OAKLAND–It ended on a Sunday afternoon in Seattle, the Oakland A’s run since 1968. The Seattle Mariners beat the Oakland A’s (last time we can say Oakland A’s): Seattle 6, Oakland 4. It has been an emotional hangover for most of us who worked at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.

I do feel like I have been “evicted” for no fault of my own, and I know many feel the same way. I have been there from the Charlie O Finley ownership[ days to Joh Fisher’s days}. I met Mr. Finley, but never A’s owner Mr. Fisher.

I started broadcasting Major League Baseball at old Box 19, a broadcast booth at the Oakland Coliseum, in 1978. It has been a long time since then. In 1978, the NY Yankees beat the LA Dodgers in the World Series, and Bucky Dent was the MVP.

The highest-paid player in 1978 was third baseman Mike Schmidt of the Philadelphia Phillies, who earned $560,000.The US turned the Panamá Canal to Panamá. Louise Brown became the first human born from in vitro fertilization, and the average gas price in the United States was .70 cents per gallon.

But back to the Oakland Coliseum. A’s Manager Mark Kotsay and his players were a “class act” playing during a difficult season, not because they were trying not to finish last, they did not. They looked like a team that could be a .500 team starting next season, but because of all the circumstances with the team moving to Las Vegas, with an expected stop in Sacramento.

This time in history is not like it was back in 1978 when everybody got their news from three television Networks and a couple of local stations (no 500-plus cable channels like today). In the Bay Area, the San Francisco Chronicle, San Francisco Examiner, Oakland Tribune, and San José Mercury News were mostly our daily sources of information. That was when people actually read whole newspaper articles, not just a big-fat headline on YouTube.

Today, everybody has a cell phone in their pockets (including the players), and rumors, fake news, and innuendo move faster than the wind at old Candlestick Park in San Francisco during batting practice around 5 PM. As I remember, this includes the games during the Loma Prieta Earthquake in 1989.

I do not have an exact count of the many days, afternoons, and nights that I spend at the Oakland Coliseum, but I have called it “my second home” since the 1970s in the business. I not only called games on the radio but also covered games. In the 1980s, I broadcast games for Telemundo CH 48 San José, which was first a tiny station but is now part of NBC Universal.

No matter how you analyze the Oakland Athletics story, it is sad, and I, for one, feel like I was evicted from the Coliseum.

49ers Take Care of Business Beating Patriots 30-13; Two game skid comes to an end

After a couple of disappointing losses the San Francisco 49ers (2-2) worked their way through the recent injuries they have suffered beating the New England Patriots (1-3) in week four of the season 30-13 at Levi Stadium.

One of the outstanding players in this game continues to be Jordan Mason who in the absence of Christian McCaffrey has done a bang-up job. He finished this game with 123 rushing yards and 37 receiving yards on two catches.

He continues to impress. There is still no timeline for the return of McCaffrey although he is targeting an early November return after receiving some treatment in Germany that went extremely well.

Game recap: There was a lot of action for San Francisco kicker Jake Moody who scored the only six points of the opening quarter. Those two kicks came at the end of the first quarter. With 2:26 left on the clock, Moody kicked a short 22 yard field goal for the early 3-0 lead. Minutes later he kicked his second of the game, a 26 yard field goal and San Francisco took a 6-0 lead into the second quarter.

The 49ers were looking for some touchdowns as the second quarter got underway and they didn’t have to wait long. A minute into the second quarter Fred Warner returned an interception for San Francisco’s first touchdown of the game.

The extra point was good and the 49ers led 13-0 at 14:01. With 3:11 left in the half, the newly returned George Kittle caught a Brock Purdy pass for 12 yards, the touchdown and San Francisco was on a roll.

The Moody kick was good and the 49ers led 20-0. The Bucs would get on the scoreboard as the clock ran out on the first half. New England’s kicker Joey Slye kicked an amazing 63 yard field goal. The score at the half was 20-3 with San Francisco calling the shots in this game.

The Patriots got a far different start in the second half than the first. Quarterback Jacoby Brissett drove his team downfield in the third quarter culminating with a 5 yard pass to Austin Hooper for the touchdown.

The kick was good and this was a 20-10 game and it was hard not to look back at last week’s game where the 49ers gave up a double-digit lead. Not about to go there this week San Francisco’s next possession was textbook perfect.

Brock Purdy connected with Deebo Samuel for 53 yards down to the New England 17. Purdy followed that up with a short pass to Jordan Mason for 13 yards and Mason would finish up the drive with a four yard romp into the end zone for the touchdown.

Mason has been doing a spectacular job in the absence of Christian McCaffrey. San Francisco had taken a 27-10 lead turning this game back around in favor of the 49ers. The Patriots were unable to move the ball on their next possession and San Francisco had taken back control of this game.

We saw some great play from Brock Purdy in the fourth quarter. A ridiculous throw at 13:26 coupled with an unbelievable catch and the Purdy Jennings connection was working in the final quarter of this game, a pass for 45 yards.

San Francisco drove down to the New England 23 yard line but the Patriots intercepted a Purdy pass intended for Brandon Aiyuk on their own two yard line. New England had a little life and some decent time on the clock.

The 49ers defense had made life pretty miserable for Patriot quarterback Jacoby Brissett registering their fifth sack this one at the hands of Nick Bosa. The life that the Patriots felt after the interception was quickly snuffed out thanks to Bosa and the San Francisco defense.

With 4:58 left in the fourth quarter the 49ers extended their lead to 30-13. Jake Moody kicked his third field goal of the game for 41 yards and he had been perfect all day. The final score was 30-13 and San Francisco celebrated a great game, a great win.

The Niner defense stepped up big, and the offense had a banner day. Brock Purdy finished with 288 yards and a touchdown. Jordan Mason had another amazing game with 123 rushing yards on 24 carries. He also had a couple of catches for 37 yards.

When Christian McCaffrey returns to the field San Francisco could have some of the most dangerous weapons on the ground in the league. The San Francisco receiving core was on point. Jauan Jennings had three catches for 88 yards, Deebo Samuel also three catches for 58 yards, Bandon Aiyuk three catches for 48 yards and George Kittle four catches for 45 yards.

San Francisco now has a 2-2 record after a rough patch. They have worked through it and despite still missing a huge offensive weapon in Christian McCaffrey they are now on track. They did have three fumbles today recovering two of them.

That will not work against an elite team but they got away with it today. The defense finished with six sacks, 66 total tackles 40 of them solo; that’s some great defensive work. They handed the Patriots their third loss of the season.

Game notes: Sunday afternoon, the 49ers defeated the New England Patriots at Levi Stadium. After dropping their last two games; last week to the Los Angeles Rams who rallied from a double-digit deficit to win the game 27-24, and the week before that they lost to the Minnesota Vikings 23-17.

The 49ers avoided losing a third game in a row, especially a game that they have no business losing. Yes they have been hampered with injuries but Deebo Samuel and George Kittle are back on the field again for this game.

Next week the 49ers will take on the Arizona Cardinals at Levi Stadium looking for their third win of the season. The Cardinals are struggling with losses to the Bills, the Lions and the Commanders.

Their only win this season was a rout of the Rams in week two 41-10. Cardinal quarterback Kyler Murray has had some disappointing games. Kickoff for this game next Sunday is scheduled for 1:05 PM and can be viewed on FOX TV.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — The San Francisco Giants (80-82) finished the 2024 season on a sour note, by losing the last game 6-1 and series (2-1) of the year to the St. Louis Cardinals (83-79) in front of 32, 248 disappointed fans, Sunday Afternoon by the Bay at Oracle Park.

On a Noon start time and a pleasant 62 degrees in the City. the Giants were aiming to win the series and achieve the safe .500 status. However, the 6-1 loss put their record to two games below .500. at 80-82, instead of 81-81.

“Regardless of what our record was, it would have been disappointing, based on what we felt the team was all about at the beginning of the season.” Stated Giants Manager Bob Melvin about not reaching .500. “Either if it were 81-81 or 80-82 it still was not going to feel much better, regardless.”

The game itself got off to a slow start, as no one scored until the third inning. Unfortunately that happened to be the road team from the Midwest. The Cardinals went up 1-0 off the bat of second baseman Brendan Donovan, as he belted a solo home run to right field, near McCovey Cove.

Two innings later, Donovan was at it again as a run producer. This at bat he hit an RBI single, scoring shortstop Thomas Saggese. The Cardinals temporarily led 2-0. Then left fielder Alec Burleson duplicated the previous feat with his own RBI single. He plated Pedro Peges, putting them up 3-0 after 5 innings of play.

In the top of the sixth stanza, St. Louis decided to double their score, while still simultaneously shutting out the Giants. Third baseman Jose Fermin continued the RBI single barrage by knocking in outfielder Michael Siani, expanding the lead to four.

Burleson repeated his last plate appearance with–you guessed it–another RBI single; however, this line drive scored two runners (Jordan Walker & Fermin). The Birds from the LOU were up a whopping 6-0 at that juncture of the game.

The Giants did show enough pride to prevent an embarrassing shutout at the Oracle Park Finale in the bottom of the seventh inning, second baseman Brett Wisely was on the other end of the ever so common RBI single. His hit brought in infielder Casey Schmitt, eliminating the Goose Egg the Giants were facing as season’s end.

After seven innings, San Francisco was finally on the scoreboard and had two innings to mount a dramatic final comeback. That did not come to fruition, so the Giants had to settle for a 6-1 loss, and the distinction of finishing the season below the magic .550 line. This imaginary line delineates a winning or non-winning season in all sports.

That’s a WRAP for the 2024 MLB season for the two Bay Area teams. In the 2025 season, the Giants will have the nine county region all to themselves, as the the now former cross-Bay neighboring Oakland Athletics, will be relocating to the State Capital city of Sacramento, with the final destination being in Las Vegas in 2028 with their former roommate, the Raiders.

Oshoala come through again for Bay FC defeat Seattle in 1-0 shutout at Pay Pal Park

SAN JOSE–Bay FC is back on the road, this time they were in the Pacific Northwest to take on the Seattle Reign who have massively underperformed this season after making it to the NWSL Final last season. Meanwhile Bay FC is currently sitting in 9th place in the NWSL, even on points with Racing Louisville but outside of the final playoff spot due to goal differential.

A win would make them the sole team in eighth place. With Alyssa Malonson out with injury, Maddie Moreau started at left-back while Penelope Hocking took Rachel Hill’s spot in the starting line up for her first start with Bay FC. Asisat Oshoala scored the game’s only goal in the 27th minute to help defeat the Seattle Reign at Pay Pal Park in San Jose on Sunday.

Bay FC Starting XI: Rowland, Moreau, Dahlkemper, Menges, Dydasco, Boade, Bailey, Pickett, Oshoala, Kundananji, Hocking

Seattle Starting XI: Dickey, Latsko, McClernon, Barnes, Glas, Athens, Quinn, So-Yun, Crnogorcevic, Huitema, King

The game started off with back-and-forth end-to-end action but neither team was able to generate quality scoring chances. Seattle got a couple of corners early in the first half, but were unable to create anything from the set pieces.

Afterwards, Bay FC had a couple of corners of their own but they weren’t able to take advantage either. Lauren Barnes went down for Seattle in the 22nd minute and Seattle initially signaled for a substitution, but waited to see if Barnes could continue. Moments later Asisat Oshoala was taken out inside of the box by Phoebe McClernon.

Oshoala was awarded a penalty, and despite some protests of offside by Seattle, the call remained the same. She’d convert on the penalty, scoring her sixth of the season and making it 1-0 for Bay. Quinn nearly tied it around the half hour mark, but Katelyn Rowland made a save, tipping it over the crossbar.

McClernon gave away the ball to Rachael Kundananji in her own box, handing Bay FC a dangerous opportunity but she was unable to convert. Kundananji did go down following the play with an apparent knee injury, but remained in the game.

Kundananji took another knock in the 42nd minute when her and a Reign player both went up for a header and both made contact with one another’s heads. She quickly returned to the game. Kundananji had another quality chance off of a pass from Oshoala in stoppage time, but Dickey made the save.

Tess Boade was involved heavily in the play as well, starting the whole process. Maddie Moreau fired a late shot as well, it was saved right before the final whistle blew to end the first half.

Barnes was taken off for Jordyn Bugg to start the second half for Seattle. The Reign appealed for a penalty when a shot deflected off of Abby Dahlkemper’s arm, but her hands were clasped behind her back, making it impossible for her to do any more to prevent a handball.

A few minutes later, Kundananji had an opportunity to make it 2-0. A pass to Hocking would’ve allowed for an easy tap-in, but instead Kundananji took a shot which went wide of the goal. After that play, Hocking was replaced by Hill. Caprice Dydasco was shown the game’s first yellow card in the 58th minute.

Oshoala went down momentarily after that, but remained in the match. Dahlkemper was having a fantastic game defensively, blocking quite a few shots over the course of the night. Even though Seattle had a dominant lead in possession, they weren’t getting any quality chances as they were spending a majority of their time in the defensive zone since Bay FC didn’t allow them to create any offense.

Besides the one chance early, Rowland didn’t have much action over the course of the match, at least not until late. Seattle got their second shot on target of the night in the 85th minute, but it went directly to the goalkeeper.

They applied a bit more pressure on Bay FC’s defense heading into extra time. Oshoala got behind the defense in the 95th minute, but she was taken down inside the ball and not awarded a penalty. Despite a late push by Seattle, Bay FC was able to hang on to win 1-0.

For the final time, the name “Oakland” appeared on the visiting uniform of the Athletics Sunday at T-Mobile Park in Seattle. The A’s lost the 2024 season finale 6-4 to the Mariners.

For the next three seasons, the Athletics will only be identified with their nickname as they play at their temporary home, Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento. The A’s finished their final season in the East Bay 69-93.

A charter member of the American League, the Athletics called Philadelphia home from 1901-1954. They resided in Kansas City from 1955-67 before owner Charles O. Finley moved the A’s to Oakland in 1968.

Mariners starter Logan Gilbert (9-12) was perfect for 5 2/3 innings, and Cal Raleigh belted a two-run home run to spark the Mariners’ victory. Gilbert struck out seven while ending the season with 208 2/3 innings to lead all of MLB – the first Seattle pitcher to do so.

Raleigh’s homer capped a four-run Mariners rally in the fifth inning, giving him 93 for his career – the most by a cancer in their first four seasons. He passed Mike Piazza on the list, and finished the season with 100 runs batted in – the first Seattle catcher to reach that plateau.

Justin Turner had a two-run single for Seattle and teammates Victor Robles and Julio Rodríguez added RBI base hits, as the Mariners finished 85-77.

Oakland starter Mitch Spence (8-10) gave up all six runs on seven hits while striking out five without a walk. Joe Boyle and Kyle Muller combined to throw 3 2/3 shutout innings in relief.

Tyler Nevin’s two-run double in the seventh put the A’s on the board, and Darell Hernaiz had a two-run double for Oakland in the top of the ninth.

There was a contingent of A’s fans who were part of the announced attendance of 42,177, often chanting “Let’s Go Oakland.” Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson threw the ceremonial first pitch wearing a half-A’s/half-Mariners jersey – Henderson spent most of his career with the A’s and played part of 2000 with Seattle.

#1 Rich, the Cleveland Browns opened up the first quarter against the Las Vegas Raiders Deshaun Watson for one yard pass to Blake Whiteheart. The Browns kicker Dustin Hopkins later hit a 56 yard field goal and it was 10-0.

#2 Raiders would answer back with when running back Tre Tucker would carry a three yarder for a touchdown and Daniel Carlson later would boot a 52 yarder to tie it up at half time 10-10.

#3 The Raiders would add on more scoring in the third quarter when Carlson kicked a 34 yarder for a field goal and DJ Turner carried for 18 yards putting the Raiders on top by ten 20-10.

#4 Fourth quarter the Raiders were able to hold off the Browns. The Browns recovered a Raiders fumble as the Browns Rodney McCleod ran it back 25 yards to cut the Raiders lead 20-16 as kicker Dustin Hopkins missed the extra point.

#5 Up next for the Raiders the Denver Broncos who just got by the New York Jets at Giants Stadium in the Meadowlands Sunday 10-9 in a well played defensive game. Broncos quarterback Bo Nix threw 12 for 25 for 60 yards and one touchdown in the Denver win. This one will be in Denver next Sun Oct 6th. Your thoughts for these two teams.

Liberty Prove Too Hot to Handle In Game One of Series As Aces Fall 87-77

The Las Vegas Aces (27-13) got within two points of the New York Liberty (32-8) in the second quarter but that’s as close as they would get falling in the first game of their best of five series 87-77.

A’Ja Wilson finished the game with 21 points but it was Kelsey Plum with the team high scoring 24 points. The Aces have the unenviable task of trying to contain Breanna Stewart throughout this series. Stewart finished with 34 points.

Game recap: The New York Liberty got right down to business in the opening quarter leading after the first ten minutes of play 28-21. As the clock began to wind down on the second quarter the Liberty began to push their lead out after leading by only two points at the five minute mark.

New York led by ten points 46-34 with 1:10 left in the first half going on a 9-0 run. At halftime the Liberty had maintained their ten point lead 48-38 and Las Vegas had a lot of work to do in the second half. They were missing far too many shots and they had to find a way to contain Breanna Stewart who finished the first half with 20 points.

This is the series that one would expect to see in the finals. The struggles that the Aces had in the first part of the season had a lot to do with how these matchups look today. Las Vegas is known to be a second half team and they will need to show up in this one.

Stealing a game in New York is exactly what the Aces will be looking to do. Plum succeeded in the first half making quick decisions because of the defensive pressure that the Liberty were bringing. Las Vegas had some catching up to do in the third quarter but they have the talent to do just that.

New York continued to extend their lead in the third quarter and Las Vegas continued with spotty shooting. At 7:43 the Liberty led 55-40 and New York was dictating the pace of this game continuing to pile on the points. At 5:46 they led 62-44 totally dominating the Aces.

Plum continued her intensive play verbally sparring with Spike Lee who shouted at her from the sidelines only getting her even more heated up. Play took a turn with Las Vegas going on a 12-0 run pulling to within six points after trailing by 18.

Las Vegas just did not have the defensive answer for Stewart and this was glaring throughout the game. As the third quarter came to an end the Aces had cut the Liberty’s 18 point lead in half. New York was up nine 71-62 going into the fourth quarter.

With 28 points, Stewart sat out the start of the fourth quarter with four fouls. The Liberty continued to clog up the paint and Las Vegas was struggling to be able to make those inside shots that have made them so successful.

New York was hitting from inside, from outside, making ridiculous long shots. There was no stopping them today. The Liberty took full advantage of the turnovers, missed shots and defensive ineffectiveness that the Aces brought winning the first game of the series 87-77.

Game notes: Sunday afternoon the Aces lost the first game in their best of a five game series against the Liberty in what promises to be a incredibly intense, competitive and exciting series. The reigning champions Aces could be pushed to the brink in this series if the Liberty put up a tough battle throughout.

If the Aces want to win another title, they will have to beat the best and right now the Liberty are the number one team in basketball. The New York starting roster is loaded with Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu, Jonquel Jones and they are primed and have tested the Aces.

On the other hand the Aces starting roster are no pushover with the amazing A’Ja Wilson, Kelsey Plum, Jackie Young and Chelseas Gray. Las Vegas also has Alysha Clark and Tiffany Hayes who have been invaluable off the bench. This is going to be one crazy series.

While this is only the beginning, the Aces have a lot to figure out going into game two. Putting the stops on Stewart (34 points) and Ionescu (21 points) will be a tough call. When the Aces went on runs, the Liberty put a stop to it every time.

New York is hungry for their first championship and you can see it in their play. Game two is scheduled to tipoff in New York Tuesday evening the time still to be determined.

On the San Francisco Giants and Oakland A’s 2024 season wrap up with Stephen Ruderman:

San Francisco Giants: After a mediocre 2024 season it’s the hope for the San Francisco Giants that they’ll be better. The status regarding Giants team president Farhan Zaidi is yet to be determined and most likely it will be figured Monday. Zaidi was signed to an extension last season but he’s been very much been on the hot seat this season.

The Giants didn’t want him to be a lame duck, they didn’t want him to negotiate with free agents and the Giants have failed to make the playoffs and they failed to finish over .500 finishing 2024 80-82 losing their last game of the season on Sunday 6-1.

Farhan is a very smart guy he had his weird successes he started in 2019-2022. He’s had a hard time managing the day to day operations he’s a new age guy and you don’t let the new age guys run the show and hopefully that will be announced on Monday.

Sacramento A’s: Regarding the A’s move to Sacramento an artificial turf expert said went on Friday’s show and said temperatures can range from 160-180 degrees on the field at Sutter Health Park. Now the Players Association they cannot veto the Sacramento move.

However, the MLBPA to the conditions and they could kind of defacto veto it and not agree to the conditions. The way it’s set up the players will not be able to play on natural grass. One rumor is that the Giants minor league team the Rivercats would go to Fresno but good luck with that and they would have to put artificial turf in Fresno.

#1 The Clemson Tigers struggled early on to get on the scoreboard Saturday but later in the first quarter they were able to put ten points up and come away with a 10-0 lead after the first quarter.

#2 Clemson cornerback Avieon Terrell shrugged off that early struggle and said they were confident in what they had to do in first half.

#3 For Stanford the defense gave up four touchdowns as the Tigers quarterback Cade Klubnik had plenty of protection and time to throw.

#4 Stanford quarterback Austin Daniels threw 9-19, 71 yards, and had one touchdown and had three interceptions.

#5 The Cardinal face Virginia Tech who lost their last game 38-34 to Miami Florida. The Hokies are 2-3 and this one is at Stanford Stadium this Saturday for a 12:30pm PT kick off.
