of the 2021 season, as his contract extension is for six years and worth $75 million dollars.

There is a no trade clause in the contract, and no option years.

During the 2015 season, Crawford hit a career-high 21 home runs, while batting .256 and drove in 84 runs. Crawford also won his first Gold Glove.

“Brandon is an exceptionally talented baseball player who has earned this through his hard work, dedication and competitive spirit,” general manager Bobby Evans said. “He took great strides both offensively and defensively last season, winning his first-ever Gold Glove and Silver Slugger award. This is a great day for Brandon and his family, for the Giants and for our fans.”

Pending a physical, the Giants will sign outfielder Kyle Blanks that will include an invitation to Spring Training

That’s Amaury’s podcast, news and commentary: Off season MLB updates Dusty to manage Washington; When will Dodgers get a decent TV contract;

On That’s Amaury’s podcast Dusty Baker takes the new position with the Washington Nationals as their new manager. Nats Bryce Harper calls Jonathan Paplebon to smooth things over from September dugout strangling that took place when the two started arguing during a rough patch in the Nats season.

The LA Dodgers fans are still having a hard time finding their local nine on Time/Warner cable and the Dodgers want to find some way to improve their product. The Dodger telecasts are limited to certain homes in the second largest market in the country. They can’t cover every area in LA. So the Dodgers could look into renegotiating their contract.

Speaking of the Dodgers ex-Dodger manager Don Mattingly now the new skipper at the Miami Marlins will take the reigns and he comes from a large market team. He was successful with the Dodgers taking them to the playoffs three years in a row the only manager to take the Dodgers to the playoffs three years in a row.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Kansas City Royals World Series Champions best definition of “team”

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez

AP Photo KC Royals World Series celebration at Citi Field in NYC

They won the pennant in 2014 but lost the World Series to the San Francisco Giants, they left the winning run at third base in game seven against San Francisco and never stop thinking about that game. They reported to Spring Training in Arizona, with just one mission, winning it all this year, and they did. A team that came back eight times during the postseason,(tying the LA Angels who also won 8 games in the postseason, although they lost the World Series to San Francisco) and won the World Series in five games. In a previous article here I picked them to win in six games. With all the great starting pitching that the New York Mets have and will have for the future, the National League Champions could not stop the Royals. The Royals are the best definition of the word “team”.

Their great young catcher, Salvador Perez(who made the last out of the 2014 World Series) wins the MVP of this World Series. Game five was started by Edison Volquez, who previously started and won game two in Kansas City. His father passed away before he took the mound that night at Kansas City, and was told of his father passing, after that game. He left the next day for the Dominican Republic for his Father’s funeral who was 63 years old and died of heart failure. Volquez came back from the Dominican and went directly to New York on October 31st, the next day, November 1st and started the game which eventually was the clincher for the Kansas City Royals.
First title since 1985 for the Royals, a small market team that has enjoyed great success during the past few years. Commissioner Fred Manfred presented (for him the first time)the new Major League Champs with the trophy to Mr.David Glass, owner. General Manager Dayton Moore deserves a lot of credit he drafted guys like Hosmer, Moustakas, Gordon, and getting guys like veteran Designated Hitter Kendrys Morales who drove in over 100 runs, solidifying a very strong offensive team, that does not depend only on the home run but score with contact, speed and lots of determination, By mid-season GM Dayton Moore, went and got the #1 starter from Cincinnati Johnny Cueto.
The Royals could have been back-to-back World Series champions, if not for Madison Bumgarner. Their is no better bullpen in baseball that the Royals bullpen.
The Mets made six errors in this World Series, and they all cost them. The Royals walks, steal, then scores with a hit, they play amazing clutch baseball, they have great chemistry and they have tremendous confidence when they fall behind, they have a habit of coming back and winning with that great bullpen. There was a big contrast in this World Series, the solid Kansas City defense, and the flawed Mets defense. Not every year a team that deserves to win a World Series, wins it, but this year it happened.
See you in Spring Training in March 2016!

That’s Amaury’s Podcast, News, & Commentary: Royals crush Mets head to Big Apple up 2-0

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez and Joe Lami

photo credit google images edinson volquez kc royals pitcher

The Kansas City Royals are leaving little doubt about being the dominating team, the Royals  jumped on the New York Mets with early leads and they did so in big hitting fashion with a 7-1 six run game two victory on Wednesday night. The Royals take the two game lead back to New York and the pressure is all on the Mets to get back into the fray but it’ll take a lot of catching up to do.

Game one took 14 innings on Tuesday night in the Royals 5-4 win on an Eric Hosmer sacrifice fly to right that scored Alcides Escobar from third for the winning run in the 14th. The win set the Royals confidence in motion and they rampaged the Mets in game two with the six run win. Royals pitcher Edinson Volquez had a great outing in game one going six innings, six hits, three runs, three strike outs.

Unfortunately for Volquez he found out about his father passing away in the Dominican Republic after game one. Volquez’ father passed while Volquez was pitching game one at age 63 he died of heart failure. Volquez left immediately for the Dominican right after the game  to be with his family.
