The Seattle Mariners beat the Oakland A’s 3-2 Thursday night at T-Mobile Park in Seattle. The Mariners completed a four-game sweep of the A’s. The A’s starting pitcher, J.P.Sears, had an outstanding outing. Sears went five innings, allowing one run and three hits. Sears struck out three and did not walk a batter. His ERA dropped to 4.70.

Trevor May relieved Sears in the sixth inning. The M’s first baseman, Ty France, who homered in the first, took May deep to tie the game. The Mariners’ starter Logan Gilbert gave up two runs in the first inning. Seth Brown homered to give Oakland an early 2-0 lead. Gilbert was lights out after the first.

In his next seven innings of work, Gilbert allowed one hit. He did not issue the A’s a walk. Closer Paul Sewald did his magic and set the A’s down in order in the ninth.

The A’s took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. With one out, Ryan Noda doubled. Gilbert struck out Brent Rooker for the second out. The next hitter, Seth Brown, homered to put the A’s ahead 2-0 midway through the first. The Mariners put one on the board in their half of the first.

In his first game after being hit by a pitch Tuesday night, France hit a solo dinger off Sears. France hit a hanging slider for his fourth home run of 2023. France was 0-for-9 against Sears until his home run. For Sears, it was his 11th gopher ball that he has allowed. The A’s lead 2-1.

There was no scoring until the bottom of the sixth. A’s manager Mark Kotsay brought in reliever Trevor May to pitch. Sears allowed the M’s one hit in the four innings after France’s home run. The first Mariner that May faced was France. May hit France with a pitch Tuesday night.

May suffered a bone bruise and had to leave the game. The best revenge for France would be to hit a home run off May. That is what happened. France homered to tie the game. The score is 2-2 after six.

The Mariners scored a run in the bottom of the eighth. Lefty Richard Lovelady was on the hill for the A’s. Lovelady walked leadoff hitter Jose Caballero. It was the first walk issued by the A’s in the game. Lovelady struck out J.P. Crawford for the first out. The next hitter, France, hit a popup that A’s shortstop, Nick Allen, let drop. Allen threw out Caballero at second.

The A’s took a speedy runner off the bases by erasing Caballero at second. It was a smart move, as Julio Rodriguez doubled. France had to stop at third. The A’s issued an intentional walk to Jarred Kelenic to load the bases.

A’s reliever Garrett Acton walked Eugenio Suarez to force in the Mariners’ third run. The Mariners lead 3-2 after eight.
The Mariners brought in closer Paul Sewald to pitch the ninth. Sewald did the job by setting the A’s down to secure the win for Seattle.

Game Notes- With the loss, the A’s are 10-42 for 2023. They have lost eight in a row. The Mariners are 26-24.

The A’s Sears pitched well for Oakland. Sears gave up a home run in the first inning to France and then went four more innings allowing no runs and one hit. Sears threw 59 pitches. Kotsay said Sears did “a nice job.”

The Mariners’ Gilbert gave up a two-run blast to Brown in the first inning. Gilbert retired 15 hitters until Noda singled in the sixth. Gilbert’s line was eight innings, two runs, and three hits.

Noda had two hits, a single and a double. The A’s only other hit was Brown’s home run in the first inning.

The A’s will host the Houston Astros at the Coliseum for three games starting Friday night. The A’s will send James Kaprielian (0-4, 8.68 ERA) to the mound. The Astros will counter with Hunter Brown(4-1, 3.20ERA)

The time of the game was 2:01 and T Mobile crowd for Thursday night in Seattle 19,268.

Oakland A’s podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: What the tentative agreement between A’s and State of Nevada on ballpark mean

On the Oakland A’s podcast with Jerry F:

#1 The Oakland A’s took another step closer to getting the working for their $1.5 billion ballpark reality as the A’s and the major players in Nevada government have reached tentative agreement. There were no details on what numbers the state or Clark County would be on the hook for?

#2 The power of the government are at hand in making the millions of dollars part of that reality, Governor Joe Lombardo, legislative representatives, Clark County, the Nevada State Treasurer, took the step to make sure they put a financial plan together to get the tax credits lined up in a row.

#3 Jerry, bill language needs to be put together and get passed in the legislature and this needs to be put together before the June 5th deadline. No doubt the legislatures want to get this sorted out before they go on their one year hiatus.

#4 A’s president David Kaval said he’s thrilled about the support he got from the state and Clark County saying , “We look forward to advancing this legislation in a responsible way,”

#5 Gov Lombardo said that the cost of the stadium would be 25% less of the public financing of the proposal, the Tropicana a retractable roof park would be the third lowest financed park of the 14 MLB ballparks built this century.

A’s continue to lose skid reaches six; Mariners beat Oakland 6-1

Oakland Athletics’ Ryan Noda walks away after striking out against Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Bryce Miller during the first inning at the T Mobile in Seattle on Wed May 24, 2023 (AP News photo)

By Jerry Feitelberg

The Oakland A’s woes continued once again on Wednesday night. The Seattle Mariners (25-24) sent the beleaguered team down to the seventh consecutive loss by a score of 6-1. The A’s are now 10-41 for 2023. The A’s needs to play better. The starting rotation has an earned run average of 7.5 runs per game.

Teams can only win games with good pitching. A’s manager, to his credit, has his players giving 100%. There is no quit on the team, but the A’s do not have the talent to win. It’s a very sad situation. The A’s coaching staff hopes things will turn around. Oakland has yet to have a one-game losing streak this year. As the losses pile up, players must wonder when things will change. They may, but it appears hopeless at this point in the season.

The A’s played a bullpen game Wednesday night. Reliever Austin Pruitt started the first inning and allowed one hit. Lefty Ken Waldichuk was next as he was brought in to pitch to start the second inning. The A’s lefty gave up three hits to the M’s in the second inning and struck out the side in the third, but things went south in the bottom of the fourth.

The Mariners put five runs on the board. M’s catcher Cal Raleigh started the rally. Waldichuk struck out Teoscar Hernandez for the first out. Waldichuk walked Jose Caballero, sending Raleigh to second. A.J. Pollock singled to load the bases. Sam Haggerty, playing first base instead of the injured Ty France, doubled to drive in two. Pollock stopped at third. J.P. Crawford singled to drive in Pollock with the M’s third run.

Julio Rodriguez singled to make it 4-0. The bases remained loaded. Waldichuk walked Eugenio Suarez to force in the fifth run of the inning. A’s manager replaced Waldichuk with Lucas Erceg. The M’s sent eleven men to the plate in the fourth, leading 5-0.

The A’s put a run on the board in the top of the seventh. JJ Bleday led off the frame with a single. Ramon Laureano struck out. Jace Peterson singled, sending Bleday to second. Aledmys Diaz doubled down the left-field line to drive in Bleday with the A’s first run.

The Mariners’ Teoscar Hernandez, 0-for-11 in the series with the A’s, led off the bottom of the seventh with his ninth big fly of 2023. A’s reliever Sam Long settled down and retired the next three hitters to end the seventh. The Mariners now lead 6-1.

The Mariners bullpen kept the A’s scoreless in the eighth and ninth to secure the win for Seattle. The Mariners beat the A’s 6-1.

Game Notes- The A’s lost for the seventh time in a row and the ninth time in the last ten games. The hapless A’s now own baseball’s worst record, 10-41. The Mariners are now 25-24.

The line for Oakland was one run, seven hits, and no errors. Seattle’s line was six runs, 11 hits, and no errors.

Ken Waldichuk was the losing pitcher. He is now 1-4 with an astronomical 7.40 ERA. The Winning pitcher was Bryce Miller. Miller improved to 3-1.

The Mariners have beaten the a’s all six games played in 2023. The M’s are 29-8 in the last 37 games between the two teams.

The only stats of note for Oakland belonged to Esteury Ruiz. Ruiz leads Major League baseball in two categories. Ruiz has the most stolen base with 26 and has been hit with a pitch 11 times. Ruiz had his eight-game hitting streak snapped Wednesday night as he went 0-for-three.

The A’s wrap up the four-game series Thursday night in Seattle. Left J.P. Sears (0-3 ERA 4.99) will pitch for Oakland. Logan Gilbert (2-2 ERA 3.81) will be on the hill for Seattle. The game will start at 6:40m pm PT.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: Nevada Governor announces agreement to bring A’s to Vegas

Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo waves to the crowd shorty after he was inaugurated governor in Jan 2023. Lombardo announced on Wed May 24, 2023 that the State of Nevada and the Oakland A’s have reached an agreement to finance a 30,000 seat ballpark at the Tropicana Casino and Hotel on the Las Vegas Strip (Las Vegas Review Journal file photo)

By Amaury Pi Gonzalez

The Las Vegas Culinary Union has assured it’s working staff if the Oakland A’s and the State of Nevada will have union protected jobs at the Tropicana Casino and Resort. The Culinary Union is the strongest union in Vegas and they are assured union paying jobs as the Tropicana plans to build another tower across the street from the ballpark. The old tower will be torn down and the newer tower will be part of the square block with the A’s who will have their ballpark on nine acres of land.

Nevada governor Joe Lombardo announced on Wednesday a tentative agreement between the A’s and the State of Nevada a bill that will go forward to the Nevada Legislature that would bring Major League Baseball to Las Vegas. “The agreement follows month of negotiations between the state, the county, and the A’s and I believe it gives us a tremendous opportunity to continue building on the professional sports infrastructure of Southern Nevada.” said Lombardo.

The agreement will be drafted into legislation and later will be introduced to the Nevada State Legislature that will allow the public and lawmakers to debate over the project. Las Vegas A’s team president David Kaval said “We’re very appreciative of the support from the State of Nevada and Clark County leadership. We want to thank Governor Lombardo the Legislative leadership, the treasurer, and Clark County Commissioners and staff on the collaborative process. We look forward to advancing this legislation in a responsible way.”

M’s send A’s down to sixth loss in a row Seattle wins 3-2

BY Jerry Feitelberg

There was good and bad news for the Oakland A’s in Tuesday night’s game against the Seattle Mariners. The good news was that the A’s played better than Monday night. The bad news was they still lost.

The Mariners ruined a good start by the A’s starter, Luis Medina. The 24-year-old Dominican Republic Medina pitched well for four and 2/3rd innings. Luis allowed a single in the first inning and held the M’s hitless until there were two out in the fifth.

Another bit of good news was the two runs the A’s scored in the first inning. The bad news was they managed just two hits over the next eight innings. Seattle’s three runs in the fifth were enough to give them a 3-2 win over the A’s. The loss marks the worse MLB start since the 1932 Boston Red Sox.

The A’s put two runs on the board in the top of the first. Esteury Ruiz got the rally going with a single to left. The hit extended Ruiz’s hitting streak to eight games. Ruiz stole second to get into scoring position. For Ruiz, it was his Major League-leading 25th steal.

Ramon Laureano singled to shallow right. Ruiz scored, and Laureano went to second on the throw home. Jesus Aguilar grounded out 5-3, and Laureano went to third on the play. Catcher Carlos Perez singled to drive in Ramon with the A’s second run. The Mariners did not score in their half of the first. The A’s lead 2-0

The Mariners scored three times in the fifth. Luis Medina had not allowed a hit since the first inning. Medina retired the first two Mariner hitters in the fifth. With two out, catcher Tom Murphy doubled. The next hitter, left-handed hitter J.P. Crawford, took Medina deep.

Crawford’s home run was his second of the year. The ball went out of the park in right-center field. Medina now had to face Ty France. Median retired France the first two times he faced him. Not this time, as France homered to left-center field to give the Mariners a 3-2 advantage after five.

The Mariners’ starter Marco Gonzales settled down and allowed the A’s two hits before he left the game after the sixth inning. The Mariners’ outstanding bullpen set the A’s down in order in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings to secure the win.

Game Notes- with the loss, the A’s have lost six in a row and nine of the last ten played. The A’s are 10-40 for 2023. The Mariners evened their record at 24-24.

The line score for Oakland was two runs, five hits, and one error. The Line for Seattle was three runs, five hits, and no errors. Home runs by J.P. Crawford and Ty France were the big hits in the game.

Luis Medina was the losing pitcher. His record in 0-3. Marco Gonzales was the winning pitcher.
The A’s sent lefty Kyle Muller to Triple-A. Muller was the losing pitcher Monday night. Oakland activated pitcher Trevor May from the 10-day IL. May saw action in the eighth inning, and what an inning it was.

May hit Ty France on the wrist with a wayward fastball. May was barely moving due to the pain. He did get up and made his way to first base. Sam Haggerty replaced him. The next hitter Julio Rodriguez hit a ball down the right-field line.

As Ramon Laureano went to catch the ball in foul territory, it appeared a fan interfered with it. The first base umpire ruled the batter out. The M’s challenged the call, but the review upheld the call. May retired Jarred Kelenic for the second out.

He then hit Eugenio Suarez with a pitch. The Seattle fans were enraged at the events. May stayed in the game to get the third out.

There was more bad news for the Oakland fans. The Nevada Independent reports that the A’s and major Nevada state officials have reached a loose agreement for a public financing package including $180 million in transferable tax credits and $120 million in bonds issued by Clark County.

The A’s still have two games left to play with Seattle before returning home to face the Houston Astros Friday night. It will be a battle of left-handed pitchers. Ken Waldichuk (1-3 ERA 6.85) will pitch for Oakland, and Bryce Miller (2-1 ERA 1.42) will be on the hill for the Mariners. The game will start at 6:40 pm.

Oakland A’s commentary with Stephen Ruderman: Vegas residents express skepticism over $395 million tax credits for ballpark

Oakland A’s fan at the Oakland Coliseum on Fri Apr 28, 2023 thumbs down the idea of the A’s moving to Las Vegas (Las Vegas Review Journal file photo)

On the Oakland A’s Commentary with Steve:

On the Oakland A’s podcast:

#1 How practical is it for the Nevada tax payers to front the A’s some $200 million to 75 million to cover the existing gap to cover the $395 million to pay towards the $1.5 billion A’s new ballpark at the Tropicana site in Las Vegas. Some people interviewed in Las Vegas are against paying for a ball club that’s deliberately not trying to win and bringing them to Vegas.

#2 The A’s currently have a $59 million payroll while most of the other MLB clubs have a $100 million which keeps most of them somewhat competitive. If the A’s are in Vegas and fans are only showing up to see Shohei Ohtani or Aaron Judge will the A’s be able to sustain business as usual?

#3 The A’s manager Mark Kotsay said that losing is 100% his responsibility. That Kotsay beats himself up everyday about it and he doesn’t know how to hide it. It’s a constant struggle. It’s not going to change much at this point because A’s Money Ball genius Billy Beane and general manager David Forst are not going on the free agency market anytime soon.

#4 The A’s as it turned out could have pushed during their times of trying to move to San Jose that the San Francisco Giants no longer had territorial rights because those territorial rights that the A’s gave them so they could have moved to San Jose were used so they could try and build a stadium in the South Bay and once they had built their own stadium in the City they should no longer have those territorial rights anymore and the A’s should have had a chance at trying to get a ballpark in San Jose which they are being blocked by the Giants.

#5 Taxpayers in Las Vegas are skeptical about spending the $395 million of public money for the stadium tax credits towards the Tropicana Ballpark when they see how A’s owner John Fisher is not putting any money into trying to be competitive. Most likely Fisher and the A’s will be competitive after they get the new ballpark at Tropicana but on the face of it the taxpayers in Vegas are wondering if the A’s come will they continue compete with a low payroll.

#6 Do you see any outside chance that the A’s Tropicana deal could fail and Fisher would go back to Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao and try to iron out a deal at Howard Terminal?

#7 The NBC Bay Area Sports fired TV broadcaster Glen Kuiper for using the N word on a pre game broadcast during a series in Kansas City. Kuiper joined the A’s broadcast team in the early 90s. Some critics say you don’t use that word unless you use that word.

Oakland A’s podcast with Barbara Mason: A’s open up series with Mariners tonight after getting swept in Houston

Oakland Athletics’ Esteury Ruiz (1) reacts after initially being called out by second base umpire Brennan Miller, left, during the sixth inning against the Houston Astros at Minute Maid in Houston on Sun May 21, 2023 (AP News photo)

On the Oakland A’s podcast with Barbara Mason:

#1 Sunday afternoon the Oakland Athletics (10-38) played game three of their series with the Houston Astros (27-19) and couldn’t avoid getting swept by the Astros at Minute Maid Park 2-0.

#2 Saturday’s game was not decided until the eighth inning. Oakland played a very competitive game but just didn’t have enough to get past Houston in the Saturday contest and couldn’t get a run on Sunday getting shutout.

#3 There were some really encouraging moments in the Saturday game that started with pitcher JP Sears who was outstanding after digging out of a deep hole in the first inning. Another highlight were the two stolen bases from Esteury Ruiz who has been a standout this season.

#4 Sam Moll had relieved James Kaprielian in the sixth inning. Jordan Alvarez did score on a wild pitch from Moll and Houston had taken a 2-0 lead.

#5 The A’s open a four game series with the Seattle Mariners on Monday night at T Mobile Park in Seattle starting pitchers Kyle Muller will take the mound for Oakland with an 1-3 record 7.71 ERA. Luis Castillo will be on the hill for Seattle with a 2-2 record and a 3.31 ERA. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 PM.

SAN FRANCISCO–Ever since Major League Baseball, after destroying Curt Flood’s career, read the writing on the wall and acceded to Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale’s hold out demands in 1966 by accepting a byzantine version of free agency, “well travelled” has become a frequent adjective for any player with more than five years’ experience. (Of course, in the old days, players moved around a lot, only they had no control over where and when they’d be moved).

Miami’s starter for today, Jesús Luzardo, deserves that peripatetic epithet. Born in Peru, raised in Venezuela and south Florida, signed by the Washington Nationals, traded to the Athletics, and then dealt to Miami, the 25 year southpaw seems to be justifying the excitement he aroused when he first came to the San Francisco Bay Area in 2019.

His game time marks of 3-2, 3.16 are good, if not outstanding, but there is a detail of his recent outings for the gang from the Miami Bay Area. In four of his nine previous starts he had held his opponents to one run or less. His April 17 start against the Giants in Miami was one of the five in which he didn’t fare that well. He gave up three runs on five hits in 4-1/3 innings.

Like Luzardo, Alex Wood, the Giants’ starting pitcher, is left handed and has experience a few injuries along the way. Indeed, he was on the IL from April 19th to May 4th. He had gone 0-0, 476 since his return and was 0-0, 2.87 when he took the mound at 1:06 on a warm, sunny Bay to Breakers Sunday at Oracle Park.

It didn’t take long for the Marlins to jump ahead of the Giants in a game they eventually won, 7-5. Jorge Soler, the second man up for the Fish, drove a solo home run 436 feet, deep into the left field bleachers to get Miami off on the right fin in the first inning.

Nor did it take long for the Giants to catch up. Pat Bailey, in his fourth major league at bat, got his second hit and first homer and RBI with 423 no doubt about it blast over the left center field fence. It came off a 97.8mph four seamer.

It looked like we were playing two for the see saw. Wood got two quick outs in the third and then deflected a line drive off Jon Berti’s bat towards second, where it went for an infield single. Berti, to, went to second on a balk and scored when Soler lifted a double to the right field corner.

And in the bottom of the frame, Bryce Johnson defied The Curse of the Leadoff Double. His two bagger landed on the Konica Minolta sign on the base of left center field fence in front of the Giants’ bullpen. He went to third on Wilmer Flores’s productive ground out too. short and scored Estrada’s double down the left field line.

Davis trotted home on JD Davis’s eighth dinger of 2023, a 433 foot moon shot way over the top of the sign Johnson’s earlier hit had bounced against. The inning ended with the Giants holding a 4-2 lead that Nick Fortes narrowed to 4-3 with a two out four bagger to left in the top of the fourth. Yastrzemski’s beautiful diving catch of Garrett Hampson’s dying quail to right kept it there.

A one out single to right center by Edwards and an infield hjit by Bertio in the top of the fifth ended Wood’s working day. John Brebbia came on and gave up a single down the left field line to Soler that could have been a double but in any case drove in Edwards and moved Bert on to third.

Cooper popped up to third. Then Brebbia escaped from trouble with a doozy of a play. Soler tried to steal second, and Berti ran for home, resulting in this pickle: Bailey threw to Estrada, who threw back to Bailey, who threw to Schmitt, who threw to Brebbia, who threw to Crawford, who threw to Schmitt, who threw to Bailey, who tagged Berti out at third, 2-4–2-5-1-6-5-2. And so the top of the fifth ended with the score knotted at four. Ryan Walker relieved Brebbia to start the sixth.

Wood had lasted 4-1/3 innings and got a no decision. He allowed four runs, all earned but one posthumous, on six hits, two of them homers, and no walks. He struck out five and saw his ERA rose to 4.05. 50 of his 74 pitches were considered strikes.

You knew that tie couldn’t last. Davis led off the home sixth with a double to left, and Haniger drove him in with a tie breaking single to right that ended Luzardo’s mound tenure. Andrew Nardi relieved him.

He got Yastrzemski to foul out to third and then gave up a single to center to Schmitt that brought Haniger to the hot corner. Bailey dropped a sacrifice bunt that scored Haniger and moved Schmitt to second before Crawford drew a walk. Bryce Johnson’s nubber to the mound ended the episode with the Giants ahead, 6-4.

Luzardo gave up six runs, all earned and one posthumous, in five innings. He yielded six hits, two of the home runs and a walk, while striking out eight. He threw 92 pitches, 59 for strikes.

Matt Barnes got the Giants out 1-2-3 in the seventh and, after yielding a single to center to Haniger to open the eighth, gave way to Steven Okert. Haniger stole second, his first attempted steal of the year, on Okert and then scored a run charged to Barnes, when Schmitt singled to left. (He, too, stole second).

Ryan Walker pitched a scoreless sixth for San Francisco, and Jacob Junis repeated that feat in the seventh and set the Marlins down in order in the eighth.

Camilo Doval took the mound in the top of the ninth with a 7-4 lead and the bottom of the order coming to bat. Joey Wendle hit for Hampson and managed an infield single to short. Luis Affaez lined out to Estrada at second. Edwards took a called third strike.

Wendle, who had gone to second on defensive indifference, went to third on an swinging bunt single by Berti and scored on Bailey’s errant throw to first. Soler ended the game with a fly to right.

Duval got credit for the save, his 12th. Walker (1-0,0.00) was the winning pitcher, and Luzardo (3-3. 3.83) the loser.

The Giants now will fly to Minneapolis to take on the Twins tomorrow, Monday, evening there but 4:40 in the afternoon here. San Francisco hasn’t yet announced their starting pitcher, but the Twinkies will throw Bailey Ober (2-0, 1.78)
