Different quarterback, same result for the Raiders

By Jeremy Kahn

OAKLAND-After numerous tests for a concussion that he suffered in Monday’s 37-21 loss to the Denver Broncos, it was decided that Terrelle Pryor was unable to go and Matt Flynn was getting the start.

Everything was looking good for the Oakland Raiders, especially after jumping out to a 14-0 lead over the winless Washington Redskins.

Unfortunately, jumping forgot to tell the Redskins that were just supposed to roll over for the Raiders and fall to 0-4; however head coach Mike Shanahan, his staff and especially players left the Coliseum with a 24-14 over the Raiders.

David Amerson returned an interception for a touchdown, and the Redskins defense sacked Flynn seven times on the afternoon.

“We needed that so bad,” defensive end Ryan Kerrigan said. ”It really feels good. Seven was kind of the magic number today – we give up only seven points, we have seven sacks, scored seven points on defense. Great feeling right now.”

The Raiders first touchdown of the game came after a blocked Sav Rocca punt was recovered in the end zone by Jeremy Stewart, and then the Raiders extended the lead up to 14-0, when Flynn threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to rookie Mychel Rivera.

Besides not having Pryor, the Raiders lost the services of running backs Darren McFadden and Marcel Reece before the end of the first half.

Robert Griffin III gave the Redskins the lead for good on a touchdown pass to Pierre Garcon, and then Roy Helu, Jr., clinched the victory with a touchdown run midway thru the fourth quarter.

”That one hurt, that one stung,” coach Dennis Allen said. ”I felt the way we were able to start out the game . get to 14-0 . then we let them back in the game. Give them credit, they continued to fight. But we didn’t do enough to win the football game.

Pryor looks very likely to start against Washington on Sunday

by David Zizmor

OAKLAND–In what look doubtful for Raiders starting quarterback Terrelle Pryor to return back in uniform and see any action Pryor was cleared by the NFL and passed league mandated tests and is expected to start on Sunday against Washington at the Coliseum. Pryor answered questions to the media after practice and said he felt great and was ready to go.

Pryor has to jump through one more hoop and pass non-mandated tests by the Raiders to see if he would start on Sunday although it was reported likely that he will be start against Washington. Raider head coach Dennis Allen said, “it’s something that has to be done, it’s something that we want to do to make sure. I want to make sure were making the right decision for this kid” said Allen.

While Pryor appreciated being checked over by the Raiders team physicians he said that he felt 100 percent. Pryor’s injury occurred last Monday night in Denver in a helmet to helmet tackle by the Broncos Wesley Woodward, the hit gave Pryor a concussion in the fourth quarter of the game and Pryor was replaced by back up quarterback Matt Flynn.

Allen said he could not make an announcement on Pryor until he gets more information by team doctors he didn’t have an answer on Saturday and the team should have an announcement before game time on Sunday morning.

Pryor could miss more games with Raiders

by David Zizmor

ALAMEDA–The Raiders this week have said that starting quarterback Terrelle Pryor was out with a concussion and he will not start in this game against Washington and back up Matt Flynn will take the reigns and he’s going to be the starter versus Washington this Sunday at the Coliseum. Flynn hasn’t actually started in awhile and he only played a few snaps last year for the Seahawks.

Even when Flynn was with the Green Bay Packers he only started only a handful of games barely in injury situations and Flynn isn’t that much more experienced than Pryor at this point and beyond that Flynn has not been all that impressive even in the pre season and there is a reason why Pryor came out for the starting job because Pryor was playing a lot better.

Frankly you watch his play this season you wouldn’t know that Pryor wasn’t going to be a great quarterback but he could be a solid above average quarterback in this league and Pryor has shown flashes of goodness. Flynn has to prove us wrong he has to prove that he’s a better than average quarterback and that he’s better than just a back up. That will be his job this week to show that he could do a go job and convince people that he’s a player worth having on your team.

To be honest he doesn’t look like he’s going to be anything special, the one thing that he has going for him is that he happens to be playing against one of the worse defenses in the league in Washington. They have been absolutely awful this season. They’re giving up a ton of points and a ton of yards. So in that respect Flynn had a slightly easier job that he would have had otherwise because this Washington defense is terrible.

This gives him an advantage here compare to the other teams that he had to play, how long Pryor is going to be out is anybody’s guess and this is a concussion and there’s not a particularly good way to tell how long a concussion will last or the effects of a concussion. This is something that’s going to be continually evaluated and Pryor will be ready when he’s ready and not before than.

The NFL is taking a very strict stance on concussion evaluations they’re very conservative about it with all these lawsuits that have been going on about concussions. So you could bet that their not going to rush him back before he’s ready. We’ll see if Pryor is back before the San Diego game. Hopefully Flynn plays well enough against Washington this Sunday that he’ll feel a little more confident going into that San Diego game if he happens to be the quarterback for that game as well.

With concussions it’s pretty much a wait and see approach you have to evaluate them every week according to certain protocol that the league has set up. We won’t know how long Pryor will be out and it’s hard to project the impact of these injuries. It can be short or they can be long and they want to make sure the players don’t come back before they’re ready. We’ll have to wait and see on that one, hopefully Flynn does well this weekend.

Quarterback uncertainty with Washington coming to Oakland Sunday

Terrelle Pryor

By. Joe Hawkes-Beamon

OAKLAND — Oakland Raiders starting quarterback Terrelle Pryor has been medically cleared for full contact, but it’s still uncertain if Pryor or backup Matt Flynn will be under center when the Silver and Black take the field against the down-trodden Washington Redskins Sunday at O.co Coliseum.

According to CSNCalifornia.com Raiders’ insider Scott Bair, Oakland will not announce a starter before Sunday’s game, partially for competitive reasons.

This is the first meeting between the two teams since 2009.

Pryor, who sustained a concussion after taking a helmet-to-chin hit from Broncos linebacker Wesley Woodyard Monday night during Oakland’s 37-21 loss in Denver, was listed as questionable on the team’s injury report, but saw an increased workload after participating in practice Thursday and Friday.

Against the aggressive Denver defense, Pryor had a career-best quarterback rating of 112.4, completing 19 of 28 passes for 281 yards and, including a 73-yard touchdown catch and run by speedster Denarius Moore.

Whichever quarterback starts for Oakland (1-2), the game plan should feature a heavy dose of running back Darren McFadden. Washington is surrendering a league-worst 155 yards per game on the ground and has given up at least 130 yards rushing in two of their three losses on the season.

McFadden arguably had his worst game of his career Monday night, rushing for just 9 yards on 12 carries (0.8 yards per attempt). McFadden did have two touchdowns, one on a 1-yard run and the other, a 16-yard pass to fullback Marcel Reese, but he should be the Raiders’ workhorse come Sunday.

Washington (0-3) is off to a rough start to the season, to say the least.

Starting quarterback Robert Griffin III is coming off a third-straight 300-yard passing game, but Washington couldn’t overcome two critical fumbles in the fourth quarter and dropped a backbreaker to the Detroit Lions, 27-20 at home.

Running back Alfred Morris finished with 15 carries for 73 yards and  a touchdown.

The game is expected to be a sell out and will be seen locally on FOX/KTVU Ch. 2 at 1:25 p.m. PDT.

Players to Watch for Washington:

  • No. 10) Robert Griffin III (QB) – After not playing a single second during the preseason while recovering from offseason knee surgery to repair his ACL, Griffin is still shaking off the rust but appears to be playing better. The second-year quarter from Baylor is sixth in the league among quarterbacks with five touchdown passes.
  • No. 46) Alfred Morris (RB) – Outside of Griffin, Morris is Washington’s next best offensive weapon. Morris finished second to Adrian Peterson in  both rushing yards (1,613), touchdowns (13), and third in rushes (335) in 2012. Morris has rushed for 225 yards and two touchdowns on 40 carries so far in 2013.
  • No. 91) Ryan Kerrigan (OLB) – Kerrigan, along with teammate Perry Riley, Washington has significant punch in the pass rushing department and Oakland has a leaky offensive line. Kerrigan leads Washington with three sacks this season and five quarterback pressures, while Riley leads Washington in tackles with 29.

Players to Watch for Oakland:

  • No. 17) Denarius Moore (WR) – Sure I said that Oakland needs to feed the ball to McFadden earlier, but Moore is starting to be the dependable wide receiver that Oakland is drastically looking for. Moore had six receptions of 124 receiving yards and a touchdown Monday night. Look for Washington’s veteran cornerback DeAngelo Hall to shadow Moore.
  • No. 94) Kevin Burnett (MLB) – Burnett was very active in Denver, finishing with a game-high 10 tackles. Burnett will have his hands full keeping an eye on Morris.
  • No. 79) Tony Pashos (OT) – The veteran Pashos will draw the assignment of trying to block Kerrigan one-on-one. If Pashos is able to prevent Kerrigan from having a big day, Oakland has a great chance of keeping its quarterback upright.

Pryor’s concussion might keep starter out team looks to Flynn

By David Zizmor

ALAMEDA–The Raiders who have a short week on hand after playing on Monday night in a 37-21 loss to the Denver Broncos at Mile High have now found out on Tuesday that their starting quarterback Terrelle Pryor maybe out for this Sunday’s game in Oakland against Washington with a concussion. Pryor took a helmet from the Broncos Wesley Woodward in the fourth quarter and seeing stars right after. The hit was bad enough where Pryor was replaced by back up Matt Flynn.

The Raiders have said that Pryor will not be allowed to practice until he goes through the league mandated protocol and have been seen by team doctors and medical staff to approve whether he will be allowed to start on Sunday or not. It was also reported that Pryor was not able to recall a lot of the game and that his memory was blurred. It’s not official yet that Flynn will get the call. “We’ll look and see how he’s doing tomorrow, we’ll see if he’s able to go or not. Then we’ll see as the week goes on and make a determination and what we can do” said Raider head coach Dennis Allen.

Pryor is more mobile and Flynn is more stationary, Allen tweaked the offense to make it work for Pryor’s mobility but with Flynn being more stationary Allen will have to tweak the offense again, “it’s a bit of a challenge but that’s where were at and that’s what we’ve got to get ready to do so. So we’ve got to have a game plan, if Terrelle’s able to go in and execute and give us a chance to win. If not, we’ve got to have something in there that gives Matt Flynn a chance to have success” said Allen.

Looking ahead at Washington and San Diego games: The Oakland Raiders face Washington and San Diego in their next two games and these are two teams that the Raiders might have a chance at winning but for the Raiders there isn’t such a thing as an easy win on their schedule. Jacksonville two weeks ago might be the closest that their going to get and they did manage to pull that game off. With Washington and San Diego it’s anybody’s guess.

Washington and San Diego comes out to Oakland so the Raiders at least get two home games back to back and that gives them a little bit of an edge regardless of what’s going on and where their playing this is still going to be a team that’s going to struggle and it’s not going to be an easy victory here and coming off this game against the Broncos last Monday it’s anybody’s guess on how the Raiders are going to take it.

After the first two games they might have had a little bit of confidence and they played very well in their loss against Indianapolis and then they beat up on Jacksonville and they were out there thinking they got something going on and then Denver whose one of the best teams in the league comes out and knocks the Raiders back. It’ll be interesting to see how the Raiders respond to that if they feel like their confidence is shaken.

The Raiders could come back fighting even harder with all their problems as we’ve been saying this isn’t the most talented team in the NFL so they have to play with a lot of heart and a lot of fight and you got to hope they don’t get knocked out by a team like Denver. For the Washington game Washington is not having a great season either their winless and nobody would have thought Washington would be 0-3 at this stage.

Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III is still struggling from his knee injury last year and while he’s been cleared to play he certainly hasn’t looked like his old self he’s not running around as much and his leg just doesn’t plant properly and it doesn’t look right when he throws. There is definitely something wrong there and he’s not fully recovered and maybe the Raiders can take advantage of that.

Manning makes history in win

By Jeremy Kahn

Peyton Manning is like a fine wine, he just gets better with age and he is proving it week after week.

Manning went 32-for-37 for 374 yards passing with three touchdowns, as the Denver Broncos defeated the Oakland Raiders 37-21 at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

With the victory, the Broncos have won 14 consecutive regular games, tying the 1998 team for consecutive wins in team history and the Broncos won the Super Bowl that season over the Atlanta Falcons by the final score of 34-19 in Miami.

With three more touchdown passes on the evening, Manning passes Tom Brady for the most touchdown passes thru three games, as the 16-year veteran has thrown 12 touchdowns.

Brady set the record in 2011, and Manning has yet to be intercepted on the season, tying Michael Vick’s 2010 record when he threw 12 touchdowns before his frat interception.

Terrelle Pryor was forced to leave the game with a concussion, but before leaving, Pryor went 19-for-28 for 281 yards.

Pryor threw a 73-yard touchdown pass to Denarius Moore that cut the Broncos down to 17-7 midway thru the second quarter.

Darren McFadden was held to just nine yards on the ground, but did throw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Marcel Reece with 17 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

Raiders face tough test in Denver

By Joe Hawkes-Beamon

OAKLAND — Looking to build off the 19-9 victory in their home opener Sunday over the pathetic Jacksonville Jaguars, the Oakland Raiders head into Denver to face the Broncos on ESPN’s Monday Night Football to wrap up Week 3 in the NFL. Oakland picked up their first win of the season behind a stellar rushing attack, racking up 226 yards.

Running back Darren McFadden was a monster, rushing for 129 yards, including three runs of 20-or-more yards. Terrelle Pryor added in 50 rushing yards, while finishing 15-of-24 for 126 yards passing. Fullback Marcel Reese scored Oakland’s (1-1) only touchdown, on a 11-yard run in the first quarter of Sunday’s game.

What does that say?

Oakland will need more from Pryor and Co. but if Oakland has any chance of winning Monday night, it’s fifth-ranked defense will have to answer the bell against Denver’s third-ranked offense. Oakland leads the NFL with nine sacks on the season after sacking Jaguars quarterback, Chad Henne five times Sunday.  With the news of stellar Broncos’ All-Pro left tackle Ryan Clady being lost for the season with a Lis-franc sprain, Oakland’s defensive line could be the difference.

Manning and the Broncos (2-0) return home after beating the New York Giants 41-23 at MetLife Stadium Sunday. After passing for a career-high seven touchdowns in Week 1, Manning was virtually flawless completing 30-of-43 passes for 307 yards and two touchdowns in the road win. Denver’s offense totaled 416 yards.

Believe me after seeing that performance, Oakland will have it’s hands full against one of the best quarterbacks to ever play in the NFL, but Raiders head coach welcomes the challenge.

“This will be the best team we’ve faced and they’re very talented,” Allen said Monday, “so we’re going to have to do a good job of changing things up and mixing some things up, mixing up some looks and be able to play a good, team game.”

Players to Watch for Oakland:

  • No. 2) Terrelle Pryor (QB) — Pryor picked up his first home win (and first win of his career) against Jacksonville and will look to pick up his first road win of his career on national television Monday night. Pryor leads all quarterbacks with 162 rushing yards.
  • No. 24) Charles Woodson (FS) — The Raiders’ veteran starting free safety will be the one who will have to get Oakland’s secondary in place to defend a bevy of Broncos pass-catchers. Woodson finished with six tackles against Jacksonville Sunday.
  • No. 25) D.J. Hayden (CB) — Manning loves testing rookies and Hayden will see a lot of Broncos’ sensational wide receiver, Demaryius Thomas. Good luck.

Players to Watch for Denver:

  • No. 83) Wes Welker (WR) — You think that Tom Brady wishes he had the reliable Welker now?
  • No. 80) Julian Thomas (TE) — Looks like a younger version of San Diego Chargers standout, Antonio Gates. Thomas played power forward at Portland St. In his first start, Thomas recorded five catches for 110 yards and two touchdowns.
  • No. 11) Trindon Holliday (KR) — The reigning AFC Player of the Week  was a blur on his 81-yard punt return for a touchdown that put the final dagger in the Giants’ hearts. The return highlighted Holliday’s day, where he saw four punts and returning them for a 30.3 yards per return. Through two weeks, Holliday is averaging a league-high 19.6 yards per return.

Raiders cut Kluwe and Wilson, pick up McClain and Sanford

by David Zizmor

ALAMEDA–The Raiders held the press releases of who was getting cut from the team after the pre season concluded on Saturday and the team made sure that the players didn’t use twitter to tweet who got cut from the team. The Raiders were the last team to release the list of cuts in the NFL. The biggest name that got cut was Andre Carter the man originally drafted by the 49ers about ten years ago he’s made his way around the league.
It’s a bit surprising that Carter was cut because the Raiders defense is so inexperienced that Carter was one of the few players on that team that had some pass rushing success. So seeing Carter go was a bit surprising because they really don’t have any other pass rushers and that’s an area where their going to be very deficient.
If you want to take a look at some strange things you could look at the Raiders roster and where they were they started Sunday with two punters and four quarterbacks that was very unusual but Sundayafternoon the Raiders cut quarterack Tyler Wilson and punter Chrs Kluwe. The three Raiders quarterbacks that remain are Matt Flynn, Terrelle Pryor, and Matt McGloin and punter Marquette King.  Most teams keep only three quarterbacks and one punter, the Raiders decided they couldn’t make a decision on either of those decisions Saturday but decided Sunday they had to make a move with Kluwe and Wilson leaving the Raiders to pick up guard Antonie McClain from the Baltimore Ravens and and defensive tackle Brian Sanford from the Cleveland Browns . With the quarterbacks it makes sense for the simple fact of the matter they have three guys and they needed help in other areas and that’s why they made room for McClain and Sanford.
The Raiders traded for quarterback Matt Flynn, Terrelle Pryor had been pretty decent in the pre season they wouldn’t cut him. They drafted Tyler Wilson in the fourth round and they cut him he didn’t play all that well in the pre season and frankly he didn’t play all that well in the fourth game. Then there was Matt McGloin an undrafted free agent out of Penn State he looked pretty good in the pre season and expected that he would make the team when they signed him in the first place.
McGloin played so well in the pre season the Raiders were left no choice and the final choice came down to McGloin and Wilson and while Wilson didn’t prove himself the Raiders felt that they couldn’t waste him and they didn’t want to admit wasting a fourth round pick so soon so the Raiders had to keep him one way or the other that all changed when the Raiders had the need for McClain and Sanford in the guard and tackle positions.
As for the punting situation the Raiders made a point of releasing Kluwe he’s a good punter but not a great punter, this after letting Shane Lechler the Raiders long time punter go in the off season the bottom line in these cuts is nobody knew what the Raiders were doing. There had been some word that the Raiders would try to trade one of their punters it’s not like there’s a ton of punter trades that happens in the NFL but the Raiders have kept King as their punter and cut Kluwe.
So the Raiders will have settled on going with King, their going with one punter instead of two, they like King and feel he could help the team most with long kicks and what they’ve seen of him in pre season.
If you look at the remaining cuts that the Raiders made there’s no names that really stand out, on the Raiders roster there’s a lot of guys you never heard of it was going to be the case one way or the other. Again it’s going to be a long season the Raiders are going to have to find guys they think that can produce and that’s what they believe and that’s what they’ve done.

Pryor struggles in Raiders loss

By Jeremy Kahn

August 29, 2013

What a decision the brain trust of Mark Davis, Reggie McKenzie and Dennis Allen is dealing with, as the regular season is a week away.

That decision is who to start at quarterback for the Oakland Raiders against the Indianapolis Colts on September 8 at Lucas Oil Field.

In his final tuneup of the preseason, Terrelle Pryor struggled, as the Seattle Seahawks defeated the Raiders 22-6 at CenturyLink Field.

Pryor went 3-for-8 for just 31 yards passing, as the Raiders ended the preseason with a record of 1-3.

Matt Flynn, who is in competition for the starting job at quarterback did not even play in the preseason finale.

Rashad Jennings led the Raiders in rushing on the night, as he carried the ball six times for 53 yards.

Despite completing just three passes on the evening, Pryor did find Rod Streater for two separate 14 yard completions.

Justin Medlock accounted for all the scoring for the Raiders, as he kicked two field goals on the evening.

Tarvaris Jackson is making a great case to be the backup behind Russell Wilson for the Seahawks, as he went 12-for-17 for 119 yards

D.J. Hayden to start Friday vs. Bears; Offensive line woes

By Joe Hawkes-Beamon

August 21, 2013

OAKLAND, Calif – The wait to see what D.J. Hayden can do on a professional football field is finally over.

Hayden, who is coming off a gruesome injury where he tore a vein in his heart, finally participated in practice Monday after not participating for most of training camp. It was Hayden’s first full contact practice since he sustained the injury last November while at the University of Houston. The type of injury that Hayden suffered has a 95 percent fatality rate and normally happens only in car accidents.

Raiders head coach Dennis Allen confirmed Monday that the No. 12 overall pick will make his debut Friday night against the Chicago Bears in Oakland’s final home game of the exhibition season. Hayden will start in place of the injured Tracy Porter, who is out with a groin injury.

As much as the spotlight will be on Hayden, the spotlight will also hover over the offensive line Friday night.

In last week’s 28-20 loss in New Orleans, Oakland’s offensive line couldn’t pick up the Saints’ blitzes and gave up seven sacks (quarterback Matt Flynn was sacked five times).

“It was just a lack of communication and execution and we just can’t let that happen,” said Flynn, who finished 12-of-16 for 124 yards passing, including an 18-yard touchdown to Denarius Moore in the second quarter.

With the devastating loss of anchor left tackle, Jared Veldheer, Oakland will be playing musical chairs along the offensive line.

Former St. Louis Rams’ first-rounder Alex Barron steps in for Veldheer and will get first crack at filling his shoes at left tackle. Barron has 74 starts in 76 career games.

Oakland signed veteran offensive tackle Tony Hills Tuesday, but Hills is just expected to help the Raiders get through training camp.

The Bears defeated the San Diego Chargers, 33-28 last Thursday in Chicago. Bears quarterback Jay Cutler completed 4-of-5 passes for 38 yards, including a touchdown to his go-to target, Brandon Marshall.

Extra Points:

• Per Raiders Insider for CSNCalifornia.com Scott Bair, backup quarterback Terrelle Pryor switched his No. 6 jersey for No. 2 on Wednesday. Pryor wore No. 2 in college at Ohio St., but No. 2 for Oakland was last worn by former first-round bust JaMarcus Russell. Only two quarterbacks have ever worn No. 2 in Raiders’ history, Russell and Aaron Brooks. Both quarterbacks are a combined 7-26, with Brooks 0-8.

• Raiders’ legend Ray Guy has been named a finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame by the Hall of Fame’s Senior Selection committee Wednesday. Guy, who spent his entire 14-year career with the Silver and Black, was a seven-time Pro Bowler, a six-time All-Pro and a three-time Super Bowl champion.
