San Jose Barracuda podcast with Marko Ukalovic: Barracuda put away first place Wranglers; San Jose takes on rough and tough Toronto this weekend

San Jose Barracuda forward Colin Graf (51) scores a third period goal to tie up the game against the Calgary Wranglers at Tech CU in San Jose on Sun Nov 17, 2024 (San Jose Barracuda Flickr)

San Jose Barracuda podcast with Marko:

#1 It was the San Jose Barracuda’s (9-5-0-0) Luca Cagnoni overtime goal that got the Barracuda past the visiting Calgary Wranglers (12-3-1-0) at Tech CU on Sunday night 5-4. Cagnoni’s goal sent the happy hosts home avoiding a loss.

#2 The Barracuda had to play catch up three times scoring three times in the second period to tie the game 3-3 and once again tying the Wranglers in the third period scoring to tie it up 4-4 and force overtime and of course winning in OT 5-4.

#3 The overtime win marks the first time this season that the Barracuda had to use more than 60 minutes to win a game.

#4 In overtime the Barracuda’s Danil Gushchin nearly ended it early with a shot that hit the post in the first minute, but at 3:25 Cagnoni got a two on one pass that was intended for Andrew Poturalski that deflected off a Wrangler defender that went in for the game winner.

#5 The Barracuda are at the Coca Cola Arena in Toronto this Saturday and Sunday at 1:00pm PST. The Marlies are third in the North Division at 8-1-2-2 and are tough at home. This is a big road game for the Barracuda against the Marlies who have home ice.

Cardinal Remain Undefeated after Wild Ride with Aggies, 79-65; Raynaud had Career Game

Maxime Raynaud would not be denied leading the Stanford Cardinal in scoring with 33 points to help defeat the UC Davis Aggies at Maple Pavilion Sun Nov 17, 2024 (AP News photo)

By Michael Roberson

STANFORD, Calif. — Maxime Raynaud scored a career high 33 points and tied his career high five three pointers, while helping his Stanford Cardinal (4-0, 0-0 ACC) stay unbeaten, while taming the University of California – Davis Aggies (2-2, 0-0 Big West) 79-65, in a Northern California Battle.

“I think it started yesterday. I think our football team had an awesome win against a top ranked opponent. Everyone rushed the field, and I told the guys we’re going to keep that going, keep rolling.” Raynaud on his inspirational performance.

The Aggies actually scored first to start the game. There were three lead changes and one tie, in the early moments of the game, The Cardinal would have an answer for that mini run by their opponent.

Stanford would eventually go on a 9-0 run and lead by as many as 18 points by halftime. Despite the poor shooting (36%) by the home team, they were still able to pull away from Davis with contributions from Raynaud (17 points & 8 rebounds), Jaylen Blakes (12) and Benny Gealer (8), Raynaud also launched three successful three pointers.

UC Davis had no player score at least 10 points, and their shooting was worse (31%) than Stanford’s percentile. They were also outrebounded by more than double their amount.

After 20 minutes of action, Stanford led by 18 points, 41-28.

In the second half, Stanford scored the first points on a three by Oziyah Sellers, placing their lead at its highest plateau, 21 points. Davis was not going to go down without a fight. They actually had an 8-0 run in them during the second 20-minute stanza.

Stanford’s 12-0 run was a carryover from the end of the first half and the opening minutes of the second. The Cardinal’s shooting improved slightly in the second half, but did not prevent the racing Aggies from getting the game within single-digit(s). Davis, on the other hand, shot a blistering 59% from the floor. This assisted greatly on their comeback attempt, and their top scorer was much better in the second half.

Davis closed the gap to the smallest deficit of six points, midway through the second half; however, Stanford, still feeding off the football team’s momentum, turned up the heat inside Maples and widened the gap again.

When the final whistle sounded, after 40 minutes of regulation time, the mighty Tree (stanford) was still standing, and still Undefeated. The Cardinal won their fourth game in a row to start the season, by a 14 point victory, 79-65.

Maxime Raynaud led all players with a career high 33 points and 14 rebounds. His five 3s tied his career best too. Despite fouling ouy, Jaylen Blakes chipped in 17 points and handed out 4 assists, Ryan Agarwal did not reach double-figures in scoring (5), but he did in rebounds (11).

Davis was led by Ty Johnson’s 26 points, Pablo Tamba’s 13 points (also fouled out), and Leo DeBruhl (11).

Stanford will next be in action, Wednesday, November 20. They will host the Norfolk State Spartans at 7:00 PM PDT on the ACC Network, Davis heads to Arizona to take on the Grand Canyon Lopes, also on the 20th at 7:00 PM MST on ESPN+.

A Stunning Seattle Final Drive Beats San Francisco 20-17 Ending a Three Year Drought

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy (13) walks off the field after being defeated by the Seattle Seahawks at Levis Stadium in Santa Clara on Sun Nov 17, 2024 (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

The San Francisco 49ers (5-5) and the Seattle Seahawks (5-5) met in a highly competitive contest Sunday afternoon. The 49ers led at the half 7-6 but the second half revealed a determined Geno Smith scored a touchdown in the final seconds of the game to take the lead and the eventual win 20-17.

Game recap: Other than a San Francisco touchdown with ten seconds left on the clock in the opening quarter there was not a lot of action offensively. Brock Purdy rushed for a ten yard touchdown taking back the lead that the Seahawks had established mid-way through the first quarter.

Seattle kicker Jason Myers had a 52 yard field goal, the first team to score in the game. San Francisco would end the quarter with the Purdy touchdown and going into the second quarter the 49ers led by the score of 7-3.

The only score in the second quarter was a Seattle field goal, a 57 yard Myers kick. The score at the half was 7-6 with San Francisco leading. The first half was a highly competitive one between two evenly matched teams.

There had been only two field goals and one touchdown in the first thirty minutes of play and both teams would be looking for a whole lot more offense in the second half; that one huge play that will break this game open.

San Francisco needed to figure out more ways to score more points in the second half of this low-scoring game, and keep Seattle guessing. The Seahawks had not found the end zone in the first half something that they needed to do if they had any chance of coming out with a win in this game.

San Francisco would need to get their offensive groove going in the second half; they especially wanted to see the dangerous running back Christian McCaffrey get cooking. The San Francisco defense gave their offense an amazing opportunity in the opening minutes of the third quarter intercepting the ball near the Seattle 27 yard line.

The 49ers were poised to extend their lead. San Francisco, was having their share of penalties some of them ill-timed infractions. They had back to back penalties after the interception and were unable to find the end zone. They had to settle for a 33 yard Jake Moody field goal extending their lead 10-6.

The Seahawks got a great drive going following the San Francisco field goal with quarterback Geno Smith mixing it up with some plays through the air as well as on the ground. Seattle drove down into the red zone and had a first and goal inside the San Francisco five yard line.

The Seahawks Kenneth Walker punched the ball into the end zone, the extra point was good and the Seahawks had taken back the lead 13-10. After throwing the interception earlier, Smith was undeterred in this second drive of the third quarter.

San Francisco fought back driving into Seattle territory led by McCaffrey and Purdy really got the passing game going. Inside the red zone, San Francisco committed their eighth penalty but came right back taking up residence on the Seahawk five yard line. The possession culminated in a Purdy to Jauan Jennings three yard pass, the touchdown, with Jennings waltzing into the end zone through a huge gap taking a 17-13 lead with 9:33 left in the game.

The Seahawks put together a great drive having a fourth and one on the San Francisco 37 yard line but could not convert and San Francisco took over on downs with under four minutes left on the clock.

The 49ers defense had really stepped up when it was needed most. San Francisco needed a couple of first downs and some solid clock management to finish off Seattle. The 49ers stalled on the Seattle 42 yard line forcing a punt and the Seahawks had renewed life.

Seattle put together a stunning drive with Smith running the ball into the end zone with 12 seconds left in the game taking a 20-17 lead. The Seahawks had beaten the 49ers for the first time in three years.

Both quarterbacks had done a great job spreading the ball out throughout this game This was a hotly contested game from start to finish with San Francisco coming up just short. Purdy finished the game with 21 of 28 passes, 159 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He was sacked twice. McCaffrey rushed for 79 yards and 27 receiving yards. Jennings had 91 receiving yards in the loss.

Seattle was more explosive in the second half of the game than San Francisco. Smith had a very productive game finishing with 25 of 32 passes for 221 yards, and one interception. He also rushed for 29 yards, some of those yards coming in the final seconds of the game. Kenneth Walker III rushed for 54 yards and Jaxon Smith-Njigba had 110 receiving yards. The payback that the Seahawks had been looking for became a reality.

Game notes: Sunday afternoon the 49ers were looking for their third consecutive win as they took on the Seahawks at Levi’s Stadium. McCaffrey continues to work back into the system after his long layoff. After a slow start this season, San Francisco had turned things around and but just couldn’t get past the Seahawks Sunday even though they had some vastly improved offense and defense.

Seattle came into this game following a bye in week ten and a loss to the Los Angeles Rams 26-20 in week nine. Seattle opened the season with a bang winning three games in a row over the Broncos , the Patriots and the Dolphins but stalled out losing to the Lions, the Giants and a loss to the 49ers on a Thursday Night Football matchup back on October 10th.

Seattle got a little payback in this game. San Francisco had beat the Cowboys 30-24 in week 8, followed by a bye in week nine and then a 23-20 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Niners couldn’t dominate Seattle like they did earlier this season in this game. San Francisco had beaten the Seahawks for the past three years but that string ended Sunday.

The 49ers will take on the Green Bay Packers in a week 12 matchup. Kickoff for that game is slated for 1:25 PM.

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Gardner Minshew (15) had to duck and dodger receivers all day against the Miami Dolphins at Hard Rock Cafe Stadium in Miami on Sun Nov 17, 2024 (AP News photo)

On the Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Rich:

#2 The Raiders with this loss have given up 75 points in their last two games 34 points today against the Dolphins and last week 41 points to the Cincinnati Bengals. The defense has to be exhausted and the offense is giving up to many fourth downs.

#3 Rich the fourth quarter today really ate up the Raiders defense the Dolphins were unstoppable scoring 17 points to putting much put this game out of reach with the Dolphins De’Von Achane carrying for two yards for a touchdown at 10:37, Jonnu Smith at 3:19 caught a 57 yard pass to make it 31-19 and at Miami kicker Jason Sanders booted a 46 yard field goal at 1:55 for the 34-19 final.

#4 Raiders quarterback Gardner Minshew continues to get frustrated and just couldn’t convert enough scoring to catch the Dolphins. Minshew 30-43 for 280 yards and two touchdowns. Minshew was having trouble staying in the pocket and getting protection.

#5 Up next for the Raiders the Denver Broncos at Allegiant Stadium next Sunday for a 1:05pm PST kickoff against the Denver Broncos and quarterback Bo Nix. The Broncos have been hovering around .500 and played the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. Can you see the offensive line recovering for the Raiders and being able to hold the Broncos pass rush so that Minshew could get some time to pass the ball?

A’s Relocation podcast with Daniel Dullum: Mayor of West Sacramento is convinced city can build 40-50 thousand seat ballpark for A’s

Sacramento Rivercats owner Vivek Ranadive has welcomed A’s owner John Fisher at Sutter Health Park for the 2025-27 seasons before the team moves to Las Vegas (Sacramento Bee photo)

On the A’s podcast with Daniel Dullum:

#1 West Sacramento Mayor Martha Guerrero said that the City of West Sacramento can build a 40 to 50 thousand seat stadium along the Sacramento River and Mayor Guerrero said that she’s convinced that they can bring Major League Baseball to West Sacramento.

#2 Guerrero said that West Sacramento would like to work with the land owners near the river to see how they would like to shape it. They would help with the design and the city would help navigate with the existing land that they have.

#3 A’s owner John Fisher when he came up for the press conference in West Sacramento said that he mentioned West Sacramento as an interesting place to play ball. It’s something that the A’s would consider.

#4 The Tropicana in Las Vegas already has demoed the towers and is clearing the space for the ball park. What’s left is the John Fisher family to put together the $1 billion for the construction costs of the park. The deadline to make the construction cost payment is Dec 5th where the Las Vegas Stadium Authority will be holding a meeting.

#5 One thing to keep in mind the population contrast with Sacramento vs. West Sacramento is a huge gap. Sacramento’s population is 526,384 and West Sacramento’s population 55,842. Also to keep in mind West Sacramento is in Yolo County which is much smaller than Sacramento. With West Sacramento having the smaller population and less taxes coming in how would they pay for a ball park?

Fox has hot hand leads with 49 points as Kings defeat Jazz 121-117

By Jeremiah Salmonson

SACRAMENTO–The Sacramento Kings were back in action on Saturday night. The Kings played for the second time in as many days after losing to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday night. The Kings lost on Friday by the final of 130-126 in an overtime affair.

De’Aaron Fox scored a franchise-record 60 points, which proved too few to win the game. The Kings (7-6) welcomed the Utah Jazz (3-8) on Saturday night. The Jazz were coming off a win at home against the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday.

The Jazz discarded the Mavs 115-113. On Saturday, the Kings and Jazz tipped off at 7 p.m. PST in Sacramento. The Kings were short-handed on Saturday as they played without Malik Monk, DeMar DeRozan, and Domantas Sabonis, who were out with ankle, back, and back injuries, respectively. The Kings defeated the Utah Jazz 121-117 on Saturday night at Golden One and Fox led with 49 points in the win.

In the first quarter, Fox picked up where he left off the night before. Fox scored 18 points in the first quarter to propel the Kings to a slim early lead. Swipa was clearly on another planet, and Kings fans were here for it.

The Kings outscored the Jazz 35-31 in the first quarter. It was clear that the message of taking the open shots resonated with the team. The Kings needed to keep the energy up in the second quarter.

In the second, the Kings came out with good energy. However, they got sloppy late in the quarter. The Kings built up a 12-point lead in the quarter, only to see it evaporate into a one-point lead going into halftime.

The Kings went into halftime leading 64-63 after being outscored by the Jazz 32-29 in the second quarter. Fox led the way in the first half with 26 points. Keegan Murray was yet to get going in a game in which the Kings desperately needed him to score.

In the third quarter, the Kings lost their halftime advantage. The Jazz outscored the Kings in the third quarter 31-26 to lead the game 94-90 going into the fourth quarter. The Kings couldn’t get much going offensively except for Fox. Kevin Huerter and Murray had combined for 20 points in the game through three quarters. Someone other than Fox had to step up in the fourth if the Kings hoped to win the game.

In the fourth quarter, it was the Fox show once again. The Kings’ PG scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to push the Kings over the finish line. The Kings outscored the Jazz 31-23 in the final quarter to win the game 121-117.

Fox scored 49 points in the game with nine assists. Fox is only the third player in NBA history to score 109 points across a two-day span. The other players to do that are Kobe Bryant and Wilt Chamberlain. Lauri Markkanen led the Jazz in defeat with 25 points.

Reacting to Fox being the third player ever to score 109 points across two days, Mike said, “Wow … I can’t be more proud of him. It was just phenomenal to watch him do it—Wilt, Kobe, and Foxy.”

Up Next: The Sacramento Kings will stay home to take on the Atlanta Hawks on Monday at Golden 1 Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. PST. Malik Monk will be out with an ankle injury. The availability of DeRozan and Sabonis remains up in the air.
