Pac 12 podcast with Michael Wagaman:

#1 Jerry since last week’s Colorado Buffaloes announcement regarding leaving the Pac 12, Pac 12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff has not made any statements regarding the Buffaloes and also with additional departures from Washington and Oregon.

#2 Washington State Cougars team president Kirk Schulz and athletic director Pat Chun said that while it’s disappointing that up to five teams are leaving there is always a possible positive outcome that could unfold. They both are hopeful over the Pac 12’s deal proposal with Apple.

#3 Teams remaining after four teams that have left, Cal, Stanford, Oregon State and Washington State, Kliavkoff will have to do some quick work after this season in getting other schools to join the conference.

#4 In terms of how this works for the Cal the school you cover their alumnus and donors have to be concerned that they no longer will get to see the rival teams especially USC and UCLA.

#5 One interesting note is that Oregon and Washington will be entering the Big Ten on a reduced payout while USC and UCLA will get more than $60 million each for media rights. That’s the rewards of being in the second media market.

#6 Jerry you had a chance to cover two Stanford Cardinal appearances in the Rose Bowl how does this break up of the Pac 12 effect the Rose Bowl tradition.

On the Pac 12 with Troy Ewers:

#1 The break up of the Pac 12 continues after Oregon Ducks trustees voted on Friday to accept the move to the Big Ten. The Washington Huskies also will be leaving the Pac 12 to join the Big Ten.

#2 The Big Ten presidents voted happily to vote in Oregon and Washington for the 2024 season and they see a great benefit for their TV coverage having the Ducks and Huskies in the confrence.

#3 Last year the Big Ten got UCLA and USC in the fold and that was the beginning of the crumbling of the Pac 12.

#4 With the Colorado Buffaloes, USC, UCLA, Oregon, and Washington leaving the Pac 12 the conference. At this rate the Pac 12 could be down to just four schools, Cal, Stanford, Oregon State, and Washington State which pretty much would have to move them into other conferences.

#5 It was Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren who strongly urged Oregon and Washington to join the Big Ten. With UCLA and USC it gives the Big Ten a strong position for their TV contracts and recruiting for the schools.

#1 It was was Pac 12 Media Day Friday when Pac 12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff addressed the media and was not surprised about being asked the hot topic in the room regarding the departures of USC and UCLA after this season.

#2 Next up for curiosity what direction will the Pac 12 go after the two Southland schools leave will the Pac 12 got back to being the Pac 10 or will they disband and merge teams with other conferences?

#3 Kliavkoff said regarding getting the right deal for the Pac 12 is important and that he and the board are trying to get an answer expeditiously.

#4 Television plays a huge part in the future of the Pac 12 and Kliavkoff is trying to find an answer, he said that it’s been long term in the shift in the media market and short term that it has caused some hic ups.

#5 USC and UCLA leaving the Pac 12 voids a lot of the traditional match ups and Kliavkoff is taking that in consideration. The Pac 12 could end up going back to the Pac 10 and that would grow the College playoff format. If there is decision to merge teams to other conferences Kliavkoff will have to explore what that looks like.

#1 Wags, Cal Bears head coach Mark Madsen is really looking forward to his first season as head coach and the anticipation of his arrival has been nothing but positive.

#2 Madsen had a .579 winning percentage at Utah Valley and went to the post season before joining Cal. He had success in the post season and improved the Utah Valley program.

#3 Madsen was able to keep most of last Cal players and signed a top 10 class player.

#4 Michael, taking a look this coming fall analysts say that this Cal team could be .500 or better.

#5 Wags, talk about the Pac 12 losing the UCLA Bruins and USC Trojans. How will the loss of the Southern California teams impact the Pac 12?

#1 The Cal Bears introduced their starting quarterback for the 2024 season EJ Caminog who comes from Garfield High School in Seattle. Caminog became the first Cal committed player since Fernando Mendoza who was selected in 2022 when they didn’t land 2023 quarterback.

#2 Cal has selected running back Jamal Wiley is Cal’s seventh committed player in the 2024 class. Wiley is the fourth committed player from Texas to come Cal.

#3 Michael, your relationship with the coaching staff really plays a big role and going back to Cominog he had worked hard this summer and the Bears coaching staff got to like his work ethic and working with him on plays.

#4 Caminog said that he liked bonding with the coaching staff and that he also likes the education and connections at Cal what the University has to offer in academics and athletics.

#5 The coaches, head coach Justin Wilcox, offensive coordinator Jack Spavital, director of recruiting Cherrington, Terrance Brown, Benji Palu made Caminog feel at home adding that his family was grateful and excited about Caminog coming to Cal.

Cal Bears report: Cal hires Ken Moses as fourth assistant coach

BERKELEY–Cal Bears head coach Mark Madsen was proud to bring on newly hired assistant coach Ken Moses. Moses is the fourth assistant coach hired at Cal by Madsen. Like Madsen, Moses is a recent hire from Utah Valley. Moses and Madsen had worked together for just one season last season as Madsen and Moses were on a staff that helped the Wolverines win 28 games and helped the Wolves get into the NITs.

The Wolverines had an impressive regular season going 28-9, 15-3 conference, the Wolves also had an impressive home record losing only one game at 14-1 and were one of the best road teams at 12-5. The Wolverines during the 2022-23 season had an 11 game win streak and a five game win streak.

Coach Madsen upon coming to Cal is confident that he could get the recruits needed and in place for the 2023-24 season and get the Cal program turned around as opposed to this past season where the Bears had won only three games all season long under former Cal head coach Mark Fox.

Moses also was an assistant coach at Montana State under head coach Danny Sprinkle. Moses with Sprinkle coached the Bobcats into a tournament. Moses attended Colorado State University Pueblo in 2006 through 2010. Moses will be a huge factor in finding talent for this upcoming men’s season as he has experience as development and operations when he was at Southern Illinois.

On the NCAA Championship podcast with Michael:

#1 Michael after the UConn Huskies (31-8) defeated the San Diego State Aztecs (32-7) students and fans at the University of Connecticut rioted tearing down street signs, light poles, smashed windows, flipping cars over, setting fire to dumpsters and destroyed property following the NCAA Championship game.

#2 Michael, 15 people were arrested and 16 people were taken to the hospital in Storrs. A UConn spokeswoman Stephani Reitz said that a majority celebrating at the campus were mostly well behaved but that small group was big enough to do destructive property damage to the university which overshadowed Monday’s victory.

#3 Gampel Pavilion the Huskies home arena at UConn held a watch party that had 10,000 students in attendance who took to the campus and streets after the win and the campus was trashed. Work crews and contractors came in to clean up and patch up the damage. It was miraculous that no one was killed in this wild and out of control post game celebration.

#4 To the game talk about the Huskies high scorers who kept any chance of victory away from the Aztecs, Tristen Newton 19 points, Adama Sanogo 17 points, and and Jordan Hawkins 16 points.

#5 First lady Jill Biden suggested that the Iowa Hawkeyes should be invited to the White House too even though they lost to NCAA women’s champs the LSU Tigers. LSU’s Angel Reese tweeted with the link of the story writing “A JOKE” and three laughing on the floor emojis. Dr. Biden walked back here idea saying she didn’t mean any disrespect to LSU players regarding the idea of inviting Iowa to the White House.

NCAA Women’s Championship podcast with Michael Roberson:

DALLAS–LSU Tigers (34-2) Jasmine Carson will remember this NCAA Championship for quite sometime as she led with 22 points and was almost perfect from the field scoring 21 of those 22 points in the Tigers 102-85 victory over the Iowa Hawkeyes (31-7).

LSU demonstrated what a strong offensive team they are becoming the highest scoring team with their 102 points in NCAA Championship history. With LSU and Iowa combining for a total 187 point make this game the highest scoring game in NCAA Championship history.

Carson didn’t miss a shot in the first half converting all seven, hitting all four of her 3 pointers, LSU was unstoppable in the first half scoring 59 points in first 20 minutes of the game. It was pretty evident that LSU was in command and Iowa just couldn’t get a defensive game to stop the Tigers from their lopsided offense.
