Morris Phillips and Michael Duca on the NCAA: Bears bring two game win streak against LA schools this week

by Morris Phillips and Michael Duca

BERKELEY–When Cal had to play Washington State at Pullman last Wednesday for a four point 80-76 win over the Cougars it was not an easy win. They had to fly and drive through some tough weather to get to Washington State and take the long bus ride from the Spokane airport to get there. Richard Solomon in that game had 12 points and nine rebouds to help lead the Golden Bears to the win.

Cal has such a balanced team that it’s hard to point to any one guy, but if you did its the Bears Justin Cobbs he’s a senior he’s moving up the all time scoring list at Cal. Solomon has been a barometer when they beat number one Arizona at Cal when they pulled off the big upset. Cobbs was 6-6 and four nights after that against Stanford he goes 0-6 and they lose. So here’s somebody that is a barometer of winning and losing.

The game against Washington State Cobbs had a fine game, the Bears hurt the Cougars in Pullman with the inside production Cobbs and David Kravish had big games. The Bears went onto Seattle and deomoed the Washington Huskies 72-59 and the Bears who were not playing consistent basketball when they lost games to teams like Arizona State and Stanford and turned it around and won both games in Washington is consistent basketball.

The wins comes on the heels of the four loses in five games and luckily the team has done enough so their in the picture. The Bears are in the hunt for a post season bid, an NCAA bid, if they continue to play well they’ve got six games left and they’ve been anything but consistent but if they can win down the stretch four out of six they should have an NCAA bid waiting for them.

From the coaching aspect Cal head coach Mike Montgomery has got his team to respond and if anything a kid would criticize that he’s serious all the time but that’s his job. Montgomery is a guy whose suppose to provide leadership and the team spirit at half time when he speaks to the players at half time. He expects the guys to come out and respond.

They follow the scouting reports which are always detailed and most of the time it works out and in this particular case the trip to Washington was sparked by the end of half runs. 19-2 against Washington on Saturday and then 14-2 against Washington State on Wednesday.

Right before half time the Bears were able to make up some deficits and take some leads to the half so if it’s before half time or after half time coach Montgomery gets his players to respond. Right now the Bears have to keep winning and if they want a post season bid they’ve got to keep winning. Cal has enough marquee wins so UCLA steps right out and facing them this Wednesday at Haas and should give Cal a chance to get a marquee win.

Warriors commentary: W’s might look for bench strength before the trade deadline

by David Zizmor

OAKLAND–The Warriors need to begin the second half of this NBA season with a good start and work on the consistency on this team. That wasn’t the case or the issue against Miami last Wednesday night at Oracle it was a nail biter right down to the buzzer beater by LeBron to win it for Miami.

The Warriors have to make sure that they stay in these games a little bit more and keep it close. They were down by 19 at one point to Miami and they still managed to come back and make it a game against the NBA champs.

The Warriors ended up losing it by one 111-110 on crazy three pointer by LeBron James at the buzzer. The Warriors don’t want to get down by 19 ever to anybody whether it’s the Heat or anybody else, whether it’s the best team in the league or the worse team in the league you want to keep it close at all times that’s what the Warriors have to work on or maybe they should take a 19 point lead themselves.

You have to give the Warriors a little bit of credit they were playing without any of their starting centers. Andrew Bogut, Jermain O’Neal, and they were a little thin up front and once these guys get healthy and when center Festus Ezeli comes back from his injury they’ll have a lot more defensive presence up front.

The Warriors are looking to have more depth up front to help them down the stretch, that will be a big factor as the Warriors go forward. In the second half the Warriors will look at the trade deadline coming up so they might be looking for a little bit of bench help. Their starting five is as good as anybody in the league but their bench is really bad.

During the course of the season the bench has gotten a little bit better with the addition of Jordan Crawford but their still struggling. You like to see Harrison Barnes doing a bit more off the bench, Draymond Green has been very good, he’s improved a lot this season and he was already pretty good.

Barnes is the guy you’d like to see and the Warriors expect to see a lot of him in the second half. Barnes has been all over the place, there have been a few games where he has come off the bench and has been a real spark plug for the most part. Barnes hasn’t really found his place in that offensive set coming off the bench.

Warriors arena at piers 30-32: Condos and hotel were the Warriors meal ticket to pay for new arena now on hold

by Ken Gimblin

SAN FRANCISCO–The Golden State Warriors had big dreams in getting a new arena completed with the biggest Bay window that showed the Mayor Willie L Brown Bay Bridge in the background with the bay view and a look even at the lights in the background of the Warriors former East Bay home Oakland. The Warriors had planned to have a 17 story luxury condo and a ten story hotel tower built across from piers 30-32 that would finance their new arena.

The arena itself on the original drawing board was set to be a buidling that would be 12 stories high, but after ballots that were signed by some 400 potential San Francisco voters who gave the thumbs down on the height of the building the Warriors withdrew from the plan and now are forced to come up with a smaller, scaled down version of a new arena design.

The Warriors who originally were going to open the arena in 2017 have pushed back their plans to open the new arena in 2018. The Warriors came to the realization of these anti height ballots in early February and Warriors spokesman Nathan Ballard said that the team would go back and review the height limits that residents opposed that would block waterfront views.

The costs alone to repair the eroding piers for a arena foundation on the water would run $180 million double the orignal estimate, this price tag alone has the Warriors regrouping their plans. The Warriors intentions were to get income from the hotel and condos that they would own from across the arena which would help pay for the costs of the arena or any loans for the arena build.

The other arugument by city residents and voters who partcipated in the ballots against the heights of the arena was how could the average working family or indvidual for that matter afford to buy a ticket in the new arena. The lowest priced ticket at the Warriors new arena at piers 30-32 would run $200-$300 per game. Residents claim that the arena would a playground for the rich at lavish prices and most fans who go to the Warriors today would be outpriced to even buy a game ticket.

Residents including former San Francisco Mayor Art Agnos said that the height limit is the forefront problem of the pier 30-32 project for the Warriors. The Warriors plan called for a 125 foot high arena where it would pass the waterfront height limit of 40 feet. In last November’s election voters rejected high rise condo and hotel construction near the peirs called the 8 Washington condos or propositions B and C, the project was rejected by a wide margin.

The Warriors after some 400 ballots mostly rejecting the arena size were sent to San Francisco City Hall in early February realized that their project was in for another set back and with Warriors owners Joe Lacob and Peter Gruber in discussions the Warriors are trying to figure out how they will go forward with the next step on how they will get a new arena built at the piers.

The location for a new arena at the piers may not be happen for the Warriors, the San Francisco Giants at one time had entertained the idea for the Warriors to build a new arena near AT&T Park. It might be another idea for a new arena location if the Warriors were interested in sharing the location with the Giants.

The Giants have also proposed buidling retail, hotels and condos at the AT&T parking lot locations near the park. However the residents on the waterfront and Embarcadero may oppose any over sized towers in that location as well. San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee said at one time that the new Warriors arena would be a “legacy” to his administration but after last November’s election rejection to waterfront developments and the 49ers leaving San Francisco Lee can not afford to aggravate voters by pushing for the new arena project without hurting himself politically.

Larry Leavitt on Pro Hockey: USA-Russian match could go down as best hockey match in the Olympics

by Larry Leavitt

SAN JOSE–When you look at Friday’s win by the men’s U.S. Hockey team in a 3-2 shootout over Russia and compare it to the 1980 win by the U.S. over the Soviets there was a lot more hype for the 1980 team because clearly they were an underdog, this year they weren’t an underdog, these were two really good teams. Watching the game these two teams challenged each other and the first team to make a lot of mistakes would have problems.

They both as it turned out played very evenly, Russia seemed to have a lot more zone time, the bigger ice was an advantage it really allowed the players to showcase their skating skills and the puck handling skills. It was a very exciting game and very fun for the fans to watch. What was disappointing is the shootout had to pick the winner. You wanted to see them work for the win by skating not in a shootout.

The penalites did make a big difference in the game, the USA penalty kill truly laid it out on the line blocking shots right and left, hoepfully that won’t impact the games going on in the future, you don’t want to see anybody get hurt in the Olympics. It shows that their in it all the way, the two teams played were so evenly matched that you wanted it to keep going on.

The interesting thing about the shootout after the first three skaters shot is that they used the same skaters over and over again. This is Olympic hockey and not NHL season play and wow it was intresting hockey. It worked out for the USA and it might not be a good thing for Olympic competiton. It only shows the Russian goalie had only few moves to try and block the shots for a shootout.

Before the shootout started the commentary by the television analysts was that T.J.Oshie was used heavily in overtime shootouts because of his shootout skills. He has a very good record of going in the shootout and he was amazing in the shootout, he did a great job, he did miss a few, it shows the talent of the individual player that his skill level to find the back of the net on a five hole shot and a crossbar goal was a perfect display for the Sochi Olympics.

This shows the invidual talent of this team sport, it’s a little disheartening to me that the game went to a shootout when it’s a team sport. However that’s the way the rules in the Olympics are now. It was fun to watch that match and it could have been a different game if Oshie hesitated a second longer but he had the goaltender beaten. It was a very exciting game and the USA team is proud to have it end the way it did with a one goal shootout win.

When it come to the Russians Pavel Datsyuk there can’t be anybody who can argue that he’s not the best hockey player all around in the world. He show cased his talents and they say he has some injuries and if that’s Datsyuk playing at that level with those injuries the Russian team is proud to have someone who can withstand the pain and play Olympic hockey at that high level.

Reality check for Cuban baseball after elimination in Venezuela

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

The government controlled system in Cuba has taken it’s toll on baseball in that, the largest island in the Caribbean. Cuba was the first Latin American country to have a player in the United States organized leagues.

Esteban Bellán was the first Cuban and the first Latin American to play major league baseball. Bellán, who after playing in the United States, became one of Cuba’s first great baseball player-managers, learned how to play the game while he was a student at Fordham University from 1863-1868.

During his time at Fordham, Bellán played for the newly created Fordham Rose Hill Baseball Club. Founded in the late 1850’s, the Fordham Rose Hill’s played the first ever nine-man team college baseball game in the United States against St. Francis Xavier College on November 3, 1859.

In 1869 Bellán joined the Troy Haymakers for whom he played third base until 1872. In 1871 the Haymakers joined the National Association, which became the National League in 1876. The Haymakers later became the New York Giants, now the San Francisco Giants.

Cuba has been a pioneer in baseball in Latin America, since the 1800’s. In Cuba even under bad government dictatorships, baseball always thrived, When the Castro-Communist revolution took over Cuba, and announced in 1961 that they were banning all professional sports in the island, baseball was among those, and now over a half century later, it is obvious that Cuba is suffering.

After the Cuban team was eliminated recently in the Caribbean World Series, in Margarita Island, Venezuela, (tournament was won by México, for the second year in a row), a lot of baseball experts have noticed that Cuban baseball is not at par with the other countries in the region.

A lot has to do with poor equipment, practice and regular baseball diamonds. In today’s regular Cuban league, when a foul ball goes into the stands, the fans have to throw the ball back. That by itself, should give you an idea of the situation. This is even during their national championship games.

Many players have defected and continue to do so, here in the Bay Area talented Athletics slugger Yoenis Céspedes was one of them. Maybe the most talented player, pound-for-pound on the A’s, he was lucky, he got to finally bring his family to the United States.

It is not easy for a Cuban player who defects, especially if he does it by himself, and leaves his family behind in Cuba, the government will make his family life “very uncomfortable”, in a country where their own citizens do not have the freedom to travel in and out of the island, unless they have special authorization from the government.

Musicians, athletes and public figures usually get that authorization. In the case of Cuban baseball players, they usually travel all-together as a team, with coaches and government representatives, that make sure they are all accounted for at the hotel where they stay, before and after a game, still many find a way to leave their teams when they are outside of Cuba and ask for political exile.

Others, just take the huge risk of escaping Cuba in homemade rafts and head north, searching for freedom. But it is not only athletes. Amnesty International, still list Cuba as one of the world biggest human rights violators.

On March 17, 2013,seven members of the Cuban National Ballet defected to the U.S. and Mexico while on tour with their dance company.

The dancers traveled to Mexico on March 17 during the beginning of the company’s international tour. It was there that they apparently decided to flee, and six out of the seven members went on to cross the U.S.-Mexico border near Texas, and since then they were granted for political asylum. Such is life in the island once called “The Pearl of the Antilles”.

Like Walter Cronkite used to say: “and that’s the way it is”.

Golden State Warriors commentary: Offense and passing need an upgrade going up against Miami

by David Zizmor

OAKLAND–After the Warriors beat the Philadelphia 76ers they can take in very little as they play the Miami Heat on Wednesday night at the Coliseum Arena. While beating the 76ers by 44 is great, it gives the starters a chance not to have to exert themselves especially going into a big game against Miami, but you don’t learn too much by beating Philadelphia by 44 because the Sixers are a very bad team.

They lost to the Warriors and the night before they lost by 46 to the LA Clippers by a almost identical score, really what it tells you is not that the Warriors are good but that the Sixers are bad. The best it does is paper over some of the problems the Warriors have had lately. The looked great against Philadelphia but if they want to succeed going away they really need to work on several things.

Not least of which is figuring out which ways to score that don’t involve isolation plays every other possession. That’s the biggest problem that head coach Mark Jackson is having right now and it’s just a lack of creativity on the offensive end of the floor. Obviously defense and consistency on defense is an issue with the Warriors. Their not as strong a defensive team as you would like but their improving over the previous years with Andre Iguodala getting healthy.

Clay Thompson has improved on the defensive end and Iguodala and Thompson are making a big difference. On offense this team runs hot and cold when their shots don’t fall they get in a lot of trouble a good way to counter act that is try to score inside. The Warriors don’t do that, they don’t cut to the lane, they don’t drive, they don’t throw the ball inside enough.

What they the Warriors end up doing is they end up doing isolation plays and having guys shoot 18 footers for three pointers and when those shots aren’t falling they basically give up and they start falling behind by huge amounts and their not able to come back or they have to spend so much effort and energy coming back by the time they get to the end of the game they just can’t sustain it anymore.

The fact that their running isolation plays on a team where all five of the starters are excellent passers and Clay Thompson is the worst and he’s not a bad passer. Steph Curry he’s a great passer, Iguodala and Bogut are great passers. Bogut for a big guy is a great passer and David Lee is a great passer and to not have ball movement to have one guy take the ball and take the shot when he gets open is criminal, it’s really lousy offense. The Warriors cannot have a lousy offense when the face the Miami Heat on Wednesday night.

Michael Duca and Morris Phillips on Cal basketball: After Arizona win and Stanford loss Cal needs pick me up at Pullman

by Michael Duca and Morris Phillips

BERKELEY–If you watched the Arizona game with something other than your heart in your mouth and you stop and looked at the stopped and looked at the stats as the game was developing Cal was shooting over 50 percent for the first 32 minutes of the game. Arizona missed their first three shots and did not shoot above 25 percent at any point in the first half.

Part of that is defense is just a cold shooting night on the part of the Wild Cats through all of that. Arizona was shooting 21 percent in the first 14 minutes of the game and Cal was shooting over 50 percent they still had a six point lead at the time. They are not a dominant offensive team unless and until Cal’s Justin Cobbs decides he’s going he’s going to be a shooter from the moment he falls out of bed to start every game they don’t have the outside threat to run the outside game.

The question that I asked Cal head coach Mike Montgomery after the game against Arizona while everyone else was focusing on the last seven minutes of the game was about Cobbs scoring the last 12 points of the game and so on. What was really intresting was the fact that the six point lead barely eight minutes into the game against Arizona Montgomery had three true freshman on the floor.

He said part of that was just due to the match up that he thought that there are a few teams that the Wild Cats Shawn Rooks could have a very solid effect against and Arizona is one of them with their taller inside game. It’s also indicative of the fact that whether he likes it or not and we know he doesn’t particularly like it Montgomery has been forced to rely on more inexperienced freshman than he normally has.

One indicator is that Cal is an NCAA team for the tournament if they lose to USC at home they will not get into it no matter if they win the seven other games. Even if they beat Arizona a second time, if they have two loses to USC at home nobody is going to be able to stomach that. The Bears have to go 6-2 the rest of the way to insure a spot, 5-3 their going to be a bubble team

The thing you have to look for in games like this is the hangover effect after a game like Arizona you may not be coming out thirsting for blood early on. Monty said it was crystal clear in the Arizona game that he had kids in there at ten o’clock in the morning and you could tell that they were already hyped up for the game and you knew they were going to be absolutely ready when the whistle blew.

Larry Leavitt on pro hockey: Niemi leads the way for Sharks in Sochi Olympics

SAN JOSE–San Jose Sharks goaltender Annti Niemi is the quiet one that no one is talking about Niemi of the Finland team. They could be a dark horse to sneak in the back door. Everybody expects or least some of the hockey folks I’ve been talking to expects the U.S. to play Canada in the finals but they also got to look out for Russia.

Russia has a strong team and they have the home ice advantage, probably the most interesting thing so far in the Olympics is the women’s U.S. hockey team and it’s kind of hard to follow because they play in the middle of the night for us on the west coast. Apparently they had 9-0 a trouncing last Sunday night for a big win and they did really well with the U.S. who had three goals in 55 seconds.

The Sharks Patrick Marleau and Marc-Edouard Vlasic whose representing Canada and then you have Captain America Joe Pavelski who is not the captain of the U.S. team but who got the nickname because of his clutch play in the last two months. For Marleau he’s been to multiple Olympiads but for Vlasic this is his first time and listening to a radio interview he had earlier he was saying how he was looking forward to bringing the gold home period.

Intresting pieces of the puzzle some of the players now that are going to be Vlasic’s teammates in the NHL who he plays against but he put that all aside for a couple of weeks and is playing for the team for your country. I don’t know how that would work for me if I were on team USA knowing that Dustin Brown from the L.A. Kings took out the Sharks Tomas Hertl in a regular season game was my co-captain from my Olympic team.

I might be tempted during practice to give him a little extra rub on the boards, but this is about playing for your country. It’s a special time for everybody.

As far as the safety is concerned I know that Marleau left his kids at home to a nice twitter feed of and his kids who gave him a nice hug goodbye not wanting him to leave. The great mix of players who have been on the Olympic team and a few new faces will just add to the attraction from having a great team together it’s all about chemestry.

They all have their own ways of playing and it’s how they blend those ways together in the two weeks they have together they have about three practices before they get ready for the real deal, they have to put away the jet lag, time differences, some players were living on the west coast some players from the east coast have to fly half way around the world to Russia.

They have to get aquainted with their new hotel or bed surrounding because there’s been nothing but craziness as far as the accomendations are going down there in Sochi. It will be interesting to see how they battle all those little mynute little ingredients that will be taking a toll on their body and their mind before they actually start playing the game.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Kent’s coaching college ball gives former Giant different prospective on the game

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary

It’s commendable is the word that some Major Leaguers including former San Francisco Giant Jeff Kent’s whose caliber and whose name has been mentioned for the Hall of Fame there are guys in baseball who make money but Kent is doing it for the love of the game. He’s coaching college baseball and he’s getting a nominal fee nothing like the mnoney he made in the show.

Yes, you can not compare Kent’s coaching baseball in college to being in the big leagues and contracts such as they are today. I applaude Kent and he’s committed to the game of baseball. He loves the game he’s an on and off guy with the media when he was with the Giants and I was there covering the team for their Spanish radio broadcasts when he was there.

If former Giant Barry Bonds sat in one area of the clubhouse Kent would sit farthest away from Bonds, they didn’t get along we all knew that but they were great players. Bonds with the streroid controversey, Kent never had that problem by the way Kent was a very good player, he was an excellent player. Kent started out as a third baseman with the Mets. He wound up playing second base for the Giants and now today he coaches college baseball at Southwestern University.

Brandon Arroyo was signed to a $23 million deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks, we talked about the amount of money that these players make in Major League Baseball and God bless them I don’t envy them, their great athletes but here’s a typical example, Arroyo is going to be 37 in two weeks he pitches over 200 innings a year and he got such a large contract.

This reminds me when you go to a car dealer and you love that car and you say “thats a nice car” and then you check with the salesman who says “well Mr.Gonzalez this has over 25,000 miles on it already” but it’s a good car, it’s going to go over 100,000 miles” and I would say “how do you know that.”

However with Arroyo he has a very good track record, he’s never been hurt for a prolonged time, he throws 200 innings per year, it’s a risk and you take a risk. It’s a big investment, the Diamondbacks again are loaded with talent and their going to be there. ESPN has picked the Dodgers to finish first and the Diamondbacks maybe close to the Dodgers and the Giants will finish in third place.

So Arroyo is joining the Diamondbacks pitching staff and their getting loaded with talent and Arroyo was a good acquistion. The money surprises me but then now that’s the way it is. Arroyo signed a huge deal for two years with the D-Backs for $23.5 million.

Morris Phillips and Michael Duca on Cal Bears: Agu death has prefound effect on team, students, and faculty

by Morris Phillips and Michael Duca

BERKELEY–Ted Agu 21, Cal defensive lineman’s story personally is not a sad story, his life at Cal started as a walk on, he was well respected by his by teammates, he worked very hard to get where he was, he caught the eye of his coaches former head coach Jeff Tedford and current head coach Sonny Dykes. He was a major factor in the Cal football program, he was found to have the sickle cell trait which can manifest itself in numerous ways.

Mr.Agu never had any previous symptoms before this came out this week, what were finding out is that the sickle cell trait which obviously effects the African American athletes is really a major factor in some of the deaths that happens to NCAA athletes. It’s one of the major causes of scholarship athletes in the NCAA. It’s a sad story but hopefully people will find out about this desease but more important about Mr.Agu and what a positive spirit he was.

As for African Americans it’s always been known that the issue of sickle cell trait is out there for many and as years have gone by it’s kind of taken a back seat. Now according to statistics the sickle cell trait comes up frequently when tyring to account for the best of athletes. Everybody needs to open their eyes and find out a little bit more and we plan to find out a little bit more about this we hope we can do something in the future can be done that can prevent that.

The shock of this has devastated the entire Cal campus on Monday, no one saw this coming and Mr.Agu himself didn’t know he had the sickle cell trait, he was speaking when he was felled on Friday at the workout, they got him back to the facility and that’s when he fainted and these workouts are supervised by the medical staff. They were there and we still lost them and it’s unfortunate and it really is and we hope we can learn something from his death.

Now looking forward to the football program and the loss of Mr.Agu for next fall, the program will try to rebound from football players who had some of the worst test exams in the nation, the team suffering loses last season and the worst case now with the death of Mr.Agu. The recruiting class that was just signed Dykes would have hoped it would have been in the top three.

The Cal class is probably not in the top half of the Pac 12, there won’t be that immediate help coming and it would appear it will be later rather than sooner. You can’t judge what happened to Cal last year versus a whole lot of circumstances and probably outside of Dykes control but you have to say one thing their sure testing him on his resolve and his ability as a coach in this tough situation.

The Ted Agu situation doesn’t add to the negativity surrounding the program and Dykes can get things turned around and people will love him. This didn’t happen in the first year but we give coach Dykes a pass.
