San Francisco Giants podcast Stephen Ruderman: How the Devers trade will pay off for San Francisco

Boston Red Sox Roman Anthony (right) Rafael Devers (11) share congratulations after their win against the New York Yankees at Fenway Park on Sun Jun 15, 2025 it was hours later that this would be Devers last game with the Sox and he would be traded to the San Francisco Giants (AP News photo)

San Francisco Giants podcast Stephen Ruderman:

#1 How shocking is for Boston Red Sox fans for three time All Star Rafael Devers to get traded to the San Francisco Giants after the Red Sox were going to build their franchise around Devers?

#2 In exchange for Devers the Red Sox will get left handed pitcher Kyle Harrison and right hand pitcher Jordan Hicks talk about their departures and on the face of it it looks as if the Giants got the better end of this deal.

#3 One of the key factors of the trade was Devers was converted to a designated hitter and was taken off third base and was replaced there by Alex Bregman. Devers had played third base all his career and wanted to continue there but was moved to DH and was not happy about. Sources say that Devers requested for a trade.

#4 Devers was in Sunday’s line up against the New York Yankees playing his last game with the Red Sox. Devers as learned of the trade well after the game and just before the beginning of the Giants-Los Angeles Dodgers game at Dodger Stadium before Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN started.

#5 Stephen, how much does this deal hurt the Red Sox and help the Giants and do the Houston Astros who lost Bregman to the Red Sox get the last laugh?

Giants Lose Series To Dodgers In a Close One 5-4; SF deals Harrison and Hicks to Boston for Devers

San Francisco Giants pitcher Sean Hjelle in the bottom of the first inning delivers to the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium on Sun Jun 15, 2025 (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

The San Francisco Giants (41-31) led 3-2 going into the bottom of the fifth inning eventually losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers (43-29) 5-4.

San Francisco got close but some great work on the mound for the Dodgers decided this game. Dodger closer Tanner Scott dismissed Willy Adames, Heliot Ramos and Jerar Encarnacion striking all three out for the series win.

Game recap: Sunday the Giants started Sean Hjelle and the Dodgers Dustin May was on the mound looking for his fourth win of the season, now with a 3/4 win/loss record and a 4.46 ERA. This will be a fight for first place in the National League West.

The game got underway under sapphire skies with a pleasant mid-70’s temperature. The stadium was packed with families celebrating Father’s Day and hoping for a home win.

The Dodgers had a 2-0 lead going into the top of the fourth inning. They took a first inning lead 1-0 when Andy Pages sacrificed Shohei Ohtani home for the early advantage. Los Angeles would extend their lead in the second inning when Tommy Edman hit a 400 ft home run for a 2-0 tally.

San Francisco would fight back and take the lead in the fourth inning. Their first run was a Christian Koss single driving Mike Yastrzemski home. Jung Hoo Lee tripled in the fourth and both Logan Porter and Christian Koss scored taking a 3-2 lead. Lee has been playing some terrific offensive and defensive baseball and has been a huge part of their recent success .

The Giants loaded the bases in the fifth inning but came away empty but still had a 3-2 lead. It all changed in the bottom of the inning. The Dodgers took back the lead in the fifth inning scoring three runs now ahead by the score of 5-3.

Pages connected for the second time in the game but this hit resulting in a three run homer with Ohtani and Mookie Betts on base. Los Angeles was back in control in this 130 year rivalry with a lot of baseball still left to be played in today’s game.

San Francisco would make this a one-run game in the top of the eighth inning. Daniel Johnson hit a solo home run and the Giants were within striking distance only trailing by a run 4-5. Giant’s pitcher Tyler Rogers had a solid inning dismissing Teoscar Hernandez, Pages and KiKi Hernandez and it was on to the ninth inning.

Tanner Scott would come into the top of the ninth inning to try and save the game for Los Angeles. Willy Adames struck out to start the inning. Ramos followed suit also striking out and San Francisco was down to their last out.

Jerar Encarnacion was the Giants last hope but he struck out for the third out and that was the ballgame. The Dodgers had won the series and taken a two-game lead in the National League West.

It was a disappointment for San Francisco coming so close in this game but they have a lot to look forward to as this season moves on. Their offense has improved over the past few weeks and it will continue on this path going forward.

Game notes: Sunday afternoon the Giants finished up their series with the first place Los Angeles Dodgers . San Francisco won game one Friday 6-2 and the Dodgers answered back in game two Saturday winning the 11-5.

Sunday the two teams played the rubber game to decide the series winner the Dodgers Andy Pages hit a three run home run to help the Dodgers win it.

Behind the scenes the Giants have been hard at work bulking up this lineup and they came up with a huge addition to the team Sunday. The Giants acquired Boston Red Sox All-Star Rafael Devers, probably one of the ten best hitters in the game today.

News of this trade came just hours after Devers helped the Red Sox sweep the New York Yankees. San Francisco traded away pitcher Jordan Hicks and Kyle Harrison among others for Devers services. This was a blockbuster trade for the team.

Devers is only 28 years old with a batting average of .272 and is a three-time All-Star. Now the Giants have an additional weapon, a player with high-level production as they continue to fend off the Dodgers, San Diego Padres and the Arizona Diamondbacks in a hotly contested division.

Devers could possibly jump right into the position of DH or even transition to first base. Now San Francisco can boast more fire power boosting up their recent offensive effort which in all fairness has turned a corner after struggling in May. Instrumental in this trade was ex-Giant Buster Posey now president of baseball operations. This guy knows what he wants and he sure seems to make it happen.

The Giants will now head back to San Francisco for a series with the Cleveland Guardians. The Guardians are a good .500 team as they to on the road west. The Giants will start Robbie Ray who has been terrific coming into this game with a 8-1 win/loss record and a 2.55 ERA. On the mound for the Guardians Slade Cecconi will start with a 1-3 win/loss record and a 4.26 ERA. First pitch for this game is scheduled for Tuesday at 6:45 PM.

Dodgers Even Series Beating Giants In A Blow-Out 11-5

Los Angeles Dodgers designated hitter Shohei Ohtani looks after he hits a home run in the bottom of the sixth inning at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles on Sun Jun 15, 2025 (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

After winning game one in their three game series with the Los Angeles Dodgers (42-29), the San Francisco Giants (41-30) got pounded Saturday in game two 11-5. The Los Angeles Dodgers evened up the series with a great offensive effort ; much improved over Friday night’s game.

Shohei Ohtani had a couple of home runs and the Dodgers scored five runs in the second inning and three in the sixth. The Giants were quiet offensively until the ninth inning when Casey Schmitt hit a grand slam with the bases loaded.

Schmitt had back-to-back grand slams, the one Friday and then in this game. The Dodgers Kiki Hernandez gave up the grand slam along with four hits and three walks.

Game recap: After a poor offensive effort in Friday’s game, the Dodgers got their first run in the first inning. A solo shot from Shohei Ohtani gave Los Angeles the early 1-0 lead.

The Dodgers had an impressive second inning scoring five runs and taking a 6-0 lead. Andy Pages singled Teoscar Hernandez home extending their lead to 2-0.

Michael Conforto doubled Max Muncy home followed by a Mookie Betts double that scored two runs Pages and Conforto. The final Los Angeles run in the second was a Will Smith sacrifice bringing Ohtani home giving the home team a 6-0 lead.

The Dodgers did not take their foot off the pedal scoring again in the third inning. Hyeseong Kim singled to center bringing Max Muncy home for a 7-0 lead. The roles had certainly been reversed in game two with the Dodgers offense coming to life through the first half of the game.

San Francisco helped their rival along the way with seven walks through five innings. The Giants starting pitcher Landon Roupp only pitched 1 2/3 innings allowing for hits, six runs and five walks before being relieved by Spencer Bivens.

He really struggled with no strikeouts. On the other hand the Dodgers Clayton Kershaw was having an easy time with only 58 pitches through five innings.

Home run #25 for Shohei Ohtani came in the bottom of the sixth inning, his second of the game for a 8-0 Los Angeles lead. The Dodgers would follow that up with a two run home run off the bat of Teoscar Hernandez and a 10-0 tally.

Clayton Kershaw was relieved in the eighth inning by Michael Kopech. Kershaw had a great seven innings allowing three hits, no runs, one walk and five strikeouts. He certainly got the job done Friday night.

The Dodgers had their third home run of the game in the eighth inning off the bat of Miguel Rojas. The game went into the top of the ninth inning and San Francisco was down to their last three outs.

With only three hits so far in the game there was little chance for the Giants but it did get interesting when Kiki Hernandez took the mound to close out the game. He loaded the bases. gave up a grand slam, three walks and was positively awful. He was relieved by Anthony Banda who closed out the game. The final was 11-5.

Game notes: The Giants won the first game of their series with the Dodgers Friday night 6-2 via a Casey Schmitt grand slam in the third inning. Although it was early in the game, the Giants held on adding another run in the eighth inning for the win. Friday San Francisco starting pitcher Logan Webb had a great game pitching seven innings. Los Angeles did not have the best game in game one and got even in the series in game two. San Francisco finished up the game with 10 hits while the Dodgers only had two hits on Friday. For Saturday night the Giants clobbered the Dodgers 10-5.

Saturday, the Giants will be looking to win game three and the series. With this win, the Dodgers took back sole possession of first place in the National League West. First pitch for game three is scheduled for 4:00 PM and can be viewed on ESPN. Kyle Harrison will take the mound for San Francisco with a 1-1 win/loss record and a 4.56 ERA. Dustin May will start for the Dodgers with a 3-4 win/loss record and a 4.46 ERA.

Schmitt Grand Slam Spurs Giants Win Over Dodgers 6-2

Top of the third inning the San Francisco Giants Casey Schmitt belts a grand slam home run as Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Will Smith looks on. It was Schmitt’s first career grand slam. The San Francisco Giants (41-29) beat the Los Angeles Dodgers (41-29) in game one of their series 6-2 Friday night. Willy Adames got a solo home run in the first inning for the first lead of the game. In the third inning Casey Schmitt unleashed a 423 foot shot to left center with the bases loaded; the grand slam gave the Giants a 5-1 lead. Andrew Knizner hit his first home run as a Giant, the third home run for the Giants in this game.

The Giants started off the week with a series win over the Colorado Rockies. Friday night, after facing the worst team in baseball, they faced one of the best teams in baseball, the Dodgers fighting with the Giants for first place in the National League West.

The Dodgers had a tough series to start off their week taking on the San Diego Padres. They won game one in extra innings, got crushed in game two 11-1 but won game three winning the series.

This is the first time these two rivals have faced each other this season. The Giants were missing Matt Chapman out with a hand injury and Patrick Bailey with a neck issue both out for a 10-day IL.

The Dodgers have a slew of injuries although their main players will be in action Friday night. San Francisco will have their hands full facing the likes of Shohei Otani, Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, Will Smith, Teoscar Hernandez and Max Muncy.

All of these guys have impressive batting averages but every one of them is capable of hitting the ball out of the park. This series could prove to be a dogfight between these two teams who have had a longstanding rivalry. It’s always a great competitive series when these two teams matchup. The Giants have tied for first place in the division with Friday night’s win. Los Angeles had a different outcome in mind.

Game recap: Willie Adames got the Giants up on scoreboard 1-0 in the first inning with a solo home run to right center as he continues the amazing path he has been on.

The Dodgers threatened in the second inning with two runners on the corners with one out. Los Angeles was 90 feet away from tying up this game. Andy Pages hit a sacrifice fly allowing Will Smith to score from third base and this game was tied 1-1.

With two outs in the top of the third inning, the Giants had the bases loaded with Casey Schmitt at the plate. Schmitt came through hitting a grand slam driving Jung Hoo Lee, Wilmer Flores, and Heliot Ramos home for a 5-1 San Francisco lead. The Dodgers Yamamoto was struggling on the mound with not only the home runs but he already had walked four.

The Giants took the 5-1 lead into the top of the sixth inning. Logan Webb faced the top of the Dodger lineup in the bottom of the inning and had only given up 1 hit through six innings. Webb was having an impressive game.

San Francisco had back to back hits in the seventh inning. Dominic Smith singled followed by a double from Flores and San Francisco had runners on second and third. Schmitt struck out leaving the runners stranded but the Giants kept their lead intact going into the bottom of the seventh inning. The Dodgers Teoscar Hernandez hit a solo home run in the seventh but that would be it for Los Angeles still trailing 5-2.

It was a memorable game for Andrew Knizner hitting his first home run as a Giant in the top of the eight inning extending the Giants lead to 6-2. Tyler Rogers relieved Logan Webb in the bottom of the eighth inning. Webb had a terrific game allowing two hits, two runs, three walks and four strikeouts.

Ryan Walker came in to close out the game for San Francisco. There were two down in the bottom of the ninth inning with Hernandez at the plate, the Dodgers last hope . He struck out and that was the ball game 6-2. The Giants and the Dodgers now have the exact same record deadlocked for first in the National League West.

First pitch for game two of this series is scheduled for 7:10 PM Saturday night. Los Angeles will be looking to even up this series while the Giants would like nothing better than to take a 2-0 lead in the series. Landan Roupp will take the mound for the Giants with a 4-4 win/loss record and a 3.29 ERA. The Dodgers plan on starting the veteran Clayton Kershaw. He has a 1-0 win/loss record and a 4.35 ERA.

Rockies Steal One From Giants Winning In Ninth Inning 8-7; Colorado snaps 5 game skid; SF snaps 7 game win streak

By Barbara Mason

In an unlikely come back, the Colorado Rockies (12-55) won the third game of this series after trailing going into the ninth inning and beating the San Francisco Giants (40-28) 8-7. They scored three runs in the inning and this time it was the Rockies who had come from behind in a Thursday matinee at Coors Field in Denver.

Game recap: Rockies had their chances to beat one of the best teams in baseball today but could not close out either of the first two games in some very disappointing losses. This has been a terrible season for the Rockies and their fans and the empty seats say it all. Their relief pitching was a huge part of these losses.

San Francisco got on the board in the second inning scoring four runs for the early lead. It was the bottom of the Giants lineup that got this game underway. Tyler Fitzgerald sacrificed Mike Yastrzemski home for the opening run.

Logan Porter came to the plate and singled Dominic Smith home. Then along came the big hit, a single from Heliot Ramos, although a single it drove both Jung Hoo Lee and Porter home. When the dust had settled, San Francisco had put together a four run inning and led 4-0.

The Rockies scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning. Ryan Ritter singled to left field allowing both Brenton Doyle and Mickey Moniak to score and the Rockies had cut the Giants lead in half 4-2.

San Francisco pushed their lead back out in the fifth inning in a big way when Dominic Smith knocked his first long ball, a three run home run. Wilmer Flores and Mike Yastrzemski both scored giving San Francisco a 7-2 lead.

The Rockies pulled a bit closer when Mickey Moniak hit a home run in the sixth inning but they still had some work to do trailing 7-3. Colorado fought hard scoring two runs in the seventh inning when Thairo Estrada doubled and Sam Hilliard and Jordan Beck both scored; the Rockies had new life trailing 7-5.

San Francisco did not score in the top of the ninth inning but they still had the 7-5 lead and on the mound Randy Rodriguez was eager to close out this game. It did not go as planned.

It was a wild crazy finish for the Colorado Rockies in the bottom of the ninth inning. Randy Rodriguez walked a couple of runners and the Rockies had the bases loaded. Colorado pulled to within a run 7-6 when Brenton Doyle grounded into a fielder’s choice and Sam Hilliard scored a run plus San Francisco had a fielding error by third baseman Casey Schmitt.

The game had become very uncomfortable for the Giants at this point. With two outs it was not looking good for the Rockies but in a crazy turnaround, Colorado’s Orlando Arcia singled both Thairo Estrada and Ryan McMahon home and that was the ball game 8-7 in favor of the Rockies.

Colorado had avoided the sweep. Despite losing the series they did win the one game and it was heartening to see the joy on the faces of the Rockies as they raced onto the field in jubilation. They have had so little to celebrate this year.

Walks and errors killed the Giants in the ninth inning and reliever Randy Rodriguez did not have his finest game. They did win the series and came away with 11 hits in the game. Starting pitcher Hayden Birdsong pitched six innings allowing six hits, three runs, two walks and six strikeouts. Four relief pitchers worked hard to win this game but just came up short.

Game notes: Wednesday afternoon the Giants finished off their series with the Rockies and failed to get a sweep in game three. San Francisco has had two spectacular come-from-behind wins in game one and two but Thursday were looking to go into the latter innings with a lead instead of trailing. In Wednesday’s game the Rockies scored seven runs in the eighth and ninth innings for the win.

For Colorado starter Antonio Senzatela pitched four innings allowed nine hits, seven earned runs, three walks and two strikeouts. While Senzatela got shelled the offense came back for the win and got him some run support.

Friday a huge series begins for the Giants as they travel back to California for a three game series with the first place Los Angeles Dodgers. Logan Webb will take the mound for the Giants while the Dodgers plan on starting Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Webb has a 5-5 win/loss record and a 2.58 ERA and Yamamoto has a 6-4 win/loss record and a 2.20 ERA. This may come down to a pitcher’s duel in an exciting series that will determine first place in the National League West.

Another Come From Behind Win for San Francisco Beating Rockies In Game Two 10-7

San Francisco Giants Mike Yastrzemski watches his double fly that drove in two runs in the top of the eighth inning against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field in Denver on Wed Jun 11, 2025 (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

This was another come from behind win for the San Francisco Giants (39-28) for a second night in a row. They trailed the Colorado Rockies (12-54) going into the eighth inning by the score of 6-3. They scored four runs in the eighth inning and 2 more in the ninth inning to win the game 10-7 for a 2-0 series lead.

Game recap: The Giants Heliot Ramos got the game started in the right direction for the Giants in the first inning. He hit a home run to center with Jung Hoo Lee on base and San Francisco had a 2-0 lead. Ramos got another run up on the board for the Giants when he sacrificed in the third inning and Lee scored from third base and San Francisco had a 3-0 lead.

The game had started well for San Francisco until the bottom of the third inning when the Rockies took their first lead of the game with four runs. Hunter Goodman doubled Tyler Freeman home followed by a couple of runs scored by Jordan Beck and Goodman on a Giants error at first base and this game was tied. They went on to score the go-ahead run 4-3 on a Hiura single driving Thairo Estrada home.

San Francisco starter Robbie Ray pitched four innings allowing six hits, two earned runs, two walks with five strikeouts. Tristan Beck relieved him in the fifth inning .

Colorado extended their lead in the fifth inning on an Orlando Arcia single driving Brenton Doyle home. Arcia was thrown out stretching for second base but the Rockies had established a 5-3 lead going into the sixth inning.

It was a quiet sixth inning for the Giants but the Rockies came back starting off the inning with a Ryan Ritter triple. Tyler Freeman sacrificed allowing Ritter to score from third base taking a 6-3 lead. Through six innings the Rockies had outhit the Giants nine to six.

After another quiet inning in the seventh the Giants had some catching up to do in the top of the eighth. They had Willy Adames, Heliot Ramos and Wilmer Flores to start the inning. Adames singled, Ramos singled and the Giants had two runners on base with no outs. After Wilmer Flores struck out, PH Dominic Smith singled loading the bases with Casey Schmitt at the plate.

Colorado relief pitcher Tyler Kinley walked Schmitt and the Giants only trailed by two 6-4. Mike Yastrzemski knocked the ball deep a few feet from being a grand slam but scored two runs and this game was tied 6-6 still with only one out.

San Francisco took their first lead since the third inning when Tyler Fitzgerald hit a sacrifice bunt and Schmitt scored from third base for a 7-6 lead. Last night’s relief pitcher Zach Agnos came in to close out the inning for the Rockies.

San Francisco took the 7-6 lead into the top of the ninth inning looking to score some insurance runs. Adames had yet another hit, a double and San Francisco had runners at second and third. Colorado pitcher Zach Agnos walked Ramos and Lee, allowing an Adames double and the bases were loaded with no outs.

Flores sacrificed Lee home and San Francisco had a 8-6 lead. The Giants added another run off a Schmitt single driving Adames home for a 9-6 tally. The hits just kept on coming, adding another run off a Mike Yastrzemski single and San Francisco took a 10-6 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning.

The Rockies had the top of the order in the bottom of the ninth inning after giving up another significant lead. Camilo Doval finished off the Rockies for a final score of 10-7 in favor of San Francisco giving the Giants a 2-0 series lead. Colorado hit a solo home run off the bat of Goodman. They also hit two singles and got the tying run up to the plate but again fell short.

Game notes: Tuesday night the Giants took game one in their series with the Rockies 6-5. This game went into the ninth inning with the Rockies leading 5-2. The Giants had an explosive top of the ninth taking the lead 6-5 scoring four runs.

Colorado closer Zach Agnos had a meltdown walking three runners allowing a solo home run and to top it off a wild pitch that advanced the San Francisco runners. Going into the inning, a Colorado win was looking pretty good but turned into a nightmare.

The Rockies tried to fight back in the bottom of the ninth but only managed two singles and drew a walk. Wednesday night both teams were back at it in what turned out to be another thriller. Colorado has been good but unable to close out and the Giants continue to struggle at the plate with only two hits through 8 innings. They did show up when it counted in the ninth inning and they did close out the game.

On Wednesday night starter Robbie Ray got knocked out of the box going four innings allowing six hits, with two earned runs, two walks, and five strikeouts but the Giants came back and won it. For the Rockies starter Kyle Freeland pitched six innings, allowed six hits and three runs.

First pitch for game three of this series is scheduled for 12:10 PM as the Rockies will be trying to avoid a sweep. Starting pitchers for Thursday afternoon at Coors Field for the Giants RHP Hayden Birdsong (3-1 ERA 2.55) and for the Rockies RHP Antonio Senzatela (1-10 ERA 6.68).

Giants Find A Way to Win In Another One Run Game Beating Rockies 6-5

By Barbara Mason

After trailing 5-2 going into the top of the ninth inning, the San Francisco Giants (39-28) scored four runs to top the Colorado Rockies (12-54) 6-5 in an unlikely win. They got some great at bats from the bottom of the lineup to finish off the Rockies. It was an amazing comeback for the team in another one-run win for the team.

Game recap: San Francisco got on the scoreboard in the first inning leading 1-0. Willy Adames sacrificed Jung Hoo Lee home for the early lead. When it looked as if San Francisco would be able to manage this game, the Rockies tied up the game in the second inning. Ryan Ritter singled Brenton Doyle home for the 1-1 tie in the second inning.

This game got a bit more interesting when Colorado took the lead in the fourth inning 2-1. Ryan McMahon hit a solo home run out of the park and the Rockies were handling the San Francisco pitching.

Adames answered back in the fifth inning with a solo home run to tie this game back up. The Rockies went on to hit their second home run of the game in the same inning and took back the lead 3-2. Kyle Farmer hit a solo home run to left and Colorado was holding their own.

The Giants Kyle Harrison pitched five innings allowing four hits, three runs, two walks and six strikeouts. He was relieved by Spencer Bivens in the sixth inning.

The Rockies took the 3-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning and were six outs away from winning game one of the series. San Francisco got out of the inning leaving the Rockies Tyler Freeman stranded on third base. In their last series, San Francisco won game one in the tenth inning and game two on a walk-off. All three games were one-run wins.

The Giants still had two innings left to either tie or take the lead in this game. They would be looking to the bottom of their lineup to get the job done. San Francisco was unable to do any damage in the top of the eighth inning.

It was the Rockies who did damage in the bottom of the eighth scoring another run and taking a 4-2 lead. Thairo Estrada grounded out and Hunter Goodman scored from third base for their fourth run of the game. Colorado continued to hammer the ball scoring another run now leading 5-2 with two outs on a Brenton Doyle triple that drove McMahon home. The Giants had a huge mountain to climb going into the ninth inning.

San Francisco needed three runs to stay in this game. The Giants Casey Schmitt got right to work to cut the Rockies lead hitting a home run to left center. This was his first home run of the season.

The Giants got a runner on first via a walk and the tying run was at the plate. The Giants Andrew Knizner drew a walk and San Francisco had back-to-back walks and runners on first and second with Jung Hoo Lee at the plate with no outs.

Despite having a two run lead, the Rockies were in trouble. After a wild pitch, Knizner and Lee advanced to second and third base. Colorado closer Zach Agnos was having a meltdown walking a third runner loading the bases with only one out.

Victor Vodnik relieved Agnos looking to save this game for Colorado. The Giants Heliot Ramos sacrificed Knizner home and it was a one-run game with Wilmer Flores looking for the tying hit. Flores hit a little infield dribbler allowing Lee to score and this game was tied. 5-5. San Francisco was not finished. Mike Yastrzemski singled Adames home to take the lead scoring four runs in the ninth inning and now leading 6-5.

Camilo Doval came into the game looking to finish off the Rockies in a wild ninth inning for San Francisco. The Giants held on to win the game as the wheels fell off for Colorado 6-5.

Game notes: After sweeping the struggling Atlanta Braves over the weekend, the Giants took on the Rockies at Coors Field. The Giants only had 16 hits over their last series and only three hits in game three but managed to win the game and got the sweep.

Tuesday night the Giants face another struggling team, in fact the Rockies have the worst record in baseball. The Rockies are 41 games under .500. This is a series that San Francisco should handle easily but they do continue to struggle offensively.

The Giants Matt Chapman was unable to take the field and the team would certainly miss him. He is on a 10-day injured list with right hand inflammation.

San Francisco took care of business in Tuesday’s game winning the first game of the series. First pitch for game two is scheduled for 5:40 PM Wednesday. The Giants Robbie Ray will take the mound for game two. He has been lights out with a 8-1 win/loss record and a 2.44 ERA and will no doubt give the Rockies a whole lot of trouble. The Rockies Kyle Freeland will start for Colorado with a 1-8 win/loss record.

San Francisco Giants podcast Marko Ukalovic: Giants open six game road swing to Colorado and Los Angeles Tuesday

San Francisco Giants Mike Yastrzemski belts a two run RBI double in the bottom of the fourth inning against the Atlanta Braves at Oracle Park in San Francisco on Sun Jun 8, 2025 (AP News photo)

San Francisco Giants podcast with Marko Ukalovic:

#1 Mike Yastrzemski was getting around on the baseball pretty well on Sunday with three RBIs and stretched out his five game hitting streak as the Giants edged the Atlanta Braves on Sunday 4-3 at Oracle Park.

#2 The Giants win gave the Braves their seventh straight loss and the struggling Braves have now lost 14 of their last 17 games and are 27 for 37 and are now ten games below .500.

#3 Yastrzemski was key in the fourth inning for San Francisco with a two RBI double in right field. Yastrzemski scored on an error by the Braves Ozzie Albies who couldn’t handle a hot potato hit by Tyler Fitzgerald hit to second base.

#4 The Giants starter Landen Roupp who pitched six innings allowed five hits and three earned runs, walking two and striking out two which was enough to get the win.

#5 The Giants open a three game series in Denver Tues Jun 10th against the Colorado Rockies in what would look like a cakewalk for the Giants as the Rockies are struggling through a record loss season.

#6 The Giants conclude the road trip to Los Angeles and the Dodgers starting on Thursday night. The Giants are scheduled to play at Dodger Stadium but the National Guard has declared all of downtown Los Angeles an unlawful assembly due to riots in protest of ICE arresting LA citizens and processing them for deportation. Talk about the scenario for the Giants just to play in a volatile neighborhood to get from their hotel to the park and back again?

The Giants pulled off their fourth win in a row in what was a pitcher’s duel, as they were down to their final out, and Matt Chapman hit a walk-off home run to left field to cap off an epic Giants’ 3-2 win over the Braves Saturday.

After Buster Posey shook things up on Wednesday, the Giants have been undefeated. They blew a lead last night, but they were able to win it on a walk-off wild pitch for their seventh walk-off win of the season.

Saturday, on Pride Day, and another gorgeous day for baseball at Oracle Park. San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie was on hand for pregame ceremonies, as were LGBTQ leaders, including State Senator Scott Weiner.

Iowayna Pena, Director of Government Affairs and Real Estate Development for the Giants, and a prominent leader in the LGBTQ Community, threw out the first pitch with the new Pride Ball. What is the Pride Ball you ask? It is a baseball with rainbow stitching. The Seattle Mariners first came up with the idea this year. To my knowledge, it was not used in Saturday’s game, but it would be pretty cool if they start using it for Pride Day next year.

Logan Webb took the ball. Let’s be honest here: Logan Webb is Matt Cain with a sinker. Webb looks like Cain; has the same build as Cain; and has the same mechanics as Cain. Most importantly and unfortunately, Logan Webb suffers the same level of being screwed by his offense as the great Matt Cain.

Saturday would be the same for the Giants’ ace. Webb started off strong, as he retired the first six men he faced. Webb ran into trouble but escaped a jam in the top of the third, and then he threw another 1-2-3 inning in the top of the fourth.

Braves’ starter Bryce Elder started off almost just as strong. He threw a one, two, three inning in the bottom of the first, followed by a pair of scoreless innings in the second and third.

The Giants struck first in the bottom of the fourth, as Wilmer Flores led off the bottom of the fourth with a home run to left field off a hanging slider by Elder. Elder retired the next three, but Braves Manager Brian Snitker decided to get thrown out of the game by Home Plate Umpire Gabe Morales afterwards.

Good chance Snitker got tossed to motivate his struggling team that has not had the kind of season they expected, and who has lost some tough games as of late. It appeared to work, as Michael Harris led off the top of the fifth with a home run to right-center to tie it. Webb retired the next three, and Elder threw a one, two, three inning in the bottom of the fifth.

The Braves then staged a rally off Webb in the top of the sixth, as they loaded the bases with nobody out on three-straight singles. Matt Olson popped up into an infield fly, and then Marcel Ozuna grounded into a fielder’s choice to put the Braves ahead.

Webb struck out Harris to end the top of the sixth and his day, as his pitch count got to him. Webb was just great over six innings, as he struck out ten, and didn’t walk a single guy.

The only problem? You guessed it: Webb couldn’t get any support. Elder one-upped Webb with 12 strikeouts over eight dominant innings. Elder, too, didn’t walk anybody, and on top of that, he only gave up three hits.

That’s why the Giants must have been ecstatic to see former Giant Pierce Johnson in the bottom of the ninth. Well, that, and the fact that it was a wild pitch by Johnson that won the game for the Giants last night.

Pierce Johnson struck out Daniel Johnson to start the bottom of the ninth, and then Heliot Ramos grounded a base-hit to left-center. Wilmer then popped up, and the Giants were down to their last out.

Matt Chapman came up to the plate as the Giants’ last hope on this beautiful afternoon. The count was 1-1 when Johnson threw Chapman a semi-hanging curveball in the bottom half of the zone. Chapman turned on it, and hit a two-run home run to left to win it for the Giants.

It was the eighth walk-off win for the Giants this season, and their second walk-off home run. Believe it or not, the Giants had nine walk-off wins at this point of the season in 2011.

Tyler Rogers, who pitched a scoreless inning in the top of the ninth, got the win, and Pierce Johnson took the loss for the second day in a row.

The Giants improve to 36-27, and they will go for the sweep Sunday with Landen Roupp (3-4, 3.18 ERA) on the hill. Spencer Strider (0-4, 5.68 ERA) will take the ball for Atlanta.

First pitch will be at 1:05 p.m.
