Sacramento Kings forward Marvin Bagley III is thrilled after scoring a three pointer in the first quarter against the Orlando Magic on Wed Dec 8, 2021 at Golden One Center in Sacramento. The Kings play against the Charlotte Hornets tonight in Charlotte (AP News photo)

On the Kings podcast with Jeremiah:

#1 There is little doubt that the Sacramento Kings (11-14) left it all out on the floor on Wednesday night against the Orlando Magic ((5-21) at Golden One Center in Sacramento with a convincing 142-130 win.

#2 Jeremiah, the way you saw Wednesday night’s game did it seem that both coaches Jamahl Mosely for the Magic and Sacramento Kings Alvin Gentry just open up the floor and never the mine the defense and it was about who was going to make it to the finish line?

#3 The Kings had six scorers finish in double figures and De’Aaron Fox finished on top with 33 in a game like that Fox had to be drained at it’s conclusion and he no doubt made every shot count.

#4 The Kings Tyrese Haliburton had a big fourth quarter and finished up with 18 points tied for second in scoring on Wednesday night.

#5 The Kings tip off with the Charlotte Hornets (14-13) tonight at 4pm, the Hornets who got swept in a two game series with the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday 127-124 in OT and Wednesday 110-106 are looking to get back in the win column. Jeremiah how do you see the Kings and Hornets matching up tonight.

SACRAMENTO–The Sacramento Kings were back in action on Wednesday night. The Kings were well-rested, having played two games last week. The last game the Kings played was on Saturday when they took on the Los Angeles Clippers in Sacramento.

The Kings managed to take care of the Clippers by beating them by the final of 104-99. The Kings welcomed in the Orlando Magic on Wednesday night. The Magic didn’t come in a very successful team in 2021 with a record of 5-20. The Kings handled the Magic at home by the final 142-130.

Wednesday game recap: The Kings were set to take on the Orlando Magic on Wednesday at 7 PM PST in Sacramento.

In the first quarter, It wasn’t a spotless start to the game from either team. The Kings and Magic both struggled on the defensive end of the floor. The Kings scored 38 points compared to the Magic with 36 points in the first quarter. The Magic were hitting their three-point shots, which was the biggest reason they were in the game.

However, the Kings were saved on offense by a few three-point makes from Marvin Bagley towards the end of the quarter. Cole Anthony started the offense for the Magic with 8 points as his counterpart De’Aaron Fox had nine for the Kings.

It was more of the same for the Kings in the second quarter. The Kings defense didn’t step it up much in the second quarter. The Kings woes on the defensive end reared their ugly head towards the end of the half.

The Kings had built a bit of a lead as the half was winding down only to see the Magic come back and make it a 70-67 game going into Halftime. Yes, the Kings had the lead, but it wasn’t pretty. The Kings outscored the Magic 32-31 in the second quarter.

The Kings were led by De’Aaron Fox in the first half, who scored 13 points. Cole Anthony led the Magic in the first half with 16 points. The Kings would look to close the game in the second half by tightening up the defensive end of the floor. The Kings entered the game with a seven-point spread against the Magic, according to Vegas.

In the third quarter, the Kings would grow the lead back up. The Kings defense slightly improved from the first half holding the Magic to 25 points in the third, the lowest total of the game so far. On the other hand, the Kings scored 34 points in the third to expand their lead to 104-92, heading into the final 12 minutes.

The Kings managed to hold off the Magic in the fourth quarter and win the game 142-130. The Kings and the Magic played terrible defense in the last quarter, in which the Kings and Magic both scored 38 points.

However, the Kings scored at least 30 points each quarter and held the Magic under 30 points in the third quarter. That was the difference in the game. De’Aaron Fox led the way for the Kings putting up 33 points in 33 minutes of action. Counterpart Cole Anthony led the Magic with 33 points in 35 minutes on the court. The Kings are 5-3 since firing head coach Luke Walton and replacing him with interim coach Alvin Gentry.

Up Next: The Kings head out on the road to take on the Charlotte Hornets on Friday at 4 PM PST.

SACRAMENTO–The Sacramento Kings (10-14) were back in action on Saturday night in Sacramento. The LA Clippers (12-12) were in town to face the Kings at 7 PM PST. The Kings last played on Wednesday when they took on the same LA Clippers at Staples Center in Los Angeles. The Kings beat the Clippers on Wednesday in a well-played game. Would the Kings be able to replicate that performance on Saturday night? Yes! The Kings took down the Clippers 104-99 in Sacramento.

Neither team took a commanding advantage over the other in the first quarter. The Kings scored 29 points, led by a substantial 10 minutes from De’Aaron Fox, who scored 10. The Kings defense had moments of strength in the first quarter, but the Clippers were hitting their three-point shots. The Clippers also scored 29 points thanks to Reggie Jackson and Paul George, who both scored eight.

In the second quarter, the Clippers kept pace with the Kings for most of the quarter. However, the Kings went on a run towards the end of the half. Tyrese Haliburton was hitting threes from around the floor, and the Kings outscored the Clippers 21-16 in the second quarter to take the lead going into halftime at 50-45.

The Kings were led by Tyrese Haliburton in the first half, who scored 15 points. Reggie Jackson led the way for the Clippers with nine points. Could the Kings finish off the Clippers in the second half?

In the third quarter, the Kings and Clippers went back and forth. The Kings went on a run to open the quarter, and the Clippers countered with a run of their own later in the third. However, the Kings managed to hit a few shots in the final seconds to outscore the Clippers 26-25 in the third.

That performance would give the Kings the 76-70 lead heading into the last 12 minutes of the game. Terence Davis was why the Kings were in the lead, shooting 4-5 from three-point range and scoring 13 points in the third quarter. The Kings would look to close out the game and attempt to beat the Clippers for the second time in two games.

In the fourth quarter, both teams made their bids for the victory. In the last minutes, the Kings would expand the lead; then, the Clippers would pull closer again. However, the Kings ultimately showed a lot of toughness and held onto the lead to beat the Clippers 104-99.

The Kings were outscored by the Clippers 29-28 in the game’s final quarter. For the Kings, Terence Davis led the way again. Davis, who has a renewed confidence in his shot, scored 28 points on 9-16 shooting. Tyrese Haliburton added 18 for the Kings in victory.

The Clippers were led by Marcus Morris Sr., who scored 21 points in defeat. It was an excellent win for the Kings, who have a manageable schedule going forward to inch closer to a .500 record. The Kings currently sit at 10-14 on the season.

Up Next: The Kings stay home to take on the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday at 7 PM PST.

Is it the coaching change, is it new plays, is it interim coach Alvin Gentry what’s been the difference?

#2 On Wednesday night it was one of those games where you could see that the Kings were not going to give this one up for example although the Clippers outscored the Kings in the fourth quarter 39-25 the Kings hung on to win it by nine points.

#3 Jeremiah, talk about the offense of De’Aaron Fox who scored 24 points and Terrence Davis who came in second with 23 points on Wednesday night.

#4 What made this game so unique for the Kings was that they played it short handed on the road against the Clippers and won it by nine points.

#5 The Kings next up continue this home at home series which comes to Sacramento on Sat Dec 4th at the Golden One Center. The Clippers who hosted on Wednesday will be visitors on Sat. Kings Beat Clippers Despite Depleted Roster 124-115

Kings Beat Clippers Despite Depleted Roster 124-115

By Barbara Mason

Injury decimated the Sacramento King’s roster as they struggled mid-way through the first quarter in their game against the Los Angeles Clippers (11-11) but took the lead 29-21 and extended that lead at the half 62-52.

The Kings (9-14) are currently in eleventh place in the Western Conference. They have dropped their last two games losing to the Lakers 117-92 and prior to that losing to the Memphis Grizzlies 128-101. The Kings come up with a key win snapping a two game skid 124-115 at Staples Center in Los Angeles against the Clippers.

The Kings have experienced meltdowns in the second half of their last two games. In their last game against the Lakers they had a double digit lead mid-way through the third quarter and just couldn’t sustain it losing by 25 points.

Richaun Holmes and Alvin Gentry apologized to the fans for the miserable play. No excuses were made in the postgame presser. Holmes expressed how he felt hearing fans cheer for the Lakers. “You don’t want to hear nobody get chants on your own home floor,” he said. He wants to work hard to get better because as he said, the fans deserve better.

This season has been chaotic for Sacramento. Individually these players have a lot of talent but they are not playing as a cohesive unit and until they do wins will be few and far between.

Wednesday night they took on the Clippers at Staples Center. The Clippers are currently are in sixth place in the Western Conference. The Kings have a 8-14 record in the same conference. There are a number of badly needed players that were questionable for tonight’s game.

Harkless (knee), Marvin Bagley (illness), Harrison Barnes (foot) and Robert Woodard II (ankle) all determined out to start this game. Things just seem to be getting more and more discouraging for the Kings right now.

The Kings had the lead after the first quarter and really turned it on with three minutes left in the second quarter leading by 20 points. While they could not sustain that lead they were leading at the half 62-52. The Hornets had trimmed the Kings lead from 20 to 10 and in the second half Sacramento struggled in their past few games.

The Kings had a great start in the third quarter extending their lead to 75-57. Sacramento continued to play hard and by the end of the third quarter every single starter had shot in the double digits. The Kings now led 99-76 having won the first three quarters of this game.

With four minutes left in the fourth quarter the Kings held onto a significant lead 119-104. With a 1:30 left in the game the Clippers were making a final bid to win this game making up some ground and trailing 119-111.

The Kings fought through four quarters winning 124-115. De’Aaron Fox finished with 24 points with Terence Davis right behind him with 23 points. The Kings had proven that they could finish and in this game they were missing some of their key personnel.

The Kings will be taking on the Los Angeles Clippers again on Saturday December 4th in Sacramento. Tipoff is at 7:00 PM.

No King? No Kings Either: Promising start devolves into a 117-92 loss against the Lakers without LeBron

By Morris Phillips

SACRAMENTO–Alvin Gentry’s not settling for this.

The Kings’ hard earned double-digit, first half lead over the Lakers evaporated into a 25-point loss and the team’s interim coach was embarrassed.

Gentry’s been around: he was an assistant for the world champion Warriors, he’s led successful, playoff teams in New Orleans and Phoenix, and what he saw Tuesday hurt his eyes.

“They don’t deserve what they got tonight,” Gentry conceded. “As the coach of this team I want to apologize to every Kings’ fan out there.”

Worse than an embarrassed coach, the Kings had their two most recent outings as examples not to follow (loss at Memphis) or keep that blueprint (3OT win at the Lakers) and they couldn’t choose, mixing in each for one half of Tuesday’s roller-coaster.

In the first half, the Kings fought through screens defensively, controlled the glass, then backed it with 56 percent shooting and all the smart ball possession decisions they could muster. The result: a 59-50 lead at the half in which they led by as much as 13. Conversely, the Lakers looked slow, disinterested and leaderless without LeBron James, who was placed on COVID protocols earlier in the day.

But it turned out, the visitors, led by Russell Westbrook, Anthony Davis and wild card Malik Monk were surreptitiously waiting for the Kings to fall flat, and they did just that in a third quarter that was so lopsided it could decide 90 percent of all NBA games.

That was the prelude to a 67-33 wipe out, a second half that enlivened every Lakers fan who walked into Golden 1 Center and left the Kings and their crowd spent.

“A team goes on a run, you punch back and if there is no punch back, you’ll get run out the gym like we did,” Richaun Holmes said.

Holmes was actually the only Sacramento player to lift his fists in the third. The undersized center who returned after missing the three, previous games made all three of his field goal attempts while his teammates were 1 for 15. The Lakers shot 58 percent and with the Kings flailing, they needed just seven minutes to pull even at 72. But their run was just beginning: with the Kings in the midst of a stretch where they missed 17 of 18 shots, the Lakers ended the third on a 15-2 run to lead 87-74.

“We weren’t giving the necessary effort to transition defense and with our pick-and-roll coverages,” Lakers coach Frank Vogel said. “Sometimes you have to let them hear about it.”

Davis had 10 of his team-best 25 in the third, and Russell Westbrook 11 of his 23. Monk came up with the 41-foot, buzzer beater to end the first half, then got nine more in the third, finishing with 22 points.

Holmes led all scorers with 27, missing just one of his attempts from the floor. Chimezie Metu was just as integral with 14 points and 10 rebounds in the absence of the injured, front court trio of Harrison Barnes, Marvin Bagley and Moe Harkless. But all four Sacramento guards had nights to forget.

De’Aaron Fox had 17 points, but his five assists and seven turnovers were telling. Buddy Hield missed six of his seven shots and finished with five points. Rookie Davion Mitchell was a demon defensively in the first 24 minutes, but he missed 11 of his 14 shots and turned it over three times. Tyrese Haliburton missed eight of his 10 shots and finished with six points.

Rookie Louis King, a significant name from the Kings’ summer league push, got his most significant NBA minutes to date by doing a bang up defensive job on Carmelo Anthony. But King too was fallible; he shot 1 for 6 and committed four fouls in 14 minutes on the floor.

The Kings get little time to regroup, they’ll travel to Los Angeles on Wednesday to face the Clippers.

Grizzlies overtake poor-shooting Kings 128-101

A poor shooting night by Sacramento, combined with the one-two scoring punch of Dillon Brooks and Desmond Bane, helped the Grizzlies defeat the Kings 128-101 Sunday in Memphis, snapping a two-game losing streak.

Brooks led the Grizzlies with 21 points, followed by Bane with 18. Jaren Jackson Jr, contributed 17 points and nine rebounds, and Brandon Clarke added 15 points with De’Anthony Melton scoring 14 off the bench.

Buddy Hield was the Kings’ leading scorer with 14 points, despite making 5 of 17 from the field and missing 8 of 9 3-point attempts. Terence Davis was next for Sacramento with 13 points, followed by De’Aaron Fox with 12.

The Kings made 34 percent of their floor shots, including 9 of 42 behind the arc.

The Grizzlies were playing their first game without leading scorer Ja Morant, who was out due to a knee injury suffered Friday against Atlanta. Memphis collectively stepped up, hitting 15 of its 21 shots in the first half as the Grizzlies built a 76-52 halftime lead.

Sacramento trailed 106-74 after three quarters. The Kings were without forwards Harrison Barnes, Maurice Harkness and Richaun Holmes – all were held out of the lineup due to various ailments.

The Kings are 2-2 under interim coach Alvin Gentry, who took over after Luke Walton was fired last week. They return home to host the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night.

Never give up Kings get triple overtime victory over Lakers 141-137

The Sacramento Kings were back in action on Friday night after beating the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday night. The Kings won for the first time on Wednesday day after the firing of Luke Walton on Sunday. The Kings were in Los Angeles on Friday to take on the Lakers. The Kings would manage to beat the Lakers 141-137 in triple overtime at Staples Center.

In the first quarter, both teams were evenly matched. Unfortunately, it wasn’t very impressive. The Kings and Lakers both managed to score 20 points in the first quarter in what what a solid defensive but lackluster quarter for both teams on offense. The Kings would look to pickup the offensive effort to build a lead on the Lakers.

In the second quarter, it was a similar story for both teams. The second quarter saw the Kings and Lakers both score the same number of points again with both teams putting up 23 points. The Kings and Lakers would be tied heading into the second half at 43 points each. Leading the way for the Kings in the first half was De’Aaron Fox as Russell Westbrook led the charge for the Lakers in scoring.

In the third quarter, the Lakers would take the first end of quarter lead of the game. The Lakers managed to outscore the Kings 35-30 as both offenses came to life. The Kings struggles to contain the Lakers offense as both teams seemed to take a step back on defense.

In the fourth quarter, the Kings would mount a comeback. The Kings out scored the Lakers 27-22 in the final quarter of regulation to head into overtime with a score of 100-100. In overtime, the Kings would look to win back to back games for the first time in a while this season.

In the first and second overtimes both teams wouldn’t be able to gain an inch. The teams both scored 12 points in the first overtime and the same in the second. The game would be tied 124-124 heading into the final overtime.

In the third overtime, the Kings out scored the Lakers 17-13 and pull out the win 141-137 in the Kings win. It was the first triple overtime game for the Kings since 2009 against the Golden State Warriors. It was a great emotional win for the Kings who saw De’Aaron Fox lead the way with 34 points. Lebron James led the way for the Lakers in defeat scoring 30 points.

The Kings will look to replicate their success against the Lakers when they come to town on Tuesday.

Up Next: The Kings head to Memphis to take on the Grizzlies on Sunday at 3 PM PST.

SACRAMENTO—Desperate for a win, the Sacramento Kings bench players rose up to the challenge.

Marvin Bagley III hit a three pointer with 30.5 second left in the game to ice a 125-121 victory over the Portland Trailblazers on Thanksgiving Eve at the Golden 1 Center.

Sacramento snapped its four-game losing streak and won its first game under interim coach Alvin Gentry since he took over the head coaching duties this past Sunday after the dismissal of Luke Walton on Sunday. Portland had its four-game winning streak snapped.

Buddy Hield led all Kings in scoring with 22 points on 6 of 15 shooting, including 5 of 11 from beyond the arc, off the bench. Davion Mitchell had a big fourth quarter scoring 12 of his 16 points in the winning effort.

Bagley III scored a season high 10 points off the bench as the Kings bench were responsible for 61 of the 125 points.

“I was happy for Marvin (Bagley III) and thought he played a really great game,” Gentry said.

Sacramento (7-12) got off to the fast start that has plagued them for the past month. A balanced scoring attack from the starting five had the Kings jumped out to a 20-12 lead, which included a 10-0 run in a three-minute period.

Jusuf Nurkic dominated the opening quarter for Portland (10-9) as he scored 14 points on 7 of 9 from the floor. Portland had two runs, a 12-4 and a 10-6 to end the quarter with a 36-32 lead.

Damian Lillard scored 12 of his 17 first half points in the second quarter including a 30-foot three pointer to power the Blazers offense in the second quarter.

De’Aaron Fox led Sacramento with 10 points of 17 first half points in the second quarter on four of five shooting.

Blazers power forward Robert Covington was ejected from the game with 49 seconds left in the game for throwing his goggles at an official.

The two teams put on an offensive showcase as they combined for 72 points in the second quarter as Portland had 71-69 lead at halftime.

The third quarter was the exact opposite of the second quarter with sloppy play and horrible shooting from both teams in the first nine minutes of the quarter. The Kings didn’t register its first point of the third quarter until 9:25 left when Harrison Barnes hit one of two free throws.

The Kings outscored the Blazers 24-21 in the quarter to take a 93-92 lead into the fourth quarter.

“We gotta have fun out there,” said Kings point guard Tyrese Haliburton. “We gotta get the crowd involved. I think that was big for us tonight.”

Lillard led the Blazers in scoring with 32 points on 7 of 18 shooting (but just 3 of 12 from beyond the arc) and 15 of 16 from the free throw line. Nurkic finished with a double-double, 28 points and 17 rebounds. Normal Powell had a strong game with 22 points on 50% shooting from the floor. Nassir Little chipped in with 16 points off the bench.

Fox, who was also ejected from the game for arguing with the refs, led the Kings’ starters with 21 points on eight of 13 shooting from the field, including four for four from the free throw line.

GAME NOTES: Sacramento finished 12-for-33 from beyond the arc. Portland was 12-for-33.

Barnes, who left the game with an injury, had X-rays taken after the game and were negative. “Our doctors are pretty optimistic that everything’s going to be fine,” said Gentry.

UP NEXT: Sacramento travel out to Los Angeles to take on the Lakers on Friday 11/26 at 7:30pm at Staples Center.
