California took a giant step toward attaining bowl eligibility on Saturday, as the Golden Bears fought off a late charge from Oregon State and defeated the Beavers 39-25 at Memorial Stadium in Berkeley.

Cal not only turned in its top offensive performance of the season, but the defense stepped up as well, forcing three turnovers and blocking a punt.

Elijah Hicks and Nate Rutchena each picked off a pass for the Bears, while Marqez Bimage strpped the ball from Beavers running back B.J. Baylor.

The Golden Bears (3-5 overall, 2-3 Pac-12) took a 31-17 lead into the fourth quarter, but Beavers quarterback Chance Nolan found Trevon Bradford open up the middle for a 46-yard touchdown, Nolan ran for the 2-point conversion, pulling OSU to within 31-25 with 12 minutes to play.

With 6:40 remaining, Cal answered with a 2-yard scoring pass from Chase Garbers to Christopher Brooks. A successful run by Brooks on the 2-point conversion made it a two-possession game.

Cal built a 10-0 first-quarter lead on a Garbers 3-yard touchdown run and a 45-yard field goal by Dario Longhetto. One minute into the second quarterm Everett Hayes kicked a 29-yard field goal, but the Bears responded with an 8-yard TD run by Damien Moore, giving Cal a 17-3 lead.

Oregon State (5-3, 3-2) cut the Bears’ lead to 17-10 when Bradford hauled in a scoring pass from Nolan with 1:15 left in the first half.

Three minutes into the third quarter, Cal extended its lead to 24-10 on a 38-yard touchdown pass from Garbers to Brooks. At 3:50 of the third quarter, Deshaun Fenwick’s 4-yard TD run brought the Beavers to within 24-17. Garbers responded with a 38-yard touchdown pass to Trevon Clark with 11 seconds left in the quarter.

Garbers was 17-for-26 for 262 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. Moore carried 11 times for 111 yards, and Brooks finished with 88 rushing yards on 20 attempts. Clark caught 5 passes for 90 yards.

Nolan was 15 of 26 for 243 yards and two touchdowns, and was picked off twice and sacked once. Bradford caught six passes for 124 yards and two scores.

Next week, Cal travels to Tucson to face Arizona.

California was looking for an opportunity to snag that first football win of the season over an FBS opponent, and achieved that goal with a 26-3 win over Colorado in a Pac-12 game at Berkeley.

Golden Bears quarterback Chase Garbers completed 22 of 29 for 225 passing yards and two touchdowns without an interception. Garbers also ran for 96 yards, moving into first place on Cal’s career rushing chart for quarterbacks, passing Joe Kapp.

The defensive standout for Cal (2-5 overall, 1-3 Pac-12) was safety Elijah Hicks, who recorded six tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, picked off one pass and had one of the Bears’ six sacks.

Buffaloes quarterback Brendan Lewis was 9 of 17 for 69 yards. He had a minus-9 yards rushing.
The Bears were off and running early. Garbers scrambled for 38 yards on a third-and-6 from the Cal 30, leading to a Dario Longhetto 49-yard field goal with 9:47 left in the first quarter. That put the Bears ahead to stay.
Minutes later, Colorado (2-5 overall, 1-3 Pac-12) drove to the Cal 49 before Buffaloes running back Jarek Broussard was stopped for a 1-yard loss on fourth-and-1.

That stop of Colorado on downs led to Garbers throwing a 24-yard scoring strike to freshman tight end Keleki Latu, giving the Bears a 10-0 lead at 6:05 of the opening period.

Longhetto booted a 30-yard field goal at 9:23 of the second quarter, putting Cal up 13-0. After Brenden Rice (son of Hall of Famer Jerry Rice) returned a kickoff 67 yards to the Cal 33, Cole Becker connected on a 33-yard field goal.
With 3:21 to play in the second quarter, Garbers threw a TD pass to Gavin Reinwald. Longhetto hit a 51-yard field goal on the final play of the quarter, putting the Bears up 23-3 at halftime. Cal scored on each of its possessions in the first half and outgained the Buffs 297-91 in total yards.

The Bears host Oregon State next Saturday, with a 4 p.m. kickoff. The Beavers (5-2 overall, 3-1 Pac-12) beat Utah 42-34 in their last game.

On the Cal Bears podcast with Daniel:

#1 Daniel the Cal Bears (1-5) have had a tough time of it with five loses in the loss column Bears head coach Justin Wilcox trying to figure things out on both sides of the ball.

#2 The Oregon Ducks (5-1) Cal’s last opponent won by a touchdown. The Ducks scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter and that pretty much was the difference in the 24-17 loss.

#3 The Ducks a formidable opponent didn’t give much breathing room to the Bears on both sides of the ball and on offense Ducks quarterback Anthony Brown threw 20-28, 244 yards, only one touchdown pass but it was big since the Ducks won by a touchdown.

#4 Bears quarterback Chase Garbers had a decent afternoon against the Ducks last week 25-43, 247 yards, and two touchdowns. No doubt Garbers was airing it out but couldn’t convert a lot of his pass attempts.

#5 The Bears will play the first of two home games starting with the Colorado Buffaloes (2-4) this Sat Oct 23 at Cal. Daniel which Buffaloes team is going to show up the team that got slaughtered in a laugher to USC 37-14 on Oct 2? Or the team that won in a laugher last Sat Oct 16th in Colorado shutting out Arizona (0-6) 34-0.

Oregon improved to 5-1 overall.

Ducks quarterback Anthony Brown scored the go-ahead touchdown on an 11-yard run with 5:42 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Ducks’ defense then held Cal on downs inside their 5-yard line as time ran out.

Oregon scored first early in the first quarter when Camden Lewis booted a 49-yard field goal. The Bears took their first lead at 5:57 of the first period on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Garbers to Jake Tonges, putting Cal up 7-3.

On the Cal football podcast with Daniel:

#1 Daniel, in the last two games the Cal Bears (1-4) have convincingly been defeated Sep 25 in Seattle by the Washington Huskies (2-3) 31-24 and Oct 2 by the Washington State Cougars (3-3) 21-6. How much would you allude the loses to a break down in the Cal defense.

#2 In the last game against the Cougars quarterback Jayden de Laura threw for 25-41, 219 yards, three touchdowns, and was intercepted twice.

#3 The Cougars scored two touchdowns in the first quarter and Cal could only answer with six points in the first quarter for all their scoring for the night.

#4 Cal quarterback Chase Garbers just couldn’t get anything going on offense going 14-30, 152 yards, and no touchdowns as Cal was shutout in the second, third and fourth quarters.

#5 The Oregon Ducks (4-1) are next for Cal this Sat Oct 16th. The Ducks lost their last game to the Stanford Cardinal (3-2) 31-24 at Stanford Stadium. The Ducks quarterback Anthony Brown was 14-26, 186 yards, no touchdowns and one interception.

Cal can’t get any offense going drop third straight to WSU 21-6

California quarterback Chase Garbers (7) starts the quarterback keeper against the Washington State Cougars during the first quarter at Memorial Stadium in Berkeley on Sat Oct 2, 2021 (AP News photo)

By Morris Phillips and Michael Duca

It’s tough to lose three straight but it’s tougher to lose on your own home field which the Cal Golden Bears (1-4) did at UC Berkeley Memorial Stadium to the Washington State Cougars (2-3) 21-6.

The Cougars quarterback Jayden De Laura threw for three touchdowns, was 25-41 for 219 yards and was intercepted twice but the defense held their ground and De Laura and the offense just got enough scoring for the win.

On one of the two passes from De Laura to wide out Calvin Jackson Jr who made a one handed catch in the end zone at the corner. This was De Laura’s first game back since suffering a leg injury two weeks ago against the USC Trojans.

The 25 completions out of 41 attempts for De Laura tied his career best in a game and it helped the Cougars pick up their first win at Cal since the 2013 season. “It felt fine to go out there,” de Laura said. “I knew I had to bring some energy and do my part. I just gave the receivers and the running backs the ball and let them make plays.”

Jackson Jr had his way with the Cal defense with six receptions for 53 yards Jackson’s teammate wide receiver De’Zhaun Stribling had a pretty decent afternoon himself with four catches for 36 yards and one touchdown.

The Cal offense just sputtered and it was tough especially to lose at home and Bears quarterback Chase Garbers came up empty handed for the afternoon not being able to throw one touchdown, going 14-30 for 152 yards and an interception.

The Bears next opponent the Oregon Ducks (4-1) No.3 next Sat Oct 9 who were just knocked off by the Stanford Cardinal (3-2) 31-24 will be pumped and ready to go and it’s the last thing the Bears want is to walk into a hornets nest which they can expect at Autzen Stadium in Eugene.

Garbers says the Bears need to be prepared and they need to find out who they are, “These next two weeks we’re really going to find out who we are as a team, who we are as people. They had our number, they did a great job and they just outplayed us. That happens.”

Huskies outlast Bears in overtime 31-24 in Seattle

The Cal Bears running back Damien Moore (28) is caught up from below with a no look stop by the Washington Huskies Kyle Gordon during the first half action at University Washington in Seattle on Sat Sep 25, 2021 (AP News photo)

By Morris Phillips and Michael Duca

With the score all knotted up at 24-24 at the University of Washington in the overtime stanza the Washington Huskies (2-2) Cameron Williams and Jackson Sirmon got the Cal Bears (1-3) Damien Moore to fumble at the Huskies one yard line after a hard hit and the Huskies Ryan Bowman jumped on the loose ball for the recovery and what would save the Huskies from facing a second overtime as the Bears were just a yard away from tying up the game.

The officials called for a review to make sure that the fumble was legit and ruled that it was which was unfortunate for the Bears as time and possession would run out for Cal.

The Huskies Seth Mcgrew scored his second touchdown of the game at the beginning of the overtime to give the Huskies a seven point lead and eventual win 31-24. This was the first meeting between the two schools since 2019. Last season the game was cancelled during the Covid 19 crisis. If Cal had won it Saturday it would have been their third straight win in 100 meetings with Washington.

Cal quarterback Chase Garbers in the post game interview said that Moore would like to have that fumble back as Moore was pretty down after the game about coughing up the ball, “Obviously Damien wants that one back. We all do,” said Garbers “Stuff happens in football, you get unlucky sometimes, but we’re a really close group in the locker room so we’re all there for each other.”

Garbers himself had a relatively good game under center throwing for 319 yards 30-41 for two touchdowns and two interceptions. Garbers was picked off twice by the Huskies Kyler Gordon one of the picks happened early in the fourth quarter and the Huskies couldn’t score and Garbers later was able to run a seven yard touchdown with at 2:51 which tied up the game.

The Bears return to UC Berkeley for a Sat Oct 2 meeting at Memorial Stadium with the Washington State Cougars for a 2pm PDT kickoff. The Cougars (1-3) lost in their last game Saturday to the Utah Utes (2-2) 24-13. The Utes scored two unanswered touchdowns in the fourth quarter as the Cougars defense broke down at Utah.

It’s a shootout Cal bests Sacramento State 42-30

Cal Bears quarterback Chase Garbers passes against the Sacramento State Hornets at Cal Memorial Stadium during the home opener at UC Berkeley on Sat Sep 18, 2021 (AP News photo)

By Morris Phillips and Michael Duca

Cal Bears quarterback Chase Garbers lead Cal to the Bears first victory of 2021 with a convincing 42-30 win over the visiting Sacramento State Hornets at Cal Memorial Stadium. Garbers had himself an afternoon throwing 22-34 for 288 yards and two touchdowns. The Bears offense dominated in the first half 21-6 and the Hornets made it interesting in the second half outscoring the Bears 24-21 but the Bears hung on for the 12 point win.

The Bears Nikko Remiglio returned a second half kick off for a touchdown. Bears head coach Justin Wilcox said that winning in college football is not an easy task and he’s not taking the Bears first win of the season for granted, “You never minimize a win. It’s hard winning in college football, regardless of who you’re playing. … It’s good to get a win. But we all know that we need to be much, much better.” said Wilcox.

The Bears upon returning back to Berkeley and a full season schedule wanted to avoid going 0-3 for the first time since 2001 and in the abbreviated season of six games in 2020 the Bears lost the first three games of the season.

The Bears offense has improved over the last two games, Garbers didn’t waste anytime contributing to getting the Bears on the scoreboard on the first two drives Garbers gave to Bears running back Damien Moore who carried twice for four yard touchdowns. Moore had 87 yards in Saturday’s game.

Cal wide receiver Jeremiah Hunter caught a Garbers pass for a 45 yard touchdown. Hunter would come away with five receptions for 78 yards and the one touchdown. The Bears Trevon Clark scored a 12 yard touchdown in the third quarter and carried for a 16 yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.

“Each and every week we have gotten better, we have taken steps forward. As the season goes on and weeks go on, we’ll keep taking that next step.” said Garbers. Remiglio’s kickoff return to open the second half a 99 yard return really set the tone and the Bears confidence carried the rest of the game.

It’s off to Seattle and the Washington Huskies next Sat Sep 26th the Huskies got a huge win this Saturday against the Arkansas Redwolves 52-3. Huskies quarterback Dylan Morris went 23-39, 367 yards and two touchdowns against Arkansas.
