Aces win in Indianapolis, push their way to the top the WNBA standings

By Morris Phillips

INDIANAPOLIS — Aces’ head coach Bill Laimbeer might be losing sleep, fretting about his team’s slow starts, overall intensity and perimeter scoring, but at least tonight, he’ll experience his insomnia at the top of the WNBA standings.

The Aces pushed their win streak to four by outlasting the Indiana Fever, 74-71, on Wednesday afternoon at the Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The Fever were limited to ten, fourth quarter points, and A’ja Wilson made a pair of free throws with seven seconds remaining to give the Aces their final cushion. Las Vegas got the win despite trailing by five after three quarters, and shooting just 36.5 percent from the floor.

“We didn’t play well, but we got the win,” Laimbeer said. “That’s the sign of a good team.”

The Aces fell behind 8-0, failing to score in the game’s first four minutes, then with a slim, 53-50 lead late in the third quarter, they surrendered an 11-1 run to the Fever, in which they suffered their biggest deficit of the afternoon (61-54 with four seconds remaining). While Wilson and Cambage were effective scorers from the free throw line in, the Las Vegas perimeter trio of Kelsey Plum, Jackie Young and Sugar Rodgers combined to miss 14 of their 21 shots.

Those issues touched on all of Laimbeer’s reoccurring fears that threaten to prevent the Aces from morphing into a WNBA title contender, but on Wednesday, they didn’t prevent the club from snatching a victory.  In the final quarter, the defense stiffened, forcing the Fever to miss 13 of their final 17 shots. Rodgers came up with a big three to start the fourth, and Wilson and Cambage provided all the offense down the stretch.

The Fevers’ Candice Dupree had a chance to tie the game in the final 10 seconds, but missed the second of two free throws, and Wilson was fouled after grabbing the rebound. After sinking both free throws, Wilson and the Aces survived when Kelsey Mitchell’s jumper bounced off the rim with a second remaining.

“I thought the defense was solid enough, but we didn’t put ourselves in position to win the basketball game,” Indiana coach Pokey Chatman conceded.

Jake Schuman, a 4-year old from suburban Indianapolis, sang the national anthem, all part of a youthful, matinee crowd announced at 9,247 that may not have been basketball savvy, but was plenty loud. The Fever opened a three-game home stand hoping to capture their biggest win of the season, but came up three points short.

The Aces have won 8 of 10 after a 2-3 start, and in ascending to the top of the league standings, benefitted from the suspension of their home game against the Mystics, in which they trailed by double digits at the half. The remainder of that game has yet to be rescheduled, but in its absence, the Aces, at least for now, are on top.

“It’s been a really, long time since we’ve been in first place in anything,” Kayla McBride said. “But I feel like we’re really jelling as a team.”

The Aces won their third straight game with a 90-58 victory over the New York Liberty at Westchester County Center.

Kayla McBride led the Aces with 24 points while hitting five of seven from three-point range.   Liz Cambage added 21 with 11 rebounds.

The Aces held the Liberty to just 29.7% from the field as defense was their primary focus against New York.

“We talked about defensive intensity, something we have been lacking the last three games,” said head coach Bill Laimbeer.  “Tonight was defensive and that was the game plan.”

“We wanted to come out and set the tone on defense first, and let our offense take over,” said McBride.  “I thought we all did a great job across the board from the bench to the starters. We came in with the mindset that we are going to get stops on defense and win this game.”

With the win, the Aces improved to 9-5 on the season and moved into a 2nd place tie with the Connecticut Sun heading into Wednesday’s game in Indiana against the Fever.

Liz Cambage led the Aces with 12 points while A’ja Wilson had nine.

The game will be resumed at a later date.

The Aces won their fourth game in their last five with a 90-82 victory over the Chicago Sky at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.

“Grind out win. That’s what today was, was a grinded out game,” said head coach Bill Laimbeer. “Our defense was not there for two-thirds of the game but it happens that way sometimes. Our offense was able to carry the day.”

The Aces got balanced scoring with five players scoring 14 or more points led by Kayla McBride, A’ja Wilson and Liz Cambage with 16.

“That’s the big thing with our team, we have so many weapons on our offensive end. We can do it in so many different ways,” said McBride. “It comes from so many different places and that’s the dynamic of our team.”

The Aces shot 53.7% from the field and 5 for 7 from three point range.

“We score off of our defense and transitions, and we also just score off of the weapons we have on the offensive end,” said McBride. “I thought it was a great team effort.”

With the win, the Aces improved to 8-5 on the season heading into a third straight home game on Friday against the Washington Mystics at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.

The Aces trailed by as many as eight points, but rallied to force overtime and got 12 point from Liz Cambage in the extra time for a 102-97 win over the Indiana Fever at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.

“I thought we played a decent basketball game,” said head coach Bill Laimbeer.  “I thought Indiana played phenomenal. They came in with nothing to lose and raised up from all over the court and made shots and led most of the game. Give them a lot of credit for that.”

A’ja Wilson scored a career high 39 points, shooting 14 for 20 from the field while playing just over 40 minutes.

“I kind of get into this zone and this place where I can’t feel anything I just know that I have to score this basketball, I have to produce for my team,” said Wilson.

Cambage struggled throughout the night but stepped up big in overtime.

“I just played horribly tonight until overtime,” said Cambage.  “I just came out to play [in OT]. Maybe it’s pressure, I don’t know what it is, but I need to get it together and work it out.”

With the win, the Aces improved to 7-5 on the season heading into a game on Tuesday at noon against the Chicago Sky at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.

Aces take down defending champions, 60-56

The Aces proved that they could play with the best.

Las Vegas beat the 2018 WNBA champion Seattle Storm, 60-56 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.

But despite struggling in the first half, the Aces pulled out the win.

“I’m not happy one bit,” said head coach Bill Laimbeer. “I told the players at the halftime that I was embarrassed for our players and our team. I thought we had no life. An important game like this, a game that we needed to win, and we laid an egg in the first half. I was embarrassed. At the end of the game, we won the game but I’m disturbed because any adversity that comes our way we don’t respond to it.”

Liz Cambage led the Aces with 14 points and 13 rebounds, while A’ja Wilson added 12.

“We don’t know how to be consistent,” said Cambage. “That’s pretty much it right now. We gotta learn how to win and how to stick with it and come out aggressive.”

The Aces turned the ball over 17 times and shot just 31.4% from the field.

“All wins can’t be beautiful, I wish they could,” said Wilson. “We learned that we need to grind things out. Nothing is easy in this league and we have to attack every single game like it’s a playoff game, that’s where we got caught up a little bit. For us to win this game against the defending champions is definitely something that we should be proud of, but in situations like the way we played we shouldn’t be proud of that at all.”

With the win, the Aces improved to 6-4 on the season heading into a game in Los Angeles on Thursday against the Sparks.

Aces beat Cambage’s former team, 86-68

Liz Cambage had June, 22, 2019 circled in red on her calendar for over a month now.

Cambage helped the Aces beat her former team, the Dallas Wings, 86-68 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.

After the Aces acquired Cambage in May, she spoke openly about her struggles with her time with the Tulsa Shock, who later became the Dallas Wings.

“I was drafted to a team that I was open to not wanting to be a part of.  When I came to the league, I was looking to be nurtured, I wanted to grow and I wanted to be looked after and cared for, but I was thrown in the deep end and I was just another object,” said Cambage back in May.

But Cambage is in a better place now in Las Vegas.

Cambage scored 11 points and pulled down nine rebounds, while Dearica Hamby came off the bench and scored a career high 27 points.

“Most importantly, I am just glad we got the win,” said Hamby. “It was a team effort and every night I come out and play as hard as I can and give it everything I got, so I’m glad it was rewarded tonight.”

Forward A’ja Wilson scored 20 points going 9 for 12 from the field.

“This is the type of team that we need to be at all times,” said Wilson.  “We didn’t really show that against Washington, so we knew had to go back to the drawing board and get an understanding of where people need to be on time and just communicate out there. That’s what we did.”

With the win, the Aces improved to 5-4 on the season heading into a matchup against the Seattle Storm on Tuesday at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.

Aces fall at home against Washington, 95-72

The Aces’two-game winning streak came to an end in a 95-72 loss to the Washington Mystics at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.

A’ja Wilson led the Aces with 28 points while shooting 11 for 14 from the field.

Head coach Bill Laimbeer still understands that although he has a very talented team, they are also very inexperienced.

“What we saw tonight was an experienced basketball team kick the crap out of an inexperienced basketball team,” said Laimbeer. “I thought that Washington played very well. They understood this was a big game. They came into our building and just beat us up left and right.”

“They don’t make mistakes and don’t turn the ball over,” said Wilson of the Mystics.  “That’s the type of team that we can be and that’s what we need to be.  Of course they’re more experienced, of course they’ve been in these situations before, but at the end of the day that’s something that we need to buckle down.”

Liz Cambage score 14 and pulled down six rebounds.

“I have a very powerful energy,” said Cambage. “I try to use that to lift others up and get ready for the game, but right now I need to bring a bit more out of myself and the team at the moment.”

With the loss, the Aces fell to 4-4 on the season heading into a matchup against Cambage’s former team, the Dallas Wings, on Saturday at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.
