Donskoi Scores Two, Sharks Ride Four-Goal 2nd Period to 4-1 Win Over Flames

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Sharks are still the last team looking for their first five-goal game of the season, but they now boast a four-goal period on the year. The Sharks (20-12-1) shelled the Calgary Flames 4-1 Tuesday night at the SAP Center for their eight win in 11 game after riding a four-goal second period. Joonas Donskoi scored a pair of goals to break a 23-game goal drought while Patrick Marleau scored his 490th career goal. Paul Martin also scored for the Sharks and Joe Pavelski and Joe Thornton, appearing in game number 1,400 for his career, each had a pair of assists.

“It was nice to be rewarded,” said Sharks head coach Peter DeBoer. “We’ve had a hard time scoring. It’s starting to come.”

After a lackluster first-period effort that saw the two teams combine for 17 shots, the Sharks opened the flood gates. San Jose peppered Calgary goaltender Chad Johnson, slipping four pucks past him on 13 shots.

“Scoring is about confidence,” said DeBoer. “You get one, they come in bunches. I think our entire game was turned around. We’ve been solid for a while offensively, we just haven’t been rewarded. Now we’re starting to get rewarded.”

Patrick Marleau opened the scoring by backhanding a rebound into an open net 5:35 into the period, his ninth goal of the season. With the goal, Marleau moved into 47th place all-time on the career goals list, lighting the lamp 490 times over his 19-year career.

Marleau’s goal was assisted by another Shark celebrating a milestone of longevity. Joe Thornton appear in his 1,400 NHL game Tuesday, picking up two assists in the process. He would also grab a helper on Paul Martin’s goal, a shot from the point that bounced around before beating Johnson for a 2-0 lead 9:18 into the period.

“We had a couple of guys in front,” said Martin. “I was just trying to get it here.”

The Sharks continued to roll, with the sure-fire Hall of Famers making way for the rookie phenom of 2015-16. Joonas Donskoi netted a pair of goals in a span of just under two minutes, his first goals since scoring in back-to-back games October 27th and 29th.

“I told him to shoot more,” said Martin. “He’s such a good player, it’s only a matter of time. He gets his opportunity and works hard. Sometimes you just have to put it on the net and good things happen.”

“That’s a common theme in our room,” said a chuckling DeBoer. “Not just Joonas.”

Since last lighting the lamp last, Donskoi fired 39 shots on goal. It took him a series of three to burst out of his slump. The winger worked his way into a breakaway, but found the Calgary defense collapsing around him in the slot. He took a shot wide of the cage that bounced out to the opposite post, allowing Tommy Wingels to pick up the puck and feed Donskoi for the tap-in goal with 5:37 left in the period. Wingels and Joe Pavelski picked up the assists, with Pavelski joining Thornton with two-assist performances.

“It felt great,” said Donskoi. “It’s been a long time since I scored. I didn’t even remember how good it feels.”

Donskoi was the recipient of a turnover by Mikael Backlund right in the slot, intercepting the clearing pass five feet in front of Johnson 1:56 after his first goal. Donskoi rifled his second goal of the game in make it 4-0 and give the Finnish winger his fourth goal of the season. Backlund originally stopped Chris Tierney’s pass attempt from behind the net.

Calgary would break up Martin Jones’ shutout bid 16 shots into the game with Sam Bennett beating the netminder 1:19 into the period for his eight goal of the year. It’d be the only offense the Flames (17-16-2) would muster for the night.

San Jose faces another Western Canadian foe when the visiting Edmonton Oilers head to town Friday night. They are led by sophomore sensation Connor McDavid, the league leader in points (40) and assists (28) while they continue to surprise. The Oilers sit just two points behind Division-leading San Jose.

San Jose Sharks podcast with Len Shapiro: Sharks road trip fairly successful; Sharks to honor Bay Area’s first NHL team

sportsk.com (Canada) photo: A CCM reproduced California Golden Seals sweater circa 1974-76; the Sharks will be giving out Seals T-shirts on Sat Jan 7th’s Sharks tribute to the Seals at SAP Center

It’s gong to be a festive night on January 7th at SAP Center when the San Jose Sharks pay tribute to the Bay Area’s first NHL team the California Golden Seals who played at the Oakland Arena from 1967-1976. Former Seals will be there Norm Ferguson, Bert Marshall, Gary Simmons, Gilles Meloche, and Dennis Maruk. The players will be joined by former Seals radio announcers Tim Ryan and Joe Starkey. The Sharks will handing out five card players sets to fans and you can bet they’ll be some fans who just might bring their old Topps Hockey cards to the rink of the players to be signed. Yours truly Len Shapiro who was the team’s media relations director will be on hand.

Sharks road trip: This last road trip was fairly successful the Sharks had three victories and one defeat the one on Sunday night was to the Chicago Blackhawks 4-1. The concern is still on the offense and they had the nine goals. It was alright but they had two games where they really came from behind and went into overtime to win games in Ottawa and Toronto. The game in Montreal last Friday if you listened to last week’s podcast it should have been a different game with Canadiens goalie Carey Price on his home ice.

It certainly was a different game at the Bell Center and they chased him out fast and created a lot of controversy in Montreal because Habs head coach Michel Therrien pulled Price out in the middle of the period and didn’t wait until the end of the period and in the Canadien lore that’s kind of an insult.

Sunday evening the San Jose  Sharks took on the Chicago Blackhawks looking to extend their winning streak to five in a row.  This game however will be a whole lot more challenging than the previous four games.  Both teams are in first place in their divisions and this game promised a tough defensive effort.

The first period was indeed a defensive game with neither team able to score a single goal.  The score was 0-0 as the teams headed to the locker room.  Who would break through in the second period?

The Sharks wasted no time in answering that question putting the first goal in the net at 1:13.  Joe Pavelski score his 11th goal of the season assisted by Brent Burns and Paul Martin for the 1-0 lead.  San Jose almost got through the second period keeping the Blackhawks scoreless.  It was at 16:49 when Chicago’s Duncan Keith scored his first goal of the season to tie up the game.  The period would end deadlocked at one.

The Blackhawks would take the lead for the first time in the game when at 6:59 Ryan Hartman scored an unassisted goal.  The Sharks had to take back control of this game.  Chicago clearly had all the momentum missing a couple of shots that very easily could have found the net.  At 17:40 the Blackhawks Vincent Hinostroza scored this third goal of the season to extend their lead to 3-1.  San Jose could never get back control of this game.    Patrick Kane would score on the empty net and the final was 4-1.  ‘We had our chances,  It was right there all night for us.  There was more than one goal our there for us,” said Joe Pavelski after the game It is easy to see why Chicago is the best in the west.  San Jose will now travel home to take on the Calgary Flames.  The puck drops at 7:30.

San Jose Sharks Friday game wrap: Power play comes up big for the Sharks in two goal win over Habs 4-2

Friday night the San Jose Sharks continued their road trip in Montreal looking for their fourth straight win.  The Sharks have looked sharp on the road their offense coming to life playing on par with their defense.  The San Jose goaltending has been off the charts with Martin Jones playing at a very high level as San Jose chalked up a win at the Bell Centre in Montreal 4-2 over the Canadiens.
The first period was about as perfect a period as one could ask for.  It was a total offensive domination by the Sharks with San Jose scoring not one but two power play goals.  The first one coming at 6:50 off the stick of David Schlemko for his first goal of the season.  Schlemko was assisted by Mikkel Boedker and Joonas Donskoi for the 1-0 lead.  At 9:00 Patrick Marleau scored a second power play goal assisted by Brent Burns and Joe Thornton to increase the lead to 2-0.  The Sharks were not finished with the Canadiens scoring at 13:19.  It was Timo Meier with his first goal of the season.  David Schlemko and Joonas Donskoi assisted on the goal for a 3-0 lead.  The fast start by the Sharks had the flat-footed Canadiens scrambling trying to find a way to fend off the assault.
The Sharks did not take their foot off the pedal scoring in the second period.  San Jose’s Melker Karlsson scored his third goal of the season assisted by Micheal Haley.  The Sharks led by 4-0 as the period came to an end.  It looked as if the Sharks had this game all wrapped up.
The third period brought an unexpected turn around for the Sharks.  The Canadiens brought some great energy into the period.  That energy translated into a goal for Montreal at 10:28 by Brian Flynn for his third goal of the season.  The crowd was all of a sudden into this game.  They were not disappointed when at 13:48 Jeff Petry scored his 5th goal of the season and the Canadiens had cut the Shark’s lead in half.  The surging energy could be felt throughout the building.  At 2:50 Montreal emptied their net.
The Montreal Canadians gave the Sharks all they could handle in the third period.  It was just too little too late.  They did skate an excellent period.  Once again Martin Jones was making tremendous saves over and over in the final two minutes.  He had 26 saves in the game.  “Our power play was sharp from the beginning.  We played really well.  We knew they would make a push in the third period,” said Martin Jones after the game. “I am getting to play a lot of games,” he said which is giving him a chance to create a great tempo.
The final was 4-2 handing the Sharks their fourth win in a row.
On Sunday the Sharks will take on a very touch Chicago Blackhawk team

San Jose Sharks Wednesday game wrap: Sharks win thriller against Ottawa in shoot out 4-3

AP photo:  San Jose Sharks Right Wing Melker Karlsson (68) and Ottawa Senators Defenceman Chris Wideman (6) slide into the boards during the NHL game between the Ottawa Senators and the San Jose Sharks on December 14, 2016 at the Canadian Tires Centre in Ottawa

By Barbara Mason
Super goalie San Jose’s Martin Jones started tonight as the team took on the Ottawa Senators looking to extend their winning streak to three.   Jones is second in the NHL in ice time and doesn’t seem to be suffering in any way from the work load. Currently in first place the team wants to start a little better than they have the past few games.  Defense is winning games for San Jose right now and they need their offense to start to contribute early.  Losing to the Senators earlier this season, San Jose was looking to repay Ottawa big-time.  A fast offensive start is what the Sharks were looking for in this game.
Prior to the start the Senators Chris Neil celebrated his 1000 games, a remarkable feat for any hockey athlete, a real mile-stone.
The Sharks opened the game with an interference penalty and successfully killed the power play.  Minutes later the Senators were called for interference giving San Jose a power play opportunity.  Seconds after the power play ended Joe Pavelski scored his 10th goal of the season assisted by Logan Couture and Joe Thornton to take the 1-0 lead.  Ottawa came right back to tie the game when Bobby Ryan scored his first goal since late October. The period would come to an end tied at one.  Ottawa had shot 21 to the Sharks 15 shots on goal
Mid-way through the second period Brent Burns assisted by Brenden Dillon scored his 13th goal of the season to take back the lead 2-1.  At 17:27 the Senators would tie the game back up off the stick of Kyle Turris scoring his 12th goal of the season.  This game had all the makings of a very physical third period.
A cheap shot by Ottawa’s Mike Hoffman on Logan Couture gave the Sharks a five minute power play.  Couture headed to the locker room for further evaluation.  When it looked like the Sharks had taken the lead, a review showed that Pavelski was offsides and the goal was waived off.  After killing the five minutes, the Senators took the lead for the first time in the game on a power play goal by Dion Phaneuf for the 3-2 lead.  One minute later Chris Tierney scored his  3rd goal of the season to tie the game and sent this game into overtime.
The overtime was a very fast and physical affair.  At 56 seconds left the Sharks had a power play but was  unable to score. This game would see a shoot-out.
In round 4 it was Kevin Labanc to the rescue finding the net and winning the game for two precious points.  While Labanc was the hero, I feel there were actually two heroes.  Goalie Martin Jones was 7 of 7 in the shoot out last night and this game.  He was perfect.  “It was exciting right to the end.  You have to be positive on the bench,” said Labanc after the game.  “We knew we had to buckle down and play hard,” he said playing in only his 17th game.
The Sharks will be back on the ice Friday taking on the Canadiens.  The puck drops at 4:30.

Sharks take bite out of Leafs

~ Logan Couture clinched the comeback for San Jose with its third unanswered goal in a 3-2 rally over the Toronto Maple Leafs Tuesday.

In the Sharks’ first shootout of the season, San Jose’s Joe Pavelski’s shot clanked off the crossbar during Round One. Couture scored in Round Two. If shootout goals counted, it would have been his second goal in as many games.

Sharks’ goalie Martin Jones three saves in the shootout included a save against Auston Matthews, who had scored against Jones earlier and had an assist.

Both Jones and goalie Frederik Andersen had their fill during overtime, which featured five shots between the teams. One of Jones’ saves was against a hard shot by Mitchell Marner and the Sharks’ Kevin Labanc also had a slight breakaway attempt.

Despite many chances on the power play, San Jose found themselves down in a 2-0 hole midway during the game. It started when Zach Hyman repositioned Matthews’ shot at 6:58 of the first.

The Sharks had six shots during their two power plays in the period, four during the first and even a shorthanded shot on goal.

They were hoping their luck would turn when a goal by Nazem Kadri morphed into a goaltender interference penalty 3:31 into the second period. San Jose ended up with two shots.

Then, things got worse. With two penalties 23 seconds apart, one goalie interference by Matt Nieto, Matthews scored at 7:46. Perched near the goalline, he took a pass by William Nylander at the top before scoring short side.

The Sharks had three shots during their fifth power play in the third period. With time winding down, Justin Braun broke through after a nice pass by Chris Tierney. With a defender in between him, Braun scored his first of the season from the slot at 12:43.

Just under three minutes later, San Jose took their sixth power play and it finally paid off. Pavelski won the faceoff, sending the puck to Patrick Marleau. Marleau found Brent Burns and Pavelski finished his shot with the famous tip-in flourish just four seconds into the power play to tie the game.

Game notes: The Sharks now have the third longest streak in the NHL with seven games won in a row at Toronto. Half of San Jose’s injuries was on the ice, with David Schlemko returning but Marc-Edouard Vlasic out. The Maple Leafs blocked 21 to the Sharks’ nine shots. San Jose gets right back it again Wednesday at 4pm in Ottawa for a rematch against the Senators.

AP file photo: San Jose Sharks Marc Edouard Vlasic waits for the face off against the Carolina Hurricane last Sat Dec 10th at SAP Center is currently day to day with an lower body injury

The San Jose Sharks are starting a road trip with the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday night at the Air Canada Centre and the Sharks who have lost their last two of three games are in need for the return of Marc Edouard-Vlasic is day to day with a lower body injury. Without him it would be an interesting four game trip back to the east coast. The Sharks are going to hit Toronto on Tuesday, Ottawa on Wednesday, Montreal on Friday and Chicago on Saturday. All challenging teams and considering some of the injuries the Sharks have could make this trip eventful.

San Jose Sharks Saturday game wrap: Sharks quell Hurricanes; Couture’s go ahead goal paces SJ in 4-3 win

AP photo: San Jose Sharks Logan Couture (39) gets a round of gloved fist bumps from the Sharks bench after scoring a go ahead goal in the second period goal against the Carolina Hurricanes at SAP Center on Saturday night

SAN JOSE–Saturday night the San Jose Sharks took on the Carolina Hurrricanes’ at SAP Center looking to get back on track after losing their last two outings.  Friday night San Jose lost a close one to the rival Anaheim Ducks 3-2.  They also lost to Ottawa on Wednesday 4-2 losing some ground in the Pacific division which cannot get any tighter.  Three points separate the top five teams in the division.  The Sharks are currently 2 points behind the first place Ducks. The Sharks won a nailbiter in a one goal victory 4-3 against the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night.
San Jose wasted no time in the opening period when at 0:12 Patrick Marleau scored his 7th goal of the season assisted by Justin Braun and Joe Thornton for the early 1-0 lead.  The Hurricanes would answer less than two minutes later.  At 1:59 Carolina’s Lee Stempniak would score a power play goal his 5th of the season. He was assisted by Jaccob Slavin and Teuvo Teravainen to tie up the game at 1-1.  At 3:14 the Sharks would take back the lead off the stick of Paul Martin for his first goal of the season.  The assists in that goal were Mikkel Boedker and Melker Karlsson giving San Jose a 2-1 lead that would hold through the first period.  Shots on goal were pretty even with Carolina having the edge with 11 shots to San Jose’s 10.  San Jose goalie Aaron Dell made some spectacular saves preserving the lead for the Sharks.
At 11:02 a San Jose power play backfired badly when a broken play allowed Carolina’s Joakim Nordstrom to break free for a short-handed goal to tie up the game 2-2.  That tie was short-lived when San Jose’s Logan Courture was assisted by Brent Burns and Joel Ward took back the lead at 12:18, 3-2.  This was Couture’s 11th goal of the season.  The Sharks were not finished scoring when minutes later at 14:10 Kevin Labanc shot his 4th goal.  Thornton and DeMelo assisted extending their lead to 4-2.  Even though the Hurricanes had shot 22 times to the Sharks 14 it was all San Jose with less than a minute left in the 2nd period.  San Jose had taken only 4 shots on goal in the period finding the net on two of them.
At 3:42 in the third period Carolina pulled to within one goal, on a power play, when Derek Ryan scored his fourth goal of the season.  He was assisted by Victor Rask and Jeff Skinner.  Looking at a 4-3 lead, San Jose had to dig deep to maintain control of this game.  It was a hard fought final period with the Sharks protecting their lead and winning the game.
The Sharks will have little time to enjoy the win as they head back out on the road to take on the Maple Leafs next Tuesday.  The puck drops at 4:30 PST.  They will also play the Senators, the Canadiens and the Blackhawks before heading back home for a date with the Flames on 12/20.
