The California Bears battled through two overtimes eventually losing to the Butler Bulldogs 97-90. The Bears fought through the first overtime but came up short only managing another tie. Going into the second overtime Cal couldn’t keep up with Butler. The Bulldogs won the second overtime 14-7 and the game 97-90.

The California Bears (3-6) took on the Butler Bulldogs (8-2) Saturday afternoon. The Bears are coming off a nice win over the Santa Clara Broncos last Saturday 84-69.

The first half of this game was a close one. California won the opening half 37-34 taking the lead into the locker room at halftime. Butler would respond in the second half winning it by the score of 39-36. As regulation expired this game was tied at 73. The game had been a battle from tipoff and would continue into the first overtime.

The first overtime of this game was a thriller with neither team able to capture much of a lead and this resulted in a second tie between the two teams. At 4:14 in the second overtime the two teams remained tied at 85. At 3:23 the Bulldogs began to make a move and they did not let down.

Butler took the lead and built on it for the remainder of the overtime eventually winning 97-90. This was a horrible disappointment for the Bears who had played so well throughout the entire game and the first overtime. The Bulldogs just wore them down in the second overtime.

Fardaws Aimaq had 24 points for California along with 16 rebounds followed by Jalen Cone who had a great game hitting 7 of his 17 3-point attempts. He finished with 23 points. Keonte Kennedy made a nice contribution with 20 points and Jaylon Tyson added 16 points. Cal had led by as much as 12 points in the first half but could not maintain the lead.

Posh Alexander had the high for the Bulldogs with 21 points followed closely by Jahmyl Tekfort with 20. The starting lineup for the Bulldogs had a great game but their bench pushed them over the top with 21 points to the Bears 5 points off the bench.

This was Butler’s fifth win in a row. They had shot at 52% to Cal’s 46%. The two teams were a percentage point apart on three’s; Butler with 42% and Cal with 41% in a game well-played by both teams.

Next Saturday the Cal Bears will play Mississippi in San Antonio. This will be a challenge for California taking on the 8-0 Ole Miss. Tipoff for the game is scheduled for 4:30 PM.

San Jose State Lose Three Straight After 83-78 OT Loss At North Dakota State

The San José State Spartans (5-5) are looking to end a two-game skid as they take on the North Dakota State Bison (5-4). The Spartans are coming off losses to Cal Poly and Montana. For the Spartans’ head coach Tim Miles, Monday’s game will be a return to Fargo where he served as the Bison head coach for six seasons, from 2001-2002 until 2006-2007.  It wasn’t quite the visit that coach Miles was expected as the Spartans dropped their third straight game 83-78.

In the first half it looked like San Jose State couldn’t hit a stride all half, Spartans starting the half shooting 29% from the field, but ended up hitting 41% by the end of the half. North Dakota State hit 57% from the three point line and that’s what kept them ahead.

NDSU’s Jacari White led the Bison with eight points at half and SJSU’s Rickey Mitchell Jr. also led his team with eight points. When the buzzer hit for halftime North Dakota State was up 36-28 and thanks to a 7-0 run in the last minute of the half is what closed the gap to within eight points.

The second half was a back and forth between both squads and it was also the first time the Spartans held a lead. The back and forth climaxed with the Bison having a two point lead with ten seconds left and the Spartans tying it up at 72 and we went to overtime.

Overtime started out with a back and forth ball game, but North Dakota ultimately took over at the wheel and separated themselves in the last minute win 83-78. The Spartans have now lost three straight games and head back to San Jose in a slump.

San Jose State’s next game is December 9th against New Orleans and it’s back in the Provident Credit Union Event Center where the Spartans look to shake off this losing streak and get back into their winning ways before the new year.

Cardinal Charged the Toreros,  88-64 inside the Maples Pavilion Ring

STANFORD, Calif. — The Stanford Cardinal (4-4, 0-0 Pac-12) attacked the guest San Diego Toreros (6-3, 0-0 WCC), and chased them all around the Farm, 88-64..

Senior forward Brandon Angel led the way for Stanford, with 25 points and 8 rebounds. He also got the party started with a three-pointer, demarking the first points of the game. The 3-0 lead was a precursor for the rest of the battle, as the Cardinal were in front from that point on to the final whistle.

Not only did Angel drill a three, but senior Michael Jones dropped one too. Stanford was on a 6-0 run with only two made shots; however, the Southern California bullfighters had their own response (4-0). That would be the closest margin (2) of the allotted 40-minute contest.

Stanford led by as much as 17 points during the remainder of the first half. By the time the recess bell rang, the Cardinal had a 16-point advantage over the Toreros, 43-27.

Angel had 15 points and 6 rebounds, while Michael Jones chipped in 11 more to help expand the lead. No players from San Diego scratched double-digits at intermission..

In the second half, the visitors tried to fight their way back with their swords and capes, but their efforts were proved to be futile, despite a 7-0 run late in the game. Stanford on the other hand hit a lead as significant as 26 points in the closing seconds. They settled for a 24-point victory, 88-64 instead.

Senior forward Spencer Jones got himself into the double-figure club in the second half (16) and snagged a few more rebounds (6). Angel added 10 more to his tally (25), while Michael Jones contributed an additional 8 to his total (19).

San Diego presented four players with at least 10 points to their boxscore. Junior guard Deuce Turner (12), senior Devin Dahlke and freshman Dragos Lungu both had 11, while junior Wayne McKinney III offered 10 points and 5 rebounds.

Stanford will next be in action at Maples Sunday, December 17, 2 PM PDT, hosting the Idaho Vandals. San Diego will be heading to Logan, UT to take on the Utah State Aggies, Wednesday, December 6 at 6 PM MST.

Santa Clara Broncos 69 (7-2)

California Golden Bears 84 (3-5)

By Stephen Ruderman

Jaylon Tyson and Jalen Cone led the way, as the Cal Bears returned home after going winless in the SoCal Showcase to defeat the Santa Clara Broncos, 84-69.

The Broncos came into tonight’s game at 7-1, so the Bears were going to have their hands full. The two teams traded baskets early on, but after a three-ball by Cone, his first of three-straight, gave Cal a 7-6 lead, the Bears would not look back.

Cal opened out to a 23-9 lead, as they mostly maintained a double-digit lead throughout the remainder of the first period. Cal went into the half up 45-31.

Cal continued to maintain that lead as the second period got underway, and got to their biggest lead of the night at 63-45, following a pair of free throws by Keonte Kenney with 11:13 to go.

However, the Broncos struck back with a 14-2 run, as they closed Cal’s lead to 65-59 with 7:37 to go. Tyson hit a three to make it 68-59, and from there the Bears got back on track, as they scored 14 unanswered points to open their lead back up to 79-59.

Tyson scored the first seven points of the drive, and he also got into a brief scuffle with Kosy Akametu of the Broncos, as both were hit with technical fouls. The fouls didn’t matter, however, as Tyson ended up getting his third double-double of the season as part of a 21-point performance.

The Broncos outscored the Bears 10-5 at the end, but it was far too late, as Cal ended up winning the game 84-69.

Tyson and Cone combined for nearly two-thirds of Cal’s scoring tonight. In addition to Tyson’s 21 points, Cone scored 26 points, as he was also 7-for-10 from beyond the arc.

With this win, Cal improves to 3-5 on the season, and they have also equaled their win total from last season just eight games into this season.

The Bears will have another week off, and they will then make the trip to Indianapolis, Indiana to take on the Butler Bulldogs for a 9:00 am tip next Saturday.

San Jose State Spartans Lose To Montana Grizzlies 75-58

The San José State Spartans are looking for their fourth win in five games when they take on Montana on Saturday afternoon. The Spartans were on a three-game winning streak prior to losing to Cal Poly in overtime on Wednesday night. Following the game, the Spartans will head to North Dakota State for the final contest of a three-game road trip.

The first half for the Spartans was a rare form for them this season where they were playing from behind. Going 9-25 from the field, it looked like nothing went right offensively for the Spartans and Montana took full advantage. Montana hauled 22 rebounds and went 48% from the field with Money Williams scoring 16 points in the first half for Montana. The half ended 36-24 Montana with the lead.

The second half was a bigger runaway for Montana as at one point in the half the Grizzlies were up 60-37. The Spartans tried to put their foot on the gas, but the potholes Montana set up early slowed San Jose State down. 52% from the field, but that didn’t matter as Montana forced nine turnovers and even though Montana only scored seven points off those turnovers, it was enough to halt any progress SJSU tried to create.

Even the guys that are usual scorers for the Spartans were quiet. Trey Anderson, Tibet Gorener, and MJ Amey Jr. combined for 10 points this game and even Alvaro Cardenas’s nine points was just a piece of floss in an avalanche. The final score ended up being 75-58 Montana.

Not the way the Spartans wanted to rebound after the last loss, but the result leaves them to fall to 5-4. The next game for San Jose State will be against North Dakota State in Fargo, North Dakota, Monday, December 4th.

San Jose State Spartans Lose In Overtime To Cal Poly Mustangs 81-77

Looking for their fourth win in a row, the San José men’s basketball team took on the Cal Poly Mustangs. The Spartans won their final two games at the 2023 U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam, against Norfolk State and Hampton, then returned home and defeated North Dakota State. The contest against Cal Poly was the first of three games on the road as the Spartans will play at Montana on Saturday and North Dakota State on Monday. The Spartans suffered the their first loss of this three game road trip 81-77.

The first half was all in the control of the Spartans with Trey Anderson leading the team in points with 10. 50% from the field and 50% from the three plus only three turnovers, the Spartans were feeling it on offense, but keeping Cal Poly from really catching a stride was a big key to maintaining a lead for SJSU. At the end of the half Spartans hold a lead 38-30.

The Spartans biggest problem this season is when they lose, it’s usually because they aren’t able to close it out. This seemed to be the case early on in the second half when Cal Poly was able to bring the game within two with 13 minutes left in the game.

Cal Poly eventually took the lead for the first time in the half at 47-46, but it was clear the Spartans had to lock in. Late into the half the Spartans started to run away with the lead and it was because Anderson, Tibet Gorener, and MJ Amey Jr. who all had double digit points, but in the last minute of the game Cal Poly found a way to push it and bring the game within three points.

In the last 13 seconds, Cal Poly made a point game, but a clutch two free throws by Amey Jr. made it a three point game. Cal Poly’s Kobe Sanders made a three to tie and when Alvaro Cardenas missed the game winning three, we went to overtime. 69-69.

Overtime it went back and forth between the teams, but with 18 seconds Cal Poly had a four point lead and SJSU missed three point opportunities, but settled for a two and were down two with three seconds left in OT. 79-77 Cal Poly and Kobe Sanders was at the free throw line. Sanders made both free throws and went back up by four and that was the end of the game, Cal Poly wins 81-77.

Unfortunate loss for SJSU on the road to close out November, but they stay on the road for their next game against Montana in Missoula, Montana on December 2nd and hope to start the month back in stride before they begin conference play games.

San Jose, CA – The SJSU Spartans are back in San Jose after the Paradise Jam and face off against North Dakota State in non conference action. Paradise didn’t seem like a fleeting thing as the Spartans defeated the Bisons 78-65.

The first half San Jose State was in the lead the whole time, but only by a small margin. Almost the whole Spartans lineup was on the board, but it was Trey Anderson with seven points, who led the team in scoring. North Dakota State’s main problem was going 2-11 from three which left them fighting from behind even though they were out-rebounding the Spartans. By the end of the first half SJSU was up 32-27.

The Spartans clicked on all cylinders in the second half and secured a victory the whole way through. Shooting 47.3% from the field and 45.8% from the three point line. Leading scorer Trey Anderson walked out with 21 points and MJ Amey Jr. locked in a double double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Scoring 78 points total the Spartans rolled North Dakota State by 13 points.

The 5-2 San Jose State Spartans are feeling good after this game, but with only one day to rest it off, SJSU faces Cal Poly Novemer 29th in San Luis Obispo and they want to continue to close out games for W’s.

On Stanford Cardinal podcast with Michael Roberson:

#1 The Notre Dame Fighting Irish (9-3) dominated the Stanford Cardinal (3-9) pretty much from beginning to end at Stanford Stadium for a crushing 56-23 win. The Cardinal struggled to hold back the Notre Dame offense in the second and third quarter.

#2 Fighting Irish quarterback Sam Hartman pretty much had his way with the Stanford defense throwing for 8-14 and 140 yards and two touchdowns.

#3 It was running back Audric Estime everytime he got the football he found daylight and lots of it scoring four touchdowns against a Stanford defense who tried to hold on but he was practically able to shake them off and scored four touchdowns.

#4 Stanford’s only double digit quarter was the first quarter when they scored 13 points but were shutdown shutdown the rest of the way scoring only a field goal in the second quarter and touchdown in the fourth quarter. Notre Dame just dominated on both sides of the football on Saturday night.

#5 Michael this concludes the Stanford football season where they lost their last six out of they’re last seven games to conclude the 2023 season for head coach Troy Taylor it was a season he hoped to get turned around but ended up well below .500 at 3-9.

Cardinal Unlucky Versus the Guest Fighting Irish, 56-23; ND Avenged ’22 Upset Loss and Regained Legends Trophy

Notre Dame Fighting Irish running back Audric Estime (7) scores one of his four touchdowns in the second half against the Stanford Cardinal at Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto on Sat Nov 25, 2023 (AP News photo)

STANFORD, Calif. — The Stanford Cardinal (3-9) ended their 2023 season with a 56-23 loss to rival Notre Dame Fighting Irish (9-3), on Senior Day on the Farm.

Stanford opened the contest with the initial possession, due to the benevolence of the opponents from Indiana.  Notre Dame won the coin toss, but deferred the ball to the home team, in which they had possession to begin the second half.

During the four minute drive, sophomore quarterback Justin Lamson broke a 49-yard keeper down the field.  Joshua Karty converted a 34-yard field goal to validate the first drive of the game. Stanford was on top 3-0 early in the contest.

When the Fighting Irish finally got their hands on the ball, they also tried to score on their initial drive.  Senior QB Sam Hartman also had a large gain on a keeper (25), but his trot ended with a fumble and turnover to Stanford.

Stanford did not do much with the stolen possession, and the Golden Domers were given another crack at changing the score.  Junior running back Audric Estime scampered for 25 yards into the end zone, giving the Irish the lead, 7-3.

The Cardinal was back on the attack, and sophomore starting quarterback, Ashton Daniels had a 53-yard pass to E.J. Smith, putting them deep into enemy territory.  Karty converted a 23-yard boot, bringing his squad within one, 7-6.

On the subsequent kickoff, Notre Dame proceeded to fumble the ball back to Stanford.  Less than a minute later, freshman wide receiver Tiger Bachmeier took a handoff and scurried 14 yards to pay dirt, propelling his team back in front by six, 13-7.   That score stood after 15 minutes of play.

Early in the second quarter the Irish fought their way down the field into scoring position.  That very thing happened when Hartman tossed a 14-yard touchdown pass to freshman wide receiver Jaden Greathouse.  Notre Dame back on top, 14-13.  Hartman’s attempt to put more points on the board resulted in his second turnover of the first half.  His pass attempt was picked off by safety Che Ojariikre.

Stanford quickly turned that into a Karty 56-yard field goal, putting the home team back in front by two, 16-14.  They held onto the advantage for a little more than five game time minutes.  However, the visitors from the Hoosier State had an answer for the Cardinal.

Estime was at it again, as he reached the scoring zone for the second time in the first half.  The Golden Domers went up by five, 21-16.  After a Daniels interception (Jack Kiser), the Irish were in position to add more points before intermission.  With seconds left in the half, sophomore running back Gi’ Bran Payne ran in for a three yard touchdown, giving midwesterners a double-digit lead at recess, 28-16.

The second half was set up perfectly by the road team, as their deferment gave them the ball to begin the second half, after being the last to score at the end of the first stanza.  They capitalized on the strategy fairly soon, when the frequent rusher, Estime, carried the ball to the house for the third time, and the margin widened to 19, Irish 35-16.

Later in the third quarter, Notre Dame scored an additional two touchdowns, by air, and by land.  Hartman hurled a 45-yard bomb touchdown to his freshman wide receiver Jordan Faison. (42-16)  Five minutes later, the ubiquitous Estime crossed the goal line (25) for an incredible fourth time, increasing the lead to 33, Notre Dame 49-16.  That daunting deficit for the Cardinal was also the score after the third quarter ended.

In the final quarter, the leprechauns were somewhat called off, for self preservation.  However, the special teams and defense apparently did not get the memo.

A little more than two minutes into the fourth, Karty was lined up for a 56-yard field goal attempt.  Mister Reliable had his kick blocked by the Domers, and senior defensive end Javonte Jean-Baptiste ran the ball back for 60-yard Block six touchdown.  That was the largest lead of the night (40), and the Fighting Irish were pretty confident they had avenged the previous loss and regained the Legends Trophy, 56-16.

With Cardinal pride, the home team did not want to lose by a 40 point margin, and attempted to alter the scoreboard.  Unfortunately on the next drive quarterback Ari Putu fumbled and turned over the ball during a quarterback keeper.  Notre Dame seemed not to be in any mood to add more points to their already impressive tally, and gave the ball back to Stanford.

Stanford gave the 30,901 fans something to cheer for, as Justin Lamson scored the final touchdown on a quarterback Keeper.  At that point, the deficit didn’t look as horrific, 56-23.  Being good sports, St Joseph County based Fighting Irish took the obligatory knee to end the game with the 33-point victory, 56-23, and possession of the Legends Trophy back to South Bend.

Stanford will next be in action next season as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), while Notre Dame will be in a significant Bowl game.

Note: Cardinal sophomore wide receiver, Elic Ayomanor eclipsed the K mark in receiving yards with his 58 in the game.

Irish’ junior running back Audric Estime found himself in the Notre Dame record books with his extraordinary performance on the farm: 238 rushing yards and four touchdowns.
