The Warriors win another blowout, send the Mavericks down to defeat 112-87

by Jerry Feitelberg

Dallas- The Golden State Warriors continue to roll as they overwhelmed the Dallas Mavericks 112-87 Tuesday night. The Warriors won their 28th road game and by doing so set an NBA record as they have won 28 or more road games in three consecutive seasons and no other team in NBA history has ever achieved that feat.

The Mavericks wanted to win this game. They were 8-4 in their last 12 games and were just 2 1/2 games behind Denver for the final playoff berth in the Western Conference. Former Warrior Harrison Barnes entered the game averaging 19.8 points per game. The ageless Dirk Nowitzki averages 14.4 and Steph Curry’s younger brother, Seth, who found a home in Dallas, averages 12.9 points per game.

The two teams played a very competitive first quarter. There were seven lead changes and two ties in the first 12 minutes of action. Dallas led by seven 27-20, but the Dubs stormed back and finished the quarter leading 30-28. The Warriors, as they have done so often this year, owned the second quarter. They outscored Dallas 34-20 to end the half with a 12-point advantage. Klay Thompson led the Dubs with 13. Ian Clark and Patrick McCaw each had ten. Steph Curry was ‘held’ to just seven. The Dubs again were superb on defense as they held Dallas to 20 points. Draymond Green put the clamps on his former teammate Harrison Barnes and held him to just two points in the half.

The Warriors were relentless in the third period. Klay Thompson and Steph Curry led the attack and outscored Dallas 29-21 to lead by twenty heading into the fourth quarter. The Mavericks were toast. They did not score a point in the first four minutes and 38 seconds of the fourth quarter. Steph Curry was on the bench. Klay Thompson and Ian Clark sparked the Dubs to a 26-point lead 97-73. At this point, Warriors’ coach Steve Kerr sent in the bench players to finish the game.

Game Notes and stats. The Warriors improved their record to 57-14 while Dallas falls to 30-40. Klay Thompson led the Dubs with 23. Steph had 17, McCaw ten, Clark 18. Draymond Green scored seven points with eight assists and seven rebounds.

Shaun Livingston, David West, Zaza Pachulia, Matt Barnes all scored six.Dirk Nowitzki led Dallas with 16. Yogi Ferrell had 12, Seth Curry ten, Nerlens Noel 14, and Harrison Barnes tallied just five.

The Warriors shot 55.1% from the floor and held Dallas to 35.9%. The Dubs made 13 3-pointers. They outrebounded Dallas 46-39 and had ten steals and two blocked shots. The Dubs recorded 34 assists, and it was the 43rd game this year that they have made 30 or more assists in a game.

Steph Curry remarked after the game that the win was an “all-around effort.” He talked about playing against his brother Seth and noted that “it’s amazing to see what he’s done in Dallas.” Steph also commented about some of the reports that the team was in a slump and that the wheels were about to come off the Warrior Express. Steph said this about the team: we ” never panic and never lose confidence.”

Steve Kerr, when asked about the play of rookie Patrick McCaw, had this to say: “Patrick was great- tremendous first half.” When questioned about the new NBA road record, Kerr said: ” it just means we’re a good team.”

The Warriors return home to face the Sacramento Kings Friday night at Oracle Arena at 7:30 pm. It will be the first game against the Kings since the trade of DeMarcus Cousins to New Orleans.

The Warriors wallop the Thunder 111-95, sweep the season series

by Jerry Feitelberg

Oklahoma City- The Oklahoma City Thunder came into Monday night’s game against the Warriors on a roll. The Thunder had won five in a row. OKC coach Billy Donovan has them playing better defense. They held their last five opponents to an average of just 99 points per game, and they improved their three-point shot defense holding teams to just 21 attempts per game. The Warrior, on the other hand, were also playing well. The Dubs had to deal with the loss of Kevin Durant and a brutal stretch of 8 games in 13 days and an 11,000-mile journey. The Dubs lost five of the eight games and looked tired. However, they won the last three games at home and looked like the Dubs of old. OKC, with MVP-Candidate Russell Westbrook, wanted to make Monday’s game a statement game. That did not happen as the Warriors routed the Thunder 111-95 to win their 4th in a row and their 7th straight against the Thunder.

The first quarter was fairly even. There were just a couple of lead changes in the first quarter. The Dubs took the lead for good after the refs charged the Thunder with goaltending. The Warriors led 15-14 at that point. They increased the lead to 25-20, but OKC made at bucket to end the quarter just 3 points behind 25-22. Steph Curry led the Warriors with 11, and Klay Thompson had 6.

The Dubs owned the second quarter. They outscored the Thunder 34-17 to end the first half with a 20-point lead. The Dubs excelled on defense as Draymond Green and Company held Westbrook to just 7 points in the half. None of the Thunder starters were in double figures. Klay finished the quarter with 18 and Steph was right behind with 17. The score after two quarters of play was 59-39. The players on both teams were, at this point, doing a lot of trash talking and the contest had become quite physical. Steph and the Thunder’s Semaj Christon got into a pushing and shoving contest. Tempers were high and Draymond and Westbrook got involved. The refs assessed two technical fouls on each team. Steph and Draymond received technicals for the Warriors and Christon, and Westbrook took the technicals for OKC. Draymond committed his 13th of the year, and Westbrook notched his 15th. The best shot of the night came when Steph hit a three as the buzzer sounded and he sprinted down the tunnel to the locker room with a lot of spring in his step.

The Warriors increased to 26 at the end of the third quarter. They outscored OKC 33-27, and the game was just about over. Steph hit a three again with just 0.4 seconds left on the clock in the quarter to ice the win. Steph did not play in the fourth period. Coach Steve Kerr started the quarter with Klay, David West, Ian Clark, Matt Barnes, and Shaun Livingston. The Thunder could not get back into the game, and with 6 minutes left, Kerr sent in the guys at the end of the bench to finish the game.

The Warriors, after a slow start, gets rolling in the second quarter, and blowout the Milwaukee Bucks

by Jerry Feitelberg

Oakland-The Golden State Warriors played the Milwaukee Bucks Saturday night at Oracle Arena. The Bucks entered the game as one of the hottest teams in the NBA. They had won 8 of the last nine games played and 12 of the last 16 to even their record at 34-34 and would be in the playoffs as the 8th seed if the playoffs were to start now. They led the Detroit Pistons by one game for the final berth in the Eastern Conference. The Dubs, coming off a blowout win over Orlando Thursday night, wanted to get off to a good start as they did Thursday. The Bucks, however, had other thoughts as they raced out to a 27-14 lead about 2/3rds of the way through the first quarter. They were moving the ball well and were able to get easy baskets. The Dubs started to play defense with Draymond Green Andre Iguodala, and JaVale McGee leading the way. The Dubs went on a 13-2 run to end the quarter trailing by just two points 29-27. Steph Curry made a deuce and a trey to finish the quarter.

The Dubs started the second quarter on a 7-0 run to take the lead for the first time in the game. The Warriors outscored the Bucks 36-15 to lead by 19 63-44 at the end of the first half. Steph Curry made four 3-point shots as the Dubs got back on track. Steph led the team with 18 points. Klay Thompson had 9, JaVale McGee 8, Draymond shut down the Bucks big Man, Giannis Antetokounpo, holding him to just 5 points in the half. Greg Monroe had ten off the bench for Milwaukee.
The Warriors continued to play well and refused to allow the Bucks to get back in the game. They outscored Milwaukee 31-26 behind the stellar play of Andre Iguodala and Steph Curry. Curry. The Dubs led 94-70 and Steph was done for the night. Klay Thompson scored 12 points in the second half, and the Warriors coasted to victory by a score of 117-92.
Game Notes and Stats- The Warriors started to roll late in the first quarter. They stayed hot the rest of the way. They attempted 75 shots and made 45 which was 60% from the floor. They made 12 3s. They held Milwaukee to just 40.4% from the floor. The Bucks made just 36 shots in 89 tries. The Dubs outrebounded them 44-35. The Warriors recorded 30 assists for the 42nd time this year that they made 30 or more assists in a game. They had five steals, six blocked shots and played great on defense. They scored 24 fast break points and outscored the Bucks 56-40 in the paint. The Dubs bench recorded 47 points that must have pleased the coaching staff.
Steph led the Dubs with 28. Klay had 21. Andre Iguodala 15, Draymond 8 points, ten assists, and eight boards. JaVale McGee had 8, Ian Clark 9 and Matt Barnes 7.
Malcolm Bogdon led the Bucks with 18. Tony Snell 12, Khris Middleton, 11, and Greg Monroe 12. Matthew Delavedove, the former Cleveland Cavalier, and Steph Curry stalker was booed every time he touched the ball. Delavedova finished the night with just 5 points. Antetokounmpo, who is averaging over 21 points a game, was held to just 9.
Head coach Steve Kerr said that Milwaukee ” is an athletic, long (team) that really bothered us the first 5 minutes of the game.” He said that (JaVale) McGee really gave us a lift.” We “closed the first quarter well and turned the tide in the second.”
The Warriors improve to 55-14 and now lead the San Antonio Spurs by 2 1/2 games. The Spurs lost to the Memphis Grizzlies Saturday night. and are 52-16
The Warriors hit the road as they head to Oklahoma City to face the Thunder on Monday. Game time will be at 5 pm. They then go to Dallas to face the Mavericks Tuesday night. Game time will be at 5 pm, too.

The Warriors return to form, blow out the Orlando Magic by thirty points

by Jerry Feitelberg

Oakland- The Golden State Warriors played like the Warriors prior to the injury of Kevin Durant as they rolled over the Orlando Magic 122-92. The Warriors, in the first quarter, played well on both ends of the court. Klay Thompson led the offense with 21 points in the first 8 1/2 minutes of the game and the Dubs defense held the Magic to just 20 points as they raced to a 14-point lead 34-20 after the first 12 minutes of play. The Warriors and fans held their collective breaths as Steph Curry left the game when he stepped on Evan Fournier’s foot and came up limping. Steph went to the locker room for treatment and was able to return to action.

Steph started the second quarter with the second unit. The Dubs were leading 58-33 but they started to play sloppy and the Magic was able to cut the deficit to 67-50 at the end of the first half. Klay Thompson led the Dubs with 27. Steph had 9, Draymond,5, Zaza 6. Elfrid Payton and Evan Fournier each had 9 to lead the Magic scorers.

The Warriors iced the game in the third period. They scored 36 points and held the Magic to just 21 and led 103-71 heading into the fourth quarter. Steph and Andre Iguodala played extremely well in the period as the Warriors were able to put the game out of reach. Head coach Steve Kerr removed the regulars after just a few minutes of play and the reserves finished the game. Final score 122-92.

Game notes and stats. The Warriors had five players in double figures. Klay Thompson finished the night with 27. Steph had 25 points and 9 assists. Iguodala knocked down 14 points and he had 6 rebounds. Draymond Green scored 9 and he had 6 assists and 11 boards. Zaza Pachulia had a double-double:10 points and 10 rebounds. Ian Clark added 12.

Elfrid Payton and Jeff Green led the Magic with 13 points each. Evan Fournier had 12 and big Nikola Vusevich scored 10.

After the game, Steve Kerr was asked about the great start the team had in the game and he said this:”that was the focus. Let’s carry over our defensive effort and get off to a good start.” “tonight we broke through with a great offense. (It) always starts with great defense. He had this to say about Andre Iguodala’s performance”we get a different dimension when Andre plays this way.He is just playing great basketball.”

One humorous note- Zaza Pachulia and one of the trainers had a bet. The bet was this; Zaza would have to make a dunk, which he did. Zaza would have to have a double-double with points and rebounds, which he did. What did the trainer lose? The trainer has to shave his beard and Zaza was seen on the bench making gestures as if he were using a pair of scissors.

The Warriors improved to 54-14 and Orlando drops to 24-45.  The Warriors face a young and talented Milwaukee Bucks team Saturday night at Oracle Arena at 7:30 pm.

Golden State Warriors podcast with David Zizmor: Durant absence impact has hampered W’s to measure up with other teams

One of the things we realize through this Kevin Durant injury is the Golden State Warriors bench is thin. Last year they had players like Leandro Barbosa or Marreese Speights those guys are great but the Warriors wanted a veteran presence and head coach Steve Kerr trusted they could come in and make things work and even with a guy like Andrew Bogot they had slightly more experience on the bench. It’s not quite the case especially in the front court where Durant played where they were counting on really young guys.

The bench: Patrick McCaw plays in the two and three, Kevon Looney he’s shown flashes but he hasn’t been consistent they just don’t have a ton of depth up front and some of the things like we said Durant he’s a singular talent you just can’t lose a guy like that and expect things to go smoothly. He’s an amazing basketball player whose having a great season and you talk with guys whose in the running with him for MVP certainly for first team All NBA on both ends of the floor on offense and defense nobody can compare with him.

The Warriors get back on the winning track as they defeat the Philadelphia 76ers in a thriller 106-104

By Jerry Feitelberg

Oakland- The Golden state Warriors, behind the stellar play of Draymond Green, rallied from a 16-point deficit late in the third quarter to defeat the Sixers 106-104. The game was a thriller from start to finish. The Warriors won the first quarter 35-34 but trailed by one-point at the end of the first half 59-58. Klay Thompson led the Dubs with 19 and Steph Curry added 14. The lead changed hands several times in the half and the Sixers were able to score points in the paint easily. The Dubs made 7 three-pointers and made 17 free throws to keep the game close as the shot just 39% from the floor. The Sixers, on the other hand, shot 47% from the floor and made 7 more field goals than the Dubs.

In the third quarter, one that is usually owned by Golden State, saw the wheels come off the Dubs’ express. The Sixers held the Dubs scoreless for over 3 1/2 minutes and led 84-69 late in the quarter. The Dubs rallied and closed the game to minus 12 after 3 periods of play trailing 90-78. The Sixers were playing with a lot of confidence heading into the final 12 minutes of play. The Warriors, especially Draymond Green and Steph Curry, had other thoughts. The Dubs went on a 15-1 run to take a one-point lead 92-91. The Sixers pushed back and regained the lead 96-95. Steph hit a three to propel the Dubs ahead 98-96 but Philly knocked down a three and led 99-98. That would be the last time the Sixers would be ahead. Steph made another three and Matt Barnes hit a three from the right corner to increase the lead to five 104-99. The Sixers closed the deficit to one but Draymond made two big free throws. Matt Barnes had a chance to ice the game but he missed a dunk after the Dubs intercepted an inbound pass. Draymond Green made a smart play as he intentionally fouled Dario Saric with just 2.6 seconds left. Saric made the first free throw. He missed the second hoping to get a rebound out to a teammate but the Ball ended up in Steph’s hands as the Dubs held on to win 106-104.

Game Notes and Stats- The star of the game, without question, was Draymond Green. He was a force on defense as he had 8 rebounds, 4 steals, and a career-high 6 blocks in the game. He scored 20 points and had 8 assists as he literally willed his team to victory. Earlier in the game, Draymond told his teammates that “you have to dig your way out.” Steve Kerr remarked that “everybody stepped it up” on defense. He also said that with “more defensive pressure, there are more made shots” on offense. He also said that the win will give the Dubs “more momentum.”  The Warriors outscored the Sixers 28-14 in the fourth quarter. The Warriors snapped a 3-game losing streak and improved to 53-14. Steph found his game in the fourth quarter and ended up with 29 points. He made 5 3-point shots in 13 tries. Klay Thompson added 28. Matt Barnes led the bench with 10 and Andre Iguodala added 7. Leading scorers for the Sixers were Dario Saric, who is a candidate for Rooke of the Year, knocked down 25. Jhalil Okafor had 22,  Richaun Holmes,14 and Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot 10.The Sixers fall to 24-43.

The Dubs meet the Orlando Magic Thursday night at Oracle Arena. Game time will be at 7:30 pm.

The Spurs bench outplays the Warrior bench as the Dubs lose for the fifth time in their last seven games

San Antonio- The Golden State Warriors finished a very long stretch of eight games in 13 days when they played the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday night in Texas. The Dubs traveled 13,000 miles to play in the East, Midwest, West Coast, and back to the Midwest. Head coach Steve Kerr decided to rest Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, and Andre Iguodala. The move was planned even though the Dubs knew that the game in San Antonio was going to be big. However, Kerr decided to take the long view and did not want his players worn out before the playoffs started. Kevin Durant is still sidelined and the Dubs are hoping that KD  would return in three weeks from his injury.  The Spurs were missing stars too. Kawhi Leonard was sidelined with a concussion. Tony Parker and Dejounte Murray did not play due to injury and LaMarcus Aldridge was ruled out indefinitely with a minor heart arrhythmia.

The only regular in the starting lineup for the Warriors was Zaza Pachulia. Matt Barnes and Kevon Looney started at forward and the guards were Shaun Livingston and Patrick McCaw. The Spurs countered with Patty Mills and Kyle Anderson at the guard position. Former Warrior David Lee and Danny Green were paired at forward and DeWayne Dedmon started at center.

The Spurs had no trouble piercing the Warriors’ defense. They made several three -point shots and were able to lead 53-37 midway through the second quarter. Steve Kerr said this after the game:”I was disappointed in the defense in the first half.” The Spurs led the rest of the way and sent the Dubs down to defeat 107-85.

The one bright spot for the Warriors was the play of Ian Clark. Clark scored a career-high 36 points coming off the bench. Patrick McCaw, on the other hand, had a terrible night as he went 0-for-12 and scored just two points in the game. Kerr remarked that all players will have a night like McCaw’s at some point in their career but McCaw is a very good player in a league full of great players.

Game Notes and stats- Matt Barnes had 14 points and nine boards. Pachulia recorded a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. No one else scored more than 8 points in the game for the Warriors. The Spurs had five players in double figures including Pau Gasol with ten, Kyle Anderson 13, and rookie Davis Bertans, who was just called up from the D-League on March 6th, knocked down 13.

The Dubs played Minnesota Friday night and then arrived in San Antonio at 3 am Saturday morning. There is no doubt that the club was tired and their play showed it Saturday night. However, newcomer Matt Barnes put things into perspective this way:”it’s more about May and June than March.” The Dubs’ are now 52-14 and have 16 games left on the schedule. They still have a half game lead over the Spurs but if the teams are tied at the end of the season, the tie-breaker will go to San Antonio and they will have home-court advantage throughout the playoffs.

The Dubs are off until next Tuesday. They play the Philadelphia 76ers at Oracle Arena. Game time will be at 7:30 pm.

The Warriors woes continue, fourth quarter rally falls short. Dubs lose to the Timberwolves

Minneapolis- The Warriors fell behind early in the first quarter and trailed by 13 after 3 periods of play. They outscored the Minnesota Timberwolves 26-15 in the fourth quarter but lost103-102 as Steph Curry missed a shot with just a few seconds left in the game.

The Warriors have lost 4 of the seven games played since the injury to Kevin Durant. Their record is now 52-13. They play the San Antonio Spurs Saturday night in San Antonio. The Spurs are 50-14, and if they win, they will have the best record in the NB and win own the tie-breaker if the teams finish with the same record at the end of the season. The Spurs’ Kahwi Leonard will not play as he sustained a head injury in the game against the Sacramento Kings Thursday night.

Klay Thompson led the Dubs with 30 points. Curry followed with 26, but his slump in shooting from 3-point range continued as he made just one three-pointer in 8 attempts. The Timberwolves, coached by Tom Thibideau, have improved dramatically on defense and they have won six of their last eight games.  Andrew Wiggins scored 20 of his 24 points in the second half and made two free throws with just 12.8 seconds left to seal the win. Karl-Anthony Towns scored 23 and point guard Ricky Rubio added 17 and had 13 assists. The T-Wolves trail Denver by 2 1/2 games for the last playoff spot in the Western Conference.

The Dubs face the Spurs Saturday night. Head coach Steve Kerr plans to rest Curry, Thompson, Draymond Green and Andre Iguodala. Should be interesting.

Oakland- The Golden State Warriors and the Boston Celtics played a very hotly contested game for three periods of play Wednesday night at the Oracle Arena. It was a seesaw game, and neither team could pull away. Both teams were excellent on defense but the Celtics were better in the fourth quarter as they stopped the Dubs cold. The Warriors went 3 minutes and 19 seconds without a point to start the final stanza. The Celtics were all over the Warriors and did not commit very many fouls in the game. They outscored the Warriors 27-12 to win the game and snap the Dubs 10-game winning streak at Oracle.

Steph Curry and Klay Thompson led the Warrior attack but it wasn’t enough. The Celtics were led by Isiah Thomas’ 25 points and Kelly Olynyk, off the bench, killed the Dubs with 17 points, 5 assists, and 5 rebounds. The Celtic bench outscored the Warrior Bench 35-17.

The Warriors led 15-7 early in the first quarter. The Celtics regrouped but still trailed by three at the end of the period 28-25.  There were 4 ties in the period. The Celtics led 45-44 when the Dubs went on a 10-1 run at the end of the first half to take a 50-46 advantage. The third quarter was more of the same. The lead went back and forth once more. The Dubs led 69-63 but Boston came back and regained the lead 72-71. Steph Curry hit a three as the buzzer sounded to propel Golden State into a 74-72 lead at the end of three periods of action. In the 4th

In the 4th quarter, Boston dominated on both ends of the court. The Celtics, who had lost their last 2 games on the road, were determined to put away a very tired Warrior team. They held the Dubs to zero points for over the first 3 minutes of the period.  They increased their lead 83-79 with 6:08 left. The Warriors could not buy a bucket at this point. Boston kept the pressure on and went on to win 99-86.

Game Notes and stats- The Warriors drop to 52-12 and are just one game ahead of the San Antonio Spurs for the best record and home-court advantage in the Western Conference. The Celtics improve to 41-24 and they own the second-best record in the Eastern conference.

Draymond Green was the only other Warrior to score double figures. Draymond scored 13 to go along with 2 assists, 8 rebounds, and 3 blocked shots. The Celtics were led by Isiah Thomas, Kelly Olynyk, Al Horford, Avery Bradley, and Jae Crowder.  Both teams shot 44% from the floor but the Dubs made just six 3-point shots in 30 tries. The Celts were 10-fo-29 in that department. Both teams played well on defense. The Dubs had 8 steals and 12 blocks while Boston’s defense made 12 steals but only 1 blocked shot. The Warriors turned the ball over 17 times. Boston committed just 12 turnovers.

The Warriors are back on the road again. They meet the Minnesota Timberwolves Friday night and then finish the road trip in San Antonio on Saturday night against the Spurs. The Dubs have not played the Spurs since Opening Night and the Spurs beat them decisively.

Golden State Warriors Podcast with David Zizmor: W’s looking for a regulation time victory over Celts on Wed night

The Boston Celtics are coming to Oracle Arena and the Celts are a team that has given the Golden State Warriors fits like in last season’s game. The Celts have aggressive defense and Brad Stevens is really good coach. He’s done a good job as any trying to find ways to stymie the Warriors on offense

You might remember the Warriors had that great offense to start the season and Boston was the last streak in that game and it was barely a win they had to go to double overtime at the Garden to pull that one out. The Warriors were so exhausted and the next night they had to play Milwaukee and they lost that one.
