Michael Duca on Cal basketball

by Michael Duca

BERKELEY–It’s nice that Cal is 6-3 but it would nice to see the Golden Bears start winning basketball games away from Haas they’ve got one victory from their home floor so far this year and that’s not going to work in the Pac 12. The Pac 12 is absolutely loaded this year and for Cal they have shot at a reasonable seeding at a conference tournament.

The Bears could have a 20 game winning season they have a shot at making the big dance, they’re going to have to win some road games. It’s never easy because your traveling which takes a lot of time away from the court and takes a lot of energy. You know how much fun it is to wait for your seat on the plane now imagine these guys doing it all the time.

Your away from home and your in a hostile crowd and your in a building that’s not yours, your depth perception and sight line comes to path through everything. You have to adjust to the building a little bit and for two or three minutes its just enough for the other team to get the crowd moving and make it hard on you.

The time change in Maui didn’t hurt them, or the altitude in Santa Barbara didn’t effect them, they just got outplayed by Santa Barbara and it was bound to happen sooner or later. Santa Barbara has never beaten a Pac 12 team finally all things come to an end, all things change, it just looks on the stat sheet that Cal didn’t shoot very well on the road and if that happens their probably not going to win.

Cal guard Jabari Bird he is Cal’s premier recruit this off season and he played in my hometown of Richmond, Bird is an extraordinary talent there and as you know Cal head coach Mike Montgomery has a little difficult time trusting freshmen and a little difficulty giving them a lot of responsibility on the offense. It gives you an idea how special a talent that Bird is.

Bird is on the floor every game he’s a starter for every game and he’s basically stepped into Cal player Alan Crabbe’s shoes. Bird is not a Crabbe quality outside shooter and anybody in basketball hardly is. Bird has great competitiveness and the rest of his game he’s actually got a more complete game than Crabbe does.

Bird is not necessarily more skilled but he’s played as hard 100 percent of the time, Crabbe was proned to gaging a few plays if his shot wasn’t falling for him. So on those merits Bird is giving Cal everything they could be that they hope to get out of a freshman. Montgomery is getting as much experience out of him that he can before the conference games start because there’s nothing but good teams in that conference.

Kings Arena: Bid rules to be loosened for arena contractors, non union firms to get a shot

by Ken Gimblin

SACRAMENTO–Non Union contractors who protested that union only contractors get to develop the Sacramento Kings new basketball arena downtown when the contractors were originally announced will have a shot during a possilbe new bid process. ICON Venue Group was given the contract to manage the project, Turner Construction group was selected to do the pre construction work, and AECOM was chosen to do the architect work design on the arena, during the bid process AECOM and Turner were selected by the city.

According to Sacramento officials the bid process would be suspended loosening up the competetive bid procedures and it will now allow small businesses to get involved in the arena build. The Kings will be in charge of decdiding who wins in the bid process. Non-union contractors had taken up sides with anti downtown arena groups in their attempt to put a subsidy proposal on the Sacramento June 2014 ballot that would allow voters to answer the question if public subsidies should be allowed to build new entertainment or sports facilities in Sacramento.

The non union groups joined the campaign after it was learned that only union groups would be used as contract developers for the new arena. The non union groups said that the bid process was not fair and equal and that non union contractors should have an opportunity to work on the new arena as well. After it was learned they would not be included in the construction process a non union group leader took the microphone at a Kings ceromony at Westfield Mall and told the group and Kings organizers standing there that the non-union group would protest the new arena.

The Sacramento city council will be asked to vote on the bid proposal rules to allow the smaller groups and non union groups to have a shot at working on the arena. If the non-union groups are allowed to work on the new arena they will most likely drop out of the anti arena campaign to put the subsisdy question on the ballot.

However it was reported the damage might have been done and that the subsidy question could be placed on the June ballot as it’s been disclosed that STOP Sacramento Taxpayers Opposed to Pork and Voters for a Fair Arena Deal two groups who are trying to gather signatures on the petition to get the measure in the ballot are closing in on the 22,000 signatures required by mid December.

The NBA has stated that they expect the arena to be up and running by October 2016 in time for the pre season if not the NBA has the option to move the club.

It was a very interesting Saturday litterally of games and any one of them were not disappointing we’ll start with the Oklahoma-Oklahoma State game I was truly surprised that OU went into Still Water and came home with a victory. Number 17 Oklahoma and Oklahoma State is their archrival over in Still Water Oklahoma.

Number six Oklahoma State they did it for bedlum and they came back with a victory and I’m just surprised that just really surprised me to me it was those turnovers and once again it’s always about those turnovers and penalties whereas Oklahoma State had seven penalties they had two turnovers and it was still pretty much even.

Oklahoma had the ball a little bit more and this came down to who wanted it more and I kind of think that Oklahoma State really took it as “oh we got this” and really didn’t think about “hey Oklahoma has less to lose in this” this was a big win for Oklahoma. OU as soon as you count one of those teams out they got and the win and when you expect everything from them they don’t show up.

It’s one of those weird things about OU and this team but this was a real shocker to go into Still Waters and do this what can you say it’s like Oklahoma State quarterback Clint Chelf he was 19-35 for 200 yards plus one touchdown and one interception Oklahoma quarterback Blake Bell was 10-16 for 140 yards, one touchdown with one interceptions.

The rushing game was pretty much non-existant there wasn’t a lot of rushing this was truly a non spectacular game that came out with a very surprising outcome. Baylor totally ran over the University of Texas what can you say it is what it is in a 30-10 win. We go back to Bowling Green State University Friday night who is the max conference champion beating Northern Illinois University 47-27.

The loss didn’t allow Northern Illinois to get into a BCS Bowl they were undefeated up until then I don’t see them in a BCS game possibly a non-BCS game will get them into Fresno State who had a very convincing win against Utah State 24-17. I don’t see any other non-BCS team making it to the BCS Bowl game.

Stanford definitley let them know they are here and their a force to be reckon with winning the Pac 12 over Arizona State 38-14. Stanford has been looking for some respect all year long people thought that after they lost to Utah then of course they lost to Oregon people really didn’t give them the respect that they truly deserved.

The Cardinal are truly the better team in the Pac 12, everybody was talking about UCLA, Oregon and Stanford turned out to be the team to watch. Auburn”s win over Missuori 59-42 I had Missouri winning this one and it almost happened. It was a barnburner and it went back and forth all four quarters and Auburn came back the victor being the champion of the South Eastern Conference.

Relevant in Seattle: Why Mariners inked Cano’ for $240 million

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary

Of course the Seattle Mariners want to win, but last few seasons this team has been living in the cellar. The best news for the Mariners was the arrival of the 2013 season, when the Houston Astros joined the American League West. Now, the Astros have ownership of last place, and might own it for a while.

The main reason that Jack Zduriencik, General Manager of the Seattle Mariners signed ex-Yankee second baseman Robinson Canó for 10 years and $240 million, is to be relevant in Seattle(and also trying to keep his job)a few days ago, Seattle Mariners long time President Chuck Armstrong resigned after almost two decades, with no titles.

Their attendance is dwindling, the interest for the team is at an all-time low(specially with the resurgence of the Seattle Seahawks, who have become “the team in Seattle”.

The Mariners franchise founded in 1977 has never won a pennant or a World Series. This is the franchise that had such players in the past as: Randy Johnson, Ken Griffey Jr, Edgar Martínez, Omar Vizquel, Alex Rodríguez and Ichiro Suzuki. among other excellent Hall of Fame type players.

Last few seasons the Mariners have waited for their young coveted talent to develop, but it has not happened, they still have a very good starting rotation, with ace Féliz Hernández, one of the best hurlers in the game. In 2013 the Mariners offense was totally absent, and they needed to “wake up”the fan interest in the Emerald City.

So, as far as shock value, the Canó signing is as good as it comes. We know it is a players market and every team need to have established star talent to draw well. The Mariners are one of those regional teams, they draw not only from Washington, but from nearby Idaho,Oregon and parts of Canada. Because of the geographical situation of Seattle, the Mariners do lead the league every season in one department; they travel more miles than any other team.

Seattle is a very nice city, and they can still revive that fan base. This is one step towards doing that. Yes, they probably overpaid for Canó, if he plays the rest of his career in Seattle he will be 41 on the last year of his contract and problably, with that swing, still a good hitter in the league, as their designated hitter by the 2025 season.

Safeco Field, still one of the very best facilities for baseball in the world, they continue to have very wealthy ownership, with the Nintendo Company of Japan at the helm, so there is hope for the Mariners after all.

The American League West have been won the last two season by one of the teams with the smallest payrolls in baseball, the Oakland Athletics. 2013 Executive of the Year, A’s General Manager Billy Beane continues to make the most with the owners budget.

Nobody has to be more creative as a General Manager than Beane. The American League West will continue to be one of the strongest divisions in baseball this next 2014, and the Mariners want to be part of that group of teams that will content for the title.

Now, what the Seattle Mariners need, is to acquire a couple of bats with power, and insert them on that lineup around Robinson Canó, then they could finally be relevant for the first time in a while.

Raiders report: Raiders face struggling Jets with interchangable quarterbacks

by David Zizmor

ALAMEDA–The Oakland Raiders are hitting up the New York Jets at the New Jersey Meadowlands at the opportune moment because the Jets were playing pretty well for the early part of the season they were kind of a surprise team. They won five games and everyone was saying “wow they’re not as bad as we thought, we thought the Jets would be one of the three or four worst teams in the league.”

They’re actually saying a lot of the things that the people were saying about the Raiders that they were surprised that they were winning games. The Jets have in the last several games kind of sunk back to that their in the five worst teams in the league mode. Jets quarterback Geno Smith he’s at least shown flashes of being a competent quarterback in the last four games.

Smith has really kind of regressed they haven’t had any of the offense it’s been all down to the point where last week he was benched for backup quarterback Matt Simms and Simms has never started for any NFL team. Smith might be back this Sunday against the Raiders in the starting line ups.

Smith certainly has the talent he could do some damage and the way the Jets are playing right now there’s no reason to think he’s going to come out and torch the Raiders. Smith is just not playing that well and the Raiders defense is solid enough that they should be able to pressure him and slow him down. To be honest the Jets have one the least impressive set of skill players in the NFL.

That’s not including the quarterback position you just look at the running backs, the wide receivers, the tight ends, the Jets really have nobody of note. Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes is back he’s someone you can’t sleep on but nobody else. They don’t have any depth at wide receiver, their tight ends are no names, their running backs are in and out of the line ups with injuries.

The guys who are in there aren’t particularly good and while the Raiders defense isn’t fantastic they have proven they can stop lousy teams which you saw in Houston a couple of weeks ago and the Jets are on par with that Houston team if not worse. If the Raiders can go in on this one and expect to be in the game it’s never easy to win on the road in the NFL so I don’t expect this to come easy.

The Jets have show they can play good defense and Jets head coach Rex Ryan last week Ryan is particularly good at troubling young rookie quarterbacks we’ve seen it time and time again where rookies and inexperienced QBs go in against the Rex Ryan defense and he completely baffles them with different looks and presenting his players in odd ways that confuse the young quarterbacks.

49ers report: In the grand scheme of things Niners glad not to be playing in Seattle Sunday

by Ken Gimblin

SANTA CLARA–The 49ers had a lot of trouble whenever they had to play the Seahawks in Century Link and they lost their last two contests when they had to play there including the second game of this season where they just got demolished. It was a little closer than it appeared because the Niners were only trailing 12-3 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Niners weren’t really in that game running back Vernon Davis got injured, Ian Williams got knocked out and the team just could not move the ball at all on offense. A large part of that was obviously the Seahawks fantastic defense and it was the insane crowd in Seattle that is just so loud that the offensive players can’t hear anything.

The Niners couldn’t hear the snap count, they couldn’t hear their teammates, it made it really hard to get off the ball in a timely manner. It gave a huge advantage to the Seahawks who take advantage of that communication along the lines and getting an extra push out of it. There’s a reason that the Seahawks haven’t lost at home in a couple of seasons is because of that crowd gives them a huge homefield advantage.

The Seahawks are not the same team on the road as they get ready to come to Candlestick this Sunday against the 49ers that advantage they have at home completely vanishes and they become a slightly more beatable team. This year they only lost once and that was to the Colts in Indianopoilis. The Colts are one of the few teams to have beat the Niners and the Seahawks.

Just because the Hawks lost the one game on the road doesn’t mean their not going to lose any games on the road they still have the best record in the NFL and the 49ers certainly will have their hands full when they play them this weekend. The home field is the biggest thing and the Niners and the Seahawks match up very well we’ve seen the last couple times they played at Candlestick which is a good home field for the 49ers but it doesn’t offer any distinct advantage.

It’s not a dome stadium, it’s not artificial turfed that makes it a little faster for the Niners, there’s no advantagous noise factor going in there. When the Niners play anybody there yeah they have the homefield advantage but it’s not the same as a stadium like Seattle. I wouldn’t call Candlestick a neutral ground but it’s a much more balanced location for anybody to play.

For the Niners and the Seahawks, yes the 49ers won the last few games at the Stick against Seattle all of those games have been close  tough defensive battles, their not high scoring affairs it’s where you see how evenly matched these teams really are and that’s what the Niners have to look forward to.

Kings new arena: Local businessman donates 25K to keep subsidy question on ballot

 by Ken Gimblin

SACRAMENTO–Local business tycoon Chris Rufer has put up $25,000 in donated money to the campaign to stop the Sacramento Kings downtown arena which would place a subsidy question on the June 2014 Sacramento ballot. While the City, local government, and many supporters of the Kings proposed new downtown arena at Westfield Mall is under plans the opposition could turn out to be a wild card as they’re fund raising is starting to take on a life of it’s on.

Rufer whose business is in Sacramento is taking the opposing view. In addition to Rufer’s donation there are two groups working to oppose the arena build in downtown and they both have raised tens of thousands of dollars in their campaign to oppose it.

The groups are fighting to keep an intiative on the ballot that questions if public sudsidies should finance any new proposed sports or entertainment facilities in Sacramento. So far the group STOP Sacramento Taxpayers opposed to Pork and Voters for a Fair Arena Deal have stepped up raising nearly $40,000.

A group who is in favor of the subsidy has delivered collecting cash and checks in the amount of $26,000 and this group is fighting to keep the question of public subsidies being used off the ballot. The price tag for a new Sacramento downtown arena subsidy is $258 million.

The Voters for a Fair Arena Deal have raised $8,500 and STOP has raised $31,473 both groups who are pushing for the opposition to the new arena and putting the question about public funds being spent towards any new such subsidies need 22,000 signatures on the petition to get the queston on the ballot. The 22,000 signatures needed are due by mid December.

The campaign’s credibilty was in question over  the summer when Chris Hansen who wanted to buy the Kings and move them to Seattle funded the signature gathering effort to get the question on the ballot spending $100,000 and having a Los Angeles law firm manage the campaign. STOP said they had no idea that Hansen funded the campaign and Hansen later ended up having to pay a $50,000 fine for violating California campaign disclosure laws.

Rufer is the founder of a company group called Morning Star which is a tamato producer which profits $350 million annually. Rufer’s company now controls 40 percent of the tamato processing in America. Rufer had issues in his company when a former Morning Star executive Fredrick Scott Salyer was sentenced to six years in prison for rackateering and price fixing charges. Rufer said in court papers that alledgedly Salyer cheated the company by bribing executives from competing companies at Kraft foods and Frito Lay, Salyer also alledgedly bribed Rufer’s personal assistant to steal confidential company data.

Michael Duca on Cal basketball

by Michael Duca

BERKELEY–There were a couple of performances from last Monday night’s game at Haas Pavilion against the UC Irvine Anteaters that Cal put on that really didn’t even jump out at you from the stat sheet. That were critically important Tyrone Wallace had a career high 11 rebounds from the lane position last night and he had Justin Cobbs as Cal’s point guard. When they lost in the consolation round to Dayton in Maui David Kravish was just about worn out by them and Richard Solomon was missing his second straight game with a cornea operation.

The Bears had no real post presence they couldn’t go inside outside so all they could do is shoot outside the zone and Cobb put up 31 points and they lost by two or three handful of points about 18. Cal’s Sam Singer had three points but he had three rebounds and Cal assisted on all three quarters of their baskets and things just looked a whole lot better than they did in the game versus Dayton in Maui.

The offense looked pretty good and the defense looked even better in the first half, Irvine missed ten straight and then they hit two out of three and missed eight more and rode in the half so the end of the half shooting hitting two of their last 21 shots and your probably not going to win a lot of basketball games doing that. Solomon is now sporting goggles from getting his eye scratched in the Dayton game and has decided to wear goggles for the rest of the year.

Solomon was not instructed to by doctors he didn’t need to it’s his own choice he doesn’t want to go through that again he doesn’t want to get someone’s finger in his eye. That was a pretty nasty abrasion, Solomon’s eye was swollen shut for two days he could not see and he could not open it. Getting back out on the floor he was rusty and you could tell a week without game action and his timing was not fully there but he set the tone literally from the get go.

Solomon lacked ten inches on Irvine’s center from Senagal, Mamadou Ndiaye who is 7’7 and one of the three or four tallest players ever to play college basketball and Solomon won the opening tip and he did it with climbing athleticism and that is basically how he got Ndiaye to get into foul trouble early in the first half and he picked up his second foul just about 3:50 into the game and sat the rest of the first half. Ndiaye got five and half minutes play in the second half.

Solomon challenged Ndiaye going straight at him early in the game and scored the first five points of the game for Cal and in the second half David Kravish hit Cal’s first ten points and had 12 of the first 16 and he hit six shots in a row and five of them were Ndiaye who was in the game in the second half. So instead of lurking in the backs of too many peoples minds and he is huge and he does have a wing span.

Most big men can get up close to Ndiaye and use their athletic ability and quickness to create some space while he’s trying to back away and make shots and they did. They hit a lot of mid range jumpers.

Johnson could be best closer yet for A’s: Giants looking to sign five tendered contracts

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary

OAKLAND–In the last two years former Baltimore Oriole closer Jim Johnson who saved 50 games last year and 51 in 2012, joined the Oakland A’s on Monday as the new closer of the club, former A’s pitchers Grant Balfour and Bartolo Colon will not return to Oakland and will seek new teams. Johnson will be the key closer and this was a great pick up by A’s general manager Billy Beane.

The A’s also signed Scott Kazmir on Monday for $22 million for two years, Kazmir is a lefty whose your typical five inning pitcher. He had some arm problems in the past I remember when he was a rookie with the Angels in 2007 in Anaheim and he was pretty good and he’s been around he pitched in Tampa Bay. Kazmir is a rotation guy and you put him in the rotation but I like the Johnson acquisition better and he could help the A’s a lot coming in in the ninth inning.

Johnson did have some arm problems but who hasn’t in the big leagues in this day and era a lot of guys come out a lot better after Tommy John surgery so Johnson is a good acquisition for Oakland. For Colon his agent is asking for a two year deal from Oakland and Beane is offering one so there is a good chance that Colon might sign with the Angels and he would love to be back in Southern California.

Colon won the Cy Young Award in Anaheim and that was in 2005 with the Angels that year he used to throw 98 MPH he threw like a Justin Verlander and last year wasn’t his best year for the A’s but it was that 2005 year for the Angels when he went 21-8 with a 3.48 ERA and the Angels would love to have him back and he’s asking for two years and after those two years he might retire. He’ll hang it up he’s 41 Colon is not coming back with the A’s and will shop other clubs and the A’s will not be able to sign him.

Balfour is a free agent and when Johnson was signed Balfour who was the A’s representative All-Star player with Colon last year will be looking for another team as Johnson will be the A’s closer starting next season and Balfour will be somewhere else. The meetings with the baseball owners begin next Monday in Orlando Florida and things are already happening there’s a lot of trading going on this week.

Giants looking to sign five players: The San Francisco Giants are looking to sign five players who are arbitration eligible, first baseman Brandon Belt, outfielder Gregor Blanco, pitcher Yusmeiro Petit, infielders Joaquin Arias, and Tony Abreu. Arias is versatile he can play third, short, and he can play any place. Petit is a Venezuelan pitcher who had a great year and almost pitched a perfect game, he has a good arm. The Giants are not sure if they are going to keep him and of course Barry Zito is gone after pitching for the Giants for seven years.

Blanco he’s your basic fourth outfielder he’s not an everyday outfielder. I’m surprised that the Giants have not signed somebody else to play leftfield and maybe they want to stay away from Nelson Cruz whose still a free agent but as we know last year he was suspended for PEDs and former Reds outfielder Shin-Soo Choo is a very good outfielder but his price might be too high for the Giants.

The Giants might have fortified themselves as far as pitching is concerned with Timmy Hudson and signing Timmy Lincecum. The Giants got Javier Lopez a left hander specialist. The Giants still need another bat because the truth about this the Giants and the Giants might not want to talk about this you don’t know what kind of Pablo Sandoval your going to get. There is only one superstar. everyday player and that is Buster Posey. Posey is the only guy who you can trust to hit .300 every year. You don’t know what kind of Pablo your going to get and signing Arias could be a plus he could help Pablo out at third base.

Michelle Richardson on the NCAA

 by Michelle Richardson
Auburn 34 Alabama 28: This was one of the most exciting games and exciting might not be even the right word to use that’s how great it was and at the very end of the game when Chris Davis returned the ball from a botched field goal for over 100 yards that’s how you want to win the game. Auburn did this against their arch rival and you can’t ask for anything more. The game was great it was pretty evenly matched the time of possession was about the same. Alabama has about 1:34 left and couldn’t hold the ball and Alabama had more penalties they had six penalties for 45 yards.
Auburn had only three penalties for 21 yards, Auburn had a fumble and they had a turnover and Alabama had no turnovers and there were no interceptions so the game was played well. It was just one of those things. How do you explain it, you just can’t explain it was one of those things that makes football in November so exciting and I tell people over and over it’s great when football season starts but November it is the time of the year that’s when you know who the real deal and whose not.
Remember what it doesn’t matter what happens in September or October in football but it’s November it’s all about what happens in November because that’s when the games really matter. People play these games and know they have to win them because these are the ones that have to be won in order to advance to the next level for bowl games. Auburn let it be known they won it. I can’t tell you Alabama wasn’t in it maybe they thought they should be looking forward to the SCC Championship instead of concentrating on the game that was in front of them.
Pac 12 Championship: Stanford is made up of a group of very poised young men and they can play anywhere as they play this Championship in Arizona State this coming Saturday night. They have more issues amongst their peers than on the field. Arizona State is not going to let you just walk in and take over by no means and their not going let you do this last dynasty stuff. Stanford is going to go in there and play but it’s believed that Stanford can and should go down there and pull off a win.
It will be a good game and who would have thought this would be the year that it would be Stanford and Arizona State to represent the Pac 12 as everybody had Oregon picked to win and these teams proved otherwise. Oregon was just a little bit over hyped and that’s why they play the games. That’s why the games are played. Somebody isn’t just going to show up and get handed the title. Stanford had a tough loss against USC in their last loss but it ended the season with a 10-2 record.
Stanford is in the Pac 12 Championship and have earned a spot in the BCS bowl and Arizona State who quietly dominated for the most part the Pac 12 south. It’s going to be a great game and it’s evenly matched but I have still have Stanford coming out on top. I wouldn’t be surprised however if ASU shows us a little something something on Saturday night.
Villanova 88 Iowa 83 Big Ten/ACC hoops: Honestly this was a great game with Villanova winning it on Saturday and I take nothing away from either team but I’ll be honest with you it’s too early. This tournament was a great tournament and these were great games but don’t talk to me until you get to conference play. It’s December and January you’ll be in the conference play and you’ll be getting beat up and we might not see these teams again and then again you might not.
It’s like the last week in August or the second week in September when their still beating up on Liberty or Appalachian State. Lets all kind of calm down we’ve seen some really good basketball so far, there’s some very exciting players out there for Iowa and this was really a good game. Villanova was all over the floor with players like Jayvaughn Pinkston with 14 points and James Bell at guard he had 20 points and then they had Chris Jenkins, Josh Hart had 14, also they had key help from Ryan Arcidiacono.
This game came down to bench play and Villanova had three people on the bench that was in double figures and that’s a good showing that was very large. This was a great game and I can’t wait to see more games like this and it’s just the beginning and we have to wait until they get into conference play.
