Who will come out on top in the battle of the coaches? The Sacramento Kings Mike Brown (left) or the Golden State Warriors Steve Kerr (right) as both coaches and teams meet for game 1 of the 2023 NBA Playoffs at Golden 1 Center on Sat Apr 15, 2023 (USA Today file photo)

On the Sacramento Kings podcast:

#1 The Sacramento Kings have youth on their side as they open up the NBA Playoffs at Golden 1 Center for game 1 on Saturday as opposed to some of the older veterans on the Golden State Warriors will youth hold true over Golden State or will experienced veterans be the headlines in these playoffs over Sacramento?

#2 After leaving Andrew Wiggins Golden State to take care of his father’s health issues for over a month and half will the Warriors Wiggins be ready for playoff battle? Wiggins has worked out with the team and did not play the last three regular season games of the season.

#3 The Kings lost to the Warriors in their last regular season meeting on Fri Apr 7 119-97 at Golden One it was one of the Warriors very few road trip wins their 11th. The circumstances were a bit different for the Kings than regular season form. The Kings had already clinched, they didn’t want to risk injury to their key core in the line up namely De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis. The Warriors needed that game and came away the winner. You were at that game tell us how that one looked with those components in place.

#4 The question keeps coming up Stephen Curry and the Warriors get hot in post season it’s a time of the year they leave the regular season mistakes in the rearview mirror and come out for the fight and go deep in the playoffs for their eyes on the prize that hardware prize. Seeing the Kings as you have all season and know what Golden State has done in the past is this one for the ages or will the Kings struggle with Golden State in this first round.

#5 It’s the battle of the coaches: Steve Kerr Golden State Warriors head coach and former Warrior assistant coach and Sacramento Kings head coach Mike Brown. Brown looks to be the top candidate for NBA coach of the year for guiding an ailing Kings team to post season for the first time in 16 years. The Warriors are not intimidated and coach Kerr is familiar with Browns coaching style who comes out on top amongst these two brainy and great coaches?

Baltimore Orioles’ Adley Rutschman (35) watches his solo walkoff home run hit against Oakland Athletics relief pitcher Trevor May during the ninth inning at Camden Yards at Thu Apr 13, 2023 (AP News photo)

By Jerry Feitelberg

The Baltimore Orioles’ outstanding young catcher Adley Rutschman sent Trevor May’s second pitch in the bottom of the ninth out of the park to give the O’s a walk-off win 8-7 over the A’s Thursday afternoon. The A’s offense put seven runs on the board. Oakland scored eight runs in each of the two previous games.

The A’s pitchers needed help to contain the Orioles’ hitters. A’s starter, Adam Oller, was knocked out of the game in the top of the third. Oller gave up seven runs and eight hits in just two and 1/3rd innings of work.

A’s reliever Adrian Martinez restored order as he went three and 2/3rds innings and did not allow a hit or a run. Martinez allowed the A’s to stay in the game. The Orioles led 7-4 after three innings of play. Oakland fought back and tied the game at seven in the fifth. Here’s how things went.

The A’s grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. A’s centerfielder Esteury Riz led off with a double. Ruiz tagged and advanced to third on Ramon Laureano’s fly ball to right field. Brent Rooker’s sacrifice fly drove in Ruiz with the A’s first run.

The Orioles put three runs on the board in the bottom of the second inning. The O’s rally started when Adam Oller hit O’s third baseman Gunnar Henderson with a pitch. Austin Hays continued his onslaught against the A’s pitching when he singled, sending Henderson to second base.

Right fielder Terrin Vavra singled to load the bases with one out. First baseman Ryan O’Hearn singled to drive in Henderson and Hays. Vavra went to third on the play. Jorge Mateo hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Vavra with the O’s third run of the game. The Orioles sent eight men to the plate in the inning. The O’s lead 3-1.

The A’s regained the lead in the top of the third. With one out, second baseman Nick Allen singled to right. Former A’s pitcher, Cole Irvin, hit Esrury Ruiz with a pitch to put men on at first and second. Irvin stuck out Laureano for the second out. For the second game in a row, Brent Rooker slammed a three-run dinger over the fence in center field.

The A’s led 4-3 midway through the third inning. The lead didn’t last long. The Orioles’ offense continued to pound Adam Oller’s slants. Ryan Mountcastle led off the bottom of the third with his sixth home run. It was his fourth homer in the four-game set with the A’s. Gunnar Henderson then doubled to deep right field. Austin Hays singled, sending Henderson to third.

Orioles’ second baseman Adam Frazier singled to drive in Henderson with the O’s fifth run. Hays went to third on the hit. Oller had not retired a hitter in the inning. Oller walked Vavra to load the bases. Ryan O’Hearn’s sacrifice fly drove in Hays with the sixth run of the game for the O’s. A’s manager Mark Kotsay brought in Adrian Martinez to pitch.

Martinez got Jorge Mateo to ground into a fielder’s choice. Vavra was out at second, but Frazier scored on the play. Martinez struck out Cedric Mullins to end the inning. The Orioles sent eight men to the plate for the second consecutive inning. This time they put four runs on the board to lead 7-4 after three innings of play.

The A’s. to their credit, refused to wilt. The A’s rallied to score twice after two out in their half of the fourth. The O’s starter Cole Irvin retired the first two hitters. A’s catcher Carlos Ruiz singled to start the rally. Irvin, who normally does not walk a lot of batters, walked Shea Lamgeliers and Nick Allen to load the bases. Esteury Ruiz singled to drive in Carlos Perez and Langeliers. The A’s were back in the game, trailing by one 7-6.

The A’s tied the game in the fifth. Brent Rooker, who homered earlier, blasted his second of the game. The ball traveled 4-1 feet and landed in the first row of seats in the left-field stands. It was Rooker’s fifth RBI of the game.

The game stayed scoreless until the bottom of the ninth. Mark Kotsay summoned the veteran hurler, Trevor May, from the bullpen to face the Orioles’ Adley Rutschman. Rutschman homered on May’s second pitch. The ball was right down the middle, and Rutschman did not miss. Baltimore wins the game 8-7.

Game Notes: The A’s offense came to life in the last three games of the four-game Series. The A’s scored 23 runs in those three contests. The A’s won only one of the three. The Orioles won the four-game set three games to one. The A’s are now 3-10, and they lost six of the seven games on the road trip. The A’s return home to Oakland to host the New York Mets for three games starting Friday night.

The hitting starts for Oakland on Thursday were Carlos Perez, Esteury Ruiz, and Brent Booker. Perez and Ruiz each had three hits. Booker smashed two homes and drove in a career-high five runs in the game.

The pitching start was Adrian Martinez. Martinez kept the A’s in the game with three and 2/3rd innings of work. He did not allow a hit or a run. Dany Jimenez and Zach Jackson each pitched a scoreless inning.

The hitting stars for the Orioles were the big three plus two. Ryan Mountcastle’s home run in the fourth inning was his fourth in the Series. Austin Hays continued to torment the A’s pitchers. Hays had three hits in Thursday’s game.

The A’s pitchers held Rurtschman hitless in his first four trips to the plate on Thursday. Rutschman became the Orioles hero of the day when he hit a walk-off home run in the ninth to win the game for Baltimore. Vavra and Ryan O’Hearn each had two hits.

The line score for Oakland was seven runs, nine hits, and no errors. The Orioles’ line was eight runs, 12 hits, and no errors.

The A’s will send James Kaprielian (0-1 ERA 11.17) to the mound to face the Mets’ Kodai Senga (2-0 ERA 1.59) Friday night 6:40pm. Shintaro Fujinami will face Carlos Carrasco on Saturday, and JP Sears will go for Oakland against the Mets’ Max Scherzer.

Sunday’s game will honor the 1973 A’s team that beat the Mets four games to three in the World Series.

Friday night’s game will start at 6:40 pm.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: Study Says Climate Change is Affecting Baseball?

San Francisco Giants broadcaster Mike Kurkow once said to the author Amaury Pi Gonzalez about the effects of the weather changes “Let’s see which way the wind is blowing.” In this photo it rains at Oracle Park and climate change has been playing a part in baseball. (photo from shutterstruck.com file)

Study Says Climate Change is Affecting Baseball?

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

A study by Associate Professor of Economics Eric Fesselmeyer found that Major League Baseball (MLB) umpires call pitches less accurately in uncomfortable temperatures, with a performance at its worst in extreme heat conditions. Dartmouth researchers analyzed more than 100,000 major league games between 1962 and 2019 and found about 1 % of recent home runs can be linked to global warming.

It has always been like that, a game in very hot and humid weather will make it uncomfortable for the umpires, players, and even fans, but that is not Breaking News. (More on this towards the end of this article).

Dartmouth is an Ivy League school in New Hampshire ranked sixth most expensive in the US, at $76,480 per year. However, those who follow baseball for years always knew that weather affects baseball more than any other sport.

Universities are centers for learning, but sometimes they do studies like this when we all know that baseball is as much ruled by weather as, for example, there are rain-outs in baseball and not in Football, we all understand that windy conditions make the ball travel further or much less on a field with little or no wind.

If you visited Chicago, especially Wrigley Field, before games the pitchers scheduled to pitch that day or night, are always curious for watching which way the wind is blowing. If it is blowing from home plate to the outfield, pitchers know they might have a tough day, but if it is blowing the other way, it could be a good day for pitching.

Back in the 1990s when I was broadcasting Giants baseball and traveling with the team, I remember one trip to Wrigley Field. On that trip I remember Mike Krukow telling me “Let’s see which way the wind is blowing”, although he was not pitching, doing TV commentary, he always told me he checked the wind, earlier in his career when he pitched for the Cubs and later when he visited and pitched for the Giants.

Baseball parks are all different; they all have different dimensions (unlike most other sports where the field is exactly the same dimension). In Yankee Stadium more than likely you will have a stronger wind blowing to right-center field, but when you go to Seattle or other teams with retractable roofs or permanent roofs, hitting is affected.

You do not need to go to Dartmouth to know that humidity makes the air less dense and a ball will go farther on a humid day than it will on a dry day, so you can save that $76,000. At the Oakland Coliseum is never easy to hit a home run during a night game; however, the first week of this 2023 season a couple of cold nights with lots of wind carried what usually are regular fly balls for outs, to go over the fence for home runs.

If you watch baseball for years, you come to understand that is a unique game that is affected not only by the weather but by many other factors including by the clock beginning this season.

Baseball and Weather Quote: “There are three things you can do in a baseball game, you can win, or you can lose,or it can rain: -Casey Stengel.

Nothing to do with Climate Change: Since the average game, this season is down 31 minutes, MLB teams are now experimenting with extended alcohol sales as game time shortens due to the pitch clock. These teams have extended alcohol sales through the eighth inning: Arizona, Texas, Minnesota, and Milwaukee.

Giants Look Ahead to Three-Game Series With Struggling Tigers

Giants Look Ahead to Three-Game Series With Struggling Tigers

By Barbara Mason

The San Francisco Giants (6-7) had a day off Thursday after dropping a series to the rival Los Angeles Dodgers last night at Oracle. San Francisco had a three nothing lead going into the fourth inning in last nights game but the Dodgers Max Muncy hit a couple of home runs along with another long ball off the bat of Trayce Thompson to give the Dodgers a 10-3 lead in the top of the seventh inning.

The Dodgers went on to extend that lead winning the game 10-5. The biggest culprit in last nights loss was the Giants bullpen which did the team no favors. Too many walks and loading the bases with Dodger runners was their downfall in this game.

After the day off today, the Giants will be off to Detroit to take on the Tigers in a three game series at Comerica Park. The Giants will be looking to get their bullpen back on track sending Sean Manaea to the mound. The Giants offense will be facing Tiger pitcher Joey Wentz who will start for Detroit.

Wentz has not won a game this season and Manaea has not pitched a regular season game yet. His pre-season stats come in with one win and one loss. The Giants went through five pitchers in the loss last night and hope to right the ship in that respect.

They will need to get more innings from their starting pitcher Manaea on Friday night. The Tigers have been struggling this season with a record of 2-9 and the Giants are just below .500 with a 5-7 record coming into this game.

The Giants offense will lean heavily on Michael Conforto, should he be able to play, who has a batting average of .225 but is the home run leader on the team so far this season with three homers and six RBI’s. Thairo Estrada is the heavy hitter for the team with a .341 batting average which comes in at 23rd in the league.

The Giants will be without CF Bryce Johson who is out with a concussion after making a spectacular catch, saving multiple runs last night , but also crashing into the wall. He did remain on the ground for several minutes after the collision. He may hit the IL for the Giants but they await confirmation from the medical staff. Michael Conforto is also Day-To-Day. First pitch Friday night is scheduled for 3:40 PM.

San Francisco Giants podcast with Michael Duca: Giants open three game series in Detroit on Friday

San Francisco Giants’ Darin Ruf hits an RBI double against the Los Angeles Dodgers during the first inning at Oracle Park in San Francisco on Wed Apr 12, 2023 (AP News photo)

On the Giants podcast with Michael:

#1 Los Angeles Dodgers took two out of three from the San Francisco Giants winning Monday 9-1, losing 5-0 on Tuesday, and taking the rubber game 10-5 won Wednesday night. Your evaluation of the Giants in this series is there anything that Gabe Kapler should be concerned about.

#2 The Giants faced Dodger ace pitcher Clayton Kershaw who pitched six innings giving up five hits and improved his record to 2-1.

#3 San Francisco sent Alex Cobb to the mound who lasted 3.2 innings and gave up eight hits and two runs but was not the pitcher of record in Wednesday’s loss. Lots of hits from what you could observe how much did he struggle in this one?

#4 On Monday Giants starter Logan Webb had a tough time pitching to the Max Muncy a grand slam and home run and seven RBIs, was 0-1 on Tuesday, but came back on Wednesday and hit two home runs off Giant pitching. If you can keep him off the bases all he needs is one swing of the bat to touch them all.

#5 The Giants are headed for Detroit with Thursday off, the Giants will start Sean Manaea (0-0 ERA 4.50) and the Tigers have not announced a starter for Friday yet. Do you see the Giants gaining some ground in the Detroit series.

Oakland A’s podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: A’s have a break out game with 8-4 win over O’s

Oakland Athletics’ Brent Rooker (25) celebrates with Tony Kemp (5) after hitting a home run against the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards at Baltimore on Wed Apr 12, 2023 (AP News photo)

On the A’s podcast with Jerry Feitlelberg:

#1 The Oakland A’s snapped their six-game losing streak Wednesday night as they downed the Baltimore Orioles 8-4. The A’s scored eight runs for the second night in a row.

#2 The A’s starter, lefty Ken Waldichuk, had his best outing of the season. He did not get the win, but he pitched into the seventh inning. The A’s bullpen did the rest.

#3 The A’s jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Leadoff hitter Tony Kemp doubled to deep right-center field. Brent Rooker hit a homerun to help contribute to the eight run total.

#4 A’s reliever Domingo Acevedo has been put on the 15 day Injured List due to a lower back strain. Acevedo has struggled in the relief in particular the A’s last home stand against the Angels and the Guardians running his ERA up to 13.50 in his first five games surrendering ten hits and eight runs. Acevedo did have a good spring training with an 0.96 ERA.

#5 .The A’s will start Adam Oiller (0-0 ERA 4.66) Former A’s pitcher, lefty Cole Irvin (0-2 ERA 9.35), will pitch for the Birds. Irvin will be making his first start as an Oriole, and the crafty lefty would love a victory over his former teammates. The game will start at 10 am.

Giants Drop Series to Rival Dodgers 10-5; LA’s Muncy takes SF deep twice

Los Angeles Dodgers’ Max Muncy hits a three-run home run against the San Francisco Giants during the sixth inning  at Oracle Park in San Francisco on Wed Apr 12, 2023 (AP News photo)

Giants Drop Series to Rival Dodgers 10-5

By Barbara Mason

Wednesday evening the San Francisco Giants (5-7) played the rival Los Angeles Dodgers (7-6) in the rubber game of their three game series. The Dodgers won the first game of this series by a landslide 9-1 on Monday but the Giants came roaring back in game two winning a 5-0 shut out on Tuesday. Wednesday night San Francisco couldn’t get to .500 in this series losing to Los Angeles 10-5.

The Giants faced Dodger ace pitcher Clayton Kershaw who pitched six innings giving up five hits and improved his record to 2-1. San Francisco sent Alex Cobb to the mound who lasted 3.2 innings and gave up eight hits and two runs but was not the pitcher of record in Wednesday’s loss.

Game recap: The Giants got on the scoreboard early 2-0. J.D. Davis hit a sacrifice fly driving Thairo Estrada home for the first run of the game. The Giants would score a second run in the first inning when Darin Ruf doubled and Michael Conforto scored for the 2-0 lead.

Wilmer Flores singled in the second inning extending the Giants lead 3-0 when Joey Bart scored from third base. Alex Cobb had three good innings but ran into some trouble in the fourth inning.

The Dodgers had a couple of hits that got them up on the scoreboard. James Outman singled driving in J.D. Martinez for their first run.

Their second run came when Mookie Betts doubled and David Peralta scored. The Dodgers had snuck right back into this game trailing by a single run 3-2. At this point Cobb was pulled after allowing eight hits and two runs. Scott Alexander took over on the mound relieving Cobb.

In the fifth inning the Giants lead evaporated when slugger Max Muncy homered to center field and this game was tied 3-3. Scott Alexander was relieved by Taylor Rogers.

After walking two runners in the sixth inning Rogers had loaded the bases with no outs. He then faced Freddie Freeman in a pitching battle that ended with a walk after 15 pitches. Trayce Thompson scored and Los Angels had taken the lead 4-3.

It was back to the bullpen and Rogers was out; John Brebbia was in. It was a tough inning for the relief pitcher. Will Smith sacrificed, Chris Taylor scored and this game had turned around 5-3.

San Francisco was struggling to get out of the sixth inning but Dodger Max Muncy had other plans hitting his second home run of the game with two runners on base. Los Angeles had an 8-3 lead after six innings.

Relief pitcher Ross Stripling would take the mound in the seventh inning. More struggles for the Giant’s pitchers as Stripling walked the first at bat and gave up another Dodger home run. The Trayce Thompson homer gave the Dodgers a 10-3 lead.

The Giants got a rally going in the bottom of the seventh. Wilmer Flores singled in a run with a lot of work still for San Francisco. The Giants had two runners on base and two outs but left those runners stranded going into the eighth inning.

The Giants Thairo Estrada knocked one out of the park in the ninth inning. It was just too little too late as San Francisco lost this game and the series.

Stripling closed out this game. The Giants bullpen struggled mightily in this loss. The Giants had ten hits to the Dodgers 13 but they left runners on base and the pitching did the team no favors tonight. The home runs from Los Angles really hurt especially the second Muncy bullet with two runners on base.

This will be the last time these two teams will meet in San Francisco until the final three games of the 2023 season.

Thursday the Giants will have a day off before heading to Detroit for a three game series with the Tigers on Friday starting for San Francisco Sean Manaea (0-0, 4.50) and Detroit no starter has been announced. First pitch is scheduled for 3:40 PM at Comerica Park in Detroit.
