Kings hold off the Clippers in the Preseason Finale
By Charlie O. Mallonee
The Sacramento Kings closed out the preseason with a 110-100 win over the LA Clippers Friday night in LA. The game was not the most picturesque affair, but it had its moments.
The Clippers came out of the box ready to play. They outscored the Kings 30-20 in the first period.
The Kings came roaring back in the second quarter scoring 37 points to the Clippers 21. Isaiah Thomas led the charge scoring 18-points in just 15 minutes of play.
Sacramento continued to stay hot in the third period outscoring LAC 32-20.
The Clippers made a real run at a comeback in the fourth quarter. They the used the 3-Pointer and Free Throw opportunities in an attempt to cut the Kings commanding 19-point lead down to a manageable size. The Clips topped the Kings 29-21 in the final period but ultimately fell short.

Kings arena: anti arena group to ally with non-union contractors
by Ken Gimblin
SACRAMENTO–The new ownership of the Sacramento Kings might have to dig in at the ballot box politically this coming June as a anti arena group has geared up to oppose the new arena proposal. The new group Voters for a Fair Arena Deal will not be working with Sacramento Taxpayers Opposed To Pork or STOP. Non-union contractors who appeared at one of the Kings rallies at the Westfield mall the site of the proposed new Kings arena are joining the protest against the new arena and plan to support VFAD.
The non-union contractors are upset that they were not included in any process of the new arena build, the new arena is expected to be built by only union labor.VFAD is separating itself from the better known group STOP due to questionable petition gathering by STOP and how signatures were gathered by STOP were in question. Also STOP’s involvement with Seattle hedge fund manager Chris Hansen who paid $50,000 to have signatures gathered by STOP. Hansen who lost his bid to move the Kings to Seattle might have been seeking a way to stop the Kings from building a new arena in Sacramento if it were put to a vote regarding public funding.
Hansen later said he had nothing to do with paying the $50,000 for the signature gathering after receiving heavy criticism by city and NBA officials behind closed doors sources say to put a ballot measure to have any new public funding for any new sports facilities built in Sacramento to be voter approved first.
The public’s share of subsidizing the new Kings arena downtown is around $258 million. Hansen later backtracked after realizing he might have damaged his chances to buy, build a new arena, and own an NBA team in Seattle. VFAD is going forward with the petition campaign saying they want the public funds policed for new sports facilities which should be voted on by the Sacramento voters.
The non-union contractors who will not be involved in any of the construction work are willing to contribute to the ballot measure effort by donating $15,000-$25,000. VFAD will not be joining STOP to work in concert with getting the measure on the ballot distancing themselves from STOP because of what is considered questionable campaigning in obtaining the petition signatures and their involvement with Hansen.
Community activist Craig Powell from the group Eye on Sacramento said, “we are not opposed to the new arena, we are not opposed to the public subsidy for an arena. What we are in favor for is a subsidy we can afford.” Craig has said that the price tag of $258 million in public subsidies is too much and will do damage to the city budget.

Kings lose to Warriors in preseason game
By George Devine, Sr.
A basketball-hungry crowd ended its offseason famine by coming in large numbers to Oracle Arena in Oakland to see the Sacramento Kings in preseason against the Golden State Warriors. The home team won, 94-81, but the Kings showed promise for the coming season.
Sacramento was off to a quick start, and led 26-21 after the first quarter, even with a 13-3 run for Golden State in that period. But when it came down to endurance late in the game, the Warriors lunged ahead and stayed there.
Klay Thompson had 17 points and four boards. He was 8 for 17 from the floor. He is a veteran of last year’s team that won 47 games and went to the playoffs, along with Harrison Barnes, Steph Curry, David Lee and Andrew Bogut. That was tough competition for the Kings and made for an exciting game.
For the visitors Isaiah Thomas had 15 points and six boards. DeMarcus Cousins had nine and four, respectively; it has just been announced that he has signed a lucrative multi-year extension with the team.
For Sacramento fans, it was enough to see their team stay, after a pitched battle– reported by Sports Radio Service’s Ken Gimblin — that prevented the team from moving to Seattle. The new organization has two Warrior standbys in place: former assistant coach Mike Malone heads up the Kings, with his dad as an assistant, and Warrior legend Chris Mullin is a consultant. As the season progresses, the fans will expect more and the talent indicates they will see more.
The Kings next play the Lakers at Los Angeles on Thursday, October 10 at 7:00 p.m. PDT.
Kings Sign Cousins to Long-term Deal
By Charlie O. Mallonee
The Sacramento Kings have made a major investment in their future by signing center DeMarcus Cousins to a reported four-year $62-million contract extension. The exact contract figures were not released per Kings policy.
The very talented Cousins has at times shown that he can be a dominate force who can take control of game and lead a team to victory. He has also shown that he can be inconsistent and moody at times. The Kings are betting on the fact that with maturity Cousins’ strengths will become the dominate factor in his play.
No one can deny that Cousins is an impressive player with the potential to become an All-Star caliber player. The 6-11 center has averaged 16.3 points (.448 FG%, .704 FT%), 9.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.3 steals and 29.8 minutes per game in 220 games over his three seasons with the Kings. Cousins has missed just two games due to injury over that time period.
The Kings management is happy to have Cousins signed, sealed and delivered for the long-term. This contract makes the statement that management believes Cousins is a major building block to the team’s future success on the floor.
“DeMarcus is a unique talent with skills rarely witnessed at the center position,” said D’Alessandro. “His combination of size, quickness and athleticism lends an invaluable dimension to our team now and in seasons to come. We look forward to watching DeMarcus continue his development into one of the best players in the game.”
“I am excited to continue to be a part of the Kings under the leadership of Vivek Ranadivé and the Sacramento ownership group,” said Cousins. “I’m also thankful to work alongside Pete D’Alessandro and Coach Michael Malone. I’m anxious to get back on the court with my teammates and can’t wait to play in front of the best fans in professional sports. I plan on showing them my appreciation this season and beyond.”
With Cousins in the fold, the Kings can now concentrate on evaluating the talent at training camp in order fill the 2013-14 roster. The Kings first preseason game is Monday, October 7th at Golden State.
Kings arena will be see through and will have 5% surcharge on tix
SACRAMENTO–With new part owner Shaquille O’Neal sitting at the dais at the Sacramento Kings media day was the big hit on the stage after buying into the Kings partnership. Kings majority owner Vivek Ranadive withheld information about the new design on the Kings new downtown arena. Ranadive wouldn’t discuss certain details of the new arena design that will run in the neighborhood of $448 million.
Sources have said that fans not able to get into the arena will be able to see the game from the outside of the arena from a see through glass located even or above the floor level. Ranadive refused to release that information but it was learned that the Kings will be using public resources in the neighborhood of $62 million that was recently approved the Sacramento City Council for costs of the arena.
The funds from the city will be paid off by charging a five percent sales tax on each ticket sold at the Kings new arena which is expected to be open in 2016. O’Neal and Ranadive joked at the presser and O’Neal said that he intends to make the Kings a global brand name. The Kings recently were voted the worse sports organization overall in a poll that included Major League Baseball, the NFL, the NHL and the NBA which would account for former Kings owners the Maloof family who helped make that distinction.
Ranadive said that he wants to give the Kings a new make over and new brand name. In Ranadive’s native country India and throughout Asia where basketball is the number one sport in many Asian countries marketing there will be huge on the Kings part. O’Neal is very excited about marketing to these countries and part of the plan a source said was to televise live Kings games in different countries with coverage in different languages and promote the sales of jersey, caps, and other Kings souvenirs.
“There’s a billion people in India, there’s going to be a lot of people watching. We want it to be the biggest opening night in the history of the NBA.” O’Neal said that the Kings new arena would put the Kings on the map saying it would be a “first cash less arena where fans would be able to use I phones to buy their tickets, find the concession stands and even the bathrooms with the smallest lines, as long as you got a phone you can get in” said the former Lakers star.
Ranadive said that the arena would be the first outdoor and indoor facility but would not allude to the windows outside the building where fans can see the game in an new arena where every seat will be sold out for every game. Ranadive did mention that fans would be able to watch the game live on big screen TVs outside the arena just like watching a game in a drive in. The Kings are expected to provide cover for rainy nights for those events when screening a game outside for fans. NBA Commissioner David Stern said he was excited about the new ideas for the new arena.
In the meantime the group STOP Sacramento Taxpayers Opposed to Pork are now close to having 22,000 signatures for a ballot measure allowing the voters to tell Sacramento that they will need voter approval on any new sports facility being built in Sacramento. Seattle hedge fund manager Chris Hansen who wanted to buy and move the Kings to Seattle and was voted down by the NBA Board of Governors who voted in favor of Sacramento funded the ballot measure signature campaign in which he now denies he’s a part of although he recently paid a $50,000 fine for missing the voter registration deadline.
Hansen funded some $80,000 for the signature campaign and later apologized and said he had no part in the campaign drive. Hansen also demanded that STOP or the signature gatherers give him back the signatures but the groups have said that the signatures are legitimate and they will be submitted to the voters office in Sacramento for the June 2013 election once they receive the full 22,000 signatures plus.
