The San Jose Sharks (2-6-0) wrapped up the East Coast road trip going a respectable 2-2 after beating the Philadelphia Flyers (4-2-0) 3-0 Sunday night from the Wells Fargo Center. The Sharks reversed a recent trend of poor second periods, scoring twice on Erik Karlsson and Steven Lorentz strikes while adding the empty netter. James Reimer made 30 saves for the shutout.

Karlsson opened the scoring 9:34 into the second period after beating goalie Felix Sandstrom with a slap shot for his team-leading third goal of the year. Tomas Hertl assisted on the goal and Alexander Barabanov picked up his first point of the year with a secondary assist.

Steven Lorentz picked up his first goal in Teal after joining the team in the Brent Burns trade with Carolina in the offseason. Jaycob Megna flipped what appeared to be a harmless shot on Sandstrom, but Lorentz buzzed the net to tip the puck in for a 2-0 lead with 1:31 left in the second period. Nico Sturm added an empty netter to match Karlsson for the team lead I’m goals.

The Sharks return home for a tough stretch, facing the rival Golden Knights Tuesday, the Maple Leafs Thursday and the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday.

Sharks Can’t Follow Up First Win, Drop 2-1 Dud to Devils

Any boost Thursday’s win over the New York Rangers gave the Sharks was gone by Saturday afternoon. San Jose lost to New Jersey Devils 2-1 at the Prudential center. New Jersey outshot San Jose 36-22, including 20-8 in the pivotal second period. The Sharks Fall to 1-6-0 in the first seven games.

Ygor Sherangovich and Dawson Mercer scored for the Devils, while Kevin Labanc had the lone Sharks tally. Despite the loss, San Jose goalie Kaapo Kähkönen turned in a strong performance in net, making 34 saves on 36 attempts.

Sherangovich opened the scoring in the second period, pickpocketing Marc-Edouard Vlasic before beating Kähkönen one-on-one 13:21 into the second period. Mercer scored on the power play at the 15:43 mark after taking a Nico Hischier pass in the slot, missing on the initial chance but converting on the rebound for the 2-0 lead.

New Jersey also had a goal disallowed after review found Nico Hischier directed the puck into the net with a distinct kicking motion. Labanc breathed new life into the Sharks just 32 seconds later, skating in on the rush and looking pass to Nico Sturm but instead firing the puck on MacKenzie Blackwood for his first goal since November 22nd of last season.

He appeared in only 22 games last season due to injury. Scott Harrington and Oskar Lindblom assisted for their first helpers as Sharks. The Sharks face a surprisingly tough task if they want to split the road trip Sunday. They face the 3-1-0 Philadelphia Flyers who are thriving under new coach John Tortorella despite expectations to the contrary.

Quinn, Grier, Sharks get First W With 3-2 OT Win Over Rangers

Erik Karlsson’s reaction said it all; arms stretched out in equal parts jubilation and relief. The San Jose Sharks have won their first game of the 2022-23 season, beating Eastern Conference juggernauts the New York Rangers 3-2 in overtime at Madison Square Garden Thursday night.

Karlsson scored the winner 49 seconds into overtime, Radim Simek scored his first goal since December of 2021 and Logan Couture picked up a power play strike in the win that came with added significance.

It marks Sharks Head Coach David Quinn’s first win in teal against the team that sacked him in May 2021 after 3 seasons. Mike Grier, taking the reigns from Doug Wilson as general manager in the offseason, also enjoyed his first win in command.

Karlsson’s OT goal came on a spirited effort that saw the former Norris winner tripped up driving to the net. While he went to the ice, he maintained control of the puck and fed the puck to Timo Meier. Meier took the puck behind the net, dishing to Karlsson in the slot for the winner.

San Jose was up 1-0 after the 1st period thanks to Couture’s power play goal 6:02 into the game (Karlsson assisted for a two point night), but New York scored twice in the first half of the 2nd period on goals from Filip Chytil and NHL points leader Artemi Panarin for a 2-1 lead.

Simek beat Igor Shesterkin with a wrister after trailing Matt Nieto into the slot with 6:50 to go before the second intermission. San Jose entered the 3rd trailing the Blueshirts 21-9 but pressed furiously to a 16-2 3rd period shot differential, but Shesterkin turned aside all shots as a reigning Vezina trophy winner is prone to do. James Reimer was stout in net for San Jose, turning aside 21 of the Rangers’ 23 shots.

The grueling East Coast swing wraps up for the Sharks with two matches in the Tri-State. They face the Devils Saturday before a Sunday showdown with the Flyers.

Sharks Fall 5-2 to Isles, on Verge of Matching Worst Start

The New York Islanders had plenty to celebrate on Tue Oct 18, 2022 defeating the San Jose Sharks at UBS Arena in Belmont (@jamesonwhiskey photo)

By Matthew Harrington

The San Jose Sharks are still searching for their first win and points of the season after another thumping, this time at the hands of the New York Islanders 5-2 Tuesday night.

Nicole Sturm and Evgeny Svechnikov both scored their second goals of the season in the loss. The Islanders pepper James Reimer with 45 shots, putting the Sharks one loss away from matching the franchise record.

Sturm beat Semyon Varlamov on a wrist shot 12:50 into the first period, but the lead would be short-lived. Anders Lee and Zach Parise scored in the middle minutes of the second period.

Svechnikov beat Varlamov on a deflection in the waning minutes of the second period, his second point of the game after assisting on Sturm’s strike. Any hopes of heading into the break tied wasn’t in the cards. Oliver Wahsltrom scored with 56 seconds left in the period for a 3-2 lead.

Wahlstrom would score again 5:24 into the third and Cal Clutterbuck added the empty netter for the Sharks second five-goal loss in as many games.

The Sharks continue on the first true road trip of the season when they face coach David Quinn’s old side, the Rangers Thursday night.

The San Jose Sharks will be making the transatlantic flight home with lifelong memories and the experiencing of playing hockey in two World capitals. They will not, however, be returning with any points in yow after falling to Nashville 3-2 in Prague Saturday night. The Sharks went winless in both contests of the Global Challenge Series against the Predators.

Luke Kunin converted on the power play for his first goal in teal and Logan Couture scored his first of the campaign, but Nino Niederreiter scored twice and Filip Forsberg potted a goal for the victory. Kevin Lankinen made 31 saves, holding off a late Sharks push for the two points.

The Sharks held a 1-0 lead after twenty minutes thanks to Kunin knocking in a loose puck at the net front with 5:36 left in the frame, but Nashville outscored San Jose 3-1 in the middle frame.

Niederreiter beat Kaapo Kähkönen 4:35 into the second on a snap shot for his second goal against thr Sharks this season. Logan Couture answered right back on the next faceoff, beating Lankinen of a feed from Steven Lorentz ten seconds later for a 2-1 lead. Mario Ferraro also assisted on the goal, his second apple after picking up the secondary assist on Kunin’s goal as well.

The lead was short lived with Forsberg scoring on a wrap around chance the hit off Kähkönen’s pad below the goal line and up and in the net at the 6:29 mark. Niederreiter added his second at the 12:13 mark of the frame for a 3-2 edge. Kähkönen made 15 saves on 18 shots.

The Sharks pushed late, putting 15 shots on goal in the third while allowing only three, but Lankinen turned aside all comers to seal the win for Nashville.

San Jose look to give their coach and general manager their first wins Friday night when they open the season at home. They’ll be facing Brent Burns and the Carolina Hurricanes after an offseason swap.

They’ll then play another rare Friday-Saturday back-to-back when the Chicago Blackhawks come to town Saturday night. The Sharks will be honoring former captain and general manager Doug Wilson that night.

Notes: Steven Lorentz and Oskar Lindblom picked up their first points as members of the Sharks, while Kunin scored his first goal after an offseason trade brought him over from Nashville…the Sharks won the faceoff battle a second night in a row, taking 50.7 percent of the draws…Evgeny Svechnikov and Jaycob Megna drew in for the Sharks, replacing Scott Harrington and Noah Gregor from the opening game lineup…San Jose wore their all teal uniform set as the designated home team, meaning fans have now seen both sets with the Sharks wearing their white sweaters Friday.

Hertl Scores in Hometown, Sharks Lose Opener 4-1

By Matthew Harrington

There was a storybook moment but no happy ending for the San Jose Sharks Friday in Prague with the Sharks losing the season opener 4-1 to the Nashville Predators. Tomáš Hertl scored playing in front of his hometown crowd at O2 Arena, but San Jose couldn’t pick up a win in the first game under new general manager Mike Grier and head coach David Quinn.

Nashville took an early lead with Kiefer Sherwood 8:36 deflecting a puck past Sharks netminder James Reimer 1:01 into play. Hertl responded just by beating Nashville goalie Juuse Saros on a scrambling play 8:36 into the first period. Hertl, Timo Meier and former Pred-turned-Shark Luke Kunin (an assist apiece on the play) all put in yeoman’s work at around the crease and in the corners on the shift, fighting for and winning the loose puck battles to create the chaos for hometown Hertl.

Eeli Tolvanen scored the game-winner on another early strike, this time 1:24 into the 2nd period and Nino Niederreiter lit the lamp with 4:46 left in the period to give Nashville a 3-1 lead. Matt Duchene potted the empty netter with 32 seconds left to finish of the scoring.

The Predators outshot the Sharks by a slim 32-31 margin and neither team capitalized on the four power play opportunities each team received. The Sharks did however score in the seconds after a penalty.

The Sharks have a chance at leaving Prague with a happy (long) flight as they wrap up the 2022 Global Challenge Series with another showdown with Nashville Saturday night. San Jose is expected to tap Kaapo Kähkönen in net while the Predators will most likely choose between one of Connor Ingram or Kevin Lankinen.

Notes: The Sharks won the faceoff battle 36-30 with Nico Sturm winning 7 of 9 faceoffs…Newcomer Luke Kunin was the Sharks leader among forwards in TOI, playing 21:23 including a whopping 3:52 on the penalty kill…As expected, youngsters William Eklund and Thomas Bordeleau were not in Quinn’s Sharks lineup… Marc-Edouard Vlasic played 20 minutes in the season opener after playing 20+ minutes only three times last season…Jonah Gadjovich picked up the Sharks first fighting major of the year, dropping the gloves with Mark Borowiecki in the second period… Alex Barabanov was not in the lineup as he continues to recover from an injury, while Sturm drew in after missing out on playing in his home country against Eisbären Berlin on Wednesday…Markus Nutivaara also remained out.

The San Jose Sharks topped Deutsche Eishockey Liga side Eisbären Berlin 3-1 Tuesday night from Mercedes Benz Arena in their final exhibition tuneup before Friday’s season opener. Steven Lorentz, Tomáš Hertl and Luke Kunin scored for the Sharks and James Reimer and Kaapo Kähkönen combined to make 18 saves to wrap up the exhibition side of the Global Series Challenge.

The Sharks actually found themselves trailing halfway through the game when Giovanni Fiore beat Kähkönen with 7:50 left in the 2nd. Hertl and Timo Meier played give-and-go with Meier threading a perfect backhand pass from below the goal line to Hertl. Hertl knocked in the gimme shot for his first goal of the preseason.

The Sharks potential fourth line stepped up for the game winning goal after Jonah Gadjovich buried a Berlin skater on a Lorentz dump in. Evgeny Svechnikov sauced the loose puck to Erik Karlsson at the point with an open look. Lorentz buzzed the night, redirecting the point shot for a 2-1 lead with 2:14 left in the middle period.

Kunin iced the game with a short-handed dagger with 8:04 left to play. Mario Ferraro rimmed the puck along the boards behind his own net on a clear that reached an open Kunin crossing center ice. Kunin caught the puck, turned and streaked down the left wing before potting his 3rd goal of the preseason.

Up next for San Jose is the 2022-23 season and an 11 AM Friday showdown with the Nashville Predators. The teams are playing a pair of games at O2 Arena in Hertl’s hometown, Prague, Czechia.

A split-squad contingent of the San Jose Sharks topped the Vegas Golden Knights 7-3 at T-Mobile Arena Friday night in Las Vegas. Danil Gushchin had a hat trick and Erik Karlsson, Matt Benning, Jonah Gadjovich and Luke Kunin also scored.

James Reimer made 27 saves and Timo Meier dished out four assists. Karlsson scored his first of the preseason 6:26 into the game with Tomas Hertl and Timo Meier picking up the assists. Vegas Answered back with 1:30 left in the frame on Jack Eichel’s second goal of the preseason.

Gushchin restored a three-goal lead just over two minutes later.Eichel’s second goal of the game 51 seconds into the third made it 5-3 but Gushchin’s third goal and a Luke Kunin power play goal with 8:12 left completed the scoring. San Jose’s power play converted on both chances.

Up next for the Sharks is an exhibition against German Leauge side Eisbären Berlin October 4th in Berlin then the season opener Friday against Nashville in Prague.

Sharks (Preseason): Perfect Still with 3-1 Win over Kings

The San Jose Sharks who have taken two pre season games from the Los Angeles Kings did it again this time at the Toyota Arena in Ontario the Kings AHL affiliate arena of the Ontario Reign on Wed Sep 28, 2022 (@SanJoseSharks photo)

By Matthew Harrington

The San Jose Sharks perfect preseason rolled on the road Wednesday night with the Sharks topping the Los Angeles Kings 3-1 at Toyota Arena.

Thomas Bordeleau, Evgeny Svechnikov and Scott Harrington scored for San Jose, with the Sharks striking twice on the power play in five chances and once shorthanded. Carl Grundstrom netted the Kings lone goal on 27 shots.

Bordeleau opened the scoring 5:54 into the first period on the man advantage on assist from Kevin Labanc and Timo Meier. The second-year pro out of Michigan is fighting for a spot with the big club and could help new Sharks coach David Quinn improve on a bottom eleven power play from last season.

Svechnikov, a player expected to help at both the NHL and AHL levels this year, also scored on the power play to make the lead 2-0 with 7:12 left in the second period. Radim Simek had the primary helper as he looks to impress the new coaching staff after being a healthy scratch for stretches under the previous regime. Scott Reedy also assisted on the goal.

Grundstrom scored 2:27 into the final period, but Scott Harrington scored shorthanded goal with 1:27 left in regulation to ice the game. Harrington is in camp on a professional tryout and is more known for his defensive prowess than his offensive gifts, but converting and then some on a penalty kill goes a long way to getting on a coach’s good graces.

Next up for San Jose is split squad action Friday night. Team Teal will be in action on the road facing both the Vegas Golden Knights and Anaheim Ducks as they tune up for the last few times before departing for Europe and the start of the new season.

Sharks Season Ends With 6-0 Loss to Vegas, Head into Pivotal Offseason

It was a forgettable ending to a forgettable season for the San Jose Sharks, falling to the Vegas Golden Knights 6-0 at home. Marc-Andre Fleury shut out the Sharks on just 19 shots, Dylan Sikura scored a pair, and Alex Pietrangelo, Keegan Kolesar, William Carrier and Jonathan Marchessault all scored for the Golden Knights. Vegas finishes their season 82 points( including sweeping the season series against San Jose), sitting two points ahead of the Colorado Avalanche for the President’s Trophy with one game remaining for general manager Joe Sakic’s team. San Jose has missed the postseason for a second consecutive season after missing out on the expanded Bubble playoffs last season, not necessarily an unexpected result, but disappointing nonetheless.

“This organization had to take a step back to take a step forward,” said Sharks coach Bob Boughner when asked to reflect on the season. “I know that’s a bit of a cliché but that’s the absolute truth. There was a path set out early on, that started last year at the trade deadline, last hockey season. We had to live through it this year. I really believe moving forward it will be a different situation, a different set of expectations.”

The Sharks finish the season with 49 points and a 21-28-7 record, 11 points shy of the St. Louis Blues (who could add still with a game remaining on their schedule) for the last playoff spot in the West Division. While the loss brings finality to a difficult season, most questions about the team’s future remain.

“We talked about our journey and where we need to be in September when we come back to work,” said Boughner. “I talked about the young guys getting the opportunities and not expecting a job when they get back to camp. They’ve got to earn it again. The veterans, the last message I sent was ‘We can’t get anywhere as an organization if those players aren’t our best players every night. That didn’t happen every night this season.”

Wednesday night Patrick Marleau played 13:01 in the final game of his 23rd season. He finished the year with 9 points in 56 games, another season without missing a game. He played the central role in the Sharks greatest achievement on the season, appearing in career game 1,767 to match Gordie Howe for all-time games played April 17th in Minnesota.

He broke the record the following Monday in Sin City. He was on a one-year contract and hasn’t hinted if he’ll return at age 42 to add on to his 910-game Iron Man streak. If not, the Sharks 2nd overall selection in 1997 would walk away from the game with 522 goals and 589 assists over 21 seasons with the Sharks and career totals of 566 goals and 631 helpers when you add in his stints with Toronto and Pittsburgh, a surefire Hall of Fame career

Who will the expansion Seattle Kraken take in their player selection draft in the offseason? The favorite is Brent Burns who wrapped up his season with a -2 over 22:49 of ice time. He finished the season with 29 points (7g, 22a) over 56 games. He has 540 points over 715 games in teal.

Even the Sharks best player, Evander Kane, has a murky future. There has been talk about nullifying his contract mutually as he works through bankruptcy. He finished the campagin with 22 goals and 27 assists (matching a career high) and would have surely eclipsed his best single-season totals in a full-length campaign.

Alexei Melnichuk made 38 saves in just his second career NHL start. The import from the KHL Melnichuk with the Barracuda. Who will join Martin Jones at the NHL level will be the question in net, or rather one of the questions. If Jones returns or is bought out remains to be seen. He went 15-14-4 with a 3,27 GAA bolstered by a hot stretch in January where he looked like the goaltender the Sharks bet on for six years, $34.5 million for the 2018 season.

Among the bright spots for the Sharks is the fact that only one player missed time for a positive Covid-19 case in a year when teams saw their whole year derailed by widespread cases. This despite opening the year with training camp in Arizona with County health officers not permitting professional sports in Santa Clara until right around the Sharks delayed (by Covid, of course) home opener.

Also noteworthy were the jumps that second year pro Mario Ferraro and rookie Nikolai Knyzhov made on defense. Both were asked to represent their respective countries in this month’s world championships, though Knyzhov will miss it as he goes under the knife for a sports hernia. An offseason of more advancements by the young players mentioned above and others given opportunities will go a long way towards ending a two-season playoff drought.

On the upside, again, is that the Sharks own their own first round draft pick this year and could be selecting somewhere in the top ten in a draft deep in upper echelon talent at the top. They also took care of some business Wednesday morning, inking Alexander Barabanov to another one year deal at just a hair over $1 million. It’s a cap-friendly deal for a player that showed top-six talent (7 points in 8 games with San Jose) when given an opportunity to play big minutes after not getting a fair shake in stacked Toronto.

“We got to see some prospects,” said Boughner, reflecting on the season. “We went through a trade deadline, restocked the shelves. We got a guy like Barabanov. That was a positive. Being able to experience the (Patty) Marleau breaking the record was amazing. There were a lot of good things that happened along the way. I thought that our dressing room is a better room than it was in training camp. This is a good learning experience for everyone.”
