That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: NBA All-Star game maybe was an exhibtion but the fans love the game

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary

Unlike Major League Baseball which the All-Star game in the last seven years means something if the American League or the National League wins the game, the winning league gets to host the World Series. It’s always great to open the World Series at home which is an advantage. MLB is very smart for doing that format because it means something. In the NBA which just completed their All-Star game last Sunday it doesn’t mean anything.

A high scoring game is what the fans want and everybody likes defense too, the average fan about 90 percent maybe more loves the 20 footers, the blocks by LeBron and they got what they wanted a big scoring game which was won by the East 163-155. In the NBA this was only an exhibition and it was good for the game.

The Warriors Stephen Curry had a double double in the game and Curry is a solid star and one of the best players in the league. If Curry was playing in New York, Los Angeles, or Chicago he would get more publicity. We all know who he is in the Bay Area but he’s not well known across the country. When people across the country are asked whose among the ten best players in the NBA his name doesn’t come up but that doesn’t mean he’s not one of the top ten players.

Although people don’t mention his name Curry is a great player and everyone in the Bay Area knows he plays for Golden State and it was good to see him getting the double double and nothing he does surprises me. He’s a terrific player espeically when he’s on which is all the time.

New arena for Warriors update: We in the Bay Area know that building a sports arena whether it’s for basketball or baseball in San Francisco is not an easy task. Look what happened to the 49ers they left San Francisco for little known Santa Clara. The Giants for example took many years to get approval to build Pacific Bell Park and they built it with private money.

The Warriors are in for a rude awakening in trying to get the arena built at piers 30-32 at the waterfront. Warrior owners Joe Lacob and Peter Gruber are realizing it’s not like in Los Angeles when you can build a new arena in downtown and you can find a space and make it happen.

For example the baseball Los Angeles Angels are not too happy with the city of Anaheim. Angels owner Artie Moreno doesn’t have an agreement with the city and their are strong rumors that the Angels might move to downtown L.A. The Angels would like to build the new stadium where the Staples Center is down there by Figueroa Street that would be a nightmare for traffic. The NFL also likes the Staples Center site in L.A.

I mention L.A. because I work half the summer in the Southland and it’s the largest area in California there’s room where you can build but in San Francisco it is almost like sacred land. Anybody who’s in real estate knows that anything in the city is very expensive. The environmentalists and many groups oppose the Warriors buidling an arena at the Embarcadero waterfront. Its a very, very, difficult area to build a new arena because of all the red tape and hoops they would have to jump through.

Kings shock Knicks in OT, 106-101

By George Devine, Sr.

The Kings were without a win on their current road trip, and seemed destined for one more loss before coming home to Sacramento. When DeMarcus Cousins limped off the court late in the game, there was little hope against the Knicks in their home court at Madison Square Garden. But a Sacramento rally in the fourth quarter brought the game to a tie and a surge in the extra period had the visitors winning, 106-101.

Rudy Gay was back in form, after being out a couple of games with the flu and playing below his typical 20-point level in the next two. He came in right at that number, but more to the point contributed a pair of key steals, 2 field goals from beyond the 3-point line (out of 6 attempts) and 7 rebounds, 4 of them on defense. He tied the score at the end of regulation — helping his team overcome a 13-point disadvantage — and his go-ahead trey in OT put the Kings ahead for good.

Cousins scored 19 points before departing the game, after playing 32:49. He had 14 rebounds, all but three of them defensive. Isaiah Thomas had 20 points and 7 assists. But the star of the evening, besides Gay, was Jimmie Fredette, who had his best night yet in the NBA with 24 points, and 2 crucial steals.

For New York, Carmelo Anthony scored 36 points and Tyson Chandler added 17. Each had 11 boards. Raymond Felton contributed 8 points and a dozen assists. Amare Stoudemire had 20 points and 2 blocks. Anthony missed what could have been a winning basket at the end of regulation, and the Kings’ defense shut him down in the extra period.

In their next game the Kings host the Golden State Warriors at Sleep Train Arena on Wednesday, February 19 at 7:00 p.m. PST.

Kings mauled by Cavs, 109-99

By George Devine, Sr.

In tonight’s game at Cleveland, the Cavaliers beat the Kings 109-99 and Anthony Bennett showed why he was a top draft pick, scoring 19 points and contributing 10 rebounds. 7 of them defensive. The win for the Cavs has them in a good frame of mind approaching the All-Star break and has the opposite effect for the Kings who have had a tough road trip, losing 7 in a row away from Sleep Train Arena.

Rudy Gay, who had been the star for Sacramento in most of his recent games, scored only 14 points although he did have 9 boards, 7 on defense. The high scorer for the visitors was DeMarcus Cousins, with 21 points; he had 10 rebounds, 6 of them defensive. Isaiah Thomas scored 16 points and contributed 8 assists. However, 6 of Cousins’ rebounds and 11 of his points were in the first quarter, and then he was quiescent until halftime. At the other end of the evening, a 7-point run for the Cavaliers — sparked by Kyrie Irving beyond the trey line — made a crucial difference despite the Kings leading the scoring in that final frame but in no other.

The field goal percentages were roughly comparable with 47.7% for Cleveland and 45.9% for Sacramento.

For Cleveland, Luol Deng led the scoring with 22, and contributed 4 assists; Dion Waiters scored 20 points and had 8 assists. Bennett had 19 with 10 rebounds, 7 of them on D. Irving had 13 points and 6 assists and Tristan Thompson poured in 16 points, making 13 rebounds, 7 of them defensive.

The Kings next play at New York in Madison Square Garden on Wednesday, February 12 at 4:30 p.m. PST.

Kings fall to Wizards, 93-84

By George Devine, Sr.

In another game where neither team scored in triple digits, the Kings went down on the road. This time Rudy Gay joined in the action for 32:17 but only scored 5 points. He is recovering from the flu, which sidelined him in Friday’s loss at Boston, 99-89. This time it appeared he would be well enough to make a major contribution, but in fact he only achieved approximately 25% of his typical production. The Kings are 0-4 with Gay absent, not only due to the recent flu but previously on account of an ankle injury.

The other key to the game was the defense of Washington, led by Nene, who had not only 3 blocks but 18 points. This meant that Sacramento came up 9 points short despite an above-par 86% from the free throw line (down a tad from Friday’s 91.7%) and an advantage in rebounds, 49 to the Wizards’ 38. But on field goals the Kings trailed, 43%-35% and especially on three-pointers where the margin was a staggering 38%-18%. The long ball plus the “D” made enough difference to get Washington back to the .500 mark against the visitors, whose win-loss percentage is approaching the batting average of a successful MLB player.

Isaiah Thomas led the Kings with 30 points and had 8 assists. DeMarcus Cousins had 14 points, with 12 boards and 2 blocks. For the Wizards, 16 points were scored by Bradley Beal, including a pair of treys in the last six minutes of the game. Marcin Gortat scored 17 points and had 8 rebounds.

The Kings outscored the Wizards in the final period, 20-18 and in the third, 19-18, but their slim advantage after halftime was insufficient given the home team’s lead in each of the first two quarters.

The next game for the Kings is on Tuesday, February 11 vs. Cleveland at Quicken Loans Arena. Tipoff is at 4:00 p.m. PST.

Kings downtown arena: Old Sac biz leaders want Kings to switch game time to avoid messy traffic

SACRAMENTO-Business leaders in Old Sacramento have asked the Sacramento Kings to switch their tip offs to 7:30 PM instead of the usual 7:00 PM starting time. Business leaders say that dinner time is usually around 7pm and if the Kings tip is at 7pm too traffic would be a snarl going to Old Town, “Old Sacramento has very real existing transportation, parking, connectivitey issues, which the construction and operation of the arena will amplify” wrote Howard Skalet of Skalet Family Jewlers and Chris McSwain group executive director of 120 businesses that are involved with Old Sac.

McSwain and Skalet said a recent environmental report doesn’t include the issue of traffic tie ups at the 7PM hour and that the report being released without that information is misleading, “the (report) incorrectly and unfairly shifts the responsibility for negative impacts to Old Sacramento from nearly a half billion dollar construction project to small family owned businesses” concluded the report.

The Old Sac group is asking for 300 additional parking spaces to help allieviate the traffic near Old Town when the 7PM tip gets underway, the group also stated that they would be pleased when the Kings have their arena at the Mall location but Old Town is asking for some help in getting diners into Old Sac without fighting for parking and traffic access.

McSwain said the underpass that connects Old Sac to the Westfield Mall is not safe and the Old Sac group may ask for a safer passage way between the arena and Old Sacramento. Fans, diners, and tourists alike are being encouraged to walk to Old Sacramento and the new arena once everything is set up.

City Councilman McCarty says Kings investment group owners wanted more than claimed for arena deal: Sacramento Councilman Kevin McCarty made claim that in early 2013 the Sacramento Kings investment group had approached asking if the city would put up more than the $258 million public funds subsidy that the city was offering.

At the time those of the group were identified by McCarty as, Sacramento develper David Taylor, lobbyist and businessman David Anderson and Frank Quintero, and Southern California Billionaire Ron Burkle who had to later step down from the group because of conflict of interest issues.

The trio of Anderson, Quintero, and Burkle wanted more the from public subsidies than the $258 million figure at that time. Recently testifying at a closed door deposition for a lawsuit filed against the use of subsidies for the new Kings arena McCarty testified as read in the 133 page deposition that there were subsidies on the term sheet that were not accounted for, “I view that the city provided a normal of subsidies that weren’t properly accounted for monetarily in the term sheet.”

McCarty testified that the group wanted to inflate the $258 million another $125 million additional which the current Kings owners under managing partner Vivek Ranadive are reportedly asking for more in public subsidies, “so called whales lobbied me and other council members asking the city if they would contribute more than last year’s $258 million subsidy and using the number $125 million more because they were overpaying.”

Kings, minus Gay, lose to Celtics, 99-89

By George Devine, Sr.

With Rudy Gay on the inactive list again, the Kings went to Boston and put up a good fight, but could not last against the Celtics, and lost 99-89. It is particularly disappointing given the relatively even records of the two teams, with the Kings at 17-32 and the Celtics at 17-33 coming into the game.

The ability of Gay to score an average of just over 20 points a game has been a key factor since his joining the Kings this year, and he was certainly missed although his teammates mounted a heroic effort to make up for his absence.

Sacramento actually led at the end of the first period, 29-21, and had a lead early in the third after a 6-0 run in the first two minutes of that quarter, but the home team dominated throughout. Boston was 45.5% from the field, with 40.9% on treys. Sacramento was only 38.6% on field goals, considered a poor percentage on the collegiate level, and 33.3% on the long shots. However, the Kings more than exceeded NBA expectations from the line, shooting 91.7% to Boston’s 66.7%. The inconsistency between field goals and free throws is indicative of a poor shooting effort even with superlative performance on the charity stripe.

DeMarcus Cousins led the visitors’ scoring with 31 points and contributed 16 rebounds, 13 of them on defense. Isaiah Thomas scored 24 points and had 6 assists. Derrick Williams played almost the whole game, 42 minutes and 19 seconds. He had 11 points and his main value was 12 boards, 8 of them on defense.

For the Celtics, Jared Sullinger led with 31 points and 16 rebounds, a dozen of them on defense. Jeff Green poured in 17 points and Jerryd Bayless had 19.

The Kings next play Washington at Verizon Center in the nation’s capital, at 3:00 p.m. PST on Sunday, February 9.

The Sacramento Kings will have a representative at the 2014 NBA All-Star Weekend in New Orleans. Rookie guard Ben McLemore has been selected to participate in the Sprite Slam Dunk contest. The last Kings’ player to take part in the Slam Dunk contest was Gerald Wallace in 2002.

McLemore will join Toronto guard and defending champion Terrence Ross, Indiana forward Paul George, Portland guard Damian Lillard, Washington guard John Wall and Golden State forward Harrison Barnes in the contest. The high profile event will give McLemore exposure to a national audience of NBA fans.

McLemore, a 6-5 guard out of Kansas, has averaged 7.7 points in 23.5 minutes per game for the Kings. The rookie shooting guard has had moments of brillance and has had his struggles as you would expect from a first year player in “the Association”. McLemore has been very impressive when he drives the lane and attacks the basket.

The Slam Dunk contest will be a part of the All-Star Saturday Night. The event will be televised nationally on the TNT.

Kings beat Toronto, 109-101

By George Devine, Sr.

The Kings are thriving on home cooking at Sleep Train Arena, having beaten Chicago 99-70 and now Toronto, 109-101.

A key factor was that Rudy Gay and DeMarcus Cousins were both on the court again Cousins accounted for 25 points and 10 rebounds. Gay had 24 points and also 10 rebounds. Jason Thompson was another to achieve 10 boards, and scored 9 points. Isaiah Thomas had 23 points and 5 assists.

For the visitors, Kyle Lowry had 21 points, 8 assists and 7 rebounds. Patrick Patterson had 14 points, and Jonas Valancianas had 12 points with 11 rebounds.

Sacramento led by a substantial margin in all quarters but the fourth, by which time it was too late for Toronto to overcome the lead.

Kings cripple Bulls, 99-70

By George Devine, Sr.

The fans at Sacramento didn’t mind the home team scoring below 100 points, as long as they won, which they did handily, defeating the visiting Chicago Bulls, 99-70. DeMarcus Cousins was the leader in points with 25 and rebounds with 16, coming back with a vengeance after missing six games due to an ankle injury. All but two of Cousins’ boards were on defense.

Isaiah Thomas scored 19 for the Kings, and Rudy Gay — who has been scoring an average of 20 points — accounted for only 14 but had 6 rebounds, 5 of them on defense. Coming off the bench, Jimmer Fredette scored 11.

For the Bulls, Jimmy Butler had 17 points and 5 rebounds. Tony Snell and Taj Gibson each had 11 points.

The Kings will host Toronto at 7 p.m. PST on Wednesday, February 5.

Kings fall in San Antonio 95-93

Rudy Gay missed a baseline jump shot with seconds left to play in the game and the Kings lost to the Spurs 95-93 on Saturday night in San Antonio.

Both teams came into the contest looking to stop losing streaks that had been caused by injuries to key players. The Spurs had lost three in a row while the Kings were 0-6 since DeMarcus Cousins went down with a sprained ankle.

The Kings had played well enough to win in four of those six games, but lack of defense came back to haunt Sacramento as potential wins turned into losses. On Saturday night, the defense showed up but the offense came up lacking for the Kings.

The Kings held the Spurs to just 52 points in the first half. Then, Sacramento allowed San Antonio to score just 19 points in the third quarter and only 24 points in the final quarter. The Kings allowed only 95 points to a team that averages 104 points per game.

The big problem for the Kings was the Spurs defense. San Antonio allowed the Kings to score just 93 points which is minus 8.9 points below their season average of 101.9 per game. The Kings were able to score just 15 points in the fourth quarter.

The most glaring stat of the game can be found in bench points. The Kings bench managed to score just 25 points while the Spurs’ reserves poured in 48 points coming off the bench.

Isaiah Thomas led all scorers in the game with 26 points and five assists. Rudy Gay posted 23 points, seven rebounds and six assists for the game. Gay and Thomas both had outstanding games.

The Spurs were led by Tim Duncan with 23 points, 17 rebounds and five assists. Tony Parker returned to the San Antonio lineup and hit for 18 points and 10 assists. Second unit players Patty Mills scored 15 points while Boris Diaw added 14.

The loss dropped the Kings record to 15 wins and 32 losses. San Antonio improved to 34-13 on the season.

DeMarcus Cousins did dress for the game but did not play. The Kings are 0-7 without Cousins in the lineup.

The Kings flew home after the game and will begin a short two game home-stand. The Chicago Bulls will come to call on the Kings on Monday night followed by the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday.
