San Francisco 49ers update: The way the 49ers offense is going to work at least in the back field anyway it’s going to be a combination of running backs Carlos Hyde and Reggie Bush. Bush’s specialty is receiving which is what he’s most successful at. That’s where he’s made his hay as an NFL running back, he did have a successful year or two in Miami where he ran the ball pretty well. He’s not a bad runner he can carry the ball but his specialty is catching the ball.

Your going to see him more often than not and why he’s a great receiver and Hyde is the bigger stronger receiver he the kind of guy you want to see on first or second down that can go against the tough guards who go and get tackles. Bush is a guy who is not quite as big he can’t get between the tackles quite as well. He’s an outside runner, you got that outside speed that’s where you want to use him. Hyde he can go inside and outside.

He’s the guy whose the first and second down back and Hyde to his credit is actually a pretty good receiver, he might even be there on third down. It’s going to be interesting to see exactly how much they plan to use him. The thing is you always figure when you make the effort to go out and sign a guy like Bush your intention is actually to use him. The 49ers have a very high draft pick on Hyde and last season he got quite a few reps as a rookie that was with Frank Gore who is one of the all time greats.

Oakland Raiders update: The Raiders open up their regular season against Cincinnati and Baltimore and go on the road against Cleveland and Chicago. The two teams to open at home the Bengals and the Ravens that’s a tough way to open the season. Obviously it’s nice for the Raiders to have the home field advantage where Raider Nation can yell their hearts out. It certainly will be amped up after an entire off season dreaming about quarterback Derrek Carr to Amari Cooper and running back Latavius Murray getting more carries.

Michael Crabtree had a stuff it in your face career when he was with the 49ers and looks ready to get started with the Raiders. The Bengals look like a playoff team, the Ravens didn’t make the playoffs last season their always competitive and their tough. The Ravens have a very tough defense year in and year out. Having a bit of a down season the Ravens are going to come in with a bit of chip on their shoulder. These two teams coming in the Bengals and the Ravens are not going to be pushovers and be easy to beat.

The Bengals have offensive coordinator Hue Jackson in there and maybe he’ll want a little revenge after his time with the Raiders and so unceremoniously. The Raiders always have a chance at this stage in July its tough to draw any conclusions. As they say on any given Sunday one team could beat another. So the Raiders aren’t going to necessarily lose these games, given the talent on these two teams and what we’ve seen from them the Raiders are certainly underdogs against the Bengals and the Ravens for week one and two.

George Devine Sr’s last podcast from Swiss Louis Restaurant March 6, 2014

This was George Sr’s last podcast with Sportstalk before he had to leave to take care of his brother Peter after his accident. George Sr hosted the program with Stefani Rebekah Black, Matt Harrington, Jeremy Harness,Peter Qaqundah, Morris Phillips, Kahlil Najar, and Lee Leonard (producer).

George Sr was the host on this night. George thought fondly on Stefani for her hard work in her coverage of the Oakland Raiders and her passion of covering the team they worked together for years from their days from covering the Raiders at the Oakland Coliseum.

It was a great night with seafood and lots of favorites on the menu at Swiss Louis on Pier 39. It rained that night and George Sr took the F line back downtown in order to get back home. It’s one of the few recordings we have left of George Sr. please enjoy the podcast.

San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders podcast with David Zizmor Sat Jul 11, 2015

by David Zizmor

OAKLAND–(49ers update)49ers Head coach Jim Tomsula will have his hands full in camp with filling the openings created by 49er players that retired in the off season. They have a lot of positions to fill, first they have to handle the openings created by linebacker Chris Borland and Patrick Willis.

This task is going to be a really tough task as Willis was unexpected and Borland was even more unexpected, more importantly Borland was going to be a replacement for Willis. Then you have Justin Smith on the defensive line and Anthony Davis right tackle who retired.

Davis might be one of the toughest ones to replace because he did it the latest in the off season. Willis and Borland those guys left before the draft so the 49ers were able to account for that through free agency in the NFL draft.

Justin Smith that was later but at the same time the Niners saw the writing on the wall and he’s been around for about 15 years as his retirement was rumored for the last few years. So Smith’s retirement wasn’t necessarily a surprise. Given the other retirements prior to Smith those were difficult to deal with but the Niners were prepared for the loss of Smith.

Oakland Raiders update: The late Kenny Stabler who passed away this pass week at the age of 69 some said that if he was in today’s game he would not make it because of his smaller size and that he couldn’t run away from today’s defenders in the NFL. The San Francisco Chronicle’s Bruce Jenkins said that theory was a bunch of baloney and that Stabler would be more like one of the outstanding quarterbacks in the NFL today. He said that the 49ers Colin Kaepernick for example has only ten percent of Stabler’s instincts.

First of all Jenkins is a great writer but with all due respect it’s a little unfair to compare Kaepernick to Stabler they were two very different players in different times. Stabler this is a guy who won on his grit and determination and his intellect. Stabler was super smart, he wasn’t an athlete in the same mold that Kaepernick is.

Their asked to do different things and that’s kind of a weird comparison to be honest but let’s forget about that, Kenny Stabler was a great quarterback the fact that he’s not in the Hall of Fame is a big sticking point for Oakland Raider fans everywhere and they have a good beef there are plenty of other quarterbacks in the Hall of Fame who weren’t as particularl great as Stabler.

Staber was a great quarterback, it was his on field leadership, his connection with his players, whether it was Fred Biletnikoff, Dave Casper, Cliff Branch, Stabler knew where these guys were going to be on the field to make the big play. Anybody whose seen the highlight reel of the glory days of the Raiders from the 70s knew Stabler was involved in almost every critical play.

San Francisco 49ers update: 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick is a guy whose only looking to improve for the 2015 season he had some success in the league and he certainly has looked good in post season which he demonstrated against the Green Bay Packers a few years ago when he set an NFL rushing record for quarterbacks not just in the playoffs but in the entire history of the NFL.

Kaepernick ran for 180 rushing yards in that Packers playoff game and then in the championship game he won and took them to the Super Bowl, he almost won them a Super Bowl and the following season he beat the Packers in another great post season game. He lost a heartbreaker to the Seattle Seahawks right at the end of regulation.

They made that game close because he ran that game well in the second half, last season a lot of people think he regressed a little bit. His passing numbers were not that great, his rushing numbers were down and he didn’t look quite as good as he had or dynamic as he had in the past. I don’t know if that’s entirely fair, he suffered 55 sacks and that’s a large part of it and that’s because the offensive line didn’t play that well.

Oakland Raiders update: When the Raiders hired a guy like head coach Jack Del Rio your looking for improvement on the defensive side of the ball and that’s what his focus will be on. For Del Rio he’s going to lead the offense and he’s the offensive coordinator not that he’s going to have his fingers all over the offense.

Del Rio is not an offensive guru however he’s the guy known for his defense or let’s say he’s known for his ability to motivate the team. He was able to motivate his team when he was head coach for the Tampa Bay Bucs and they were a team that followed him into battle each week. He’s big on the offensive side of the defense he’s going to rally the troops in Oakland.

The Raiders their a team that’s trying to grow that defense which has been a problem. The offense has some interesting pieces and we talked about this on the show already. They have quarterback Derrek Carr who looks to be a very great young quarterback, they have wide receiver Amari Cooper who they got in the first round in the draft who looks like he’s going to be an excellent receiver.

San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders podcast with David Zizmor: 49ers may have to look forward to 2016 draft for retiree replacements; Raiders expect lots from Murray at running back

by David Zizmor

San Francisco 49ers camp update: When the San Francisco 49ers were wrought with four players retiring in the off season and well before their time at that. These were guys who were all starters that’s tough to replace. Anthony Davis is the most recent retiree he retired after the draft the Niners didn’t even have an opportunity to approach their draft with the knowledge that they would replace Davis at right tackle.

The Davis retirement was probably the toughest one of them all. The 2016 draft is going to be in Virginia they did this year’s draft in Chicago it had always been in New York the NFL realized that the draft is a money generator. You just don’t need to do it in New York you could do it anywhere and people will show up.

Chicago was there first choice Chicago is a great town, and anybody whose been there would agree. They have very dedicated fans with the Bears and it’s centrally located you have a lot of people down from Green Bay, Detroit, Indianapolis, and those places are from shouting distance and it’s certainly an easy drive from each other.

What the NFL is doing now is trying to spread the love around and their going to accommodate Washington their the closest team to Virginia. This is going to be a Washington draft it’s not as far away as Philadelphia frankly New York isn’t all that far. Pittsburgh, Carolina, those towns are all relatively close to each other as the draft will be held in Virginia in 16.

Oakland Raiders camp update: Running back Latavius Murray who is expected to take over the starting position from ex-Raider Darren McFadden. Murray who was with the Raiders last season rushed for 424 yards, two touchdowns, while picking up 5.2 yards per carry. He had a strong 2014 season when he was on the field if you were watching the Raiders down the stretch you would notice him, he definitely stood out when he was out on the field.

The issue so far in his career is keeping him on the field, Murray is a guy who has a lot talent and he has to play. Murray has had a series of injuries that’s been a little bit rough but if he continues to improve your talking about a guy who has the talent to be an every down back in the NFL. We saw him make amazing plays last season.

Murray had that one big run against Kansas City this is a guy given the opportunity and given a decent offensive line he could be very successful. It’s still tough to say as I said he needs to stay on the field, the talent level is there the Raiders are very hopeful he doesn’t have Maurice Jones Drew blocking his path to the starting position anymore like he did last year.

This is a guy who has speed, he has power, size, he can be a every down back if he wants he’s a little bit successful. The biggest thing he’s got going for him this year is the offense looks more rounded. The one problem the Raiders had last year was quarterback Derrick Carr was improving but he didn’t have any wide receivers to throw to which meant teams could challenge him.

San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders podcast with David Zizmor Sat Jun 20, 2015

by David Zizmor

This is the most unusual off season for any team the San Francisco 49ers haven’t had to deal with any significant legal issues of late. Ray McDonald is gone he was a member of the Chicago Bears for a short time. The 49ers have had to deal with a string of unexpected retirements, Justin Smith was the only one that was kind of expected.

Patrick Willis, Chris Borland, and Anthony Davis, your talking about three starters there who all retired these are guys at least as far as the NFL is concerned that were not at the end of their careers. Borland was just entering his second season, Willis was going to enter his tenth and Davis was entering his fifth season. Davis was a young guy he was only like 25.

Davis entered the league pretty young in the first place these were all guys who were starters, Willis is a guy who could be in the Hall of Fame someday. Borland was a borderline rookie of the year and Davis made one Pro Bowl were talking about some real high quality starters who all retired without any foreknowledge of the media or the 49ers.

The 49ers didn’t anticipate it, the media didn’t anticipate it either they certainly had no clue that these retirements were coming. So to be able to fill those holes on short notice is really going to bring a lot competition in the 49ers camp this coming July. Davis’ position at right tackle that’s going to be the biggest one because his retirement was well after the draft.

Oakland Raiders update: You look at the Raiders and the Niners and two years ago the Niners were coming off a Super Bowl loss and it looked like they were going to be competitive for a long time. The Raiders were just awful they had no talent on their roster. They were rebuilding about the fifth year in the row and that’s what it seems like.

The Raiders were going nowhere and now the Niners seems to be the team that’s stuck in neutral and nobody seems to know what their doing. The Raiders well I’m not going to sit here and tell you that the Raiders are going to be a playoff team. You look at that team and they have a lot to do. The Raiders have some sort of direction.

They seemed to have an upward trend, they picked quarterback Derek Carr last season in the draft and he got into the starting line up a few games into the season and from the time he started he looked like he was gong to be a good player. Carr seemed to improve over the course of the season, he needed some help the Raiders didn’t have much of a running game.

Their receiving core needed some improvement, the Raiders seemed to address that in the draft and their getting better Carr looks like a long term keeper. It’s not known if he’s going to be a Pro Bowler but he definitely looks like he could be a strong starting quarterback in the NFL. That’s a big deal that’s something that the Raiders haven’t had in a long time.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Remembering Ron Bergman former Oakland A’s beat writer

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez

ANAHEIM–Ron “Bergy” Bergman documented and coined the phrase the “Swingin’ A’s” during the 1970’s and the Oakland Athletics dynasty(1972-73-74)winning three consecutive World Series, they are the only team that has done that, winning three World Series in a row aside from the New York Yankees in Major League baseball history. The Yankees won five straight World Series the fifth one being in 1953. Bergman passed away at age 80.

Everybody that knew him called him “Bergy”.he was born in Philadelphia, January 1, 1935. Graduated from Washington High School in San Francisco was the sports editor for Cal-Berkeley of the Daily Californian from 1959-1960, previously served his country in the US Navy from 1955 to 1957. Worked for the Oroville Mercury Register, the Oakland Tribune, the Associated Press, and the San Jose Mercury News.

Today players and co-workers alike expressed their feelings in remembering “Bergy”, and these where some the words most used: skilled, witty, fair, honest, story-teller. Aside from the Oakland Athletics he also covered the Oakland Raiders and the Golden State Warriors. Ron Bergman also covered other stories, aside from sports, like the last Beatles concert which was held at Candlestick Park, San Francisco in 1966.

He was always curious searching for information and every time I spoke with him, in the press box at the Oakland Coliseum he would asked me stuff about Hispanic players and gave me his opinions on many issues, as we chatted and spoke mostly about baseball.

Ron passed this Thursday at Sunrise of Oakland Hills, Oakland, California, of complications from Parkinson’s disease; surviving children are Anne and Adam, his former wife Sally, his brother Jim and two grandchildren. This past March Nick Peters passed, followed in April,by Lon Simmons, they must be building a heck of a league in Heaven.

Rest in Peace Bergy.

NFL podcast with Tony Renteria: Carr excited about new playbook and Crabtree; League tosses tough first two games on Raider sked

by Tony Renteria

The Oakland Raiders are no doubt pretty excited to see wide receiver Michael Crabtree in camp with them and it’s about time he shed his diva attitude and there’s a lot he needs to prove with the Raiders. What he’s really trying to do is trying to be the player that everybody needs around and maybe he could put up some numbers and get a huge contract in his third year.

Crabtree and Raider quarterback Derrek Carr are getting along great and are cohesive and if Crabtree was able to perform up to his level and full potential he could end up being the number one receiver that the Raiders actually need to have on their team. The Raiders have done almost everything that they need to do in this off season.

The Raiders need to land a number one wide receiver and the draft should be able to bring that for them with a recruit like Amari Cooper from Alabama. You never know what Raider General Manager Reggie McKenzie has up his sleeve, let’s see what happens he’s been a very slow tried but true GM full stride.

He has gone down a different path saying, “let’s do this, let’s do that” he had two big openings to fill at quarterback with former Raider quarterbacks Matt Schaub and Matt Flynn who didn’t work out. Other than that McKenzie has put together a great group of young core talent of quality guys who can actually play some football. Last year’s draft he hit a home run with Khalil Mack and starting Carr so there’s so much to look forward to this season.

The Raiders offense are going to a quick no huddle type offense and Carr is thrilled about that because that’s the kind of offense he ran in college. Carr is going to go back to what he knows the best throw the football around the football field and keep an up tempo kind of style. Adding in a couple different positions here and there and going into the season with all these quarterbacks trying out in training camp and doing their reps will help Carr build some kind of chemistry.

Aaron Hernandez trial podcast with Tony Renteira: Hernandez plans on appeal; circumstantial evidence overwhelms jurors

by Tony Renteria

You talk about circumstantial evidence in the Aaron Hernandez trial the prosecuting lawyer said that circumstantial evidence could be just as powerful as regular evidence. If you go to bed at night and you wake up and there is snow on the ground you know it snowed in the middle of the night even though you didn’t see it that’s kind of the context of what were talking about.

There is so much circumstantial evidence against Hernandez it’s just obvious that he committed this crime. You have to think of the evidence as the straw that breaks the camel’s back. There was just so much of this and that that each one of those degrees of evidence just kind of overwhelmed the jury where he was at the time of the crime.

There was so much to overcome and Hernandez never looked like an innocent guy during the trial he looked like a well dressed thug. He never showed any emotion during the trial and even when the verdict was read. When you listen to what the jury said they took a long time to decide only because there were so many charges to sort out.

There were two other friends with Hernandez during the shooting and there was the question of the three who was the trigger man in killing Hernandez’ associate Odin Lloyd? That should be answered by the fact that Hernandez was convicted for first degree murder and the prosecution established that it’s not like he wasn’t there and he has another murder charge coming from a double homicide that is being brought forward.

Hernandez has a second murder charge coming from a double homicide from what the legal experts say the second murder charge is more convincing than the first one. So it’s not like this guy was a good guy and he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was a bad guy the only thing prior to him being found out was all he could do is catch a football.

How important was the circumstantial evidence was? There were so many important pieces of evidence and they were all important, there were so many important pieces. It wasn’t as though the prosecution had to have a smoking gun that’s how important the circumstantial evidence was. They never had the murder weapon and they still got a first degree murder conviction.

NFL Podcast with Tony Renteria: Hernandez case nearly tainted by TV station; Former 49er set to appear in court for assault

by Tony Renteria

Two jurors in the Aaron Hernandez murder trial clam they saw a commercial company car that turned out to belong to WHDH TV driving in a remote parking lost where they were parked and was driven by the cameraman. Judge Susan Garsh admonished a WHDH reporter in the courtroom. The cameraman has since been banned from the courthouse grounds until a verdict in the Hernandez case has been rendered. Everything is under a microscope here and a tainted jury is the last thing you want when the case is close to be decided by the jury at any day now.

Especially in a case that is high profile like the Hernandez case, it seems like everybody in the news cycle is looking for the next big story. God forbid if somebody in the media kind of taints the case by doing their job and being over zealous in their job. I feel sorry for the people of Massachusetts to have to pay for a second trial.

On Tuesday former 49er lineman Kwame Harris was arrested for assault for attempting to bite a police officer in San Francisco. Harris was found asleep in a Audi Sedan with the engine running. Cops were investigating a hit and run in the neighborhood. It seems like every week we have to talk about a 49er having legal troubles whether it’s an active player or now in this case a retired player whose in trouble with the law.I have to wonder what happened to the 49ers organization it’s almost like a broken record that the 49ers are having problems with the law. There was that little joke that was around the media the NFL stands for the National Felon League but the 49ers have taken it to the extreme.

Bill Musgrave Oakland Raiders coordinator: Musgrave is kind of a Northern California guy and he is a good coordinator he spent that last year in Chip Kelly’s offense and Kelly moving the ball around and throwing the ball everywhere and it also suits well with Raider quarterback Derek Carr who kind of ran that same kind of offense down in Fresno State.

I’m really looking forward to seeing the numbers the Oakland Raiders are going to put up with the yardage and points. Carr is a very accurate quarterback and give him a chance to put something between the numbers and you don’t have to have a number one or number two guy you could actually accomplish it with some decent receivers.
