Cal Bears game wrap: Cal Retains the Ax Beating Stanford 27-15

The 126th Big Game went to the California Bears (4-6) winning their third Big Game in a row. Some great Bears offense and some equally good defense tilted the game in favor of Cal. The final score was 27-15. This was Cal’s third big game win in a row.

Saturday afternoon the Bears headed to Stanford Stadium “the Farm” for the 126th “Big Game” against the Cardinal. Cal is coming off a 42-39 win over Washington State in thanks to their defense coming up big returning two fumbles for touchdowns and recording six sacks.

This was without doubt was their best effort of the season. This was Cal’s second straight win as they beat Washington State in their last game on Sat Nov 11. Cal picked up their fourth win in the last six Big Games and their fourth straight Big Game win. While Stanford does have home field advantage, the Bears are favored significantly.

The Bay Area weather had little impact on the game with light rain that was predicted over the course of the game. This was the last Big Game in the Pac 12. Cal has now retained the axe for the 2023 season their third straight season.

This is the biggest game for the two teams all season regardless of what their records show. The entire Bay Area was watching history being made in this colorful tradition.

Game recap: The Bears went on offense to start the opening quarter. Driving deep into Stanford territory Cal went on a fourth and two that failed. Both teams sparred through the first ten minutes of the quarter.

At 5:03 Bears quarterback Fernando Mendoza found Trond Grizzell for nine yards and the first touchdown of the game giving Cal the early 7-0 lead. With 0.22 seconds left in the first quarter Stanford kicker Joshua Karty hit a 44 yarder and after the first 15 minutes of play, the Bears had a 7-3 lead.

Early in the second quarter at 13:13 Mendoza again found Grizzell for a huge play of 54 yards and California had extended their lead to 14-3. Cal had scored twice through the air so far in the game so Stanford was having to defend not only the Cal passing game which had a great first half but also the rushing game. Stanford kicked a 53 yard Field Goal with 54 ticks left on the clock and the score at the half was 14-6 in favor of Cal.

Cal running back Jaydn Ott kicked it into high gear scoring a one yard run into the end zone at 5:45 in the third quarter giving the Bears a 21-6 lead. Ott had been relatively quiet in the first half but he came unleashed as the second half got underway.

Stanford did score twice in the third quarter but Cal retained the lead going into the final quarter. The Cardinal scored their first touchdown of the game at 4:25 going for the two point conversion which failed. They did score a field goal to end the third quarter, a 50 yard Karty kick. With one quarter left in the game California led 21-15.

The Bears would score one more time in the fourth quarter when Mendoza threw his third touchdown of the day an eight yard pass to Jeremiah Hunter to seal the win for Cal 27-15. The Bears had won their third Big Game in a row. The Ax would stay in Berkeley for another year.

Mendoza had a great day with three touchdowns throwing for 294 yards with one interception. Jaydn Ott despite a bit of a slow start in the first half finished in a flurry with 166 rushing yds.

Stanford struggled in this game with penalties and miscues and just could not handle the California defense. The long awaited game is now history and we will now look forward the 127th Big Game next year.

San Jose State Becomes Bowl Eligible After A 24-13 Victory Against San Diego State

San Jose, CA – In CEFCU Stadium, the San Jose State Spartans host the San Diego State Aztecs as SJSU looks to win their fifth game in a row. The Spartans look to become bowl eligible for the third time in the last four seasons and it could be the first time the Spartans have ever gone to three bowl games in four seasons and Coach Brent Brennan would be the first head coach in SJSU history to lead the Spartans to three bowl games. 

The first quarter starts with the Spartans having the ball and nothing comes after five plays, but the game plan is visible. Spread the ball around and play a balanced game for their final home game this season. San Diego State running back Jaylon Armstead carried the majority offense for the Aztecs opening drive, even supplying a 39 yard drive, but after surviving a fourth and 3 Armstead jammed the ball in from the 1 yard line and scored the first touchdown of the game, 7-0 San Diego State.

The second drive for the Spartans goes the whole rest of the first quarter, but it doesn’t come without a sense of anxiety when there was a fumble on a handoff that was recovered by the Spartans, but the quarter ends with the Aztecs up 7-0.

San Jose State starts the second from their red zone and Chevan Cordeiro hits Dominick Mazotti for a 10 yard pass in the end zone for a touchdown and the Spartans even the score up 7-7 to start the second quarter.

Cordeiro now has 17 touchdown passes after that last one and is now two away from tying Derek Carr for fourth all time in Mountain West history. On the next drive for the Spartans, Cordeiro kept the drive alive with a little brotherly shove, but the very next play Cordeiro throws an interception to Chris Johnson who returns it for 44 yards.

The Spartans defense was able to recover from the interception and kept the Aztecs outside the red zone and forced them to kick a field goal which they made and now were in the lead again 10-7. Cordeiro recovered from his interception by slinging the ball down the field his very next drive, going 5-7 for 49 yards, but it wasn’t enough the San Diego State defense forced the Spartans to kick a field goal and it was good to tie the game at halftime. 

The Aztecs started the third quarter and couldn’t convert on the fourth down after a 49 yard drive, Spartans’ ball and the chance to take the lead and change the momentum of this game. Cordeiro continued his great passing display with a pass to Isaac Jernagin for 42 yards.

This was followed up with a game changing moment from Quali Conley running for a 20 yard touchdown and after the successful extra point, the Spartans were up 17-10 with 6:16 left in the third quarter and the momentum in their favor.

The momentum didn’t stop for the Spartans as they were able to spoil the next drive for the Aztecs, but Bryun Parham racked up his first interception of the season and returned for 20 yards to give SJSU great field position and a chance to wedge a gap in this game.

The Spartans drive started out terribly though when a failed reverse resulted in a loss of 17 yards, putting the Spartans farther than they wanted to the drive. This disadvantage led to a three and out and forced the Spartans to punt, killing the hype they had after that big interception. The Aztecs ended the quarter with the ball, but not the greatest field position. 

The fourth quarter was majority SDSU gaining field position, but were able to get all the way to the red zone and a chance to tie it up. The rain came out of nowhere and started pouring as the Spartans defense stopped them and forced the Aztecs to hit a field goal, preventing a tie, 17-13.

When the Spartans got the ball the game was solidified when their running backs did what they do best. Conley got a huge run that was just supposed to run the clock down, but the Spartans weren’t done and Kairee Robinson on Senior Night scored on a rushing touchdown, setting a school record with 16 rushing touchdowns this season and his ninth consecutive game with a touchdown making it 24-13 San Jose State. The Aztecs had one more chance to make things happen and they pushed the ball down the field, but a pick by Tre Jenkins put the nail in the coffin. 

The game ended 24-13 with the Spartans getting the victory and punching their ticket for bowl eligibility. The Spartans still have a chance to get second place in the Mountain West and have a possible Mountain West Championship game ahead, but for now they celebrate this win. Next week the Spartans will face the leaders of the Mountain West, UNLV in Las Vegas for the final regular game of the season.

San Jose State Beats Norfolk State 77-53 Thanks To Trey Anderson’s Double Double

U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Thomas – Another game for the Paradise Jam tournament in University of Virgin Islands, it’s San Jose State against Norfolk State. Last game the Spartans had a great first half but abysmal second half. They hope to actually close out and finish the full game on top.

The first half started with an early 20-6 run from the Spartans and Coach Tim Miles felt even though that was a great start, his boys needed to close. “We didn’t close against Texas Tech, we didn’t close yesterday.”, Coach Miles said. The defense is stronger for SJSU than it was last game, but that couldn’t contain Norfolk State. Norfolk closes the gap with six at a point by crashing the boards, 18 rebounds, 12 of them on the defensive side of the ball. Coach Miles switched up his defense to a 1-3-1 and it changed the pace of Norfolk State’s offense and opened the gap back up for the Spartans with an 11-2 run in the last three minutes of the half. The score at the end of the half was 39-24 Spartans and the Spartans got good use of their prime time players Trey Anderson (11 points), Tibet Gorener (9 points), and Myron Amey Jr. (7 points). 

The second half was the close out that Coach Miles had been looking for for two games. The momentum continued for SJSU this half and it was brought together by great ball movement leading to scoring opportunities. It was a complete domination by the Spartans with not much to dissect. The Spartans win 77-53 with Trey Anderson messing around and getting a double double and we’re not talking In N Out Burger. Anderson’s 16 points and 10 rebounds, 4-7 from 3 point and MJ Amey Jr. with 15 points are the standouts this game and keys to this big tournament win. 

The next game for San Jose State is November 20th with the opponent unknown at the moment, but it’s the final game of the tournament for the Spartans before being back in San Jose for a game on November 27th against North Dakota State.

Cardinal Grounds Eagles 95-70, on a Rainy Friday Night on the Farm

STANFORD, Calif.– The Stanford Cardinal (3-1, 0-0 Pac-12) and Bay Area inclimate weather did not allow the Eastern Washington Eagles (0-4, 0-0 Big Sky) to soar inside or outside of Maples Pavilion, 95-70.

Stanford started the game off trying to respond to the12-point loss in their previous contest. They also were down two senior starters (Spencer Jones & Brandon Angel) at gametime (6 pm PDT). However, EWU wanted to get their first win period, no matter the locale or opponent.

The Eagles got off to a flying start and led most of the first half. They were in front by as much as 12 points and had an 8-0 run during that time frame. Eastern Washington was also hot from beyond the 3-point arc, shooting a sizzling 57% from Downtown/Suburbs. Their junior guard/forward Cedric Coward was really “en fuego,” as he was perfect (4-4) from Threeland and garnered 14 points by recess.

The Cardinal had to battle from behind for nearly 13 minutes before they finally gained the advantage on the scoreboard. Graduate transfer Jared Bynum nailed a jumper (7:14) to put them in front, 27-26. That was a pivotal juncture in the half and game.

Stanford went on a 17-0 run themselves and also led by as many as 12 points. This was also the margin at intermission, 47-35. Freshman guard Andrej Stojakovic led the Cardinal with 12 points, while Bynum offered 9 points, 5 assists and 3 rebounds.

The second half Stanford widened their margin to as large as 25 points. Which was also the distance of the final tally, 95-70.. The aforementioned Pivot Time was when the Cardinal took over the lead and game for good.

Famous basketball son/player Stojakovic, led the Cardinal and opposing players at the half, as well as at the end of the game in points (18), with a variety of scoring options. Michael Jones chipped in 15 points, while sophomore guard Benny Gealer scored 13 points. Jared Bynum (11 points, 9 assists & 5 rebounds) and James Keeth (8 points & 12 rebounds) were both either an assist or a basket from a double-double in the blowout victory.

With the great play of the two newcomers Bynum and Stojakovic, Stanford Head Coach Jerod Haase explained what type of high character player comes to the program, “We’re really trying to bring in the guys who fit in with Stanford.”

The Cardinal are next in action in Paradise (Paradise Island, Bahamas) as they will participate in the Battle4Atlantis tournament in the Atlantic Ocean locale. They are scheduled to take on the Arkansas Razorbacks Wednesday, November 22 at 7:30 pm EST, and possibly face either the Michigan Wolverines or Memphis Tigers on Friday, November 24 at TBD.

EWU heads back to Cheney, WA to host the Walla Walla Wolves Wednesday, November 22 at 6 pm PDT.

San Jose State Spartans Lose To Abilene Christian 77-71 After Wildcats Rally In Second Half

In the beautiful University of the Virgin Islands, the San Jose State Spartans avoid a rainy Bay Area on the beach competing in this Paradise Jam tournament against Abilene Christian. San Jose State this game needed to focus on three things if they were going to win and that’s ball control, hitting 3’s, and being quick, but not rushing.  They fell short to Abilene in a 77-71.

First half for the Spartans was them hitting on those key points. The flow of scoring came from a lot of shots being put on the board and the Spartans hit 56% from the field. The battle between the two point guards was a huge factor.

Alvaro Cardenas with seven points at half and three assists was able to direct traffic and MJ Amey Jr. with 12 points and four assists was able to create a gap in the score in a half that felt like it was within two points all half. 

The second half was the polar opposite of the first with SJSU only scoring 30 points in the second half. ACU closed the gap early on the half and with ten minutes left in the game even though San Jose State was able to tie it up, ACU got the lead right back with great post play.

San Jose State lost their flow in the second half especially with turnovers. The Spartans had seven turnovers, four of them in the second half, and ACU used it as an opening to take over the game. With 3:30 left in the Tibet Gorener hit a three that gave SJSU momentum in a back and forth final stretch and a two point lead.

The key stretch of this game was was the final 30 seconds, down two points, Gorener missed a three point shot (he was 3-9 from three this game) and after the review it was ruled a shot clock violation, because it didn’t hit the rim and that forced the Spartans to have to foul to save time, but the strategy was ineffective and ACU made each free throw ending the game with a score of 77-71 Albilene Christian wins in this game of the Paradise Jam tournament. 

Bad news, the Spartans lost a game they should’ve won, but let go. Good news is the team is by a beach, so it shouldn’t be hard to forget about this loss before the next game. That next game is in the Consolation bracket of this tournament November 18th against an unknown opponent at this moment, but the San Jose State Spartans have to figure out a way to close games when they can be so dominant in the first half.

Montana State able to fend off Jaylon Tyson and Cal in close game 63-60 at Haas Pavilion

The Bears were unable to capitalize on their big win Monday, as the Montana State Bobcats, led by Brandon Walker and his 26-point performance, came into Haas Pavilion to prevent Cal from getting a thrilling comeback win, as Montana State held on to win, 63-60.

Jalen Cone hit an early jumper to give Cal a 2-0 lead. Montana State came back to take a 4-2 lead, and a three ball by Fardaws Aimaq gave Cal the lead back at 5-4. A layup by Brandon Walker, who would just be getting started, put the Bobcats back ahead at 6-5, and they would hold the lead the rest of the night.

Montana State looked poised to pull away with the game early, as they opened their lead to 12-5, but Cal scored six unanswered points to close it to 12-11. Despite that, the Bobcats maintained a steady lead throughout the rest of the first period, never leading by more than six.

The Bobcats led 33-27 at the half, and they started to open up their lead again at the start of the second period, as a 9-3 run gave Montana State a 44-30 lead with 15:09 remaining.

Cal slowly chipped away into the latter half of the second period, but they got even closer, as a pair of free throws by Aimaq cut the deficit to 51-49 with 4:49 remaining.

There was a lot of scoring in the final few minutes. The Bobcats pulled out to a 57-51 lead with 3:19 remaining, but Jaylon Tyson, who shined for the Bears tonight with 27 points, led the charge for, and Cal came back to make it 63-60 with just 16 seconds remaining.

Following a foul by Cone, and a pair of missed free throws by Robert Ford for Montana State, Cone missed a three that would’ve tied the game with four seconds, and that would be it, as the Bobcats won it, 63-60.

Cone’s missed three-pointer highlighted a game in which the Bears made just three three-balls, down from 13 against Bakersfield Monday. Cone, who hit seven threes on Monday, hit just one tonight. Cone was 1-for-10 from beyond the arc, and scored just eight points.

Cal ends up going 2-2 on the opening homestand, and they will head to San Juan Capistrano for the SoCal Challenge starting Monday night, when they will take on the UTEP Miners for a very-late 9:30 tipoff.

Stanford Falls to Santa Clara 89-77

Tuesday night the Stanford Cardinal (2-1) took on the Santa Clara Broncos (3-0) in a battle of the unbeaten. Stanford led by slight margins for most of the game. They had led by as much as 12 points in the first half but it was the Broncos who pushed the pace eventually winning the game 89-77.

Tuesday night the Cardinal took on the Broncos at Maples Pavilion. Stanford is coming off a win Friday night against the (0-3) Sacramento Hornets 91-73. The Broncos are also coming off a win over St. Francis PA last Saturday 82-59.

In that game Carlos Marshall Jr. had the high score for Santa Clara with 25 points. Stanford kept an eye on Marshall. The Cardinal have a solid roster in Brandon Angel, Spencer Jones, Maxime Raynaud and Andre Stojakovic.

Stanford was highly favored. Angel had the high score in their last game against Sacramento finishing with 18 points with Jones, Raynaud and Stojakovic all scoring in double digits. Raynaud finished the game with seven rebounds. Both teams came into this game unbeaten. The Broncos came away with their record perfect and the Cardinal take their first loss.

Stanford hit the court starting this game with a shot from downtown from Stojakovic taking an early 3-0 lead. After taking a 28-16 lead at 12:08 the Cardinal let it all slip away and at 7:29 in the first half they were leading by a basket 30-28.

The Broncos took the lead once in the first half by a single point but Stanford hung onto the lead for the rest of the half. Santa Clara refused to go away threatening throughout the final seven minutes of play in the opening half. Stanford led at the half 46-44. Maxime Raynaud had the high for Stanford with 17 points.

The Broncos took the lead a couple of times in the second half but Stanford took the lead back every time but just could not establish a consistent rhythm and dictate the pace of this game. At 11:45 Santa Clara’s Adama Bal hit a shot from downtown and the Broncos went on to take a 62-57 lead.

This time it was the Broncos that threatened the pace of this game. This time it was Santa Clara that was holding small leads and extending their lead to 83-75 with less than a minute left in the game.

The Cardinal will next take on Eastern Wa again at Maples Friday night with tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 PM.

Jalen Cone carries Cal to strong bounceback win over CSU Bakersfield 83-63

Following a tough loss to the University of Pacific Tigers, Jalen Cone shined with 23 points and seven three-pointers, as the Cal Bears beat the California State University of Bakersfield Roadrunners comfortably by a final of 83-63.

It was a quiet Monday night at Haas Pavilion both in the crowd, and on the court, as it took two minutes for either team to score. Devin Askew hit a three ball two minutes and 13 seconds into the game, and Cal struck first. Jalen Cone also hit a three to make it 6-0, but the Roadrunners scored seven unanswered points to take a 7-6 lead.

Cal bounced back and took a 13-9 lead. Ugnius Jerusevicius hit a free throw, and then Higgins hit a three for the Roadrunners to tie it at 13-13 with 11:55 left.

The score was then 16-16, and after Cone hit another three with 10:09 left, the Bears went on a roll. Cal went on a 36-21 run to go into the half up 49-34.

The Roadrunners scored five unanswered points to start the second period as part of a 7-1 run as they cut the score to 50-41, but Cal responded swiftly, and put the game away.

In addition to Cone’s performance, all five of Cal’s starters scored double digits, as the team hit 13 threes as a whole. Fardaws Aimaq scored 14 points; Jaylon Tyson scored 13; Devin Askew scored 12; and Grant Newell scored 10. Each starter also hit at least one three, as Askew and Newell both hit two, and Aimaq and Tyson hit one.

As for Bakersfield, Kaleb Higgins led the way with 22 points, but Cal’s defense kept the rest of the Roadrunners at bay.

Cal is back over .500 at 2-1, and the opening homestand will continue on Thursday, as the Bears will welcome the Montana State Bobcats to Berkeley for an 8:00 tipoff.

San Jose State Spartans Lose To Texas Tech Red Raiders 56-42 After Second Half Turnovers

It’s the first road game for San Jose State and they face Texas Tech in the home of the Red Raiders. 

The 2-0 Spartans were prepared for the Red Raiders and focused on defense. Keeping Texas Tech and utilizing mismatches early. SJSU cut off the Red Raiders’ access to the paint and forced them to have to try to score from the outside.

On offense both teams weren’t hitting from the three point line, but the Spartans found a stride in the first half scoring in the paint. The game was close all first half, but Spartans Coach Tim Miles was adamant that his boys will win the battle in the key.

A battle Coach Miles wanted his team to win the most was on the boards, Adrame Diongue led the team with rebounds in the first, but the Red Raiders had 19 rebounds over the Spartans 17 rebounds and that battle shows why Coach Miles was so focused on it, because at halftime Texas Tech was up by one point, 22-21. 

The second half started with both teams trading leads. San Jose State’s ability to score on second chance points is phenomenal even though they only had six second chance points at the 11 minute mark in the second half. In the last five minutes Texas Tech had a six point lead and Spartans had to get back to what got them a lead in the first half, but turnovers were costing them and Texas Tech capitalized on the Spartans’ mistakes.

The Red Raiders went on a 13-2 run at one point and in the final minute Texas Tech was up 11 and let the clock run out, but not before hitting one last three to make it 56-42 and that was game. The Spartans main problem in this game was when they couldn’t get a run going, they tried to shoot threes and turned the ball over. The Red Raiders scored 19 points off of the Spartans 16 turnovers. 

It wasn’t easy, but Texas Tech pulled out and won making their record 2-0 and the Spartans go 2-1. San Jose State wanted this win, but they’ll get to forget about this loss in the U.S. Virgin Islands where they’ll be in the Paradise Jam tournament starting on November 17th. 

Martinez runs wild in Beavers’ 62-17 rout of Stanford

Damien Marttinez put on a show for Oregon State Saturday, rushing for 146 yards and a career-best four touchdowns for the No. 12 Beavers, as they trounced Stanford 62-17 at Corvallis, Ore.

Martinez was the Pac-12 freshman offensive player of the year in 2022. He passed the 1,000-yard rushing mark for the season, doing most of his damage in the first half as Oregon State (8-2 overall, 5-2 Pac-12) kept its conference championship game hopes alive while winning its ninth straight home game.

The Cardinal (3-7 overall, 2-6 Pac-12) had troubler keeping up with Oregon State’s high-powered attack as they trailed 34-10 at halftime.

Martinez set the tone, but there were others who had a big day for the Beavers. Quarterback DJ Ulagalelei completed 12 of 19 passes for 240 yards and two touchdowns, and Andrew Chatfield Jr. had two sacks, a forced fumble and an interception.

Martinez scored his first touchdown with 9:52 left in the first quarter. Four minutes later, Martinez ran in from 59 yards out. With 623 seconds to go in the quarter, Ashton Daniels put the Cardinal on the board with a 7-yard touchdown run, cutting OSU’s lead to 14-7.

A minute and 26 seconds into the second quarter, Martinez’s 15-yard touchdown run put the Beavers up 21-7, and OSU added another score two minutes later on a 40-yard scoring pass from Ulagalelei to Jermaine Terry II.

Stanford’s Joshua Karty kicked a 28-yard field goal with 3:04 left In the second quarter, cutting the OSU lead to 28-10. But Martinez scored his fourth touchdown, a five yard run with 15 seconds left in the half, to give the Beavers a 24-point lead at the intermission.

Oregon State proceeded to outscore the Cardinal 28-7 in the second half. With 1:30 left in the third quarter, Stanford scored one last time when Daniels threw a 75-yard touchdown pass to Elic Ayomanor.

Daniels completed 10 of 16 passes for 200 yards, one touchdown, an interception and he was sacked three times. Daniels was also the Cardinal’s leading ground gainer with 37 yards on nine carries. Ayomanor caught three passes for 122 yards.

Oregon State racked up 29 first downs and 598 yards in total offense.

Stanford returns home for the 126th renewal of the Big Game against California next Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
