SAN FRANCISCO – The Bronx Bombers came out swinging into 2026 deflating the sellout crowd at 3rd and King. Eight of the nine in the New York lineup recorded a hit lighting up a seven in the run column. Tony Vitello started his Major League managerial career on the wrong end of a 7-0 blowout on Opening Night.

Wednesday night at Oracle Park marked the start of the Giants’ 69th season in San Francisco and potentially the most unique and exciting. New energy runs through the city with first-year manager Tony Vitello taking the reins of a Giants team that underperformed in 2025. Vitello was hired in late October from the University of Tennessee, becoming the first ever Major League manager without any kind of professional experience. He put Tennessee baseball on the map by transforming the program into a national contender every year. With the additions of three-time batting champion Luis Arraez at the top of the order, a speedy Harrison Bader in the outfield and two more reliable arms in the rotation (Tyler Mahle and Adrian Houser), the G-Men aim to end losing ways and make the postseason for the first time since their spectacular 2021 season (107-55).

Red, white, and blue confetti swirled in the breeze and the celebratory opening night festivities concluded with a flyover by the 144th Fighter Wing. Oracle Park was alive for the first time since September. Right after Tony Vitello finished his first official plate meeting as a big league manager, Logan Webb led the Giants to the field.

Webb missed most of Spring Training to pitch for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic. During the tournament he pitched in two exciting wins for the Stars and Stripes, finishing 2-0 with a 1.04 ERA and 11 strikeouts. In the cactus league, Webb was also 2-0 but had a 6.75 ERA in just 9.1 innings pitched. In his last outing in Arizona he worked his pitch count up to 86 but allowed six runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings.

Webb started off on the right foot and the first pitch in MLB of 2026 was a strike, one of three to send Trent Grisham packing to start the ballgame. Webb struck out his Team USA teammate Aaron Judge for the second out and Heliot Ramos made a catch in shallow left field to cap off a scoreless first frame. Ramos got the start in left field Wednesday, putting an end to the Giants’ 19 year streak of starting a different left fielder on Opening Day.

In the home first Luis Arraez walked in his first at-bat as a Giant, eventually getting thrown out at second base on a fielder’s choice. Matt Chapman beat the throw to first base bringing up Rafael Devers with one out. Devers blooped a ball into shallow center field that fell for a hit advancing Chapman to third base. The clean-up hitter, Willy Adames struck out with runners at the corners and Jung Hoo Lee grounded out to Yankee second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. to put an end to the Giants threat.

The Giants only had two hits from that point on, failing to get any sort of offensive momentum against Max Fried and the rest of the New York pitchers who threw in Wednesday’s game including former Giant Camilo Doval. The Giants’ three hits on Opening Night were the fewest in a season-opener since April 12, 1965.

Luis Arraez recorded one of the three hits with an eighth inning single to extend his hitting streak to 16 games, which started on September 10, 2025.

The Yankees had the complete opposite night on offense, tagging Giants pitching for seven runs on 10 hits. The Bronx Bombers teed off in the second inning putting up five runs to put the game out of reach early. Giancarlo Stanton singled with one out and Jazz Chisholm Jr. got hit by a pitch allowing the Yankees to get on a roll.

Jose Caballero drove in Stanton on an RBI double and Ryan McMahon followed up with a single up the middle that scored Chisholm and Caballero. Trent Grisham tripled after an Austin Wells single that brought home McMahon and Wells. Finally Webb struck out Judge and Bellinger to put an end to the damaging inning.

The only Yankee in the starting lineup to go without a hit on Wednesday was Aaron Judge, who went 0-for-5 while striking out four times. Judge became the first reigning MVP to strike out four times on the following opening day. Logan Webb accounted for three of those strikeouts but “couldn’t care less” about them after a displeasing outing.

New York tacked on two more in the fifth to put a cherry on top of a 7-0 victory to start 2026.

Simply put Tony Vitello said “A more competitive effort would’ve been better”. The Yankees took advantage of Giants mistakes and capitalized with runners in scoring position. The Giants had just two runners in scoring position all night.

In college baseball, the mentality is all about winning a series and the Giants have the opportunity to do just that this weekend at Oracle Park. Robbie Ray will be on the hill for the orange and black Friday afternoon on Opening Day. First pitch is at 1:35pm.

Utah Mammoth game wrap: Mammoth Flattened By Oilers In 5-2 Beatdown

Edmonton Oilers Connor McDavid (97) takes the puck up the ice against the Utah Mammoth center Nick Schmaltz (8) in the first period at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City on Sat Mar 24, 2026 (AP News photo)

By Tom Walker

SALT LAKE CITY–The Edmonton Oilers capitalized 5-2 on a sloppy Utah Mammoth performance with Connor McDavid picking up his 39th and 40th goals, and 400th in his career, in a game which was never really contested.

The Mammoth (37-28-6) squared off against the Oilers (34-28-9) at Delta Center on Tuesday night for the third of four games on the current homestand. The Oilers entered the matchup as one of just two NHL teams which Utah has never defeated, the other being the Dallas Stars.

At 11:12 of the first period, Utah forward Alexander Kerfoot kicked off the scoring with his third goal of the season, technically assisted by Sean Durzi and Ian Cole, but his drive ricocheted off the bodies of Edmonton defensemen Darnell Nurse and Connor Murphy before sailing like a knuckleball over the shoulder of a helpless Tristan Jarry in the Oilers net who couldn’t keep up with the rapid fire changes of puck direction.

Jack Roslovic evened things up a few minutes later when his wrist shot got past Karel Vejmelka for his 18th goal of the season, assisted by Jake Walman and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, resulting in a 1-1 tie as the two squads entered their locker rooms. Jarry stopped 2-3 Mammoth shots in the frame, while Vejmelka turned away 7-8.

11 minutes into the second period, Edmonton forward Zach Hyman gave Utah the first power play opportunity of the game, going to the penalty box for high-sticking against Clayton Keller. Hyman’s teammate Matt Savoie bailed him out, scoring a short-handed goal 24 seconds later, his 12th of the season assisted by Evan Bouchard, to put the Oilers ahead 2-1.

35 seconds later, Utah Assistant Captain Lawson Crouse cashed in on the power play with his 20th goal of the season, the fourth time he has reached this milestone in his career, assisted by Michael Carcone and MacKenzie Weegar, evening things up 2-2.

That lasted all of eight seconds when Connor McDavid won the ensuing faceoff and then scored his 39th goal, and 400th of his career, assisted by Matthias Ekholm and Evan Bouchard. The Oilers continued to step on the gas, with Roslovic netting his second goal of the game at 15:04, assisted by Hyman and Bouchard, to give Edmonton a 4-2 lead.

All four goals for the two squads came in a span of 3 minutes and 40 seconds. André Tourigny called a 30-second timeout to settle his team down, and both teams shut down the other side the rest of the frame, with Jarry stopping 6 of 7 shots in the period and Vejmelka turning away 4 of 7.

The third period began with Vítek Vaněček replacing Vejmelka in goal for Utah, and he did his part to keep the Oilers off the scoreboard going 10-for-10 in stopped shots until the end when he was pulled for an extra attacker. The Mammoth have only ever scored once in a 6-on-5 situation, and Edmonton kept that streak of futility alive. With eight seconds remaining in the game, Connor McDavid sent everyone to the exits with an unassisted breakaway empty net goal, his 40th overall on the season, to give the Oilers a 5-2 victory in a game which wasn’t even that close. Edmonton continued its perfect domination of Utah, with the two squads scheduled to face one another for the final time this season on April 7 at Delta Center.

“It was tough, for sure,” said defenseman MacKenzie Weegar in the locker room after the game. “I thought [the] first half of the game was good, showed some compete and then obviously the power play goal that we tied up was big. Then they scored right after that, and then again quickly right after that, and then I thought we lost the momentum. We didn’t have the energy after that. The compete level in 50/50 battles wasn’t really there either. Definitely something that comes within, it’s not something that you can teach. That’s definitely look yourself in the mirror type stuff, but I trust in this group and we’ll bounce back the right way.”

Alexander Kerfoot, who opened the night’s scoring with a pinball machine shot caroming off of two Edmonton players, addressed the team’s lack of follow through in the game. “We obviously just didn’t have enough of a pushback, in the third especially. We’re down two goals in a game, fighting for a playoff spot against a team who’s also fighting, and we didn’t even make them work for it, didn’t make them earn it. Disappointing. It’s on us,” Kerfoot said. When asked why Utah hasn’t been able to defeat the Oilers, Kerfoot responded somewhat indignantly, “How many games have we played, like six? We were winless against LA, won last game. They’re a good team. They’ve been in the cup finals twice in a row. It’s hard to beat good teams in this league. They’ve got some elite players. We’d like to do a better job against them, and it’s no excuse.”

Utah Mammoth Head Coach André Tourigny, who coached his 400th career game on Tuesday night, said, “We did a lot of good stuff defensively, but I think we didn’t have our usual aggression and our pace, and we gave up too much time and space. Not that it cost us defensively, but it cost us offensively in a sense that we didn’t recover any puck play, we didn’t have the puck enough so that we let them maneuver too much with the puck. I will have loved us to be more aggressive on the puck carrier and generate turnovers or generate takeaways and stuff like that. So that’s what I think of the game.” Talking about the third period, Bear continued, “We didn’t have the puck enough. I think defensively, we were in contain mode. I have talked about that before, and I will repeat it. Your biggest enemy when you trail, is when you think you want to score, so instead you keep your tank, your energy for to go on offense. So what happens is you don’t have the puck, so you defend because you don’t have the same aggression. You don’t create a stop, you don’t create a hit where there’s a battle, then you can recover the puck and go on the offense. So you end up spending all your energy defending instead of spending quick energy defensively, recovering pucks, and then you can go on the offense. Instead of that, it’s a little bit of a human reaction, you get passive defensively. You keep your energy from going on the offense, and then you’re not going in the offense, because you end up not recovering the puck and the team and the other side keeps the puck below the goal line, and they play low, high, and so on and so forth. So you end up defending for the entire period. That’s what I think of the third period. We did not have the right aggression without the puck, so we had to defend away too much, and that took our offense away. That’s the period we generated the least, because we’re waiting for the offense instead of making it happen.”

Tourigny’s career won/loss record through Tuesday night is 164-191-45, with his Arizona record being 89-131-26 and his Utah record standing on the positive side of the ledger at 75-60-19.

The Mammoth (37-29-6) close out the current homestand on Thursday against the Washington Capitals (35-28-9) before embarking on a trio of Pacific coast games against Los Angeles, Seattle, and Vancouver.

Giants win final tuneup before regular season 8-2

By Vince Cestone

SAN FRANCISCO–The San Francisco Giants open the regular season on Wednesday evening, and they look ready to take on the New York Yankees at Oracle Park as they beat the Sultanes de Monterrey 8-2 on Tuesday night.

Landon Roupp, who was looking to bounce back from his poor start against the Los Angeles Dodgers on March 18, did just that. He threw 5 1/3 innings, giving up just four hits and two runs. He struck out six Sultanes batters but did walk three. Roupp figures to be the Giants’ fifth starter this season.

The Giants struck first in the fourth inning. After two walks, Giants’ outfielder Jung Hoo Lee launched a one-out, three-run homer against Sultanes pitcher Justus Sheffield that gave San Francisco a 3-0 lead. Lee is having a fantastic spring, hitting .455 (10-for-22), with a .500 on-base percentage and a 1.227 OPS.

The Sultanes answered back with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, left fielder Brayan Mendoza doubled in catcher Ricardo Genoves and center fielder Ismael Alcantra. That made the score 3-2 Giants. But the Giants got those runs right back the next inning.

Third baseman Christian Koss hit a little league home run to lead off the inning. Alcantra misplayed the ball in center, allowing Koss to come in and score. The play was scored as a triple and an error, giving the Giants a 4-2 lead.

Then, after a walk and a wild pitch, Jake Holton doubled in another run to make it 5-2 Giants.

San Francisco tacked on two more runs in the seventh inning when Victor Bericoto doubled in two runs, giving the Giants a 7-2 lead. Bericoto is having a fabulous spring, hitting .419 with a .422 on-base percentage and 1.120 OPS. He had three home runs and 14 RBIs in 43 at-bats this spring. Bericoto was recently optioned to the minor leagues, but he has certainly made an impression and could be back with the Giants very soon if he continues his hot hitting in the minors.

The Giants capped their scoring in the eighth inning, when Holton hit a two-out, RBI single to give the Giants an 8-2 lead. Holton went 2-for-3 on the night.

On the bullpen side for the Giants, Michael Fulmer and Blake Tidwell combined for 3 2/3 hitless innings and seven strikeouts. Tidwell had four strikeouts in two innings and closed out the game.

Up next, the Giants will open the season on Wednesday night against the Yankees at 5:05 p.m. at Oracle Park. Giants ace Logan Webb will be on the hill for the Giants against the Yankees’ Max Fried. The game will be televised exclusively on Netflix.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: The Warriors’ report is not good

The Warriors’ report is not good

Over the last few years, the area around Chase Center in San Francisco has been a party atmosphere, with the Warriors competing every season, but things have changed, and the Bandwagon of Warriors fans is not what it used to be; they are deserting in droves.

The Warriors played at the Oakland Arena from 1971 to 2019; they won the NBA title in 1975, 2015, 2017, and 2018. Then they moved to the brand-new, spectacular Chase Center in San Francisco for the 2019-20 season and won the 2022 NBA title, the only one since moving to San Francisco.

This season, the team has faced many setbacks. Obviously, their superstar Stephen Curry is the one who has the Warriors worried. Curry will be evaluated before the game at Chase Center this Wednesday against the Brooklyn Nets. After Curry’s practice, the Warriors have to make a decision, and with only ten (10) games left during the regular season, the team and their fans are praying he can return because without Curry, they have little chance.

As of March 21, 2026, Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry is recovering from a right knee injury diagnosed as runner’s knee combined with a bone bruise. His last game was on January 30, 2026.

The team just lost Guard Moses Moody for the remainder of the season, suffering from a torn left patellar tendon during the recent overtime victory over the Mavericks.

In conclusion, the Golden State Warriors must win the next three games to have a shot at ‘Eight in the West’.

While playing in the Oakland Area, the Warriors had great fans, extremely loyal, who, especially after their 1975-76 NBA title season, were the NBA team from Northern California, years before the Sacramento Kings were born.

During the 1990s, when I was their Spanish radio play by play announcer for all games, home and away, traveling with the team, by the way, the only Spanish play-by-play announcer they ever hired in their history, these are the players I remember, especially the “Run TMC Trio”, Mullin, Hardaway, Richmond and others under coach Don Nelson. However, my favorite overall player during those years in the NBA was Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls, whom I had the pleasure of interviewing a few times

Kings Crushed By Hornets In Forgettable Game 134-90; Charlotte gets fourth straight win

Charlotte Hornets guard LeMelo Ball (1) takes a jump shot against the Sacramento Kings guard Malik Monk (left) in the first half at Golden 1 in Sacramento on Tue Mar 24, 2026 (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

It wasn’t pretty! The Sacramento Kings (19-54) were demolished by the Charlotte Hornets (37-34) 134-90. They did come into this game even more beat-up then ever with Russell Westbrook still out, and Nique Clifford and Killian Hayes injured last Sunday.

The Hornets were on fire from beyond the arc draining 26 and many of those three’s were second chance shots. With the playoffs at stake the Hornets had a palpable goal in their sites and they could not be stopped.

Game recap: The Hornets are fighting to move into playoff position. They are currently in tenth place but they are a half game behind the ninth place Heat and a game behind the eighth place Magic.

They certainly have a great chance to make the playoffs making Tuesday night’s game a critical one for Charlotte. Playing at home and with so much at stack they will be tough to contain. They have won their past three games and they are really playing like a playoff bound team right now. They are a three-point shooting team and the Kings will also have that to contend with.

The Hornets came out with a vengence leading after the first 12 minutes of play 34-25 and they were just getting started. It was like a runaway freight train that continued to pick up speed as the game wore on. There was no stopping the Hornets outscoring the Kings in the second quarter 38-22 taking a 72-47 lead at the half.

The Hornets continued their onslaught in the third quarter picking up where they left at the finish of the first half. They outscored Sacramento 41-29. Trailing by so much this game was decided in the third quarter.

The Hornets were on fire from beyond the arc and four of their starters had double digits going into the fourth quarter. Bench player Coby White could not be stopped scoring 27 points after only 18 minutes of play. Charlotte came unleashed from beyond the arc draining 23 triples with over seven minutes left in the game.

At 7:04 left on the clock, the Hornets were leading 124-82. They had punished the Kings in every quarter of this lop-sided game. Sacramento had been beat up offensively and defensively.

The Hornets were closing in on a season high for three’s, their highest 26 and with almost six minutes left in the game they had already drained 24. With two minutes left in the game Charlotte had tied their season high from beyond the arc.

While the Hornets did not break their record for three’s in the game, they certainly made a statement as to their push towards a playoff berth. The final in this game was 134-90 with their largest lead 46 points.

This was sheer disappointment for the Sacramento Kings and a game that they need to put behind them. They struggled from start to finish getting outscored in every quarter. Daeqwon Plowden had the high for the Kings with 22 points. Devin Carter finished with 18 points and Maxime Raynaud with 16 points. The Hornets had their way with Sacramento defensively and offensively.

The high for this game came off the Charlotte bench with Coby White scoring 27 points in only 18 minutes of play, and collectively the Hornet bench scored 61 points. Four of the Hornet starters had double figures. LaMelo Ball had 20 points and Moussa Diabate had a double double, 17 points and 11 rebounds. The Hornets have now won four games in a row.

Game notes: After getting back on the winning track beating the Brooklyn Nets 126-122 on Sunday the Kings headed to Charlotte and took on the Hornets on Tuesday night. While the Kings did win their last game it did come at a cost when both Nique Clifford and Killian Hayes were injured in the game.

Clifford suffered a left ankle injury in the game limping off the court in the fourth quarter. It has been reported that he has a left mid-foot sprain after just returning in the Nets game after a hamstring injury. Killian Hayes was also injured in that game due to a toe injury.

Of course the Kings will not see a post-season but these continued injuries rob the younger players of precious time and experience. Veteran Russell Westbrook was out for the Hornets game with right foot soreness after having missed the Nets game.

Malik Monk and Devin Carter will no doubt see increased backcourt roles in Westbrook’s absence. Precious Achiuwa who has been outstanding is also out with lower back soreness. And so go the injuries for the Sacramento Kings.

Thursday night the Kings travel to Orlando for a matchup with the Orlando Magic. Hopefully the Kings will get some of their injured players back on the court trying to shake off Tuesday night’s game. Tipoff for that game is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
