Los Angeles Angels pitcher Shohei Ohtani was a little shocked when the Oakland A’s reached him for five runs in the top of the fourth inning at the Big A in Anaheim on Thu Apr 27, 2023 (AP News photo)

On the A’s podcast with Daniel:

#1 Daniel, tough loss for Oakland on Thursday 8-7 by one run to Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Angels there was the thought that Ohtani would dominate the A’s line up but they got guys on and were able to score on him.

#2 The A’s picked up five runs on the fourth inning to cut it close, it would seem the A’s knew that had to get Ohtani, they had struggled in this series and wanted to at least try and end the series with a hard effort to get after Ohtani.

#3 The A’s have some future hitters in the their line up Brent Rooker went deep with a three run home run and catcher Shea Langeliers hit a two run homer in the fourth during that A’s five run rally.

#4 Shohei had one of his most off balanced games in recent memories and struggled against the last place A’s line up going six innings, giving up three hits on five runs, walked two batters, however Ohtani did strike out eight batters.

#5 The A’s open a three game series tonight against the Cincinnati Reds the A’s come off a tough road trip but hope to take advantage of home field. The Reds have been struggling losing six of their last ten games and are 10-15 coming into the Coliseum tonight.

Oakland A’s Commentary podcast with Len Shapiro: Will Giants claim East Bay as their territory when A’s leave?

San Francisco Giants CEO Larry Baer looks out from the stands at Oracle Park in San Francisco. Baer has been in the 24 hour news cycle for being responsible for tweeting how it’s a shame the A’s are leaving. The former Oakland A’s play by play announcer himself, Baer as Giants CEO played a role in blocking the A’s from moving to the South Bay in 2011 according to former A’s owner Lew Wolf and former San Jose Mayor Tom McEnery. (file photo from San Francisco Chronicle)

On the Oakland A’s Commentary podcast with Len Shaprio:

#1 As if the San Francisco Giants CEO Larry Baer hasn’t got enough blame in the last 48 hours for being a big part in the Oakland A’s leaving Oakland leaving a huge void in the East Bay will the Giants also claim Oakland and the East Bay their territory when the A’s leave Oakland so no team could either move or expand there?

#2 Baer received a lot of criticism in the media and on social media regarding the Giants tweeting this week saying that the “A’s are such a big part of Bay Area baseball history, the East Bay and the greater community.” Former A’s owner Lew Wolf called the tweet by the Giants “disingenuous” and that the Giants stopped the A’s from moving to San Jose by claiming their territorial rights in 2011 when the A’s wanted to build a new downtown stadium in San Jose.

#3 Len you and the late Joe Buerry were managing partners at the Oakland A’s radio affiliate 990 the KATD in Pittsburg and were with the station during the time when the Giants wanted to block the A’s from claiming territorial rights in the South Bay the city of San Jose took MLB to court to fight for territorial rights but the Supreme Court ruled that the Giants had those rights.

#4 Critics say that Baer should have done his due diligence like previous A’s owner Walter Haas did and agreed to give the Giants territorial right to keep the Giants in San Francisco or allow them to move to San Jose. The Giants never returned the territorial rights back to the A’s and even more Baer has fought to keep those right and enforced it to keep the A’s out of moving to San Jose.

#5 The big question is will Baer and the Giants claim the East Bay as their territory after the A’s move out of Oakland and to make sure that no MLB team can expand or do a relocation move to Oakland or the East Bay in the future to claim Northern California the Giants and only the Giants?

Len Shapiro was a former radio station assistant manager for Oakland A’s affiliate 990 KATD Pittsburg

SAN FRANCISCO–I’ve seen a few different versions of this remark, sometimes attributed to Bill McCullough of the defunct Brooklyn Eagle, but I’ve never been able to confirm it. Still, the assertion , “Overconfidence may cost the Dodgers sixth place” kept coming to my mind as I settled into my seat to watch this afternoon’s concluding episode of the four game series between the reawakening San Francisco Giants (11-13 at game time) and the visiting St. Louis Cardinals (9-16). My skepticism was justified; the Cards shut the Giants out, 6-0.

Logan Webb, whose recently signed five year, $90,000,000 1-1contract stands in stark contrast to his game time record of 1-1-4.40, had only one outing to his credit in the still young season, but that was his most recent one. It came five ago, here at Oracle Park on the 22nd,a 7-4 win over the Mets. In it he held them Mets to a pair of runs, both earned, over seven innings, in which he allowed five hits and threw 98 pitches.

Webb’s opposite number for St. Louis, Miles Mikolas, was an All Star last season but had been a disappointment – to say the least – so far in 2023. When he took the mound, he was leading the National League in hits allowed, was tied for first in runs allowed, had the second highest ERA among qualifying (if that’s the word) pitchers, and was tied for fourth place in home runs surrendered. That explains his game time mark of 0-1, 7.46.

Webb pitched himself out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the third, and Mikolas extricated himself from the same situation in the bottom of the fifth. Indeed, both starters had reason to endorse Lefty Gomez’s formula for success, clean living and a fast outfield.

That wasn’t enough to keep St. Louis off the board in the top of the seventh Wuth one one, Alec Burleson jumped on a two and two four seamer and drove it over the right field wall, 385 feet deep. The pitch came in at 92.9 mph and left Burleson’s bat at 102.3 mph. It was his third round tripper of the year. Webb never recovered from the blast. Paul DeJong and Tyler singled to right and both moved up a base on AndrewKnzner’s fly to left.

Loogan and the Giants might have avoided further damage when umpire and crew chief Paul Emmel called Tommy Edman out at first after he’d hit a grounder to Estrada at second to end the inning. But the Cards appealed the decision, and the review crew in New York correctly overturned it. John Brebbia left the bullpen and climbed the mound to get the final out.

Webb had done a credible job. He threw 102 pitches, 70 for strikes, over 6-2/3 innings and allowed two runs, both earned, on seven hits, one of them Burleson’s fatidic blast, and a walk. He struck out seven Redbirds. John Brebbia, who closed out the seventh and, in conjunction with Tristan Beck, let the game get out of hand in the eighth.

With Norman Gorman on first and one out, Dylan Carlson hit an RBI double to left that sent Brebbia to the showers. His replacement, Tristan Beck, promptly surrendered a four bagger to left by Paul DeJong, his second of the year. It now was St. Louis on top, 5-0.

Meanwhile, Mikolas, after fanning Villar to open the home seventh, was replace by Génesis Cabrera. The Cards’ starter had thrown 6-1/3 frames of shutout ball and allowed four hits, surrendered two free passes, and hit a batter. He threw 95 pitches, 65 for strikes.

When it rains, it pours, or at least drizzles, even on a sunny day on the shores of McCovey Cove. With Beck still on the mound,, Edman led off the visitors’ ninth with a double to right, went to third on Nootbaars’s infield hit, and scored on Goldschmidt’s 5-4 RBI force out.

Drew Ver Hagen set San Francisco down in order in the bottom of the ninth to preserve preserve the Redbird win.

Mikolas, now 1-1, 5.97; Webb, now 1-5, 4.1o, the loss.

The Giants’ next game will be Saturday, the 29th, in Mexico City , where they’ll play a two game series with the San Diego Padres, starting at 3:05 PDT. The pitchers for the first game will be Sean Manaea (0-1,6.61) for the Giants and Joe Musgrove (1-0, 5.40) for the Friars.

Oakland A’s podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: Can A’s have a break out game against Angels or will it be Sho Time all over again?

On the A’s podcast with Jerry F:

#1 Another rough night on the mound for the Oakland A’s (5-20) and their group of pitchers as the Los Angeles Angels (13-12) rock the A’s at the Big A in Anaheim 11-3.

#2 Also when one of the pitchers on the staff who was expected to do some big things was demoted back to triple A Las Vegas A’s pitcher James Kaprielian struggled pitching with an 0-2 ERA 12.94.

#3 The A’s who promoted Luis Medina wasted no time getting him a start he faced the Angels on Wednesday night pitching five innings, giving up eight hits, and seven earned runs. Watching him pitch was it a matter of there was more to work on or he was just getting teed up by LA?

#4 A’s pitcher Shintaro Fujinami was had been lit up in his last few starts was demoted to the relief role and came into relieve starter Medina and did relatively better in the role going two plus innings, with two hits, one walk and three strike outs.

#5 Takin a look at the starting pitchers for Thursday’s matinee at the Big A, for the A’s JP Sears (0-1, ERA 4.98) for the Angels Shohei Ohtani (3-0, ERA 0.64) Sho Time is having a successful time in his starts how do you see the A’s coming out on this one today?

By Michael Roberson

SACRAMENTO–The Sacramento Kings lost control and home-court advantage of the NBA Western Conference Quarterfinals with a 123-116 loss to the Golden State Warriors.

Warriors Beat Kings For the First Road Win of This Series 123-116

By Barbara Mason

Head Coach Steve Kerr was having no part of the statistics that teams that win game five in a series go on to win the series. The Golden State Warriors (44-38) will concentrate on protecting the ball and defensive rebounds as they take on the Sacramento Kings (48-34) in game five of their series at Golden One Center. The Warriors improved their series record to 3-2 with a 123-116 win on Wednesday night in Sacramento.

All eyes were on the injured De’Aaron Fox as he took the court after breaking his left index finger in the fourth quarter of game four. He was sporting a protective splint and the question remained, how will this affect not only his dribbling but his shooting. We got that answer the first quarter of the game.

After the first 12 minutes of play, the Kings led by a slim margin 36-33 after leading by as much as ten during the quarter. Any concerns regarding Fox were laid to rest when he hit three shots from downtown and finished the first quarter with 11 points.

With 3:54 left in the second quarter the Warriors tied up the game at 50 when Klay Thompson hit his third triple of the game. Both Andrew Wiggins and Thompson had four personal fouls. Thompson had the hot hand in the first half with 16 points. The Kings Fox had the high for the team with 17 points. At the half the Warriors led 60-56.

The Warriors turned this game in their favor in the third quarter leading 99-90. It would all come down to the fourth quarter to reveal who would take the series lead back to Chase Friday night.

The Kings fought back and with 1:11 left in the game trailed 117-114. Sacramento could not get over the hump. The Warriors playoff experienced trumped when all was said and done. It was the Warriors by eight 122-114 with 22.4 left in the game and Golden State could smell their first road win of this series.

Stephen Curry finished the game with 31 points. He moved past Magic Johnson for 15th on the all- time playoff scoring list in this game. Thompson had 25 points and Draymond Green was amazing with 21 points. The last time Green scored 20 points in a game was 2019 against the Rockets. Kevon Looney had an amazing 22 rebounds.

Despite playing with a broken finger, Fox finished with 24 points. Domantas Sabonis had 21 points as did Malik Monk off the bench.

Friday night the Warriors will take the series back to Chase Center. They will be looking to close out this series now leading 3-2. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:00 PM.

Giants Win 7-3 secure 5th Win In A Row Against Cardinals at Oracle Park

San Francisco Giants’ Blake Sabol strikes out against the St. Louis Cardinals during the third inning at Oracle Park in San Francisco on Wed Apr 26, 2023 (AP News photo)

By Troy Ewers

SAN FRANCISCO–As the sunset in San Francisco on Wednesday night, it was the Giants against the Cardinals in Oracle Park and Tuesday night’s heroics from Blake Sabol were fresh in fans’ minds as they walked in the ballpark. As the Giants picked up their fifth straight win over the Cards 7-3 on Wednesday night.

The starters were Anthony DeSclafani and Steven Matz and this game started with a bang and Giants fans thought maybe the clock had struck midnight on their luck as Paul Goldschmidt made a big statement with his first two at bats as he had two big solo home runs which put the Cards up 2-0 to early in the night, but the very next inning for San Francisco was where we would see a spark of light as Austin Slater’s RBI single made it 2-1 Cards.

That spark of light was all the Giants needed to get back to how they looked the first two games this series. A home run that same inning from Lamonte Wade Jr. would be the mighty equalizer and the G-Men wouldn’t look back the whole game.

A wild pitch in the fifth would bring in Haniger for the go ahead run, two run home run by Wilmer Flores electrified Oracle Park in the seventh, and finally the Giants would put the nail in the coffin as Conforto and Wade Jr. would secure huge RBIs that sealed the deal in front of 21,748 Oracle fans.

There were some scary moments as a run from the Cardinals in the ninth had the fans holding their breath, but once Camillo Doval saw the mound, SF could exhale as they walked away with a big win. Making it five in a row for SF.

The Giants look to close out the series against St, Louis tomorrow and then it’s off to Mexico City for a two game series against the Padres. Starting pitchers for Thursday afternoon St Louis Miles Mikolas (0-1 ERA 7.46) and for San Francisco Logan Webb (1-4, ERA 4.40) first pitch at Oracle Park in San Francisco 12:45pm PDT.

Oakland Roots Lose To Sacramento Republic FC 1-0 In Third Round Of U.S. Open Cup

By Troy Ewers

On a night where another NorCal battle between the Warriors and Kings is taking place in California’s capital, they have a similar battle between the Oakland Roots and Sacramento Republic FC in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup that ended up in a 1-0 Sacramento Republic FC win. This game started with a complete defensive stalemate of a first half, no shots on goal recorded for either team.

The only major moment of the first half was Roots forward Hacksaw. First half ending at 0-0. The second half was different strategy for Sacramento, where it was clear they had one move, attack the back line of Oakland and shoot the ball, but the only shot on goal was from Nicholas Ross of Sacramento where he scored a deep shot to the center of the goal past Blanchette and that would break the stalemate and would be the only goal of the game.

Sacramento the whole second half was changing out their players and slowing the pace which lessened any chance of a comeback for Oakland. While this was a loss for the Roots, their sites are set on Saturday against Miami for another USL Championship matchup.

This loss may mean Roots are out of U.S. Open Cup, but it should be a wake up call to the Oakland dressing room, that the way they won games so far this season was by attacking early and making the opposing team have to play at Oakland’s pace, which is fast and the passes are deep. Still a long season, but the adjustments need to be made now or it will be a long season for other reasons.

Headline Sports podcast with Jessica Kwong: Did Jets give up too much to get Rogers?; Bucs sign Reynolds to $100.6 M deal; plus more

There is no more passing the football around in the Frozen Tundra for former Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rogers as he signs on with the New York Jets. Rogers had made it clear he was ready for a change of scenery and is relieved to be going to New York (AP News file photo)

On Headline Sports podcast with Jessica:

#1 Jessica, we lead off the program with the New York Jets and their acquisition of quarterback Aaron Rogers. Jets general manager Joe Douglas said that getting Rogers was historic for the franchise but critics are questioning at what price the Jets had to fork up a 2023 second round pick, 2024 conditional second rounder that will increase to a first rounder if Rogers participates in 65% of the regular season. Is it worth it Douglas seems to think so.

#2 The Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Bryan Reynolds got a rich eight year deal worth $106.5 million. The deal for Reynolds is the richest in Pirates history. Before signing Reynolds the Bucs were one of four big league franchises who had not signed a player for $100 million and over. The Kansas City Royals, Oakland A’s and Chicago White Sox remain the only teams who have not signed a $100 million player.

#3 New York Mets star pitcher Justin Verlander is reportedly on target to return May 3rd. Verlander has been injured since spring training and will make a rehab start this coming Friday. Verlander is recovering from a low-grade teres major strain. Verlander said it’s been frustrating but was told that his time will come and he’s just a week away.

#4 Jessica, it seems that Los Angeles Angels Mike Trout memorabilia especially from his rookie year is through the roof his 2009 Red Refractor card sold for $1 million. Turns out a Mike Trout signed little league ball went to auction and sold for $15,600. Trout’s uncle Kevin had the ball for two decades. Trout signed the ball when he was 12 years old. Uncle Kevin says if your kid is in Little League and makes it big in the big leagues get him to sign the ball now.

#5 New York Rangers head coach Gerard Gallant says the Rangers simply didn’t show up during Monday’s game on home ice at Madison Square Garden losing to the New Jersey Devils 3-1 and now tied with New Jersey at 2-2 in the series. Gerard referenced the offense scored only one goal through three period and it was the third and last period when they got on the scoreboard. On defense the Devils scored twice in the third period on Devils goaltender Akira Schmid who faced 23 shots.
