Dodgers crush Giants 9-1 to open three game series at Oracle

Los Angeles Dodgers’ Max Muncy (13) hits a three-run home run against the San Francisco Giants during the third inning at Oracle Park in San Francisco on Mon Apr 10, 2023 (AP News photo)

By Michael Duca and Morris Phillips

SAN FRANCISCO–The Los Angeles Dodgers Max Muncy had himself quite an evening against the San Francisco Giants at Oracle park slugging a grand slam and driving in three runs off Giants starter Logan Webb. This was Muncy’s first multiple hit game since Jul 1, 2021.

In that last multiple hit game against the Washington Nationals Muncy hit for a career high seven RBIs and did it even better three times last season on Jun 9th. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was considering resting Muncy for Tuesday’s game but he realizes anyone whose hitting three home runs you don’t want to rest him while he’s on a tear in which contributing to defeating the Giants 9-1.

The grand slam for Muncy was his career third and Roberts said it’s fun seeing a player do all those things to be successful at the plate on an evening like Monday night in an eight run slugfest, “It’s a lot of fun,” Roberts said. “Success in general is fun. But it does a little bit more for me when it’s here.”

Los Angeles pitcher Julio Urias picked up his third win against no loses, striking out eight Giant hitters, Urias walked two hitters and gave up four hits in the contest over six innings. The Dodgers backed Urias with nine runs including a huge five run rally in the top of the seventh inning.

Before Sunday’s game the Dodgers had homered at least once in the first nine games. The Dodgers weren’t able to hit a homer on Sunday in their 11-6 loss to the Atlanta Braves.

Wilmer Flores provided the Giants the only offense they’d see all night with a lead off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Urias had a 13 inning scoreless streak going before Flores’ home run. The last time Urias had given up any kind of scoring was on opening day when he gave up two runs and three hits. Urias is pitching his kind of game throwing shutout innings and he nearly did it again on Monday night against the Giants.

Dodgers-Giants gather again at Oracle Park the Dodgers will be going with Dustin May (0-1 ERA 0.69) facing the Giants Alex Wood 0-0 ERA 3.00 first pitch 6:45 pm PDT at Oracle Park in San Francisco.

The Low Point: Coming up short, injuries, Craw’s ejection symbolize the Giants’ squandered season in 5-4 loss to San Diego

By Morris Phillips

SAN FRANCISCO–Well, we now know when the next meaningful Giants-Padres game will be.

April 29 at Estadio Alfredo Harp Helú Béisbol in Mexico City. The remaining meetings between the clubs this season will be of diminished importance.

Adios Pelota.

The Giants suffered a third straight one-run loss to the Padres, 5-4 on Wednesday afternoon at a sparsely-populated Oracle Park. And if that weren’t burdensome enough, their season is unofficially done with a seventh straight loss to end August and a fall to fourth place in the NL West.

“Admirable effort, no quit,” manager Gabe Kapler said. “A lot of grind at the end no matter the situation. But the only thing that matters in this league is wins and losses and we weren’t able to get it done.”

That’s kind of the beginning of what’s wrong. The rest?

Have a seat.

Brandon Belt delayed his decision to opt for knee surgery until Thursday. The first baseman got a second opinion on his troublesome knee from Stanford Medicine that recommends surgery. The opinion alone likely ends his season, and starts speculation that his career with the Giants will end at the conclusion of the season. The 34-year old will be a free agent and he plans to speak to his agent regarding his options before deciding on the recommended surgery.

Austin Slater has a dislocated finger suffered in Tuesday’s loss. He couldn’t hit, but was available to pinch run, which he did, scoring a run in the eighth inning. Slater’s been a top performer offensively through the Giants’ last two months of losing, but it’s unlikely he plays much going forward or at all with the team wanting to audition other players in September.

Evan Longoria started Wednesday despite his sore hamstring. Joc Pederson and Brandon Crawford jawed with the umpires, who appeared to contribute to the Giants’ 14 strikeouts with questionable calls. Crawford was ejected after gesturing for calm and turning away from third base umpire Ryan Blakney and his emphatic heave-ho.

“You play below-par baseball for a really long period of time, tempers are going to flare,” Kapler said. “People are going to be pissed off. Stress levels are going to be high. Patience is going to be low.”

Then to conclude their afternoon, the hosts’ rally from a five-run deficit ended with an uneventful ninth inning while facing disposed closer Josh Hader. The former Brewers’ All-Star hasn’t tipped the scales with a 19.06 ERA in eight appearances since his trade. But he mowed down the Giants in the ninth, retiring Tommy La Stella, Luis Gonzalez and Austin Wynns after Thairo Estrada’s leadoff base hit to end it.

“Whether it was with Milwaukee or it was here, at the end of the day, it was something mechanically that I was going through. It was a little bump in the road that, ultimately, is making me into a better player, said Hader, who finally realized an opportunity to positively spin his struggles.

“We’ve got to get him going,” said Padres manager Bob Melvin. “This is a guy that we brought in for a reason.”

Headline Sports podcast with Bruce MacGowan: Wild card hopes for Giants lots of work in store; A’s get demolished in Houston and an NFL update

On Headline Sports with Bruce MacGowan:

#1 Bruce, the San Francisco Giants got some daylight after getting swept by the Dodgers in four games, then dropping two out of three to the San Diego Padres, then came back to San Francisco and won two out of three to the Pirates what are their odds to get in the wild card?

#2 The Oakland A’s were swept in three games in Houston by the Astros and they have fallen more so since their ace Frankie Montas left for New York.

#3 Turning to the NFL, the San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance according to head coach Kyle Shanahan was impressive in his breif start Friday night against the Green Bay Packers. Shanahan says Lance has provided lots of hope and expectations for the future.

#4 If the Cleveland Browns quarterback DeShaun Watson who was suspended for six games might face more time off as the NFL is pushing to suspend Watson for the entire season or for what the NFL is calling a season ban on Watson.

#5 If Watson does get suspended for the rest of the season do you see a chance for 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo going to Cleveland at quarterback?
