Cal Bears podcast with Morris Phillips: Cal’s crucial win over Stanford last Sat could build momentum going into Thu night vs. Oregon

BERKELEY–The Cal Bears who just played Stanford a couple of weeks ago and really looked bad against Stanford in  their last meeting of the season won last Saturday night. They really made a huge difference coming off two road loses too. In terms of their approach and in terms of their intensity performance at Stanford. It was nice for Cal to turn the tables on Stanford a team they should do better than they have been and that was the case on Saturday.

The Bears have missed Tyrone Wallace and they’ve lost one of their best players and Cal has had some nicks and bruises at different times. The Cardinal have been decimated they don’t have Reid Travis that’s someone that they really need to score. They need offense and he could provide it for them for the majority of the Pac 12 season.

Home cooking: Cal turns the tables on Stanford at Haas Pavilion

RooksMathews

By Morris Phillips

So good was Stanford’s game plan from January 14, the Cal Bears adopted it as their own for Saturday’s rematch against the hated Cardinal. That and Cal’s significant home court advantage were enough to make the Bears victorious the second time around.

On the strength of a huge disparity at the free throw line, the Bears parlayed a 41-point first half into a 76-61 win over Stanford at Haas Pavilion. The win allowed the Bears to stay undefeated at home this season (14-0) and improve their Pac-12 record to 5-5 with eight regular season games remaining.

Three weeks ago, Stanford built a wall around the basket defensively, and paraded to the free throw line as a byproduct of their greater aggressiveness in beating the Bears 77-71. But on Saturday is was if the Cardinal had discarded the blueprint in a recycling bin right before they got on the team bus for the trip to Berkeley.

“Well, to be quite frank, our defense hasn’t traveled and that’s why I say Monday we’ve got to continue to focus on it,” Johnny Dawkins said afterward in trying to make sense of his team’s current woes on the road, in which they’ve dropped their last four conference games on the road by an average of 16 points.

Meanwhile, the Bears made a complete about face, attempting 37 free throw attempts on Saturday after allowing the Cardinal 38 attempts from the line at Maples Pavilion on January 14. Discouraged from getting to the rim and content to shoot threes in the first matchup, the Bears repeatedly took advantage inside in this one, enjoying a healthy edge on the glass and points in the paint.

When the Bears did tee it up from distance on Saturday, Stanford’s defenders were often a step slow to the spot as the Bears made nine of 17 from three. Inside the arc, Cal was just as good, hitting 13 of 24 and shooting 54 percent from the field for the game.

“They shot 38 free throws last game, and we should have shot a similar number, and we didn’t, and that really showed our lack of aggressiveness,” Jordan Mathews said. “So today we just thought being aggressive and throwing the ball in the paint and having our bigs perform well tonight would get us the win.”

Kameron Rooks proved well versed in the energized game plan, contributing 11 points and 12 rebounds in 24 minutes off the bench. Coach Cuonzo Martin has mixed and matched his two seven-footers all season, this time electing to start Kingsley Okoroh alongside Ivan Rabb. But less than two minutes in and the Bears trailing 6-0, Martin removed Okoroh, and Rooks entered the game a few minutes after that.

The Bears responded by scoring 33 of the next 45 points, getting big contributions from Rooks and seldom-used Roger Moute A Bidias. The Bears went on to lead by 16 at the half, then briefly pushing the lead to 26 early in the second half.

“The biggest key that we talked about more than anything was our big guys had to win the game,” Martin said. “That’s where the game would be won, on the blocks, meaning our bigs scoring around the rim, getting those guys in foul trouble or Rosco’s making plays and we have to make adjustments. I felt like we did a good job from that standpoint.”

Five Bears finished in double-digit scoring led by Mathews with 18 points, and Jaylen Brown with 16. Roscoe Allen, Stanford’s 6’9” outside-in threat drew the majority of Cal’s attention, finishing with 16 points, but missing eight of his 12 shot attempts.

The Cardinal didn’t get much help from Michael Humphrey and Christian Sanders. Humphrey, an inside threat, played just seven minutes, departing when a previously existing thigh injury reappeared. Sanders, who began the season as Stanford’s starting point guard also was slowed and benched due to a previous injury.

The Bears improved to 15-8, 5-5 likely enough to snag an NCAA tournament bid if things concluded this week. But the formula that says the Bears need to win their four remaining home games and somehow manage to snatch a pair of wins on the road will receive a big challenge when the first-place Oregon Ducks come to Haas on Thursday.

Cal Bears basketball podcast with Michael Duca: Martin should be concerned going into Stanford game Sat night

by Michael Duca

photo credit: thehoopdoctores.com–Cal’s Ivan Rabb hopes that another year at Cal will help make him draft eligible

BERKELEY–Going into Saturday night’s game against Stanford Cal head coach Cuonzo Martin should be concerned they did everything they could to give away a game last Saturday night to Colorado. The Colorado Bufaloes gave every kind of gift they could to the Cal Bears under the tree and the Bears still couldn’t figure out how to open it.

When you miss the 15 of your first 16 shots in a game you have no business being in let alone basically tied at half time. The Bears are a very frustrating team to watch at this point. It’s frustrating for the Cal front office, the students, and the fans.

There is anything but sleep for Martin right now but for Ivan Rabb who no doubt will be a top ten NBA draft pick needs a year or two of college seasoning I keep listening to commentaries on the radio while on the road saying that Rabb needs another year. It’s clear that the Bears Rabb and Jaylen Brown do not have the defensive skills to get to the next level and it’s great to get drafted but it doesn’t make much sense to get drafted and sit on the bench.

By Jeremy Kahn

After starting their game against the California Golden Bears a woeful 1-for-19, Colorado Buffaloes head coach Tad Boyle took a timeout to talk to his team.

Following their slow start, the Buffaloes regrouped behind 18 points from Josh Scott and a late steal by Xavier Talton helped them defeat the Golden Bears 70-62.

With the victory, the Buffaloes improve to 17-5 on the season, and 6-3 in PAC-12 play, while the Golden Bears dropped their second straight after defeating the then number 12 Arizona Wildcats at Haas Pavilion on January 23. The Buffaloes and the Golden Bears also split their season series, as the Golden Bears won the initial matchup 79-65 on January 1 at Haas Pavilion.

The Golden Bears were led by Jaylen Brown, who scored 21 points, including 13 of the Golden Bears final 16 points.

Once again, the Golden Bears were without the services of Tyrone Wallace, who missed his fourth straight game with a broken bone in his right hand that was suffered on January 16.

Ivan Rabb and Jordan Matthews each scored 13 points for the Golden Bears, who fall to 14-8 on the season and 4-5 in conference play.

After two straight hard fought home wins over the Arizona State Sun Devils and the then 12th ranked Arizona Wildcats, the California Golden Bears return to the road, where they have struggled this season.

Jakob Poeltl scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds, as the Utah Utes defeated the Golden Bears 73-64 at the Jon Huntsman Center.

Kyle Kuzma and Brandon Taylor each 15 points for the Utes, who have four straight games and have improved to 16-5 overall and 5-3 in PAC-12 play.

Jaylen Brown tied his career-high with 27 points, while Ivan Rabb added 12, as the Golden Bears fell to 1-5 on the road this season.

The Utes put together a 23-4 run after they trailed the Golden Bears by five points in the second half. Taylor came up big during the run, as he nailed back-to-back three pointers, while Poeltl scored on a dunk and an old fashioned three-point play and Kuzma ended the run with six straight points to give the Utes a 58-44 lead.

Brown got the Golden Bears back in the game, as he scored on a three-point play to bring the Golden Bears to within four points.

Cal Bears basketball podcast with Michael Duca: Cal hits the road in Utah and Colorado for toughest trip of the year

On the Cal Bears (14-6)  basketball podcast the Bears have won two of their last three games with Cal winning an impressive one point margin 74-73 over Arizona (16-4) not an easy task. Cal head coach Cuonzo Martin had his defensive strategy set up to stop the Wild Cat’s Gabe York who was driving with just seconds left of the second overtime. York missed the bucket and the game winner and Cal defeated one of the Pac 12’s toughest teams.

The Bears have been undeniable at Haas Pavilion their undefeated at home 13-0 and played in front of a sell out crowd last Saturday of 11,858. Coach Martin said about the Arizona offense that the Wild Cats are the toughest offenses they have faced all season. The Bears hit the road to face Utah and Colorado for their toughest road challenge of the season thus far.

BERKELEY-Coming off their hard fought 75-70 victory over the Arizona State Sun Devils, the California Golden Bears looked for the sweep of the Arizona schools.

Jordan Matthews scored 28 points, while Jaylen Brown added 15 points and the Golden Bears defeated the number 12th ranked Arizona Wildcats 74-73 before a sellout crowd of 11,877 at Haas Pavilion.

Brown gave the Golden Bears their final lead of the game with 18 seconds remaining in the game, as he hit one of two free throws; however Gabe York missed the potential game-winning jumper and Matthews secured the defensive rebound and the student section stormed the floor after the upset victory.

This was the first win by the Golden Bears over the Wildcats since February 1, 2014, when the Golden Bears defeated the then number one ranked Wildcats 60-58 at Haas Pavilion.

Despite falling behind by six points on multiple occasions in the first half, the Golden Bears fought back to get within two points at the half, as Jordan Mathews hit his second three-pointer of the game.

Unfortunately, both Kingsley Okoroh and Kameron Rooks each picked up three fouls in the first half.

Senior guard Tyrone Wallace missed his second straight game, as he out with a broken bone in his right hand.

With the win, the Golden Bears up their record at Haas Pavilion up to 13-0, their best start since the 2011-2012 season when their won their first 14 games on their way to a 17-1 record on Pete Newell Court at Haas Pavilion.

Okoroh was forced to the bench just 13 seconds into the second half, as he picked his fourth foul and was replaced by Rooks.

Jabari Bird gave the Golden Bears a 38-37 lead in the early moments of the second half, as he hit a three-pointer.

Brown extended the Golden Bears lead up to 40-37, as he hit two of three free throws after being fouled on a three-point attempt Kadeem Allen.

Bird hit another three, as the Golden Bears extended their lead up to six points, forcing Miller to call his second timeout after a 8-0 run by the Golden Bears that sent the Haas Pavilion crowd into a frenzy.

The Golden Bears increased their lead to nine points, as Matthews hit back-to-back three pointers to extend the Golden Bears to 51-42, but the Wildcats would not go away.

Before you knew it, the Wildcats went on a 7-0 run to cut the Golden Bears lead down to 51-49, but the Golden Bears were not fazed.

The Golden Bears then went on a 9-2 run to extend the back to nine, and the Golden Bears never gave into the bigger Wildcats.

After Matthews hit two free throws to extend the lead up to 64-59, the Wildcats went right down the floor and Mark Tollefsen cut the Golden Bears down to two, as the transfer from the University of San Francisco and Danville native hit a big three-pointer.

The Wildcats refused to go away, as the Wildcats tied it up late on two different occasions; however the Golden Bears refused to give in to the Wildcats.

York led the Wildcats with 15 points, while Kaleb Tarczewski scored 12 before fouling out when Brown went to the line and hit one of free throws.

Freshman duo lead Golden Bears to victory

By Jeremy Kahn

BERKELEY-After a hard fought loss to their archrival Stanford Cardinal on January 14, the California Golden Bears returned to the friendly confines of Haas Pavilion, where they were a perfect 11-0 on the season.

Freshman sensation Ivan Rabb was remarkable, as he scored 20 points, pulled down eight boards and dished off a career-high six assists and the Golden Bears defeated the Arizona State Sun Devils 75-70 at Haas Pavilion.

The 20 points were a career-high for the forward, who attended Bishop O’Dowd High School in Oakland.

Rabb scored 12 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished off five assists in the first half, as the Golden Bears went into the locker room after the first 20 minutes with a 38-30 lead.

Obinna Oleka led the Sun Devils with xx points, but it was not enough, as the Sun Devils fall to 11-8 on the season, and drop 1-5 in conference play under first-year head coach Bobby Hurley.

Rabb received a lot of help from fellow freshman Jaylen Brown, as the native of Atlanta scored 19 points, as the Golden Bears even their conference record at 3-3, and improve to 13-6 overall on the season.

Brown, who went to Wheeler High School in Atlanta, the same high school as Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored seven points to help Rabb.

Things were looking really good for the Golden Bears in the first half, as they took the lead and never relinquished it.

In the second half, it was a totally different story, as the Golden Bears took a 54-40 lead, but the Sun Devils would not go away, as they went on a 17-5 run to cut the Golden Bears lead down to two at 59-57 with under eight minutes remaining in the game. After Rabb hit two free throws, Savon Goodman got the Sun Devils within two.

It was a big second half for Goodman, as he scored nine of his points after the half.

Andre Spight led the Sun Devils with eight points in the first half, while Tra Holder and Oleka each scored five points.

Rabb came up big for the Golden Bears when they needed it the most at the end of the game, as he hit one of two from the line to give the Golden Bears a one-point lead. After the free throw, Rabb then came up big on the defensive end, as he blocked a Eric Jacobsen shot that turned into free throws for Brown, who split the pair.

Brown then gave the Golden Bears a four-point lead, as he drove the lane for a layup, but the Sun Devils would not go away, as Gerry Blakes hit a corner three to cut the Golden Bears lead down to one with 33.9 seconds remaining.

The Golden Bears were forced to call a timeout after the Sun Devils pressured them in the corner, and they were in danger turning the ball over.

Brown hit two free throws to give the Golden Bears a three-point lead, but Brown fouled out with 18.5 seconds remaining and sent Oleka to the free throw, where he hit the pair.

Jordan Matthews put the game away, as he hit two free throws and then after Holder missed a three-pointer that would have tied it, Jabari Bird hit two free throws to seal the five-point victory.

Cal Bears podcast with Michael Duca: Wallace’s absence going to impact Bears as ASU and Arizona come in

AP photo:  Cal Bears Ty Wallace (3) taking it ally oop against Stanford on Wed Jan 13 now out 4-6 weeks with broken hand

On the Cal Bears (12-6) basketball podcast Ty Wallace’s broken wrist will take him out for four to six weeks and will vastly impact the Bears offensive scheme. The timing couldn’t have been worse with the Arizona Wild Cats (10-3) coming in to face the Bears on Saturday night at Haas Pavilion.

The Bears face the ASU Sun Devils (11-7) this Thursday night at Haas and it will be  test to see what Bears replacement for Wallace, Sam Singer can do. Singer has some big shoes to fill as Wallace stats up until the injury was 15.4 ppg, 4.6 asts, and 5.1 on rebs.

NCAA Podcast with Daniel Dullum: Stanford improves on rebounds, free throws, and lots of help from Rosco

by Dainiel Dullum

The Arizona Wild Cats (15-3)  will be making a trip to Stanford (10-6) on Thursday. The Cardinal are coming off a six point win last Thursday to the Cal Bears (12-6) at Maples Pavilion. The Cardinal have some great offensive weapons coming into Thursday night’s contest with top scorers Rosco Allen, Marcus Allen, and Michael Humphrey. Rosco  had 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Cardinal.

The Cardinal last Thursday played a real tight game on defense in the paint and protected the boards which might explains why they were able to hold the Bears to just six point for the 77-71 win in the two college’s basketball version of the Big Game.

Stanford had a game plan coming off a 67 percent average on the free throw line they saw the Bears commit fouls that resulted in their opportunities to get to the line and improve their average. It was the free throws, getting fouled, great shooting from Rosco that helped in the win Thursday. They get ready for Arizona this time at Stanford and the Cardinal could win but it will be a handful with Arizona’s brash offense and defense.
